Abstract:
This chapter explains chance variation and statistical tests, including discrete and continuous measures, the concept of significance, one and two sided test, exact tests, precision and confidence limits. It shows tests of differences in proportions and chi-square tests, the Mantel-Haenszel test, and calculation of confidence limits, for simple tables and for stratified data. It covers heterogeneity tests, multiplicative and additive models, ordered exposure variables and tests of trend. It explains statistical tests for matched studies and in multivariate models. Multiple testing, the Bonferroni correction, issues of hypothesis testing and hypothesis generation, and subgroup analyses are discussed. Stopping rules and repeated testing in trials is covered. It explains how to calculate study power and the necessary size of the study. The chapter describes time to event analysis, including survival curves, product-limit and actuarial or life-table methods, and the calculation of confidence limits, relative survival ratios, the log rank test with control for confounding, and multivariate analysis.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 analyzes the many religious rites, including the worship of Heaven, nature, spirits, heroes, and religious figures in public cults as well as domestic rituals. It gives an introduction to the cultic life of the Vietnamese and a Christian evaluation of traditional worship. In particular, it describes prominent sacrifices—to Heaven and Earth; to the Divine Farmer and other spirits of nature; to imperial ancestors—as well as some of the important cults in Vietnamese society: the cults of Confucius and the military; of the three ranks of spirits (supreme, middle rank, and lower rank); and of religious figures: Mother Goddess, Lady Buddha of Compassion, and Jade Emperor. From a Christian perspective, these rites challenge the notion of monotheistic worship and display a reluctance on the part of the Christian to completely dismiss these rites.

Abstract:
This chapter poses a question on the now-popular image of women’s participation and their prominent role in the Hasidic movement. First, it argues that the exceptional cases of female Hasidic leaders, so popular in the academic writing on the subject, are not representative of the broader Hasidic world. Instead, the chapter offers an analysis of the possible forms of association with Hasidism among the wives, daughters, and mothers of rank-and-file Hasidim in the constitutive, identity-forming spaces and activities of the Hasidic community, especially prayer houses and pilgrimages. It strongly demonstrates the women were institutionally excluded from Hasidism and very often distanced themselves. This reopens the question of the possible forms of women’s association with Hasidism other than institutional participation.

Abstract:
Since the 1960s, breakthroughs in agriculture have made it possible to satisfy the world's increasing requirements for food. Can this trend continue over the next thirty years when the world population is projected to exceed eight billion? This book takes a critical look at the immediate challenges for feeding the population just a generation from now. Based on the 10th International Symposium sponsored by the Nutrition Committee and the Trustees of the Rank Prize Funds, the volume examines the full range of related issues, from food economics to resource allocation and crop yields. Beginning with an analysis of future food needs, the articles cover basic resources and constraints, applications of science to increase yield, the role of animal products in feeding eight billion people, and diverse social issues. The book provides insights into some of the most important questions we will be faced with in the coming years, making it an invaluable resource for a wide range of researchers in agriculture, the environment, and public policy.
