Abstract:
At the present stage of the developed society, the attention of scientists and practitioners to the analysis of the digital society has increased. This is evidenced by the appearance of various publications in line with this issue; the formation and implementation of regulatory documents, for example, the Strategy for the Development of the Information Society in the Russian Federation for 2017–2030. In this regard, it becomes relevant to analyze a new model of the quality of life, a digital one, as one of the results of the development of a digital society. The methodological basis of the research is the concepts of the representatives of post industrialism D. Bell, P. Drucker, G. Galbraith, E. Toffl er about the role of theoretical knowledge and technology in ensuring the quality of life as determinants of all processes occurring in societies, as well as the ideas of the members of the Club of Rome, who created models of life quality and determined the ways to ensure it in relation to developing countries. This article analyzes individual models of digital society as social practices, which showed that the main trend of their development should be a new quality of digital life, generated by the digital environment and forming new technologies, communications, interaction mechanisms. A certain concept of “digital model of quality of life” is a refl ection of the processes of digitization of everyday life and professional activity of a new subject of public life. We revealed that new interactions arise in the digital model of quality of life: knowledge that creates new technologies is the determining and producing resource for all benefi ts; the introduction of these technologies ensures the development of the digital economy, which forms the need for new mechanisms that determine the evolution of society and man, as the subject of these trends which education should form. The digital model of the quality of life is studied from the standpoint of objectivism and subjectivism. The research materials can be used in assessing trends in the development of modern digital society, identifying the prospects for the development of society in the conditions of digitalization, in making forecasts of the future development of mankind.

Background and Objectives: As advances in medicine are proceeding, so are treatment goals shifting from sheer mortality rates to improving HRQoL and social reintegration after burn injury. Following this trend, we aimed to assess HRQoL, employment and life satisfaction after burn injury to gain insight on confounding factors. Materials and Methods: This single-center follow-up study was conducted using the SF-36 V1.0 in German and further questions evaluating employment and life satisfaction. It reached 128 adult in-patients (recall 33.0%) with former burn injuries, treated between 2012 and 2019 at the Division of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Hospital of Graz. The questionnaire outcomes were set into relation with clinical data obtained from the medical records. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 27.0 for Windows. Results: Of the 128 participants, 72.7% were male and 27.3% female. The mean age at the time of injury was 40.0 ± 15.7 years and mean %TBSA among the study population was 9.2 ± 11.0%. The male patients had sustained more extensive injuries (p = 0.005). However, the female patients scored significantly (p < 0.05) and consistently lower in all the domains of the SF-36, except for “bodily pain” (p = 0.061). Moreover, the female patients scored lower in all the domains of life satisfaction, although significant differences were only found in the domains of fulfillment (p = 0.050) and mental wellbeing (p = 0.015). Furthermore, employment status differed significantly between the male and female patients before as well as after the burn injury. Proportionally less women were employed at both time points. Overall, unemployment had declined. Conclusions: Life satisfaction after burn injury in this study cohort seems to be good. Return to work has shown a promising trend. Strikingly, HRQoL and life satisfaction were lower in women after burn injury. Further research on the reasons for this gender discrepancy might improve HRQoL and life satisfaction after burns.

Abstract:
Purpose – Improving the commercial success rate of innovations requires alternative approaches based on social science methodologies for identifying subtle, emerging changes in consumer needs and behaviors. The purpose of this paper is to address this call by proposing trend spotting to guide innovation researchers and service managers towards innovations that are more in accordance with emerging consumer needs. Design/methodology/approach – The authors develop, describe, and employ a methodology for trend spotting to derive eight consumer trends that will have a strong influence on their choices. To provide further insights into these trends, the authors label and describe three customer segments as a function of life-cycle. The goal is to provide a framework for identifying innovations that are of higher value consumers. Findings – The authors identified eight consumer trends, i.e. Always on the go, Always logged-in, Quality information faster, Nowism, Look at me now, Privacy, Sustainable living, and return on time (RoT), present across the three life-stage segments, i.e. Young free and single, Chaos in my life, and Got my life back. Practical implications – For illustration purpose, the authors elaborate on the trend RoT and employ their findings and framework to illustrate how the airline industry may derive ideas for valuable innovations. Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first time trend spotting has been employed in the field of service marketing and service innovations.

Abstract:
The paper deals with the quality of life in Czech rural areas and its measurement. The first part is focused on the introduction of the term “quality of life“, with particular emphasis on its analytic uses and the related issues. Building on the up to date research, we go on to conceptualize the term into seven groups of indicators. In the next part, we deal with living conditions in Czech rural areas and build our hypotheses, based upon them. We employ the methods of statistical analysis of the European Social Survey data to perform a rural vs. non-rural comparison for each of the seven dimensions identified. In the final part, we discuss the findings and match the conclusions with the current trends in Czech rural areas.

Abstract:

The South African Quality of Life Trends study has tracked the subjective well-being of South Africans in ten waves from 1983 to 2010. The paper presents the SAQoL trendline of life satisfaction, happiness and perceptions of life getting better or worse against the backdrop of the transition from apartheid to democracy. Subjective well-being peaked in the month following the first open elections in April 1994 when black and white South Africans were equally satisfied and happy at levels found in other democratic societies. But post-election euphoria was short-lived and levels of well-being dropped the following year and racial inequalities in evaluations of life re-emerged. The tenth and latest wave in the study was conducted a few months after South Africa’s successful hosting of the Soccer World Cup. In 2010, the proportions of all South Africans expressing satisfaction, happiness and optimism was among the highest since the coming of democracy—just over half stated they were satisfied, close on two-thirds were happy, and half felt life was getting better. Nonetheless, while the standard of living has increased for a minority of formerly disadvantaged South Africans and a small black middle class has emerged, there are still huge disparities in both material and subjective well-being. In 1997 and 2010, South Africans were asked what would make them happier in future. In 2010, the majority of citizens still hoped for basic necessities, income and employment, to enhance their quality of life.

Abstract:
This project has been developed in the breakthrough framework of the Value Based Health Care (VBHC), which aims at improving health outcomes at lower cost in different medical conditions. The VBHC paradigm has been applied in cancer care to improve the management of the disease, considering epidemiological, medical, psychological and economic outcomes. Two studies have been designed and implemented to better investigate the psychological perspective of lung and prostate cancer patients, in the light of the VBHC paradigm. The project identifies the trend of clinical and psychological status over time and predict this change with sociodemographic or medical variables. Several categories of patients characterized by different trends were identified, elucidating the psychological dimension of cancer patients. A person-oriented approach was used to analyze patients’ recovery. One-year Quality of Life (QoL) trends in early stage of lung and prostate cancer patients undergoing surgery were identified. Patients’ recovery after surgery was characterized by both an overall decrease of symptoms and an increase of health and functioning over time. Prostate cancer patients showed different longitudinal trajectories of urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction. In lung cancer patients, pre-surgery QoL, type of surgery, perioperative complications, and age, affected the post-surgery QoL as well as the linear and quadratic trends over time. Through the implementation of this holistic approach, the predictive model of patients’ recovery will be developed, thus improving medical decision-making, the choice of treatment, and patients’ awareness about their care process. Potential harms, QoL, and expected outcomes will be more predictable and better manageable. Participants will be more empowered, being more aware of their post-surgical care.

Darken, Patrick Fitzgerald. "Testing for Changes in Trend in Water Quality Data." Diss., Virginia Tech, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28936.

Full text
Abstract:
Time Series of water quality variables typically possess many of several characteristics which complicate analysis. Of interest to researchers is often the trend over time of the water quality variable. However, sometimes water quality variable levels appear to increase or decrease monotonically for a period of time then switch direction after some intervention affects the factors which have a causal relationship with the level of the variable. Naturally, when analyzed for trend as a whole, these time series usually do not provide significant results. The problem of testing for a change in trend is addressed, and a method for perfoming this test based on a test of equivalence of two modified Kendall's Tau nonparametric correlation coefficients (neither necessarily equal to zero) is presented. The test is made valid for use with serially correlated data by use of a new bootstrap method titled the effective sample size bootstrap. Further issues involved in applying this test to water quality variables are also addressed.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to develop a child self-report quality of life (QOL) measure for children below eight years. Two questions were central to the development of our instrument. First, can children below eight years self-report on their thoughts, feelings, and lives? Second, if so what are the best ways to gain self-reports from children? In answering these questions, we produced a set of guidelines that can be applied by researchers developing self-report measures for children. Studies 1 and 2 report the initial validation of our child self-report QOL measure (the teddy bear QOL measure, TedQL.l & 2). In Study 1, children's TedQL.l scores were positively correlated to their scores on an established measure (the PedsQLTM4.0). In Study 2, the response scale used to complete TedQL.2 items impacted on the psychometric properties of our measure. Study 3 reported further development of the content of our measure, using interview data from children about their lives. Based on the results of Study 3, a new version of our measure was developed (due to deletion, alteration, and addition of items). Study 4 established the most appropriate response scale for the TedQL.4, by comparing the psychometric properties of children's responses to TedQL.3 items across three response scales. Study 4 showed that children used concrete examples of specific situations to answer the TedQL.3 items, which may explain why young children's self reports are less stable over time compared to older children. The analysis in Study 4 revealed eight items that could be removed from the TedQL.3. Study 5 reported further validation of the child and parent versions of the TedQL.4. Both children's and parent's TedQLA scores were correlated to their PedsQLTM4.0 scores. No relations between child and parent rated child QOL were found for the PedsQLTM4.0 scores, however children's and parent's TedQL.4 scores were correlated across some of their scores. This thesis has shown the importance of gaining self-reports from children themselves, , and highlighted the best methods to use for such instruments. The applications of our TedQL measure have been discussed in the concluding section.

Abstract:
Background: Quality of Life (QoL) is now an important outcome for people with dementia but the nature of the illness means that there may be difficulty in measuring it. Aims: This thesis, using an established dementia specific outcome measure, the QOL-AD, aims to assess the validity of measuring QoL in severe dementia and to investigate determinants both of QoL and of change in QoL in dementia. Method: In the first study, 224 people with Alzheimer's disease living in community and institutional settings and their caregivers were interviewed. In the second study, 238 people with dementia living in residential homes and staff were interviewed with a follow up assessment at 20 weeks.;Results: People with a MMSE scores of < 12 and 3 could provide valid and reliable ratings of their own QoL and mood, functional ability and psychosocial factors were associated with QoL in this group. Secondly, the person with dementia's self-ratings of QoL were independently predicted by current mood, cholinesterase inhibitor treatment and living environment, whereas family caregiver ratings of the person with dementia's QoL were predicted by mood and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Similarly, in residential homes, mood was the strongest predictor of self-rated QoL but staff ratings of resident's QoL were predicted by levels of dependency. Lastly, cognition, mood function and behaviour were investigated as putative factors influencing change in QoL over 20 weeks. Change in QoL was predicted by changes in mood and cognition. Conclusion: People with severe dementia (MMSE > 2) can comment on their QoL. People with dementia's perception of QoL differs from their caregiver's perception of it. Many people with dementia experience a decline in QoL and this may be linked to deterioration in mood or cognitive function. This suggests that psychological and pharmacological interventions aimed at improving mood or cognition may also benefit QoL.

Abstract:
AbstractFitness technology, including trackers and smartphone applications (apps), has become increasingly popular for measuring and encouraging physical activity in recent years. Physical activity is closely linked with health and well-being; however, many Americans do not engage in regular exercise. This trend of inactivity increases with age and can interfere with an individual’s capacity to work. The benefits of physical activity and fitness extend beyond job performance and physical aspects of work capacity and include longer life and enhanced quality of life. This literature review addresses the question: How does the use of self-management QoL technologies affect work capacity and reported quality of life? It examines (1) the factors associated with variations in work capacity and quality of life; (2) the state-of-art of personalized, miniaturized computing QoL technologies for measuring and improving physical activity and fitness levels; (3) the use of activity trackers to quantify work capacity; and (4) strategies to enhance use of Web-based tools and fitness technology for behavioral change, health management, and rehabilitation interventions for the self-management of work capacity and enhancement of health-related quality of life across the lifespan. This chapter concludes with recommendations for future development of tools for the assessment and improvement of working capacity.

Abstract:
Chiayi City was the first city built in Taiwan. Under Japanese colonial rule t, Chiayi City became the second densely populated city in Taiwan due to Alishan Forestry. In recent years, Chiayi City Government has promoted urban renewal, improved the living environment, and enhanced urban functions as the main goals of urban development. Expediting the reconstruction of unsafe and old buildings in the urban planning district is its specific plan. The built public housing in Chiayi has reached an expected useful life, and the building safety and quality of life do not meet the current needs for the residential environment any longer, which leads to the gradually migration of the population in these areas. This research will take the trendy design of open building to address new design concepts of a new public housing for to facilitating residential building safety and improving environmental quality in Chiayi City.

Abstract:
Achieving rated capacity and economical operation of existing thermal power plants are vital issues for utilities. Plants nearing their design life are likely to show declining trend in availability as well as increasing trend in operation and maintenance costs due to ageing. Constraints in system adequacy, decreasing trend in efficiency and poor reliability are key issues to be addressed while planning life extension. 4×110 MW power plant located in southern part of India has been taken up for renovation and modernization. Pressure parts failures mainly accounted for the reduced availability of the units. The exit gas temperature in boiler was on the higher side leading to operation of the units with reduced efficiency. Change in fuel quality over the years as compared to what has been considered during design was a constraint in achieving rated capacity. The poor heat rate of turbine necessitated incorporation of the state-of-art design to achieve better heat rate. Improvements required in control and instrumentation system were also addressed in the renovation and modernization. Improvements in plant load factor, availability and unit heat rate could be achieved in the two units where renovation and modernization has been completed. The details of the renovation and modernization of these units are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:
Reliability growth curves are modeled using the results of Weibull distribution regression analysis. The Weibull Learning Curve (WLC) model is useful because it provides an early statistical indication of wear out issues. The vibration, thermal, humidity and corrosion environments of the F-22 are severe. It is prudent to be concerned about wearout problems in severe aircraft environments. The power of Weibull is the ability to predict the characteristic life and distribution shape with a small amount of data. The proposed model is compared to the traditional Duane Learning Curve approach. Statistical model validity is evaluated using numeric and graphical methods, including coefficients of determination (r2) and residuals. The WLC model provides insight into interdisciplinary issues, including supplier quality control, qualification testing, physics of failure, and reliability engineering. In addition, the WLC model quantifies the number of items with removal statistics consistent with wearout; therefore, this study helps to quantify successes and shortfalls of durability analysis and testing approaches.

Vaginal Dilator Use to Promote Sexual Wellbeing After Radiotherapy in Gynaecological Cancer Survivors: A Prospective Observational Study. Science Repository, October 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.31487/j.ijcst.2021.03.01.sup.

Abstract:
Background: Since continuing advances in radiotherapy technology broaden the role of radiotherapy in the treatment of gynaecologic malignancies, the use of vaginal dilators has been introduced in order to mitigate the risk of vaginal stenosis. The main aims of this study were to investigate the vaginal dilator use efficacy in the treatment of radiation-induced vaginal stenosis and the vaginal dilator effect on sexual quality of life. Methods: We studied fifty-three patients with endometrial or cervical cancer. The participants were treated with radical or adjuvant external beam radiotherapy and/or brachytherapy. They were routinely examined at four time points post-radiotherapy when also they were asked to fill in a validated sexual function-vaginal changes questionnaire. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The vaginal stenosis grading score was decreased and the size of the vaginal dilator comfortably insertable was gradually increased throughout the year of vaginal dilator use while radiation-induced vaginal and sexual symptoms were improved throughout the year of VD use. All patients with initial grade 3 showed vaginal stenosis of grade 2 after 12 months of vaginal dilator use and 65.8% of the patients with grade 2 initial vaginal stenosis demonstrated final vaginal stenosis grade 1 while 77.8% of the participants with initial 1st size of vaginal dilators reached the 3rd vaginal dilator size after 12 months. Starting time of dilator therapy <= 3 months after the end of radiotherapy was associated with a significant decrease in vaginal stenosis. Additionally, there was an overall upward trend regarding patients’ satisfaction with their sexual life. Conclusion: Endometrial and cervical cancer survivors should be encouraged to use vaginal dilators for the treatment of vaginal stenosis and sexual rehabilitation after radiotherapy.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to massive rates of unemployment and greater uncertainty in the job market. There is a growing need for data-driven tools and analyses to better inform the public on trends within the job market. In particular, obtaining a “snapshot” of available employment opportunities mid-pandemic promises insights to inform policy and support retraining programs. In this work, we combine data scraped from the Canadian Job Bank and Numbeo globally crowd-sourced repository to explore the relationship between job postings during a global pandemic and Key Performance Indicators (e.g. quality of life index, cost of living) for major cities across Canada. This analysis aims to help Canadians make informed career decisions, collect a “snapshot” of the Canadian employment opportunities amid a pandemic, and inform job seekers in identifying the correct fit between the desired lifestyle of a city and their career. We collected a new high-quality dataset of job postings from jobbank.gc.ca obtained with the use of ethical web scraping and performed exploratory data analysis on this dataset to identify job opportunity trends. When optimizing for average salary of job openings with quality of life, affordability, cost of living, and traffic indices, it was found that Edmonton, AB consistently scores higher than the mean, and is therefore an attractive place to move. Furthermore, we identified optimal provinces to relocate to with respect to individual skill levels. It was determined that Ajax, Marathon, and Chapleau, ON are each attractive cities for IT professionals, construction workers, and healthcare workers respectively when maximizing average salary. Finally, we publicly release our scraped dataset as a mid-pandemic snapshot of Canadian employment opportunities and present a public web application that provides an interactive visual interface that summarizes our findings for the general public and the broader research community.
