This generalises the original Dvoretzky problem by considering random coverings of fractal sets by non-homogeneously distributed balls. We compute the almost sure dimension of lim supn →+∞B(Xn, n−s) for every s ≥ 0, which depends on s and the multifractal features of μ. Our results include the inhomogeneous covering of $\mathbb{T}^d$ and Sierpinski carpets.

Abstract Phosphorylation is one of the main regulators of cellular signaling typically occurring in flexible parts of folded proteins and in intrinsically disordered regions. It can have distinct effects on the chemical environment as well as on the structural properties near the modification site. Secondary chemical shift analysis is the main NMR method for detection of transiently formed secondary structure in intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) and the reliability of the analysis depends on an appropriate choice of random coil model. Random coil chemical shifts and sequence correction factors were previously determined for an Ac-QQXQQ-NH2-peptide series with X being any of the 20 common amino acids. However, a matching dataset on the phosphorylated states has so far only been incompletely determined or determined only at a single pH value. Here we extend the database by the addition of the random coil chemical shifts of the phosphorylated states of serine, threonine and tyrosine measured over a range of pH values covering the pKas of the phosphates and at several temperatures (www.bio.ku.dk/sbinlab/randomcoil). The combined results allow for accurate random coil chemical shift determination of phosphorylated regions at any pH and temperature, minimizing systematic biases of the secondary chemical shifts. Comparison of chemical shifts using random coil sets with and without inclusion of the phosphoryl group, revealed under/over estimations of helicity of up to 33%. The expanded set of random coil values will improve the reliability in detection and quantification of transient secondary structure in phosphorylation-modified IDPs.

Abstract:

The overall aim of this thesis is to compare different methods for calculation of Core-Level shifts in metallic alloys. The methods compared are the Initial State model, the Complete screening and the Transition state model. Core-level shifts can give information of chemical bonding and about the electronic structure in solids.

The basic theory used is the so-called Density-Functional-Theory, in conjunction with the Local-Density Approximation and the Coherent-Potential- Approximation. The metallic alloys used are Silver-Palladium, Copper-Palladium, Copper-Gold and Copper-Platinum, all inface-centered-cubic configuration.

The complete screening- and the transition-state model are found to be in better agreement with experimental results than those calculated with the initial state model. This is mainly due to the fact that the two former models includes final-state effects, whereas the last one do not. The screening parameters within the Coherent-Potential approximation are also investigated. It is found that the Screened-Impurity Model can extend the validity of the Coherent-Potential-Approximation and increase it's accuracy.

The volatility of commodities prices such as oil or minerals is an important issue for small and open economies that depends on raw materials. For example, in many countries of Latin America, the volatility of commodities can a¤ect operational cost or investment schedules of business related to the primary sector. At the macroeconomic level, a high volatility can provocate changes in the current account and in capital in ows, or, on the side of importers, increase uncertainty about production costs and in ation. Therefore, modeling volatility of commodities prices would be useful for private agents and policy makers. For the rst ones, it gives valuable information for better options contracts that allow hedge under big uncertainty, and for the second ones, it could help to a better understanding of business cycles given the correlation between mineral prices uctuations, capital in ows and investment expectations.

La literatura econométrica y nanciera ha mostrado que la volatilidad de los retornos bursátiles y cambiarios presenta un comportamiento de larga memoria. Otro hecho mostrado en la literatura es que este comportamiento de larga memoria puede ser espúreo y que la volatilidad sigue un proceso de corta memoria con cambios de nivel aleatorios. En este trabajo se sigue el enfoque planteado por Lu y Perron (2010) y Li y Perron (2013), estimando el modelo de cambios de nivel aleatorios al logaritmo de los retornos absolutos del Índice General de la Bolsa de Valores de Lima (IGBVL) y del Tipo de cambio bancario compra. El modelo consiste en la suma de dos componentes: un proceso de corta memoria y un componente de cambios de nivel aleatorios. El primer componente se ha modelado como un proceso autorregresivo de orden 1 (AR(1)). El componente de cambios de nivel se especi ca como la suma acumulada de un proceso que es cero con probabilidad 1 y es una variable aleatoria con probabilidad . Los datos utilizados para realizar las estimaciones comprenden, para el IGBVL, desde el 03/01/1990 hasta el 13/06/2013 y para el tipo de cambio desde 03/01/1997 hasta el 24/06/2013. Los resultados que muestran las estimaciones son concluyentes como los obtenidos en Lu y Perron (2010). La primera conclusión que puede mostrarse es que la probabilidad de cambio de nivel es pequeña pero signi cativa, indicando que estos cambios de nivel son responsables del comportamiento de larga memoria observado en las series de volatilidad. Una vez calculada la probabilidad de cambio de nivel para cada serie, es posible calcular el número total de quiebres. Asimismo, es posible calcular el componente de cambios de nivel y sustraerlo de la serie de volatilidad. Al calcular la función de autocorrelación de esta nueva serie residual veremos que ya no existe presencia del comportamiento de larga memoria. Otros resultados importantes que se observan son los efectos que tienen los cambios de nivel en los modelos clásicos de larga memoria como GARCH y ARFIMA. La esti- mación de los modelos autorregresivos con heteroscedasticidad condicional descontando los cambios de nivel muestran que estos componentes son introducidos arti cialmente por los cambios de nivel. Además, la estimación de modelos fraccionales a las series residuales de volatilidad menos el componente de cambios de nivel muestra que el parámetro fraccional es menor o muy cercano a cero, lo que indica que no existe un comportamiento de larga memoria. Por otra parte, el desempeño del modelo RLS en términos de predicción es mejor que los modelos ARFIMA (p,d,q) de acuerdo al Model Con dence Set (MCS) planteado por Hansen et al. (2011).

Abstract:

Ab-initio results of the core-level shift and the distribution about the average for the 3d5/2 electrons of Ag, Pd and 2p3/2 of Cu are presented for the face-centered-cubic AgPd and CuPd random alloys. The complete screening model, which includes both initial and final states effects in the same scheme, has been used in the investigations.

The alloys have been modeled with a supercell containing 256 atoms. Density-functional theory calculations are carried out using the locally self consistent Green's function approach.

Results from the calculations clearly shows that the core-level shift distributions characteristic is Gaussian, but the components reveals a substantial difference in the FWHM (Full-Width at Half-Maximum). Comparison between the experimental and the calculated broadening shows a remarkable agreement.

Abstract Failures caused by threshold voltage (Vt) shifts in sub-100nm technology transistors have become very difficult to both analyze and determine the failure mechanism. The failure mechanisms for Vt shifts are typically non-visible for traditional physical analysis methods such as SEM inspection or traditional TEM analysis. This paper demonstrates how nano-probing was used to carefully and fully characterize the Vt shift failure to determine a specific electrical signature for a specific failure mechanism and then with junction stain Transmission Electronic Microscopy (TEM) verify the subtle doping defect affecting the Static Random Access Memory function in the 65nm generation node. Device failure due to a lack of Lightly Dope Drain (LDD) implant induced by an inconspicuous spacer defect was determined to be the root cause of the failure.

We study the sensitivity of the formation and the evolution of large-scale coherent structures in spatially developing plane mixing layers to uncertainties in the inflow forcing phase shifts. Instead of examining the mixing layer growth at discrete phase values, a complete response is determined by treating the phase shift as periodic and uniformly distributed random variables. The Fourier Chaos expansion (FCE) is used to decompose the stochastic solution in the abstract random space and the coefficients are determined by the discrete Fourier transformation (DFT). The statistical moments and quantiles of pertinent physical measures were determined. In the bimodal perturbation case, the vortex interactions are sensitive to only a small range of phase differences where large downstream variations in mixing layer growths are observed. In the tri–modal perturbation case, mixing layer growth is especially sensitive to the phase difference between the fundamental and the subharmonic modes immediately downstream from the inlet. Near the downstream location with subharmonic vortices roll up, an increase of the influence of the phase difference between the subharmonic modes can be observed. In both cases, the stochastic phase differences between the perturbation modes are delayed further downstream in comparison to the stochastic perturbation magnitudes. Quantiles of discrete vortex pairing events and different mixing layer length scales are also estimated.

Abstract:
Between 1972 and 2014, in Northern Tamil Nadu (NTN), India, the Green Revolution (GR) in agriculture was studied through five rounds of village-level studies (VLS). Over the decades, the number of villages dwindled; from 11, rigorously and randomly selected (together with a ‘Slater’ village first studied in 1916), through to a set of three villages in a rural–urban complex around a market town, to one of the original eleven, in the fifth round. During the reorganisation of districts in 1989, the villages sited on the Coromandel plain shifted administratively from North Arcot, a vanguard GR district, to Tiruvannamalai, described then as relatively backward. A wide range of concepts, disciplines, scales, field methods and analytical approaches were deployed to address i) a common core of questions about the economic and social implications of technological change in agriculture and ii) sets of other timely questions about rural development, which changed as the project lengthened. Among the latter was poverty.

Abstract:
This report prepared for The Jim Henson Company shares findings of a field study examining the promise of the Splash and Bubbles for Parents app, a second-screen digital resource designed for parents and caregivers to support young children’s learning of ocean science. The study conducted in 2020 involved a two-group, quasi-experimental design in which family participants were randomly assigned to either the intervention condition (who watched the show and used the app) or the comparison condition (who watched the show but did not have access to the app). Findings from this study provided information about how the app supported families to talk about science together; what science concepts and practices children learned through engaging with the app and related science activities; and how families shifted their attitudes, beliefs, or practices around science and media. Another finding highlighted parents and caregivers’ need for support around ways to engage with and use the app given that this represents a new type of digital tool.
