Abstract:
ABSTRACT. Geophysical surveys were accomplished in Bahia, Brazil, and they aimed at detecting resistivity and/or IP geophysical anomalies that may be correlated to large quartz mass occurrences that, in some cases, may have economic interest (hyaline high-quality quartz or quartz with rutile inclusions). These quartz masses occur in granitic rocks. The indirect geophysical detection of quartz masses was possible, however it could not differentiate the aforementioned types of quartz. After digging wells and trenches, the presence of milky quartz masses, without economic interest, was confirmed. Keywords: resistivity, IP, quartz prospecting.

Abstract:
The grinding experiments of Quartz Fiber-Reinforced Quartz Composites(QFRQC) were conducted on MK9025 NC optical curve grinding machine. Grinding forces were measured by KISTLER dynamometer and the morphologies of the grinding surface were observed with Hatchi S-4800 SEM. In this paper, the effect of grinding orientation on the ground surface damage of QFRQC was discussed. Grinding orientation has a big influence on the ground surface damage. When grinding orientation is perpendicular to fiber orientation, the surface of the workpiece is poor; By contrast, when grinding orientation is parallel to fiber orientation, the surface of the workpiece is good; when grinding is on the fiber end-faces, the surface of the workpiece is best.

Abstract:
We have designed and fabricated a custom quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a reduced fundamental frequency; a larger gap between the prongs; and the best quality factor in air at atmospheric conditions ever reported, to our knowledge. Acoustic microresonators have been added to the QTF in order to enhance the sensor sensitivity. We demonstrate a normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) of 3.7 × 10−9 W.cm−1.Hz−1/2 for CO2 detection at atmospheric pressure. The influence of the inner diameter and length of the microresonators has been studied, as well as the penetration depth between the QTF’s prongs. We investigated the acoustic isolation of our system and measured the Allan deviation of the sensor.

Abstract:
Quartz-based composites reinforced by acupuncture quartz fibers were prepared by liquid phase infiltration-in situ solidification process. Effects of different molding processes on the density, micro-structure, phase structure and mechanics properties of the composites were studied. The experimental results show that the composite materials prepared by the silica slurry as matrix and 10% silica sol as the interface layer have better performance: the density increased from 0.74g/cm3 to 1.58g/cm3; the tensile strength, flexural strength and compressive strength reached 32.2MPa, 72.6MPa and 116MPa respectively; it is worth noting that the micro-structure of the material is uniform and compact, and the fracture mode of the material is ductile fracture with the pull out of the fiber.
