Abstract:
Railroads have been an inevitable part of countries’ expansionist and imperialist policies throughout history. Easing commodity distribution as well as human mobility, railroads also provided the transfer of knowledge and became a means of intelligence sharing. In this view, one can plausibly observe that nations are inclined to allocate budgets for railroad construction in order to extend their power. Moreover, they also followed expansionist policies by constructing ‘transitive’ railroads, connecting extensive regions, or even continents. Hence, investigating railroads sheds light on world history, for it enables one to comprehend the ultimate motives countries had before embarking upon such endeavors. The present research, therefore, analyzes railroad construction, focusing on the nineteenth century. It commences by introducing a brief history of the railroad construction around the globe. Then, it moves on to the Great Game theory and analyzes how the rivalry between the British and Russian Empires increased the speed of constructions with imperialist and expansionist policies behind them. This research also elucidates what impacts railroads built by the Russian Empire had on the Empire of Japan, and how it led to the escalation of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5. Moreover, it focuses on the conflicts taking place between the Russian Empire and the United States, in connection to their impacts on the British Empire. In conclusion, the paper demonstrates a trend of how railroads shaped world history, taking into account the example of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5.

Abstract:
The evaluation of the parameters of multi-layered foundations (railroad basis, foundations of railway structures, etc.) plays an important role in ensuring the safe movement of trains. The method of estimating the mechanical and geometric parameters of such foundations based on the solutions of inverse problems for multi-layered elastic packets is proposed. As input data for such problems the measured displacements of certain points on the package surface are used. The method allows estimating the parameters of the a priori distribution of unknown variable parameters, identifying and excluding outliers of the measured data from the created model, and constructing a posteriori estimation of the unknown parameters probability density with acceptable resolution. Proposed method can be used to create a new generation of equipment intended for non-destructive monitoring and estimating of the condition of the railroad basis and the foundations of artificial structures. The appropriate software of such vehicles based on the developed methods of data processing can be developed. The use of such equipment allows to operatively analyzing the state of individual areas of the railroad to decide on the need of repairing or replacing the railroad base or foundation of other elements of railroad infrastructure.

Abstract:
Infrastructure construction is often associated with excessive, even corrupt, profits. This article argues that construction profits earned in Spanish railroads in the mid-nineteenth century were a response to the lack of credibility of the Spanish state. It also makes the first attempt to document excess construction profits in Spanish railroads by demonstrating, for example, financial links between railroad stockholders and the providers of construction goods and services and by directly estimating construction profits. The estimated excess construction profits only provided railroad entrepreneurs with a normal rate of return to their entire railroad-related investments.

The creation of the cascade of hydroelectric power stations in Dnepr-river channel was accompanied by creation of artificial water basins. Change of hydro-geological conditions has resulted in flooding of adjoining territories and necessity of maintenance of the operational suitability of buildings and constructions located on them. The results of works on restoration of automobile overbridge above railroad tracks with intensive movement of trains in the city of Nikopollocated on the coast ofKakhovskoewater basin are presented. During operation more than 40 years, the inadmissible deformations in the above-ground overbridge constructions, caused by non-uniform settlements of foundations of supports, have taken place. The non-uniformity of foundations settlements has achieved600 mm.The foundations settlements were due to the changes of physical-and-mechanical characteristics of loessial soil of foundation owing to heaving of the underground water level.

Objective: To analyze calculation and construction peculiarities of bridgework at high-speed networks (VSM). Methods: Mathematical simulation, as well as numerical and analytical methods of structural engineering was applied. Results: The main peculiarities of bridge construction at high-speed networks (VSM) were analyzed in the given study. It was proved that artificial constructions at VSM operate in the conditions which differ considerably from the conditions at common railroad lines. The former include the need in continuous welded rail design along the whole length of a bridge, requirement for high stiffness of a structure; consideration of aerodynamic influence of a rolling stock, moving with high speed, on structures, consideration of “train-bridge” system’s elements interaction in order to identify resonant modes of train operation, which result in increased dynamic impact on a bridge, railway vehicles, etc. Calculation results of a “bridge- continuous welded rail” system interaction under temperature and train influence for specific types of bridgeworks multi-span beam discontinuous and continuous elevated structures were presented in the article. The influence of length, flow diagram and longitudinal stiffness of intermediate structures on force value, occurring in the rails of a rolling stock was stated. Practical importance: The description of some peculiarities of train operation at VSM bridges, which are to be considered during design engineering, were presented as well as certain measures, providing operation security and comfort of train passengers, were suggested.

Abstract:
Abstract. When designing bridges on motorways and railways, conventional beam or trussed design schemes of structures made of steel or reinforced concrete are used, but at present there is a significant increase in the speeds of motion of individual vehicles, axial loads and total train weight increase, and temporary intervals between trains. These factors lead to a significant increase in dynamic effects and necessitate the use of non-classical design schemes for artificial structures of transport infrastructure. In this study, it is proposed to take a threespan arch bridge with suspended central span structure as the basis for unified bridge overpass. Such an arrangement will allow changing the design length of the central span in a fairly wide range, reducing the total number of supports with an increase in the total length of the bridge overpass, and using a similar design as a double-track railroad, two- or four-lane motorway bridge. Calculations carried out and the results obtained for calculating displacements, internal forces and stresses in the units and elements of the proposed bridge overpass design allow concluding about the allowable limit values of the values found, sufficiently uniform load of all its main elements, the absence of strongly marked large-scale stress concentrators. Proposed design allows setting different sizes of spans during the design, reducing the number or even avoiding the installation of channel supports, adapting this structure for the passage of both rail and road transport. Design of the bridge, mathematical model of which is described in detail in the article, can be manufactured at the factory, and then delivered to the installation site and mounted there, which significantly reduces the final construction cost and makes it a profitable solution, for example, for arranging railway interchanges at different levels.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to valuate flexibilities in a large-scale railroad construction project. In general, a railroad construction project involves a large amount of flexibilities due to its long construction period and conflicts among various participants. Therefore, railroad construction projects require investors to examine the feasibility of the project, taking into account managers' ability to make strategic decisions to deal with flexibilities during the construction. However. this important value is not considered in conventional valuation methods, such as Net Present Value (NPV) or Internal Rate of Return (IRR) analysis. This study introduces methods to identify and valuate the flexibilities involved in a project. Decision Tree Analysis (DTA) and Real Option Analysis (ROA) are mainly discussed as primary methods to avoid pitfalls of the conventional valuation methods. DTA helps managers to make future decisions in an effective way by providing graphical diagrams of decision opportunities. ROA appraises the value of mitigating risks by allowing managers to defer investing decisions until a situation that affects a project's success seriously becomes obvious. As a case study, the additional station construction projects in Incheon International Airport Railroad (IIAR) are analyzed to apply the methodologies to valuate the flexibilities. The case study shows that the use of DTA and ROA enables us to visualize the risks, and to quantify the value of flexibilities in the project.

Abstract:
The environmental impact of transportation construction, operation and maintenance is of critical importance. Therefore it is vital to carry out a groundwater vulnerability assessment for transportation projects at an early stage. The objective of the study was to apply a methodology for groundwater vulnerability assessment for transportation planning in order to identify and avoid areas susceptible to contamination. In this study a spatial multi criteria analysis (SMCA) was conducted where the impacts of railroads on groundwater were examined. Physical factors that influence the groundwater vulnerability such as infiltration capacity, hydraulic conductivity, effective porosity, slope, land cover, depth to groundwater and topographic wetness index (TWI) were considered in this study. Results from the study show that about 30% of the total area was prone to high and very high groundwater vulnerability. The final vulnerability map illustrated the highly vulnerable areas in the sand deposits and till and less vulnerable areas of rock outcrops and clay deposits. According to the outcome of the sensitivity analysis the methodology used in this study shows promising results and can be employed further with some improvements.

Abstract: The heavy haul lines objective is to carry elevated freight, maintaining speeds that assure a shorter travel time. It must be done safely and, for this, it is required good conditions for the track. This Brazilian railway structure is designed to support 32 tonnes per axle, however to promote a better flow and to become more efficient there is an intention of change this freight to 40 tonnes per axle. Based on that, the aim of this study was to analyze a suitable technical solution t for 40 t/ axle load. Two situations have been evaluated: in one of them it was used a ballast layer over the formation; and in the other one it was adopted a concrete slab between the ballast layer and the formation. For the first situation stresses on rail and formation were calculated based on the theoretical models (Zimmermann and Eisenmann methods), and for the second one, a structure similar to a concrete pavement has been designed (ABCP industrial floor method). For both cases, the tresses on the track have been verified by the computational program FERROVIA. The conclusions were based on comparisons between the stresses values calculated by the theoretical and computational methods

Abstract:
The development of the large corporate railroad systems in the Midwest, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, produced many high quality, architecturally significant railroad stations. Among these, Richmond's Pennsylvania Railroad Station, built to the designs of the D.H. Burnham & Co., of Chicago in 1902-1903, is a fine example of the Beaux-Arts and Neo-Classical Revival Styles of architecture popular after the Columbian World Exposition of 1893. The Richmond station remains as the last example of the Burnham Co.'s railroad station work in Indiana. This thesis will review the history and current status of the station, review and summarize the field of railroad station reuse, and present an adaptive reuse plan for the station.

Floodplain roads and railroads are common features in river landscapes, but their distribution and impacts have not been explicitly studied. This dissertation discusses the impacts of floodplain roads and railroads on channel and floodplain processes in river landscapes at the continental, regional, and local scales. At the continental scale, I documented the spatial patterns of roads and railroads in the floodplains of the continental United States and the regional variability of their potential impacts. Based on these results, I developed a conceptual model based on topography and the interaction of transportation and stream networks that suggests that the area of lateral disconnection caused by transportation infrastructure should be most extensive in mid-sized alluvial valleys in relatively rugged settings, such as those located in the western United States. I used pre-existing digital geologic, hydrologic, and transportation data with Geographic Information Systems software to map floodplain areas and lateral disconnection along the floodplains of two river systems in Washington State. I developed methods to quickly and inexpensively delineate potential or historic floodplain surfaces, to analyze lateral floodplain disconnection caused by different types of structure, and to rank floodplain reaches in terms of salmon habitat potential. Although all floodplains exhibited disconnection, the floodplain maps and habitat rankings helped identify opportunities for habitat preservation and restoration. At the local scale, I mapped and measured the impacts of lateral disconnection, showing that channel and riparian habitat was degraded in locations with floodplain transportation infrastructure confining the channel compared with similar nearby sites lacking such confinement. Railroad grades and road beds function as confining structures in the riparian zone, disrupting flood pulses and the exchange of water, sediment, and biota between channels and their floodplains and within the floodplain. Over longer time periods, these structures can also impede the natural meandering and migration of channels across their floodplains, disrupting the erosional and depositional processes that drive the high habitat and biological diversity characteristic of floodplains. My results show that human-caused disconnections need to be further incorporated into river science and management. This dissertation includes previously published and unpublished co-authored material.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Business Administration in Project Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2019.
This study focussed on the evaluation of quality management at one of the selected South African freight rail construction projects. Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) was selected for its high rate of accidents and injuries that happen on daily basis which affect the company’s operations and profits. The study’s approach was to obtain as much as possible opinions from local and international experts on quality management in construction projects. The opinions were gathered through a number of official journals on the best practices for quality management, comparing all of these practices to that of TFR in order to conclude whether the need for improvement or the change in practicing quality is required. The mixed − method approach was employed, to gather more and accurate data. The strengths of qualitative research approach can make up for the weaknesses of the quantitative research approach, this was the reason why mixed − method was chosen. The targeted population of this study included the internal stakeholders such as quality assurance officers, project managers, project coordinators and project team members. This targeted population was able to provide the accurate information as they are directly involved in the execution of the projects in terms of quality management of the project. A questionnaire was developed and employed as a tool to gather data to satisfy the research questions. This study was a case study because it only focused on TFR Iron Ore line projects. The focus was that, within TFR Iron Ore line, only those who are affected directly by the above mentioned projects were interviewed. The study has revealed that the Total Quality Assurance measures are being ignored at TFR, such as unscheduled quality tours, quality audits, quality control routines, random sampling of errors and record seen defects, and quality monitoring throughout the project life cycle.

Abstract:
AbstractIn order to solve the problems of narrow roads, difficult construction, long construction period and high impact on the surrounding environment encountered during the construction of mountainous highways, railroads and other infrastructures, this paper proposes an assembled overhang composite roadbed structure. The mechanical analysis of the assembled overhang is carried out, and the three-dimensional finite element numerical model of the assembled roadbed structure is established, and the force characteristics of the overhang structure are analyzed. The results show that there is stress concentration between the two spans of the road panel, and the deformation of the road panel is mainly concentrated in the overhang side, and the deformation of the side span is larger than that of the middle span. The stress concentration phenomenon appeared on the outer side of the connection end of the middle overhanging and column, and the horizontal displacement of the middle column was larger, and the displacement was about twice that of the edge column. The research results can provide useful guidance for the design and optimization of assembled overhanging roadbeds.

Abstract:
Not populated or low-populated territories development due to the railroads construction exerted considerable impact on regional planning of the country. Construction of the Great Siberian way – the Trans-Siberian Railway was one of the significant events of the end of the 19th century. Numerous new settlements and the cities, such as Novosobirsk, Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk appeared on the map of the country. Krasnoyarsk began to develop violently and grew by 270% after railroad construction in 1897 - 1911 years. New created structure of resettlement entailed industry development. A lot of the new productions were transported from the central part of the country during the Second World War. Factories were accommodated along the railroad generally. The majority of objects of cultural railway heritage remained on the railroads territories in present time. The pioneer settlement of railroad workers in the city of Krasnoyarsk – is the Nikolaevskaya sloboda escaped. Typically Siberian residential buildings and style life still characteristic for that unique area. The strategies of the renovation of the area Nikolaevskaya sloboda oriented toward the tourist quarter of the Siberian city is required. Development of the city continues. Krasnoyarsk, thanks to the railroad, became the million plus city. Light rail transport, rewatching municipal warehouse territories under cultural clusters, business and residential districts is supposed in the future. Development process is oriented to transformation of the transport oriented district (TOD).

Abstract:
Due to its great geological and transport position, Croatia is part of important international transport corridors and was included in the Trans-European Transport Network when it joined the European Union. The fact that Gradec - Sveti Ivan Žabno section is the first completed new line in Croatia after 50 years shows how much the railroads in Croatia need revitalization in order to increase railroad capacity, speed and safety level. The next ten years will be marked by investments in rail infrastructure projects worth an estimated 4.4 billion. Due to the large infrastructure projects, such as the investments in the RH1 and RH2 railroad corridors, designers are facing major challenges that require faster, more efficient and accurate planning and successful cooperation between all parties involved in the planning process and construction. BIM (Building Information Modelling) has emerged as an important tool for creating and modifying digital and graphical data in the design, planning and construction phases of a project. This article will present the railroad as an important subject in the demographic and economic development of Croatia and the application of BIM technology in the design of railroad infrastructure in Croatia. Also, through available literature about BIM technology in railroad infrastructure in the world, the article will give an overview of the practical part of the implementation using the AutoCAD Civil 3D platform. The Križevci-Koprivnica detailed design and Škrljevo-Rijeka-Jurdani main design, which poses numerous challenges to designers due to its complexity, will serve as an example, illustrating the advantages and disadvantages of using Civil 3D and Subassembly Composer. The article examines the legal regulations for the application of BIM technology in the European Union and what can be expected from Croatia in terms of its integration in the future.

Full text
Abstract:
This report presents a case study for constructing aggregate subgrade improvement (ASI) layers using quarry by-product aggregates (QBA), a quarry mix of large primary crushed rocks (PCR) and sand-sized quarry fines. The construction took place at Larry Power Road in Bourbonnais Township in Kankakee County, Illinois, where the Illinois Department of Transportation placed two QBA mixes. The first mix (QBA_M1) consisted of 45% quarry by-products and 55% railroad ballast–sized 3×1 PCR. The second mix (QBA_M2) consisted of 31% and 69% quarry by-products and PCR, respectively. Two conventional ASI sections were also constructed conforming to Illinois Department of Transportation’s CS02 gradation. All sections consisted of a 9 in. (229 mm) QBA/PCR layer topped with a 3 in. (76 mm) dense-graded capping layer. Laboratory studies preceded the construction to recommend optimum quarry by-product content in the QBA materials and construction practice. The Illinois Center for Transportation research team monitored the quality and uniformity of the construction using nondestructive testing techniques such as dynamic cone penetrometer, lightweight deflectometer, and falling weight deflectometer. The segregation potential was monitored by visual inspection and imaging-based techniques. Short-term field evaluation of the constructed QBA layers, particularly QBA_M2 with a 31% quarry by-product content, showed no evidence of abnormal segregation and did not jeopardize the structural integrity of the QBA ASI layers, which had slightly lower but comparable strength and stiffness profiles to the conventional ASI sections. The use of QBA materials in ASI was field validated as a sustainable construction practice to provide stable pavement foundation layers.

Full text
Abstract:
Following the construction of the railroad causeway in 1959, a perennial halite (NaCl) bottom crust has been known to exist in the north arm (Gunnison Bay) of Great Salt Lake, Utah, but the lake conditions controlling accumulation or dissolution of the crust are not well defined, including how depth-controlled chemodynamic and hydrodynamic factors influence the degree of the halite saturation. Immediately prior to the opening of a new bridge in the causeway in early December 2016 when north arm lake elevation was at a historical low (just above 4189 feet), the north arm lake brine was at halite saturation. After the opening, inflow of less saline south arm water mixed with north arm water, raised lake elevation, and diluted the north arm lake brine to undersaturation with respect to halite. The following five years have resulted in annual and seasonal fluctuations of halite saturation states. Beginning in mid-2019, the Utah Geological Survey began a study of the north arm to better understand and document the transitions of halite saturation state following the bridge opening using newly collected data as well as reviewing available past data.
