Abstract:
Ab initio and DFT calculations reveal that intermolecular radical additions of both acyl and oxyacyl radials to hydrazones occur through SOMO → π*hydrazone, πhydrazone → SOMO and LPN → SOMO interactions between the radical and the hydrazone π-system. Both acetyl and methoxycarbonyl radicals show preference for addition to the carbon end of the carbon–nitrogen π-bond. At the highest level of theory used in this study (G2//MP2(full)/6-31G*), energy barriers of 11.2 and 22.6 kJ mol–1 are calculated for acetyl radical addition to the carbon and nitrogen-ends of N-aminomethanimine respectively. The analogous energy barriers for the methoxycarbonyl radical are 4.9 and 25.7 kJ mol–1 at the same level of theory.

AbstractBands of associative rings were introduced in 1973 by Weissglass. For the radicals playing most essential roles in the structure theory (in particular, for those of Jacobson, Baer, Levitsky, Koethe) it is shown how to find the radical of a band of rings. The technique of the general Kurosh-Amitsur radical theory is used to consider many radicals simultaneously.

Abstract:
In 1978 Anderson and Gardner investigated semisimple classes and recently Buys and Gerber developed the theory of special radicals in Andrunakievich varieties. In this note we continue the study of radical theory in Andrunakievich varieties. Sharpening some of the results of Anderson and Gardner we prove versions of Sands' Theorem characterizing semisimple classes by regularity, coinductivity and being closed under extensions. In the proof we follow a new method which avoids calculations with defining identities of the variety. We generalize van Leeuwen's Theorem characterizing semisimple classes of hereditary radicals as classes being regular and closed under essential extensions and subdirect sums.

Abstract:
Free radical excess occurs when cells are exposed to reactive oxygen species greater than the amount that can be neutralized by cellular produced antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase. This is termed oxidative stress, which can be caused by excessive energy intake or external pollutants. Excess free radicals are proposed to increase the rate of cell aging, injury, and mutations leading to a shortened cell life span. Vitamins A, C, and E and flavoproteins are supplements that function as free radical scavengers. Antioxidants are present in natural foods but added amounts beyond the diet may detoxify excess free radicals during “oxidative stress.” Antioxidant supplements decrease cellular damage from excess reactive oxygen species but they have not been proven to prolong life span.

Abstract:
For near-ring ideal mappings ρ1 and ρ2, we investigate radical theoretical properties of and the relationship among the class pairs (ρ1: ρ2), [Formula: see text] and (ℛρ2: ℛρ1). Conditions on ρ1 and ρ2 are given for a general class pair to form a radical class of various types. These types include the Plotkin and KA-radical varieties. A number of examples are shown to motivate the suitability of the theory of Hoehnke-radicals over KA-radicals when radical pairs of near-rings are studied. In particular, it is shown that [Formula: see text] forms a KA-radical class, where [Formula: see text] denotes the class of completely prime near-rings and [Formula: see text] the class of 3-prime near-rings. This gives another near-ring generalization of the 2-primal ring concept. The theory of radical pairs are also used to show that in general the class of 3-semiprime near-rings is not the semisimple class of the 3-prime radical.

Manolakaki, Eleni. "Truth evaluability in radical interpretation theory." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/1791.

Full text
Abstract:
The central problem of the dissertation concerns the possibility of a distinction between truth-evaluable and non-truth-evaluable utterances of a natural language. The class of truth-evaluable utterances includes assertions, con. ectures and other kinds of speech act susceptible of truth evaluation. The class of non-truth-evaluable utterances includes commands, exhortations, wishes i.e. utterances not evaluated as being true or false. The problem is placed in the context of radical interpretation theory and it shown that it is a substantial problem of Davidson‘s early theory of radical interpret at ion. I consider the possibility of distinguishing between locutionary and illocutionary act in uttering a sentence and its significance in the present project. I discuss the suggestion that the mood of the verb of the sentence signifies the required distinction between truth-evaluable utterances and non-truth-evaluable ones. I argue that no criterion for the distinction based on the mood of the verb is adequate. The solution that I propose to the problem of classifylng truth-evaluable utterances appeals to mental states. The view that grounds this line of inquiry is that the truth-evaluability of an utterance is a characteristic of it exclusively relevant to the doxastic dimension of the speaker’s mind. I discuss the constraints that the nature of radical interpretation puts upon the way we construe the notion of belief. I propose that a possible classification of mental states into doxastic and non-doxastic that would result in a classification of utterances into truth-evaluable and non-truthevaluable ones can be given by an elaborated version of a decision theoretic scheme. I suggest that a decision theoretic scheme based on a decision theory that, like Savage’s theory, grants independence axioms is a better candidate to offer a solution to the central problem of the dissertation than a scheme based on a non- standard decision theory such as Richard Jeffrey’s. I conclude by showing that the proposal I make satisfies the constraints I have considered and that it can be accommodated by a radical interpretation theory.

Liu, Chi-Ming Louis. "A Modular Theory of Radical Pro Drop." Thesis, Harvard University, 2014. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:11577.

Full text
Abstract:
Mandarin Chinese is said to be a radical pro-drop language, in the sense that verbal arguments in this language can be dropped rather freely. However, in this dissertation, I show that the omission of arguments in Mandarin Chinese is in fact constrained by various conditions. First, I demonstrate that the availability of a discourse topic is insufficient to license empty categories in Mandarin Chinese by showing that subject and object positions cannot be left empty at random. Some empty subject positions are neither true instances of nominal ellipsis nor variables bound by discourse topics; instead, they are a side effect of verb or vP movement followed by TP-ellipsis. Next, I address the issue of when objects can be "dropped" in Mandarin Chinese. I argue that structural parallelism built on verbal identity between sentences plays an important role in licensing `objectless' sentences. I propose that the mechanism responsible for the creation of such sentences is V-stranding VP-ellipsis rather than argument ellipsis. In the last part of this dissertation, I show that, although we cannot rely on the strength of discourse alone to account for empty categories, the concept of topic-hood is nevertheless implicated in the appearance of certain empty argument positions in sentences used in monologues. I claim that subject pro in Mandarin Chinese must have as its antecedent an element located in an A'-position, which can be overt or covert. In addition, I suggest that the differences between Italian, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese with respect to the use of subject pro can be boiled down to the featural properties of the covert topic TOP preceding subject pro: this covert topic has inherently valued phi-features in Italian and Japanese, while its counterpart in Mandarin Chinese does not.

McInnis, Shelley, and n/a. "An experiment with radical pedagogy." University of Canberra. Education, 1989. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060928.122201.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an analysis of some research undertaken with students in a unit on human sexuality. It is a critical account of an experiment with 'radical' pedagogy which deliberately forsakes the pessimistic determinism of social reproduction theory in education and assumes the fundamental optimism of resistance theory, wherein human actors are capable of penetrating oppressive ideology and practice and working towards emancipation and social change. The experiment is an attempt to implement radical pedagogy in a particular classroom, and the body of the thesis consists of a critique of data collected from participants' notes and transcriptions of video and audio-tapes of thirteen, twohour class sessions. The first chapter of the thesis outlines the nature of a pedagogical style which could be described as counterhegemonic, non-reproductive, or liberatory, and it specifies the elements of a 'radical' approach to classroom process and content, which is distinguished from a 'traditional' one. Subsequent chapters present a critical analysis of actual classroom 'content' and 'process', which is based on a study of reconstructed sessional data, and the final chapter discusses the factors which limited the 'success' of the experiment, and attempts to draw some conclusions about the liberatory possibilities of radical pedagogy.

Abstract:
This contribution relates uncertainty to time. It illustrates that the uncertainty inherent in different theories diverges in a manner dictated by the time system used and its associated construction of how agents perceive time to pass. Different time systems relate to different contexts. Only one time system is shown to be consistent with fundamental uncertainty. If this so, then it can be shown that Kaleckian theory of the firm can be consistent with post Keynesian radical uncertainty.

Stewart, Colin. "Educational extremism : the function and failure of radical theory." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1994. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk/R?func=search-advanced-go&find_code1=WSN&request1=AAIU067391.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis opens with a discussion of the need or otherwise for radical intervention in educational theory and practice, and the manner in which such, when it occurs, may be interpreted as 'extremism', seriously disabling any contribution that the radical might make. It is proposed that a series of confrontations with reality, in the form of specific incidents, comprise the fundamental building blocks of an individual's experience. An analysis is presented of the manner in which the confrontation between an individual and an incident develops; this includes the development of extremism. The resultant schema is of relevance to the entire thesis. Having argued that there is a real problem (when radicals, in confronting reality, see some people as marginalised and attempt to help them, they themselves are marginalised and rendered ineffectual), the thesis proceeds to look more closely at radicals. In an attempt to clarify the situation, a detailed description is offered of the factors responsible for the genesis of the radical: whence comes his or her philosophy? Notwithstanding the legitimacy (in the opinion of the thesis) of the radicals' reaction to reality, it appears, as has been noted, that their voices are not heard. The mechanisms that produce this deafness in society are discussed, and the manner in which many individuals who are aware of the unjust marginalisation of some groups nevertheless become passive and inert before a problem that is, they feel, too great for them. Fundamental to this inertia is the ultimate acceptance of a vision of the person which tolerates inequity and injustice so long as they are features of someone else's experience. Opposed to this inertia, radicals seek to accompany marginalised individuals and groups.

Central Queensland University. Computer Science, 2004. http://library-resources.cqu.edu.au./thesis/adt-QCQU/public/adt-QCQU20050411.102928.

Full text
Abstract:
This research aims to refresh and reinterpret the radical theory of associative rings using the base radical and base semisimple class constructions. It also endeavours to generalise some results about ideals of rings in terms of accessible subrings. A characterisation of accessible subrings is included. By applying the base radical and base semisimple class constructions to many of the known results in established radical theory a number of gaps are uncovered and closed, with the goal of making the theory more accessible to advanced undergraduate and graduate students and mathematicians in related fields, and to open up new areas of investigation. After a literature review and brief reminder of algebra rudiments, the useful properties of accessible subrings and the U and S operators independent from radical class connections are described. The section on accessible subrings illustrates that replacing ideals with accessible subrings is indeed possible for a number of results and demonstrates its usefulness. The traditional radical and semisimple class definitions are included and it is shown that the base radical and base semisimple class constructions are equivalent. Diagrams illustrating the constructions support the definitions. From then on, all radical and semisimple classes mentioned are understood to have the base radical and base semisimple class form. Subject to the constraints of this work, many known results of traditional radical theory are reinterpreted with new proofs, illustrating the potential to simplify the understanding of radical theory using the base radical and base semisimple class constructions. Along with reinterpreting known results, new results emerge giving further insight to radical theory and its intricacies. Accessible subrings and the U and S operators are integrated into the development. The duality between the base radical and base semisimple class constructions is demonstrated in earnest. With a measure of the theory presented, the new constructions are applied to examples and concrete radicals. Context is supported by establishing the relationship between some well-known rings and the radical and related classes of interest. The title of the thesis, Towards a Reinterpretation of the Radical Theory of Associative Rings Using Base Radical and Base Semisimple Class Constructions, reflects the understanding that reinterpreting the entirety of radical theory is beyond the scope of this work. The conclusion includes an outlook listing further research that time did not allow.

Picard, E. Kezia. "A radical relational agency : Foucault, complexity theory and environmental resistances." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2010. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11450/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to examine a radical relational agency, applied to contemporary environmental resistances, that incorporates both the thought of Michel Foucault and complexity theory. While Foucault’s thought, following from his argument that power is a relation, implies a relational agency, it does not, however, account for the agency of nonhumans and environments. Because power is a relation and not a possession, it can no longer be viewed as an attribute of individual subjects. Similarly, a relational agency is defined as an aspect of power relations. Complexity theory, on the other hand, acknowledges that humans interact with nonhumans and environments, but does not acknowledge that all relations are relations of power. In addition to Foucault’s explanation of power relations, complexity theory explicitly describes the processes of self-organization through which individual and diverse agents interact and change can emerge. Thus, a radical relational agency is defined as an aspect of the power relationships between many diverse agents. Change, according to both Foucault and complexity theory, happens nonlinearly. As a result, it often occurs unpredictably. However, change within complex systems is also limited by previous historical emergences. In this sense, both possibility and risk are inherent in the relationships between humans, nonhumans and environments. Indeed, I argue that a radical relational agency occurs because there are both possibilities and risks generated within ecological relations and relations of power. Therefore, I argue that any environmental action must account for the unpredictability inherent to the complex interactions between humans, nonhumans and environments.

Woodford, Clare M. "Democracy, subjectivity and voice : Emersonian perfectionism and radical democratic theory." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2010. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/179917/.

Full text
Abstract:
Motivated by concern about growing social marginalisation and injustice in Western democracies, this thesis examines these issues from the perspectives of post-structuralist and perfectionist traditions of democratic political thought. Both traditions fear that dominant contemporary political theory, here represented by Rawlsian liberalism, is insufficiently attentive to voice. I seek to explore the critique put forward by each tradition, and demonstrate how in contrast to Rawls, the post-structuralists seek an open, revisable democracy, achieved via a culture of dissent or a democratic ethos. However, since post-structuralism lacks attention to the formation of democratic subjectivity I suggest that it may be productive to look to Cavell’s work on this topic, to help improve the post-structuralist ability to be attentive to the emergence of voice. Yet, given Cavell’s neglect of constructive social power, it becomes necessary to first bridge the gap between Cavell and the post-structuralists by examining the move from voicelessness to voice in more detail. I therefore propose using Rancière’s work on the development of subjectivity, complemented by reference to James Tully and Cristoph Menke, to show how Cavellian aversive thinking can help develop democratic subjects. This also leads me to challenge the strict nature of the divide that Rancière envisions between la politique and la police, making it possible for me to read Rancière as a call for political action, re-casting the ordinary as extraordinary. Hence I suggest that radical democratic political thinkers need to attend to the background police order to consider if it is possible to institutionalise conditions to encourage eruptions of politics, by supporting the cultivation and emergence of individual voice.

Abstract:
Infrared laser absorption techniques have been employed to measure absolute transition moments for several radical species by using a variety of techniques. For the OH radical, high precision relative transition strengths have been measured with a color center laser and used to determine the OH dipole moment function. The dipole moment function provides absolute transition strengths for Δv = 1–3 transitions with v″ < 9. This information is essential for quantitative modelling of the OH Meinel night glow. The infrared band strengths for all three fundamental vibrations of the HO2 radical have been directly measured by using tunable infrared diode laser absorption. The HO2 radicals were prepared with a known column density by reacting a known quantity of F atoms with excess H2O2. These band strengths will be used to measure HO2 radical concentrations in the troposphere. Band strengths for the BF, CF2, and CH3 radicals have also been obtained using tunable diode laser absorption. These species' concentrations were quantified by by using various optical and chemical techniques. The experimental infrared transition strengths discussed above will be compared with published theoretical transition strengths obtained by using several techniques.

Abstract:
Quantum chemical investigations of the action of hindered phenol radical stabilizers in lubricant degradation chemistry have been completed. We are currently developing the first mechanistic models of lubricant degradation with the aim of including the chemistry of additives such as radical stabilizers that are found in commercial lubricant formulations. A key component of development of these models is obtaining reliable estimates of the kinetic parameters for all reactions. Specifically, rate constants and structure-reactivity correlations for the interaction of hindered phenol radical stabilizers with small peroxy radicals have been sought using quantum chemistry and transition state theory. Accurate thermodynamic properties of hindered phenol radical stabilizers and structure-reactivity relationships have been obtained. Such relationships provide researchers the ability to quickly estimate reactivity of hindered phenol stabilizers using their thermodynamic properties and therefore may be useful in additive design.

Tyson, Paul. Sovereignty and Biosecurity: Can we prevent ius from disappearing into dominium? Mέta | Centre for Postcapitalist Civilisation, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.55405/mwp3en.

Full text
Abstract:
Drawing on Milbank and Agamben, a politico-juridical anthropology matrix can be drawn describing the relations between ius and bios (justice and political life) on the one hand and dominium and zoe (private power and ‘bare life’) on the other hand. Mapping movements in the basic configurations of this matrix over the long sweep of Western cultural history enable us to see where we are currently situated in relation to the nexus between politico-juridical authority (sovereignty) and the emergency use of executive State powers in the context of biosecurity. The argument presented is that pre-19th century understandings of ius and bios presupposed transcendent categories of Justice and the Common Good that were not naturalistically defined. The very recent idea of a purely naturalistic naturalism has made distinctions between bios and zoe un-locatable and civic ius is now disappearing into a strangely ‘private’ total power (dominium) over the bodies of citizens, as exercised by the State. The very meaning of politico-juridical authority and the sovereignty of the State is undergoing radical change when viewed from a long perspective. This paper suggests that the ancient distinction between power and authority is becoming meaningless, and that this loss erodes the ideas of justice and political life in the Western tradition. Early modern capitalism still retained at least the theory of a Providential moral order, but since the late 19th century, morality has become fully naturalized and secularized, such that what moral categories Classical economics had have been radically instrumentalized since. In the postcapitalist neoliberal world order, no high horizon of just power –no spiritual conception of sovereignty– remains. The paper argues that the reduction of authority to power, which flows from the absence of any traditional conception of sovereignty, is happening with particular ease in Australia, and that in Australia it is only the Indigenous attempt to have their prior sovereignty –as a spiritual reality– recognized that is pushing back against the collapse of political authority into mere executive power.

Abstract:
The DNAN (2,4-dinitroanisole), NTO (3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one), and NQ (nitroguanidine) are important insensitive energetic materials used in military applications. They may find their way to the environment during manufacturing, transportation, storage, training, and disposal. A detailed investigation of possible mechanisms for self-degradation of radical-anions formed by addition of solvated electron to DNAN, NTO, and NQ species was performed by computational study using the PCM(Pauling)/M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) approach. Obtained results suggest that only NQ radical-anion is able for self-degradation by elimination of nitrite anion. Formation of urea radical on the earlier stage of the NQ radical-anion degradation was also predicted.

Finkelstain, Israel, Steven Buccola, and Ziv Bar-Shira. Pooling and Pricing Schemes for Marketing Agricultural Products. United States Department of Agriculture, August 1993. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/1993.7568099.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years there has been a growing concern over the performance of Israel and U.S. agricultural marketing organizations. In Israel, poor performance of some marketing institutions has led to radical reforms. Examples are the two leading export industries - citrus and flowers. In the U.S., growth of local market power is eliminating competitive row product prices which served as the basis for farmer cooperative payment plans. This research studies, theoretically, several aspects of the above problem and develops empirical methods to assess their relative importance. The theoretical part deals with two related aspects of the operation of processing and marketing firms. The first is the technological structure of these firms. To this end, we formalize a detailed theory that describes the production process itself and the firm's decision. The model accounts for multiple products and product characteristics. The usefulness of the theory for measurement of productivity and pricing of raw material is demonstrated. The second aspect of the processing and marketing firm that we study is unique to the agricultural sector, where many such firms are cooperatives. In such cooperative an efficient and fair mechanism for purchasing raw materials from members is crucial to successful performances of the firm. We focus on: 1) pricing of raw materials. 2) comparison of employment of quota and price regimes by the cooperative to regulate the quantities, supplied by members. We take into consideration that the cooperative management is subject to pressure from member farmers. 3) Tier pricing for raw materials in order to ensure efficiency and zero profits at the cooperative level. This problem is examined in both closed and open cooperatives. The empirical part focuses in: 1) the development of methodologies for estimating demand for differentiated products; 2) assessing farmers response to component pricing; 3) measurement of potential and actual exploitation of market power by an agricultural marketing firm. The usefulness of the developed methodologies are demonstrated by several application to agricultural sub-sectors, including: U.S. dairy industry, Oregon wine industry, Israeli Cotton industry and Israeli Citrus industry.

Ivaldi, Gilles, and Emilia Zankina. Introduction to the report on the impact of the Russia–Ukraine War on right-wing populism in Europe. European Center for Populism Studies (ECPS), March 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.55271/rp0034.

Full text
Abstract:
Overall, the analysis in this report concerns a total of 37 populist Radical Right parties across 12 West European and 10 East European countries, plus Turkey. This report is divided into 23 country chapters. Their principal findings are discussed comparatively in the conclusion. Our findings suggest substantial variability in the international agenda of populist Radical Right parties in Europe. Such heterogeneity is found in their foreign policy positions towards NATO, the EU, and Russia before the war, but we also find variation in those parties’ performances during the Ukraine crisis after the outbreak of the war. Moreover, the cross-national analysis shows that radical right-wing populist parties have varied in the set of arguments and rhetoric that they have used since the beginning of the Russian invasion to try and sustain their electoral appeal and maintain credibility with voters by evading accusations of sympathy for Russia or, in some cases, by showcasing their support for Russia. Such variability is observed across countries but also within them and, in some cases, within the populist Radical Right parties themselves, which suggests that they should not necessarily be considered unitary actors despite what is often deemed a highly centralized organization and strong leadership.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: The aims of this study are: 1. To compare urinary complications of robot-assisted radical prostatectomy(RARP) and laparoscopic radical prostatectomy(LRP) in patients with prostate cancer; 2. To compare sexual complications of RARP and LRP in patients with prostate cancer. Condition being studied: Prostate cancer is one of the most prevalent types of cancer; according to 2018 statistics, prostate cancer was responsible for 7.1% of all cancer in men. The primary intervention in such patients is radical prostatectomy surgery (RP), which could be performed in different methods in patients that cancer has not spread beyond the prostate gland or has not spread much. One of the most common types of RP is laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. There are several techniques for performing RP; two are Conventional Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy (LRP) and Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy (RARP). Sexual and urinary difficulties can occur in prostate cancer patients due to cancer itself or the treatment. Like any treatment option and surgery, radical prostatectomy can carry risks, like urinary(e.g., incontinency) and sexual complications(e.g., Impotence). In this review, we compared urinary and sexual complications of LRP and RARP.

Nijhuis, Chris, Bertjan Verbeek, and Andrej Zaslove. Disagreement among populists in the Netherlands: The diverging rhetorical and policy positions of Dutch populist Radical Right parties following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. European Center for Populism Studies (ECPS), March 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.55271/rp0032.

Abstract:
The Netherlands boasts a wide array of populist Radical Right parties, from the Freedom Party (PVV) and Forum for Democracy (FvD) to Correct Alternative 2021 (JA21). To complicate matters further, the left-wing Socialist Party (SP) is also considered a populist party. Mirroring the diversity of responses to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in the rest of Europe, Dutch populist parties have reacted in myriad ways. Whereas the PVV condemned the Russian invasion, the FvD remained highly supportive of Putin. Interestingly, while many European populist Radical Right leaders, following public opinion, pivoted away from support for Russia, the FvD has maintained its support for Putin’s regime throughout 2022. JA21, on the other hand, has followed the non-populist parties, calling for tougher sanctions on Russia. This report maps the diverse positions of the three populist Radical Right parties regarding Russia. However, we also seek to explain why they have chosen such diverse paths. The report focuses on supply-side considerations, such as the impact of the parties’ relative degree of populism, their attaching ideology, and their position in the highly fragmented party system.
