Abstract:
Red Towers is named after Bratislava Castle in Bratislava, Slovakia. I spent the summers of 2017 and 2019 traveling to different cities in Slovakia, and since my own heritage is Slovak, I began thinking about the idea of "home." What makes a home a home? Where was home for me? Red Towers is divided into two sections. In the first section I tried to capture the feeling of excitement that comes with leaving home, exploring the unknown, and experiencing new things. The second section is much more gentle and contemplative, and expresses the longing to return home. I decided on the title Red Towers not only because of the connection to Slovakia, but also because of the power that the words convey and their metaphorical meaning. I have dedicated this piece to my mom, who created the best home a son could ask for, and continues to demonstrate an uncommon kindness and hospitality. The melody in the clarinet at the end is my melody for her.

Abstract:
My collection of poetry is a deeply personal exploration of what it means to be black, queer, and woman in modern-day South Africa. I interrogate being non-conformist in both a traditional-cultural upbringing and a more liberal yet equally-oppressive urban socialisation. I question what we are taught about the body and the feminine sexual space, while also addressing the mother-daughter relationship as the first and most constant reference of womanhood. The collection moves fluidly between the erotic, the uncomfortable and grotesque, what is painful, and what is beautiful and longed-for. Working promiscuously across forms, I employ prose poetry, interspersed with lyrical interludes, in an attempt at a narrative effect similar to what Claudia Rankine achieves in Don't Let Me Be Lonely. I also draw from writers such as Calixthe Beyala (Your Name Shall Be Tanga), and Janice Lee (Damnation), as well as sex guides, women's blogs, and feminist poetry.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to characterize by molecular studies theRhD antigens (weak D and partial D) in Brazilian blood donors. DNA samples ftom 503 blood donors phenotyped as weak D were tested by two different sequence-specific primers (pCR-SSP) assays to determine the presence or absence of RHD gene (PCR-SSP intron 4 and exon 10) and to detect the common weak D types. Ofthe 503 weak D samples studied, 415 (82,5%) were identified as weak D, 65 (12,9%) as partial D, 15 (3%) showed association ofweak D and partial D and 8 (1,6%) were normal D. Weak D types 1, 3 and 4 contributed more than 85% of alI molecular weak D types. For these 3 types, D-positive transfusion can be considered safe because no immunization events have been documented yet. These findings show for the first time the frequency of weak D types in Brazilians. Molecular analysis showed that 12,9% of the weak D phenotype samples studied carried a partia! D alIele. The partial Ds found in our study were DAR, DVI and DHMi. Forty (7,9%) DNA samples were characterized as DAR, 16 (3,8%) as DHMi and 9 (1,8%) as DVI. The characterization of the partia! D antigens DAR, DHMi and DVI may avoid alIoimmunization in patients phenotyped as weak D. Fiffeteen patients showed mutations to weak D and partia! D showing that these samples had the weak D and partia! D antigens associated. We also studied 4 DNA samples of patients phenotyped as weak D who had developed anti-D. Our study showed that anti-D alIoimmunization in these patients was associated with the presence of partia! D antigens. Two samples were classified as partia!, D DAR, 1 as DHMi and 1 was DVI.AlI the weak D types identified in our study were associated with the intensity of agglutination obtained at room temperature (RT), 3'fC and AGH. The sensitivity of detecting weak D depends on the anti-D reagent and on the exact conditions of the methods. Our results showed that the weak D types 1, 2, 3 and 4 were frequently detected at RT and 3'fC and therefore could be considered as D-positive for transfusion. According to our results we could recommend the use ofmonoclonal anti-DIgM with high avidity to detect weak D antigen with low antigen density in blood donors and two monoclonals, one IgM and one IgG in combination with AGT to detect the weak D antigen in patients

Abstract:

RED Digital Cinema is a rather new company that has developed a camera that has shaken the world of the film industry, the RED One camera. RED One is a digital cinema camera with the characteristics of a 35mm film camera. With a custom made 12 megapixel CMOS sensor it offers images with a filmic look that cannot be achieved with many other digital cinema cameras.

With a new camera comes a new set of media files to work with, which brings new software applications supporting them. RED Digital Cinema has developed several applications of their own, but there are also a few other software supporting RED. However, as of today the way of working with the RED media files together with these software applications are yet in progress.

During the short amount of time that RED One has existed, many questions has risen about what workflow is the best to use. This thesis presents a theoretical background of the RED camera and some software applications supporting RED media files. The main objective is to analyze RED material as well as existing workflows and find the optimal option.

Abstract:

The focus of this work has been on hybrid insulation in inhomogeneous electric fields under lightning impulse voltage stress. The principal idea behind hybrid insulation is the intentional use of surface charges to re-distribute the electric field within an insulation system. This allows a significant part of the electric stress to be transferred from the dielectric weaker gas to the dielectric stronger solid insulation thus increasing the total electric strength of the insulation system.

The concept has been theoretically and experimentally addressed by means of a hemispheric rod covered with a layer of solid insulation. Discharge activity and surface charge accumulation have been studied in an air gap by measuring the voltage and discharge current and recording the discharge activity using a high-speed digital camera. New methods have been introduced and evaluated for the evaluation of surface charge measurements.

The experiments found that the increase in positive inception voltage was considerable compared to uncovered rods. This increase varied from 35% up to 100% depending on the electrode distance. The increase in breakdown strength is higher than the increase in inception voltage and dependent on the covered length of the rod. During the application of a lightning impulse, the discharge activity spreads upwards along the rod and out into the air gap. Positive discharges form numerous branches and bridge the air gap in most cases. Negative discharges are more diffuse, less light intensive and only form a few branches around the tip of the rod where the electric field is the strongest. Discharge activity along the insulating surface has been observed where the background field is lower than the critical electric field strength. Visible discharge activity is observed where the background field is higher than 2.3 kV/mm and 2.5 kV/mm for positive and negative impulses respectively.

During the application of lightning impulses, discharge activity starts in the air gap around the tip where the electric field is highest and spreads upwards along the rod. As expected, negative charges accumulate on the surface in the case of positive impulse voltage and vice versa. However, after more powerful discharges during negative impulse voltage application, surface charges of both polarities have been observed.

Accumulated surface charges decay exponentially with a time constant τ varying from micro-seconds to hours depending on the material properties of the solid insulation. The dominating relaxation mechanism is found to be conduction through the solid insulation.

Improved methods to calculate surface charges based on probe response for a 2D axial symmetric case have been developed and evaluated. The method that is best suited for this purpose is the λ-method with truncated singular value decomposition (TSVD) as regularization.

Surface charge calculations show that the accumulated surface charges for the used configuration typically have a maximum value of 0.6 to 1.5 µC/m² and 0.4 to 1 µC/m² after positive and negative impulses respectively. The surface charge density in the areas with the highest discharge activity is relatively uniform. Further upwards along the rod, the surface charge density is reduced relatively fast towards zero, and in some cases, it changes polarity before approaching zero.

Huang, Yuli. "Elastohydrodynamic model of hydraulic rod seals with various rod surfaces." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/53061.

Abstract:
The reduction or elimination of leakage of hydraulic fluid from fluid power systems is considered a fundamental prerequisite for the expanded use of fluid power. There is also a need to reduce seal friction to both reduce energy dissipation and eliminate control problems. These seals are developed through empirical means at the present time, since the fundamental physics of seal operation has been unclear. This research develops numerical models for analyzing reciprocating hydraulic rod seals with various rod surfaces. These models consist of coupled fluid mechanics, contact mechanics and deformation analyses. Both flooded and starved lubrication boundary conditions are applied. For seals with a smooth rod and a plunge-ground rod, the model combines a 1-D finite volume Reynolds equation solver with a 2-D axisymmetric finite element deformation and static contact mechanics analyses, and a Greenwood-Williamson contact mechanics analysis with rod motion. Leakage and friction, along with sealing zone details with the plunge-ground rod are compared with those with the smooth rod. The influence of rod surface finish on seal performance is investigated and explained, under both flooded and starved conditions For seals with a micro-patterned rod, the model consists of finite volume Reynolds equation solver, finite element deformation and static contact mechanics analyses and a Greenwood-Williamson dynamic contact mechanics analysis. This model is able to handle rod surface pattern with 3-dimensional geometrics. Simulations with different micro-pattern geometries are performed to analyze the fundamental mechanism of surface pattern effects on seal operation. Again, both flooded and starved conditions are applied and the results for both cases are compared and analyzed.

Axelsson, Lena. "Karakterisering av blodgruppsgenen RHD hos patienter med svagt RhD-antigenuttryck." Thesis, Malmö högskola, Fakulteten för hälsa och samhälle (HS), 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mau:diva-24168.

Full text
Abstract:
The Rh blood group system is very complex with 54 blood group antigens encoded by two adjacent genes on chromosome 1 – RHD and RHCE. The RHD gene encodes the RhD protein, a membrane bound protein on erythrocytes whose antigens are the most clinically important and immunogenic after those of the ABO system, and which can result in transfusion complications and haemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn. Some individuals have variants of the RhD proteins that are expressed more weakly than normal (“weak D”), or have some of the epitopes missing (“partial D”), and for which serological methods cannot give a uniform result. This provides a problem in blood transfusion, pregnancy, and blood donation, and often results in the use of the already sparse supply of RhDnegative blood units for the safety of the patient. In this project, eight samples with weak RhD antigen expression have been sequenced with regard to the RHD gene in order to determine the RhD phenotype of the individuals. In six of the samples, six single nucleotide polymorphisms and two deletions were found, all of which are rare but are previously known. For two of the samples, no mutations in exons or adjacent introns could be detected to explain the weak expression of RhD in those individuals.

Abstract:
Crashes resulting from automobiles running a red light are typically severe in nature. One way to try to reduce the number and severity of these types of crashes is by increasing the red clearance interval of a traffic signal. In Portland, Oregon, eight intersections received a variety of treatments including red extensions. Determining which treatment had what effect can be difficult to weed out. Using a combination of crash analysis and a model simulating an intersection with red extensions, this paper describes the estimated impact of red light running intersection upgrades and red extensions on crashes. By performing a variety of before and after crash analysis, a reduction of angle crashes after treatments was detected, with a crash modification factor of 0.64 +/- 0.28 using the Empirical-Bayes method. Output from the simple simulation also suggest that red light running crashes can be reduced with red extension technology and confirms crash modification values determined from the Empirical-Bayes method.

Abstract:
"Blue & Red" is about sound, sense, paranoia, and experience. When intuition goes awry and projections are shot in all directions the camera and eye can go, poems are bound to be nearby. From beginning to end, the reader may wonder what landscape the wanderlust traveler walks on. Where he may settle. Is he a boy? What is manhood? Has the prince stolen the key from the queen? "Blue & Red" has tautological hair, performance anxieties, and actualizations. Sentimental at times, we remember. Some traumas are daily. "Blue & Red" stands on the argument that if you put all of your heart, soul, spirit, body, and mind, into a poem, the process will yield an art/entertainment for the thinking person. It rests on the fact that love and gratitude are not lost. It rests on intangible things we must agree on. It lastly rests on the autonomy of the free mind.

Abstract:
This practice-led, project-based research charts, simultaneously, my disenchantment and re-engagement with graphic design. By it's dissemination I hope to articulate: 1. How an evolving understanding of my sense disenchantment emerged from the research, and enabled the process of re-engagement. 2. The role, and importance, of provocation and doubt in creative practice generally, but specifically in practice-led research. The difficulty of provoking one's self, and the strategies through which I have tried to enact a disruptive reframing of my practice. 3. That through the highly reflective nature of practice-led research and the greater sense of self-awareness that inevitable comes from that I have been able to re-engage with graphic design. That this re-engagement has, for me specifically, had much to do with my ability to begin to negotiate my own personal terms of reference, so as to be able to locate myself within a community of practice, and to begin to take part in a discourse that has a certain resonance for me. Central to this research are questions about professional practice, dislocation/disinterest, research, resonance and reinvention. As disenchantment is common, perhaps pervasive, within professional practice, my account of this research will propose that a more general understanding of practice-led research-highly reflective, self-initiated work-is essential if graphic design is to support and sustain imaginative, innovative, and inventive practitioners. Rather than target graphic design's inability to support provocative practices (the studio, or the industry), my research focuses on the potential of the individual practitioner to motivate and design a more generative and engaged practice. As such any observations and/or discoveries are not presented as quantitative 'findings', but should be seen rather as generative understandings that promote future possibility and potential for the practice.

Abstract:
This collection of poems examines Latino migration to the United States from the perspective of a Central American immigrant on U.S. soil. The poems pay particular attention to the Mexican/American border landscape, the nostalgia of the homeland, the condition of Latino immigrants in the South, and the struggles associated with assimilation. Through surreal imagery, echoes of Latin-American poetry, and Mayan allusions, the poems represent the contemporary Latino experience: a battle of past, present, American, and Latin forces.

Lewis, Alexander John Robert. "Ultra-red galaxies." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/33044.

Full text
Abstract:
Dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) are highly luminous (LFIR ≳ 10¹² L⊙), very distant (z ≳2.5) and ≳ 10x rarer then 'normal', NIR-selected (BzK), star-forming galaxies. Capable of producing a Mstars ≳ 10¹¹-M⊙ galaxy after a tburst ~ 100-Myr burst of late-stage, merger-induced star formation, DSFGs naturally provide extreme laboratories with which to study the formation and evolution of massive structures within the Universe. Thus far, however, theoretical models have struggled to reconcile the observed abundance and redshift distribution of these massive, dust-enshrouded galaxies that occupy the high-end tail of the galaxy stellar mass function. Therefore, it is of paramount importance, from an observational point of view, to both increase the number of known distant (z ≳ 4) DSFGs and to thoroughly explore their extreme environments in order to provide further constraints on such models. Thus, in Chapter 2 of this thesis, I report on efforts to substantially increase the number of distant DSFGs using the uniquely wide H-ATLAS imaging survey. I analysed a sample of 109, so-called 'ultra-red galaxies' selected via their red Herschel-SPIRE flux densities (σ500 > 3.5 and S500 < 100mJy) and flux-density ratios (S500/S250 > 1.5 and S500/S350 > 0.85). Ground-Based continuum imaging at ~ 850 μm with the JCMT and APEX telescopes allowed me to locate the dust peaks of these S500 ≳ 30-mJy ultra-red galaxies and derive a median photometric redshift of zphot = 3.66 (3.30-4.27, IQR) for them (assuming that they can satisfactorily be represented by a Tdust ~ 30-K template SED). Using 25 spectroscopically confirmed DSFGs with SPIRE flux densities matching this ultra-red criteria, I determined that these FIR photometric redshift estimates have a minimum intrinsic scatter of σ = 0.14(1 + zspec) and systematically under-estimate the spectroscopic redshifts below zspec ≲ 5. With over a third of these ultra-red galaxies lying above z > 4, I derived a space density of at least p ≈ 6 x 10⁻⁷Mpc⁻³ for this sample (assuming a tburst = 100-Myr burst of star formation), which is only a factor of 7x less numerous than that of the most massive (Mstars ≳ 10¹¹M⊙), compact, quiescent galaxies selected in the NIR at z ~ 3. Finally, although the space density of z > 4 ultra-red galaxies aligns very well with that of massive (MBH ≳ 10⁸M⊙) AGN at z > 6, none have yet to be uncovered within this sample to date. In the following chapter, I present wide images obtained with LABOCA of a sub-sample of 22, representative ultra-red galaxies to see if these galaxies are signposting over-dense regions in the early Universe, as might be expected if they were to evolve into the most massive, compact, quiescent galaxies at z ~ 0. This LABOCA ultra-red galaxy survey covers an area of ≈ 0.8 deg² down to an average r.m.s. of 3.9mJy beam⁻¹, with the five deepest images going ≈ 2x deeper still. I catalogue 86 galaxies detected above > 3.5σ870 surrounding these 22 ultra-red galaxies, which implies a δ ≈ 100 ± 30% over-density of S870 > 8.5-mJy (LFIR ≈ (7-30) x 10¹² L⊙) DSFGs when compared against LESS. Thus, I am 99.93% confident that these ultra-red galaxies are pinpointing over-dense regions in the Universe, and ≈ 95% confident that these regions are over-dense by a factor of at least ≥ 1.5x. Using the same template SEDs as in the previous chapter, I derived a consistent median photometric redshift of z = 3.2 ± 0.2 with an IQR of z = 2.8-3.6 for these ultra-red galaxies. I constrained the surrounding galaxies likely responsible for this over-density to within |∆z| ≤ 0.65 of their respective ultra-red galaxies. However, on average, I was only able to associate one surrounding galaxy to within |∆z| ≤ 0.5 of its respective ultra-red galaxy. These 'associated' galaxies are radially distributed within (physical) distances of 1.6 ± 0.5Mpc from their ultra-red galaxies, have median SFRs of vI≈ (1.0±0.2)x10³M⊙ yr⁻¹ (assuming a Salpeter stellar IMF) and median gas reservoirs of Mgas ~ 1.7 x 10¹¹M⊙. These candidate proto-clusters have average total SFRs of at least Ψ ≈ (2.3 ± 0.5) x 10³M⊙ yr⁻¹ and a space density of ~ 9 x 10⁻⁷Mpc⁻³, consistent with the idea that their constituents may occupy the centres of rich galaxy clusters seen today. Finally, in Chapter 4 of this thesis, I extracted Herschel-SPIRE photometry at the 850-μm positions of DSFGs detected within in the S2CLS and S2COSMOS imaging surveys. I then analysed the multi-wavelength environmental properties around a robust sample of 64 ultra-red galaxies selected via their 'ultra-red probability'. Similar to the findings in Chapter 3, I found that these ultra-red galaxies are preferentially located in over-dense regions extending over scales of ~ 5' (or ~ 2Mpc at z ~ 3). Furthermore, I found that these candidate, high-redshift proto-clusters have FIR total dust masses and total SFRs of Mdust ~ 10⁹M⊙ and Ψ ~ 10³M⊙ yr⁻¹, respectively. Ground-Based, optical/NIR imaging around a subset of 42 ultra-red galaxies shows a factor of ~ 5x increase in both the stellar mass and the (MB -MI )-colour of associated LBGs as the radial distance decreases from . 500 kpc - consistent with the emergence of a galaxy red sequence at z ~ 3. Furthermore, these data show a 1-σ increase in the fraction of 'green-valley' galaxies within scales of ~ 5' compared to the field - supporting the concept that red-sequence galaxies are appearing at a faster rate around ultra-red galaxies compared to the field. There is a sizeable contribution of Mstars ~ 10¹²M⊙ from these high-redshift LBGs within the environments of ultra-red galaxies. On average, I was able to associate ≈ 28 LBGs to a given ultra-red galaxy (~ 30x the number of associated DSFGs). Although these systems have average optical/NIR/FIR properties that are consistent with their evolution into present-day galaxy clusters with DM halos of mass Mhalo ~ 10¹⁴-10¹⁵M⊙, I am still likely missing a sizeable contribution from unassociated LBGs and DSFGs due to the large photometric redshift uncertainties for the ultra-red galaxies. Therefore, the results presented in this thesis should be regarded as firm lower limits on these environmental properties around ultra-red galaxies, which can now only be improved upon when spectroscopic data increases the accuracy of the photometric redshift estimates presented here.

Abstract:
This work was created with the aim of promoting a new business model for arbitration services. Therefore, the need that different companies show when looking for people to carry out their different internal sporting events was observed in detail; We also have to mention the referees from different categories who find new opportunities to gain more experience, and earn additional income. Based on this reality, we found a solution similar to the one presented in European countries, which we consider to be a new proposal in the Peruvian market where we could have a good percentage of acceptance by these companies. With all the aforementioned, our objective is to provide a facility, since we have our own platform to offer an excellent arbitration service, this will be done based on performance evaluations towards our partners (arbitrators), where we will grant new growth opportunities to the people who are starting in the world of arbitration and improve the performance of arbitrators who may have had experience. In this way, as authors of the project we want to achieve strong loyalty with the different sports event companies that exist in Metropolitan Lima and to position ourselves in the Peruvian market.

Abstract:
Fluxgate magnetometers have always been of interest to the technical and scientific communities as practical and convenient sensors for vector magnetic field measurements in the range of microtesla requiring a resolution of hundreds of picotesla at room temperature, and they find applicability in fields such as space, geophysical exploration and mapping, non destructive testing, as well as assorted military applications. In this Thesis the research work on RTD Fluxgate is presented along with the development of models, prototypes and their characterization. Classical but also new technological approaches to realise low-cost Fluxgate magnetometers are proposed. The design, development and characterization of an integrated mixed signal circuit expressly designed to read out the magnetic field information, and alternative readout strategies have also been described.

Atris, Youssef H. "Design of RSD-cyclic and hybrid RSD-Cyclic/sigma-delta ADCs." Diss., Wichita State University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10057/1421.

Full text
Abstract:
In this research work two contributions to the area of analog to digital data converters have been discussed. The area of focus is the RSD-Cyclic and sigma-delta ADC. First a novel hybrid RSD-Cyclic-sigma-delta architecture is introduced which is a combination of the RSDCyclic ADC and sigma-delta ADC architectures. The resolution obtained with this hybrid architecture is n = n1 + n2 , where n1 = MSBrsd stands for the most significant bits obtained from the RSD-architecture and n2 = LSBsdl stands for the least significant bits obtained from the sigma-delta architecture. Since the sigma-delta block is required to achieve only an n2-bit resolution (n2, n1 < n ) the over-sampling ratio required for the sigma-delta is not as high as the over-sampling ratio required to achieve n-bit resolution. Also the requirements on the RSD-Cyclic block are only the requirements to achieve n1-bit resolution, which means that the requirements on the analog building blocks for the RSD-Cyclic part are more relaxed. Secondly, in the RSD-Cyclic area we have introduced a circuit technique that allows an entire ADC system to run on one operational amplifier without any loss of functionality. Therefore we will be saving power and area, both very desirable features for mobile applications.

Abstract:
This investigation in the 24 Kapteyn Selected Areas along the celestial equator examined 21 red dwarf stars identified in an objective-prism survey. These stars were classified as red dwarf stars using light at wavelengths between 5800 A and 6800 A. Using calcium-hydride-based luminosity classification, this study found 13 of these stars to be red giant stars, and only 6 stars were found to be red dwarfs. One star was determined to be warm star. One star was not clearly distinguishable as a dwarf or giant. Distance calculations for the red dwarf stars found that these stars lie within 40 parsecs of the sun.

Abstract:
Red deer (Cervus elaphus) is one of at least 31 herbivorous exotic mammals existing in New Zealand. All of these species have the potential to affect environmentral and production values. Reducing their impacts on their values, strengthening effective managements are important issues to a variety of agencies within New Zealand including the Department of Conservation (DOC), Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), local and regional governments. This research studied animal movement pattern and habitat use of 2 GPScollared red deer in the Canterbury high country and found (1) deer movement was affected by climatic variables such as rainfall and temperature, which had positive or negative effect on it, and had seasonal variation; (2) deer had dominant landcover use categories, depending on climate, season, and individual characteristics (3) deer had different movement patterns in terms of hourly distances. The purpose of the study is to draw accurate inferences from spatially explicit data for biosecurity managers and policy-makers through: (1) using global positioning system (GPS) as a tool to elucidate the application of GPS on red deer in wildlife management; (2) Animal Movement Analysis Arc View® 3.2 Extension under Arc View® Geographic Information System (GIS); (3) Animal movement analysis which used Generalized Additive Models (GAMs) to show how the movement of red deer was affected by different periods of time, seasons months and climatic variables (for example, rainfall and temperature).
