Abstract:
A cancer diagnosis for young women can lead to experiences that earlier never occurred in life, an uncertain future with a lot of thoughts and reflections. Nurses lack of knowledge in cancer patients' experiences are known according to previous research, and this leads to that patients don’t recive adequate care. Purpose of this study was to describe young women's experiences of living with cancer. Three biographies consisting of five stories were analyzed from a qualitative manifest content analysis. Martinsen´s theory was used as theoretical framework, where she illuminates the importance of communion between people and the safety of the environment. Analysis resulted in four categories: the experience of getting a cancer diagnosis, the will to live, the experience of safety in the community and environment, and the knowledge that life will come to an end. Prominent experiences were hopefulness, desire to be healthy and vitality. Safety was something significant and could be experienced in context of community and special environments. The result also expressed experiences in form of despair, hopelessness and sadness. It is important for nurses to gain deeper knowledge about young women's experiences of living with cancer. This is to deliberately create an individualized care for cancer patients.

Abstract:
Life changes in multiple ways when a person becomes terminally ill. The knowledge of having to face a premature death leads to a wide diversity of feelings, and highlights the experience of dignity. When nursing staff’s knowledge regarding experiences of dignity and violated dignity is insufficient, there’s a risk of inadequate care where the patient’s dignity is not being fully considered. The aim of this Bachelor thesis was to describe women’s experiences of dignity while living with incurable disease with deadly prognosis. Five autobiographies were analyzed using a qualitative manifest content analysis. Two categories developed from the analysis: “Relative dignity” and “Absolute dignity”. The relative dignity showed through violated and preserved dignity, and the contact with others had a big influence of the experience. The absolute dignity was experienced as an inner, inviolable space. Inner strengths gave the women power to fight. It is important that nurses posses knowledge about how dignity can be experienced while living with incurable disease with deadly prognosis. By integrate this knowledge into the caring, the nurse can satisfy more needs, which can improve the patient’s experience of dignity.

Abstract:

Twice as many women as men suffer from mental ill-health. The negative trend of mental problems among teenagers continues. In certain places in Sweden, 40 per cent of the teenage girls have outspoken symptoms of depression. This is why it is important to observe mental ill-health in a public health perspective.

One effect evaluation of the DISA method (Depression In Swedish Adolescents) drew the conclusion that this universal depression preventive method is well working. The DISA method includes cognitive behavioural techniques that change negative pattern of thinking, give practice of communication, strategies of problem solution plus exercises to strengthen the social network. The purpose, in current investigation, was to let the group leaders’ estimations of the carrying through and of future prospects of the method be the basis of the method development as the method can be more effective. Six persons, who recently had became group leaders of DISA in Västmanland, were selected as interviewees by structured selection. Qualitative interviews were completed. A manifest qualitative content analysis carried through on the transcriptions.

Generally speaking, the interest of the method is great and there are bright prospects, according to the result of investigation. The basic education of DISA could however be experienced as heavy and intensive with a negative focus. The structured method material has an advanced language and a stereotyped gender perspective that influence the group meetings, which takes a lot of work and time. The supervision facilitates for the group leaders, as they through supervision will learn from each other’s experiences. A conclusion is that good anchorage of the method facilitates for the group leaders during implementation where the group meetings are carried through.

Abstract:
Background: Individuals with rheumatoid arthritis suffers from a chronic inflammatory disease. It is important that they incorporate physical activity throughout their life to minimize symptoms. The COVID-19 pandemic may have changed how they maintain physical activity, as well as how physiotherapist plan exercise. Aim: The aim of the study was to investigate how individuals with RA and physiotherapists at a rheumatologic clinic experience that COVID-19 has impacted patients’ rehabilitation exercise. Method: In a qualitative interview study two physiotherapists and four individuals with RA at a rheumatologic clinic was interviewed. Interviews were carried out by phone or videolink using a semistructured interviewguide. Data analysis was a manifest qualitative analysis. Result: Seven categories describe factors that impacted individuals with RA’s rehabilitation exercise: the importance of training equipment, compliance with training, reaction to changing conditions for training, alternative solutions enabling training, the importance of locations for exercise and its availability, the impact of weather in relations to exercise, experiences of restrictions for individuals at risk. Conclusion: Participants were positively inclined towards exercise during the COVID-19 pandemic. The importance of environmental factors and the equipment availability was recurring. The results indicate that concern regarding the consequences of reduced exercise was greater than contracting COVID-19.

Gaga, Filip Daniel. ""This money begged here is paid with blood" : A qualitative study of the Romanian beggars' perceptions on their health status before and during begging, and their health maintaining strategies in Uppsala, Sweden."

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction The beggars are one the most vulnerable and stigmatized groups in the European society and are determined to live in substandard conditions, characterized by lack of sanitation and overcrowdings, and bare the harsh weather conditions to earn their living. Often, they have limited access to healthcare and their lifestyle has a great impact upon their health. However, little is known about their own perceptions of their health and their strategies to keep it. Aim The aim was to explore the Romanian beggars’ perceptions of their health prior to and during begging, the perceived consequences of begging on their health, and their coping strategies to maintain health while begging in Uppsala, Sweden. Method Data was collected from 8 semi-structured interviews in Uppsala, Sweden during March 2015. The collected data was then analysed using manifest qualitative content analysis. Findings The Romanian beggars in Uppsala perceived their health status to be affected through their activity. Physical consequences involved developing new illnesses and conditions, but also aggravating previous health conditions, and mental consequences included degrading and marginalizing effects of begging, but also harassment from passersby. Access to healthcare in Sweden was limited and determined the beggars to develop alternative strategies for health management or to return to Romania for treatment.     Conclusion The health status was found to be both negatively and positively affected through complex interactions between the individual and the surrounding levels: social network, community, institutions and society. More attention should be given to this group from all levels to improve their health status.

Engle, Jeffrey Jamison. "Marketing the Iraq War: Manifest Content Analysis of US Executive Framing." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/22032.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the manifest content of the U.S. Executive framing effort intended to persuade the U.S. Congress, United Nations Security Council, and the American people that there was no greater threat to US national security than the continuing reign of Saddam Hussein\'s regime in Iraq. Through analysis of individual and group contributions to the three dominant themes created by the executive leadership, namely, the link between the regime of Saddam Hussein and terrorism, the pursuit of weapons of mass destruction, and the status of the regime and Saddam Hussein as an outlaw, I illuminate the process used to gain support for the unprecedented policy of preemptive war. The results of my analysis differ with previous literature on the subject which primarily considers the Bush administration\'s effort to be a campaign of lies, intended to lead the American people and the international community to believe a threat existed that the Bush Administration knew was not credible. In contrast to that conclusion, my analysis of the framing effort indicates that the marketing campaign for the Iraq War capitalized on world events, timing, the credibility of the particular speaker and their office and the amplifying effect of the media, making a campaign of lies unnecessary and the process they used replicable. Therefore, this analysis may justify heightened scrutiny for comparable policies in the future, even when the statements and argumentation an administration makes are primarily accurate and verifiable.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to explore how concepts of credibility relate to each other in the context of SMIs. SMIs are individuals who use their social media channels to create their own content and communicate with their followers, partly for marketing purposes. Credibility is important for SMIs as it can mean that they have larger influence over their followers and therefore are more successful with their content and communications. Previous research regarding credibility and SMIs have looked at the different concepts of credibility separately, and it is unclear how these concepts relate to each other in the context of SMIs. Therefore, multiple case studies was conducted through content analysis, to study the blogs of SMIs. The content analysis generated in a modification of credibility theory which shows that the concepts of credibility are Personal Conversations and Competence. These concepts indicate that SMIs’ credibility come from them sharing their personal lives with their followers, as well as showing some skills and knowledge. A modified theory is proposed and it is suggested that future research tests this theory.

Abstract:
This paper aims at exploring and discussing the possibilities of applying qualitative content analysis as a (text) interpretation method in case study research. First, case study research as a research strategy within qualitative social research is briefly presented. Then, a basic introduction to (qualitative) content analysis as an interpretation method for qualitative interviews and other data material is given. Finally the use of qualitative content analysis for developing case studies is examined and evaluated. The author argues in favor of both case study research as a research strategy and qualitative content analysis as a method of examination of data material and seeks to encourage the integration of qualitative content analysis into the data analysis in case study research.

Abstract:
Aims/Objectives: The objectives of this thesis were to examine and discuss the existing information and communication technology (ICT) tools used in the healthcare sector for older adults with dementia, the benefits and challenges of using these ICT tools from the perspective of older adults with dementia and their health care providers. Research methods: Data was collected using semi-structured interviews with older adults with dementia and health care providers and managers at a nursing home in Nigeria. All interviews were audio recorded with the consent of the research participants and then transcribed verbatim. All interview transcripts were analyzed using qualitative content analysis using the deductive approach. The coding scheme used for data analysis was derived from an existing framework called the Human-Organization-Technology fit (HOT) Framework. In addition, existing literature were reviewed on the use of ICT tools by older adults with dementia, their caregivers and their health care providers. Empirical findings: A total of six participants were interviewed for this study: two older adults with dementia, two nurses and two managers (one senior manager and one manager from the medical team). One older adult was 72 years old and was diagnosed with dementia one year ago. The other older adult was 70 years old and was diagnosed with dementia two years ago. The nurses that I interviewed have been working at this nursing home for 3 and 4 years respectively. The mangers that I interviewed have also been working at this nursing home for 3 and 4 years respectively. Two ICT tools are currently being used at this nursing home: 1) a GPS tracker and 2) a device that assists older adults with their daily activities. Eight themes emerged from the interviews: system quality, service quality, user satisfaction (perceived usefulness), system use, user expectation, organization structure, organization environment and net benefits. Conclusion and Future research: This study demonstrated that older adults with dementia and their caregivers (i.e. nurses) perceived the GPS tracker and the ADL assistant as userfriendly and helpful for supporting the daily activities. Most of the existing research on ICT tools used for dementia care have been conducted in North America and Europe. Therefore, there is a need for more research in Africa.

Abstract:
The journalistic field is facing a paradigm shift with the digitalization of offline publications. This research aims to study the Swedish magazine Omvärlden, who since January 2015 has completely converted to an online magazine. The research aims to understand how this digitalization process has affected the content of Omvärlden and if it still upholds classic journalistic quality. Thus the research question is ”how has the digitalization of the magazine Omvärlden affected the journalistic content published on their digital platforms? ”. A qualitative content analysis was performed and the data was anchored in the concept of news form. The analysis was conducted in three steps; 1) comparing the offline magazine with the online magazine, 2) comparing collected data from one single day, June 5th 2017, from all of Omvärlden’s digital platforms; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Omvarlden.se and Omvarldenberattar.se and finally 3) following an article and comparing how the story is shaped in each digital platform. The results pointed in several directions indicating that the content is indeed adapted to the various digital channels but to different extent. Classic journalistic logics intertwine with digital logics as the content is shaped and re-shaped depending on the platform of publication. The content is both fragmented and adjusted to social and digital media logics. On the other hand, it is also coherent and in accordance with classic journalistic content and news form . Due to the ever changing media environment the research shows journalistic content will have to adapt to several media logics when shaping the content.

Anderson, Stephanie. "A LEADERSHIP PERSPECTIVE ON FAMILY ENGAGEMENT: QUALITATIVE CONTENT ANALYSIS OF SECONDARY DATA." UKnowledge, 2019. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/edsc_etds/47.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to explore the leadership actions and activities that contributed to the implementation of a schoolwide family engagement initiative in a school. A qualitative content analysis of secondary data design was used to investigate the intentional actions and activities of a school leadership team during the implementation of a family engagement initiative within an elementary school. The Coherence Framework (Fullan & Quinn, 2016) provided a lens for which to investigate schoolwide change across drivers and sub-drivers. The findings of this study describe intentional leadership actions and activities when communicating with families, conducting formal assessments, and facilitating professional development. Patterns from the analysis indicate school leaders engage in intentional leadership actions and activities across all drivers and sub-drivers within the Coherence Framework (Fullan & Quinn, 2016). Family engagement practices are driven by core beliefs and consideration of the establishment of collective efficacy within the Coherence Framework may better support implementation of school change within family engagement implementation.

Full text
Abstract:
The current thesis examines how sex offenders are portrayed in newspapers in Germany with the use of a qualitative content analysis. Utilized were 49 articles both from a German tabloid called “Bild-Zeitung” and a broadsheet called “die Zeit”. Three main themes were identified and analyzed. Initially, the focus was on the portrayal of the sex offenders, followed by the portrayal of the victims and lastly which agencies and how they were mentioned. For each main theme several subthemes were formulated in order to examine the main themes in more depth. Findings suggest that most articles emphasized the previous criminal history of the offenders and stressed negative personality traits, leaving a stereotypical image. Findings of the second theme indicate that victims are rarely blamed for the offenses, while empathy establishment was emphasized through the use of the detailed description of the brutality of the offenses, especially for cases with underaged victims. The analysis of the last theme showed that police and investigators were portrayed mostly as doing a good job and working effectively in investigations, whereas experts like social workers, psychologists or lawyers were interviewed in less articles. The opinion of politicians and the public opinion mostly emphasized the demands for harsher punishment and longer incarceration. Therefore, the majority of articles examined showed a stereotypical image of the offenders, portraying them as recurrently reoffending, opportunistic and brutal.

Abstract:
Breast cancer has touched the lives of countless people, yet many women have misconceptions about the disease. One of the most common sources for breast cancer information used by American women is popular magazines. The current study sought to describe the content of magazine articles on breast cancer from 1993 and 2003 in an attempt to determine whether article content differed, and if so, in what ways and for what reasons. Topical theme, identification of risk factors, preventive measures, and sources mentioned were categories developed to determine possible differences in content between the two years. Twice as many articles on breast cancer appeared in 1993 as in 2003. In 1993, living with breast cancer was a theme of many articles, while in 2003, hormone replacement therapy was a dominant theme. Family history was emphasized as a risk factor in articles from 1993, while long-term hormone-replacement therapy was emphasized in 2003. In general, articles in 2003 focused on overall health practices in the possible prevention of breast cancer. Social, political, and scientific occurrences relating to breast cancer that took place from the early 1990s through 2003 were considered when analyzing content. Most of the differences in content appeared to reflect such occurrences.

Abstract:
The World Bank is a large organization that has been an influential actor in world politics for decades. The foundation of the work in the World Bank was stipulated in the Articles of Agreement, negotiated in 1944, which concluded that the purpose of the Bank was to finance postwar reconstruction and investment in developing countries. The purpose of this study is to examine how the problem of corruption is framed in the anti-corruption strategies produced by the World Bank, since corruption has received a growing interest from the World Bank, as well as the world in general during the last decade. This essay will analyze how the World Bank create and use their knowledge regarding corruption. This will be performed by studying how the anti-corruption strategies of the World Bank have evolved from the 1997 Publication “Helping Countries Combat Corruption: A World Bank Strategy” the revised governance strategy publication “Reforming Public Institutions and Strengthening Governance: A World Bank Strategy” from 2000, followed by the latest strategy paper “Strengthening World Bank Group Engagement on Governance and Anti-Corruption” published in the year of 2006. The hypothesis and theory that the analysis is built upon is of a social-constructive nature, and the policy documents will be analyzed through the theory and method of claims-making, which highlights how power asymmetries and collective identity claims is used to give certain claims validity. The study will also look for the possible existence of a political bias, which often willingly or unwillingly shapes the views of individuals as well as organization. The results showed that there has only been a small change in working methods within the anti-corruption unit at the World Bank during the last ten years, despite significant scholarly criticism against the suggested strategies and despite poor results. The aspects the strategies had been changed in did however indicate a possibility that it has followed a politicized general western/northern trend of liberalization which has become the norm for how economic reforms should be stipulated.

Ledbetter, Lissa S. "A Qualitative Content Analysis of Early Algebra Education iOS Apps for Primary Children." Scholar Commons, 2017. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6884.

Full text
Abstract:
Educational software applications (apps) on multi-touch, mobile devices provide a promising space to help learners work toward long-term educational goals, like learning with understanding (Bransford, Brown, & Cocking, 2000). Such goals are particularly relevant in supporting a learner’s efforts to become more mathematically literate. Yet, a number of current apps do not appear to be living up to this potential. As such, this study drew upon the theoretical framework of Learning Science and the conceptual framework of TPACK theory (Mishra & Koehler, 2006) to define curricular characteristics that ideally support primary children’s potential to learn early algebra concepts with understanding, through multi-touch, mobile, iOS mathematics education apps. Using qualitative content analysis these characteristics, then, were compared to the curricular characteristics of three authentic (i.e., real-world) apps in order to describe the general extent to which the two sets of characteristics aligned. This study found the authentic apps did not align with the majority of curricular characteristics that ideally support learning with understanding. Additionally, a number of qualitative findings emerged from the study that may be used to inform future app design. These ideas include themes related to the kinds of characteristics the authentic apps tended to align with or not, and suggested adaptations to a number of contemporary theories and models related to pedagogical content knowledge and its application toward the goal of learning with understanding. These findings have direct implications for the theory and practice of app design, and suggest revisions to the way in which the field of instructional design, historically, has been approached.

Resultat: Resultatet resulterade i sex kategorier.

Abstract:
Regardless of culture or nation, students today are experiencing bullying via technology. With the rise of technology, this abuse has the ability to become more far-reaching, and more pervasive than ever. These students face oppression, and in some cases severe imbalances of power. Current research is being conducted and laws created based on varying operational and conception definitions of the term "cyberbullying." This study aims to analyze and provide a coherent definition for the term "cyberbullying" as it is used in research and legislation, especially in the context of today's educational environments. The results help shed light on the large variances in the term and suggestions are made to clarify the definition as the field continues to move forward.

Abstract:

Internet-based technologies have been the downfall of incumbents across numerous industries. This has not been the case in higher education, though unaccredited organizations that offer free- and low-cost online courses have the potential to disrupt low- and mid-tier colleges and universities that lack strong branding or regional advantages. This qualitative content analysis examined 410 articles from the academic trade press to describe the qualities of three companies that offer free and inexpensive online courses, StraighterLine, Udacity, and Coursera, to better understand their potential to disrupt for-profit colleges and universities. The four descriptive themes that emerged were: (a) credentialing issues, (b) the unbundling of higher education, (c) the development of online learning, and (d) single-course providers. Although distinct, the themes are interrelated and the growth of single-course providers, the unbundling of higher education, and the continued development of online learning will be affected by how credentialing issues are addressed by the regional accreditors. Employers are increasingly accepting micro-credentials from unaccredited, single-course providers that have significantly lower costs and a focused mission. The slow process of accrediting alternative providers, which some have argued is to protect incumbents, may actually speed up disruption.

Abstract:
Elliot Rodger, a 22-year-old student, carried out the Day of Retribution in Isla Vista, California, leaving six dead and fourteen wounded, before taking his own life. There here have been numerous attempts to explain his behavior including claims of him having features of autism spectrum disorder, traits of psychopathy and psychotic symptoms, narcissism, depression, fragile masculinity, and deviant sexual fantasies. This study examines the link between strain, coping and violence, based on General Strain Theory, using a qualitative content analysis of Elliot’s manifesto, My Twisted World: The Story of Elliot Rodger. The results indicate that Elliot experienced multiple sources of strain in his life and that he lacked adequate coping skills, which affected his perceptions of and interactions with the world. He experienced isolation, frustration and anger. These negative emotions together with his sense of entitlement intensified over the years, creating desire for revenge and justifying use of extreme violence as an attempt to eliminate strain and find relief.

Sabo, Jeffrey. "Qualitative Content Analysis Examining the Biomechanical Implications of Curling and Keybedding in the Taubman Approach." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/41612.

Full text
Abstract:
Many pianists are impacted by playing-related pain and injury, but a great deal is still unknown about the development and prevention of these problems. Several approaches to piano technique have been developed to provide technical recommendations based on scientific ideas. The anecdotal success of some approaches suggests that understanding the biomechanical concepts underlying them may be beneficial. However, these approaches are rarely discussed in the literature, in part due to linguistic inconsistencies among pedagogical and scientific disciplines. This has created obstacles to scientific evaluation of the claims made by pedagogues, and it has limited the degree to which knowledge transfer can occur among different fields. One approach that has been anecdotally successful in alleviating and preventing playing-related problems is the Taubman Approach, which aims in part to identify certain “sources of tension” that may increase the likelihood of developing physical problems. This study used Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) to examine sources on the Taubman Approach in order to identify claims about biomechanics underlying two different “Sources of tension:” “Curling” and “Keybedding.” The results from each QCA were then used to propose a biomechanical explanation of these concepts in language that is consistent with current scientific literature. The results of the analysis on “Curling” suggest that actively flexing the DIP/PIP joints requires activating multiarticular muscles, which can lead to increased muscle contraction, forces, and stiffness across multiple degrees of freedom when playing. Motions and positions proposed by the Taubman Approach as alternatives to “Curling” were also examined. The results of the analysis on “Keybedding” indicated that using excess fingertip force once the key is depressed may be problematic. Relevant aspects of the piano mechanism were identified, as well as recommendations for the proper setup at the keyboard that may impact muscle contraction, forces, and stiffness once playing begins. Subjective terms were analyzed to differentiate biomechanical aspects of the recommended way to keep the key depressed from other ways that may be problematic. The hand and forearm were said to have an important role in generating the necessary fingertip force to keep the key depressed without using excessive muscle contraction across the finger joints. Both analyses also identified technical and physical problems that may be relevant to each concept. The findings in this study yielded insights into important issues related to the terminology used to describe piano technique in different contexts. These insights included the need for clear differentiation between subjective and objective language, as well as the need for understanding pedagogical language in context before knowledge transfer can occur.

Oberngruber, B. (Bernhard). "The migration-security nexus in domains of insecurity:a qualitative content analysis of two recent EU-policies." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2016. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201601201063.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, issues in migration gradually gained importance and are now firmly on top of European policy makers’ agenda. Against the backdrop of an increasing public and political awareness of the matters related to migration, new problem-solving approaches emerged. The proposal of securitizing issues in migration is among the most prominent approaches. This would allow to break free from procedures and rules by placing the matter beyond the rule of the established political game. The impacts for migrants of the securitization of migration would however be substantial, as securitization also places the issue in a much more hostile environment. This thesis is thus concerned with the analysis of two recent EU-policies in terms of identifying possible political speech acts, which are a basic requirement of securitization. In most cases, speech acts are highly expedient towards labelling the issue as a threat to security. Theoretically grounded in the work of Jef Huysmans’ The politics of insecurity, this thesis is guided by two research questions: 1. What are the threat definitions of migration in European post-9/11 policies and how do they correspond with the politics of insecurity? 2. Which kind of political reframing is taking place in the shift from migration as a non-politicized issue to the securitization of migration? This thesis uses Qualitative Content Analysis as a research method. It is concerned with identifying themes and patterns in two recent EU-policies and sets them in relation to three main categories, which emerged from the theory of this research. These categories are the following: 1. Migration as a threat to internal security and domestic labour markets 2. Migration as a threat to European cultural values 3. Migration as a threat to European welfare The data can be identified as belonging to two different policy areas, the security area and the migration area. The first policy, the European Security Strategy, is taken from the security area and was published as a reaction to the violent attacks of 9/11 in the United States. The document deals with threats all along the spectrum as related to European security. The second document, the Global Approach for Migration and Mobility, is the overarching framework of the European Union external migration and asylum policy since 2005. The document defines the premises under which the EU is conducting policy dialogues and development cooperation with non-EU countries. The findings of this research revealed that migration poses almost exclusively a threat to the first category, European internal security and domestic labour markets. Further, empirical evidence revealed correlations between migration, organized crime and terrorism. However, no convincing evidence has been found that cultural values or European welfare is threatened by migration. The last chapter discusses the findings and analyses them against the backdrop of the administration of fear and trust, which has a distorting effect on the relationship between refugees and frightened societies in Europe. This is because, in domains of insecurity, previously trusted or indifferent relationships between established and outsiders are relocated in a climate of fear and prejudice. This chapter also reveals potential solutions to disrupt the widespread intermingling between migration and the feeling of insecurity.

DeHaan, Tracy. "Dying to Succeed: A Qualitative Content Analysis of Online News Reports About Affluent Teen Suicide Clusters." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/20528.

Full text
Abstract:
The media is a social factor influencing suicide clusters. As a result, the AFSP and the CDC established guidelines for journalists in order to prevent suicide contagion and imitation. Compliance has been inconsistent. However, researchers have failed to explore the qualitative nature of how media reports are framed. Furthermore, research has not examined how online news reports may include features unique to the digital environment. One must also consider how other social factors affect the development of suicide clusters. Family, affluence, peers, and education may influence suicide clustering, especially amongst teens and young adults. Psychological factors, like imitation and contagion, should also be considered. This research examined online media reports and appended comments pertaining to three point suicide clusters involving teens and young adults (Cornell University 2009-2010 and Palo Alto, CA 2009-2010/2014-2015). Eighty-two online news articles and 2,500 comments were analyzed. The researcher conducted discourse analysis and a comparative case study using domains and themes derived from the data. Articles were checked for compliance to the preventative guidelines, and the qualitative nature of violations was explored. Descriptive statistics and timing of publication were used to describe the relationship between media framing and the development of suicide clusters. Comments were examined for both reflexive and oppositional responses to media frames. Data was also open coded for the consideration of other domains and themes. Findings suggested that while the media often failed to adhere to prevention guidelines, the online news reports do not seem to be a large factor in the growth of the point clusters under investigation. Instead, findings suggested that these online reports offer protective features including hyperlinks to prevention resources and scientific facts, as well as public comment spaces for coping and the creation of a collective will. Findings also suggested that other social factors including the affluent family, peer groups, and education might be equally influential. These factors alter levels of social integration and normative regulation, sometimes in an interactional manner. The researcher argued that social factors might lead community members to experience egoistic, fatalistic, and/or anomic suicidal tendencies. Furthermore, both imitation and contagion may be at play.

Wu, Yanzhu. "An Example of Utilizing Students' Reflections in e-Portfolios for Program Evaluation: A Qualitative Content Analysis." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/73336.

Full text
Abstract:
As the growth of online programs in higher education accelerated across the nation, concerns have been addressed regarding the quality of online programs. The evaluation of programs for quality assurance has become an important component of successful online programs (Kindgren, Nilsson, and Wiklund, 2012, Martinez, Liu, Watson, and Bichelmeyer, 2006). Deggs and Weaver (2009) stated that student perception is "essential to improving the quality of instruction in higher education" (p. 41). In the online program evaluation literature, majority of evaluation studies commonly collected students' perceptions of their learning outcomes and their learning experiences through survey questionnaires. Few studies had been conducted on using students' reflections in e-portfolios for program evaluation in higher education. The purpose of this study was to explore how students' reflections in their e-portfolio can be used as a mechanism for program evaluation. This study employed a qualitative content analysis method. Seventy students' reflections in their e-portfolios of an online master's program were collected. Three types of reflections in e-portfolios have been reviewed and analyzed: (1) students' reflections on their previous approaches to the five tasks of instructional design including design, development, utilization, management, and evaluation; (2) the students' reflections on their current approaches to these five instructional design tasks; and (3) the perceptions on their learning experiences in this online master's program. Two overarching themes emerged from the students' reflections including students' perceptions on their learning outcomes and their learning experiences in the program. The results of the study indicated that students' reflections in their e-portfolios provide another dimension of qualitative information for program evaluation with respect to students' perceptions, and this qualitative data can be used in conjunction with other methods of data collection to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of online programs.

Abstract:
This research examines Subscription Video On-Demand (SVOD) using Netflix as one of the main examples that has seen a dramatic increase in usage in recent years compared to the traditional way of viewing content through television. Using focus group sessions and an online survey, a qualitative analysis approach is used by way of a thematic analysis to elaborate and gain insight into the phenomenon of SVOD within our society which has allowed viewers to alter time shifting and self-scheduling habits. Watching online film and television over the internet, forces the breakdown of the traditional value chain of viewing methods as well as consumption of it. This research aims to narrow this research gap surrounding SVOD. The results will be used to add value to the research area of this growing and changing phenomenon of online TV consumption with SVOD.

Abstract:
Intimate partner violence is a global health problem. Male violence against women is one of the biggest threats against women's life and health. The responsibility to provide support and protection to victims or people at risk of violence is on the state and municipality. The collaboration between social services and the police authority is legal and an important component of a health promotion work in order to create a safe and secure environment for vulnerable women. The purpose with this study was to increase knowledge and understanding of the social services and police authority collaboration in woman’s issues. The focus was primarily on what influence it had on collaborations work. The study focused on semi-structured individual interviews through a combination of convenience and snowball sampling. According to Graneheim and Lundman (2004) manifest content analysis has been used with collaboration theory for analyzing empirical data. The result precipitated in two domains with related categories. The first domain was the Individual level. Among the professionals and managers who were involved in collaboration and women's issue and developed their skills, existence of collaboration between specific people internally and externally between authorities. Other domain was organizational and societal levels. Common definitions of collaboration and men’s violence against women were missing which meant that the authority people handled these issues differently. The employees of both authorities did not share information about e.g. which strategies for collaboration were. Clear leadership existed within both authorities but there were no common flow diagrams, clear allocation of roles and understanding of their responsibility within and between authorities. All these elements were important components that influence each other and collaborative outcomes in women's issues. The hope with this study is that it will highlight the complexity of interactions in women's issues and increase knowledge of the areas that affect collaborative performance.

Abstract:

Abstract:

College football has become an enormous aspect of American culture. The effects have permeated into the growing realm of social media, particularly Facebook. College football budgets and the salaries of the head coaches are higher than ever before, and they are only getting larger. Further research is necessary to study how public relations practitioners in college athletic departments can understand the link between social media and college football coaches. This study qualitatively analyzes the Facebook pages of the most dominant college football conference, the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The study analyzes if Facebook fans for each SEC football program view the head coaches as heroes, as well as gauge the scope and existence of Facebook fan comments that favorably or unfavorably reference the head coach. A qualitative content analysis of SEC football Facebook fan comments during the peak competition month of November answers these questions. This study shows that certain fans in the SEC, do indeed, view their head coach as a hero. The study also demonstrates the themes, particularly fan revolt against a losing head coach and the importance of rivalry games as it relates to positive and negative fan comments about the SEC head coaches. The effect of this study on the field of public relations is also discussed.

Abstract:
In this research, we have investigated the entrepreneur and how he or she can use self-leadership in order to exercise leadership. An entrepreneur is a global phenomenon and entrepreneurship is part of it, in both as being developed or underdeveloped. On how entrepreneurs engage with passion in the creation of a business venture is something that is somehow similar for each individual despite the different nationalities. However, how he or she develops the needed tools and develops leadership skills to conduct his or her business venture. To study this, we have conducted a qualitative content analysis with interviewees who are entrepreneurs either from Brazil or India to investigate on how being an entrepreneur can benefit through self-leadership. We therefore derived from the existing construction of self-leadership and its dimensions in order to use the abductive approach in the qualitative content analysis. We have therefore collected data through semi-structured interviews. Then we analyzed the content of the answers and linked the emerging data to the existing literature review on the entrepreneur and self-leadership. Furthermore, we analyzed how an entrepreneur can benefit him or herself from self-leadership as an individual and how he or she can use it in order to develop leadership skills. Our findings link the literature of the entrepreneur as an individual and his or her use of self-leadership in order to achieve and succeed.

The interest in hoarding has peaked since its first clinical definition in 1996 and is evident by six television shows centered on the topic. This thesis reports the results a content analysis of two seasons (21 episodes) of the popular T.V. series A&E’s Hoarders. People rationalize hoarding in ways that both differ and overlap. Doctors, professional organizers, hoarders and their loved ones collectively frame hoarding as a medical and mental health problem. The results suggest that Americans’ perceptions of hoarding behavior has shifted from one that is deviant behavior to one that is medicalized.

Abstract:
This dissertation explores what it means to “Act Upon” measure-based feedback in the group therapy context. Eleven group leaders at three college counseling centers were provided feedback completed by their group members using the Group Questionnaire (GQ) and the Outcome Questionnaire (OQ-45). Researchers selected two a priori ways in which the feedback could be “acted upon”: via GQ Use and GQ Value. Leaders reported their use and value of the feedback using two data sources—weekly leader slips and end-of-term debrief interview transcripts. Both sources of data were content analyzed across several phases of coding. The resultant categories are intended to provide a preliminary understanding of how leaders treat the feedback received. Dimensions were then added to consolidate the meaning of the categories into a temporal pattern. Finally, using the resultant data, a scheme for quantifying the “acted upon” construct is proposed in effort to develop a potential moderator or mediator variable for future quantitative analyses. Implications of the dissertation are then discussed.

Abstract:
Cybersecurity is an increasingly important topic to all actors from the private individuals to international institutions. The borderless nature of the internet has however made it more difficult for nation states to take care of their own security and institutions like the EU are also coping with the difficulties of defending themselves from attacks that can affect practically any part of the system and cause wide-spread damage. The EU has tried to address these issues by publishing strategies to improve the cybersecurity of the Union and its Member States. This thesis studies the discourse that is used by the Union in its strategies from 2013 and 2020. This is done to determine how the EU portrays each level, the national, institutional, or private and how responsible they are for the cybersecurity in the Union and to see how this discourse has changed in the previous few years. The theoretical framework of the thesis consists of neofunctionalism and historical institutionalism which are used to explain the direction of the development of the EU’s discourse. The study is conducted using critical discourse analysis and qualitative content analysis. The findings of the analysis suggest that there is noticeable shift to the EU taking more responsibility and actions to ensure its cybersecurity. Similarly it seems remarkable how the importance of the private sector seems to have diminished in the newer discourse.

Abstract:
It has been well established that breastfeeding provides the best type of nutrition, strengthens the bond between a baby and his mother, and has both physiological and psychological benefits. However, when breastfeeding is causing difficulties, it can negatively impact the mothers’ well-being and even result in depression. When a baby or its mother is hospitalized, breastfeeding issues can arise. The support and help mothers receive during hospitalization is often seen as insufficient or even incorrect. This can cause breastfeeding disruptions and discontinuation, which in turn can cause a prolonged hospital stay and suffering of care. The goal of this thesis is therefore to describe mothers perceived breastfeeding support by the nurses that cared for them. We have made a qualitative content analysis of 15 blogs about breastfeeding for this empiric qualitative study. The blogs were published between 2009-2018, 11 blogs were from England and four were from Sweden. The results were presented in three different themes: strengthening support, feeling reduced, and being dependent on the health professionals’ knowledge and competence.  The results show that breastfeeding support is perceived as strengthening and meaningful when adapted to the individual’s needs. However, mothers experience suffering related to care when they feel confused, powerless, and unseen. In the discussion we show how health care personals information and support influences the mothers breastfeeding experiences.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to examine different independent fashion audience reactions to the covers of UK Vogue April 2021, which featured four upcoming models of color: Mona Tougaard, Janaye Furman, Achenrin Madit, and Precious Lee. The study focuses on responses gathered from two fashion sources: The Instagram account Diet Prada, and a fashion forum called The Fashion Spot. In addition, the design has been extended by The Fashion Spot fashion crowd’s reactions to the Vogue Italia July 2008 also known as “The Black Issue”.  The thesis intends to associate the main research problem with the magazine industry and digital world of fashion, media producers and advertisers, the issue of power, and female models diversity on the covers of Vogue. The study employs a method of qualitative content analysis. Additionally, Stuart Hall’s encoding and decoding model has been implemented to define the message displayed on the fashion magazine covers and to examine the readers' reactions based on the collected data.  The findings show that even though the UK Vogue April 2021 covers met with positive reactions and approval from independent industry voices, some concerns have appeared. While British Vogue has been praised for its decision to feature four black models on the covers, it has been mentioned that other international editions of Vogue did not decide to follow this idea. Moreover, the lack of more diverse fashion producers, such as fashion photographers or stylists has been pointed out. A comparative analysis of the reaction data studied also showed that the audiences of the two independent fashion platforms tend to differ in terms of reactions to the covers. Furthermore, an additional comparison between the Vogue Italia July 2008 and UK Vogue April 2021 has highlighted the differences between the social and cultural changes as well as the perception of a fashion magazine as a media.

Messenger, Mackenzie Rae. "Millennials and the Changing Workplace: The Process of Organizational Learning." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/37041.

Full text
Abstract:
Members of the workplace are at the heart of the organizational learning process. They play a major role by communicating their shared perceptions, distributing knowledge, and acting as human components of the broader organizational memory. Today, three generations cohabitate in the work environment, each of whom have their own distinct traits that influence how they perceive and enact learning. This thesis explores how Millennials experience organizational learning and its significance. By applying Crossan et al.’s (1999) 4I Framework, the process of intuiting, interpreting, integrating, and institutionalizing are considered from the standpoint of the Millennial generation. The methodology for this study includes semi-structured interviews and qualitative thematic analysis to better understand this relationship. This is based on 13 conversations with members all drawn from a single organization. The findings describe how Millennials see learning as fundamental as well as how they overcome the challenges they face and apply their knowledge.

Jansson, Johan. "The Water Wars : A Summer Game or Serious Business? A Qualitative Content Analysis of the Narratives Behind the Debate." Thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för samhällsstudier (SS), 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-76975.

Abstract:
In the decade of the 1990’s, people started to foresee a dark future wherein wars over the precious resource water would be a reality. This was to be called the water wars thesis and implied that countries would go to war to safeguard their own access to water. This sparked a debate over the legitimacy of the thesis. Although, even in 2018 the debate lives on and the water wars thesis still prevails as a quite influential thesis in media and on policymakers table. Therefore, an intriguing question arises as to why and how the thesis survives even when met with empirical data pointing to the other direction, cooperation. This research paper is examining this intriguing question by adopting a qualitative content analysis approach together with an analytical framework called narrative policy analysis. This framework seeks to explain complex policy issues such as the water wars thesis by examining the policy narratives behind them. Therefore, this will be used to examine documents and publication with the aim to observe policy narratives within the debate that may assist in explaining the prevalence of the water wars thesis. Thus, this research paper indicates that the prevalence of the water wars thesis may have roots in how the different positions portray the issue of water wars. Hence, this study has also indicated a divergence in what system beliefs the positions take.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to examine how participants experience the content and design, in a parent group. The study was conducted with a qualitative approach, in which eight parents were interviewed. Data material has been processed and analyzed with a qualitative manifest content analysis, and the study's theoretical framework consider primarily the perspective of systems, Putnam's and Bourdieu's theory of social capital and Erikson's psychosocial development theory. Significant results were that the parent group was perceived as important, especially to establish new social contacts, experience and safeness reliance from another first-time parent. It was also important to have a leader with social competence, where sensitivity and flexibility were significant quality. It also emerged that the information that was provided was not the most significant, instead the interaction between the parents was the main reason for participation. The results also show that becoming a parent was a draining process both to themselves and their relationship

Staflin, Emma, and Jennie Lundkvist. "Nurses’ counseling to mothers to prevent mother to child transmission of HIV through breastfeeding : A qualitative study." Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Omvårdnad, 2011. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-76743.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: HIV is a serious problem in Namibia, 13.1% of the adult population is HIV-positive or is a carrier of AIDS. This is one of the highest numbers in the world. HIV is passed from mother to child during pregnancy, during labour or through breast milk. 18.8 % of the pregnant mothers in Namibia who is in contact with the maternity welfare have HIV. Aim: The aim of the study was to describe nurses’ counseling to mothers to prevent mother to child transmission of HIV through breastfeeding. Method: Eight nurses working with PMTCT of HIV were interviewed in Namibia. The interviews were transcribed and a content analysis was made. 18 sub-categories and seven categories were found. Findings: It is important that nurses provide individual counseling, are supportive and motivate the mothers. Poverty is an obstacle for the mothers, stigmatization occurs and cultural differences can have influence on the mothers. It is also important that nurses are updated in counseling and PMTCT. Conclusion: Nurses should provide mothers with the correct information in a pedagogical way. Nurses need to be aware of obstacles for the mothers and their families to be able to meet their different demands. Men are not involved in PMTCT-counseling and nurses think that partner involvement would benefit PMTCT of HIV.

Lindahl, Elisabeth. "Striving for purity : interviews with people with malodorous exuding ulcers and their nurses." Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Omvårdnad, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-1940.

Full text
Abstract:
The overall purpose of this thesis is two-fold; to illuminate the meaning of living with ‘impurity’ in terms of malodorous exuding ulcers, and the meaning of caring for people with ‘impure’ bodies in institutions and in people’s homes. The thesis comprises four papers based on studies using qualitative methods. To illuminate nursing care as narrated by 27 retired care providers in northern Sweden, seven audio recorded group dialogues were performed (I). The transcribed group dialogues were analysed using a hermeneutic approach. The findings formulated as cleanliness, order and clear conscience point to purity. By cleaning patients and their surroundings repeatedly, by preserving order in various ways and by keeping a clear conscience, nurses committed to preserving purity. This study opened up for questions concerning the meaning of ‘impurity’ and‘purity’ in nursing today leading to papers II-IV. Learning about ‘purity’ is possible through studying ‘impurity’. Audio recorded narrative interviews were performed to illuminate the meaning of living with malodorous exuding ulcers (II) and the meaning of caring for people with malodorous exuding ulcers (III). A phenomenological-hermeneutic method was used to analyse the nine transcribed interviews with patients (II) and 10 transcribed interviews with nurses (III). The comprehensive understanding of living with malodorous exuding ulcers (II) was formulated as being trapped in a debilitating process that slowly strikes one down. There is a longing for wholeness and purity. When finding consolation, i.e., encountering genuineness and feeling loved, regarded and respected as fully human despite ulcers, patients feel purified. The comprehensive understanding of caring for people with malodorous exuding ulcers (III) was formulated as being exposed to, and overwhelmed by suffering that is invading. One runs the risk of experiencing desolation when one cannot make the ulcers and malodour disappear and fails to protect patients from additional suffering. To illuminate nurses’ reflections on obstacles and possibilities providing care as desired by people with malodorous ulcers (IV), six nurses from a previous study (III) were interviewed. An illustration with findings from paper II was shown and participants were asked to reflect on obstacles and possibilities providing the care desired by patients. The 12 audio recorded transcribed interviews were analysed using qualitative content analyses. The interpretations were presented as one theme ‘striving to do ‘good’ and be good’. The sub-themes related to the obstacles were ‘experiencing clinical competence constraints’, ‘experiencing organisational constraints’, ‘experiencing ineffective communication’, ‘fearing failure’ and ‘experiencing powerlessness’. The sub themes related to possibilities were ‘spreading knowledge on ulcer treatments’, ‘considering wholeness’ and ‘creating clear channels of communication’. The meaning of living with ‘impurity’ in terms of malodorous exuding ulcers, and the meaning of caring for people with ‘impure’ bodies in institutions and in patients’ homes is interpreted as striving for purity. Patients experience impurity when feeling dirty, losing hope, and not being respected and regarded as fully human. Nurses experience impurity when failing to shield patients’ vulnerability and their own defencelessness, and when facing obstacles preventing them from providing good care and being good nurses. Both patients and nurses may experience purity through consolation. For nurses, mediating consolation presupposes being consoled by being recognised for their challenging work, being respected and included in multiprofessional teams supported by the health care organisation and the leaders. Then patients can become consoled, and feel restored and fully human again despite their contaminated body.

Rajkowska, Paulina. "Roles of female video game characters and their impact on gender representation." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Medier och kommunikation, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-225393.

Full text
Abstract:
Due to immense popularity of video games the author investigates the presence of gender portrayal within them. The purpose of this study is to thoroughly analyse a general phenomenon, such as gender, within video games to develop a better understanding of its particularities in this form of media and to expand the general body of knowledge on video games as a research topic. As prior literature shows, gender within video games can be either defined by its biased and sexualized character or by a tendency towards equality and strength for woman. To explain those varied results the author introduces the category of role as an important factor for character representation based on the use of theoretical frameworks of symbolic interactionism, more particularly dramaturgical approach of E. Goffman. She then further proceeds with a qualitative discourse analysis of both protagonist and support characters from 22 different games. The author finds that there is a visible difference within the manners females are presented depending on their role. Lead characters are more likely to be strong, independent and self-sufficient whereas support characters most often require immediate help, are dependent on others and are more likely to be abused. Presented results can account for some of the variety in prior research and they open the field of video game studies to possibly new research topics.

boyles, bryan. "HOW DOES ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS AFFECT DRINKING OUTCOMES? A GROUNDED THEORY PERSPECTIVE." VCU Scholars Compass, 2017. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/5047.

Full text
Abstract:
The mutual aid of Alcoholics Anonymous helps more people with alcohol-related problems than all forms of clinical treatment combined. Yet, efforts to understand AA’s action have been conducted, almost exclusively, from a clinical perspective. Thus far, the literature representing Alcoholics Anonymous from the perspective of its members is very limited. This study uses qualitative content analysis of the AA literature and a grounded theory approach to AA’s fellowship to provide an insider’s perspective of change processes associated with AA involvement. This understanding of the AA literature posits that Alcoholics Anonymous involvement results in life improvement, changes in spirituality, improved well-being, an acceptance of powerlessness over alcohol and a sense of fellowship. This understanding of AA’s fellowship posits that Alcoholics Anonymous involvement results in increased life meaning, reduced insecurity, loneliness, anxiety and shame.
