Full textThe present work deals with the behavior of ancient railway sub-structure in France. A statistical study was firstly undertaken on problems occurred in the whole ancient French railway network. The analysis evidenced the particular importance of sub-grade quality for the performance of the sub-structure and the track geometry. Afterwards, an ancient railway line in the West of France was investigated. The analysis showed that the degradation speed of this line was correlated with different parameters such as the nature of sub-grades and the thickness of different layers. An increase trend of degradation speed with the increase in interlayer thickness was identified. The interlayer has a positive impact since it reduces the train-induced stress applied to the sub-grade. The hydro-mechanical behavior of interlayer soil under different conditions (water content, fines content, stress, number of cycles) was investigated. A set of triaxial tests and infiltration tests were performed for this purpose. By analyzing the shear strength properties, the permanent axial strain and the resilient modulus of interlayer soil, we found that the water content and the fines content must be considered together. Adding more fines into the interlayer presents a positive impact under unsaturated conditions thanks to the suction effect, but a negative impact under saturated conditions. The infiltration column tests with drying/wetting cycles showed that the hydraulic conductivity of interlayer soil is governed by fines fraction but did not change significantly with fines content. In order to study the mechanism of interlayer creation and mud pumping, a physical model of 550 mm inner diameter was developed. Soil samples representing the ancient French railway substructure with a ballast layer overlying an artificial silt layer (mixture of crushed sand and kaolin were tested. The effects of monotonic and cyclic loadings, water content and dry unit mass of sub-soil were investigated. It was found that the pore water pressure developed in the sub-soil and the sub-soil stiffness are the key factors for the migration of fine particles or the creation of interlayer/mud pumping. Water is the necessary condition, but it is the soil compressibility that governs the phenomenon to occur

Full textAs ferrovias são um dos principais meios de transporte responsáveis por garantir a mobilidade urbana de pessoas bem como, o escoamento de bens e produtos de um país. Mesmo com a queda no incentivo de sua utilização, as vias férreas experimentaram importantes transformações visando torná-las mais atrativas. No tocante ao transporte de pessoas, houve recentemente uma tendência no crescimento de sua utilização. Este aumento na procura origina maiores solicitações sujeitando as vias férreas a maiores taxas de degradação dos elementos/camadas constituintes e, consequentemente, maiores operações de manutenção. Até algum tempo, os estudos eram direcionados à modificação e entendimento dos componentes mais superficiais, contudo, muitos dos mecanismos de degradação das vias mais comuns, encontram-se associados ao comportamento do balastro e solo de fundação onde a via férrea encontra-se assente. A degradação associada a estes dois componentes impactam diretamente nos custos de manutenção e, em situações extremas, podem colocar em risco a integridade dos utilizadores. Sendo a geotecnia o ramo da engenharia civil incumbida por estudar o comportamento dos solos e rochas, esta assume um lugar relevante na tomada de decisões que busquem sanar/minimizar as degradações, promovendo e idealizando soluções que garantam o pleno funcionamento das vias férreas. Ademais, para implementação de uma ferrovia, muitas vezes, é necessário a realização de obras adjacentes de caráter maioritariamente geotécnico, como o caso dos aterros, escavações, e zonas de transição. É objeto de estudo desta dissertação, uma recolha bibliográfica visando a clarificação da real importância da geotecnia no âmbito ferroviário, relacionado os principais mecanismos de degradação do solo de fundação com a exploração de uma via férrea balastrada. Aprsentam-se os conceitos fundamentais para o entendimento do seu comportamento, avaliação da degradação no tempo, bem como algumas das soluções mais utilizadas na esfera ferroviária e geotécnica.
Railways are one of the main means of transportion responsible for ensuring the urban mobility of people as well as the flow of goods and products of a country. Even with the drop in the incentive for its use, the railways underwent important transformations aiming to make them more attractive. Concerning the transportation of people, recently, a trend in the growth of its use has been observed. This increase in interest originates greater demands, subjecting the railways to higher degradation rates of the constituent elements/layers and, consequently, greater maintenance operations. In recent past, studies aimed at modifying and understanding the most superficial components, however, many of the degradation mechanisms of the most common railway are associated with the behavior of ballast and foundation soil where the railroad is based. The degradation associated with these two components impact maintenance costs and, in extreme situations, can put users' integrity at risk. As geotechnics is the branch of civil engineering charged with studying the behavior of soils and rocks, it assumes a relevant place in decision-making that seeks to remedy / minimize degradation, promoting and idealizing solutions that guarantee the full functioning of the railways. Also, for the implementation of a railway, it is often necessary to carry out adjacent works of a mostly geotechnical character, such as landfills, excavations, and transition zones. The object of study of this dissertation is a bibliographic collection aimed at clarifying the real importance of geotechnics in the railway sphere, related to the main mechanisms of degradation of the foundation soil with the exploration of a ballasted railroad. Fundamental concepts are presented for understanding their behavior, assessing degradation in time, as well as some of the most used solutions in the railway and geotechnical sphere.
