Cordell, Dotti. "African American Community College Students' Experiences with Professorial Radical Care." Thesis, University of Southern California, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10276569.

Full text
Abstract:

This study’s purpose was to document African American community college student experiences related to new theory at the nexus of relational care theory and BlackCrit, specifically, radical care theory. Faculty-student relational care experiences have demonstrated significant power to both support and empower historically minoritized African American students in community college. Impactful faculty-student relationships positively influence students in academics, their personal lives, and as members of the African American community. Utilizing a framework of care theory and BlackCrit with corresponding critical methodology, this study determined that radical care interactions between faculty members and students affirms students such that they perform better academically, realize positive effects in their personal lives, and engage differently as members of the Black community, both on and off-campus. Results demonstrate the significant importance of college faculty member selection aligned to those who demonstrate reciprocal, genuine care in their work with students. It further highlights the imperative of professional development dedicated both to enhancing academe awareness of radical care, and to the development of radical care attributes in community college faculty. Dedicated radical care serves to counters deficit thinking and opportunity gaps existing between African American community college students and peers of other races. The study open avenues for further exploration of radical care among and between other historically marginalized groups, and for continued research into radical care singularity, that is, care proffered by professors of the same race. Radical care principles are widely applicable and provide opportunities for study between classified staff members and students.

Homer, Robyn L. "In the (Radical) Pursuit of Self-Care: Feminist Participatory Action Research with Victim Advocates." Scholar Commons, 2014. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5242.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite victim advocates' missions of helping survivors of abuse, advocacy work takes a toll on workers. Advocates perform a multitude of tasks in their jobs including care work, emotional labor, and empowerment counseling which may subject them to consequences such as burnout, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction. As such, this thesis details the work I conducted with the Butterfly Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault agency shelter advocates. The purpose of my thesis was to (1) document and review advocates' self-identified work-related needs and to (2) co-construct an educational intervention with the advocates using feminist participatory action research that would help them manage these aspects of their work. I argue that advocacy work impacts the Butterfly advocates across relational and wellness dimensions which inspired advocates' need to implement individual and organizational self-care practices. Furthermore, I contend that the process of feminist participatory action research constructed sustainable individual and organizational self-care interventions with the shelter advocates. The findings have implications for employees in advocacy work and for the larger discourse regarding the relationship between women and care work. Furthermore, findings reveal that creating a culture of self-care may serve as a way to reinforce and resist hegemonic Western notions of work culture in trauma related and non-trauma related fields.

Claytor, Ann. "A changing faith? : a history of developments in radical critiques of psychiatry since the 1960's." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1993. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3476/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis examines the emergence of anti-psychiatry since the early 1960s, addressing two questions: 1. Why did anti-psychiatry emerge at this time? 2. How influential is anti-psychiatry today? Anti -psychiatry was found not to consist of one identifiable set of' proposals, but a shifting package of views. One factor remains consistent across versions of anti-psychiatry: criticism of medicalisation of mental disorder. Anti-psychiatry emerged during the 1960s for two reasons: a) Psychiatrists had adopted positivistic conceptualisations of human disorder, which reduced psychiatric patients to 'malfunctioning machines'. Anti-psychiatry restored the patient's subjectivity to the centre of psychiatric practice, b) The mid-twentieth century saw the expansion of state planning and a reduced emphasis upon individual liberty. Anti-psychiatry was part of the counter- culture, which criticised the welfare' state as a machine for producing 'normality'/conformity. 1960s Anti -psychiatry was more libertarian than Marxist. By the 1970s, anti-psychiatry divided into two distinct forms: radical psychotherapy and Marxist anti-therapy. Versions of Marxist anti-therapy fail to propose alternatives to therapy which are not themselves therapeutic or paratherapeutic. This problem derives from excessive reliance upon Szasz's libertarian critique which is flawed. Anti-psychiatry is less influential today; having suffered from academic criticism and failed to offer solutions to the problems posed by 'community care’. It competes with critiques which are pro-democracy, rather than anti- medicine. Italian reforms provide one possible model. MIND's mental health campaigns are democratically rather than anti -psychiatrically based. The user movement includes both anti -psychiatry c users and democratically-minded ones". Democratisation of mental health provision is complicated by the continuing need for expert professionals and some compulsory treatment, and by problems inherent within the user movement. However, democracy rather than anti-psychiatry now offers the best basis for political critiques of psychiatry.

Li, Mingmei. "Application of the Bayesian belief network model to evaluate variances in a clinical caremap: Radical prostatectomy case study." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/26693.

Full text
Abstract:
A clinical caremap is a cost-effective tool for clinical process improvement that has been accepted in hospitals and various healthcare organizations in many countries. However, compared to the literature describing the initial development of the clinical caremaps, the evaluation of the impact of the variances in the caremap pathway on the patient's expected outcomes and the patient's length of stay (LOS) remains relatively less analyzed. In this research, we deal with the issue of variances in the clinical caremap by building a Bayesian belief network named BBN_RPC to model the radical prostatectomy caremap. The BBN_RPC model provides insight into probabilistic dependencies that exist among the activities (variables) in the caremap. We then use the BBN_RPC model to analyze possible variances and to make inferences. The results show that most of the activities in the caremap are related with each other and to some extent linked with the patient's length of stay (LOS), whereas different activities have different weights on the LOS. Using radical prostatectomy patients' data from a retrospective chart study conducted at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, we have applied the BBN_RPC model to predict a patient's future conditions and the LOS, based on the current observations. Predictive accuracy of the BBN_RPC model was evaluated by cross validation tests, which showed the accuracy for predicting the patient's LOS, given the patient's observations during the first two post-op days, is at approximately 94% level.

Menzel, Jasmin Patricia. "Synthesis of novel polymeric materials with potential application in hair care products : combining controlled radical polymerisation and polymer modification." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2012. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/80263/.

Full text
Abstract:
It was the original aim of this project to develop new, potentially stimuli sensitive materials with interesting architectures for potential application in hair care products such as shampoos, conditioners or styling products. Furthermore, various methods for the introduction of silicon functionalities into such polymers were investigated. Several methods of controlled radical polymerisation were combined with polymer end group modification to achieve these goals. Initially, polymerisation of several dimethacrylate monomers under catalytic chain transfer (CCT) conditions was optimised with regard to monomer conversion and control of Mw, thus preventing macro-gelation. CCTP is an excellent method for the synthesis of low molecular weight polymers retaining terminal vinyl groups which can be subsequently exploited for end group modification. Polymerising dimethacrylates under these conditions, the formation of highly branched architectures and the retention of a larger number of pendent vinyl groups adds more interesting aspects to synthesised materials. The incorporation of silicon functionalities was attempted in two ways: Via polymerisation of poly(dimethyl siloxane) dimethacrylates and via copolymerisation of a silicon containing monofunctional methacrylate with EGDMA. One of the PDMS dimethacrylates employed for CCTP was synthesed from a silanol terminated PDMS, attempting to introduce hydrolysable functionality and thus yielding potentially hydrolysable, hyperbranched polymers. Michael thiol-ene addition was subsequently used to decorate the pendant vinyl groups in CCTP polymers with a range of thiols, yielding highly functionalised polymers with hyperbranched architecture and low molecular weights. Following up on the idea of developing potentially hydrolysable, silicon containing polymers the synthesis of triblock copolymers with a PDMS middle block was attempted. PDMS dimethacrylates (silanol) were reacted with various thiols, ranging from small functional thiols like benzyl mercaptan or thioglycerol to PEG-thiols obtained via end group modification of mPEGs to aminolysed polymers previously synthesised by RAFT polymerisation. This part of the project was subsequently modified and an alternative approach for the synthesis of PDMS containing amphiphilic di- and triblock copolymers was investigated: Mono- and difunctional PDMS macroinitiators suitable for both ATRP and SET-LRP were synthesised via functionalisation of carbinol terminated PDMS. ATRP and SET-LRP were subsequently compared in the polymerisation of OEGMEMA monomers using these macroinitiators. Thermo-responsitivity of aqueous solutions of the resulting di- and triblock copolymers was studied using turbidimetry and Dynamic Light Scattering. Phase transitions in bulk were characterised by Differential Scanning Calorimetry and thermal stability was investigated via Thermogravimetric Analysis.

Barry, Justin. "The Solvent Cage Effect: Using Microviscosity to Predict the Recombination Efficiency of Geminate Radicals Formed by the Photolysis of the Mo-Mo Bond of Cpʹ2Mo2(CO)6." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/23713.

Full text
Abstract:
Radicals are core reactive species that occur in almost every subfield of chemistry. In particular, solution phase radicals find their way into biochemistry (e.g. vitamin B12), and in polymer chemistry (e.g. radical polymerizations) just to name a few. Yet, given the proliferation of radical chemistry, there are still fundamental aspects of it that are poorly understood. This dissertation probed factors that influence the solvent cage effect. The solvent cage effect is where two radicals are held in close proximity to one another and prevented from easily escaping (to form free radicals) by a cage of solvent molecules. A convenient metric of the solvent cage effect is the radical recombination efficiency (FcP). Typically, FcP correlates with the bulk viscosity of the solution, however, this parameter only produces qualitative assessments. This dissertation outlines a method to quantitatively predict FcP using the microviscosity. This microviscosity dependence holds for non polar, aromatic, polar, and hydrogen-bonding solvents, along with solutions that contain polymers. Microviscosity is a great metric because it addresses an underlying reason for the solvent cage effect, the strength of the cage. Not only does the strength of the solvent cage around the radical pair affect FcP, but so does the identity of the radicals themselves. That is, the strength of the solvent cage is one piece to forming a total predictive model. FcP for the Cp'2Mo2(CO)6 dimer also varies with the wavelength of irradiation. Identifying the mechanism by which this wavelength dependence occurs may also provide another factor to include in an overall model of the solvent cage effect. Also, an attempt at synthesizing an asymmetric molybdenum dimer was performed. This asymmetric dimer would allow the study of solvent caged radical pairs that are different from each other. Predicting the photochemical cage pair recombination efficiency (FcP) is the major topic of this dissertation. However, there is also the collisional cage recombination efficiency (Fcʹ). This is where free radicals come together in what is called a collisional solvent cage pair. A method and values of Fcʹ are detailed later in this dissertation. This dissertation contains previously published and unpublished co-authored material.

Full text
Abstract:
The majority of women's health nurses in this study work in generalist community health centres. They have developed their praxis within the philosophy and policies of the broader women's health movement and primary health care principles in Australia. The fundamental assumption underlying this study is that women's health nurses possess a unique body of knowledge and clinical wisdom that has not been previously documented and explored. The epistemological base from which these nurses' operate offers important insights into the substantive issues that create and continually shape the practice world of nurses and their clients. Whether this represents a (re)construction of the dominant forms of health care service delivery for women is examined in this study. The study specifically aims at exploring the practice issues and experience of women's health service provision by women's health nurses in the context of the provision of cervical cancer screening services. In mapping this particular group of nurses practice, it sets out to examine the professional and theoretical issues in contemporary nursing and women's health care. In critically analysing the powerful discourses that shape and reshape nursing work, the study raises the concern that previous analyses of pursing work tend to universalise the structural and social subordination of nurses and nursing knowledge. This universalism is most often based on examples of midwifery and nursing work in hospital settings, and subsequently, because of these conceptualisations, all of nursing is too often deemed as a dependent occupation, with little agency, and is analysed as always in relation to medicine, to hospitals, to other knowledge forms. Denoting certain discourses as dominant proposes a relationship of power and knowledge and the thesis argues that all work relations and practices in health are structured by certain power/knowledge relations. This analysis reveals that there IX are many competing and complimentary power/knowledge relations that structure nursing, but that nursing, and in particular women's health nurses, also challenge the power/knowledge relations around them. Through examining theories of power and knowledge the analysis, argues that theoretical eclecticism is necessary to address the complex and varied nature of nursing work. In particular it identifies that postmodern and radical feminist theorising provide the most appropriate framework to further analyse and interpret the work of women's health nurses. Fundamental to the position argued in this thesis is a feminist perspective. This position creates important theoretical and methodological links throughout the whole study. Feminist methodology was employed to guide the design, the collection and the analysis. Intrinsic to this process was the use of the 'voices' of women's health nurses as the basis for theorising. The 'voices' of these nurses are highlighted in the chapters as italicised bold script. A constant companion along the way in examining women's health nurses' work, was the reflexivity with feminist research processes, the theoretical discussions and their 'voices'. Capturing and analysing descriptive accounts of nursing praxis is seen in this thesis as providing a way to theorise about nursing work. This methodology is able to demonstrate the knowledge forms embedded in clinical nursing praxis. Three conceptual threads emerge throughout the discussions: one focuses on nursing praxis as a distinct process, with its own distinct epistemological base rather than in relation to 'other' knowledge forms; another describes the medical restriction and opposition as experienced by this group of nurses, but also of their resistance to medical opposition. The third theme apparent from the interviews, and which was conceptualised as beyond resistance, was the description of the alternative discourses evident in nursing work, and this focused on notions of being a professional and on autonomous nursing praxis. This study concludes that rather than accepting the totalising discourses about nursing there are examples within nursing of resistance—both ideologically and X in practice—to these dominant discourses. Women's health nurses represent an important model of women's health service delivery, an analysis of which can contribute to critically reflecting on the 'paradigm of oppression' cited in nursing and about nursing more generally. Reflecting on women's health service delivery also has relevance in today's policy environment, where structural shifts in Commonwealth/State funding arrangements in community based care, may undermine women's health programs. In summary this study identifies three important propositions for nursing: • nursing praxis can reconstruct traditional models of health care; • nursing praxis is powerful and able to 'resist' dominant discourses; and • nursing praxis can be transformative. Joining feminist perspectives and alternative analyses of power provides a pluralistic and emancipatory politics for viewing, describing and analysing 'other' nursing work. At the micro sites of power and knowledge relations—in the everyday practice worlds of nurses, of negotiation and renegotiation, of work on the margins and at the centre—women's health nurses' praxis operates as a positive, productive and reconstructive force in health care.

Ritterbusch, Amy E. "A Youth Vision of the City: The Socio-Spatial Lives and Exclusion of Street Girls in Bogota, Colombia." FIU Digital Commons, 2011. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/432.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation documents the everyday lives and spaces of a population of youth typically constructed as out of place, and the broader urban context in which they are rendered as such. Thirty-three female and transgender street youth participated in the development of this youth-based participatory action research (YPAR) project utilizing geo-ethnographic methods, auto-photography, and archival research throughout a six-phase, eighteen-month research process in Bogotá, Colombia. This dissertation details the participatory writing process that enabled the YPAR research team to destabilize dominant representations of both street girls and urban space and the participatory mapping process that enabled the development of a youth vision of the city through cartographic images. The maps display individual and aggregate spatial data indicating trends within and making comparisons between three subgroups of the research population according to nine spatial variables. These spatial data, coupled with photographic and ethnographic data, substantiate that street girls’ mobilities and activity spaces intersect with and are altered by state-sponsored urban renewal projects and paramilitary-led social cleansing killings, both efforts to clean up Bogotá by purging the city center of deviant populations and places. Advancing an ethical approach to conducting research with excluded populations, this dissertation argues for the enactment of critical field praxis and care ethics within a YPAR framework to incorporate young people as principal research actors rather than merely voices represented in adultist academic discourse. Interjection of considerations of space, gender, and participation into the study of street youth produce new ways of envisioning the city and the role of young people in research. Instead of seeing the city from a panoptic view, Bogotá is revealed through the eyes of street youth who participated in the construction and feminist visualization of a new cartography and counter-map of the city grounded in embodied, situated praxis. This dissertation presents a socially responsible approach to conducting action-research with high-risk youth by documenting how street girls reclaim their right to the city on paper and in practice; through maps of their everyday exclusion in Bogotá followed by activism to fight against it.

The Person Centred Approach (PCA), founded by Carl Rogers, can only be justified from a set of values and ethics and not only as an application of skills and knowledge. Furthermore, from studies of Figueiredo (1996), it is established the importance of ethos as a search for a place to the Other in the constitution of psychologies. In what refers to the place of the Other in the constitution of subjectivity, Freire (2002) investigates the place to alterity in several modern psychologies and states that in PCA, the place for Levinasâ radical alterity is vacant, as in other psychologies. The Other, as postulated by Levinas (2008 [1961]), is precedent and transcendent to the I; not being possible to totalize and understand it fully; it shows the dimension of the strange in the psychological experience. This Other is not so dear figure to psychologies as it appears to be. On the other hand, Peter Schmid (1999) conceives that ethics is the first issue to be considered when it comes to PCA, either its theory or its practice. Hence, the present paper aims to present the work of Peter Schmid to the Brazilian community of Rogerian approach. The perspective of this author is grounded in an important dialogue with the philosophies of dialogue and a vision of the human as radically a person, which offers another way to face the alterity in Rogerian theory and practice. Such change presents a fruitful approach to ethical philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas. A methodology for the study, we used an almost-in-method inspired by the philosophies of Levinas (2008 [1961]) and Derrida (2007), in which we seek, among other things, to put on display the polysemy of the studied speeches. We conclude that, despite the divergences among the prospect formulated by Schmid with Levinasian ethics, doing readings of the main concepts of the PCA, it shows a closer relationship with that one and a new way of dealing with the alterity within the framework of the Rogerian approach. With this work, we hope to foment a greater dialogue and production on the clinical and psychotherapeutic care of the person and the place offered to otherness in Rogerian psychology.

An experimental approach was taken in determining the quantum yield of Ruthenium(II) with Oxygen using two different Ru complexes. This reaction results in Ruthenium(III) and O2-. The Coulombic interactions caused by a carboxylate functional was found to increase the yield of charge separation. This was done using a diode to measure the intensity of the completed reaction over a certain time frame. The intensities were turned into concentrations. The concentration over time was used to determine the quantum yield. This information is useful in creating more efficient light emitting diodes.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis suggests an integrated vision of ethical and feminist questions that arise when using of the concept of « care ». The theoretical field called « carology », also referred to as the ethics of care, or « relational paradigm » questions the male biais in philosophy and, simultaneously, some basic philosophical distinctions such as reason / emotions or moral impartialism / contextualism, questionning alongside the ethical rationalism postulate. Basically the result of a synthetic approach, the core of this thesis is located in an invitation to consider care not simply as an ethical « device », but more as a world vision (a culture). Regarding debates in the very field of carology, conceptions from its theoretical « second wave » (those highlighting the practical and political value of care) are outlined in order to reposition the concept in its « initial phase ». On feminist issues, the outlined posture is « differentialist » — promotes the different voice in a conception of care as gendered (though radical, neither liberal, nor essentialist), so that female relational culture is presented in its universal potential more than its marginalized status (thus caring doesn’t have to be extracted from the range of feelings and gender). A radical reading also points out the dualist biais of human thought, as well as the primitive or « ontological » character of paradigms that contributes to paralyse carology [andro/ anthropo/ logocentric] — but also in part reformulâtes it. It then highlights the necessity to project the society of care as an « accessible idealism » built both on the promise of a post-patriarchal humanity and the enhancement of concrete, (though imperfect), intelligible and empowering forms of female relational culture — caring as a power rather than an alienation. The whole proposition results in an anthropological synthesis of care issues that aims to duly record relational mechanisms in their diversity (moral, epistemic, cognitive, symbolic, institutional, even metaphysical), and enlarge its reach to the non-human world. Finally, ilt presents the aboriginal traditional thought as a consistant « inspiring model » to progress towards a culturally integrated society of care.

Abstract:
The Jewish community in Britain has been characterised by its high degree of conformity. This study seeks to extend the parameters of Jewish life by including those hitherto excluded from the historical narrative so that the community can more effectively be viewed as a paradigm for understanding the challenges facing minority communities in their encounter with mainstream society. It sets Jewish involvement within the wider historical, social, economic, political and cultural context, in which it developed, focusing upon political radicalism in Manchester, 1889-1939, and Jewish participation in radical socialism, anarchism, bundism and communism. Nonconformity is here defined in terms of a distancing from both external pressures (e.g. social conformity with the wider community) and internal pressures (e.g. religious beliefs and concerns about communal image). Through the prism of Manchester the chapters will highlight debates surrounding the makeup and impact of pre-First World War involvement; the disproportionate involvement of Jews in radicalism; the nature of Jewish allegiance to communism as an ideological conversion or a convergence of interest and the impact of involvement on Jewish identity, described as ‘Jewish communists’ or ‘communist Jews’.The thesis draws upon new information from the radical Yiddish and English press, revealing the importance of English and foreign influences on pre-war radicalism. Its use of oral testimonies at the Manchester Jewish Museum and elsewhere has revealed in the post-war period, a layering of motivation, commitment and identity. Written chronologically, the periodization of this study enables connections and differences to be drawn. It shows significant discontinuity in involvement and influence between pre and post-First World War radical activity, unlike in London. In Manchester those drawn to communism post-war were almost entirely from an English-born generation. They were more representative of the communist Jew, whose communist identity superseded but did not eradicate their Jewish identity. The thesis shows that conversion to communism was not due to any inherent ethnic characteristics. From 1920-1932 it was a response to the same social and economic factors which influenced non-Jews to communism, but encased in a cultural and historical context. From 1933 that process of conversion continued but was greatly boosted by the desire to fight fascism. The communist led fight against fascism and provision of a popular youth club acted as an attraction to youngsters, who were subsequently influenced in differing degrees or not at all by Marxism. This resulted in different levels of commitment and identification, some of which continued after the war, resulting in the formation of a subculture of Marxist and secular left-wing Jews, who are still seen as nonconformists by the mainstream Jewish community.

Abstract:

Through comparative case studies of Slovakia and Hungary, I explore the competitive relationship between governing parties and radical right parties in post European Union accession parliaments. This research highlights the roles of ethno-nationalism and populism and employs Slovakia’s ethnic Hungarian minority, as manifested through the 2009 Slovak language law and the 2010 Hungarian citizenship law, as a focal point of competition between party groups. I argue that this competition reveals a more influential role than typically attributed to radical right parties. The first half of the article tests these cases against Meguid’s (2008) position, salience, and ownership theory of competition between unequals. The second half of the article analyzes this competition and points to electoral strategies, coalition and opposition policy payoffs, governing party reputations, and each country’s legal landscape as areas affected by the radical right’s presence.

Keywords: Radical right; Hungarian minority; language; citizenship; accommodation, issue ownership, issue salience; competition.

Abstract:
This study is devoted to magnetic field effects on chemical reactions which involve a radical pair with correlated spins (radicals in a "cage"). In the first part, the radical pair theory is described: mechanisms of singlet-triplet mixing, the different interactions inside the pair and a quantum mechanical treatment of the radical pair. The details of the experimental method (nanosecond laser flash photolysis) are reported in the second part. In the third part are shown experimental results obtained on Anthraquinone (AQ) - Hydrogen donors systems:There is no magnetic field effect in homogeneous solution even at a high viscosity. The absotption spectra of the different reaction intermediates are obtained. However a magnetic field effect is put forward when AQ is introduced in SDS micelles which are hydrogen donors. The absorption spectrum of the AQH· semi-quinone radical in "cage" is shown and a mechanism is proposed for its disappearance to generate the AQH-S and AQH2 species. The addition of 9, 10 Dihydroanthracene (DH2) inside the micelle near AQ induces an increase of the magnetic field effect by creation of (AQH· DH·) pairs which diffuse slowly. Fixed radical pairs in a protein matrix were studied in reaction centers of photosynthetic bacteria: in that case, the half-effect field is shifted to low fields when compared to the precedingly described systems

Grilly, Joshua David. "Switchable Solvents for Novel Chemical Processing." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/7461.

Abstract:
This work seeks to develop new solvents for environmentally benign chemical synthesis. Switchable solvents are a new class of compounds that change properties upon the application of some stimulus such as heat, UV light, or pH. We have developed the use of a new solvent, thiirane oxide, that has chemical properties similar to DMSO. Thiirane oxide, however, undergoes facile decomposition to two gases at temperatures above 100 C, which is much lower than the temperature required for removing DMSO. Thus we have a solvent with excellent solvation properties, but with a built-in switch for easier removal. However, thiirane oxide leaves behind sulfurous products which make the reverse reaction to reform the solvent unfeasible. We are also developing the use of another solvent, piperylene sulfone, which is expected to have good solvent properties, yet with decomposition products that can be reacted to reform the solvent. This thesis also details the work to date on piperylene sulfone. Gas-expanded liquids (GXLs) also show promise as a new reaction medium. In order to design solvent systems that take full advantage of this medium, we desire to understand the microstructure of these fluids. To that end, we are using cage reactions to probe solute-solvent and solvent-solvent interactions at the molecular level. This thesis discusses the current research on using cage reactions to probe the structure of GXLs.

Abstract:
A novel free radical-based substitution reaction was developed for grafting aromatic/heteroaromatic compounds to perfluorosulfonic acid polymers (PFSAs). Two proton-exchange membranes perfluorobenzoic acid (PFBA) and perfluorobenzenesulfonic acid (PFBSA)—were synthesized for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells via the free radical-based reaction. The physical properties, in-plane ionic conductivities and fuel cell performance of two membranes were investigated. They exhibited different electrochemical and physical properties, possibly due to the formation of unique dimerized/trimerized structure of –CO2H groups in the PFBA membrane. A free radical-based thermolytic reaction under a high temperature (180 oC)/pressure (1000 psi) condition in the presence of TFA and hydrogen peroxide is first demonstrated. A novel perfluorotetrafluoroaniline (PFTFAn) polymer was synthesized from PFSA and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoroaniline in one step via the thermolytic reaction. After doping H2SO4 in the PFTFAn polymer, a new conjugated acid membrane (H2SO4-doped PFTFAn) was obtained. The H2SO4-doped PFTFAn membrane displayed better chemical stability and mechanical properties than NafionTM due to the removal of –SO3H groups. The second part of this thesis deals with fluoropolymer-based anion-exchange membranes. A new class of coordinated metal/perfluoropolymer type composite membranes were synthesized and characterized for anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). A membrane comprised of perfluoro(phenyl-2,2’:6’,2”-terpyridine) polymer, ZrO(ClO4)2 nanoclusters, and 2,2’:6’,2”-terpyridine displayed the highest conductivity of 23.1 mS/cm at 60 oC. The chemical stability test of composite membrane showed no conductivity loss after refluxing in 7 M KOH solution at 120 oC for 2,200 h. A H+ coordinated cage-shape molecule with a benzyl group (Bn-proton cage) was designed and synthesized as a base-stable anion-exchange group. By employing the free radical-based reaction, Bn-proton cage was grafted to a fluoropolymer to yield a stable anion-conductive membrane under alkaline conditions. The third part of this thesis is our design, synthesis and test of ionic liquids for reversible SO2 absorption. Novel di-cationic ionic liquids (DILs) were designed and synthesized for SO2 absorption. DILs were found to have better SO2 absorption capabilities than mono-cationic ionic liquids (MILs). A chloride-based DIL comprised of two N-methylimidazolium cations and a PEG9 (HO-(CH2CH2O)9-H) chain could reversibly uptake 3.710 mole SO2 per mole DIL under ambient conditions. The anion, temperature and water impact on SO2 absorption in DILs was investigated. Although replacing chloride with triflate or tosylate groups led to a reduced SO2 absorption for the DILs, a high selectivity against CO2 was observed in CO2 absorption test.

Abstract:

In this study two medicinal plant species, namely Galenia africana and Elytropapus rhinocerotis, the former belonging to the family Aizoceae and the latter belonging to the family Asteraceae, have been investigated and different compounds isolated and characterized. Both species are important plants used in traditional medicine in Africa and particularly in South Africa. Flavanoids are secondary metabolites found in plants. They have a protective function against UV radiation and have a defence against invading illnesses due to their important antioxidant activity. Much of the food we eat and some beverages we drink contain flavonoids. The aim of this study was to investigate the electrochemistry of flavanoids isolated from these species.

Abstract:
Echoes from Africa to the world and from the world to Africa seem to tell a single story: Africa fails.Especially political Africa. Among those dashing to help, the commitment of the Church catholic is to be praised but also critically engaged. Can anyone help Africa to modernize by ignoring that in Africa, modernity meant colonization? Then, a question: what is the Church doing, and what can it do qua Church, for Africa? This confronts us with a situation, an action and a critical question. This work, focusing on Togo taken as mirror to the continent, aims at challenging the way the situation is described, at elaborating an answer to the question in hoping to shed a light on the way the action is understood and undertaken. For such an end, it draws on post-colonial studies and on the Cambridge theological movement called Radical Orthodoxy, through the works of J. Milbank and W. Cavanaugh

Abstract:
Single-organ respiratory failure defines chronic respiratory failure. Obesity hypoventilation syndrome is the main cause of chronic respiratory failure and occurs in 4 to 5% of obese patients. Chronic respiratory failure is also the end-stage evolution of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that has a prevalence of 6 to 8% in the adult population. The incidence of these diseases increases so does the incidence of chronic respiratory failure. In this thesis, we will evaluate novel diagnostic and therapeutic modalities that could improve the care of patients with chronic respiratory failure. Regarding diagnostic modalities, we have seen that evaluating the work of breathing with surface parasternal electromyography was an independent prognostic marker in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We have also seen that it was a relevant tool to predict the clinicalefficacy and compliance to home non-invasive ventilation. Regarding therapeutic modalities, we have shown that the use of a semi-automatic mode of non-invasive ventilation had the same efficacy of a standard mode with a shorter length of stay for its setup. We have shown the relevance and feasibility of the use of high-flow oxygen therapy in the home setting whilst it was only used in intensive care units. Finally, we have shown the benefits of continuous positive airway pressure during exertion in patients with tracheobronchomalacia. Regarding patients’ follow-up, we have shown that the use of data from built-in software could predict the onset of a severe exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, we also show that the implementation of tele-medicine in patients with chronic respiratory failure cannot be included in daily clinical practice yet. In this thesis, we have identified novel physiological tools, novel ways to administer treatments and novel follow-up tools that can improve the management of patients with chronic respiratory failure

"Explaining Radical Change in Ghanaian Health Care Policy." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10388/ETD-2015-11-2298.

Full text
Abstract:
The existing literature about the causes of welfare state change, including health care reform, emphasizes stability, yet there is evidence of remarkable changes taking place in welfare systems in much of the developing world. This study analyzes health care reform in Ghana, a country which has experienced significant path-departing changes in just four decades (1957-2003). These changes – the establishment of a National Health Service system with deep (first-dollar) coverage, the introduction of a user-fee system, and the transition to a social health insurance scheme – have been pursued despite key countervailing factors, especially the high political costs associated with them. The study argues that to adequately account for these changes, the policy process should be given special consideration, particularly through the examination of how new policy proposals moved onto the agenda; how they were formulated, adopted, implemented and sustained; and how the reformers managed the entire reform process over time. Based on this analysis, I identified three main interconnected contextual and agential explanatory factors: (a) conjunctural factors, which created windows of opportunity for the changes to occur; (b) policy entrepreneurs, whose leadership, commitment and strategies helped in taking advantage of these opportunities to propel, sponsor, design, adopt, implement and sustain the policy changes; and (c) the concentrated institutional configuration of Ghana, which limited the number and scope of the veto points available to interest groups opposed to the proposed changes. While these three factors contributed to why and how the changes occurred, I identified policy entrepreneurs’ commitment, leadership and strategies, including the feedback effects of those strategies, as the most crucial factors. The study contributes to existing health policy literature by showing how perspectives such as the window of opportunity thesis, the dynamic political process model, the historical institutionalist approach to radical policy change and, finally, the ideational scholarship on framing processes can be combined to enrich our understanding of radical policy change. The study also introduces additional mechanisms of policy change that involve the use of repressive strategies before suggesting some modifications to a number of widely-shared assumptions within the welfare state literature focusing on path dependency, globalization, partisan ideology and vested interests.

McMaster, James Matthew. "Radical self-care : performance, activism, and queer people of color." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/26823.

Full text
Abstract:
Queer people of color in the United States are perpetually under siege politically, psychically, economically, physically, and affectively in the twenty-first century under capitalist white supremacist heteropatriarchy. Radical Self-Care, connects radical artivist performance in Austin, Texas with the theoretical genealogies of queer of color critique, women of color feminism, queer studies, and performance studies in order to propose a program for queer of color survival, sustainment and political revolt. Radical self-care is the holistic praxis that names the confluence of two distinct but inextricable processes developed in the first two chapters of this thesis. In chapter one, I take up the Generic Ensemble Company’s workshop production of What’s Goin’ On? as a case study in order to theorize the ‘performative of sustenance,’ a mechanism of queer worldmaking and queer world sustainment defined by its erotic and utopian affects. Chapter two, through a discussion of reproductive rights activism at the Texas state capitol, reformulates the concept of ‘parrhesia,’ the Socratic practice of ‘free speech’ taken up by Foucault in discussions of the care of the self, into a performance praxis of speaking truth to power with the potential to interrupt hegemonic systems of oppression. The final chapter explicates the ways in which these two mechanisms converge and operate as a dyad in the holistic process of radical self-care through an analysis of Fat: The Play, a devised work that premiered in Austin by and about fat queer femmes. Ultimately, Radical Self- Care aspires to offer queers of color a methodology of queer world sustainment that is also a program of political intervention, grounded in solidarity politics, into those systems of oppression that too often characterize queer of color existence as a project of survival rather than a project of flourishing.

Chan, Ellen Oi Man. "Validation of quality indicators for radical prostatectomy." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/657.

Full text
Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Radical prostatectomy is the surgical procedure performed on men with clinically localized prostate cancer. In recent years, radical prostatectomy quality indicators have been recommended, but the feasibility and validity for many of these listed surgical quality indicators have yet to be examined. We tested the convergent construct validity of these quality indicators by assessing their associations with hospital volume, a variable repeatedly associated with the quality of surgical care, for prostate cancer patients treated with radical prostatectomy. OBJECTIVES: (1) To assess variations in quality indicators by hospital volume; and (2) To investigate whether certain explanatory variables account for some of the variation observed in Objective 1. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study using medical chart review data that had already been collected as part of a parent study. The study population consisted of a stratified random sample of prostate cancer patients diagnosed between 1990 and 1998 in Ontario, who were treated by radical prostatectomy with curative intent within six months of diagnosis (n = 645). The feasibility of using this data to assess a number of quality indicators was explored, and where possible, variables were developed for analysis. Ultimately, detailed analyses were performed for the quality indicators: total blood transfusions of three units or greater, length of hospital stay, and use of non-nerve-sparing surgical technique. RESULTS: Even using high-quality chart data, it was not feasible to evaluate all of the quality indicators that were explored. For blood transfusions of three units or greater, length of hospital stay, and use of non-nerve-sparing surgical technique, worse outcomes were generally apparent with decreasing hospital volume, both before and after adjusting for the effect of explanatory variables. CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated convergent construct validity for three quality indicators (blood transfusions, length of hospital stay, and non-nerve-sparing surgery). If their validity is further demonstrated in future studies, these indicators could be used for quality assessment and could provide feedback to surgeons, surgical department heads, hospital administrators, and quality councils by suggesting areas for quality improvement in surgical care, such that future outcomes can be optimized.

Kulkarni, Girish Satish. "The Quality of Surgical Care for Radical Cystectomy in Ontario from 1992 to 2004." Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1807/16772.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is composed of three studies pertaining to the quality of care for radical cystectomy in Ontario between 1992 and 2004. In the first paper, the associations between provider volume and both operative and overall mortality were assessed. In the second paper, potential factors that could explain the association between volume and outcome were explored. In the final paper, the impact of waiting for cystectomy on survival outcomes was evaluated. Methods: A total of 3296 patients undergoing cystectomy for bladder cancer in Ontario between 1992 and 2004 were identified using the Canadian Institute for Health Information Discharge Abstract Database and the Ontario Cancer Registry. The effects of hospital and surgeon volume on operative mortality and overall survival were assessed using random effects logistic regression and marginal Cox Proportional Hazards modeling, respectively. To elucidate the factors underlying the volume-outcome association, the ability of a number of structure and process of care variables to attenuate the impact of volume was assessed. The effect of waiting for care, from transurethral resection to cystectomy, on overall survival was also assessed using marginal Cox models. Results: Neither hospital nor surgeon volume was significantly associated with operative mortality; however, both were associated with overall mortality. Of the measured structure/process measures, hospital factors caused the greatest attenuation of the volume hazard ratios, albeit to a limited degree. The wait time between the decision for surgery and cystectomy was also significantly associated with overall survival. The impact of delayed care was greatest for patients with lower stage disease. The data suggested a maximum wait time of 40 days for cystectomy. Conclusions: In this thesis, gaps in the quality of care for radical cystectomy in Ontario were identified. Patients treated by low volume hospitals and surgeons or those with long wait times all experienced worse outcomes. Since the underlying measures responsible for provider volume remain elusive, additional work is required to understand what these factors are. Initiatives to decrease wait times, however, are under way in Ontario. Whether these interventions decrease wait times and benefit patients remains to be seen.

WEBBER, COLLEEN ELIZABETH. "Association between Proposed Quality of Care Indicators and Long-Term Outcomes for Men with Localized Prostate Cancer." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/6707.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: We evaluated the validity of a set of 11 quality indicators for prostate cancer radiotherapy and radical prostatectomy by examining their association with outcomes. The selected indicators were: hospital volume, pre-treatment risk assessment, patient consultation with a radiation oncologist, appropriate follow-up care, leg immobilization during radiotherapy, bladder filling during radiotherapy, portal film target localization, use of nerve sparing surgery, operative blood loss, margin status and pelvic lymph node dissection. The selected outcomes were: cause-specific survival, disease-free survival, late morbidity (urinary incontinence, gastrointestinal and genitourinary morbidity), change in node stage from clinical N0 to pathologic N1, and margin status. Methods: Our study sample consisted of 1570 prostate cancer patients who were diagnosed in Ontario between January 1, 1990 and December 31, 1998 who received radical prostatectomy within 6 months of diagnosis (n=646), or curative radiotherapy within 9 months of diagnosis (n=924). Quality of care, outcomes, and potential confounders were measured using patient chart and administrative data. Regression techniques were used to evaluate the associations between quality indicators and relevant outcomes. Results: For patients treated surgically, hospital volume met our test of validity. Patients treated in the lowest volume hospital (0-1 RP/month) were at greater risk of prostate cancer death than patients treated in the highest volume hospitals (7+ RP/month) (HR=5.37 95% CI=1.23-23.46). For patients treated with radiotherapy, leg immobilization and bladder filling during radiotherapy met our test of validity. Patients treated without leg immobilization were more likely to experience urinary incontinence (RR=2.18, 95% CI=1.23-3.87) and genitourinary late morbidities (RR=1.72, 95% CI=1.16-2.56) than patients who received leg immobilization. Patients who were treated with an empty bladder were more likely to experience GU late morbidities (RR=1.98, 95% CI=1.08-3.63) than those treated with a full bladder. The remaining indicators did not meet our test of validity. Conclusion: Our results support the validity of one surgical quality indicator and two radiotherapy quality indicators. Explanations for our non-significant findings, including limited study power, data quality, our definition and measurement of indicators, and a true failure to predict outcome(s) are discussed, and recommendations for further research are presented.

Garvan, Joan Frances. "Maternal ambivalence in contemporary Australia: navigating equity and care." Phd thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/49388.

Abstract:
The thesis argues that an important step in an agenda calling for change is a re-signification of the mother–infant connection from a role to a relationship so as to embed the subject position of the woman-as-mother and enhance her reflexive stance. It identifies intersections between structure and agency as played out in the lives of a small group of women in the early years after the birth of their first child. It contributes to a call for transformational change so as to accommodate dependency while attending to gender equal outcomes. The study is multidisciplinary, bringing together gender, sociology, psychoanalysis and health through a conceptual framework informed by the work of Pierre Bourdieu, Cornelius Castoriadis, Jessica Benjamin and Lois McNay. It locates the work of care through the dependency theory of Eva Feder Kittay and Martha Fineman and the proposition that both the state and the market rely on the family for care. Data are drawn from in-depth and semi-structured interviews with sixteen first-time mothers from Sydney and Canberra. The participants self identified from posters circulated through playgroups and childcare centres from northern, southern, eastern and western suburbs to ensure a diverse sample. What has generally been thought of as a paradox between the rights of women and an assertion of gender difference associated with the maternal body can be recast in terms of tensions. The family as a social unit in the early twenty-first century is marked by tension and change evidenced through the experience of women when they first become mothers. Research that focuses on the early years after the birth of an infant under the banner of the Transition to Parenthood brings to light gendered economic outcomes, maternal stress, depression and a decline in marital satisfaction; in essence a mismatch between expectations and experience that is played out through the sense of self. This is a consequence of a divergence between cultural trends and social structuring with a lack of recognition of both intersubjective dynamics between women-as-mothers and their infants and intrapsychic processes of the self. I cast this dissonance in terms of tensions between macrosocial and microsocial factors. A disjuncture is evident through the ambivalences of these new mothers. In the interview data there is a sense of displaced self, difficulties reconnecting with former lives through the workplace, and often disruptions within families arising from unfulfilled expectations. There is nevertheless a strong and abiding connection with their infants. Motherhood is often characterized as selfless. The needs and interests of the infant/child became paramount and this is seen as a good thing, a moral imperative. Identifications with one’s mother and/or the projected interests of the child or family promote continuity while everyday expectations and practices within families point to change. Women have historically promoted both social and cultural capital through asserting the interests of their families and child/ren. However, attending to these related tasks generally comes at an economic cost and at a cost to their health. There is a significant body of both academic and popular texts reflecting on the experience of being a mother at the microsocial level which is accompanied by a common experience of ambivalence in locating the maternal self. There is evidence of movement for change at the macrosocial level through a rethinking of welfare economics, feminist proponents calling for a public ethic of care, trends towards a gender equal or egalitarian family form, a feminist mothers’ movement, and the emergence of a concept of social care.

Trainor, Johanna Jane. "Australian urban squatters of the 1970s: establishing and living a radical lifestyle in inner‑city Sydney." Thesis, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.13/1420912.

Abstract:
Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
Insensitive urban renewal projects and invasive freeway constructions in the inner‑city of Sydney provoked widespread resistance throughout the 1970s. This thesis traces the interconnections between the highly contentious squatting campaigns that took place in 1973 in Victoria Street, Kings Cross, and the concurrent Glebe anti-expressway movement which opposed the decimation of the historic suburb by the New South Wales state government’s planned radial expressway system. Both of the mobilisations claimed a “right to the city” and demanded the decentralisation of political control over the urban environment, the retention of low-income housing and community participation in the decision-making processes. The Victoria Street occupation demonstrated the power of people over their living conditions and uniquely combined self-help with protest while simultaneously expressing an alternative vision for social organisation in an urban environment. At the same time, the Glebe anti-expressway movement successfully halted the state government’s radial expressway scheme, saving not only housing in the historic suburb of Glebe from demolition but also all of the remaining houses purchased by the Department of Main Roads in the eastern suburbs. These actions together paved the way for the Glebe Estate to become a microcosm of alternative living and politics. This thesis argues that the alternative political and social spaces created by the Victoria Street squatters ignited city-wide squatting campaigns. Drawing on oral history interviews with the participants and personal archival materials, and informed by theories of urban social movements, this research also explores the collective social enterprises and women’s services initiated by the feminist movement and ex-Victoria Street squatters in vacant houses on the Glebe Estate. The study identifies other protest actors who realised the potential of collective empowerment through autonomous political action and who established housing co‑operatives and creative social enterprises in vacant Department of Main Roads properties on the other side of the city in Darlinghurst and council properties in Pyrmont. In contextualising and identifying the interconnectivity of these protest actions, this research presents a case study of a mid-20th century international phenomenon: the ways in which contested urban environments could generate radical experiments in alternative living arrangements, social services and political action which challenged not only conventional government decision-making but also the authority of the state in the realm of daily life.

Porter, Marlien. "A sociological review and application of Illich's theory of iatrogenesis with specific reference to problems concerning the aged." Diss., 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/15799.

Full text
Abstract:
Illich, a critic of the medical profession in industrial societies, researched the "damage done" by the medical establishment on three levels. This study presents an application of Illich's three-level theory of iatrogenesis to a sample of elderly people in old-age homes in and around Pretoria. Fifty in-depth interviews were conducted with old-age home residents. In the focus on clinical iatrogenesis, the aspect of defenceless patients was investigated. With regard to social iatrogenesis, focus was on the interpretation of attitudes revealing an increased medical dependency. Cultural iatrogenesis, which involves the influence of values and norms on thinking patterns, is investigated in terms of the impact of institutionalisation on the autonomy, independence and personal responsibility of residents. Illich's solution to the problem of medicalisation is to be found in the de-bureaucratisation and de-industrialisation of society. Based on the assumptions of critical theory, the emancipation of the individual is suggested as a basis of Illich's proposed structural societal changes

Miller, Jacquelyn. "The persuasive force of exceptionalism : radical democracy, Michel Foucault, and the limits of the modern subject." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/2393.

Full text
Abstract:
Does a radical democratic pluralization of power seriously confront the problem posed to contemporary political thought by the current purchase of Carl Schmitt's political theory? Arguably not, given that the force of his approach lies not in the fascistic or dictatorial concentration of power but in his definition of sovereignty as consisting in exceptionalism, the practice whereby some agency, whether an individual or a group, decides the limits of the polity or decides what or who is fitting and appropriate to the polity and what or who is not, an inherently exclusivist act. While radical democrats attempt to overcome this problem of exclusion by being more inclusive and pluralist, they ultimately affirm this idea that the properly constituted polity, the condition of possibility of progress, emancipation, and pluralism, must be limited, excluding some forms of life while including others. They ultimately oscillate around this issue, arguing for more and more freedom and pluralization, while maintaining the need for limits. The nature of this problem stems from the ontology of the autonomous subject of modernity. In modernity, after nominalism removed God from creation, the human being came to assume disproportionate emphasis as meaning-giving subject, assuming the capacity to unilaterally determine what qualifies for existence and what does not. Just as the subject was conceived as self-sufficient in its own right, the modern polity was also so conceived. Thus, both modem subjectivity and sovereignty assume a solipsistic and monistic ontological form, in addition to being exclusive. Michel Foucault makes a concerted and sustained effort to comprehend and thus stop himself from replicating this problem, an approach far more promising than that of radical democracy, but is limited to the extent that he remains committed to freedom and human creativity and fails to see the onto-theological basis of the problem of modern subjectivity. The failure of his endeavor and that of radical democracy give a powerful indication of the persuasive force of Schmitt's theorization of sovereignty as consisting in the decision on the exception. The violently monistic and exclusive nature of this form of action indicates the need for a serious interrogation of the problem of the modern subject that continues to constitute the modern Western mode of inhabiting this world, limiting all transformations that fail to appreciate its ontological novelty and significance.

Abstract:
This paper interweaves narrativized readings and experiential narratives as personal and cultural resources for counterhegemonic cultural critique within our historical context of globalization and ecological crisis. Framed by perspectives on epistemology, everyday life, and place, these reflections seek to engage and revitalize our notions of community, creativity, and the individual, towards visioning the human art of community as a counternarrative to globalization. Such a task involves confronting the meanings we have come to ascribe to work and economy which so deeply determine our social fabric. Encountering the thought of key 19th and 20th century social theorists ranging from William Morris, Gregory Bateson, and Raymond Williams, to Murray Bookchin, Martin Buber, and Wendell Berry, these reflections mark the indivisible web of culture in the face of our insistent divisions, and further, iterate our innate creativity as the source for a vital, sustainable culture that might reflect, in Bateson’s terms, the pattern that connects.
