Abstract:
Recent theoretical studies have provided new insight into the intrinsic transverse momentum distributions of valence and sea quarks in the nucleon at a low scale. The valence quark transverse momentum distributions ([Formula: see text]) are governed by the nucleon's inverse hadronic size R-1 ~ 0.2 GeV and drop steeply at large pT. The sea quark distributions ([Formula: see text]) are in large part generated by non–perturbative chiral–symmetry breaking interactions and extend up to the scale ρ-1 ~ 0.6 GeV. These findings have many implications for modeling the initial conditions of perturbative QCD evolution of TMD distributions (starting scale, shape of pT distributions, coordinate–space correlation functions). The qualitative difference between valence and sea quark intrinsic pT distributions could be observed experimentally, by comparing the transverse momentum distributions of selected hadrons in semi–inclusive deep–inelastic scattering, or those of dileptons produced in pp and [Formula: see text] scattering.

Abstract:
In this contribution we present an overview of recent results concerning the impact of a possible flavour dependence of the intrinsic quark transverse momentum on electroweak observables. In particular, we focus on the qT spectrum of electroweak gauge bosons produced in proton-proton collisions at the LHC and on the direct determination of the W boson mass. We show that these effects are comparable in size to other nonperturbative effects commonly included in phenomenological analyses and should thus be included in precise theoretical predictions for present and future hadron colliders.

Abstract:
Jefferson Lab's upgrade of its Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) has recently been completed. The project involved an upgrade of the accelerator to achieve a maximum beam energy of 12 GeV and the construction of a fourth end station, Experimental Hall D, as well as new detector equipment for two of the three existing halls (A, B, and C). A broad experimental program has been developed to map the nucleon's intrinsic quark distributions in transverse space and in longitudinal momentum through measurements of deeply exclusive and semi-inclusive processes, and to probe color confinement by studying the spectrum of hadrons with active gluon degrees of freedom in the wave function. Other programs include the forward parton distribution function at large quark momentum fraction x, the quark and gluon polarized distribution functions, measurements of electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon ground state and of nucleon resonance transitions at short distances, and the exploration of physics beyond the Standard Model in high-precision parity-violating processes and in the search for signals of dark matter. The higher beam energy is also suitable for exploration of quark hadronization properties using the nucleus as a laboratory. This review highlights major areas of hadron and nuclear science that will be the focus of the first 5 years of operation.

Abstract:
The transverse momentum spectra of identified particles produced in high energy proton-proton p + p collisions are empirically described by a new method with the framework of the participant quark model or the multisource model at the quark level, in which the source itself is exactly the participant quark. Each participant (constituent) quark contributes to the transverse momentum spectrum, which is described by the TP-like function, a revised Tsallis–Pareto-type function. The transverse momentum spectrum of the hadron is the convolution of two or more TP-like functions. For a lepton, the transverse momentum spectrum is the convolution of two TP-like functions due to two participant quarks, e.g., projectile and target quarks, taking part in the collisions. A discussed theoretical approach seems to describe the p + p collisions data at center-of-mass energy s = 200 GeV , 2.76 TeV, and 13 TeV very well.

Abstract:
In the heavy-quark limit, the valence Fock-state components in the B mesons are described by a set of two light-cone wave functions. We show that these two wave functions obey simple coupled differential equations, which are based on the equations of motion in the Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET), and the analytic solutions for them are obtained. The results generalize the recently obtained longitudinal-momentum distribution in the Wandzura–Wilczek approximation by including the transverse momenta. We find that the transverse momentum distribution depends on the longitudinal momentum of the constituents, and that the wave functions damp very slowly for large transverse separation between quark and antiquark.

Abstract:
2009/2010
The main topic of this thesis is the measurement of the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) azimuthal asymmetries in the inclusive hadron production in the deep inelastic scattering (DIS). This work has been carried on in the framework of COMPASS, a fixed target experiment at CERN's SPS, which started data taking in 2002. One of the main topic of COMPASS is the study of the nucleon spin structure using high energy (100-200 GeV) muon beam and either transversely and longitudinally polarized proton and deuteron target. Recent developments both from the experimental and theoretical side pointed out the relevance of the transverse spin effects and of new effects, related to the intrinsic transverse momentum of the quark and its correlation with the spin. The nucleon structure, in the non perturbative QCD formalism, can be described at first order, in the collinear approximation, by three parton distribution functions (PDF): the unpolarized PDF, the helicity PDF and the transversity PDF. When including the intrinsic transverse momentum of the quark other 5 PDFs are needed at first order. They are related to the correlation between the transverse momentum of the quark and the spin and are practically unmeasured. The semi inclusive DIS (SIDIS) allows to study all these functions. Indeed the the SIDIS differential cross section, taking into account the beam and target polarization, is characterized by 14 azimuthal modulations in independent linear combination of the nucleon spin angle and of the hadrons angle, as measured with respect to the virtual photon direction. Their amplitudes are related to the structure functions given by the convolution between the new PDFs and the hadron fragmentation functions. In this thesis the measurement of the azimuthal asymmetries which appears in the SIDIS cross section on the unpolarized and longitudinally polarized target. Of particular interest is the information that this measurement give on the Boer-Mulders TMD PDF, which is a very interesting topic. The analysed data have been taken using the 160 GeV positive muon beam on the deuteron target. The target configuration and the spectrometer are optimized for the spin asymmetry measurements and are described in the thesis as well as the data taking. Also, the data processing and the software used for the analysis and the SIDIS data selection are described. The measurement of the azimuthal asymmetries on the longitudinally polarized target have been done using the same data as the one used for the $\Delta$G (the contribution to the nucleon spin of the longitudinal spin of the gluons) measurement. To avoid acceptance effects in the asymmetries extraction, the data collected from the two oppositely polarized target cells (which form the target) have been opportunely combined. Other possible systematic effects have been studied in details and are described in the thesis. \\ The asymmetries have been extracted as functions of the relevant kinematical variables and separately for positive and negative hadrons. The final results, accepted for publication in European Journal C, are compared with the results produced by other experiments and with the calculations of theoretical models of the TMD functions. The measurement of the azimuthal asymmetries which appears in the spin independent part of the SIDIS cross section is more difficult since it cannot benefit from the periodically reversal of the target polarization. The measured hadron azimuthal distributions must be corrected for the possible effects introduced by the apparatus acceptance (geometrical acceptance, detectors and trigger efficiencies). The Monte Carlo simulation of the apparatus has been used to estimate those effects. Extensive studies of the description of the azimuthal acceptance of the apparatus have been done in the whole kinematical domain of interest using different SIDIS events generations. A reliable asymmetries extraction method has been developed and used. A considerable effort has been put into the study and the control of the systematics. Also in this case the asymmetries have been extracted as functions of the relevant kinematical variables and separately for positive and negative hadrons. \\ The strongest measured signals are related to the Cahn effect, which is a kinematical effect proportional to the intrinsic transverse momentum of the quarks, and to the Boer-Mulders TMD PDF, describing the correlation between the intrinsic transverse momentum of the quark and its transverse spin. \\ The results, in particular the kinematical and the charge dependencies of the asymmetries, are interpreted in terms of TMD quantities and higher effects in the non perturbative QCD. The comparisons with the results produced by the other experiments, and with the theoretical predictions are also discussed.

The collisions of heavy ions at high energy produce the new state of matter called the quark gluon plasma. A parton traversing the plasma loses its energy which results in the jet quenching phenomenon. The dependence of the jet quenchingonthepartonflavorprovidesconstraints the models describing energy loss. The imbalance of b-jets is a very suitable observable to study this phenomena. This dissertation presents the measurement of the transverse momentum imbalance of b-jets and inclusive (non-identified) jets in PbPb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV which is performed with the CMS detector at the LHC with total integral luminosity of 404 µb−1. No significant difference in jet quenching between light and heavy flavor jets is observed. The interpretation of results with a simple model of energy loss is performed

Abstract:
The top quark is the heaviest particle in Standard Model. When it is produced with a large Lorentz boost, its decay products tend to overlap, making the standard reconstruction techniques inefficient; large R jet substructure analysis techniques allow to increase the detection efficiency for these events. Various differential cross section measurements of boosted t-tbar from pp collisions with sqrt(s)=8 TeV are presented: with respect to the mass, to the transverse momentum and the pseudorapidity of the t-tbar system. The results here have been obtained using a sample of 20 fb^-1, recorded by ATLAS during 2012. The events are selected with a cut-based approach in the single lepton plus jets decay channel, where the lepton can be either an electron or a muon. The final background-subtracted distributions are corrected for the distortion introduced by the detector and selection effects using unfolding methods. The measurements are dominated by the systematic uncertainties, and are in agreement with the Standard Model, even if it can be seen a general tendency of the theoretical predictions to overestimate the measured cross section for increasing transverse momentum and mass of the t-tbar system.

Abstract:
AbstractIn certain physical cases, the angular momentum of a vector particle may naturally align with a direction not exactly contained in the production plane, leading to an attenuation of the polarization magnitude observable in any experimentally defined frame. In this chapter we consider two possible causes of this phenomenon: the higher-order, non-planar processes contributing to Drell--Yan, W and Z production, and the intrinsic transverse momentum of the partons inside the colliding hadrons. We discuss the effects of these phenomena on the measured frame-dependent and frame-independent parameters of the observed angular distribution.
