Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the content of 33 empirical studies related to student self-assessment in primary and secondary education and have been published over the last decade (2009-2019) in 19 scientific journals classified in Scimago (only articles in journals with peer review system to assure their quality) in order to investigate: a) the research design (experimental, quasi-experimental, non-experimental), b) the research method (mixed method, quantitative method, qualitative method), c) the specific design (pretest-posttest etc.), d) the data collection method (questionnaire, interviews, etc.). According to the main findings most studies use non-experimental design, followed by experimental and quasi-experimental design. With regard to research methods quantitative method is used in all research designs, while qualitative and mixed method are used to a lesser degree and only in experimental and non-experimental design. Regarding the specific design, most experimental and quasi- experimental studies adopt a "pretest-posttest" design, while non-experimental studies follow mainly descriptive design. Finally, concerning the data collection methods, questionnaire is the most common method for all research designs, as opposed to other methods, such as interview or the combination of questionnaire and interview. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the issue of student self-assessment using experimental or quasi-experimental research design where the mixed methodological approach will be adopted and data collection will be carried out using various research tools such as the interview and the questionnaire in order to triangulate the results.

Abstract:
Problems of digital processing of Poisson-distributed data time series from various counters of radiation particles, photons, slow neutrons etc. are relevant for experimental physics and measuring technology. A low-pass filtering method for normalized Poisson-distributed data time series is proposed. A digital quasi-Gaussian filter is designed, with a finite impulse response and non-negative weights. The quasi-Gaussian filter synthesis is implemented using the technology of stochastic global minimization and modification of the annealing simulation algorithm. The results of testing the filtering method and the quasi-Gaussian filter on model and experimental normalized Poisson data from the URAGAN muon hodoscope, that have confirmed their effectiveness, are presented.

Abstract:
The research presented in this article follows up on several aspects of Gustav Jahoda’s long and fruitful career: (1) his early fieldwork on cognitive development in Africa, particularly in the area of spatial skills; (2) his interest in cross-cultural psychology as a research method; and (3) his insistence on bringing anthropology and psychology together. The topic of our research is the development of a so-called “geocentric” frame of spatial reference. This is a cognitive style, in which individuals describe and represent small-scale table-top space in terms of large-scale geographic dimensions. We explore the development with age of geocentric language and cognition, and the relationships between the two. We also explore the many environmental and socio-cultural variables that favor the use of this frame. We demonstrate how we untangled several of these variables by using a succession of within-society group comparisons, in several societies where a geocentric frame is in common usage (Bali, Indonesia, India, and Nepal). Our research program unfolds like a detective story, where one finding that is difficult to interpret because of several confounded variables leads to another quasi-experimental group comparison that suggests another hypothesis, which is then tested in a further session of field-work. In each case, we emphasize how important it was to have extensive linguistic and ethnographic knowledge before implementing psychological tests. The research design is not cross-cultural as such (we hardly ever perform comparisons between societies), but culturally sensitive within a series of societies; in other words, as Dasen and Jahoda (1986 , p. 413) defined it, “cross-cultural developmental psychology is not just comparative: essentially it is an outlook that takes culture seriously.”

Abstract:
Aim. The main aim of the study is a presentation of the results of a quasi-experiment related to using a serious game in the preparation phase of supervised teaching practice as well as during its completion. Methods. The main method of the study is a quasi-experiment with the factor rotation technique. The method comprised two phases with two unequal groups of surveyed university students. In the first phase, the experimental influence was investigated in the first group and the second group served as the control group (to compare the results). In the second phase, the groups were switched around in the quasi-experiment; the control group became the experimental group and vice versa. Results. The presented study has a theoretical-empirical character. In the theoretical part, the characteristics of quasi-experiment and its use are briefly discussed. In the empirical part, the quasi-experiment is applied to the educational reality of future teachers. Supervised practice teaching is an important part of the university education of future teachers. Using a serious game therein is a positive element also when it comes to the development of students’ approach towards supervised teaching practice. Conclusion. Quasi-experiment is used as an experimental method for verification of examined reality. In the educational reality, its realisation is more difficult because it is a more demanding environment than a laboratory one. By realising the quasi-experiment, the theoretical supposition about the positive influence of serious games on the development of a university student’s personality can be confirmed.

Abstract:
A modular and efficient Gaussian beam (GB) analysis method, incorporating frame-based Gabor transformation, GB reflection, and a 3D GB diffraction technique, was developed to analyze both the reflectors and frequency selective surface (FSS) in quasi-optical (QO) system. To validate this analysis method, a 3D dual-channel QO system operating at 183 and 325 GHz was designed and tested. The proposed QO system employs two-layer structure with a FSS of perforated hexagonal array transmitting the 325 GHz signal on the top layer while diverting the 183 GHz signal to the bottom layer. Measured results of the system demonstrate that the agreement can be achieved down to −30 dB signal level for both channels in the far field pattern. The discrepancy between the calculation and measurement is within 2 dB in the main beam region (2.5 times −3 dB beamwidth), verifying the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe the quasi-experiment setting to test the formulated design support (developed in the author’s PhD research) within a design research methodology (DRM) framework. This support intends to help designers to consciously engage rural families within a development aid scenario and increase their self-reliance towards their built environment (housing). Design/methodology/approach This paper elaborates on the setting in which the design support was tested within a quasi-experiment. The literature section describes the challenges in design research and why the DRM is suitable for this type of empirical research. Findings Findings of the paper include a workable setting to organise and evaluate the impact of a design support within a DRM framework on a vulnerable rural community. Research limitations/implications The main limitation of the research lies in the study population. Due to financial and time constraints, only four teams could participate in the experiment conducted in rural Kenya. Social implications Further research will need to prove that the support works in comparable situations on the African continent. Originality/value The quasi-experiment setting within a DRM framework could benefit researchers in comparable empirical investigations.

Abstract:
Abstract Scores to predict treatment outcomes have earned a well-deserved place in healthcare practice. However, when used to help achieve excellence in the care of a given disease, scores should also take into account organizational and social aspects. This article aims to create scores to obtain key variables and its application in the management of care of a given disease. We present a method called Epidemiological Planning for Patient Care Trajectory (PELC) and its application in a research of HIV pediatric patients. This case study is presented by means of two studies. The first study deals with the development of the method PELC. The second is HIV Pediatric case-control study based on PELC method. HIV pediatric research - the first practical PELC application - found these four key variables to the individual quality level care trajectories: adherence to ART, attending at least one appointment with the otolaryngologist, attending at least one appointment with social services, and having missed one or more routine appointments. We believe PELC method can be used in researches about any kind of care trajectories, contributing to quality level advancements in health services, with emphasis on patient safety and equity in healthcare.

Abstract:
Rotor systems applied widely in industry are nonlinear dynamic systems of multi-degree of freedom. They must be not only stability but also have enough stability margins. Stability margins for different motion states in rotor systems are defined based on trajectory-based stability-preserving dimensional-reduction (TSPDR) in a quantitative stability analysis method for rotor systems. With the help of stability margin, dynamic behavior analyses of rotor systems become easy. In this paper, experimental method is used to validate definition and law of stability margin of quasi-periodic motion which was presented in above method. Experiment results in a rotor experiment rig show that regular pattern of stability margin of quasi-periodic motion calculated from measured data accords with the rule of above method. Therefore the definition and the law of stability margin of quasi-periodic motion described in the quantitative stability analysis method are valid in real rotor systems.

Abstract:
This article examines the impact of excellence-promoting policies on the actual performance of municipalities in the Czech Republic. In this analysis, the performance of municipalities that have received awards for the use of quality management tools is compared with a selected group of municipalities that did not receive awards. Data envelopment analysis (DEA; with constant and variable returns on the scale), free disposal hull (FDH), and Order-M methods were utilized to represent performance. For the actual performance comparison, a quasi-experimental design was used. The analysis of outputs using the difference impact method found that this specific public policy did not have a positive impact on the efficiency of municipalities. If the difference-in-differences method is used, the opposite is achieved. However, the technical efficiency gains are very small. The use of the quasi-experimental design along with the determination of inputs and outputs which are characteristic of the Czech Republic also offers a contribution when this method is being applied to the assessment of institutions in the form of local governments.

Abstract:
Objective: The aim of this study is to test the effects of a customized intervention on distress among caregivers of persons with dementia (PWD) using a quasi-experimental design. Method: Fifty-one spouse caregivers in the experimental group and 51 in the control group participated in the study. The effects of the intervention were examined by comparing caregivers’ responses with questionnaires at pre-intervention baseline (T0) and immediately after intervention (T1). Differences were quantified using repeated-measures ANOVA. Results: The analyses indicated a stabilizing effect of the intervention on caregivers’ perceptions of PWD’s daily functioning, self-esteem related to caregiving, quality of family support, and feeling of distress. Linear increases were observed regarding sense of preparedness and impact on daily routine, while no differences (interaction and linear effects) were observed for degree of self-efficacy, depression, impact on finances, or self-rated health. Conclusion: These findings show a preliminary efficacy of the intervention proposed in this study to prevent the exacerbation of caregivers’ distress.

Abstract:
Quasi-cliques are dense incomplete subgraphs of a graph that generalize the notion of cliques. Enumerating quasi-cliques from a graph is a robust way to detect densely connected structures with applications in bioinformatics and social network analysis. However, enumerating quasi-cliques in a graph is a challenging problem, even harder than the problem of enumerating cliques. We consider the enumeration of top- k degree-based quasi-cliques and make the following contributions: (1) we show that even the problem of detecting whether a given quasi-clique is maximal (i.e., not contained within another quasi-clique) is NP-hard. (2) We present a novel heuristic algorithm K ernel QC to enumerate the k largest quasi-cliques in a graph. Our method is based on identifying kernels of extremely dense subgraphs within a graph, followed by growing subgraphs around these kernels, to arrive at quasi-cliques with the required densities. (3) Experimental results show that our algorithm accurately enumerates quasi-cliques from a graph, is much faster than current state-of-the-art methods for quasi-clique enumeration (often more than three orders of magnitude faster), and can scale to larger graphs than current methods.

Abstract:
This paper presents a water level sensing method using guided waves of A0 and quasi-Scholte modes. Theoretical, numerical, and experimental studies are performed to investigate the properties of both the A0 and quasi-Scholte modes. The comparative study of dispersion curves reveals that the plate with one side in water supports a quasi-Scholte mode besides Lamb modes. In addition, group velocities of A0 and quasi-Scholte modes are different. It is also found that the low-frequency A0 mode propagating in a free plate can convert to the quasi-Scholte mode when the plate has one side in water. Based on the velocity difference and mode conversion, a water level sensing method is developed. For the proof of concept, a laboratory experiment using a pitch-catch configuration with two piezoelectric transducers is designed for sensing water level in a steel vessel. The experimental results show that the travelling time between the two transducers linearly increases with the increase of water level and agree well with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:
As new structural concepts such as partial prestressing and steel-free bridge decks are more widely accepted and used, there is an increasing need for a reliable and reproducible fracture performance criterion that can describe resistance to crack growth. The required criterion should also be easy to determine experimentally so that it can be incorporated in structural specifications. The nonlinear behaviour of concrete and masonry materials suggested that quasi-brittle fracture mechanics approaches may be the most suitable for determining their fracture performance. The effective elastic crack model originally developed by Karihaloo and Nallathambi (1989) was modified to evaluate the critical crack depth under pure flexural stresses. A computer program was developed to calculate this depth iteratively from the experimental results. An experimental programme examining the fracture performance of four different structural materials (high performance concrete, mortar, fibre reinforced concrete, and masonry units) was carried out to examine the applicability of the model. As no post-peak data are required for the analysis, the model allows the use of a simple test setup to evaluate the fracture performance of quasi-brittle materials experimentally.Key words: fracture toughness, linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM), elastoplastic fracture mechanics (EPFM), quasi-brittle fracture mechanics, effective elastic crack, high performance concrete, masonry, fibre reinforced concrete.

Abstract:
Background. Smoking-related disease and injury is prominent among the numerous health problems on the U. S.-Mexico border, but little is known about the methods that might help promote smoking cessation among the low-income populations in this region. Method. Media campaigns were combined with different forms of intensive and community-wide interpersonal communication to encourage smoking cessation in a border U. S. city and in a Mexican city. Panels of moderate to heavy smokers were followed in four groups to allow quasi-experimental comparison of smoking cessation rates. Results. Over a five-year study period smoking cessation rates of 17% (self-reported) and 8% (verified) were observed in panels in the program community (N = 160). In the comparison community (N = 135) corresponding rates of smoking cessation were 7% (self-reported) and 1.5% (verified). Within the program community, no differences were observed in smoking cessation among smokers exposed to a community-wide program and those assigned to receive personal counseling. Discussion. Although the observed changes in smoking were unexpectedly small in the treatment and comparison groups, the approximately 8% effect size for the community-wide program was close to what was predicted. Results indicate that such programs may yield effects similar to those of more intensive approaches, but further research with greater statistical power will be necessary to confirm that point.

Abstract:
Background Longitudinal studies examining the life trajectories of young people after they have exited homelessness have identified concerns with persistent social and economic exclusion, struggles to shake off identities of homelessness, and housing instability. This pilot study sought to explore the feasibility of improving socioeconomic inclusion outcomes by bolstering identity capital (sense of purpose and control, self-efficacy and self-esteem) among young people who had experienced homelessness. Methods Nineteen individuals (aged 18–26) who had transitioned out of homelessness within the past three years participated in a six-week, six-session program focused on building identity capital. The study employed a mixed method prospective cohort hybrid design with an intervention group (Group One) and a delayed intervention comparison group (Group Two). Participants were interviewed every three months until nine months post-intervention. Results None of the youth who began the intervention dropped out of the program, with the exception of one participant who moved across the country and was unable to continue. Immediately after participating in the intervention, Group One had statistically significant improvements (p < .05) and large to very large effect sizes in self-esteem (d = 1.16) and physical community integration (d = 1.79) compared to changes in Group Two over the same period, which had not yet begun the intervention. In the pooled analysis, small to moderate effect sizes in hopelessness, physical community integration, and self-esteem were observed at all post-intervention time points. Notably, at six- and nine-months post-intervention, statistically significant improvements (p < .05) and moderate effect sizes in hopelessness (d = -0.73 and d = -0.60 respectively) and self-esteem (d = 0.71 and d = 0.53 respectively) were observed. Youth shared they appreciated the normalizing (vs. pathologizing) of strategies they needed to learn and spoke of the importance of framing new skills as something one needs “to have a better life” vs. “to get better.” Conclusions These early findings signal that targeting identity capital is feasible and may be a promising approach to incorporate into a more complex intervention that includes housing, education, and employment supports to help youth transition out of homelessness. Future research could build on these findings through a sufficiently powered randomized controlled trial.

Abstract:
Quasi three dimensional blade-to-blade solutions for stators and rotors of turbomachines are obtained using the Streamline Curvature Method (SLCM). The first-order velocity gradient equation of the SLCM, traditionally solved for the velocity field, is reformulated as a second-order elliptic differential equation and employed in tracing the streamtubes throughout the flow field. The equation of continuity is then used to calculate the velocity. The present method has the following advantages. First, it preserves the ellipticity of the flow field in the solution of the second-order velocity gradient equation. Second, it eliminates the need for curve fitting and strong smoothing under-relaxation in the classical SLCM. Third, the prediction of the stagnation streamlines is a straightforward matter which does not complicate the present procedure. Finally, body-fitted curvilinear coordinates (streamlines and orthogonals or quasi-orthogonals) are naturally generated in the method. Numerical solutions are obtained for inviscid incompressible flow in rotating and non-rotating passages and the results are compared with experimental data.

Abstract:
Progress in surveillance technology has led to the development of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) systems in cities around the world. Cameras are considered instrumental in crime reduction, yet existing research does not unambiguously answer the question whether installing them affects the number of crimes committed. The quasi-experimental method usually applied to evaluate CCTV systems’ effectiveness faces difficulties with data quantity and quality. Data quantity has a bearing on the number of crimes that can be conclusively inferred using the experimental procedure. Data quality affects the level of crime data aggregation. The lack of the exact location of a crime incident in the form of a street address or geographic coordinates hinders the selection procedure of experimental and control areas. In this paper we propose an innovative method of dealing with data limitations in a quasi-experimental study on the effectiveness of CCTV systems in Poland. As police data on crime incidents are geocoded onto a neighborhood or a street, we designed a method to overcome this drawback by applying similarity measures to time series and landscape metrics. The method makes it possible to determine experimental (test) and control areas which are necessary to conduct the study.

Abstract:
Most of the decaying systems namely α-decay and proton radio activity have extremely narrow widths and hence are termed as quasi-bound states. There are three methods available for the computation of very narrow widths. First, the analytic S-matrix method which treats resonance as a pole in complex energy plane with its real part representing resonance energy and the imaginary part the half width. Another two methods namely (i) direct (D) method and (ii) distorted wave (DW) method are based on the property of the quasi-bound state wave function which is quite similar to a bound state wave function in the interior region and is matched with an outgoing spherical wave representing decaying behavior. We make a comparative study of these methods by applying them to the α-decay systems whose experimental results of Q-value and decay half-lives are known recently. It is observed that all the three methods give practically the same results for widths calculated at the same Q-value and explain the experimental results of Q-values and half-lives in several α-decaying nuclei quite well with a proper Coulomb nuclear interaction potential for the α+daughter nucleus system.

Abstract:
A mathematical model is developed to analyze the unsteady flow through an harmonically oscillating cascade of airfoils, including separated flow. The model incorporates an inverse integral boundary layer solution with the time-marching Euler analysis NPHASE. An embedded composite grid formulation is incorporated, specifically a deforming C-grid embedded in a Cartesian H-grid, thereby simplifying grid generation. To reduce computational requirements, Fourier series unsteady periodic boundary conditions are implemented. The integral turbulent boundary layer model is closed with steady correlations adopted in a quasi-steady manner. To couple the inviscid and viscous solutions, the viscous effect is modeled in the unsteady Euler solution in a quasi-steady manner by a transpiration boundary condition. An isolated airfoil is used to compare the steady interaction model with experimental data. Then a flat plate cascade is used to verify the unsteady flow solver with linear theory predictions. An experimental unsteady aerodynamics data set of a loaded cascade with separated meanflow executing torsional oscillations compared favorably with the analysis. The code is then utilized to study the effect of flow separation on the unsteady aerodynamics.

Abstract:
In the field of indoor pedestrian positioning, the improved Quasi-Static magnetic Field (iQSF) method has been proposed to estimate gyroscope biases in magnetically perturbed environments. However, this method is only effective when a person walks along straight-line paths. For other curved or more complex path patterns, the iQSF method would fail to detect the quasi-static magnetic field. To address this issue, a novel approach is developed for quasi-static magnetic field detection in foot-mounted Inertial Navigation System. The proposed method detects the quasi-static magnetic field using the rate of change in differences between the magnetically derived heading and the heading derived from gyroscope. In addition, to eliminate the distortions caused by system platforms and shoes, a magnetometer calibration method is developed and the calibration is transformed from three-dimensional to two-dimensional coordinate according to the motion model of a pedestrian. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can provide superior performance in suppressing the heading errors with the comparison to iQSF method.

Abstract:
Quality control is of great significance for the economical manufacturing and reliable application of medium voltage insulators. With the increasingly stringent quality control requirement, traditional quality control methods in this field face a growing challenge on their efficiency. Therefore, this study aims to achieve quality specifications by optimizing process conditions with the least costs. Thus, a knowledge-informed simplex search method was proposed based on an idea of knowledge-informed optimization to enhance the optimization efficiency. Firstly, a new mathematical quantity, quasi-gradient estimation, was generated following a reconstruction of the simplex search from the essence and the development history of the method. Based on this quantity, the gradient-free method possessed the same gradient property and unified form as the gradient-based methods. Secondly, an implementation of the knowledge-informed simplex search method based on historical quasi-gradient estimations (short for GK-SS) was constructed. The GK-SS-based quality control method utilized the historical quasi-gradient estimations for each simplex generated during the optimization process to improve the method’s search directions’ accuracy in a statistical sense. Finally, this method was applied to the weight control of a kind of post insulator. The experimental simulation results showed that the method is effective and efficient in the quality control of medium voltage insulators.

Abstract:
The fracture behavior of polymeric materials has been widely studied in recent years, both experimentally and numerically. Different numerical approaches have been considered in the study of crack propagation processes, from continuum-based numerical formulations to discrete models, many of the latter being limited in the selection of the Poisson’s coefficient of the considered material. In this work, we present a numerical and experimental analysis of the crack propagation process of polymethylmethacrylate beams with central and eccentric notches subjected to quasi-static three-point bending tests. The developed discrete numerical model consists of a regular triangular lattice model based on axial and normal interaction springs, accounting for nearest-neighbor interactions. The proposed model allows solving the above mentioned limitation in the selection of Poisson’s coefficient, incorporating a fracture criterion defined by a bilinear law with softening that includes the fracture energy in the formulation and allows considering a progressive damage. One of the main objectives of this work is to show the capacity of this lattice to simulate quasi-static fracture problems. The obtained results show that the proposed lattice model is capable of providing results close to the experimental ones in terms of crack pattern, peak load and initial stiffening.

The instruments used in this research are: test, observation, and documentation. The process of applying story method on SKI subjects through ten stages are: Place of story, sitting position, story language, interesting, teacher intonation, appearance of figures, emotional appearance, sound imitation, moving, mastery of students who are not serious. The average post-test of the control class is 75.81 and the average post-test of the experimental class is 77.06 so Based on the acquisition of that value that -t arithmetic> -t table (-14.219> -2.035), for the experimental class then Ha be accepted. This means that in this experimental class the value of the test using the story method is higher than by using learning that does not use the method of story (lecture). In addition, researchers also observed the activities of teachers in the application of story methods, observation data resulted in the percentage of control class teachers without using the story method by 45%, and the percentage of experimental class teachers by applying the story method by 87%. So it can be concluded that there is a significant influence by applying the story method in learning, if the teacher knows and can apply the stages in the story method properly and correctly. So the application of story methods can affect student learning outcomes on SKI subjects are said to be effective and there are significant changes or improvements. Abstract:
In order to get a fast performance analysis tool for multi-stage axial compressors, a quasi-two dimensional analysis model based on time-marching method is developed in this paper. The model is based on Euler equation, and several source terms, like inviscid blade force model and viscous force model, are added to simulate different phenomena of compressor internal flow. The flow line in blade area is adjusted to solve the discontinuity problem at blade leading edge. Two test cases-PW3S1, a 3.5-stage axial compressor and a 1.5-stage high-speed axial compressor, are presented to validate the quasi-2D model. The overall performance characteristics of two compressors at different rotation speed are calculated then. The computed results are compared with experimental data or 3D results. The average errors of pressure ratio and efficiency are 0.52% and 0.63% in PW3S1 case, 1.73% and 2.91% in 1.5-stage compressor case, and the model is able to capture shock wave and to predict choke condition.

Abstract:
Investigation on the quasi-static residual stress relaxation is an important aspect of component design and life management. After taking into account the influence of transverse stress and strength distribution, this paper proposes a new criterion of residual stress relaxation under quasi-static load as follow: the surface residual stress tends to relax as long as the Mises effective stress anywhere exceeds the local yield point. In addition, by X-ray tensile test, a method of determining superficial yield strength based on the Von Mises hypothesis was applied at the shot-peened surface of a martensitic stainless steel 0Cr13Ni4Mo. The experimental results show that the yield strength of superficial layer is larger than that of core material. According to the experimental results, a simplified ladder-shaped model of the depth distribution of yield strength is proposed. On the basis of the above-mentioned relaxation criterion and the strength distribution model, a new method is presented to calculate the relaxation amount. The calculated results coincide with the experimental results.
