Abstract:

As Einstein stated, most fundamental concepts in science, including mathematics, are essentially simple. Students do not have to memorize and us radian measure without understanding the concept. The simple correspondence between the radial angle and the measure of its arc to the measuring of fractional parts of a wheel in terms of the number of spokes furnishes a concrete representation of the concept of radians.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this thesis work, the trapping and luminescence properties of point defects in quartz have been studied. Such properties are used in retrospective dosimetry in order to evaluate the age of archaeological artefacts, the age of geological sediments and the absorbed radiation in the event of nuclear accidents. The study aims at clarifying the specific mechanisms that rule such properties in quartz. Despite being quartz a well-known material and many applications in the aforementioned fields already existing, these are based on empirical methods and a theory that can explain and predict the emissions in quartz in a detailed way is still incomplete. To do so, two luminescence techniques are used, both induced, directly or indirectly, by ionizing radiation such as thermoluminescence (TL) and radioluminescence (RL), and a technique to study paramagnetic defects, or in general unpaired electrons, that is electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). In fact, TL and RL alone are not enough to directly identify the defects that are responsible for such emissions, but it is possible to try to correlate their data with other techniques that can directly observe such defects, such as EPR. By correlating TL and EPR data, germanium related centres with trapped electrons, specifically [GeO4]- and [GeO4/Li+]0, have been identified as responsible for the TL emissions known as the peaks at 110 °C and 375 °C. At the same time, it was also possible to identify an anomaly in the thermal stability of one of these germanium centres, responsible for the 110 °C peak, confirming the correlation of the two signals, TL and EPR, but also raising new potential critical issues in the applications for dating and dosimetry. Through EPR studies, new unreported paramagnetic centres have been identified and their thermal stability has been characterized. One of them has been assigned to a centre compensated by interstitial hydrogen, while the others are still lacking a precise labelling. The thermal stability of titanium and aluminium related centres has also been studied, in search of possible correlations with luminescence properties. Some proposals have been advanced, but further studies are needed for this last specific point. Through RL and TL, it has been shown how the emission wavelengths in quartz are very sample dependent and how they are influenced by the thermal history of the studied sample. Specifically, through wavelength resolved TL it was possible to show how the properties of the studied samples do not agree with some published theoretical models. The study was able to propose an alternative, although so far just at a qualitative level. Such proposal claims that there may be spatial correlations between point defects in quartz, allowing specific direct recombination with no passage in the conduction and valence bands of the material. Despite this study is far from having found a complete description of quartz behaviour, new important steps have been added to the huge specific literature, contributing to a deeper comprehension of the luminescence properties of this material.

Abstract:
Pagrindinės to priežastys – žmonių trūkumas bei lėšų stygius. „Žinių radijas“ vis dar neturi savireklamos specialisto, todėl dažnai jo funkcijas atlieka reklamos skyrius ar net pats „Žinių radijo“ vadovas. Dabartinė „Žinių radijo“ komunikacijos politika labiau nukreipta į įmonių vadovus – jie kur kas daugiau žino apie „Žinių radiją“ (žino apie pasikeitusį logotipą, bei atnaujintą tinklelį, dažniau girdi cituojamą „Žinių radiją“). The aim of this work was to view it not as the means of communication but the organization seeking its profit. The main task was to analyze the main possible means of communication on radio stations and their effectiveness on the radio station „News Radio“. After having interviewed the representatives of „News Radio“ (during a qualitative analysis) it became clear that the aims of communication depends on a season. In autumn after presenting a new network self-advertisement strategy is usually aimed at advertising of the program. In the middle of the season more attention is paid more attention is paid at supporting the image of „News Radio“. During a quantitative analysis which aim was to make surveys of the present means of communication and their effectiveness it became obvious that these means are ineffective. Therefore, we can make a conclusion that the present „News Radio“communication policy is targeted at the executives of enterprises. The effective communication channels should be considered those which reach the whole objective audience (the listeners of managing or non- managing duties). In this case those who were interviewed stated that the most information about „News Radio“ was received from its page on internet. Advertisement of 'NEWS Radio' is mostly seen in press.

Esta dissertaÃÃo se baseia no artigo On the spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami Operator on a Non-Compact Surface" de Takao Tayoshi ( Comm. By Kinjir^o Kunugi, M. J. A., Feb. 12,1971).
In this work we study the Laplace-Beltrami operator defined on Riemannian manifolds. In addition to the spectrum of such an operator, we also present some of its properties, such as the fact that this operator is self-adjoint and non-negative. Our main goal is to analyze the existence of eigenvalues for the Laplace-Beltrami operator, under certain conditions, for exemple, surfaces that are complete graphs of radial functions, which is a revolution non-compact surfaces. This dissertation is based on the article "On the spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami Operator on the Non-Compact Surface"of Takao Tayoshi(Comm. By Kinjiro Kunugi, MJA, Feb. 12, 1971). To perform this work were introduced basics concepts of functional analysis, with emphasis on the study of Hilbert spaces and the spectral theory of self-adjoint operators, Riemannian Geometry in surfaces and Partial Differential Equations, in particular results for elliptic operators of second order. In addition, were needed some results for advanced mathematics.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the common failure modes of the diesel engine turbochargers is high-cycle fatigue of the turbine-wheel blades. Mistuning of the blades due to the casting process is believed to contribute to this failure mode. A laser vibrometer is used to characterize mistuning for a population of turbine wheels through the analysis of the blade-response to piezo-speaker induced noise. The turbine-wheel design under investigation is radial and is typically used in 6-12L diesel engine applications. FRFs and resonance frequencies are reviewed and summarized. The study includes test results for a paddle wheel that represents a perfectly tuned system and acts as a reference. A discrete mass-spring model is developed for the paddle wheel and the model suitability is tested against measured data. Density randomization is applied to model mistuning in the turbine wheels. Frequency mistuning and relative amplitude modelling for blade modes is found in good agreement with the data, however the mass-spring model over-predicts amplitude-amplification factors for a population of radial-turbine wheels, especially with regard to hub-dominant modes. A continuous twisted-blade model is developed in Matlab using finite-element techniques. Experimental data is shown to have good agreement with the twisted-blade model. Whitehead’s maximum amplitude-amplification prediction using RMS value for a tuned amplitude value is calculated, and the turbine-wheel response is found to fit within the theoretical limit. Different mistuning patterns are studied using the twisted-blade model. Maximum and minimum response patterns are identified and recommended.

Zoric, Branislav. "Modelling the influence of stocking on longitudinal and radial variation in wood properties of Pinus radiata on a warm Northland site." Thesis, University of Canterbury. School of Forestry, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/2564.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to determine how final stocking influences tree growth and radial and longitudinal variation in wood properties at a Pinus radiata D. Don plantation located at one of the warmest forest sites in New Zealand, Forsyth Downs forest in Northland. This thesis addressed both the effect of stocking on stand basal area, height, diameter and branch diameter and the effect of stocking on wood properties microfibril angle (MFA), module of elasticity and density. Finally, how ring width influences wood properties and whether this variable accounts for the treatment effects was investigated. Stocking, height and ring number and all interactions between these variables significantly affected ring width. Ring width by itself was significant as a predictor of density, but when it was combined with other class level variables it was insignificant (i.e. does not account for treatment effects), and it did not add anything to a model with only class effects. There was a significant impact of ring number on density while ring width was insignificant in the same model. MFA was significantly affected by ring width, height and ring number in the tree, and all interactions, apart from the three way interaction, but not by stocking. Ring width was significant in the MFA model both by itself and when it was combined with other variables. Ring width accounted for the stocking effect. The best model of MOE included the class level effects of stocking, height and ring number within the tree, and all interactions between these variables, and ring width, as a continuous variable. While there was a significant effect between stockings this was relatively weak compared to the other main effects. Ring width largely accounted for the effect of stocking, but not that of ring number, or height.

Abstract:
Abstract This study investigates carpal kinematics during a wrist Radial/Ulnar deviation motion using high speed video data acquisition. A cadaver forearm was stabilized allowing unconstrained excursion of the wrist for passive range of motion. Capitate/radius and 3rd metacarpal/radius angles were calculated to determine which measurement would be best for determining global wrist angle. The average difference in angle between the capitate and third metacarpal was 1.3 ± 1.3 degrees with a maximum difference of 5.0 degrees. Hence, the capitate-third metacarpal joint can be considered ridged. The proximal wrist joint (R/L angle) contributed 15.1 degrees to global wrist radial ulnar deviation and the midcarpal joint (C/L angle) contributed 20.6 degrees to global wrist radial ulnar deviation (43.0% and 55.8%, respectively, of the 36.4° total wrist ROM). Radio-scaphoid angles averaged 16.8 degrees (46.5% of the 36.4° total wrist ROM). The radio-lunate joint and the capito-lunate joint contribute equally to global wrist radial ulnar deviation. This new combination of motion analysis and 3D reconstructions of CT images affords a high speed, dynamic analysis of kinematics. It shows that normal carpal kinematics, during wrist radial/ulnar deviation, does not have an instantaneous screw axis (ISA) fixed in or limited to the capitate. In addition, the ISA data provides evidence that translational motion is a real and measurable component of normal carpal motion. This would change the understanding of carpal kinematics from previous studies, which suggested that the center of rotation was fixed in the capitate.

Abstract:
The emergence and evolution of relative whirling motions in the exducer region of an Inward Flow Radial Turbine is discussed. Existing models of relative motion are reviewed and expanded by consideration of the effect of centrifugal forces differences arising from velocity gradients. It is shown that the often observed phenomenon of outlet overturn/underturn is inherent to the use of straight-helix exducers. Explicit mathematical relationships between exit velocities and radius are not available. If, however, such relationships could be considered linear, it is shown that two new reference radii may be identified such that the net outlet properties can be measured or computed at these locations as lump parameters. These radii are different from the often used hydraulic radius. The new models and reference radii are verified using published experimental data.

Abstract:
A TOBI (tangential on board injection) or preswirl system is a critical component of a high pressure turbine cooling delivery system. Its efficient performance and characterization are critical because the blade and disk life depend on the accuracy of delivering the required flow at the correct temperature and pressure. This paper presents a TOBI flow discharge coefficient validation process applied to a low radius radial configuration starting from a 1D network flow analysis to a 3D frozen rotor CFD analysis of the rotor cooling air delivery system. The analysis domain commences in the combustor plenum stationary reference frame, includes the TOBI, transitions to the rotating reference frame as the flow travels through the rotating cover plate orifice, continues up the turbine disk into the slot bottom blade feed cavity, and terminates in the turbine blade. The present effort includes matching a 1D network model with 3D CFD results using simultaneous goal-matching of pressure predictions throughout the circuit, defining test rig pressure measurements at critical “non-disturbing” locations for quanification of pressure ratio across the TOBI, and finally comparing the TOBI flow coefficient resulting from stationary cold flow tests with what was obtained from the 3D CFD results. Analysis of the results indicates that the discharge coefficient varies with pressure ratio and that the traditional method of using a constant discharge coefficient extracted from a cold flow test run under choked conditions leads to over-predicting turbine cooling flows. TOBI flow coefficient prediction for the present study compares well with the stationary data published by author researchers for the configuration under investigation, and the process described in this paper is general for any TOBI configuration.

Abstract:
This paper presents an investigation of the dimension variations on modular magnetorheological (MR) valve with meandering flow path structure. The size variations including the inner and outer radius of the valve at radial path. The first step is conducting FEMM (Finite Element Method Magnetics) to find out the density of magnetic flux on MR valve. The obtained magnetic field density is applied to steady state models to predict pressure drop. To determine the best configuration, pressure drop and operation range are the objective of the selection process. Based on the results, MR valve with 2.75 mm inner radius radial and 9 mm outer radius radial was chosen as the best MR valve design if compared to the other MR valve designs. The results obtained from the MR valve with 2.75 mm inner radius radial and 9 mm outer radius radial are 1.79 Mpa for the pressure drop and 6.68 for the operational range. Abstract:
Abstract Use of the critical radius for radial heat conduction in thermal insulation systems has been widely reported in the literature. When it is desirable to increase heat dissipation, this critical radius can be used in a definitive manner to maximize the heat dissipation. However, if it is desirable to decrease heat gain or heat loss, the critical radius only serves as a necessary condition, but it is not sufficient. To address design of such thermal systems, a new crossover radius is introduced. A crossover radius is a radius greater than the critical radius and is defined such that the heat transfer with the corresponding amount of insulating material is equal to that of the bare thermal system. Both cylindrical and spherical systems are considered.

Abstract:
Abstract This study presents a reservoir simulation framework to investigate the oil production uplift performance of Radial Jet Drilling (RJD) technology for a naturally fractured diatomite reservoir undergoing waterflooding. The findings from the study can help better design a field trial and plan Surveillance, Analysis and Optimization (SA&O) activities. The framework allows for the flexible definition of various parameters that control the topology of the RJD well (including number penetrated layers, number of radials per layer, and radial segment length) as well as the pressure drop along the radial segment (including the segment roughness and hydrodynamic diameter). The framework relies on advanced wellbore modeling capabilities that compute the pressure drops inside the well; this allows for the consideration of radial segment collapse whenever the radial segment pressure is below a radial collapse pressure. The simulated behavior relied on a dual porosity dual permeability (DPDK) reservoir model that had been history-matched for primary depletion and waterflooding over a cumulative 72-year period. The RJD well oil production performance is evaluated over a 16-year period controlled with a bottomhole pressure constraint. The model is calibrated to representative type curves in the absence of radials (perforations only case) and in the presence of radials for a specified topology. Once the model has been calibrated, 162 simulation cases are considered to evaluate the sensitivity of the oil production uplift to various model parameters and operational conditions. Radial segment length, radial collapse pressure and number of penetrated layers showed the greatest impact on oil production uplift. Increasing radial segment length and number of penetrated layers and decreasing the radial collapse pressure led to an increase in oil production uplift. We introduced a cumulative radial segment length metric that accounts for the impact of number of penetrated layers, number of radials per layer, and radial segment length. For a fixed cumulative radial segment length, configurations with a higher number of penetrated layers and a lower number of radials per layer led to a higher oil production uplift. The simulation tool and framework developed can be used to assess the potential benefit of the RJD technology, including risks arising from radial segment collapse. For all radial collapse pressure scenarios, a gentle drawdown strategy proved to be the most consistent in terms of oil production uplift performance. Production performance monitoring (e.g., via dedicated test separators) can help identify major radial collapse events as evidenced by discontinuous trends in the oil production rate, gas/oil ratio, and/or water cut.
