Cet article présente l'ensemble des biocapteurs en cours d'étude et proposés pour le contrôle en continu, automatisé et in situ de la qualité des eaux. Le principe des systèmes, étudiés jusqu'ici majoritairement en laboratoire et sur pilote, sera donné avec leurs performances au plan sensibilité et spécificité de détection des polluants hydriques. Ces performances conditionnent leur domaine d'application : les systèmes très sensibles étant affectés au contrôle des eaux d'alimentation et des eaux souterraines, les moins sensibles au contrôle des effluents très contaminés. Les biocapteurs peuvent se caractériser par deux de leurs composantes principales : - le réactif biologique ou biocatalyseur, sensible au(x) polluant(s); - le détecteur appelé transducteur, qui traduit la réponse biologique du biocatalyseur en un signal électrique. Le transducteur peut être de type optique, électrochimique, ampérométrique principalement, ou piézoélectrique. Trois grands types de biocapteurs peuvent être distingués selon la nature du biocatalyseur : - les bioréacteurs, basés sur l'étude des réponses comportementales des vertébrés (poissons) et d'autres organismes aquatiques (microcrustacés, bivalves): - les biosondes cellulaires reposant sur l'étude des fonctions métaboliques telles que la respiration, la bioluminescence, la photosynthèse de microorganismes immobilisés (bactéries, microalgues, levures) ou libres (boues activées) dans le milieu analysé: - les biocapteurs "d'affinité" basés sur l'utilisation d'enzymes ou d'anticorps, chargés de détecter respectivement les substrats et inhibiteurs enzymatiques spécifiques, ou les substances antigéniques vis à vis desquelles les anticorps ont été développés. Ces systèmes sont, par principe, les plus spécifiques mais aussi les plus sensibles. Ils ne couvrent, cependant, qu'une gamme encore très limitée de micropolluants hydriques. Le degré d'autonomie d'un biocapteur, sa facilité d'utilisation et de maintenance et sa fiabilité, sont des éléments qui rentrent en ligne de compte dans les performances. Ces qualités devront être évaluées lors de la phase de validation in situ, essentielle et déterminante pour juger de l'intérêt du système en conditions de fonctionnement réel.

L’oeuf peut être défini comme une source peu énergétique de protéines parfaitement équilibrées et de lipides de très bonne digestibilité, assurant par ailleurs 20 à 30 % du besoin journalier de l’homme en de nombreux minéraux et vitamines (pour 100 g d’oeuf). Il est cependant déficient en glucides, calcium et vitamine C. Ces qualités font de l’oeuf un aliment particulièrement indiqué pour les populations sensibles à l’équilibre de leur ration : enfants, personnes âgées ou convalescentes. L’oeuf est enfin le seul aliment d’origine animale capable d’être conservé à l’état cru pendant une période notable à température ambiante.

La profession d’ingénieur s’enracine d’ailleurs dans des milieux industriels et sociaux de plus en plus sensibles aux dimensions sociales de la technologie, considérant les nouvelles dynamiques qui s’y rattachent en regard des impacts de la technologie sur la société et dans les entreprises.

Les travaux étudiant la relation entre l’élevage des bovins et la qualité des carcasses ou de la viande portent généralement sur l’effet de facteurs d’élevage (de la période de finition) pris individuellement. Peu de recherches traitent de l’effet des pratiques d’élevage (combinaisons de plusieurs facteurs d’élevage) appliquées tout au long de la vie de l’animal sur la qualité de ces deux produits. Les objectifs de cette synthèse sont i) de mettre en évidence l’impact des pratiques d’élevage sur la qualité des carcasses et de la viande et ii) d’identifier des leviers d’action mobilisables au cours de la vie des génisses pour améliorer ces qualités. Les résultats montrent que les pratiques d’élevage mises en œuvre lors des différentes phases de vie des génisses (allaitement, croissance, finition) peuvent avoir des effets sur la qualité des carcasses et de la viande. Les propriétés des carcasses apparaissent plus sensibles aux changements de pratiques d’élevage que celles de la viande. A chaque période de vie, un ou plusieurs facteurs d’élevage permettent d’améliorer la qualité des carcasses (n = 9) et/ou de la viande (n = 3). Seul l’âge à l’abattage est commun au pilotage de la qualité des carcasses et de la viande, tous les autres sont spécifiques. Les leviers identifiés n’ont pas d’effets antagonistes sur la qualité de ces deux produits. Ainsi en élevage, grâce à des pratiques adaptées tout au long de la vie des génisses, un pilotage conjoint de la qualité des carcasses et de la viande est possible.

Si la conception par Merleau-Ponty de la chair comme élément prolonge celle d’Aristote, ce dernier l’associe au toucher appréhendé comme “sens de la nourriture”. On analysera dans quelle mesure le nouveau paradigme de la conception des créatures virtuelles ressortit à l’approche aristotélicienne qui fonde la sagacité de la faculté de connaître sur les qualités sensibles de la chair et sur la faculté première de la nourriture. On examinera en quoi la dépendance des créatures virtuelles (tamagoshi, virtual pets) à l’égard d’un don de nourriture relève d’une conception de l’autonomie irréductible à l’autosuffisance.

Cette question laisserait entrevoir la possible spécificité de l’art-thérapie au regard d’indications particulières… À chaque institution, son type de publics, son type de prise en charge et de là son type d’art-thérapeutes et artthérapies… Cela correspond-t-il à une réalité, à un besoin ou seulement à un mythe ? Si notre propos n’est pas de définir les besoins de ces nombreuses structures, ce qui serait une entreprise bien présomptueuse, nous pouvons toutefois cerner les grandes lignes d’une réalité de terrain et de son offre de formation en matière d’artthérapies. C’est évidemment la grande diversité des publics et des institutions les accompagnant qui rend sensible cette question de la formation des professionnels art-thérapeutes. Faut-il une formation spécifique, une spécialisation dans la spécialisation que représente déjà l’art-thérapie, pour travailler en psychiatrie, ou en Ehpad, ou ailleurs ? Quels types de connaissances sont-ils requis dans tous ces cas si nombreux que l’art-thérapeute est susceptible de rencontrer dans son parcours professionnel ? Loin d’ignorer ces savoirs spécifiques, nous nous demanderons d’abord « qui est l’art-thérapeute », et quelles qualités humaines et sensibles il doit présenter ? De quoi a-t-il besoin pour exercer et pour qui ? Quels moyens les formations mettent-elles ou non en œuvre ? Quelle idée de l’art-thérapie et quelle idée de la formation des art-thérapeutes véhiculent l’ensemble des professionnels, mais aussi des médias et du grand public ? Il n’est pas rare d’entendre qu’il existe autant d’art-thérapies qu’il y a d’art-thérapeutes… Nous pourrions ajouter : autant d’art-thérapies qu’il y a de formations d’art-thérapeutes… Alors faut-il former des art-thérapeutes, et pour qui, pour quoi ? Si oui, se pose la question du « comment former ces nouveaux professionnels ». Nous tenterons de développer ces différentes pistes de réflexion avec notre regard d’art-thérapeute, de notre place de dirigeante d’un centre de formation en art-thérapie pluriexpressionnelle.

Cet essai porte sur les mécanismes qui permettent les échanges équitables entre différents ordres de valeur, dans la production de la société et de l’histoire. Alors que les équivalences entre monnaies, la normalisation et la conversion sont présentes dans la plupart des théories sur l’argent et la marchandisation, leur nature en tant que processus social n’a pas été suffisamment étudiée, surtout dans la construction du caractère universalisant des idéologies et des régimes politiques et économiques modernes. Notre analyse examine la confrontation des différents régimes de valeur à l’occasion de la rencontre entre les Tswana d’Afrique du Sud et les colonisateurs européens, ainsi que les conflits et la médiation complexe auxquels ce processus a donné lieu. Le bétail, les pièces de monnaie et les contrats, qui avaient la possibilité à la fois de renforcer et de nier les différences, ont rapidement été investis de qualités magiques. Mais les peuples colonisés étaient également sensibles à la faculté de ces monnaies de faciliter ou d’empêcher la convertibilité, et connaissaient les formes d’abstraction et d’incorporation qu’ils impliquaient. C’est pourquoi, en Afrique du Sud et ailleurs, ces monnaies ont souvent servi de moyen de contestation de la valeur autour de laquelle les luttes coloniales se sont jouées.

LE. CHOIX DE L'IMAGE EROTIQUE comme terrain d'enquête relève d'une stratégie de recherche qui consiste à aborder un problème par l'étude d'un cas limite. Le pari heuristique qui est ainsi fait ·consiste à poser "hypothèse que le phénomène considéré n'est pas une anomalie, mais, au contraire, révèle des caractéristiques essentielles par une exagération naturelle de ses traits les plus importants. Le problème de la lecture de l'image vise en effet une expérience qui, pour être commune, triviale même, nlen est pas moins extrêmement complexe, et, à bien des égards, mystérieuse, magique presque, voilée de cette illusion q�'est la transparence ou la simplicité. Pour conceptualiser et problématiser ce mode particulier de l'existence quotidienne, il convient de construire l'interface qui unit pour le temps de la «lecture » d'une part un système neurophysiologique et cognitif et d'autre part un ou plusieurs objets doués de qualités sensibles, morphologiques, culturelles, économiques et sociales particulières. Naturellement, comme c'est le cas pour toute interface, ces deux côtés de la « lecture» ne constituent pas des univers séparés mais font partie d'une seule et même complexité. n-est néanmoins nécessaire, pour les besoins de la recherche, de construire une interface simplifiée avec des variables groupées en configurations provisoirement séparées. C'est pourquoi l'accentuation des traits fournie par les cas limites offre un objet privilégié à l'opportunisme méthodologique, sorte de créneau scientifique que le chercheur se doit d'explorer.

La thèse porte sur l'un des sujets les moins étudiés de la philosophie de la nature aristotélicienne latine médiévale (ca. 1250-ca. 1350), à savoir le soi-disant sujet des "minima sensibilia". Si, comme il est affirmé notamment dans "Physique" VI, les grandeurs sont infiniment divisibles en puissance, un dilemme se pose quant aux limites de divisibilité des qualités sensibles à travers la division de la matière (considérée comme une grandeur étendue) à laquelle elles sont unies. Soit les qualités sensibles sont aussi infiniment divisibles en puissance (mais cela implique que les sens doivent avoir un pouvoir infini pour les percevoir, contrairement à un présupposé aristotélicien fondamental concernant les limites de tout pouvoir existant dans la nature), soit elles ne sont pas infiniment divisibles en puissance (dans ce cas, cependant, il y aurait des portions de matière qui ne peuvent être connues ni par les sens ni, évidemment, par l'intellect, et, ce qui est pire, les entités sensibles seraient finalement composées par elles, ce qui est tout à fait inacceptable dans la vision du monde aristotélicienne). Pour résoudre le dilemme, Aristote, au chapitre 6 du "De sensu et sensato" (445b3-446a20), fait usage de la distinction entre acte et puissance, affirmant que les qualités sensibles sont infiniment divisibles en puissance en tant que parties du tout auquel elles appartiennent, mais qu'il y a des quantités minimales de matière qui peuvent exister en acte par elles-mêmes douées de leurs qualités sensibles. If, as claimed most notably in "Physics" VI, magnitudes are (potentially) infinitely divisible, a dilemma arises with respect to the limits of the divisibility of sensible qualities through the division of the matter (considered as an extended magnitude) with which they are united. Either sensible qualities are also (potentially) infinitely divisible (but this implies that the senses should have an infinite power in order to perceive them, against a fundamental Aristotelian assumption concerning the limits of every power existing in nature), or they are not (potentially) infinitely divisible (in this case, however, there would be portions of matter that can neither be cognised by the senses nor, evidently, by the intellect, and, what is worse, sensible entities would be ultimately composed of them, something entirely unacceptable in the Aristotelian worldview). To solve the dilemma, Aristotle, in Chapter 6 of the "De sensu et sensato" (445b3-446a20), makes use of the distinction between act and potency, affirming that sensible qualities are infinitely divisible in potency as part of the whole to which they belong, but there are minimal quantities of matter that can exist in act on their own endowed with their sensible qualities. The thesis investigates the reflection conducted by Medieval Latin commentators of the "De sensu et sensato" (always read in connection with their Greek and Islamic sources) on the subject of "minima sensibilia", using it as a privileged gateway to study from a new and original point of view the Medieval Latin conception of the ontology and of the epistemology of sensible qualities. Indeed, through a close scrutiny of the debate (which is accompanied by a thorough reconstruction of the complex manuscript tradition of Medieval Latin "De sensu" commentaries, that have hitherto been largely neglected by scholars) it is demonstrated that Medieval Latin commentators progressively developed a conception according to which sensible qualities can exist on their own in the natural world without being perceptible in act due to the smallness of the matter with which they are united. Such sensible qualities (that are sometimes called "insensibilia propter parvitatem") can, nevertheless, become perceptible in act by uniting with each other. Thanks to this fundamental development, not only sensible qualities started to be understood mostly in autonomy from their role in perception, but the sensible world became suddenly much more extended than the world that can be perceived by the senses, with the consequence that the confidence in the human ability to cognise its ultimate structure began to crumble

With the advent of portable devices (e.g., smartphones) and the advances in wireless networking technologies (e.g., WLAN, GPRS, UMTS), the vision of ubiquitous computing is becoming a reality. It aims to facilitate user tasks through the seamless utilization of heterogeneous computing and communication capabilities (represented as services) available in the environment. Service discovery, which is necessary for achieving the above goal, must be aware of the service's non-functional properties due to the challenges posed by ubiquitous computing, such as device portability and mobility. This thesis proposes an overall solution that supports QoS-aware service discovery in ubiquitous computing environments. Our contribution lies in substantiating QoS awareness in the following three aspects. Firstly, during the process of discovering services, the expiring wireless links resulting from device mobility are identified and avoided since they cause service failures and thus hamper service reliability. Secondly, as mu tiple services can be discovered, a comprehensive utility function is proposed to evaluate services in terms of their various non-functional properties, meanwhile taking into account the service user's preferences among them, for the purpose of selecting the best one. Thirdly, to avoid untrustworthy services, a distributed reputation mechanism is proposed to facilitate the evaluation of the service host's trustworthiness. The above three proposed solutions are extensively evaluated respectively, based on analysis and simulation. They are further incorporated into a middleware that supports QoS aware Web service discovery in ubiquitous computing environments. A prototype implementing the middleware is deployed and evaluated. The results show that the overhead introduced by QoS awareness seems reasonable.

Dans les environnements pervasifs, le constant changement du contexte d'utilisation des applications et des services distribués (i. E. , des ressources) impose de nouvelles exigences pour la définition des solutions de contrôle d'accès. Celles-ci concernait notamment la sensibilité au contexte et la mise en œuvre distribuée des politiques d'accès. Pour prendre en compte ces besoins, nous proposons une famille de modèles de contrôle d'accès, appelé CxtBAC (Context-Based Access Control), qui se compose de huit modèles conceptuels et permet d'explorer les informations contextuelles caractérisant les entités suivantes : le propriétaire de la ressource, l'environnement, l'utilisateur et la ressource elle-même. Contrairement aux propositions existantes, basées sur le modèle RBAC (Role-Based Access Control), la famille de modèle proposé est centrée sur la notion de contexte et non de rôle. Par conséquent, les décisions d'accès aux ressources protégées sont prises en considérant les informations contextuelles qui caractérisent la situation des entités impliquées. Pour décrire les règles d'accès, les permissions sont associées à des contextes d'accès et les utilisateurs sont associés dynamiquement à ces dernières. Les modèles proposés sont indépendants du langage de spécification de la politique de sécurité. Generaly, the existing access control solutions make static user-permission associations and are unaware of the situation (context) when defining and enforcing access control policies. In order to address these issues, we propose a family of Context-Based Access Control models, named CxtBAC (Context-Based Access Control), which is composed by eight conceptual models that can be used as basis to construct context-based access control solutions. CxtBAC models explore contextual information as central concept for assigning permissions to users. In fact, context information can describe the situation of resource owners, resource requestors, resources, and the environment around them. Unlike existing access control proposals such as RBAC-based solutions (Role-Based Access Control), CxtBAC makes access decisions taking into account the contextual information that characterizes the situation of involved entities (e. G. , resource owner and resource requestor). In a CxtBAC access rule, a set of permission is associated with an access context and users are dynamically associated with that access context. CxtBAC is independent of security policy language used to describe access control policies. Based on theory and copious empirical evidence, environmental economists have recognized the dependence of environmental conditions on economic growth. This dependence is well enumerated in the EKC Hypothesis, which asserts that there exists an inverted U-shaped relationship between measured per capita income and measured level environmental quality such that, economic growth initially portends danger to the environment owing to initial economic pressures, which eventually improves beyond certain threshold of growth. During the initial stages of growth, however, environmental conditions arguably could be made impervious to economic pressures when governments take stiffened stance to strengthen institutions and make them more effective. On the strength of the above thoughts, we have attempted in this empirical work to probe into new evidence on the role of institutions in modulating and moderating the gruesome effects of growth on the environment in the context of Nigeria. While pursuing this empirical course, the study, like others drew on theoretical framings of the classic EKC hypothesis and adopted the ARDL methodical procedure to estimate baseline and interaction models. However, unlike previous studies carried out in Nigeria, the current study adopted a broad- based approach by converting and aggregating the three pervasive environmental pollutants (CO2, NO2 and CH4) in Nigeria into single unit of measurement by means of their CO2 equivalent. Given the core of the study, two models- baseline and interaction- have been estimated and examined based on the conventional statistical and econometric criteria. The results from the baseline model led to the conclusion that EKC holds for Nigeria while those from the interaction model revealed that institutions are important in the environmental project as they play significant role in moderating the harmful effect of economic growth on the environment.

Avec l'apparition des paradigmes de l'intelligence ambiante et de la robotique ubiquitaire, on assiste à l'émergence de nouveaux systèmes intelligents ambiants visant à créer et gérer des environnements ou écosystèmes intelligents d'une façon intuitive et transparente. Ces environnements sont des espaces intelligents caractérisés notamment par l'ouverture, l'hétérogénéité, l'incertitude et la dynamicité des entités qui les constituent. Ces caractéristiques soulèvent ainsi des défis scientifiques considérables pour la conception et la mise en œuvre d'un système intelligent adéquat. Ces défis sont principalement au nombre de cinq : l'abstraction de la représentation des entités hétérogènes, la gestion des incertitudes, la réactivité aux événements, la sensibilité au contexte et l'auto-adaptation face aux changements imprévisibles qui se produisent dans l'environnement ambiant. L'approche par composition dynamique de services constitue l'une des réponses prometteuses à ces défis. Dans cette thèse, nous proposons un système intelligent capable d'effectuer une composition dynamique de services en tenant compte, d'une part, du contexte d'utilisation et des diverses fonctionnalités offertes par les services disponibles dans un environnement ambiant et d'autre part, des besoins variables exprimés par les utilisateurs. Ce système est construit suivant un modèle multicouche, adaptatif et réactif aux événements. Il repose aussi sur l'emploi d'un modèle de connaissances expressif permettant une ouverture plus large vers les différentes entités de l'environnement ambiant notamment : les dispositifs, les services, les événements, le contexte et les utilisateurs. Ce système intègre également un modèle de découverte et de classification de services afin de localiser et de préparer sémantiquement les services nécessaires à la composition de services. Cette composition est réalisée d'une façon automatique et dynamique en deux phases principales: la phase offline et la phase online. Dans la phase offline, un graphe global reliant tous les services abstraits disponibles est généré automatiquement en se basant sur des règles de décision sur les entrées et les sorties des services. Dans la phase online, des sous-graphes sont extraits automatiquement à partir du graphe global selon les tâches à réaliser qui sont déclenchées par des événements qui surviennent dans l'environnement ambiant. Les sous-graphes ainsi obtenus sont exécutés suivant un modèle de sélection et de monitoring de services pour tenir compte du contexte d'utilisation et garantir une meilleure qualité de service. Mètodes: Estudi d’una cohort prospectiva en que es van incloure durant 14 mesos consecutius els pacients ingressats a l’UCI de l’Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron sotmesos a ventilació mecànica durant més de 48 hores. Es va valorar la qualitat de vida relacionada amb la salut a l’ingrés mitjançant els qüestionaris SF-36 i Qüestionari Respiratori de Saint Georges (QRSG) i a l’alta de l’UCI. Els mateixos qüestionaris es van repetir a l’any de l’alta. Els Resultats Sensibles a Intervenció d’Infermeria (RSII) i les variables clíniques relacionades amb la patologia i l’evolució es van recollir de la documentació clínica diàriament. Es va realitzar una anàlisi descriptiva i analítica de la relació entre les variables principals.
Resultats: La cohort inicial va estar formada per 184 pacients, a l’any se’n van poder estudiar 151. En els components resum (físic i mental) de l’SF-36 i la puntuació total del QRSG existien diferències estadísticament significatives entre la valoració a l’ingrés i a l’any (p= 0,001; p=0,001 i p<0,001 respectivament).Cap dels RSII van presentar associació estadísticament significativa amb els components resum de l’SF-36 ni amb cap dimensió del QRSG.
Conclusions: Els pacients que van requerir ventilació mecànica durant el seu ingrés a l’UCI van presentar millor qualitat de vida a l'any de la seva alta que la que presentaven a l’ingrés, però va continuar sent pitjor que la de la població de referència. No es va poder determinar que existís relació entre els resultats sensibles a intervencions infermeres i la qualitat de vida a l’any dels pacients.Objetivo: Valorar la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud en pacientes sometidos a ventilación mecánica en una Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos y su relación con los resultados sensibles a intervenciones enfermeras. Métodos: Estudio de una cohorte prospectiva en que se incluyeron durante 14 meses consecutivos los pacientes ingresados en la UCI del Hospital Universitario Vall d'Hebron sometidos a ventilación mecánica durante más de 48 horas. Se valoró la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud en el ingreso mediante los cuestionarios SF-36 y Cuestionario Respiratorio de Saint Georges (QRSG) y al alta de la UCI. Los mismos cuestionarios se repitieron al año del alta. Los Resultados Sensibles a Intervención de Enfermería (RSIE) y las variables clínicas relacionadas con la patología y la evolución se recogieron de la documentación clínica diariamente. Se realizó un análisis descriptivo y analítico de la relación entre las variables principales. Resultados: La cohorte inicial estuvo formada por 184 pacientes, al año se pudieron estudiar 151. En los componentes resumen (físico y mental) de l’SF-36 y la puntuación total del QRSG existían diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre la valoración al ingreso y al año (p = 0,001; p = 0,001 y p <0,001 respectivamente). Los componentes resumen de l’SF-36 (Físico = 46, Mental = 47) y la puntuación total del QRSG (12 vs 8) tuvieron peores resultados al año que la población de referencia. Ninguno de los RSIE presentaron asociación estadísticamente significativa con los componentes resumen del SF-36 ni con el QRSG. Conclusiones: Los pacientes que requirieron ventilación mecánica durante su ingreso en la UCI presentaron mejor calidad de vida al año del alta que la que presentaban al ingreso, aunque continuó siendo peor que la de la población de referencia. No se pudo determinar relación entre los resultados sensibles a intervenciones enfermeras y la calidad de vida al año de los pacientes.
Objective: To assess the HRQL of mechanically ventilated patients admitted to ICU and its relation to nurse-sensitive outcomes (NSO). Methods: A prospective cohort of admitted to d'Hebron University Hospital ICU who underwent mechanical ventilation for more than 48 hours were included for 14 consecutive months. Health-related quality of life at admission and discharge from ICU was assessed using the SF-36 and Saint Georges Respiratory (QRSG) questionnaires. The same questionnaires were also utilised 1 year after ICU discharge. Nursing Sensitive Outcomes (NSO) and clinical variables related to patient’s diagnosis and clinical course were collected from patient records on a daily basis. A descriptive and analytical analysis of variables’ relationship performed. Results: The initial cohort consisted of 184 patients. Follow-up a year after discharge was done on 151 patients. In the summary components (physical and mental) of the SF-36 as well as the total score of the QRSG there were statistically significant differences between the assessment performed at ICU admission and the one performed a year after ICU discharge (p = 0.001, p = 0.001 and p <0.001, respectively). The summary components of the SF-36 (Physical = 46, Mental = 47) and the total QRSG score (12 vs 8) results obtained a1 year after ICU discharge were worse if compared with the ones obtained from the reference population. None of the NSO had a statistically significant association with the SF-36 summary components or any dimension of the QRSG. Conclusions: Patients who required mechanical ventilation during ICU admission had better quality of life 1 year after ICU discharge when compared with ICU admission, but was worse when compared with the reference population. It was not possible to determine if there is a relationship between NSO and quality of life a year after ICU discharge.

Les paramètres comportementaux sont de plus en plus considérés comme étant des indicateurs sensibles et précoces de toxicité chez les organismes aquatiques. Cependant, l’utilisation du comportement natatoire comme critère de toxicité pour l’analyse de risque environnemental ou pour le contrôle de la qualité de l’eau reste pour l’heure encore limitée. En effet, il est actuellement difficile de quantifier la sensibilité des paramètres comportementaux et d’établir un lien entre les seuils d’effets comportementaux et les effets aigus et subaigus classiquement mesurés dans les tests en écotoxicologie. Dans le but d’améliorer notre compréhension des effets comportementaux des polluants sur Daphnia magna, nous avons développé un nouveau système de mesure du comportement multi-cuves baptisé «Multi-DaphTrack ». Douze substances toxiques, couvrant une large gamme de modes d’action différents ont été testées dans ce système. Un test standard d’immobilisation ainsi que des analyses de comportement dans le toximètre DaphToxI®, ont également été effectués pour chaque substance afin de comparer les seuilsd’effets comportementaux avec les paramètres classiques d’immobilisation. Les résultats des expositions aux différentes substances ont démontré que notre nouveau système d’exposition multi-cuves permet de détecter des effets comportementaux (i.e.,augmentation de la vitesse de nage) significatifs et précoces pour l’ensemble des substances testées et ce, à des concentrations proches de la CE10(48 h) du test aigu d’immobilisation dès la première heure d’exposition. Des profils comportementaux différents ont été observés selon les substances testées (i.e., intensité, temps de latence et durée de l’effet) mais ceux-ci ne sont pas spécifiques d’un mode d’action particulier. Les résultats obtenus avec le toximètre DaphToxI®ont révélé des profils d’effet similaires (i.e.,augmentation de la vitesse de nage) bien que ce système soit globalement moins sensible par rapport au système «Multi-DaphTrack». Pour conclure, notre nouveau système d’exposition multi-cuves «Multi-DaphTrack» est un outil plus sensible et précoce que letest standard d’immobilisation pour l’évaluation de la toxicité de substances chimiques. L’utilisation du système «Multi-DaphTrack» pourrait donc être envisagée, après quelques améliorations et validation supplémentaires, pour l’évaluation de la qualité des masses d’eauet des effluentsSwimming behavior is increasingly reported as a sensitive and early indicator of toxicant stress in aquatic organisms. However, it remains unclear how to quantify the sensitivity of swimming behavioral endpoints and how to compare these effect thresholds with standard ecotoxicological endpoints used in risk assessment. To date, the systematic assessment of the sensitivity of swimming behavioral endpoints in daphnia is limited because of the restrained test capacity of existing behavioral analysis systems. Hence, we developed a new behavioral analysis multi-cellsystemnamed “Multi-DaphTrack” with a high throughput testing capacity in order to enhance our understanding of swimming behavioral effects in Daphnia magnaunder chemical exposure. Twelve compounds covering different modes oftoxic action were selected and tested in this new system andin a single-cell commercialized biomonitor (DaphToxI®) and with the acute standard test.Our new multi-cellexposure system detectedsignificant and early swimming behavioral effects (i.e.,increase of the average speed) for most of the tested compounds and this, from the first hour of exposure at concentrations near the EC10(48h). Contrastedbehavioral profiles were observed for average speed (i.e., intensity, time of effect onset, effect duration), but no distinct behavioral profiles could be drawn from the chemical mode of action. Despite less sensitive,the DaphToxI®gave similar trends (i.e.,rapid peak increase) compared to our “Multi-DaphTrack” system. To conclude, behavior analysis using our “Multi-DaphTrack”systemcould be used as an alternative or complement to the current acute standard test for toxicity assessment of chemicals. Les micro-capteurs chimiques à oxydes métalliques sont les meilleurs candidats pour résoudre cette problématique : ils présentent une grande sensibilité à de nombreux gaz, des temps de réponse rapides, et leur coût de production est faible. Leur principal défaut est un manque de sélectivité. Les travaux de recherches effectués ont consisté à mettre au point un micro-dispositif intégrant un réseau multicapteur de gaz à détection conductimétrique : sur une même puce micro-usinée en silicium sont intégrées plusieurs couches sensibles différentes, visant à détecter sélectivement plusieurs gaz : le monoxyde de carbone (CO), le dioxyde d'azote (NO2), l'ammoniac (NH3), l'acétaldéhyde (C2H4O) et le sulfure d'hydrogène (H2S). The proposed solution for this problem is the development of a gas sensor capable of detecting pollutants entering in the vehicle, resulting in the closing of vents in the case of a pollution peak. Metal-oxides chemical micro-sensors are the best candidates to solve this problem: they are highly sensitive to many gases, fast response times, and their production cost is low. Their main drawback is a lack of selectivity. The research work consisted of developing a micro-device incorporating a gas multi-sensor array based on conductivity detection: different sensitive layers are integrated on a single silicon micro-machined chip, in order to selectively detect several gases: carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide nitrogen (NO2), ammonia (NH3), acetaldehyde (C2H4O) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). To do this, three main areas of research have emerged. The first part of this study focused on the design of the heating micro-platforms using a multiphysics simulations tool to optimize, on the one hand, their structure and geometry to achieve the expected thermal performances (thermoelectric efficiency optimization and minimizing interaction of a cell to another), and on the other hand, the thermo-mechanical performance given the possibility to use sensors in a fast thermal transient mode. The resulting model was validated by comparison with physical measurements. This has allowed us to improve the thermal behavior of the membrane surface and reduce manufacturing costs by simplifying the design. The manufacturing in clean room of the multisensor platform was then performed taking into account the improvements proposed by the modeling. A specific study on the integration process of an industrial technique to deposit sensitive materials by inkjet was conducted. A method for depositing quickly and at low costs several sensitive layers (ZnO, CuO and SnO2) on a single sensing structure has been developed. Finally, we proceeded to develop a decision-making system, including two elements: the development of an optimized profile to control the heating and sensitive resistors to improve the sensitivity, selectivity and stability, and a data multivariate analysis. It has therefore been possible to selectively detect most of the target gas (alone and mixed) at low concentrations (NO2-0. 2ppm, C2H4O-2ppm, NH3-5ppm and CO-100ppm)

De nos jours, la façon d'utiliser les applications mobiles dans le domaine des transports offre de nouveaux défis liés aux spécificités de l'environnement, comme la forte mobilité des terminaux, leur répartition, ou encore le réseau instable de communication. La plupart des applications existantes ont des contraintes de fonctionnement qui les rendent inadaptées si les conditions d'exécution évoluent rapidement. Cela rend intéressant l'utilisation d'un cadre unifié de conception et d'exécution, capable de gérer ces applications. Nos travaux portent, dans un premier temps, sur une étude des applications mobiles et de leur comportement, en fonction du contexte d'exécution. Nous considérons le cas des applications dédiées aux transports, conçues pour accompagner et assister un usager dans son déplacement (navigation, sécurité routière, applications des moyens de transports, etc.). Nous identifions les éléments du contexte propres aux applications fortement mobiles et les modélisons. Dans un second temps, nous proposons un cadre dynamique et sensible au contexte, permettant le déploiement de nouveaux services " à la volée " ainsi que leur adaptation pour une meilleure utilisation des ressources dans des milieux très évolutifs. Nous nous focalisons sur le côté réactif, permettant d'adapter le comportement des applications à leurs nouvelles conditions d'utilisation. Les applications sont décomposées en services de base avec un couplage lâche pour une plus grande flexibilité. Nous utilisons une architecture orientée service, qui permet la réutilisation des services communs à plusieurs applications mais aussi la gestion du contexte au travers de services équivalents mais capables de fonctionner dans des conditions différentes.Nous montrons, grâce au prototype de notre plateforme CATS (Context-Aware Transportation Services), d'abord la faisabilité d'une plateforme à services sur des terminaux portables. Nous testons ensuite plusieurs scénarios afin de démontrer la réactivité des adaptations aux changements de contexte. Dans cette thèse nous proposons une vue d'ensemble sur la création et la gestion des applications sensibles au contexte pour le domaine des transports. Le but de notre démarche est d'assurer le bon fonctionnement de l'ensemble des applications d'un utilisateur, malgré les changements dynamiques du contexte.

Descartes’s earliest theory of perception attempts to marry the remnants of the Baconian and Aristotelian views while divorcing them from hylomorphism and the innocent view of sensible qualities. Descartes holds the ‘overlap thesis,’ the claim that any behavior exhibited by non-human animals and inattentive humans must receive the same explanation. Corporeal perception requires the presence of a brain image that resembles its object. When the mind attends to its environment, it is immediately aware of this brain image and, through it, of the common sensibles. The claim that the mind ‘turns toward’ the brain is a thoroughly traditional one. The proper sensibles are summoned by the mind on the occasion of its undergoing certain brain events. Descartes thinks of the mind as ‘decoding’ the language of the brain in order to provide itself with the appropriate sensations. But those sensations do nothing to explain our awareness of objects.

Whereas the Principles is an attack on materialist mechanism primarily via its representative theory of perception, the First Dialogue is an attack on materialist mechanism primarily via its primary/secondary-quality distinction. Viewing the First Dialogue in this light allows us to see it as more effective and insightful than we otherwise might, although it also requires us to acknowledge that Hylas is never as philosophically naïve as Berkeley sometimes seems to suggest.

Pleasures and pains play an important role for Berkeley, not just in motivating action, but also by providing knowledge of the physical world in which we act. This chapter considers the parallels that Berkeley draws between sensible quality perceptions and pleasures/pains. Importantly, Berkeley holds that we can have intuitive or demonstrative knowledge of the existence and nature of the physical world on the basis of our sensory perceptions. His parallel analysis of pleasures and pains thus surprisingly implies that these, too, can provide us with intuitive or demonstrative knowledge of the physical world. Taking pleasures and pains to have an epistemic and cognitive function allows us to reread certain Berkeleyan texts in ways that are illuminating. This includes texts on the laws of nature, which enable us to regulate actions precisely because knowledge of the natural laws involves generalizing over regularities of sensory perceptions, which include pleasures/pains.

The seventeenth century witnesses the demise of two core doctrines in the theory of perception: naïve realism about color, sound, and other sensible qualities and the empirical theory, drawn from Alhacen and Roger Bacon, that underwrote it. Ejecting such sensible qualities from the mind-independent world at once makes for a cleaner ontology, since bodies can now be understood in purely geometrical terms, and spawns a variety of fascinating complications for the philosophy of perception. If sensible qualities are not part of the mind-independent world, just what are they, and what role, if any, do they play in our cognitive economy? We seemingly have to use color to visually experience objects. Do we do so by inferring size, shape, and motion from color? Or is it a purely automatic operation, accomplished by divine decree? This book traces the debate over perceptual experience in early modern France, covering such figures as Antoine Arnauld, Robert Desgabets, and Pierre-Sylvain Régis alongside their better-known countrymen René Descartes and Nicolas Malebranche.

The chapter explores Descartes’s notion of an idea and uses a developmental reading to clear up the mystery surrounding material falsity. In the third Meditation, our protagonist does not yet know enough about extension in order to be able to tell whether her idea of cold is an idea of a real feature of bodies or merely the idea of a sensation. By the time she reaches the end of her reflections, she has learned that sensible qualities are at most sensations. As in his earliest stages, Descartes believes that the real work of perceiving the geometrical qualities of bodies is done by the brain image, which he persists in calling an ‘idea,’ at least when it is the object of mental awareness.

La Forge opts for a version of Descartes’s last view, which has no place for natural geometry. Desgabets defends a version of Descartes’s earliest view, which requires the mind to turn to the brain image. Régis thinks we sense colors and sounds and the rest and then use these to imagine extension. Arnauld’s case is especially problematic, since he rejects the mind-independent existence of sensible qualities but seems committed to some version of direct realism. He is then left with the question how the mind projects these illusory states on to extended bodies, a question for which he has no answer.

Is the thing that a word stands for, its reference, fully identified or described by conventions known to the users of the word? Or is there a more roundabout relation between the reference of a word and the conventions that determine or fix it? Do words like “water,” “three,” and “red” refer to appropriate things, just as the word “Aristotle” refers to Aristotle? If so, which things are these, and how do they come to be referred to by those words? In Roads to Reference, Mario Gómez-Torrente provides novel answers to these and other questions that have been of traditional interest in the theory of reference. The book introduces a number of cases of apparent indeterminacy of reference for proper names, demonstratives, and natural kind terms, which suggest that reference-fixing conventions for them adopt the form of lists of merely sufficient conditions for reference and reference failure. Arguments are then provided for a new anti-descriptivist picture of those kinds of words, according to which the reference-fixing conventions for them do not describe their reference. The book also defends realist and objectivist accounts of the reference of ordinary natural kind nouns, numerals, and adjectives for sensible qualities. According to these accounts, these words refer, respectively, to “ordinary kinds,” cardinality properties, and properties of membership in intervals of sensible dimensions, and these things are fixed in subtle ways by associated reference-fixing conventions.

Allerdings ist hier der Konflikt mit dem Artenschutz im Allgemeinen und dem Fledermausschutz im Speziellen besonders hoch. In diesem Beitrag beleuchten wir vor dem Hintergrund des gesetzlich vorgegebenen normativen Rahmens den artenschutzrechtlichen Teil der Windkraftplanung im Wald mit Bezug auf Fledermäuse – von der Untersuchungsplanung über die eingesetzten Methoden bis zur Bewertung. Bezogen auf Fledermäuse stehen hier insbesondere die Vermeidung der direkten Tötung sowie die Verminderung der Beeinträchtigung ihres Lebensraums im Fokus der Betrachtung. Bundesland-spezifische Arbeitshilfen stecken den Untersuchungsumfang, die einzusetzenden Erfassungsmethoden und den räumlichen und zeitlichen Untersuchungsrahmen ab. Sie empfehlen zudem Maßnahmen zur Kompensation potenziell negativer Auswirkungen eines Eingriffs. Ihr Effekt auf die methodische Qualität der Fachbeiträge zu Fledermäusen ist jedoch gering. Meist kommen im Rahmen der speziellen artenschutzrechtlichen Prüfung zu Fledermäusen die Quartierbaumsuche, Netzfang, unterschiedliche Varianten des akustischen Monitorings (aktiv und passiv) sowie die Radiotelemetrie zum Einsatz. Insbesondere bei der bevorzugt empfohlenen akustischen Erfassung mindern zahlreiche methodische Probleme auf der technischen und der analytischen Ebene die Aussagekraft. Auch der Erfolg des Fangs von Fledermäusen mit Netzen hängt von zahlreichen Parametern ab. Die Quartierbaumerfassung lässt sich in ihrem Erfolg deutlich durch die Radiotelemetrie verbessern. Zur sinnvollen Quantifizierung des Lebensraumanspruchs einer Fledermauspopulation jedoch werden mittels Radiotelemetrie in der Regel zu wenige Tiere zu kurz untersucht. Die Bewertung der erhobenen Daten, hier gezeigt anhand akustisch ermittelter Aktivitätsdichten, erfolgt subjektiv, da Bewertungskriterien fehlen. Die am häufigsten empfohlenen und somit umgesetzten Methoden der Konfliktvermeidung und -minimierung sind CEF- (= Continued Ecological Function) und FCS-Maßnahmen (= Favourable Conservation Status) sowie das Gondelmonitoring und die selektive Abschaltung der WEA. Auch diese Maßnahmen entfalten z. T. Schwächen; die Bewahrung und Entwicklung von Waldstandorten als/zu ökologisch wertvollen Lebensräumen sowie die Verminderung der Schlagopferzahl durch spezielle Algorithmen (ProBat-Tool) sehen wir jedoch als sinnvoll an. Abschließend formulieren wir Anregungen zur Verbesserung und Objektivierung der Eingriffsplanung von WEA im Wald.SummaryThe development of wind energy is concentrating in forests, as windy and thus economically favourable sites can often be found here. However, the conflict with species conservation in general and bat conservation in particular is especially high in forests. We here examine the impact assessment on bats in the context of the legally prescribed normative framework in wind farm planning in the forest – from the study design to the methods used and the assessment itself. With regard to bats, the focus here is on avoiding direct killing and reducing the impairment of their habitat. Guidance documents for the German federal states define the extent of the surveys, the survey methods, and the spatial and temporal scope of a survey. They also recommend measures to compensate for potential negative impacts of wind energy plants (WEP). However, their effect on the quality of the expert reports on bats is low. In most cases, the search for roost trees, mist netting, different types of acoustic monitoring (active and passive) and radio tracking are used. In particular, numerous methodological problems at the technical and analytical levels reduce the validity of acoustic surveys. The success of mist netting bats also depends on numerous parameters. The success of roost tree surveys can be significantly improved by radio tracking. However, for a meaningful quantification of the habitat requirements of a bat population, radio tracking is usually used on too few animals for too short a time. The evaluation of the collected data, shown here on the basis of acoustically determined activity densities, is subjective because evaluation criteria are lacking. The most frequently recommended and thus implemented methods of conflict mitigation are CEF (= Continued Ecological Function and FCS (= Favourable Conservation Status) measures as well as nacelle monitoring and selective shut-down of wind turbines. These measures also show some weaknesses, but we consider the maintenance and development of forest sites as or into ecologically valuable habitats, as well as the reduction of the number of bat fatalities by means of specific algorithms (ProBat tool), to be sensible. Finally, we make suggestions for improving and objectifying the impact assessment of wind-energy facilities in forests.

Nutrient-sensitive areas in the Northern Development Region were identified and delimited. They include sections of rivers in which wastewater is discharged from agglomerations in the region with a population bigger than 10,000 l.e. The modernization of the stations and the increase of the treatment plant would be the way to improve the situation.

Offering an overview on how the Dutch HEIs are tackling the problem, the aim of this study is twofold: (i) presenting the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) from a career development perspective and (ii) giving a qualitative evaluation of the entire process from the point of view of UTQ supervisors and lecturers. Finally concluding the relevance of such a professionalization programme.

This paper describes the initiative to incorporate the practice of quality software development (QSD) into our undergraduate curriculum concerning the engineering of software. We discuss how the constructivist’s method of problem-based learning (PBL) helps develop this QSD practice into our students’ daily learning. This paper expounds the idea of an architectural approach to building software solutions, which is supported by the industry’s emerging consensus that architectural components provide the kind of building blocks we need for developing today’s complex systems. Particularly, the technology of component-based development asks of us the required portions of productivity, quality, and rapid construction of software artifacts. Consequently, our pedagogic approach to QSD focuses on designing and building a sensible architecture characterized by objects of different services, which represent the cohesive collections of related functionality, accessed through some consistent interfaces that encapsulate the implementation. The paper outlines an QSD approach in terms of state-of-the-practice development processes modified for educational scenarios, through which our students could learn to acquire their collaborative software engineering experience in the current practice of architected application development. The paper concludes by discussing the criteria used to evaluate the working of the learning scenario and some lessons learned involved in incorporating PBL learning scenarios suitable for QSD.

Abstract Persons with thoracic spinal cord injury (SCI), also named as people with paraplegia (PA), are encouraged to participate in sport activities for sake of improving their quality of life and health. Yet, heat strain is a major consequence of SCI after which the body loses its ability to regulate its temperature. Disruption in body temperature regulation and instability in core temperature (Tcr) endangers the patient health especially when subjected to extreme ambient conditions or high level of physical activity. Since thermophysiology is disrupted after SCI, using conventional personal cooling methods may not be effective on PA in a way similar to that of able-bodied people (AB). Experimental studies evaluated the effect of phase change material (PCM) and ice cooling vests on thermal response of PA during exercise. Results showed no change in Tcr values for both types of vest during exercise. This study aims at studying the effectiveness of PCM cooling vest for PA during exercise at intensity level of 6.5 MET within 21.1–23.9 °C room temperature and 50% relative humidity. A multi-segmented bioheat model of PA coupled with PCM cooling vest model (fabric-PCM-PA model) was deployed to predict Tcr values at different design conditions of the vest. Segmental core and skin temperatures profiles and the sensible and latent heat losses were obtained for torso segments to assess the percentage of enhancement in the cooling vest performance. Results showed that Tcr value of the body and Tcr values of the torso segments didn’t change at different design conditions of the vest; yet sensible heat losses were increased for all torso segments and latent heat losses were reduced. Decreases in latent heat losses affected Tsk values at the torso. Simulations were performed using fabric-PCM model integrated with PA bioheat model applying variation of skin coverage area, melting point of PCM and combination of both designs. An effective design of the vest for PA was found when using PCM packet at 10°C melting point and coverage area about 40% of torso because sensible heat losses were the highest compared to the other design cases of the vest.

This paper describes the atmospheric air quality assessment, based on modeling dispersion and calculation of concentration of pollutants emitted from sources of pollution from the Republic of Moldova. There are presented the maps regarding the dispersion of NO2 from cars provenience on the main circulation arteries in the urban ecosistem of Chisinau in the case of 9m/s wind speed. There were investigate the physiological response of three species of trees Tilia cordata Mill Acer platanoides L; Pinus nigra J.F. from five sites zones with different pollution. There were analysed the following indices: dry weight and total water quantity, chlorophylls, amount that gradually were affected. The significant variations of chlorophylls concentration demonstrate that the photosynthetic system is highly sensible to pollution factors.

ChatGPT is getting increasing attention in both academic and professional settings. Since its release, there has been a discussion on how services such as ChatGPT may change education. Many teachers have shared that they use ChatGPT to help them generate assignment prompts, questions, and lesson plans in various subject areas. Mixed opinions have been shared with regard to the quality of materials created by ChatGPT. While some teachers believe that the materials are of reasonable quality, others worry that ChatGPT may not always generate accurate or reliable information and may reproduce biases and stereotypes that exist in the data it was trained on. In this study, I explore the research question of whether ChatGPT can really replace teachers in generating high-quality assessment questions. Specifically, I compare ChatGPT-generated questions with instructor-written questions that have been used in two classes at a public research University in the US. The preliminary results show that although ChatGPT can produce logically sensible questions, the quality is not always comparable to instructor-written ones. The ChatGPT-generated questions are not specific to student misconceptions and do not align with the learning objectives instructors have in mind, which often leads to such questions being relatively obvious and easy to answer. I further discuss the capabilities and limitations of ChatGPT in generating high-quality assessment questions. This study provides insights into how we may leverage advanced AI tools such as ChatGPT to support education.

The annular geometry represents an interesting alternative to the slab format for diffusion cooled RF excited CO2 lasers. Typical draw backs of this scheme are related to the difficulties encountered in extracting a good quality beam [1] and in uniformly distributing the power in the discharge. Some effective solutions to the latter problem have recently been found [2,3], We have focused our attention to the former problem, experimentally testing the use of a Talbot cavity together with a phase-correcting mirror on the 100 W class annular laser described in Ref.[1]. The extraction efficiency obtained so far with this scheme is half that of a simple plane-plane guided resonator producing a multimode beam. The beam quality on the other hand appears sensibly enhanced.

Until recently, attempts to take advantage of the large second-order optical nonlinearities of certain conjugated organic molecules in devices were limited to neat crystalline materials, since the requirements for a noncentrosymmetric bulk phase could be met with molecular and polymeric crystals that happen to condense in a noncentrosymmetric point group.[1] The large dipoles that are often observed in these molecules made the growth of optical quality and robust crystals difficult. More recently, mixed systems consisting of the nonlinear optical molecules incorporated into polymer glasses, liquid crystals, and liquid crystal polymers have been investigated.[2] The difficulties in processing that are required to obtain optical quality materials are reduced. For second-order nonlinearities, an alignment process, such as electric field poling, is required to break the center of symmetry inherent in these materials. However, the reduction in number density and alignment attainable with realistic poling fields requires molecules with exceptionally large nonlinear optical susceptibilities in order to obtain bulk materials with nonlinear coefficients large enough to produce sensible devices.

The necessity to improve broiler thermotolerance and live performance led to the following hypothesis: Appropriate comprehensive incubation treatments that include significant temperature management changes will promote angiogenesis and will improve acquisition of thermotolerance and carcass quality of heavy broilers through epigenetic adaptation. It was based on the following questions: 1. Can TM during embryogenesis of broilers induce a longer-lasting thermoregulatory memory (up to marketing age of 10 wk) that will improve acquisition of thermotolerance as well as increased breast meat yield in heavy broilers? 2. The improved sensible heat loss (SHL) suggests an improved peripheral vasodilation process. Does elevated temperature during incubation affect vasculogenesis and angiogenesis processes in the chick embryo? Will such create subsequent advantages for heavy broilers coping with adverse hot conditions? 3. What are the changes that occur in the PO/AH that induce the changes in the threshold response for heat production/heat loss based on the concept of epigenetic temperature adaptation? The original objectives of this study were as follow: a. to assess the improvement of thermotolerance efficiency and carcass quality of heavy broilers (~4 kg); b. toimproveperipheral vascularization and angiogenesis that improve sensible heat loss (SHL); c. to study the changes in the PO/AH thermoregulatory response for heat production/losscaused by modulating incubation temperature. To reach the goals: a. the effect of TM on performance and thermotolerance of broilers reared to 10 wk of age was studied. b. the effect of preincubation heating with an elevated temperature during the 1ˢᵗ 3 to 5 d of incubation in the presence of modified fresh air flow coupled with changes in turning frequency was elucidated; c.the effect of elevated temperature on vasculogenesis and angiogenesis was determined using in ovo and whole embryo chick culture as well as HIF-1α VEGF-α2 VEGF-R, FGF-2, and Gelatinase A (MMP2) gene expression. The effects on peripheral blood system of post-hatch chicks was determined with an infrared thermal imaging technique; c. the expression of BDNF was determined during the development of the thermal control set-point in the preoptic anterior hypothalamus (PO/AH). Background to the topic: Rapid growth rate has presented broiler chickens with seriousdifficulties when called upon to efficiently thermoregulate in hot environmental conditions. Being homeotherms, birds are able to maintain their body temperature (Tb) within a narrow range. An increase in Tb above the regulated range, as a result of exposure to environmental conditions and/or excessive metabolic heat production that often characterize broiler chickens, may lead to a potentially lethal cascade of irreversible thermoregulatory events. Exposure to temperature fluctuations during the perinatal period has been shown to lead to epigenetic temperature adaptation. The mechanism for this adaptation was based on the assumption that environmental factors, especially ambient temperature, have a strong influence on the determination of the “set-point” for physiological control systems during “critical developmental phases.” Recently, Piestunet al. (2008) demonstrated for the first time that TM (an elevated incubation temperature of 39.5°C for 12 h/d from E7 to E16) during the development/maturation of the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-thyroid axis (thermoregulation) and the hypothalamic-hypophyseal-adrenal axis (stress) significantly improved the thermotolerance and performance of broilers at 35 d of age. These phenomena raised two questions that were addressed in this project: 1. was it possible to detect changes leading to the determination of the “set point”; 2. Did TM have a similar long lasting effect (up to 70 d of age)? 3. Did other TM combinations (pre-heating and heating during the 1ˢᵗ 3 to 5 d of incubation) coupled with changes in turning frequency have any performance effect? The improved thermotolerance resulted mainly from an efficient capacity to reduce heat production and the level of stress that coincided with an increase in SHL (Piestunet al., 2008; 2009). The increase in SHL (Piestunet al., 2009) suggested an additional positive effect of TM on vasculogenesis and angiogensis. 4. In order to sustain or even improve broiler performance, TM during the period of the chorioallantoic membrane development was thought to increase vasculogenesis and angiogenesis providing better vasodilatation and by that SHL post-hatch.

The objectives of this project were to predict the performance of naturally and fan-ventilated greenhouses as a function of climate, type of crop, evaporative cooling and greenhouse size, and to estimate the effects of the two cooling systems on yield, quality and disease development in the different crops under study. Background In the competitive field of greenhouse cultivation, growers and designers in both the US and Israel are repeatedly forced to choose between naturally ventilated (NV) and fan ventilated (FV) cooling systems as they expand their ranges in an effort to remain profitable. The known advantages and disadvantages of each system do not presently allow a clear decision. Whether essentially zero operating costs can offset the less dependable cooling of natural ventilation systems is question this report hopes to answer. Major Conclusions US It was concluded very early on that FV greenhouses without evaporative pad cooling are not competitive with NV greenhouses during hot weather. During the first year, the US team found that average air temperatures were always higher in the FV houses, compared to the NV houses, when evaporative pad cooling was not used, regardless of ventilation rate in the FV houses or the vent configuration in the NV houses. Canopy temperatures were also higher in the FV ventilated houses when three vents were used in the NV houses. A second major conclusion was that the US team found that low pressure fogging (4 atm) in NV houses does not completely offset the advantage of evaporative pad cooling in FV houses. High pressure fog (65 atm) is more effective, but considerably more expensive. Israel Experiments were done with roses in the years 2003-2005 and with tomatoes in 2005. Three modes of natural ventilation (roof, side and side + roof openings) were compared with a fan-ventilated (with evaporative cooling) house. It was shown that under common practice of fan ventilation, during summer, the ventilation rate is usually lower with NV than with FV. The microclimate under both NV and FV was not homogeneous. In both treatments there were strong gradients in temperature and humidity in the vertical direction. In addition, there were gradients that developed in horizontal planes in a direction parallel to the direction of the prevailing air velocity within the greenhouse. The gradients in the horizontal direction appear to be larger with FV than with NV. The ratio between sensible and latent heat fluxes (Bowen ratio) was found to be dependent considerably on whether NV or FV is applied. This ratio was generally negative in the naturally ventilated house (about -0.14) and positive in the fan ventilated one (about 0.19). Theoretical models based on Penman-Monteith equation were used to predict the interior air and crop temperatures and the transpiration rate with NV. Good agreement between the model and experimental results was obtained with regard to the air temperature and transpiration with side and side + roof ventilation. However, the agreement was poor with only roof ventilation. The yield (number of rose stems longer than 40 cm) was higher with FV
