Abstract:
The research presented in this dissertation used Magnetic Resonance (MR) techniques to study fluid dynamics in complex systems. The systems investigated were critical and supercritical fluids, partially saturated porous media, and oscillatory flow. Supercritical fluids (SCF) are useful solvents in green chemistry and oil recovery and are of great current interest in the context of carbon sequestration. Flow in partially saturated porous media and the resultant hydrodynamics are important in fields including but not limited to hydrology, chemical, medical, and the petroleum industry. Lastly, Pulsatile and oscillatory flows are prevalent in many biological, industrial, and natural systems. Displacement propagators were measured at various displacement observation times to quantify the time evolution of dynamics in critical and supercritical fluid flow. In capillary flow, the critical phase transition fluid C2F6 showed increased compressibility compared to the near critical gas and supercritical fluid. These flows exhibit large variations in buoyancy arising from large changes in density due to very small changes in temperature. Ensemble averaged MR measurements were taken to observe the effects on a bead pack partially saturated with air under flowing conditions of water. Air was injected into the bead pack as water flowed simultaneously through the sample. The initial partially saturated state was characterized with MR imaging density maps, free induction decay (FID) experiments, propagators, and velocity maps before the water flow rate was increased. After the maximum flow rate, the MR imaging density maps, FID experiments, propagators, and velocity maps were repeated and compared to the data taken before the maximum flow rate. The work performed here showed that a partially saturated single phase flow had global flow dynamics that returned to characteristic flow statistics once a steady state high flow rate was reached. A system was constructed to provide a controllable and predictable oscillatory flow in order to gain a better understanding of the impact of oscillatory flow on Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, specifically water, xanthan gum (XG), polyacrylamide (PAM) colloidal suspensions. The oscillatory flow system coupled with MR measured the velocity distributions and dynamics of the fluid undergoing oscillatory flow at specific points in the oscillation cycle.

Abstract:
Introdução: A miocardiopatia chagásica (MC) apresenta pior prognóstico que as etiologias isquêmica e não isquêmica de miocardiopatia, e acarreta alto custo. A fibrose miocárdica (FM) detectada pela Ressonância Magnética Cardíaca (RMC) mostrou-se um fator preditor independente de risco aumentado em diversas etiologias de insuficiência cardíaca. Na MC, a FM foi associada com marcadores conhecidos de pior prognóstico, como a disfunção ventricular esquerda e arritmia ventricular. Nossa hipótese é que a FM é um fator preditor independente de pior prognóstico na MC. Objetivos: Buscamos estabelecer o valor prognóstico da FM detectada pela RMC na predição de uma combinação de desfechos duros ou do desfecho secundário mortalidade por todas as causas. Adicionalmente, avaliamos se o valor prognóstico da FM é independente do Escore de Rassi. Métodos: Pacientes com MC foram incluídos retrospectivamente após a realização da RMC, que avaliou volumes e função cardíacos, além de quantificar a FM. Dados clínicos, de imagem e seguimento foram registrados, e o desfecho primário foi a combinação de mortalidade por todas as causas, transplante cardíaco, terapia antitaquicardia ou choque apropriado pelo cardiodesfibrilador implantável e morte súbita cardíaca abortada; o desfecho secundário foi mortalidade por todas as causas. Resultados: Foram incluídos no estudo130 pacientes, a maioria de mulher (53,9%), com idade média de 53,6±11,5 anos. A maioria dos pacientes (68,4%) não tinha sintomas de insuficiência cardíaca, apesar da dilatação ventricular esquerda (54%) e alterações da contratilidade (65,9%) serem comuns. A RMC mostrou dilatação do ventrículo esquerdo (volume diastólico final indexado médio de 118,6±50,5ml/m²) e disfunção sistólica (fração de ejeção média de 43,2±16,3%) e a FM foi identificada em 76,1%, massa média de 15,2±16,5g. Ao longo do seguimento médio de 6,8 anos, 58 (44,6%) pacientes atingiram o desfecho combinado e 45 (34,6%) faleceram. A MF associou-se ao desfecho primário como variável contínua (Razão de risco (RR) ajustada 1,031 (Intervalo de Confiança (IC) 95% 1,013-1,049; p=0.001) e nos pacientes com FM extensa ( >= 12,3g) (RR ajustado 2,107 (IC 95% 1,111-3,994I; p=0,022)) de forma independente ao Escore de Rassi. A FM expressa como variável contínua também se associou à morte por todas as causas (RRajustado1,028 (IC 95% 1,005-1,051; p=0,017)) de forma independente do Escore de Rassi, exceto quando analisada como variável categórica. Conclusões: A fibrose miocárdica é um preditor independente de pior prognóstico na miocardiopatia chagásica. Nossos dados apoiam o uso da RMC para estratificar melhor o risco nessa população e, possivelmente, guiar o tratamento
Background: Chagas cardiomyopathy (CC) portends worse prognosis than ischemic and other non-ischemic cardiomyopathies and carries a high economic burden. Myocardial fibrosis (MF) detected by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) has been demonstrated as an independent predictor of increased risk in several etiologies of heart failure. In CC, MF has been associated with know risk factors of poor outcome, such as left ventricular dysfunction and ventricular arrhythmia. We hypothesized that MF is an independent predictor of worse prognosis in CC. Objectives: we sought to determine the prognostic value of MF detected by CMR in predicting a combined endpoint of hard events or the secondary outcome of all-cause mortality. In addition, we evaluated if the prognostic value of MF is independent of the Rassi risk score. Methods: patients with CC were retrospectively followed after CMR evaluation of cardiac volumes, function and MF quantification. Clinical, imaging and follow-up data were recorded and the primary outcome was a combination of all-cause mortality, heart transplantation, anti-tachycardia pacing or appropriate shock from an implantable cardiac defibrillator and aborted sudden cardiac death; the secondary outcome was all-cause death. Results: 130 patients were included in the study, with a majority of females (53.9%) and a mean age of 53.6±11.5 years. Most patients (68.4%) had no symptoms of heart failure, even though left ventricular dilatation (54%) and wall-motion abnormalities (65.9%) were common. On CMR, left ventricular dilatation (mean end-diastolic volume index 118.6±50.5ml/m²) and dysfunction (mean ejection fraction 43.2±16.3%) were observed and MF was found in 76.1%, with a mean mass of 15.2±16.5g. Over a mean follow-up of > 6.2 years, 58 (44.6%) patients reached the combined endpoint and 45 (34.6%) patients died. Myocardial fibrosis mass was associated with the primary outcome both as continuous variable (adjusted HR 1.031 (1.013-1.049 95% CI; p=0.001) and in patients with extensive MF ( >= 12.3g) (adjusted HR 2.107 (1.111-3.994 95% CI; p=0.022), independently from the Rassi Score. Myocardial fibrosis mass expressed as a continuous variable was also associated with all-cause death (adjusted HR 1.028 (1.005-1.051 95% CI; p=0.017) independently from the Rassi Score, but not when analyzed as a categorical variable. Conclusions: Myocardial fibrosis is an independent predictor of adverse outcome in Chagas cardiomyopathy. Our data support the use of CMR in better stratifying risk in this population and possibly guiding therapy

Lanthanide ions have been used successfully in the synthesis of single molecule magnets for more than a decade. This particular class of molecules shows slow relaxation of their magnetization from purely molecular origin. This property come mainly from the strong single ion anisotropy of these ions, and from their high magnetic moment. In the case of complexes with more than one spin carrier (3d, 4f metal or organic radical), coupling interactions can arise. These are called magnetic exchange. In this framework, ab initio calculations are a useful tool for magneto-structural correlations

Abstract:
The Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) was Australian-led and largely Australian-funded, taking place over a 14-year window from 24 July 2003 to 30 June 2017. A mere few months beforehand, former Foreign Minister Alexander Downer argued that the deployment of Australian troops to the Solomon Islands would be unjustifiable to Australian taxpayers and likely resented in the region. This thesis seeks to investigate how RAMSI became ‘thinkable’ as a policy option through an examination of the representations of Australia and Solomon Islands in Australian political discourse during the mission’s early years (2003-2007). Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) was used to analyse archival material produced primarily by DFAT and AusAID as well as newspaper articles produced by The Australian from 2003-2007. While Australian foreign aid is often portrayed as altruistic, this thesis finds that the parallel representations of Solomon Islands as a ‘failing state’ harkens back to the inherently racialised paradigm of development and is a reiteration of the colonial discourses of the past.

Abstract:
This thesis describes the refinements, modifications and additions to a prototype Very High Frequency (VHF) Boundary Layer (BL) Spaced Antenna (SA) radar initially installed at the University of Adelaide's Buckland Park field site in 1997. Previous radar observations of the lowest few kilometres of the atmosphere, in particular the Atmospheric Boundary Layer, have used Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) radars. Unlike VHF radars, UHF radars are extremely sensitive to hydro-meteors and have difficulty in distinguishing clear-air echoes from precipitation returns. The advantages and requirements of using a VHF radar to observe the lowest heights is discussed in conjunction with some of the limitations. The successful operation of the system over long periods has enabled in-depth investigation of the performance of the system in a variety of conditions and locations. Observations were made from as low as 300m and as high as 8 km, dependent upon conditions. Comparisons between the radar and alternative wind measuring devices were carried out and examined. The antenna system of the radar is a critical component which was analysed in depth and subsequently re-designed. Through the use of numerical models and mea- surements, evaluation of different designs was accomplished. Further calibration of the remaining components of the full system has enabled estimations of the absolute received power. Additional parameters which can be derived with a calibrated radar were compared with values obtained by other authors, giving favourable results. Full Correlation Analysis (FCA) is the predominant technique used in this work. A brief discussion of the background theory and parameters which can be measured is described. A simple one-dimensional model was developed and combined with a 'radar backscatter model' to investigate potential sources of errors in the parameters determined using FCA with the VHF Boundary Layer Radar. In particular, underes- timations in the wind velocity were examined. The integration of a Radio Acoustic Sounding System (RASS) to obtain tempera- ture profiles is discussed. The theory of RASS measurements including the limitations and considerations which are required for the VHF BL radar are given. The difficulties encountered trying to implement such a system and the subsequent success using a Stratospheric Tropospheric (ST) Profiler in place of the BL radar is presented. Taken as a whole this thesis shows the success of the VHF BL to obtain mea- surements from as low as 300m. The validation of this prototype radar provides an alternative and, in certain situations, a superior device with which to study the lower troposphere.

Esta Tese estuda a produção dramatúrgica de Mauro Rasi, escrita entre os anos de 1978 e 1985. A partir da análise de peças como: Se Minha Empregada Falasse..., A Receita do Sucesso e A Mente Capta, abordo a construção da comicidade nestes textos. Além disso, o estudo desta obra traz para a cena um retrato cômico da sociedade brasileira daquele período. Rasi foi considerado pela crítica como um dos precursores do Teatro Besteirol, movimento importante da cultura brasileira na década de 1980. A avaliação de como o Besteirol foi abordado por nossos ensaístas e críticos é parte integrante desta Tese.
This Thesis examines the theatrical production of Mauro Rasi, which spans the years 1978 to 1985. Through analyzing plays such as Se Minha Empregada Falasse, A Re-ceita do Sucesso, and A Mente Capta, I discuss the comical characteristics of these texts. Moreover, the analysis of these works brings to light a comedic portrait of Brazil-ian society in that time period. Rasi was considered by critics of the forefathers of Teatro Besteirol, a major cultural movement in Brazilian during the 1980s. The analysis of how Besteirol was approached by our authors and critics is an integral part of this Thesis.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The primary purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a significant difference between the achievement motivation levels of male and female subjects, and those of white and black subjects. Gender and race are, according to research, two key factors in determining the achievement motivation level of people. These two factors will also, as the result of legislation, play an increasingly significant role in the future in determining the career progress of employees in South African organisations. The secondary aim of the present study was firstly to determine what effect gender, race, age and education had on the achievement motivation level of subjects. Secondly, the present study focussed on the relationship between achievement motivation, work performance and salary progression. A stratified sample of 240 subjects was selected from the clerical staff employed by an Insurance company. The sample reflected the composition of the company in respect of gender and race. The Indian, coloured and black subjects were grouped together under the classification of "black subjects". The 89 subjects utilised in the research around the relationship between achievement motivation, work performance and salary progression, were a part of the total sample of 240 subjects. The 89 subjects were not selected in a specific manner. They were, however, employees for whom salary information and supervisor assessment of work performance were available. The Work Preference Questionnaire was used to assess the achievement motivation of subjects. Work performance of subjects was assessed by supervisors on a four point scale. Salary progression was calculated by expressing subjects' 1994 salary as a percentage of their 1992 salary. Information in respect of educational level and age was provided by subjects themselves. Correlation coefficients between the variables were calculated to determine the existence and direction of any relationships between the variables. Multiple regression analysis was then used. The significance of the difference between the averages of white and black subjects in respect of achievement motivation scores was calculated. The most important findings can be summarised as follows: A significant difference was found between the achievement motivation scores of white (X = 10,95) and black subjects (X = 9,6), t(238) = 3,5736, pAFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die hoofdoelstelling met hierdie ondersoek was om te bepaal of daar 'n beduidende verskil tussen die prestasiemotiveringsvlakke van manlike en vroulike subjekte, en tussen dié van blanke en swart subjekte was. Geslag en ras wat volgens navorsing twee sleutelfaktore is in die bepaling van die prestasiemotiveringvlak van persone gaan, as gevolg van wetgewing, in die toekoms 'n toenemende belangrike rol in die beroepsvordering van persone in Suid- Afrikaanse organisasies speel. Die newedoelstellings met die ondersoek was eerstens om te bepaal wat die effek van geslag, ras, ouderdom en opvoedkundige vlak op die prestasiemotiveringsvlak van subjekte was. Tweedens het die ondersoek ook gefokus op die onderlinge verband tussen prestasiemotivering, werksprestasie en salarisprogressie . 'n Gestratifiseerde steekproef van 240 subjekte is uit die klerklike personeel van 'n lewensversekeringsmaatskappy geselekteer. Die steekproef is so saamgestel dat dit die komposisie van die maatskappy in terme van geslag en ras weerspieël het. Die Indiër, bruin en swart subjekte is saamgegroepeer onder die klassifikasie van "swart subjekte". Die 89 subjekte wat betrek is by die navorsing rondom die onderlinge verband tussen prestasiemotivering, werksprestasie en salarisprogressie, was 'n deel van die totale steekproef van 240 subjekte. Die 89 subjekte is nie op 'n spesifieke wyse uit die steekproef geselekteer me. Hulle was egter werknemers vir wie inligting ten opsigte van salarisprogressie en toesighouerbeoordeling beskikbaar was. Die Werkvoorkeurvraelys is gebruik om 'n meting van die prestasiemotiveringsvlak van elke subjek te verkry. Werksprestasie van subjekte is deur toesighouers op 'n vierpuntskaal beoordeel. Subjekte se 1994-salaris is uitgedruk as 'n persentasie van hul 1992-salaris om 'n aanduiding van salarisprogressie te verskaf. Inligting ten opsigte van opvoedkundige vlak en ouderdom is deur subjekte self verstrek. Korrelasiekoëffisiënte tussen die onderskeie veranderlikes is eers bereken sodat enige moontlike verwantskappe tussen die veranderlikes en die rigting daarvan bepaal kon word. Meervoudige regressieanalise is daarna uitgevoer. Beduidendheid van verskille tussen die rekenkundige gemiddeldes van swart en blanke subjekte ten opsigte van prestasiemotiveringstellings is bepaal. Die belangrikste bevindinge kan soos volg opgesom word: Daar is 'n beduidende verskil gevind tussen die prestasiemotiveringstellings van blanke (X = 10,95) en swart subjekte (X = 9,6), t (238) = 3,5736, P < 0,001. Die verskil tussen die prestasiemotiveringstelling van mans en vroue was nie beduidend nie. Meervoudige regressieontleding het getoon dat die effek van ras op prestasiemotivering beduidend was, nadat die effek van ouderdom, opvoedkundige vlak en geslag verwyder is, F(I,235) = 4,425, P < 0,05. Meervoudige regressieontledings ten opsigte van die effek van geslag, ouderdom en opvoedkundige kwalifikasies op prestasiemotivering, het daarop gedui dat die effek van elk van hierdie veranderlikes op prestasiemotivering nadat die effek van die ander veranderlikes verwyder is, nie beduidend was nie. Daar is 'n beduidende verband gevind tussen prestasiemotivering en salarisprogressie, r(89) = 0,21, P < 0,05. 'n Belangrike bevinding van die ondersoek waarvan besluitnemers en beleidmakers wat betrokke is by regstellende aksie binne die organisasie waar die navorsing onderneem is, behoort kennis te neem, is dat die persone (swartmense, bruinmense en Indiërs) wat die begunstigdes van hierdie aksies is, nie oor dieselfde vlak van prestasiemotivering beskik as die persone (blankes) wat hulle moet vervang nie. Indien aanvaar word dat prestasiemotivering 'n beduidende bydrae lewer tot die ekonomiese welvaart van gemeenskappe, en dat ekonomiese welvaart 'n belangrike rol kan speel in die bepaling van die sukses van regstellende aksie, is dit vanselfsprekend en noodsaaklik dat die ontwikkeling van prestasiemotivering by hierdie persone aandag moet geniet. Nog'n bevinding waarvan besluitnemers in sakeondernemings spesifiek moet kennis neem, is dat vroue in hierdie ondersoek nie oor 'n laer prestasiemotiveringsvlak as mans beskik nie. Dieredes vir die stadige vordering van vroue in vergelyking met mans in die sakewêreld, moet waarskynlik eerder toegeskryf word aan faktore buite beheer van vroue, soos byvoorbeeld maatskappybeleid, maatskappypolitiek en bestuurspraktyke gebaseer op stereotipe aannames oor vroue. Die resultate van die ondersoek het ook getoon dat werknemers finansieel beloon word na gelang van hul vlak van prestasiemotivering. Hierdie benadering is waarskynlik 'n berekende poging deur bestuur om deur middel van die verlening van erkenning, werknemers wat 'n positiewe bydrae tot maatskappy resultate lewer, te behou. Terselfdertyd dien dié praktyk ook as 'n aansporing vir werknemers wat nie dieselfde mate van positiewe bydrae tot die maatskappy lewer nie, om dit wel te probeer doen.

Syfte: Att undersöka om frånvaro av sederingsmål påverkar sederingsnivå samt att kartlägga sederingsdjupet, bedömt enligt Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale (RASS-skalan) hos intuberade patienter på IVA, Norrlands Universitetssjukhus (NUS). Bakgrund: Vikten av en adekvat sedering är något som medvetandegjorts de senaste åren och trenden inom intensivvård har gått från användandet av djup sedering med muskelblockad till en mer ytlig sederingsstrategi. Översedering leder till olika former av komplikationer i form av förlängd ventilatortid och vårdtid samt ökad mortalitet. Undersedering ökar riskerna för stress och smärta. En adekvat sederingsnivå innebär att patienten är lugn och komfortabel men lättväckt. För att erhålla den optimala sederingsnivån och därigenom undvika de negativa effekterna av både över- och undersedering, är sederingsskalor ett viktigt hjälpmedel. Design: En journalgranskning med kvantitativ ansats och med retrospektiv design utfördes. Metod: Under perioden 1 januari till 30 juni vårdades totalt 422 patienter på IVA, NUS. Efter granskning enligt inklusions- och exklusionskriterier återstod 46 patienter som ingick i studien. Journalerna granskades med avseende på ordinerade mål och bedömda nivåer enligt RASS. Populationsbeskrivning samt insamlade RASS mål och nivåer fördes in i Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS 23,0). Resultat: Hos studiens 46 patienter registrerades totalt 216 dygn där patienterna varit sederade och intuberade. Av dessa saknades ordinerat sederingsmål 47% av dygnen. Frånvaro av ordinerat sederingsmål påverkade inte sederingsdjupet så att statistisk signifikant skillnad förelåg mellan patienter med och utan mål. Totalt registrerades 1048 uppmätta RASS nivåer med syfte att kartlägga sederingsdjup. Medelvärdet för varje enskild patient per dygn räknades ut och alla medelvärden sammanställdes. Sederingsdjupen låg på en lägre nivå än -3 de första fyra dygnen för att därefter gå mot en ytligare nivå. Konklusion: Genom att identifierar bakomliggande faktorer till smärta och oro kan sjuksköterskan bidra med att minska många negativa konsekvenser av inadekvat sedering. Det var ett positivt fynd att sederingsdjupen förändrades över tid till en mer, enligt litteraturen adekvat, sederingsnivå. Utifrån resultatet ses ett behov av fler studier för att kunna utröna vad som påverkar RASS-nivåerna och för att utvärdera hur adekvat sederade patienter är. Det skulle vara av intresse att undersöka detta på en större population och under en längre tidsperiod.
Aim: To investigate if absence of goals for sedation affect the level of sedation and to map out the depth of sedation, assessed according to the Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale (RASS-scale) on intubated patients at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Norrlands Universitetssjukhus (NUS). Background: The importance of adequate sedation is something that has been raised to awareness the last years and the trend within intensive care has gone from extensive use of sedatives with neuromuscular blocking agents to a more lightly sedative strategy. Over-sedation leads to different kinds of complications such as prolonged mechanical ventilation and hospital stay and also increases mortality rates. Under-sedation increases the risk for stress and pain. An adequate level of sedation is defined as when the patient is calm and comfortable yet easy to arouse from sleep. To obtain the appropriate level of sedation, and thereby avoiding the negative effects of both over- and under-sedation, sedation scales are an important tool. Design: Data was collected using medical records. A quantitative approach with retrospective design was performed. Method: From january 1st to june 30th 2015 a totalt of 422 patients were admitted to the ICU, NUS. After auditing the medical reccords according to the inclusion- and exklusionkriterias 46 patients were included in the study. The medical records were audited regarding sedation goals and sedation scores according to the RASS scale. All collected patients’ characteristics, RASS goals and levels were typed in to the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS 23,0). Results: The 46 patients in the study were sedated and intubated a totalt of 216 days. Sedation goals were absent 47% of those days. An absence of sedation goals did not affect the depth of sedation, there were no significant difference between patients with and without sedation goals. In totalt 1048 sedation scores as measured by the RASS scale were collected with the purpose of maping out the sedation depth. The mean for each patient per every 24 hours were calculated and compiled. The sedation scores were lower than -3 the first four days, thereafter the scores changed towards a less heavy sedation. Conclusion: By identifying underlying factors for pain and anxiety, the ICU nurse can reduce the many negative consequences of inadequate sedation. It was a positive finding that the depth of sedation changed over time towards a, according to previous studies, more appropriate level of sedation. The results indicate that there is a need for further studies to investigate what affect the levels of sedation and to assess how appropriate patients are sedated. It would be of interest to examine this on a larger group of patients and for a longer period of time.

Com objetivo de investigar a noção de autobiografia no teatro, esta dissertação discute os critérios que poderiam credenciar um texto teatral como legítimo representante das escritas de si e seus possíveis desdobramentos. A reflexão parte da noção de “pacto autobiográfico”, de Philippe Lejeune, que estabelece parâmetros teóricos para essa categoria literária. A partir desse arcabouço teórico, o trabalho analisa a chamada trilogia autobiográfica e a peça Pérola, de Mauro Rasi. O corpus em questão mostra-se oportuno por permitir o desenvolvimento da discussão proposta, assim como demonstração do papel exercido pelos meios de comunicação de massa na recepção de autobiografias. Através do aparato jornalístico e publicitário, que circunda a experiência do leitor, a mídia atua como um canal extra-literário, capaz de preencher eventuais lacunas na relação de identidade entre autor, narrador e personagem. A partir disso, a dissertação propõe uma espécie de alargamento do “pacto autobiográfico”, denominada “pacto por procuração”.
Proposing an investigantion about the notion of autobiography in theatre, this dissertation discusses the criteria that might accredit a drama text in the autobiographical gender and their possible implications. This reflexion starts from the “autobiographical pact” concept, by Philippe Lejeune, which establishes theoretical support to this category. From this background, this research analyses Mauro Rasi’s trilogy of plays and Pérola. This corpus allows the development of the proposed discussion, as well as demonstrates the mass media acting in the reception process. Through the journalistic and publicity production, the media acts as an extra-literary way, able to fill out eventual gaps between author, narrator and character identity relationship. At last, this dissertation suggests a sort of “autobiographical pact” enlargement, so-called “pact by proxy”.

The aim of this study was to assess the validity of an objective method of speech intelligibility, the Rapid Speech Transmission Index (RASTI), in elementary school classrooms, The RASTI can be obtained more quickly than subjective measures of speech intelligibility and has been shown to be highly valid with adult listeners in auditoriums. In this study RASTI values were correlated with scores on a subjective test of speech intelligibility, the word intelligibility by Picture Identification (WIPI) test, for 45 students in two elementary classrooms (grades 1 through 3 and grade5). Results indicated that the RASTI value is a poor predictor of subjective speech intelligibility (WIPI) scores for these students. There was no significant difference between the correlations obtained in the two classrooms or between the correlations obtained with the average and largest of the three RASTI values and the WIPI scores. Further study needs to be done to determine the applicability of the RASTI to classroom environments.

Une simple mutation (D3. 32A, D100A) dans le récepteur 5-HT4 rend ce Récepteur couplé aux protéines G (RCPG) totalement insensible à la sérotonine (5-HT), son ligand endogène. Ce RCPG, induisant la production d'AMPc, est Activable Seulement par des Ligands Synthétiques, ce qui en fait un RASSL. Cette seule mutation modifie sensiblement sa pharmacologie, les ligands synthétiques devenant globalement plus activateurs sur le RASSL que dans le récepteur sauvage. Dans la première partie de la thèse, la modélisation moléculaire associée à la mutagenèse dirigée a permis de comprendre l'origine de ces différences au niveau pharmacologique. Cette étude a, en effet, conduit à mettre en évidence l'implication de deux résidus T3. 36 et W6. 48 dans l'activation des ligands synthétiques dans le récepteur sauvage et le RASSL. L'absence de l'aspartate, dans le RASSL, oblige le ligand à se fixer moins profondément dans la poche de liaison ce qui lui permet d'atteindre plus facilement ces deux résidus. Dans la seconde partie de la thèse, les spécificités pharmacologiques du RASSL ont permis d'étudier le rôle fonctionnel de la dimérisation des RCPG de classe A. Nous avons ainsi clairement démontré que deux sous-unités activées conduisaient à une plus forte réponse cellulaire qu'une seule sous-unité activée. Dans la dernière partie de la thèse, l'outil pharmacologique RASSL-5-HT4, simple producteur d'AMPc, a été introduit dans les neurones dopaminergiques dégénérant dans la maladie de Parkinson. L'augmentation de la production d'AMPc de façon contrôlée par les ligands synthétiques a permis de protéger ces neurones dans un modèle in vitro de dégénérescence.

The thesis explores the roles and reponsibilities of New Zealand Police deployed under the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands, established in 2003. Their work under this banner continues a growing trend that sees the deployment of constabulary police officers to post-conflict societies to re-establish order and build a framework for sustainable peace. Where the existing literature considers the normative dimensions of this trend, this thesis looks more closely at the micro-level interaction between international police officers and citizens of post-conflict societies. In particular, it asks questions about the suitability and sustainability of the community policing model; a model that has developed over several decades in an internal law-enforcement context but is relatively new to the peace-building sphere. The research focus is drawn from the extensive literature on the use of community policing in domestic contexts but is adapted in order to speak back to the literature on peace-bulding and international policing. The everyday experiences of New Zealand Police were deployed to Solomon Islands were explored through semi-structured interviews. In particular, the thesis found that officers experiences little of the ethnic conflict that had, according to international media, been the hallmark of the Tension period and that they showed a nuanced understanding of the social and political climate of the communities they operated in. It further found that, while officers were often keen to show respect for local tradition and local power structures, they also saw that in some cases these structures needed to be broken down for the safety and well-being of local people, particularly women and children. The New Zealand style of community policing sometimes clashed with that other contingents but overall the strength of the personal and professional relationships they had with those they worked with was the most decisive factor influencing their experience. While much of the discussion centres on the community model, the findings highlight the importance of people in the peace-building process. The model played an important role in facilititating a broad-based policing initiative in Solomon Islands but it was the personal investment by individual officers going about their everyday work that was often crucial in breaking down the barriers to peace. The finding points to the importance of empowering communities in exercising ownership over the peace-building process and the role that police officers from another country can play in encouraging that process.
