Full textThe Strategic Planning for Peruvian Quinoa has as its primary objective to achieve the outlined vision for the development of the Quinoa’s industry and its derivatives in 2027, which will be materialized through the interaction of two fundamental pillars: the long term objectives and the implementation of the strategies, both of them are the result of the in-depth analysis of primary information, which allow us to establish: (a) the global context of the Quinoa´s industry, that let us identify the referents and the competitors in the production and manufacturing of Quinoa in South America and in the world; and (b) the internal analysis which allow us to determine the Peruvian regions with more potential for the production of Quinoa, which are Puno, Arequipa, Ayacucho and because of the demand the coastal regions of Lambayeque and La Libertad as well; these results have been obtained through a current situation diagnostic of the Quinoa production and its derivatives in Peru in the last five years. The development of the production of Quinoa is a great opportunity for promotion of the Peruvian exportations in the global context, at first oriented to the European and American markets, to achieve this goal is imperative to implement a steering committee for the Quinoa’s industry, which enables the interaction of the companies within the industry, encourage research in order to improve the production and manufacturing quality, develop a marketing plan, find the financial resources, and improve the productivity and motivation of the producers through the implementation of a cluster for Quinoa’s production in the southern regions of the country with the main goal of develop the comparative advantages of the region in terms of climate and growing zones that ensure a continual production of the grain through the year, which gives sustainability to the industry and improves the level of competitiveness of the country, in order to ensure an improvement of the quality of life for the stakeholders of the value chain

Full textQuinoa is a native product of the Andean Region that is recognized in the world for its high protein level. During its cultivation quinoa has experienced genetic change which has given the Andean countries exclusivity to quinoa despite many efforts to grow this cereal on other regions. Peru is the main producer of quinoa in the world and the second largest exporter, mainly to the North American and European markets. In the last few years, exports of Peruvian quinoa have increased 95% and 124% although the export quantities are only 5% of the total production. One of the main characteristic of this market is its tendency to consume organic quinoa which maintains the sustainability of natural resources. This characteristic has obliged producers to lower the use of pesticides and fumigates that are damaging not only the environment but also human health. There is a new tendency as well which is to consume naturally colored products, know as “exotic” products. Quinoa has a color variety which is valuable in European and Asiatic countries. Quinoa has to become a better presence in the Peruvian national market, not only through social programs but also through commercials shops. It is a shame that actually big percentage of quinoa is consume by the producers themselves, only about 25% of the quinoa grown in Peru is sold commercially. Peru grows different varieties of quinoa, especially in Puno, a province of Perú where quinoa is about 80% of the national production. The future is a promising for Peruvian quinoa but without a strategic plan, we could suffer big economic and social loses. Inside the investigation process it was found that Peru has big comparative advantages which could be exploited to develop and to position quinoa in an international market. To reach this goal, it is necessary to face and to solve problems such as the lack of scale economies, training, integration and cooperation in quinoa production. Until now, the quinoa sector has not had an integral strategic plan. This work has developed a Peruvian quinoa strategic plan which is focusing on increasing Peru’s potentiality in the world market. The main strategies are association, strategic alliances, improve uses of technology, locally market niches improving exportations and internal consumption

Full textQuinoa is a product that has been gaining relevance worldwide because the nutritional contribution it provides. Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador are the main traditional producers. The adaptability that has quinoa has generated that Asian, European and American countries are interested in the cultivation of this for its production and internal consumption. Until 2014, Bolivia was the main supplier of organic quinoa, but only to specific sectors, this was one of the reasons why Peru replaced it, becoming the main exporter and producer of quinoa. In 2015, the quinoa market suffered an oversupply, due to this the prices fell, and the exports dropped, however, in 2017, exportation of quinoa has been improving due to the demand of EE. UU and U.E. Finally, this study determines the main factors that affect the competitiveness of quinoa exports of Peru’s agricultural industry in the period 2012-2017 on a monthly basis, applying for the analysis the revealed comparative advantage index given by Bela Balassa. It is concluded that the factors that influence competitiveness are export of quinoa, productivity and production, leaving in the background the variables export price, producer price and harvested area. In addition, it is recommended to raise these competitiveness factors so that Peru maintains its leadership as a producer and exporter of quinoa.

Full textIn 2017 Peru regained the first place as producer and exporter of quinoa in the world. This is an Andean, it has a great worldwide demand due to its nutritional properties, therefore, it has become one of the products. However, due to this high demand, the production of quinoa has improved drastically in recent years. These variations have caused the agro-export companies have to make changes in their production plans or, in turn, in turn, their work needs. As a result, agro-export companies have to find ways to be effective and efficient in all processes of the supply chain. One way to do this is to know the good practices of the industry and its level of maturity in the processes of the supply chain. The present investigation allows to know the good practices defined by the Supply Chain Council (SCC) through the Reference Model of Supply Chain Operations (SCOR) methodology, which provides the best practices of the applied supply chain to all industries. For this research, we will apply all this knowledge in the quinoa sourcing process, which has improved the most critical process throughout the supply chain. We will describe how the current processes are, the risks that the quinoa agro-export companies have, and finally we will know the good practices and the applications in the industries of the sector, in order to have an additional tool for all the companies that wish to venture into this item, or those that are already in the category and that need to know about which points should improve.
