Abstract:
Capturing Believers provides a history of the reception of American conservative evangelical missionary broadcasting from its inception in 1931 through the rise of the commercial era in 1970. The dissertation narrates accounts of two major Protestant stations, HCJB and ELWA, located in Ecuador and Liberia, respectively, as well as the U.S.-based project to build a custom transistor radio for the mission field. Employing a case-study approach, the thesis demonstrates the innovativeness of religious broadcasters who formulated a range of pragmatic responses to the drastic shortage of receiving sets in the southern hemisphere, including the use of social convention and the development of pretuned receiver technology. Missionary stations imported not only radios, but a constellation of American values into host countries through their reception activities. Overall, officials employed creative methods to construct a particular type of listener experience known as radio capture, characterized by regular listening in a domestic setting. By penetrating into the home or village and exposing listeners to proprietary broadcasts on a continual, even daily, basis, missionary receiver programs legitimized American conservative evangelicalism abroad and sowed seeds for a widespread revival of Protestantism in Latin America and Africa after 1970.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a solution to the problem of receiving a signal in the shadow and fringe areas. Theoretical and experimental investigation of the field behind an obstacle in a line of sight transmission path for UHF / microwave signals has resulted in a new approach to the analysis of electromagnetic fields in the shadow of an obstacle. Analysis using this approach showed the field to consist of varying amplitude and phase distribution. Additional analysis predicted an increase in received signal could be achieved if correlation between the field and antenna structure could be obtained. This was accomplished with a new antenna design. The thesis presents experimental and photographic evidence to support the theory. A novel technique involving the matching of the antenna structure to the field distribution, resulted in an increase of received signal in the diffracted field of up to 4 dB.

Abstract:

Portable communication systems require, in part, high-efficiency radio frequency power amplifiers (RF PA) if battery lifetime is to be conserved. Conventional amplifier classifications and definitions are presented in a unified and concise format. The Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) and Metal-Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MESFET) are evaluated as active devices in high-efficiency RF PA designs. Two amplifier classes (class CE and class F) meet the system requirements of an 850 MHz operating frequency, a power output of 3 W, a battery supply voltage of 9 Vdc, and a sinusoidal-type signal to be amplified. Both classes are evaluated through recent research literature and simulated using the PSpice® computer simulation program. Class CE and class F are found to provide efficiencies exceeding 80 percent under the given system constraints.Master of Science

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The preliminary development of a FM radio receiver module is discussed. An existing narrowband system operating between 48MHz and 50MHz will be replaced. Digital components were investigated, compared and used with analogue techniques to build a more flexible two-way radio receiver system. A direct digital synthesizer was considered as a replacement for the current synthesized phased lock loop local oscillator and much attention was given to the local oscillator and mixer design, characteristics and measurement procedures. A detailed study of receiver systems was undertaken to determine the specifications needed for every receiver component to achieve satisfactory receiver performance in the end. Receiver characteristics as well as receiver measurement procedures are defined. A software tool was developed to aid the design process, establishing computationally whether the receiver specifications are met prior to the final design. The complete design process, from fundamental specifications through to the developed final receiver module is discussed. A modular design approach was used to guarantee easy manufacturing, substitution and testing. This approach comprises the break-down of the receiver into well defined components that are each matched to 50O. The separate components of the system were designed, measured and characterized to make it possible to replace only a single component instead of the entire system when a part becomes redundant.

Abstract:
As a key step toward a smart society, apart from the Human-to-Human (H2H) communication, the future wireless networks, are expected to accommodate Machine-to-Machine Communication (also known as Machine Type Communication (MTC)). The latter is a new communication paradigm in which the devices can talk with each other without or with little human intervention. With the rapid proliferation of M2M applications, a huge number of devices will be deployed in many types of use cases such as smart metering, industry automation, e-health, etc. However, the current wireless networks are still not ready to hold traffic from MTC. The reason is twofold. First, the evolution of the wireless network seeks for higher throughput and lower latency. Second, the special features that MTC exhibits, such as huge number of deployed devices, small payload but frequent transmission, adverse installation location, etc., lead to that the requirements by H2H are no longer required by most of M2M use cases. From the state-of-the-art work, we find that two possible research orientations to efficiently handle M2M traffic: Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) and adaption of the existing cellular networks. For both of them, the radio access mechanisms, used in Radio Access Network (RAN), is vitally important to make MTC a promising technology. From this view, radio access mechanism is the main focus of our studies. In this thesis, we present the contributions covering the aforementioned aspects: performance evaluation of ALOHA-based LPWAN networks, and a polling service that is an extension to RAN of LTE networks for periodic M2M traffic. The contributions of this thesis are summarized on the following axis: We make a survey about the energy efficiency related studies in the literatures. The main contribution in this survey is to review, classify the existing research works into different categories, and compare the pros and cons between categories. We also review the advances of the LPWAN related study. We study the impact of transmit power level diversity and imperfect power control to the slotted ALOHA based LPWAN systems. Some insightful design guidelines are obtained by manipulating the established analytical model. We study the performance of LPWAN system with macro reception diversity. By stochastic geometry, we get simple closed-form formulas for the packet loss rate and spatial throughput, which were unknown before. These formulas are very useful to analyze LPWAN networks (especially in urban areas) and to quantify the system capacity gain. By gathering several available results about the analysis of non slotted ALOHA, we finally get a synthesis framework to study the RAN of LPWAN. In terms of adaptations to RAN of LTE networks, we first analyze the conventional random access mechanism in LTE and identify the existing inefficiencies. We then propose a multiple period polling service for periodic M2M use cases. The proposed service is compared with conventional random access mechanism in LTE in a fluid model. The numerical results show that the proposed service dramatically reduces the consumption of system resources such as Radio Network Temporary Identifier (RNTI), Resource Block (RB) and has a higher energy efficiency due to the avoidance of random access procedure and related signaling messages

Abstract:
The Global System for Mobile communications (GSM), which covers 54% of the world's mobile market, evolved into the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). The thesis addresses interference suppression using new radio frequency (RF) and microwave design methods for GSM and GPRS. The overall outcome is interference reduction and enhanced network capacity, leading to superior quality of service (QoS) for wider area coverage. The main results can be summarized as follows * Design, manufacturing and characterisation measurements of new compact filters for GSM and GPRS base stations in order to reduce the out-of-band interference. It is shown that filters with novel microstrip resonators - dual mode filters and cross coupled filters - provide both a high degree of miniaturisation and narrow bandwidth. * Development of a new 3-D Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) design method for new microstrip filters. A non-homogeneous Perfectly Matched Layer (NH-PML) was implemented for Absorbing Boundary Conditions (ABC) to increase the accuracy of the FDTD method. Signal estimation techniques were developed to speed up FDTD computations. A novel design method based on neural networks (NN) and FDTD was implemented to reduce the total design time. * Investigation of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) thin film resonators and antennas at microwave frequencies. High Q-factor HTS devices considerably enhance both the front-ends sensitivity and selectivity of wireless receivers. * Design, manufacturing and testing of radio frequency (RF) electronics for 16 elements GSM and GPRS Smart Antenna for multipath fading mitigation and for in-band interference including co-channel interference (CCI) suppression.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this thesis was to investigate the use of behavioral level models in receiver simulations using the capabilities of Agilent's Advanced Design System. Behavioral level modeling has become increasingly attractive because it offers faster and easier results for system level simulations. The work in this thesis focused strongly on nonlinear measurements to characterize the various nonlinear phenomena that are present in amplifiers and mixers. Measurement automation software was developed to automate the process. An error correction technique was also developed to increase the accuracy of spectrum analyzer measurements. The measured data was used to implement the behavioral level amplifier and mixer models in ADS. The accuracy of the models was compared to measured data and the different available models were compared. Finally the models were combined to realize different receivers and were used to do typical receiver tests. These test include gain and gain compression, two-tone intermodulation and spurious responses. The results are compared to measured data to test the accuracy and usefulness of the models and simulation techniques.

Abstract:
An extensive radio wave propagation measurement campaign was conducted at 1.3 GHz and 4.0 GHz inside four buildings, including a sports arena, a modern closed-plan office building, and two dissimilar, open-plan factories. Measurements were recorded at 57 locations using base station antenna heights of 1.7 meters and 4.0 meters. Results were obtained for mean and maximum excess delay, rms delay spread, time delay jitter, differential delay jitter, and path loss through analyses of impulse response estimates, which were obtained via repetitive 5 ns probing pulses. The effects of frequency, antenna height, topography (line-of-sight or obstructed direct path), and building environment on delay spread and path loss are quantified. Results indicate that, on average, the frequencies and antenna heights used in this study have minimal impact on rms delay spread and path loss. However, topography and building environment significantly affect these parameters. RMS delay spread values as high as 230 ns were observed in open plan factories. Computed path loss power law exponents are 1.84 and 2.35 for line-of-sight and obstructed topographies, respectively. A second campaign was conducted to determine the effects of antenna directivity and polarization on propagation parameters. On average, line-of-sight indoor channels offer 8 dB of cross-polarization discrimination, whereas obstructed environments offer less than 3 dB. Directional antennas provide a significant reduction in rms delay spread over omni-directional antennas. In line-of-sight environments, circular polarization provides an additional delay spread reduction.

Abstract:
In this essay a pilot study on the memory of Swedish Public Service radio news is presented. 30 subjects participated in the study, which was performed during three days, 18 to 20 of November 2013. The material which formed the basis for the study consisted three newscasts of Sweden's most popular radio newscast ”Dagens eko”, which is broadcasted live at 16.45 every day in the Public Service channels SR P1 and SR P4. The subjects listened to the broadcasts each day, and their memory of them was tested the day after each broadcast. The aim of the thesis is to find out which properties of the audience that affect how much – and what parts – of a newscast that the audience remember. The properties the study has examined are gender, age, domicile and which other news media the study participants used during each day of the study. The aim of this paper is also to show which properties of the newscasts, and the news stories which they contain, that affect how much and what parts of the newscast the audience remember. No general conclusions can be drawn from the results presented in this paper as it is a pilot study with a limited material. The results presented apply only to the selected subjects in the selected three days. In this pilot study women remembered more news stories from the newscasts than men, listeners older than 50 years remembered more news stories from the newscasts than listeners younger than 50 years and listeners who consumed many other traditional news media during the pilot study remembered more from the newscasts than listeners who did not. Domicile does, according to the results of this pilot studie, not affect the remembrance of a newscast. It was also found that there were large differences regarding how well the different news stories were remembered. Some of the news stories were remembered by almost all subjects, while others were forgotten by the same number. The pilot study suggests that characteristics that increase the remembrance of a novelty are that the news story is a national news story, that it is mentioned in the introductory presentation of the broadcast, that it is presented as one of the three or four first news or at the very end of the broadcast, that it contain at least one interview or a speaker and that it is considered to be sensational. The pilot study also suggests that information about the actors and locations in a news story gets better remembered than information about what the news event actually was, why the news event occurred or what affect it will get.

This paper discusses one approach to determine a characteristic of West - Java's air and ground segment as a block-box to accomodate radio waves propagation, especially in L-band ranges, by evaluating both the topographical data and radio reception pattern as measured from ground based telemetry receiving-end system. All the measured signals are random and assumed to be stationair and ergodic. In order to characterize the channel for polarization diversity reception, some statistical analysis are applied to the signal strength measured of both - RHCP and LHCP components of 1531 MHz propagated waves as transmitted fr om NC212-200 PK-NZJ-aircraft. Some computer calculated correlograms of measured data are shown herewith, it is focused for a certain radio corridor at radial 265E relative to the ground based receiving antenna. More over some curves of predicted multipath gain factor are also presented to gain more theoretical back ground. Abstract:
Cognitive radios have been proposed as a new technology to counteract the spectrum scarcity issue and increase the spectral efficiency. In cognitive radios, the sparse assigned frequency bands are opened to secondary users, provided that interference induced on the primary licensees is negligible. Cognitive radios are established in two steps: the radios firstly sense the available frequency bands by detecting the presence of primary users and secondly communicate using the bands that have been identified as not in use by the primary users.

In this thesis we investigate how to improve the efficiency of cognitive radio networks when multiple cognitive radios cooperate to sense the spectrum or control their interferences. A major challenge in the design of cooperating devices lays in the need for exchange of information between these devices. Therefore, in this thesis we identify three specific types of control information exchange whose efficiency can be improved. Specifically, we first study how cognitive radios can efficiently exchange sensing information with a coordinator node when the reporting channels are noisy. Then, we propose distributed learning algorithms allowing to allocate the primary network sensing times and the secondary transmission powers within the secondary network. Both distributed allocation algorithms minimize the need for information exchange compared to centralized allocation algorithms.

Tsarwe, Stanley Zvinaiye. ""Too tired to speak?": investigating the reception of Radio Grahamstown's Lunchtime Live show as a means of linking local communities to power." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002943.

Abstract:
This study sets out to investigate Lunchtime Live, a twice-weekly, one-hour long current affairs show broadcast on a small community radio station, Radio Grahamstown, to understand its role in the local public sphere, and its value in helping civil society’s understanding of and involvement in the power structures and political activities in Grahamstown. Lunchtime Live seeks to cultivate a collective identity and promote public participation in the public affairs of Grahamstown. As a key avenue of investigation, this study seeks to test theory against practice, by evaluating Lunchtime Live’s aspirations against the audiences’ perception of it. This investigation uses qualitative content analysis of selected episodes of recorded transcripts of the shows that aired between August 2010 and March 2011, together with the audiences’ verbalised experiences of this programme through focus group discussions. The study principally uses qualitative research informed by reception theory. The research reveals three key findings. First, that resonance rather than resistance is the more dominant ‘stance’ or ‘attitude’ towards the content of Lunchtime Live. Residents interviewed agreed that the programme is able to give a “realistic” representation of their worldview, and thus is able to articulate issues that affect their lives. Second, that whilst the programme is helping establish links between members of the civil society as well as between civil society and their political representatives, residents feel that local democracy is failing to bring qualitative improvements to their everyday lives and that more ‘participation’ is unlikely to change this. Most respondents blame this on a lack of political will, incompetence, corruption and populist rhetoric by politicians who fail to deliver on the mantra of ‘a better life for all’ in the socioeconomic sphere. The study finds a scepticism and even cynicism that participatory media seems to be able to do little to dilute. Thirdly, in spite of the largely positive view about Lunchtime Live’s capacity to be a platform for public engagement, its participatory potential is structurally constrained by the material privations of most of its listeners. Given that in order to participate in talk shows and discussions audience members have to phone in, economic deprivation often precludes this. It is clear from this research that despite shows such as Lunchtime Live that are exploring new techniques of popular involvement, the voice of the ordinary people still struggles to be heard.

Dodd, Howard Mannin. "The Validity of Using a Geographic Information System's Viewshed Function as a Predictor for the Reception of Line-of-Sight Radio Waves." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35115.

Full text
Abstract:
A Geographic Information System (GIS) viewshed is the result of a function that determines, given a terrain model, which areas on a map can be seen from a given point(s), line or area. In the communications industry, this function has been used to model radio wave coverages and to site transceiver towers for cellular phones. However, there are errors involved with this function and, without the requisite data, it cannot account for building heights that may affect visibility in urban areas. This paper examines the ability to accurately show line-of-sight (LOS) radio wave coverages in order to establish the viability of replacing existing field methods with GIS viewshed analysis. An origin point capable of supporting a line-of-sight radio wave transmitter was chosen from within the Virginia Tech campus study area. A viewshed analysis was performed with ESRI's ArcView GIS, using this site as the observation point and a 30-meter resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) from the US Geological Survey. To check the accuracy of the viewshed, we transmitted at 27.5 GHz, a LOS frequency that has properties common in the wireless telecommunications industry. We also transmitted at 900 MHz from the same point to provide a comparison of the 27.5 GHz frequency to a non-line-of-sight radio wave. The data was recorded and then entered into the GIS where the visibility attribute of each point was compared to the viewshed's prediction of visibility. After this comparison, footprints and heights of campus buildings were included in the model, by adding them to the ground heights of the DEM. Another viewshed analysis was performed using the same origin site and the new building height DEM as the elevation grid. This second viewshed was compared with the recorded visibility attribute and signal strength data. The use of more complete surface data was shown to have a more positive correlation with the recorded data than the previous model. The comparison of these two viewsheds demonstrated how well the viewshed function can represent real-world visibility and showed that the accuracy of the viewshed function is dependent on the accuracy of the elevation model. The signal strength attribute enabled us to create a communications viewshed, or 'commshed'. The commshed consists of all data points that received a signal strong enough to carry data. The building viewshed and commshed were then compared to see to what degree the 27.5 GHz frequency deviates from true line-of-sight paths. There were slightly fewer points in the commshed than points 'in view' in the viewshed model due to the frequency's small wavelength and the lack of vegetation data in the elevation grid. However, when a power margin is added to the transmitter strength in order to overcome unpredictable conditions, the commshed's predictive accuracy increases as well. This means that for LOS radio systems running under normal operating conditions, the viewshed is an excellent predictor of receiving areas. A 900 MHz commshed was also created so that we could study the relationship between a line-of-sight radio wave and a wave that is not blocked by structures. This comparison showed that, as expected, a viewshed is a better predictor of LOS radio waves than non-LOS waves. The data sets and analysis presented here should help communications companies ascertain the best way to incorporate GIS and the viewshed function into their wave coverage mapping and tower siting processes.

Sahu, Biranchinath. "Integrated, Dynamically Adaptive Supplies for Linear RF Power Amplifiers in Portable Applications." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/7607.

Abstract:
Energy-efficient radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (PAs) are critical and paramount to achieve longer battery life in state-of-the-art portable systems because they typically determine and dominate the power consumption of such devices. In this dissertation, a high-efficiency, linear RF PA with a dynamically adaptive supply and bias current control for code division multiple access (CDMA) and wideband CDMA (WCDMA) is conceived, simulated, and experimentally demonstrated with a discrete PCB-level design and in integrated circuit (IC) form. The PA efficiency is improved by dynamically adjusting both its supply voltage and bias current, there by minimizing its quiescent power dissipation. The PA supply voltage is derived from the battery by a noninverting, synchronous buck-boost switching regulator because of its flexible functionality and high efficiency. Adjusting the PA supply voltage and bias current by tracking the output power, instead of following the complete envelope in large baseband bandwidth wireless applications, is achieved by a converter with a lower switching frequency and consequently higher light-load efficiency, which translates to prolonged battery life. A discrete PCB-level prototype of the proposed system with 915 MHz center frequency, CDMA IS-95 signal having 27-dBm peak-output power resulted in more than four times improvement in the average efficiency compared to a fixed-supply class-AB PA while meeting the required performance specifications. In the IC solution fabricated in AMIs 0.5-micron CMOS process through MOSIS, a dual-mode, buck-boost converter with pulse-width modulation (PWM) control for high power and pulse-frequency modulation (PFM) for low power is designed and implemented to improve the PA efficiency during active and standby operation, respectively. The performance of the dynamically adaptive supply and bias control IC was validated by realizing a 25-dBm, 1.96 GHz center frequency, WCDMA PA over an input supply range of 1.4 4.2 V. The PA with dual-mode power supply and bias control IC showed an average-efficiency improvement of seven times compared to a fixed-supply class-AB PA, which translates to five times improvement in battery life assuming the PA is active for 2 % of the total time and in standby mode otherwise.

This research reports the consolidation of the individual in the outskirts taking place, rising from the mediation of everyday life, culture, language and education. Starting from the analysis of two radio programs, Momento SaÃde (Health Moment) and ForÃa da Mulher SolidÃria (The strength of the Solidary Woman), presented by Edsonâ Queirozâs Community Radio station, in Dendà neighborhood, in Fortaleza, discursive sceneries are elaborated on which it can be identified how the individual from the outskirts emerges from the environment of the broadcasting station. Momento SaÃde, produced by students in Nursing School, takes on a one-way speech when dealing with health issues in the neighborhood; in its narrative, it allows a glimpse at the popular notions under which the academic knowledge still lies when related to health matters. The speech marks, in this case, allows the perception that in the studentsâ talks there is a lack of community voices, visible from the common listening by the Womenâs Group of the Solidary Socioeconomics that works in the neighborhood. This reception study, when identifying this silence, allows the organization of the program A ForÃa da Mulher SolidÃria, an experience carried out by the women, who, moving around these âbetween-placesâ, give up the role of listeners and take on the role of producers of speech and meanings about life in the neighborhood. The methodological procedures combine consultations to reference books on the topic, especially MartÃn-Barbero and field research, through interviews, observation and interventions that occurred with the womenâs program. The A ForÃa da Mulher SolidÃria experience shows that, enriching the political sphere in the culture that weaves everyday life, the outskirts individual rises.

Abstract:
Between 1945 and 1960, French poetry tended to re-explore its oral roots with radio and television broadcasting, recording and live performance. Theatres developed, aside from poetical performances, some attempts for staged poems. The “question of the book” in its relation to other media turned out to be central in the poetical imagination and debates of the time: some endeavoured to rethink the communication modes of poems, to open the poetical field to a wider public, to explore the possibilities offered by new recording and sound broadcasting techniques, others tried to use the media as a poetical performance space. This dissertation, which collects many written and audiovisual archives, surveys the oralisation of French poetry between 1945 and the 1960s and attempts to reassess, through the detailed study of diverse forms of “poems outside the book”, the importance and the role of those practices in twentieth century poetry history

Abstract:
This study examines the birth of television and the modern media corporation that launched it, through the archives of the designer of the "first" set, John Vassos, a Greek-born American industrial designer, interior decorator, and illustrator (1898-1985). Vassos's early career is used as a case study to analyze the historical and cultural forces that shaped the emergence of this new media and the new profession of industrial design, through archival materials housed in the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. and at Syracuse University. Specifically, this thesis unites various parts of Vassos's early career, from his modernist illustrations to industrial design, through the aesthetics and practices of modernism. As RCA's lead industrial designer for over 40 years, Vassos was involved in the design and promotion of RCA's electronic products, including radios and televisions and studio equipment. Vassos also designed the new spaces carved out for their use in the home including the "living room of the future" featured at the 1939 World's Fair. Drawing from his skills as an illustrator, designer and display expert, Vassos helped develop RCA's public image at a time of its greatest expansion in radio and television manufacturing and broadcasting. This reading of Vassos's work is both diachronic, taking into account his work over the early part of his career to analyze his specific contribution and synchronic, in relationship to other designers working contemporaneously. Thus, this thesis explores Vassos's double role as a participant, with active agency within the emergence of the new field and as a subject, constrained by social roles and forces. Ranging from turnstile to the transmitter, Vassos along with other industrial designers used the streamlined aesthetic to create visual unity among mechanical and electronic products, from home to office, from subway to skyline.

The research analyses the cultural consumption (particularly television and radio) of domestic workers in São Paulo (SP). Through mapping the cultural preferences of these women workers divided in three profiles, romantic, up to date and evangelic I raise reflections on the importance of these media among them. In parallel, through the analyses of domestic workers representations in television, in particular in the telenovela Cheias de Charme (Globo, 2012, 19h30), I discuss the transformations on the image of these workers in fiction and in real life exploring the passage from poor workers to class C consumers. In this context, issues such as domestic labor, gender, class, race, consumption and media are interrelated.

The research is a study about output and reception of the radio Heliópolis FM, by his public, Heliópolis s inhabitants. The objective was understand how radio is perceived by his public. The study was divide in two phases. The first is based in bibliographical research. In the following phase, rescues-itself the transcript of the sender and verifies-itself the appropriation of the Heliópolis FM by inhabitants and itself to communal paper perform sender, investigating itself as to radio is appropriated by his assiduous listeners. The approach to the reception was deed having for base the theoretical-methodological slope of the social use of the means, of Jesús Martín-Barbero. This kind of study consists of the displacement of the space of interest of the means for the place where is produced his sense social movements and, of a special way, of those that start from the neighborhood (1997). To technical it used was the interview is structured. I concluded that to radio is perceived as communal by his receivers mainly because opens space for the local population produce programs, choose the song that will be touched, present his works and utilize his service like the of location of persons and documents lost freely.(AU)

Abstract:
Aspiring to “give a voice” to the poor people of Pikine, a suburb of the Senegalese capital, “Local Debate” is an interactive political programme of the community radio Air’Jeunes, created in the late nineties at the initiative of youth associations in the Dakar region with support from a major Canadian NGO. This thesis explores the use of this programme by local citizens in three main areas where activists and proponents of participatory democracy are committed to developing citizen action mechanisms, aiming to correct the defects and shortcomings under the democratic ideal of representative government: the role of citizens in the production system of local public goods, symbolic relationships between elected leaders and electors, and the public space for debate on public policies and the actions of representatives. Based on an ethnographic field study conducted in three phases between 2006 and 2011 in the radio production studio and the show’s listening sites, it appears that, even if the programme has enabled forms of contestation of local authority to be voiced publicly without mediation, the realisation of the original project faced an unfavourable local context marked by the lack of resources given to local officials to exercise their newly decentralised powers and a local political journalism polarised around two dominant forms, leaving little room for debate: the antagonistic journalism of big private groups and small informal press, and the legitimising journalism of the public service group. Despite their militant commitment to the project, radio staff and hosts whose social origins and educational backgrounds distance them from the forms of consumption of information goods and activities of Pikine’s inhabitants, as well as the dynamic activities of informal neighbourhood associations in the suburbs of Dakar, have gradually yielded to forces of attraction exercised by mainstream private radios, influencing their vision of their professional future and, in turn, their journalistic practice

This dissertation discusses the communicational texture instituted between the comedic constructions of a radio program and the identitarian images of its audience. It analyzes the different social types and scenarios, humor strategies and relationships with listeners that are constructed in the radio comedy program called Top Show, broadcast by Rádio Peperi Top 104 FM, an FM radio station in São Miguel do Oeste, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, as well as the programs relations with the media-related context of reception. The dissertations goal is to investigate how that radio program includes in its comedic constructions symbolic elements that are present in the daily culture of its listeners and to understand how the meanings, appropriations, alliances and refusals of those constructions are constituted in the program?s reception. It also analyzes the discoursive construction of regional identities as expressed in the caricatural and parodistic elements that are presented in the program and the audiences symbolic operations. For the analysis of the areas of production/product/reception the author adopts a multi-methodological approach that covers these various dimensions of the communication process. The results show a blending of referents connected to the media-related experience and to the matrices of regional culture, such as accent, tradition, rural space and ethnic identities, which permeate the communicational devices that make up the radio program and establish reading alliances with the reception.

In Brazil, the broadcasting system for television content in high definition is the ISDB-Tb. Although robust, the content transmission in this system, like in any radio frequency propagation, can suffer from external attenuating factors, such as distortion by multipath propagation. One of the techniques used in radio communications for minimizing the effects of this type of distortion is the spatial diversity reception, which uses multiple antennas connected to a single receiver. The signals, received by different antennas, are combined, in a technique known as MRC or Maximal Ratio Combiner, so that the output signal-to-noise ratio is greater than the individual signal-to-noise ratios, allowing the successfully decoding of the received content, even though the individual signal in each antenna does not have sufficient quality to be decoded independently. This study aims to establish a method of spatial diversity in receiving television signals in ISDB-Tb, pondering between the advantages and disadvantages of their use in edge regions of coverage, where the reception of the Brazilian digital TV system is not yet total.

Abstract: The purpose of this work is to develop a radio receiver, which is suitable for application in wireless sensor networks. Among the essential requirements for one such radio are included low power, low cost and high sensitivity. The topology of a super-regenerative receiver to operate in 900MHz was chosen, since it complies with all these requirements in addition to being appropriate for integration. Samples of the developed radio receiver were fabricated in 0,35Km CMOS technology. Prototypes were assembled on alumina plate using a few additional external components as an alternative to evaluate the performance of the radio without being affected by the low quality of the passives L and C used in the tuning block (tank and matching circuit). Test results have shown that the developed receiver features sensitivity of -82 dBm for a bit error rate (BER) lower than 0,1% with an On-Off Keying modulated signal of 64 kbit/s. Measure power consumption has been 2,5 mW for a supply voltage of 2 V.

Abstract:
The sigma-1 receptor, although originally classified as an opioid receptor is now thought of as distinct receptor class, sharing no homology with any other known mammalian protein. The receptor has been implicated with a number of diseases including cancer and depression. Modulation of the receptors activity with agonists has potential antidepressant activity whereas antagonists lead to death of cancer cells. Using radioligand binding assays, utilizing the cancer cell line MDA-MB-468, which highly expresses the sigma-1 receptor, a series of novel specific, high affinity, sigma-1 receptor ligands have been characterised. These ligands differed from any previous sigma- 1 receptor ligand in that they are very simple ammonium salts, containing a single nitrogen atom and either straight or branched carbon chains. The binding studies revealed that the straight-chain ammonium salts gave nH values of 1 whereas the branched-chain ammonium salts had statistically significant lower nH values. The ammonium salts were tested for sigma-1 receptor activity in vitro using ratiometric Fura-2 calcium assays and the MTS cell proliferation assay. Branched-chain ammonium salts appeared to have sigma-1 receptor antagonist like effects on cytoplasmic calcium and cell proliferation, whereas the straight-chain ammonium salts behaved as sigma-1 receptor agonists. Three ammonium salts stood out as potential effective sigma-1 receptor drugs, the straight-chain ammonium salt dipentylammonium, and two branched-chain ammonium salts, bis(2-ethylhexyl)ammonium and triisopentylammonium. The ammonium salts were then tested in vivo. Dipentylammonium showed significant antidepressant properties when tested in behavioural models for depression and bis(2-ethylhexyl)ammonium and triisopentylammonium were able to significantly inhibit the growth of tumours implanted in mice. Finally I looked at the coupling of the sigma-1 receptor with G-proteins and show that sigma-1 receptor antagonists dose dependently reduce G-protein activity and inhibition of G-proteins enhanced the sigma-1 antagonists' effects of calcium signalling.

Abstract:
A radio beacon receiver system is being developed at the Jicamarca Radio Observatory. This ground-based receiver will be used to obtain ionospheric total electron content (TEC) over the Peruvian region by detecting satellite radio beacon signals. This work is part of a project that involves the development of a CubeSat radio beacon for ionospheric measurements. The receiver station will have the capability to obtain differential phase measurements from current operational satellite radio beacons and from the new CubeSat radio beacon developed at the Jicamarca Radio Observatory. Due to the proximity to the magnetic equator, the obtained TEC measurements will allow the investigation of the equatorial ionosphere which plays a significant role in the generation of irregularities such as the equatorial spread F. Here, we present a description of the initial beacon receiver system design which is based on quadrifilar helix antennas, cavity filters, amplifiers and software-defined radio equipment. Initial simulations and tests of the different stages of the receiver system, including the algorithm for the data acquisition, will be shown. In addition, we will describe the design and tests of our cavity filters that show a better performance than commercial ones. Finally, we will explain how the receiver system determinates the TEC in the ionosphere using the Differential Doppler technique and how multi-ples scientific satellites constellations like COSMOS and COSMIC help us to do our measurements. This receiver system instrumentation will add to the set of groundbased instruments already operating at the Jicamarca Radio Observatory and will provide a valuable data set for ionospheric research.

This work presents an wideband ring VCO for cognitive radio five-port based receivers. A three-stage differential topology using transmission gate was adopted in order to maintain wide and linear tuning range and a low phase-noise. Monte-Carlo analysis were performed for phase-shift response of individual stages, which is an important figure of merit in five-port works. It was observed a fairly linear correlation between control voltage and oscillation frequency in the range between 200 MHz and 1800 MHz. The VCO was preliminarily designed for IBM 130nm CMOS technology

Abstract:
The human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) protein has been associated with breast cancer progression and the HER2 status can be used to determine the type of treatment for each breast cancer patient. The purpose of this study was to examine the HER2 protein and gene statuses in breast cancer tissue samples using two methods and analyze the concordance between them. Ten paraffin-embedded, formaldehyde-fixed breast cancer tissue samples from the Biobank at the Department of Pathology and Cytology at Sundsvall Hospital were analyzed in this study. All samples were from women born between 1931 and 1976. The methods used were immunohistochemistry (IHC) to visualise the HER2 protein and silver in situ hybridization (SISH) to detect gene amplification. The IHC staining method is an indirect detection of the HER2 protein using antibodies. The SISH method used in this study is a Dual ISH which detects both the HER2 gene and the centromere region of Chromosome 17 on the same tissue slide. A HER2 gene/Chromosome 17 ratio was calculated according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This ratio was used to determine HER2 gene status. Out of ten samples, seven were positive with IHC and three were negative. The results from the SISH staining exposed a gene amplification in three of the IHC positive samples, while seven samples did not contain any amplified HER2 genes. The conclusion was that the concordance between IHC and SISH for HER2 was 60 percent.

Abstract:
Danggui Buxue Tang (DBT), a herbal decoction containing Astragali Radix (AR) and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (ASR), has been used in treating menopausal irregularity in women for more than 800 years in China. Pharmacological results showed that DBT exhibited significant estrogenic properties in vitro, which therefore suggested that DBT could activate the nuclear estrogen receptors. Here, we assessed the estrogenic properties of DBT in an ovariectomized in vivo rat model: DBT was applied to the ovariectomized rats for 3 days. The application of DBT did not alter the weight of uterus and liver, as well as the transcript expression of the proliferation markers including the estrogen receptors α and β. However, DBT stimulated the transcript expression of the estrogen responsive genes. In addition, the inductive role of DBT on the expression of members of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor family in uterus and liver of ovariectomized rats was confirmed. These responses of DBT however were clearly distinct from the response pattern detectable here for 17β-estradiol. Therefore, DBT exhibited weak, but significant, estrogenic properties in vivo; however, some of its activities were independent of the estrogen receptor. Thus, DBT could be an exciting Chinese herbal decoction for an alternative treatment of hormone replacement therapy for women in menopause without subsequent estrogenic side effects.

Khan, Junaid Ali. "Progesterone Receptor Isoforms : functional Selectivity and Pharmacological Targeting." Phd thesis, Université Paris Sud - Paris XI, 2011. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00769945.

Abstract:
Progesterone receptor (PR) is an essential pharmacological target for contraception, female reproductive disorders as well as for hormone-dependent breast and uterine cancers. Human PR is expressed as two major isoforms PRA and PRB which behave as distinct transcriptional factors. PRA vs PRB expression is often altered under pathological conditions notably breast cancer through unknown mechanisms. In this thesis we demonstrate that down-regulations of PRB and PRA proteins are negatively controlled by key phosphorylation events involving distinct MAP kinase signaling. PRA is selectively stabilized by p38 MAPK whereas p42/44 MAPK specifically controls PRB stability leading to unbalanced PRA/PRB ratios in a ligand sensitive manner. In cancer cells, elevated extracellular stimuli such as epidermal growth factors or pro-inflammatory cytokines that preferentially activate p42/44 or p38 MAPK respectively may result in opposite variations in PRA/PRB expression ratio. These results may explain altered PRA/PRB ratios often associated with breast tumors. To get a mechanistic understanding of how varied PRA/PRB ratio contributes in cell signaling, we generated an original bi-inducible PR-isoform cell model allowing selective, reversible and dose-dependent expression of PRA and/or PRB, enabling fine-tune adjustment of PRA/PRB ratio in the same cells. Using this cell-based system, we undertook genome-wide transcriptomic studies to investigate transcriptional regulation driven by unliganded and liganded PR isoforms. We report that several aspects of PR signaling such as target gene selection/transcriptional regulation, cross-talk with growth factors and antiproliferative efficacy of antiprogestin are highly dependent upon variation in PRA/PRB ratio. A new potential therapeutic strategy in PR-dependent pathological conditions may rely on the use of PR antagonists. Most of the currently available antiprogestins such as mifepristone present partial agonist activity and are not selective to PR leading to undesirable side effects. Therefore, in a collaborative project we have synthesized and characterized several new PR antagonist compounds named as APRn. Structure-activity relationship studies allowed identification of the key substitutions in steroidal skeleton responsible for agonist/antagonist character of these molecules. Several selected APRn lack partial agonist effect, are PR specific and inhibit PR transcriptional properties through a new passive mechanism of action i.e. impaired recruitment of transcriptional coregulators. Such PR selective antagonists devoid of partial agonist character might provide important therapeutic perspectives for various reproductive tract abnormalities and hormone-dependent uterine and breast cancers. Altogehter, our results provide mechanistic insights into the functional selectivity of PR isoforms and their pharmacological targeting by the use of PR antagonists.

This research reports the consolidation of the individual in the outskirts taking place, rising from the mediation of everyday life, culture, language and education. Starting from the analysis of two radio programs, Momento Saúde (Health Moment) and Força da Mulher Solidária (The strength of the Solidary Woman), presented by Edson’ Queiroz’s Community Radio station, in Dendê neighborhood, in Fortaleza, discursive sceneries are elaborated on which it can be identified how the individual from the outskirts emerges from the environment of the broadcasting station. Momento Saúde, produced by students in Nursing School, takes on a one-way speech when dealing with health issues in the neighborhood; in its narrative, it allows a glimpse at the popular notions under which the academic knowledge still lies when related to health matters. The speech marks, in this case, allows the perception that in the students’ talks there is a lack of community voices, visible from the common listening by the Women’s Group of the Solidary Socioeconomics that works in the neighborhood. This reception study, when identifying this silence, allows the organization of the program A Força da Mulher Solidária, an experience carried out by the women, who, moving around these “between-places”, give up the role of listeners and take on the role of producers of speech and meanings about life in the neighborhood. The methodological procedures combine consultations to reference books on the topic, especially Martín-Barbero and field research, through interviews, observation and interventions that occurred with the women’s program. The A Força da Mulher Solidária experience shows that, enriching the political sphere in the culture that weaves everyday life, the outskirts individual rises.
