Tennessee, State of. "Washington County Geographic Features." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 1986. https://dc.etsu.edu/rare-maps/8.

Full text
Abstract:
This Washington County, Tennessee map includes geographic features including streams and mountain peaks, as well man made features such as highways, railroads, communities, and cemeteries. While the publication date is not included, it was received by the Documents, Law and Maps Department in 1986. However, due to the spelling of a few of the landmarks, the actual publication likely predates 1983. Some points of interest include the Veteran's Administration Mountain Home which is now the site of the Quillen College of Medicine and White Rock Ridge located where Buffalo Mountain Park would be established a decade later in 1994.

Gutsche, Robert Edward Jr. "Mediated constructions and lived experiences of place: an analysis of news, sourcing, and mapping." Diss., University of Iowa, 2012. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1462.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation advances previous research on the journalistic interpretive community by placing news at the center of a community's construction of place. By focusing on the construction of Iowa City, Iowa's "Southeast Side" - neighborhoods home to predominantly newly arrived black residents from Chicago and other urban areas - this study identifies dominant news characterizations of the Southeast Side that mark the place as a "ghetto" or "inner city." Beyond providing information about community issues and social conditions from southeastern neighborhoods, the term Southeast Side performed a singular ideological purpose: to identify and maintain dominant community values throughout the rest of Iowa City. Racialized and stereotyped news narratives of urban people, places, and problems in a place called the Southeast Side created an ideological boundary between those in and outside the Southeast Side. Such a boundary subjugated the Southeast Side's cultural diversity and its people, presenting them as being counter to Midwestern values and a threat to notions of a safe, white and historically homogeneous community. Indeed, the creation of Southeast Side was just as much about creating an "inner city" as it was about constructing notions of Iowa City itself. Through mental mapping, this project then compares dominant news characterizations to those made by Southeast Side residents, journalists, and public officials. In the end, this study explores cultural meanings that emerged from examining the similarities or differences between the place-making of residents, journalists, and news sources. This study reveals place-making as a fundamental role of the journalistic community and identifies another ideological function of the press in that they assign power and meanings by describing news by where it happens. Journalists and media scholars have long talked about the press as improving community journalism to meet the notion of the public sphere. Yet, this dissertation is not another such study that only encourages journalists to alter how they report on local news and communities. Instead, this study suggests that journalists and scholars recognize the cultural power of journalistic place-making and the challenge to their authority to do so by residents from a particular place.

Fernandes, Mauro Vivaldino.

Full text
Abstract:
Coal injection through of the blast furnaces tuyeres is one of the ways to reduce coke consumption and dependence in the blast furnace process in addition to lowering of cost of production of pig iron. There are increasing trends in achieving high substitution rates of coke through increased rates of coal injection and productivity. This topic hasbeen a great technological challenge and involves different aspects such as coal blending and characterization of blended mixtures and their influence on fuel replacement ratio and achieving process stability, high productivity and reduction in costs. The objective of the study was to evaluate a methodology for the calculation of the rate of substitution of coke by coal fines in the blast furnaces of Usiminas, Ipatinga, Brazil. The results show that the calorific power of injected coal has a decisive influence on replacement ratio. Besides, a model has been developed considering conditions of the blast furnaces in Usiminas relating variation of fuel-rate with injection rate and calorific power of the coal (or coal blends). The equivalent value achieved for the thermal input was 5000kcal for each kg in the fuel rate. For example, considering an injection rate of 100kg/t of pig iron, changing the coal with 7500kcal/kg by another, with 7700kcal/kg, the variation in the fuel rate is 4kg/t of pig iron. This correction in the variation of fuel rate (coke rate) contribute to the stability of process, once the changes of injected coals (or blends) brings operational variations in the blast furnace

Message authentication, which ensures that a received message comes from its acclaimed sender, is of fundamental importance for secure communication systems. We consider in this work a physical layer authentication system employing tag signals embedded in the message to provide a robust authentication method. This work diverges from previous work in the area when it comes to the tag generation method. While the previous works use methods based on cryptographic hash functions or on the channel side information our system employs unidimensional chaotic maps to generate these tags. Due to the loss of information about the initial condition of chaotic maps, we show that they are strong candidates for the tag generation process. We prove that chaotic tags provide a positive lower bound on the unconditional security of the system. Additionally, we calculate the probability of success for three possible attacks to the authentication system: impersonation, substitution and replay. Finally, we analyze how the system parameters affect these probabilities and some performance metrics (bit error rate, outage probability, probability of false negative) and explore the tradeoff between security and performance in order to provide guidelines to design the system.

Christensen, Bethany Mariah. "Using Mid-Season NDVI Data from Drones to Produce Variable Rate Fertilizer Maps in Wheat." Thesis, North Dakota State University, 2019. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/31551.

Full text
Abstract:
Variable rate prescription maps can improve nitrogen use efficiency within a field by directing N applications where it is needed. If NDVI collected with a drone could be used to predict yield, it also could be used to develop N rate prescription maps. Experiments on wheat were carried out in farmer fields and in small plots. Small plot experiments consisted of six rates of nitrogen and NDVI was collected from sensors on a drone and was correlated to yield and protein after harvest. NDVI measurements were also collected from farmer fields that had a nitrogen rich strip applied to the field along with a nitrogen poor strip to induce crop growth variability and were compared to the farmer?s fertilizer rate. NDVI did not always predict yield. The best time to predict yield was after anthesis. Additional research is needed to determine factors that affect the prediction of NDVI in wheat.

Bonnes, Stephanie Marie. "Gender and racial stereotyping in rape coverage: an analysis of rape coverage in Grocott's Mail." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002972.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyzes rape coverage in a Grahamstown newspaper, Grocott’s Mail. Critical discourse analysis is used to discuss and analyze articles about rape that appear in Grocott’s Mail between October 14th 2008 and October 29th 2009. Drawing on existing literature on ‘rape myths’ in media coverage of rape, this thesis argues that Grocott’s Mail perpetuates racial and gender stereotypes through the way in which it reports on rape. While not all of the articles included in the analysis use rape myths, most use one or more when discussing rape incidents. Specifically, Grocott’s Mail tends to use rape myths that blame the victim for the rape and de-emphasize the role of the perpetrator in the rape. This is problematic as it sustains existing racial and gender inequalities.

Abstract:

Recorders conforming to IRIG Standards have served the data recording community well for many years. Initially, most systems were analog in nature, recording data in either direct or FM modes but as the need for digital recording developed, the IRIG recorder was successfully adapted for this purpose by the addition of formatting and coding sub-systems to form the High Density Digital Recorder (HDDR). Today, user requirements for higher speed, higher capacity and more convenient systems have presented equipment designers with new challenges in terms of the correct choice of technology and system architecture. It is not surprising that system designers should turn for inspiration first to the very high speed transverse and helical products which had been developed for the broadcast industry since these technologies possess many of the attributes necessary for a high rate digital data recorder. It is unfortunate that it has now become a truism that the only logical progression from the longitudinal IRIG system is by means of rotary technology. Recent developments in a technology known as micro-track recording now call this assumption into question. Recording systems based on micro-track technology are available and others are in an advanced state of development, and these offer a costeffective, attractive and low risk alternative to rotary systems for both high rate data capture and tape mass storage applications.

Toure, Moussa. Thesis, Montpellier, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015MONTS149/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Pertraction is an emerging liquid-liquid extraction technology which use a membrane barrier as surface area between the aqueous phase and solvent. It thus offers the possibility to use very emulsive solvent and / or consisting of a pure extractant without any necessity of different density with the aqueous phase. The advantage of using a pure extractant is the possibility to have a high loading capacty of solvent (>100 g.L-1). So, we have studied the feasibility of pertraction of metals of interest by using a pure extractant as solvent. The extraction of rare earth metals (neodymium (Nd), praseodymium (Pr) and dysprosium (Dy)) was chosen as the aim of this study. The approach was defined by tree steps : identification of selective solvent for lanthanids (Nd as model), set-up and optimization of pertraction module, mass transfer modeling. The screening of solvent was governed by namely three criteria : its affinity for Nd, its viscosity and solubility in water. To avoid fire risk, the flashpoint of solvent was also taken into account in the selection. In this framework, N, N-dibutylacetamide was selected especially for its moderate viscosity (<5 mPa.s) but its employment required the use of nitrates for increase its affinity for Nd. With high loading capacity (> 126 g.L-1), a remarkable application of DBAc could be its use for selectively extract Nd, Pr, Dy and separate them each other from magnet waste containing impurities such as iron, boron, nickel, cobalt. Pertraction of Nd by DBAc pure has been made in recycle mode on polypropylene hollow fiber module. The mass transfer model has been developed on the basis of conventional assumptions of resistances in series theory in order to predict the concentration of Nd at different times. It has required some input parameters such as diffusion coefficient of Nd in aqueous and organic phases. Taylor dispersion analysis (TDA) has been used for the experimental determination of diffusion coefficients. Experimental data and model results were found to be in good agreement for the system DBAc/Nd. The values of mass transfer coefficients in films and membrane indicate that the mass transfer limiting step is the diffusion of DBAc-Nd in the solvent present in the membrane pores and in the diffusional film of the solvent. This can be explained by the relative high viscosity of solvent because diffusion coefficient is inversely proportional to viscosity in Stock-Einstein correlation. A development perspective of pertraction as liquid-liquid technology is the recovery of refractory metals like tantalum (Ta) and niobium (Nb). Preliminary studies for identify selective solvent present the properties of methylacetophenone pure (MAcPh) to extract selectively Ta from hydrofluoric solution of capacitor waste containing iron, manganese, nickel and silver as impurities with a loading capacity superior than 150 g.L-1

Yamashita, Miyo. "United controversies of Benetton : rethinking race in light of French poststructuralist theory and postmodernism." Thesis, McGill University, 1993. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=69530.

Abstract:
Postmodernist texts by non-white authors consistently challenge accepted theoretical discourses with some notion of race or ethnicity. Until recently however, race as a unique category for theoretical investigation has remained largely unexplored. The author here outlines how both a variety of theoretical disscussions about race and ethnicity, about difference, and about experience, have formed the basis of how race is currently talked about in postmodernist discourse and how these various postmodernist discussions about race and difference may both enrich and be enriched by a theoretical examination of French poststructuralist theory. Employing the popular Benetton ads as a vehicle for theorizing a common ground between postmodernist and poststructuralist theory, the author argues that current theoretical discourse must reconceptualize not so much the multiple and varied definitions of "race" by which it has tried to account for the experiences of non-white subjects worldwide, but the very grounds upon which those definitions have been constructed. Race can no longer be thought of as a collective identity predicated on biological similarities but must be re-thought in terms of a transformational metaphor, a multivocal sign for political solidarity and alliance among dispersed groups of people sharing common historical experiences of discrimination and oppression. On this note, the author will herein argue that the naturalized connotations of race must be disarticulated out of racial discourse and rearticulated in such a way as to emphasize race as a contingent, multi-accentual signifier constructed out of varying social and political practices.
