Abstract:
The management of wild rabbits is a vexing problem worldwide. In countries such as Australia and New Zealand, wild rabbits are regarded as serious pests to agriculture and the environment, while in many European countries they are considered an important hunting resource, and are a cornerstone species in Mediterranean ecosystems, modifying habitats and supporting important predator populations such as the Iberian lynx. The introduction of two viral diseases, myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease, as biological control agents in Australia has been met favourably, yet their spread in southern Europe threatens natural rabbit populations. Despite this, scientists with very different goals still work together with a common interest in understanding rabbit biology and epidemiology. Australia's War Against Rabbits uses rabbit haemorrhagic disease as an important case study in understanding how animal populations adapt to diseases, caused in this case by an RNA virus. Looking at rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD) in an ecological framework enables insights into both virus and rabbit biology that are relevant for understanding other emerging diseases of importance to humans. This book provides up-to-date information on recent advances in areas ranging from virus structure and disease mechanics through to the sociological implications of using biological control agents and the benefits to the economy and biodiversity. It is a compelling read for wildlife disease researchers, wildlife managers, rabbit biologists, people working in the public health and education sectors, and landholders and farmers with experience or interest in RHD.

Baloh, Robert W. Bárány’s Life in Uppsala and His Work with Lorente de Nó. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190600129.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
Lorente de Nó came to Uppsala, Sweden, in 1924 to work with Robert Bárány, with the goal of studying the central nervous system pathways of the vestibular nystagmus response. Bárány’s 1907 book described a patient with a lesion involving the reticular formation of the pons close to the abducens nucleus who could generate only the slow phase of nystagmus. With stimulation, the patient’s eyes slowly deviated to one side and became pinned. The patient also had a loss of voluntary eye movements. Bárány concluded that there must be separate centers in the brainstem for the production of the slow and fast phases of nystagmus. He speculated that the center for generating fast phases was in the reticular substance next to the abducens nucleus and that this component was under the influence of cortical control. Nó would go on to perform studies of these central pathways for generating nystagmus in rabbit.

King, Carolyn M., Grant Norbury, and Andrew J. Veale. Small mustelids in New Zealand: invasion ecology in a different world. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198759805.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter reviews the ecology of the three species of small mustelids introduced into New Zealand: the ferret (Mustela furo), the stoat (M. erminea) and the weasel (M. nivalis), for biological control of rabbits. New Zealand offers a mosaic of environments totally different from those in which the three species evolved, including a diminishing array of endemic fauna especially vulnerable to mammalian predators. Mustelids in New Zealand display significant adaptive flexibility in diet, habitat selection, co-existence, dispersal, body size, population biology and predatory impact, with results contrasting with those observable in their northern-hemisphere ancestors. These evolutionary and ecological responses by mustelids to new opportunities are of considerable interest to evolutionary ecologists, especially those interested in competition and predator-prey relationships. Likewise, the need to protect New Zealand’s native fauna has stimulated extensive research on alternative options for mitigating the effects of invasive predators, applicable to pest management problems in other countries.
