Abstract:
Thyroid cancer incidence is increasing worldwide. Though long-term survival rates are excellent, recurrence remains a significant problem, which highlights potential areas of needed improvement, including the surgical care of these patients. This review paper identifies tools and markers that can be used to improve surgical quality in thyroid cancer. Preoperative surgical planning starts with an adequate ultrasound evaluation of the cervical lymph node basins. Postoperatively, thyroglobulin and radioactive iodine uptake scans can track adequacy of resection. In addition, lymph node yield and lymph node ratios serve as indirect markers for assessing the quality of lymph node dissections. Current research also suggests that high-volume surgeons have improved oncological outcomes. Surgeons can use these tools and information to follow and potentially improve the care provided to patients.

Abstract:
Evaluation of health-related quality of life (QoL) in people with pituitary tumors has received much attention over the last 10–15 years. Most of them show impaired QoL, but little is known about how to prevent impairment or how to improve QoL. Our aim is to review what is known about QoL in pituitary tumors patients and to highlight the areas worth improving, for the patient’s well-being. The article has four sections: acromegaly, Cushing’s syndrome, prolactinomas, and non-functioning adenomas. Control of comorbidities is usually an important factor to prevent QoL impairment; however, each disease has specific characteristics that should be properly addressed in order to obtain full patient recovery after successful therapy

Abstract:
Cushing’s disease (CD) is a rare disorder caused by an adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-secreting pituitary adenoma. Chronic exposure to hypercortisolism leads to significant morbidities, which may be only partially reversible after remission of the disease, as well as to impairment of the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and an increase in mortality. Transsphenoidal surgery (TSS) is the treatment of choice, and recurrence rates vary widely, confirming the need for lifelong follow-up. This review summarises the studies performed on HRQoL, recurrence rates and morbidities in patients who have CD.

Abstract:
Quality of life is a nebulous term that is applied in medicine to assess the impact of disease states on the overall health of affected patients. It is difficult to measure, subject to interpretation based on the relative experiences of those assessing and reporting it, and there are no assessments or tools available to describe or determine the relative contributions of particular disease states and the affected person’s constitution and pre-morbid state or personality to their quality of life.

Abstract:
The interaction between land use and water quality is of great importance worldwide as agriculture has been proven to exert a huge pressure on the quality of groundwater and surface waters due to excess losses of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorous) through leaching and erosion processes. These losses result in, inter alia, high nitrate concentrations in groundwater and eutrophication of rivers, lakes and coastal waters. Combatting especially non-point losses of nutrients has been a hot topic for river basin managers worldwide, and new important mitigation measures to reduce the input of nutrients into groundwater and surface waters at the pollution source have been developed and implemented in many countries. This Special Issue of the Land use and Water Quality conference series (LuWQ) includes a total of 11 papers covering topics such as: (i) nitrogen surplus; (ii) protection of groundwater from pollution; (iii) nutrient sources of pollution and dynamics in catchments and (iv) new technologies for monitoring, mapping and analysing water quality.

Abstract:
It is widely accepted that diabetes self-management education (DSME) is an important component of care. It has been shown that DSME is associated with improvements in clinical, behavioral, and psychosocial outcomes. Despite proven benefits, the number of patients who receive DSME are disappointingly small. Introducing educator services in primary care has been shown to improve access and outcomes. As the diabetes epidemic continues, strategies to help patients meet targets and lower risk for complications are needed. The provision of DSME is critical in overcoming barriers to good-quality care. Those responsible for delivering good quality care need to mobilize efforts and explore avenues to meet the needs of those living with complex chronic diseases.

Abstract:
The healthcare and social cost associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and the foot can be devastating. There are more than 300,000 hospitalizations in the US each year for diabetic foot complications and there were more than 92,000 lower extremity amputations of people with diabetes in 1999.1The problems of ulceration and amputation have a profound effect on the quality of life of those who are affected.
