Reconnaissant l'importance historique d'une oeuvre nee a la veille de l'independance de l'inde et poursuivie un demi-siecle apres, constatant que la critique n'a pas entierement rendu justice a r. K. Narayan, notre etude se propose de demontrer que son message qualifie de 'simple' cache complexite et sophistication. Le mode oblique et ironique ainsi que le non-dit font partie d'une pratique discursive qui s'inscrit dans le courant postcolonial. Tout en exposant clairement la forte identite culturelle de son pays et celebrant l'immense reservoir de sens qu'il represente, l'auteur toujours attentif au detail denonce les abus de pouvoir minant les membres de la petite communaute d'inde du sud imaginee a partir de ce qu'il observe au quotidien. Dans un premier temps nous presentons l'oeuvre comme produit du fait colonial et montrons comment elle s'insere dans les grands courants d'idees du debut du siecle, pourquoi l'auteur etablit un remarquable equilibre entre imitation et resistance aux structures de pensee dominantes. La chronologie de l'oeuvre donne son sens a l'evolution du discours : denonciation indirecte des abus de pouvoir dans une societe de colonises au debut de l'oeuvre puis resistance a l'emergence de nouvelles formes d'imperialisme et condamnation de tout rapport de domination. La derniere partie analyse la portee du paradoxe exprime dans la position feministe de narayan et a travers la richesse de ses portraits feminins, la determination de l'auteur a articuler les nouveaux enjeux crees par la prise de conscience de l'individualite des femmes indiennesTaking into account the historical importance of a literary work started just before the independence of india and continued fifty years after, our essay will attempt to show the complexity and sophistication of narayan's message often qualified as 'simple' by a kind of literary criticism which has overlooked the undertones of the author's writing. He makes a constant use of irony, oblique angles, and implicit statements, all of which are part of the discursive practice of postcolonial literature. While all along narayan clearly states the strong cultural identity of his country and celebrates its huge and significant potential, at the same time through meaningful but inconspicuous details he denounces the abusers of power oppressing the members of the small south indian community he imagined, based on his daily observations. In the first part of our study, we present narayan's work as an outcome of the colonial situation, show how it is linked to the main ideological concerns of the beginning of the century and why the writer remarkably balances mimicry and resistance to the prevaling currents of thought. The chronology of the novels especially gives its full meaning to the evolution of narayan's discourse : first, he obliquely condemns the strategies of power oppressing colonized people, then he opposes cultural resistance and subversion to the new forms of imperialism to finally condemn all aspects of domination, and this is the focus of our second part. In the third part we analyse the impact of the paradox expressed in narayan's feminism and through the diversification of his female portraits, the writer's dedication to articulate the values at stake in the newly acquired individual consciousness of indian women

Ce travail porte sur l'œuvre de R. K. Narayan à la croisée de deux civilisations. L’écriture de cet auteur, qui reflète les aspects sociaux et culturels de son appartenance première, se métisse avec les apports anglo-saxons. Toutefois l'analyse montre que les romans malgudiens rejettent implicitement le monde britannique pour privilégier la voix du passe védique. La structure esthétique de cette fiction est au diapason : les techniques narratives de R. K. Narayan puisent dans le fonds ancien de la théorie sanscrite du Rasa. Ce système artistique met l'accent sur l'identification, l'empathie et le rôle du récipiendaire. Cette dimension spécifique justifie l'emploi de la théorie de la réception dont les concepts sont apparentés pour l'étude de la littérature indo-anglaise de R. K. Narayan. Le métissage s'opère alors également au niveau des instances de lecture, permettant la découverte de l'autreThis dissertation deals with R. K. Narayan's novels that are between two civilizations. His work, which reflects the social and cultural aspects of India, is also cross-fertilized because of the use of the English language. However, further analysis shows that the malgudian novels implicitly reject British culture and put the emphasis on the past and on Vedic thought. The aesthetics of these novels match this aspect: R. K. Narayan's narrative techniques are rooted in the field of rasa theory which emphasizes reader's participation and empathy. This explains why it seems logical to use the tools of the modem reception theory to study his work since its tenets are very similar to rasa. Thus we can see that the cross-fertilization can also take place during the reading process which enables every reader to discover and appreciate an exogenous culture

Nas suas histórias, encontramos astrólogos, encantadores de serpentes, crianças destemidas, eremitas – uma multiplicidade de personagens que cativam o leitor, através de uma combinação única de realismo e fantasia, de sabedoria e humor.
Não obstante o apelo óbvio da escrita de Narayan, em Portugal não há ainda traduções das obras deste escritor, pelo que nos propusemos selecionar alguns dos seus contos para tradução. Este trabalho de projeto procura, portanto, explicitar as principais questões levantadas durante esse processo de tradução, fazendo o devido enquadramento teórico, quer em termos da teoria da tradução (no geral e, especificamente, no que toca à tradução literária), quer em termos da contextualização do autor, no âmbito das literaturas pós-coloniais de expressão inglesa; ABSTRACT:R. K. Narayan is a significant name for English literature. Born in India, but writing in English, this author succeeded in creating an imaginary world, centered on a fictional, typically Indian, little town. Going through his tales, we come across astrologers, snake charmers, high-spirited children, hermits – a variety of characters who captivate the reader, through a unique blend of reality and folklore, wisdom and humor.
Despite the noticeable appeal of Narayan’s stories, none of his work is yet translated into Portuguese; hence, we have decided to select and translate some of his short-stories. This project, therefore, aims to clarify the main issues arising from that translation process, offering the necessary theoretical frames (concerning translation theory in general, and particularly literary translation), as well as contextualization of the author within post-colonial English literatures.

Dans les annees trente, les evenements politiques qui se deroulent en inde affectent les ecrivains indiens d'expression anglaise. Mulk raj anand, raja rao et r. K. Narayan publient alors leurs premiers romans. Avec le recul que permet le passage du temps, il apparait aujourd'hui que ces romans, salues lors de leur parution comme des descriptions objectives de l'inde profonde, ne furent en fait qu'un moyen, pour chacun des trois ecrivains, d'exprimer ses convictions politiques. Apres une presentation des ecrivains, des antecedants de la litterature indo-anglaise et du contexte politico-social de l'epoque, trois parties sont consacrees a la presentation des anglais en inde, a celle des indiens et a la contribution litteraire qui fut celle de ces romans a l'ideal revolutionnaire indien. En conclusion, il est montre que les sept romans etudies portent temoignage de l'esprit d'une epoque bien precise plus q'ils ne font preuve de nouveaute stylistiquePolitical events taking place in india in the thirties directly affect the works of indian novelists writing in english. Today, it would seem that these novels, acclaimed at the time of publication as the first unbiased descriptions of india were exponents of the authors' political convictions. The presentation of each of the theree novelists, of the indoanglian literary movement and of the socio-political context of the day is followed by three main parts dealing with the literary presentation of the english in india, of the indian themselves and of the literary contribution of the novels under study to the revolutionary movement. It is shown in the conclusion that the seven novels studied in this work bear witness to the spirit of the time more than they prove the literary innovations they have too long been regarded as

Esta tese consiste em uma tradução anotada do romance O Guia (1958), de R. K. Narayan. A tese apresenta uma discussão crítica de aspectos práticos e suposições teóricas subjacentes ao processo de tradução. Nas últimas décadas, a área de estudos da tradução expandiu-se e apropriou-se de vários significados, e atualmente vai muito além da dimensão textual. O conceito de tradução hoje engloba não só aspectos linguísticos como também questões culturais e históricas. As notas, portanto, dividem-se em duas categorias distintas: a) notas em português sobre expressões e palavras culturalmente específicas, que tem por objetivo fazer uma ponte entre barreiras culturais em relação ao leitor brasileiro, suplementando o texto traduzido; e b) notas sobre o processo de tradução como tal, discutidas em relação ao processo de análise e tomada de decisões do tradutor. Obras traduzidas desempenham um papel fundamental na propagação de tendências literárias no mundo todo, como demonstra o recente influxo de obras dos chamados escritores da diáspora a partir de regiões antigamente sob domínio colonial europeu. R. K. Narayan foi o primeiro escritor de língua inglesa profissional bem sucedido na Índia moderna, e abriu caminho para a literatura Indiana de língua inglesa contemporânea. O objetivo da tese se desdobra em dois eixos. Em um nível pragmático, o propósito principal é oferecer uma tradução informativa de O Guia para o meio acadêmico brasileiro. As notas explicam as escolhas feitas pelo tradutor e esclarecem as diversas questões culturais envolvidas na tradução. Em um nível analítico, o objetivo é pesquisar a dinâmica do processo tradutório, bem como os elementos que interagem nas tomadas de decisão e subsequente re-estruturação do texto na língua de chegada. bloco tem dois capítulos: A Cena Literária, um estudo introdutório sobre a vida do autor e contexto de sua obra, e A Cena nos Estudos de Tradução, que aborda alguns pressupostos teóricos, privilegiando a tradução orientada para o texto de partida. O segundo bloco, O Processo, apresenta a análise da tradução e o conjunto de estratégias empregadas. Este bloco tem dois capítulos: Notas sobre Aspectos Culturais, que traz a análise dos dois tipos de notas e Notas sobre o Processo de Tradução, o qual se compõe das seguintes seções: O Nivel Textual apresenta uma leitura crítica do romance, com ênfase na análise literária do processo de tradução, e também discute a presença da ironia e o papel do narrador. As seções O Nivel Sintático e O Nível Lexical complementam a discussão. O resultado final da pesquisa, a tradução anotada para fins acadêmicos, compõe o terceiro bloco. A tese é uma contribuição aos estudos de tradução no meio acadêmico brasileiro.This dissertation consists of an informative annotated translation of R. K. Narayan’s novel The Guide (1958). The dissertation provides a critical discussion of practical aspects and underlying theoretical assumptions to the translating process. The field of translation studies has in the last decades taken on many meanings and now encompasses realms beyond the textual dimension. Translation today is as much about the translation of cultural and historical contexts and concepts as it is about language itself. The notes therefore fall into two distinct categories: a) notes in Portuguese about culturally specific phrases and words, which aim at bridging cross cultural barriers to the Brazilian reader and supplement the text translated; b) notes about the translation process itself discussed in the light of the process of analysis and decision making. Translations have played a critical role in spurring literary trends all over the world, as the recent influx of the so called "diaspora writers" from European colonial backgrounds attest. R. K. Narayan was modern India's first successful professional writer in English and cleared the path for contemporary Indian fiction in English. The objective of the dissertation is twofold. On a pragmatic level, the main objective is to provide the Brazilian academy with an informative translation of The Guide. The annotations are used to explain the choices made by the translator, and to clarify the manifold cultural issues involved in the translation. On an analytical level, the objective is to research the dynamics of the translation process, observing the nature of the elements that interact in the moment of the translator's decision and in the subsequent restructuring of the translated text. The dissertation is divided into three major blocks, The Premises, the Process and the Product. The first block contains two chapters: The Literary Scene, an introductory study of Narayan’s life and context of writing and The Translation Studies Scene, which deals with selected theoretical points and states the preference for a source text oriented approach. The second block, The Process, is the analysis of the translation of the novel itself and the set of strategies employed. This block has two chapters: Notes on Cultural Aspects presents an analysis of the two kinds of notes and Notes on the Translation Process, which is divided into the following sections. The Textual Level presents a close reading of the novel, points out to the importance of the literary analysis to the translation process, as well as discusses instances of irony and the role of the narrator. The sections Syntactic Level and Lexical Level complement the discussion. The final result of the work, the annotated translation itself, which is intended for academic research purposes only, is presented in the third block. The dissertation aims at contributing to the ongoing Brazilian studies of translation.

Diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou a vyhodnocením současného stavu vedení lidí ve společnosti STUZAM, spol. s r. o.. V rámci vedení lidí jsou zpracovány i další oblasti a to motivace a stimulace pracovníků, hodnocení pracovníků a odměňování pracovníků. V rámci výzkumu jsem analyzoval a vyhodnotil názory zaměstnanců a managementu na oblast vedení pracovníků nadřízeným, motivování zaměstnanců nadřízeným, hodnocení zaměstnanců nadřízeným a odměňování zaměstnanců nadřízeným. Na základě zjištění z výzkumu jsem stanovil praktická doporučení ke zlepšení stávajícího stavu.

L’adaptation existe depuis les débuts du cinéma. Dès lors, le nombre de versions filmiques d’œuvres littéraires ne cesse de croître et l’adaptation reste au cœur de la production cinématographique partout dans. Toutefois nous constatons que l’adaptation se trouve dans une situation quelque peu paradoxale. Ce qui motive sa conception est également à l’origine de la majeure partie des critiques. D’une part, le bénéfice économique est évident. La notoriété d’un roman à succès garantit un public nombreux. D’autre part, le contexte créatif se révèle difficile car, du point de vue ontologique, l’adaptation préserve la comparaison traditionnelle en s’appuyant sur un paradigme oppositionnel des arts où le film se doit de se justifier face au texte source. Se situant à la croisée des arts, l’adaptation focalise un débat sur une hiérarchie notionnelle des arts où la narration à travers des images serait toujours perçue comme inférieure aux autres formes. Dans cette thèse, nous étudions ce phénomène dans le contexte de la résurgence de la fantasy lors des années 2000. Ce fait culturel du monde anglophone atteindra un niveau inattendu au cinéma avec le succès des adaptations des romans de J. R. R. Tolkien et de J. K. Rowling tandis que la réception des versions filmiques des œuvres de C. S. Lewis peut paraître mitigée. À partir de ces constats, nous nous interrogeons parallèlement sur le processus et le produit de l’adaptation en plaçant notre corpus au centre du débat à travers une approche descendante de comparaison. Nous espérons ainsi pouvoir apporter quelques éléments de réflexion sur l’engouement du public pour ces histoires et sur l’adaptation comme domaine d’étudeAdaptation has been a part of cinema since its very beginning. Since then, the number of film versions of literary works which appear on screen has never ceases to increase and adaptation is still at the heart of cinematic production around the world. Adaptation actually exists in a rather paradoxical situation. What motivates its conception is also the source of the majority of criticism against it. On one hand, the economic advantage is clear. The fame of a popular novel guarantees a large audience. On the other hand, its creative context can prove to be difficult since ontologically adaptation serves to preserve the traditional comparison based on an oppositional paradigm of the arts where the film has to justify itself in front of the source text. Standing at a crossroads between the arts, adaptation is the focus of a debate on a notional hierarchy within the arts where narration through images could still be perceived as inferior compared to other forms.We wanted to study this phenomenon within the context of the resurgence of fantasy witnessed in the 2000’s in this thesis. In the English-speaking world this cultural event reached an unexpected level with the success of the adaptations of J. R. R. Tolkien and J. K. Rowling’s novels while the film versions of C. S. Lewis’ works were less well received. With these points in mind, we consider the process and the product of adaptation in order to situate our corpus in the debate through a top down approach of comparison. We thus hope to bring some elements of reflections on the craze for these stories and the domain of adaptation studies

Diploma thesis covers the topic about different attitudes to DCF valuation. The first part is an introduction into CAPM theory and a multifactor French-Fama model. This part also indicates different views on financial assets and analyzes an issue of setting discount rates, especially the risk-free rate and equity risk premium. The second part of this paper applies the theory into valuation of Microsoft, GAP and Telefónica O2. There are elaborated forecasts of the financial statements and free cash flows (FCFCE, FCFU), the discount rate composition and analyses of the factors HML and SMB. At the end, there are performed various valuations, which results are discussed together with a development of real market prices.

Ce memoire presente l'etude experimentale de reactions neutre-neutre (molecule-radical et radical-radical) sur un grand intervalle de temperature allant de la temperature ambiante jusqu'a des temperatures extremement basses de l'ordre de 10 k. Ce type de reaction est tres important d'un point de vue astrochimique, dans l'etude d'atmospheres planetaires et dans la confrontation avec la theorie. La technique c. R. E. S. U. (cinetique de reaction en ecoulement supersonique uniforme) permettant d'avoir un ecoulement uniforme de temperature tres basse et la technique plp-lif (pulse de photolyse laser-fluorescence induite par laser) ont permis les premieres etudes de reactions avec les radicaux cn, oh et ch a des temperatures aussi basses que 13 k. Les coefficients de vitesse des reactions de cn avec o#2 et de cn avec nh#3 croissent de facon monotone quand la temperature diminue. Ces mesures confrontees a la theorie montrent que l'on doit inclure, en plus des interactions a longue portee, celles a courte portee. Les premieres etudes de la reaction du radical oh avec trois butenes sont utiles pour une meilleure comprehension des pollutions de l'atmosphere terrestre. La forte dependance negative en temperature du coefficient de vitesse de la reaction du radical oh avec hbr a fait apparaitre une sous estimation du coefficient de vitesse aux temperatures regnant dans la stratosphere terrestre. Ceci a une incidence dans le cycle de l'ozone. Les premieres mesures du coefficient de vitesse de la reaction de oh avec no en fonction de la temperature et de la pression sont utiles dans l'etude d'atmospheres planetaires, notamment celle de la terre. Les premieres etudes de reactions entre le radical ch et plusieurs molecules et radicaux neutres indiquent que ch reagit rapidement a tres basse temperature. A little-known chamber work by Benjamin Britten is the dramatic cantata Phaedra, op.93, for mezzo-soprano and small orchestra. Among his chamber works, the solo cantata was a musical form used only once by Britten, thus making Phaedra unique among Britten's oeuvre. Britten chose a genre that flourished in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the cantata - as a vehicle for the story of Phaedra. He employs clear allusions to Baroque music in Phaedra by the use of harpsichord and continuo in the recitatives, ornamentation, and word painting. The text for Britten's setting of Phaedra is a translation of Jean Racine's Phedre by the American poet Robert Lowell. From Lowell's complete play, Britten extracted Phaedra's key speeches that deal with her three confessions of incestuous love for her stepson, Hippolytus. These monologues are set in a series of recitatives and arias that make up the entirety of this chamber cantata. In order to gain complete understanding of Phaedra, this document will begin with an investigation into the historical background of Racine's Phedre and the conventions of French tragedy from which it arose. Lowell's translation method will then be explored in comparison to Racine's play. In turn, Britten's extractions from Lowell's translation will be examined. Further, the baroque elements of the cantata and the compositional ideas inherited by Britten from Henry Purcell will be included. Finally, there will be an inspection of the character of Phaedra and Britten's interpretation through orchestration and melodic choices. Investigation into the background of Phaedra's character through Racine's play and Lowell's translation along with Britten's dramatic interpretation through music is necessary for complete comprehension of her mental state and underlying thoughts in order to bring about an emotionally accurate portrayal of the role. Britten himself labeled Phaedra a "dramatic cantata." Therefore, the drama and its text-musical relationships must be uncovered.

Problem – The expansion of global trade and supply chain integration has put great emphasison logistics, particularly in the intermediary sector, freight forwarders. Whilst in developedcountries freight forwarders benefit from competitive markets and trade facilitatingpolicies, this sector in West coast Africa exhibits low logistics performance levels. Inorder to address such issues, one needs to analyse the problem and identify the causes; thisthesis focuses on identifying the bottlenecks in the freight-forwarding sector in west coastAfrica.Purpose – The main purpose of this study is to identify the bottleneck/s within thefreight-forwarding industry in west coast Africa, namely: Angola, Cameroon, DR of Congo,Gabon, and Nigeria.Method – This thesis employs a pre-study and case study method, to ensure sufficient collectionof relevant material, taking into account the lack of research in this subject. We usedthe material obtained from the interviews and the secondary source, to structure our purpose,research questions, and to define the case of our study.Results – The study concludes with a series of interesting findings; First, the activity of aFreight Forwarder depends on a series of factors that do not depend on the Freight Forwarderper se. And second, Freight Forwarders in order to accomplish their tasks, have accessto services that are shared by all providers, and that are beyond their control. To conclude,the study identifies infrastructure as a major bottleneck in the Freight Forwarding sector.

I investigate the spoken dialogue of four Indian novels in English: Mulk Raj Anand's Untouchable (1935), Khushwant Singh's Train to Pakistan (1956), Rasipuram Krishnaswami Narayan's The World of Nagaraj (1990), and Rohinton Mistry's Family Matters (2002). Roger Fowler has said that literature, as a form of discourse, articulates ideology; it is through linguistic criticism (combination of literary criticism and linguistic analyses) that the ideologies in a literary text are uncovered. Shobhana Chelliah in her study of Indian novels in English concludes that the authors use Indian English (IndE) as a device to characterize buffoons and villains. Drawing upon Fowler's and Chelliah's framework, my investigation employs linguistic criticism of the four novels to expose the ideologies reflected in the use of fictionalized English in the Indian context. A quantitative inquiry based on thirty-five IndE features reveals that the authors appropriate these features, either to a greater or lesser degree, to almost all their characters, suggesting that IndE functions as the mainstream variety in these novels and creating an illusion that the authors are merely representing the characters' unique Indian worldviews. But within this dialect range, the appropriation of higher percentages of IndE features to specific characters or groups of characters reveal the authors' manipulation of IndE as a counter-realist and ideological device to portray deviant and defective characters. This subordinating of IndE as a substandard variety of English functions as the dominant ideology in my investigation of the four novels. Nevertheless, I also uncover the appropriation of a higher percentage of IndE features to foreground the masculinity of specific characters and to heighten the quintessentially traditional values of the older Brahmin generation, which justifies a contesting ideology about IndE that elevates it as the prestigious variety, not an aberration. Using an approach which combines literary criticism with linguistic analysis, I map and recommend a multidisciplinary methodology, which allows for a reevaluation of fictionalized IndE speech that goes beyond impressionistic analyses.

Early Warning Systems (EWSs) for banking sectors are used to measure occurrence risks of banking crises, generally observed with a rundown of bank deposits and widespread failures of financial institutions. In countries with a small number of banks, for example Turkey with 48 banks (BDDK, 2011), every bank may be considered to have a systematic importance since the failure of any individual bank may carry a potential threat to lead to a banking crisis. Taking into account this fact the present study focuses on EWSs in Turkey. Since there is no single correct EWS to apply to all cases, in this study, 300 models were constructed and tested to find models as accurate as possible by using a trial-and-error process and by searching optimal feature subset or classifier methods. Empirical results indicate that prediction accuracy did not increase significantly while we got closer to the actual occurrence of bankruptcy. An important finding of the study was that trends of financial ratios were very useful in the prediction of bank failures. Instead of failures as a result of instant shocks, the banks'failures followed through a path: first a downward movement affected the efficiency of the banks'
officers and the quality of management structure measured with "

declined. At last, the performance and the stability of banks'

. At the end of study, we proposed an ensemble model which produced probability ratios for the success rates of the banks. The proposed model achieved a very high success rate for the banks we considered.

In this study, "Delphi technique", "expert interview", "case studies" and other research, in-depth analysis of the causal bags industries of Taiwan''s traditional production techniques and the relationship between research and innovation, and K''s case. Results of this study are described below: First, the bag industry benchmarking should be used to collect the relevant industry benchmark management practices, there is a systematic finishing industry summed up the advantages and disadvantages and, through knowledge innovation and process improvement, to maintain a competitive advantage. Second, according to the case study in-depth understanding of Company K of the bag industry to optimize the machining program, emphasis should continue to improve processing equipment, processing procedures and arrange the details of the design, processing and enhance the quality of human resources and training, and so on. Third, traditional industries must pay attention to the importance of knowledge management and knowledge management by cumulative rule of thumb, enhance competitive advantage by corporate knowledge management will discuss the company point of view there is a positive relationship between innovation, continuous innovation, and constantly create a more consistent customer value products or services may be the only way to business success.

This study proposes a measurement and assessment model for the construction productivity of freeway reconstruction project, according to on the previous studies of Thomas and the characteristics of the freeway reconstruction project. The model is used on the cases of the freeway No. 1 reconstruction projects and No. 2 new construction project in Taiwan to realize and compare their respective influence factors of the construction productivity. When the model evaluates the threshold construction productivity of the embankment in the cases, the estimate values for the reconstruction projects and the new construction project are 0.048~0.052 MH/ M 3 and 0.025 MH/ M 3 , respectively. In addition, the influence factors in the reconstruction projects and between the reconstruction projects and the new construction project are introduced, leading to the arrangement of improvement methods. The results based on this study can support the use of the model to various constructions to completely establish the threshold construction productivity in construction engineering for the further use of the cost analysis and construction management. The working content factor in the model, however, should be further studied in a future to obtain a better result.

The linear consecutive-k-out-of-n and the linear consecutive-(r, s)-out-of-(m, n): F system both are enumerated minimum cuts easily. The optimization problem with linear consecutive-k-out-of-n: F system is discussed by many people. They proposed some heuristic methods for solving problem that are based on reliability importance. We propose the genetic algorithm for solving the optimization problem with linear consecutive-k-out-of-n: F system by introducing with reliability importance. The population in a genetic algorithm may converge on a local optimal solution and the mechanisms of crossover and mutation are not very effective to search other solution when the algorithm runs long time. We propose a perturbation mechanism to let the population get diverge and solution search scope gets larger to escape the population converges on a local optimal solution.

Trees, as threshold beings, effectively blur the line between the real world and fantastical alternate worlds, and destabilise traditional binary classification systems that distinguish humanity, and Culture, from Nature. Though the presence of trees is often peripheral to the main narrative action, their representation is necessary within the fantasy trope. Their consistent inclusion within fantasy texts of the twentieth century demonstrates an enduring arboreal legacy that cannot be disregarded in its contemporary relevance, whether they are represented individually or in collective forests. The purpose of my dissertation is to conduct a study of various prominent fantasy texts of the twentieth century, including the fantasy works of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Robert Holdstock, Diana Wynne Jones, Natalie Babbitt, and J.K. Rowling. In scrutinising these texts, and drawing on insights offered by liminal, ecocritical, ecofeminist, mythological and psychological theorists, I identify the primary function of trees within fantasy narratives as liminal: what Victor Turner identifies as a ‘betwixt and between’ state (1991:95) where binaries are suspended in favour of embracing potentiality. This liminality is constituted by three central dimensions: the ecological, the mythological, and the psychological. Each dimension informs the relationship between the arboreal as grounded in reality, and represented in fantasy. Trees, as literary and cinematic arboreal totems are positioned within fantasy narratives in such a way as to emphasise an underlying call to bio-conservatorship, to enable a connection to a larger scope of cultural expectation, and to act as a means through which human self-awareness is developed.English Studies
