Abstract:
Some experts believe that students are considered to be a distinctive target for radical groups’ mobilization, especially for those who are enrolled for Rohis activities at schools. This is in line with some survey result revealing that the rampant radicalism among students has increased. Unfortunately, studies on radicalism prevention tend to be more theoretical and focusing more on MA / SMA / SMK students. This study aims to reveal the rationale behind the radicalism prevention which includes some various efforts to prevent radicalism, and the results accomplished from such effort in Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) students. This is significantly important because MTs students are in their early adolescence phase that is unstable, imitative, and aggressive which makes them vulnerable for being exposed to radicalism. This study utilizes a qualitative approach. The data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, which were then, analyzed using the interactive models of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana which consisted of condensation, presentation, and verification. This study suggested that radicalism prevention was driven by the deep concern of principals and teachers of Madrasah over the rise of students who are exposed to radicalism. Madrasahs are seen to be seriously giving vaccines to students so that they are immune from the radicalism virus. The vaccine is internalized systemically and continuously involving the process of strengthening nationalism in daily routine and extracurricular activities, strengthening the counter-radicalization through the subject of PAI and PPKn, and developing the Aswaja-NU based curriculum. The vaccine is at a certain level capable of establishing students’ religious moderation values as well as it can strengthen their immunity from the confrontation of the radicalism virus. Student immunity, of course, is not interminable for the conflict between vaccines and viruses is timeless so that Madrasah must always continuously update the types of vaccines and the internalization methods.

Abstract:
This research paper aims to examine how local boroughs in the South suburbs of Stockholm work with matters relating to radicalism and violent extremism with roots in white power environments and Islam. The paper will look at the different challenges faced by the local Boroughs in tackling the problems in the future. The empirical material that forms the basis of this paper have been collected through semi structured interviews with local coordinators employed by three different boroughs within the South suburbs of Stockholm. The theoretical framework of the study is formed by a typological model that comprises different kinds of crime prevention exercises with backgrounds in superordinate values. The empirical material has been analyzed in relation to crime prevention as a societal phenomenon depending on what preventive method has been given the timely aspect related to primary, secondary or tertiary prevention. Results show that radicalism and violent extremism are phenomenon with substantial complexity, according to all participating coordinators, white power environments tend to be significantly more violent in their behaviour and serves as the primary local threat whereas activities relating to radical Islam is more limited. The coordinators speak about the necessity to work for an inclusive society rather than controlling which risks stigmatizing the individuals who could be considered in an already weak and resource scarce situations. The study show that the boroughs dominant prevention mechanisms are formed of structural and socialization prevention methods rather than effective reduction and/or controlling prevention.

Weeks, Douglas M. "Radicals and reactionaries : the polarisation of community and government in the name of public safety and security." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3416.

Abstract:
The contemporary threat of terrorism has changed the ways in which government and the public view the world. Unlike the existential threat from nation states in previous centuries, today, government and the public spend much of their effort looking for the inward threat. Brought about by high profile events such as 9/11, 7/7, and 3/11, and exacerbated by globalisation, hyper-connected social spheres, and the media, the threats from within are reinforced daily. In the UK, government has taken bold steps to foment public safety and public security but has also been criticised by some who argue that government actions have labelled Muslims as the ‘suspect other'. This thesis explores the counter-terrorism environment in London at the community/government interface, how the Metropolitan Police Service and London Fire Brigade deliver counter-terrorism policy, and how individuals and groups are reacting. It specifically explores the realities of the lived experience of those who make up London's ‘suspect community' and whether or not counter-terrorism policy can be linked to further marginalisation, radicalism, and extremism. By engaging with those that range from London's Metropolitan Police Service's Counterterrorism Command (SO15) to those that make up the radical fringe, an ethnographic portrait is developed. Through that ethnographic portrait the ‘ground truth' and complexities of the lived experience are made clear and add significant contrast to the aseptic policy environment.

Logan, Sarah Elizabeth. "Hold your friends close: counterradicalisation and political community in America and Britain." Phd thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/156341.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines counterradicalisation policy and associated measures addressing the issue of 'citizen terrorists' in the United States of America and the United Kingdom. It asks: why has counterradicalisation emerged as a counterterrorism strategy in the US and the UK? The thesis argues that counterradicalisation policies have emerged in the US and the UK because they are a response to a type of terrorist threat perceived by those states as both new and as exhibiting certain distinctive features. This threat, Al-Qaeda inspired homegrown extremism, concerns acts of violence committed by citizens who reject the anchoring of political life in a secular institution such as the state. The ideas which drive these citizens are global, 'anti-systemic' and concerned with the nature of political community. The thesis argues that counterradicalisation has emerged in response to states' perceptions of the symbolic violence of this threat in the context of the nation-state and that as a result we should understand counterradicalisation in terms of ongoing negotiations about political community and citizenship. It shows that counterradicalisation policies in the US and the UK seek to manage a threat perceived as inherently ideational and driven by the ideas, beliefs and values of citizens. This invokes particular constraints and debates which inform and shape the policy. The thesis engages with several bodies of literature in making this argument. Most importantly, it engages with citizenship theory and uses concepts of citizenship and political community to structure its empirical analysis. In doing so, it contributes to debates in citizenship theory concerning the liberalisation and contraction of citizenship, finding that counterradicalisation in the US and the UK demonstrates a considerable narrowing of ideational and informal aspects of citizenship. It also engages with literature on transnationalism and with emerging research on counterterrorism policy. This thesis contributes to what to date has been an under-theorised field, namely the relevance of terrorism and counterterrorism to the broader theoretical concerns of International Relations. In particular it moves the analysis of counterradicalisation beyond the field of Critical Terrorism Studies that has to date dominated this topic. In doing so it establishes a framework for future research concerning interaction between post 9-11 counterterrorism, citizenship and political community in International Relations.

Wood, Asmi John. "Regulation of the use of force by Islamist non-state actors : using law to regulate such use of force." Phd thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/111480.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a comparative legal examination, of the use of force by non-State actors under both international law and the shari'a. It aims to identify measures for regulating the use of force and thus to promote harm minimisation. The narrower, more specific topic examined here is to determine the legality, or otherwise, of the contemporary use, or threatened use of force, by non-State Islamist groups. Such Islamist groups often work together formally or informally, sometimes to achieve purportedly strategic ends, for reasons variously termed 'fighting for Islam' or being engaged in djihad/jihad or 'holy war' (one of djihad's less accurate contemporary definitions). Consequently, how a legal methodology can be used to regulate this behaviour is examined by a comparative analysis of (a) lawful pre-conditions for the use of force and (b) the legitimate means that may be employed during armed conflict. Under international humanitarian law (IHL), 'the means of inflicting harm upon the enemy are not unlimited and similarly the shari'a prohibits certain means of fighting and targeting. As with IHL these shari'a limits, can form the basis for creating shari'a crimes, and for criminalising such acts when perpetrated during armed conflict. Shari'a legal principles and methodologies applicable to humanitarian and criminal law are identified. There are differences between IHL and shari'a laws of war which are also examined. Islamic law however goes further than harm minimisation during conflict, emphasises that a state of justice is mandated and calls for the elimination of all injustice as a positive obligation, through the use of force if necessary and is achieved through djihad, a strictly defined and circumscribed concept. Herein however, can lie the root of the problem of the gratuitous use of force, particularly when djihad is instrumentally employed absent its regulatory framework. Shari'a views on fighting, justice, life and the reason for human existence, among other issues are also in many ways fundamentally different from the moral yardsticks underlying the current secular international legal regime, signalling potentially significant differences with respect to the regulation of the legitimate use of armed force. However, while the differences between the Western and Islamic legal traditions may at first appear substantial, the laws that result are not significantly different, arguably because what is considered 'criminal' in both legal traditions is deeply rooted in the Mosaic Law. It is shown therefore, that most differences are not irreconcilable. The shari'a is a system of law and should be treated on its merits rather than dismissed out of hand merely because of an emotive link with 'terrorism' or with radical Islam. On the other hand, critique of the shari'a (as with any system of law) is clearly legitimate and necessary, but for a useful outcome, such criticisms should be fair and objective both options examined in some detail in this thesis. This thesis concludes that the most egregious international crimes can be criminalised under the shari'a and examines practical means for doing this.

Abstract:
Following the attacks in Madrid in 2004 and in London in 2005, Europe is confronted with new jihadist terrorist attacks that have swept Europe from 2015 to the present (2018), drawing attention to the limitations of existing policies. The European Union has therefore made significant efforts in the area of counter-terrorism, which can be applied directly or indirectly to jihadist terrorism. The growth of attacks perpetrated by lonely actors and, more recently, the return of foreign fighters and their families presents itself as a possible security threat within the European Union. In this way, the European Union seeks to deal with all the dimensions associated with this type of terrorism. As such, the aim is to understand the European Union's prevention and combat policies, both internally and externally.

Abstract:
Antioxidant activity of fruits is gaining wide interest among consumers due to its importance in counteracting oxidative stress, free radicals and preventing DNA damage. Oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay is one of the commonly used assays to measure the antioxidant activity, which is based on hydrogen atom transfer mechanism. Furocoumarins present in grapefruit are reported to have antiproliferative activity, induce GST activity, inhibit biofilm formation and increase bioavailability of drugs. In the present project ORAC values were measured of Star Ruby grapefruit undergone ethylene degreening treatment, cold storage and temperature conditioning treatment, and modified atmosphere packaging which were stored at different temperatures for prolonged period. In addition, furocoumarins were quantified in Star Ruby grapefruits from cold storage and conditioning experiment conducted in Israel. Conditioning treatment is practiced prior cold storage to reduce chilling injury in grapefruits during cold storage for prolonged period. Levels of 6,7-dihyrdoxy bergamottin decreased during storage period in all three treatments.

Abstract:
Food is an essential to our existence but under certain conditions it could become the origin to the accumulative health damages. Technological processes as heating, chopping, mincing, grounding, promote the lipid oxidation process in muscle tissues and meat foodstuffs. Lipid oxidation occurred rapidly in turkey muscle, intermediate in duck, and slowest in chicken during frozen storage. Depletion of tocopherol during frozen storage was more rapid in turkey and duck compared to chicken. These processes developed from lipid peroxides produce many cytotoxic compounds including malondialdehyde (MDA). The muscle tissue is further oxidized in stomach conditions producing additional cytotoxic compounds. Oxidized lipids that are formed during digestion of a meal possess the potential to promote reactions that incur vascular diseases. A grape seed extract (1% of the meat weight) and butylated hydroxytoluene (0.2% of the lipid weight) were each effective at preventing formation of lipid oxidation products for 3 hours during co-incubation with cooked turkey meat in simulated gastric fluid (SGF). Polyphenols in the human diet, as an integral part of the meal prevent the generation and absorption of cytotoxic compounds and the destruction of essential nutrients, eg. antioxidants vitamins during the meal. Polyphenols act as antioxidants in the gastrointestinal tract; they scavenge free radicals and may interact with reactive carbonyls, enzymes and proteins. These all reactions results in decreasing the absorption of reactive carbonyls and possible other cytotoxic compounds into the plasma. Consumptions of diet high in fat and red meat are contributory risk factors partly due to an increase production of cytotoxic oxidized lipid products eg. MDA. However, the simultaneously consumption of polyphenols rich foods reduce these factors. Locating the biological site of action of polyphenols in the in the gastrointestinal tract may explain the paradox between the protective effect of a highly polyphenols rich diet and the low bioavailability of these molecules in human plasma. It may also explain the "French paradox" and the beneficial effect of Mediterranean and Japanese diets, in which food products with high antioxidants content such as polyphenols are consumed during the meal.
