Abstract:

This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 93 aged people, divided among four institutions in the municipality of Lamego (Portugal). The purpose of this study was to investigate the quality of life of the sample and the factors affecting it, and identify the degree of dependence in basic daily living activities. The data was collected using the following: i) a bio-relational questionnaire, ii) a quality of life evaluation scale, and iii) the Katz Index. In terms of the quality of life of the institutionalized aged people, 51.6% include themselves in the group with quality of life, and it was observed there was a positive correlation between the Katz index and the quality of life index in the institutionalized aged people. There were no differences in the quality of life index regarding gender, marital status, degree of education, and the presence of pain in the institutionalized aged people.

Abstract:

Recent progress in science and medicine is that regions such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and Western Europe have witnessed dramatic declines in infant morbidity and mortality. The most significant of these declines has occurred among infants born prematurely and low birth weight (LBW)--the cohort that represents the highest proportion of illness and death among infants Despite these medical advances, recent longitudinal studies have provided clear evidence of physical health problems; cognitive and neuropsychological dysfunction; and other social, emotional, and behavioral problems among children born prematurely. A number of studies have indicated that premature and LBW infants are still at risk for psychosocial, physical, and mental problems despite the immediate contributions of post-natal interventions to their increased chance for survival The extant research has demonstrated that children born prematurely and LBW are at risk for problems in health, neuropsychological functioning, learning, academic achievement, behavior, and psychosocial adjustment. Research has further demonstrated that a variety of physical and psychological conditions are associated with poorer QOL among children. However, few studies have examined pediatric QOL among preterm school-aged children. Moreover, existing studies have not explored the relationship between cognitive, academic, and social/emotional functioning and QOL. The current study compared child and parent ratings of health-related quality of life among school-aged children born preterm (n = 26) and full-term (n = 28). Given the increased rates of physical, psychological, and cognitive problems among the preterm population, it was hypothesized that children born prematurely would have significantly poorer proxy-reported and self-reported QOL than children born preterm.

Abstract:

This study explored quality of life and 'meaningful activity' for people living with dementia in residential aged care facilities, drawing on the experiences and perspectives of residents, their family members and care staff. The findings identified groups of residents who have fewer activity opportunities and less frequent participation in activities. A deeper understanding was developed of 'meaningful activity', the benefits of participating in these types of activities and the supports needed for residents to participate. The knowledge gained from this study will inform care practices and improve the daily lives of people living with dementia in residential aged care facilities.

Abstract:

Modern national development strategy of our country is based on population quality of life improving. It is worth noting that the quality of a person's life is often directly related to health state. Modern medicine uses a special term "health-related quality of life" (HRQOL). The study of HRQOL allows to determine the factors contribute to person's life improvement. The questionnaires as research method are widely used in various fields of activity, scientific research, as well as for early diagnosis of various socially significant diseases. The article evaluates the passenger vehicles male drivers individual quality of life using the SF–36 questionnaire «Quality of life assessment». This questionnaire allows to assess a person's perception of life quality in connection with health state, taking into account physical, psychological, functional state and social actions. The analysis of questionnaire survey of 245 Moscow drivers aged from 20 to 60 years was carried out. For all indicators in the group of 20-29 years are higher than in the group of 40-49 years and 50-59 years. The results allow us to assess the quality of life of drivers as quite high.

Abstract:

Background: Elderly people face health problems associated with reduced health and increased disability. Dependent elderly on caregivers who cause a burden affecting the quality of life of caregivers. The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between the burden and quality of life among dependent elderly caregivers. Subjects and Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out in Pakuncen Village, Yogyakarta. The study subjects were 30 informal caregivers who cared for their family member aged ≥ 60 years with moderate dependence. Instruments used to screen dependent elderly included Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Instrument Activities of Daily Living (IADL) to measure level of independence, MMSE and AD-8 to assess cognitive function of elderly. Caregivers aged ≥ 60 years underwent MMSE and those with scores <24 was excluded. Caregivers’ burden ware measured using The Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) and Caregiver Reaction Assessment (CRA). Measurements of quality of life among caregivers was conducted by WHOQOL-BREF. Data were analyzed using Spearman-rank correlation. Results: Out of 30 caregivers, 24 were female and 6 were male with an average age of 49 years. Most respondents had light to moderate burden (Mean= 34.27; SD=18.94). Caregivers’ quality of life were low (<60) in psychological (Mean= 58.17; SD= 12.31), social relation (Mean= 59.77; SD= 9.04), and the environment domains (Mean= 51.90; SD= 10.00). Caregivers’ quality of life was high (≥60) in physical health domain (Mean= 63.30; SD=12.83). There were negative correlations between caregiver burden (ZBI and CRA) and the quality life of caregivers (WHOQOL-BREF). Conclusion: In Yogyakarta, the burden of caregivers (ZBI and CRA) and the quality of caregivers’ lives (WHOQOL-BREF) are negatively correlated. Abstract:

Growing the proportion of older people requires adapting services and products to their needs and preferences, which will support and extend their full life. While once people aged 55 and over considered themselves old, most of them now live an active life. Over the past decade, the proportion of those who are fully employed has changed and their stereotypes and behaviour have increased, thus changing the quality of life demands. With the gradual aging of the population, the problem of dealing with the housing of older people begins to grow. Housing is one of the key factors in the fight against social exclusion. Housing promotes coherence between communities, enabling sustainable development goals to be achieved. Each state uses its own housing policy, based on social policy and historical conditions, to solve housing-related problems. In the paper we will discuss the possibilities of life in retirement age.

Abstract:

Smoking is a major concern in modern society, as it is the main risk factor for COPD. In Brazil, one third of the adult population smokes, 16.7 million men and 11.2 million women. According to INCA statistics, there are an estimated 200 thousand annual deaths related to smoking in Brazil. To assess lung function and quality of life between smokers and non-smokers. A cross-sectional observational study will be carried out with 40 volunteers, 20 smokers and 20 non-smokers, male, aged between 50 and 70 years. Volunteers diagnosed with COPD, restrictive diseases, lung cancer, trachea and bronchi will be excluded. Volunteers will undergo an assessment of lung function through the following assessment methods: respiratory muscle strength by manovacuometry, peak expiratory flow and forced expiratory volume in one second through spirometry and quality of life will be performed using the Short Form Health Survey questionnaire 36 (SF-36). It is expected with the results obtained, to identify if there are changes in respiratory muscle strength, ventilatory function and quality of life of smokers. If there is respiratory compromise, the physical therapy approach can be directed towards preventive aspects of possible diseases related to smoking.

Review question / Objective: Inclusion criteria: population: 1) A randomized controlled study on the impact of music intervention on the QOL of patients with AD; 2) The participants in this study is patients with AD; 3) There is no significant difference among age, gender and education background in sorted groups before analysis which make these groups comparable; intervention: 1)Intervention Modality Music-based intervention; comparison: 1) All data were sorted into two groups: the music intervention group and the control group without any music intervention; outcome: 1) The indicators evaluated in the literature included the score of QOL-AD or WHOQOL-BERF scale, at least one of the two scales summarized in selected publications; language: 1) Only articles published in English and Chinese were considered. Exclusion criteria: 1) The participants were not diagnosed with AD; 2) Non-musical intervention;3) Non-RCTs; 4) No specific values for outcome variables; 5) Articles lacking original data; 6) Repeat published reports; 7) Full text could not be obtained.

Abstract:

Aged residential care (ARC) residents with morbid health conditions frequently experience delirium. This condition is associated with diminished quality of life, preventable morbidity and untimely death. It is challenging and costly to manage delirium because of the complex interplay of physical and psychiatric symptoms associated with this condition in both primary and secondary services. With awareness of risk factors and knowledge about delirium, ARC nurses can play a vital role in early identification, assessment and treatment, but most importantly in preventing delirium in aged-care residents as well as improving health outcomes. Focus groups were carried out with ARC nurses to ascertain their opinions on how they assess and manage delirium in ARC facilities in South Auckland, New Zealand. Findings identified that there were strengths and weaknesses, as well as gaps in assessment and management of delirium. Nurses would benefit from delirium education, appropriate tools and adequate resources to help them manage delirium. Issues with diagnosing delirium, anxiety about challenging behaviours, family dynamics, lack of training and absence of IV treatment were noticeable features in this study.

Abstract:

Under the current legal paradigm, the rights to privacy and data protection provide natural persons with subjective rights to protect their private interests, such as related to human dignity, individual autonomy and personal freedom. In principle, when data processing is based on non-personal or aggregated data or when such data pro- cesses have an impact on societal, rather than individual interests, citizens cannot rely on these rights. Although this legal paradigm has worked well for decades, it is increasingly put under pressure because Big Data processes are typically based indis- criminate rather than targeted data collection, because the high volumes of data are processed on an aggregated rather than a personal level and because the policies and decisions based on the statistical correlations found through algorithmic analytics are mostly addressed at large groups or society as a whole rather than specific individuals. This means that large parts of the data-driven environment are currently left unregu- lated and that individuals are often unable to rely on their fundamental rights when addressing the more systemic effects of Big Data processes. This article will discuss how this tension might be relieved by turning to the notion ‘quality of life’, which has the potential of becoming the new standard for the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) when dealing with privacy related cases.

Review question / Objective: A meta-analysis of cross-sectional, case-control and cohort studies (S) was conducted to explore whether women with POI/POF (P) could increase risk of depression, anxiety, and poor quality of life (O). Intervention studies (I) are eligible only if pre-intervention data were available(I) and the comparator(C) of this meta-analysis was people who do not suffer from POI (age-matched). Condition being studied: Several studies have been conducted to show that POI affects the quality of life of patients, of which psychological and psychosocial factors cannot be ignored as a part. Most studies have shown that POI patients are more prone to negative emotions such as depression and anxiety than normal people, but some studies have also shown that normal POI patients are psychologically indistinguishable from normal people. Therefore, meta-analysis is needed to determine the effect of POI on psychological factors and to better guide the clinical treatment plan.

Review question / Objective: Our study aims to synthesise results from randomised controlled trials to assess the effectiveness and safety of PRP combined with intravitreous ranibizumab for T2PDR. Condition being studied: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most common complication of diabetes mellitus, which will seriously affect the quality of life of patients and bring great burden to patients’ families and society. DR is one of the most important diseases of blindness in people aged 20 to 60 years worldwide. Nearly 15% of diabetic patients with a disease duration of more than 5 years were combined with DR.The prevalence of vision threatening diabetic retinopathy in the United States is 4.4 percent. Worldwide, the prevalence is estimated at 10.2%.At present, the treatment methods for type 2 proliferative diabetic retinopathy (T2PDR), at home and abroad mainly include retinal laser photocoagulation and intravitreal injection of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors.
