Abstract:
Background: Sickle cell disorders are structural hemoglobinopathies, rendering red blood cells sickle shaped, less deformable and sticky leading to microvascular vaso-occlusion and premature red blood cells destruction which leads to varied clinical manifestations. It leads to lifelong morbidity thus affecting quality of life and contributes to early mortality thereby reducing the key national resources- the healthy workforce. This study was done to evaluate epidemiological and clinical profile of sickle cell disease attending the centre. Methods: This study was cross-sectional, observational study conducted at tertiary care hospital in Gujarat. After taking ethical clearance patients were enrolled as per inclusion and exclusion criteria and epidemiological and clinical profile of sickle cell disease patients was studied. Results: Mean age of sickle cell disease was 22.58 years. It was found in tribal communities of Gujarat like Rathwa, Baria, Tadvi etc. Commonest symptom was musculoskeletal pain (86.84%), followed by jaundice (71.05%), fever, dyspnoea, abdominal pain and chest pain. Most common systemic manifestation was pain crises (60.66%), followed by hemolytic anemia (31.15%), acute chest syndrome (30%), consolidation (11.67%), hepatopathy (10%) and avascular necrosis of hip. (6.56%).Conclusions: Sickle cell disease is seen in younger patients. In Gujarat mainly tribal communities are affected. Major systemic manifestations of sickle cell disease include pain crisis followed by hemolytic crisis, acute chest syndrome, hepatopathy and AVN of hip.

Mattsson, Cecilia, and Ida Hermanseter.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This study has presented in detail statistics and research related to the elderly and aging population and the many housing options that are currently available to this age demographic. The research has shown that Assisted Living Facilities are rapidly becoming the preferred method of Elder Care in the US, so much so that they have begun to offer nursing care which is typically offered only by nursing homes. Further exploration demonstrated that there is a lack of consistency in these facilities, and the evidence points to the need for a new model of Assisted Living that will focus more on the individual while still providing necessary care. This discovery has lead to the concept of creating an Assisted Living Development as the new model to be considered by future designers and Assisted Living planners. The creation of this model has helped to outline a new methodology for the planning and organization of Assisted Living.

Kebede, Endale Birhanu, Wolfgang Lutz, Cuaresma Jesus Crespo, and Alexia Fürnkranz-Prskawetz. "Education rather than age structure brings demographic dividend." The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1820362116.

Full text
Abstract:
The relationship between population changes and economic growth has been debated since Malthus. Initially focusing on population growth, the notion of demographic dividend has shifted the attention to changes in age structures with an assumed window of opportunity that opens when falling birth rates lead to a relatively higher proportion of the working-age population. This has become the dominant paradigm in the field of population and development, and an advocacy tool for highlighting the benefits of family planning and fertility decline. While this view acknowledges that the dividend can only be realized if associated with investments in human capital, its causal trigger is still seen in exogenous fertility decline. In contrast, unified growth theory has established human capital as a trigger of both demographic transition and economic growth. We assess the relative importance of changing age structure and increasing human capital for economic growth for a panel of 165 countries during the time period of 1980-2015. The results show a clear dominance of improving education over age structure and give evidence that the demographic dividend is driven by human capital. Declining youth dependency ratios even show negative impacts on income growth when combined with low education. Based on a multidimensional understanding of demography that considers education in addition to age, and with a view to the additional effects of education on health and general resilience, we conclude that the true demographic dividend is a human capital dividend. Global population policies should thus focus on strengthening the human resource base for sustainable development.
