Abstract:
This research posed the question â How does racism in the gay community and homophobia in the Black community restrict gay Black maleâ s life chances and life opportunities?â Previous research has uncovered racist attitudes within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community as well as homophobic attitudes within the Black community. Because of conflicting social identifiers (Is it possible for one to be both homosexual and Black?) and the invisibility of a gay Black voice, it is imperative to deconstruct the relationship between gay Black men and the communities they are a part of. I utilized qualitative in-depth interviewing techniques interviewing 15 Black men aged 18 and older who identified themselves as homosexual. The questions revolved around three primary questions designed to center the researcherâ ¦How do gay Black men describe their lives, How do gay Black men describe what their lives ought to be, and What obstacles do gay Black men see effecting their opportunity to live the lives they feel they ought to be living. The gay Black male research participants disclosed that because of Black stereotypes, gay stereotypes, acceptance with stipulations in the gay community and the black community, racism in the gay community, homophobia in the Black community, and perceptions of blackness and masculinityâ s affect on gay Black menâ ¦gay Black men live their lives with various restrictions. In other words, gay Black men do not appear to be living their lives the way they feel they ought to be living it. This work is important because a majority of the participants stated they wished to live restriction free lives. They are not able to fully be themselves in their daily lives and often have to assimilate to be accepted.

Abstract:
Autism is often presented as a seriously disabling neurodevelopmental brain disease, and those who suffer from it are seen as individuals trapped in themselves, confused, and unable to communicate. Current research within the Clinical Model of Disability looks into the causes and seeks a possible cure for autism. However, some communities of Autists are articulating a discourse which challenges the assumption that autism is a disorder that needs to be treated or cured. Such discourse claims that autism is merely a natural variation of the configuration of the human mind, with its unique ways of socializing, communicating and sensing, all of which need to be recognized, respected and valued. Their main argument is that by excluding the neurodiverse from the discussion of what normalcy constitutes, they are being subjected to a certain epistemological violence, which deprives them of voice and agency to contest these discourses. As a reaction to this, and to the notorious absence of an Autist perspective in special needs education courses, this thesis explores how Autists themselves see and experience their autism. The goal of the thesis is to broaden the perspective from which we look at normalcy and neurodiversity. For the purpose of this thesis, 6 participants on the autism spectrum from Finland and the UK agreed to participate in private two-way exchanges to express their own views on autism. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews, email and other electronic exchanges. Using the principles of Qualitative Content Analysis, the data was processed into descriptive themes which showcase the different ways in which the participants see and experience their autism. Grounded on a subjectivist and poststructuralist epistemological stance, the theoretical framework of the thesis is defined within the Social Model of Disability, and the analysis and discussion of the data were carried out borrowing conceptual tools from Critical Disability Studies. The findings suggest that it is possible to experience autism in a variety of ways, including autism as an identity, as a normal human variation, as a disability because of others, as an impairment, or as a reason to feel proud. These findings suggest that the experience of autism is open to many variations, hinting at the complexity and intersectionality of the issue. The variability in the stories of the participants suggests also that the experience of autism does not happen in isolation, but in a constant and interdependent interplay of many other factors such as cultural background, current context, socioeconomic background, gender, age, employment status, support structures or a lack of them. Although there were some common elements in the experiences that the participants shared, it can be said that the most defining feature of the data, as a whole, is the significant differences found in the way autism was experienced and described by the participants. Autism can be experienced in a great variety of ways, depending on the specific circumstances of the individual, and the preconceptions and expectations that are present in a given sociocultural context. While Autists can be described in many different ways, in the end, being Autist is just an arbitrary label. Everyone has impairments. Everyone has cognitive capacities that enable them to do certain things, and not others. A diagnosis can offer a label for an individual, which may provide help and support for that individual. Labels tell us nothing about a person. The idea of treating autism should always be positive, if it facilitates in any way the reciprocal encounter between two people. Perhaps acknowledging the cultural aspects of the experience of disability, treatments addressing cultural preconceptions should be promoted. The best possible way to treat autism, in any circumstance, is to treat it with dignity and respect. Treating real people with dignity is always about seeing the person, and forgetting the labels. Genuinely understanding other human beings involves talking and listening to them, on their own terms, and finding out what makes them an individual, and not what makes them part of a group. This is something which speaks not about the specificities of Autists, but more about our own capacity and limitations for genuine empathy and meaningful communication.

Abstract:
The overall purpose of this thesis is two-fold; to illuminate the meaning of living with ‘impurity’ in terms of malodorous exuding ulcers, and the meaning of caring for people with ‘impure’ bodies in institutions and in people’s homes. The thesis comprises four papers based on studies using qualitative methods. To illuminate nursing care as narrated by 27 retired care providers in northern Sweden, seven audio recorded group dialogues were performed (I). The transcribed group dialogues were analysed using a hermeneutic approach. The findings formulated as cleanliness, order and clear conscience point to purity. By cleaning patients and their surroundings repeatedly, by preserving order in various ways and by keeping a clear conscience, nurses committed to preserving purity. This study opened up for questions concerning the meaning of ‘impurity’ and‘purity’ in nursing today leading to papers II-IV. Learning about ‘purity’ is possible through studying ‘impurity’. Audio recorded narrative interviews were performed to illuminate the meaning of living with malodorous exuding ulcers (II) and the meaning of caring for people with malodorous exuding ulcers (III). A phenomenological-hermeneutic method was used to analyse the nine transcribed interviews with patients (II) and 10 transcribed interviews with nurses (III). The comprehensive understanding of living with malodorous exuding ulcers (II) was formulated as being trapped in a debilitating process that slowly strikes one down. There is a longing for wholeness and purity. When finding consolation, i.e., encountering genuineness and feeling loved, regarded and respected as fully human despite ulcers, patients feel purified. The comprehensive understanding of caring for people with malodorous exuding ulcers (III) was formulated as being exposed to, and overwhelmed by suffering that is invading. One runs the risk of experiencing desolation when one cannot make the ulcers and malodour disappear and fails to protect patients from additional suffering. To illuminate nurses’ reflections on obstacles and possibilities providing care as desired by people with malodorous ulcers (IV), six nurses from a previous study (III) were interviewed. An illustration with findings from paper II was shown and participants were asked to reflect on obstacles and possibilities providing the care desired by patients. The 12 audio recorded transcribed interviews were analysed using qualitative content analyses. The interpretations were presented as one theme ‘striving to do ‘good’ and be good’. The sub-themes related to the obstacles were ‘experiencing clinical competence constraints’, ‘experiencing organisational constraints’, ‘experiencing ineffective communication’, ‘fearing failure’ and ‘experiencing powerlessness’. The sub themes related to possibilities were ‘spreading knowledge on ulcer treatments’, ‘considering wholeness’ and ‘creating clear channels of communication’. The meaning of living with ‘impurity’ in terms of malodorous exuding ulcers, and the meaning of caring for people with ‘impure’ bodies in institutions and in patients’ homes is interpreted as striving for purity. Patients experience impurity when feeling dirty, losing hope, and not being respected and regarded as fully human. Nurses experience impurity when failing to shield patients’ vulnerability and their own defencelessness, and when facing obstacles preventing them from providing good care and being good nurses. Both patients and nurses may experience purity through consolation. For nurses, mediating consolation presupposes being consoled by being recognised for their challenging work, being respected and included in multiprofessional teams supported by the health care organisation and the leaders. Then patients can become consoled, and feel restored and fully human again despite their contaminated body.

Abstract:
This qualitative study investigated the role mentoring plays in the professional development of women in student affairs. The goal of this research was not to prove a theory about women's mentoring relationships, but rather to richly describe these relationships in order to understand the impact they have had, and will continue to have on womens' professional lives. The results of this study is significant because it will provide a foundation for understanding the process of women's mentoring relationships in student affairs. The researcher conducted five indepth, open-ended interviews with women in various positions in student affairs in order to gather rich, descriptive data. The researcher selected women with whom she already has at least an acquaintance relationship. These women were from the Mid-West region. Each woman was at a different point in her professional development- graduate student, new professional, midlevel, and senior administrator. Women from both private and public institutions were interviewed. Four themes emerged from the interviews that each of these women discussed. These themes were, there are common characteristics of mentoring relationships; the impact mentoring has on the early development of the professional; the importance of having a female mentor; and the scarcity of female mentors at the top of the ladder.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to explore the emotional labour of domestic violence shelter workers. A qualitative approach was used and four professionals were interviewed. The interviewees described that they were expected to provide different types of services which include empowering their clients so that they can survive independently after leaving the shelter. The findings showed that the shelter workers hide or suppress different types of emotions, especially when they are frustrated or emotionally affected by the client's situation. According to the workers, they experienced stress as a consequence of the emotional labour, and they expressed that working in the field of domestic violence had made it difficult for them to trust men. Making a difference in the lives of the clients was described as a source of motivation and help them to cope with the negative aspects of the shelter work. Even though the findings cannot be generalised, the study provides comprehensive information about how emotional labour in this particular context can be perceived. The shelter workers described that the levels of satisfaction they get from helping clients resolve their problems were more significant than the negative consequences of emotional labour.

Den sociala videoplattformen YouTube firar i år sitt 10-årsjubileum och har under den tiden bildat en kraftfull kultur. Över en biljard användare som delar och tittar på videoklipp innebär att tusentals individer kan kalla webbplatsen YouTube för sin arbetsplats. Genom att skapa videoklipp som många tycker om bildas en enorm attraktion till vissa kanaler och utifrån detta genereras så kallade YouTube-kändisar. Den här kvalitativa studien dyker in i upplevelsen av att inneha en populär YouTube kanal genom att intervjua fem individer som besitter just en sådan. Är det verkligen drömjobbet som alla talar om? Resultaten visar en talande ökning av entreprenörskap på YouTube. För att bygga en publik krävs strategi och passion. Denna undersökning resulterar i en överläggande förståelse för hur deras personliga framgång har gått till, men även en aning om var YouTube är på väg i framtiden.

Abstract:
Background: In Sri Lanka, motherhood within marriage is highly valued. Sex out of wedlock is socially unacceptable and can create serious public health problems such as illegal abortions, suicide and infanticide, and single motherhood as a result of premarital sex is considered shameful. The way unmarried women facing single motherhood reflect on and make use of their agency in their social environments characterised by limited social and financial support has consequences for the health and well-being of both themselves and their children. The aim of this study was to explore and describe how unmarried women facing single motherhood in Sri Lanka handle their situation. Methods: This qualitative study comprised semi-structured interviews with 28 unmarried pregnant women or single mothers. The data were analysed by qualitative content analysis and the results related to the conceptual framework of social navigation. Results: The women facing single motherhood expressed awareness of having trespassed norms of sexuality through self-blame, victimhood and obedience, and by considering or attempting suicide. They demonstrated willingness to take responsibility for becoming pregnant before marriage by giving the child up for adoption, bringing up the child themselves, claiming a father for their child, refraining from marriage in the future, permanently leave their home environment, and taking up employment. Throughout the interviews, the women expressed fear of shame, and striving for familial and societal acceptance and financial survival. Conclusions: A social environment highly condemning of unmarried motherhood hindered these women from making strategic choices on how to handle their situation. However, to achieve acceptance and survival, the women tactically navigated norms of femininity, strong family dependence, a limited work market, and different sources of support. Limited access to resources restricted the women's sexual and reproductive health and rights, including their ability to make acceptable and healthy choices for themselves and their children.

Small nonprofit organizations are faced with limited resources and budgets for setting and reaching their goals. Some are nevertheless able to mitigate these challenges and achieve success. This thesis examines how this can be done. Organizations with excellent public relations programs have been found to be successful in achieving their goals (Grunig et al., 2002). Through the lens of the excellence model, this thesis analyzes, using in depth, semi-structured interview data, how senior managers of seven successful small nonprofits account for their success and address challenges as well as how their practices reflect the excellence model. This thesis does not test the excellence model in the context of small nonprofits, but rather attempts to establish recommendations for communication and PR success for small nonprofits based on what is learned from a small group of successful organizations.

Abstract:
This bachelor thesis, which is also the result of a Minor Field Studies scholarship, examines journalists’ situation in Cuba. The aim is to see the working conditions of the journalists by listening to how they themselves perceive their professional role, what their professional values are and what they see as opportunities and obstacles in their work. A major reason for undertaking this research is the theoretical perspective that emphasizes the importance of journalism studies in developing countries. The results are based mainly on fourteen qualitative interviews with Cuban journalists. By comparing the results with earlier studies including development journalism and studies about digital media in Cuba the study shows that Cuban journalists’ main duty is to defend the Communist Party. Many of the interviewed journalists experience self-censorship as a problem and blame it on Cuba's lack of a press law. Even if journalist salaries are extremely low, just like salaries of other professions in the state, the journalists highlight many positive aspects of their job. The education is free and some of the interviewees have opportunities to travel both within and outside the country because of their job. Cuban journalists are well educated, normally have a great passion for their profession and often have a strong desire to improve their work. The technological development in Cuba is slow but changes the conditions for the journalistic work and will continue to have a great influence on Cuban society.

This study investigates how risk management in general, and hedging in specific is used  in industries that produce and sell raw materials. We investigated the hedging strategies in the Swedish mining industry. We gathered data for this study from five interviews with CFO’s and Head of treasury’s from five different Swedish mining companies in order to get their  expertise and opinions of hedging. We found that companies only hedged their commodity prices if they were forced by circumstances outside of their control. We also found interesting similarities and differences between state-owned and publicly traded companies.

Abstract: Family history (FH) is a risk factor for many conditions that can affect pediatric patients. While there is no evidence of the clinical utility of FH taking in pediatrics and there is no standard of care as to FH taking, many suggestions were made as to what conditions should be covered in a pediatric FH assessment. There is also no evidence of the current practice. In this study the Theoretical Domains Framework was applied to FH taking and used to conduct semi-structured interviews with pediatricians to explore their FH taking practice. The pediatricians reported similar FH taking habits. Their FH taking was reported to include a wide range of conditions and determinants of health, and they used this information for a broad range of clinical tasks. FH taking in pediatric practice was reported to be complex and embedded with other aspects of practice. Résumé: Les antécédents familiaux (AF) sont des facteurs de risque pour plusieurs maladies affectant les patients pédiatriques. Alors qu'il n'y a ni données probantes concernant l'utilité des AF en pédiatrie ni normes pour la prise d'AF, plusieurs ont fait des suggestions quant à ce qui devrait être couvert par la prise d'AF. Il n'y a pas de données probantes décrivant la pratique actuelle de prise d'AF en pédiatrie. Dans cette étude, le Theoretical Domains Framework a été appliqué à la prise d'AF et utilisé afin de diriger des entrevues semi-structurées avec des pédiatres, dans le but de décrire leur pratique actuelle. Les pédiatres ont dit avoir des habitudes semblables quant à la prise d'AF. Cette dernière inclut plusieurs maladies et déterminants de la santé, et ils utilisent cette information pour plusieurs tâches. La prise d'AF en pédiatrie a été décrite comme étant complexe et très intégrée à leur pratique entière.

Abstract:
This thesis investigated the experiences of children who have a parent with a mental illness, using qualitative methods. It is divided into three separate sections, the first two written as standalone journal papers. Paper 1 is a systematic review and synthesis of qualitative studies exploring children's experiences of having a parent with a mental illness. The review used specific databases, a search of qualitative journals and a general internet search to identify relevant studies, and the subsequent application of inclusion/exclusion criteria and a quality appraisal assessment. 14 studies meeting inclusion and quality criteria were identified exploring the experiences of 163 children and young people aged between 5 and 22 years, from a range of countries, with a variety of parental mental health diagnoses. The review then involved synthesising the findings of these studies to generate five overarching themes which were found to influence children's experiences. Children who had some knowledge and understanding of their parent's mental illness were more likely to use effective coping strategies, have a more positive relationship with their parent, and experience fewer negative effects on them as a child. Paper 2 is an original research study which explored the experiences of children who have a parent with bipolar disorder, to see how this might impact on the child's emotional wellbeing. This qualitative study used 'In My Shoes', a computer assisted interview tool, to explore the experiences of ten children from England aged between 4 and 10 years. Subsequent comparison with their parent's accounts enabled greater insight into family life. Child and parent interview data was analysed using thematic and content analyses. The four main themes that emerged from the child interviews were: knowledge and awareness of bipolar disorder; perception of parents; managing family life with a 'bipolar' parent; and living in a family with bipolar disorder. The study concluded that further research was needed to understand children's perspectives, which should be taken into account when developing appropriate services and interventions to support children and parents with mental illness, including bipolar disorder. Finally the third section of the thesis was a critical appraisal of the literature review, research study and research process as a whole, including methodological reflections, implications for future research and clinical practice, and the researcher's personal reflections in undertaking the research. The findings were deemed vitally important for the future of families in which a parent has bipolar disorder.

This study is dealing with the adoption of Short Rotation Woody Crops (SRWC) by Swedish farmers during the last 20 years. SRWC is considered as an innovation in land use. An exploratory case study was set up by interviewing Swedish farmers and land owners to find out (1) about their decision process and reasons to start with Salix cultivation and (2) their opinions from today’s (time of interview, 2008) point of view about that decision. The aim is to improve German investigations in this field, to find out about reasons for farmers to decide in favour of or against SRWC. The development of Salix cultivation in Sweden seemed successful in the beginning of the 1990s as the total area of SRWC increased considerably until 1995. With the entry to the EU and participation in the common agricultural policy (CAP) in 1995 the positive development ended and has remained on the same level until this investigation. The study is based on 14 interviews with farmers who have been involved in SRWC. The interviews are part of the appendix A (Anhang A). On the basis of these 14 cases reasons and aspects for making decisions are evaluated in a qualitative method. Important factors for decision making in Sweden were in this study: agricultural policy before 1995, income from Salix, workload, service enterprise Agroenergi AB, hunting, site quality, and some miscellaneous aspects more. Further investigations should consider the type of farmer referring to his personal income structures as SRWC seems suitable for landowners who are financially independent from agricultural income. Another topic for further investigations should be the transfer of the obtained knowledge in Sweden to Germany.

This survey aimed to examine and analyze six companies' internal security. Six interviews were held with different sized companies, where the size of the office ranged from under ten to around 800 employees. The interviews contained questions regarding their information security, their perimeter security as well as the employees' personal security. The larger companies had more policies and security procedures than the smaller companies. Virus protection, banning USB flash drives from outside the company, security education and a well functioning report system are vital for a satisfying internal security. Interviewees from the smaller companies saw internal security principles as a necessity but also as an obstacle. The larger companies saw the same principles as something that would improve their security. These companies also had implemented more safety measures both in software, such as remote controls and guidelines for employees. Targeting problem areas with special educational campaigns helps employees defend themselves against social engineering. All companies that participated either develops software or are consultant companies in IT. They deliver IT solutions in one way or another and their internal security should reflect the same high standard and IT maturity. The smaller companies did not perform any risk analyses on which threats their company faces and did not have any safeguards in place if their employees do not conduct themselves correctly on their networks. Our opinion is that this should not be limited by the size of a company and all companies should perform risk analyses to be able to improve their internal security in the future.

The dynamic market situation also magnifies the need for marketers to monitor and analyse consumers' perceptions. The purpose of this study was, thus, to assist marketers in understanding the influence of targeted Facebook advertising through mobile devices on South African consumers' advertisement perceptions. The form of advertising investigated was in-stream advertisements. The aim of this study was to explore the role of South African consumers' emotions in relation to these consumers' attention to the targeted in-stream advertising on Facebook delivered via mobile phones. South African consumers view videos on their mobile phone through the Facebook platform, which can be interrupted by targeted Facebook advertising. This study investigated the role that the interruption of video watching bears in relation to the interpretation and perception of the advertisement by these consumers. Another objective was to explore the role of South African consumers' attitudes towards brands in relation to what these consumers remember from the advertisements delivered through mobile targeted in-stream Facebook advertising. The sample consisted of 13 South African consumers and was acquired using purposive sampling. This study was based on a perception-formation model, which is a composition formed from the perception models of different authors. The model was investigated using qualitative interviewing and the data gathered was analysed through qualitative content analysis. The results of the study provide support for the theoretical framework and suggest that consumers' perception of in-stream advertising on Facebook is influenced by various factors such as the nature of Facebook usage, emotions, the disruption caused by the advertising, the attitude towards the brand and the Facebook video viewed. Marketers may be able to influence consumers' perception of in-stream advertisements through more precise targeting, a better fit between the in-stream advertisements and the video and by limiting the advertisement occurrence. By shedding light on South African consumers' perceptions of targeted in-stream advertising on Facebook, this thesis could serve as a basis for marketers' decisions, and also lay the foundations for future academic research in this field.

Introduction: Depression is a common health problem. Some patients seek help from homeopaths as a complement or an alternative to conventional treatment. This may be due to reluctance to using or insufficient effect of “talking therapies” or antidepressants, or side-effects of such drugs. Insufficient evidence exists to determine whether homeopathy is acceptable, effective and safe. Aims: To evaluate the effectiveness of offering adjunctive treatment by homeopaths to patients with self-reported moderate to severe depression, and assess acceptability and safety. Methods: A pragmatic cohort multiple randomised controlled trial design was used. One third who fulfilled inclusion criteria were randomly selected to be offered a course of treatment by a homeopath. The primary outcome was the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), 6 months post-randomisation. An intention-to-treat analysis compared “Offer” and “No offer” groups. An instrumental-variables-analysis (IV) assessed effects of received treatment. Safety was assessed through patients’/practitioners’ reports. Qualitative interviews were used to learn about patients’ experiences. Results: The full sample (n=566) was recruited. One third (n= 185) were randomly selected to the “Offer group” were offered treatment by a homeopath, 40% (n=74/185) accepted the offer of treatment. Four-hundred-and-fifty-eight (81%) responded to the 6 month questionnaire. At 6 months, the “Offer” group (ITT-analysis) reported lower PHQ-9 scores (mean 1.4, 95% CI 0.2, 2.5) compared to the “No offer” group (p=0.019), with a small effect size (d=0.30). Secondary analyses showed similar results. IV-analysis showed 2.6 points (95% CI 0.5, 4.7, p=0.018) lower depression scores for those who received treatment by a homeopath (medium effect size, d=0.57). Although 14 adverse events were possibly linked to the intervention, most were mild, none were life-threatening and all were transient. Themes developed from 46 qualitative interviews with 33 patients regarding their experiences included feeling listened to, supported and accepted during consultations, and as a result, opening up and coming to realisations. Some patients described improvement in their mood, wellbeing, energy and physical symptoms, others experienced little or no change, or felt worse. Conclusion: These preliminary (6 month) results suggest that treatment provided by homeopaths for patients with self-reported depression is acceptable. The effect size (d=0.30) is comparable to “talking therapies”; however, wide confidence intervals preclude firm conclusions from being drawn. There was no evidence that treatment by a homeopath was unsafe. Analysis of 12-month results is now required.

Adolescent survivors of childhood cancer are a growing population with unique needs as they face a combination of challenges associated with normal development and returning to life after treatment completion (Wakefield et al., 2010). One specific need identified in the research literature includes the effective delivery of transitional care and planning (Hewitt, Greenfield, & Stovall, 2005). It has been suggested that the provision of transition care and planning can help facilitate the shift from one phase of care to another and promote positive transition experiences (National Cancer Institute, 2008). The shift from off-treatment to post-treatment and school reintegration have been identified in the literature as significant transitions for adolescent survivors of childhood cancer (Cabat & Shafer, 2002; MacLean, Foley, Ruccione, & Sklar, 1996). However, limited research has been conducted to explore these transitions from the perspectives of adolescent survivors of childhood cancer. An exploratory, qualitative study was conducted with eight adolescent survivors of childhood cancer between the ages of 14 and 17. A multiple case study research design was used to explore adolescent cancer survivors' perceptions of these transition processes, challenges associated with these transitions, and their beliefs about what supports/services were or would be beneficial during these transitions. Data collected for analysis included questionnaires, transcribed interviews and follow-up meetings, direct observation, documents, and parent feedback. These data were analyzed using a combination of a template organizing style, immersion/crystallization (I/C) approach, and multiple case study strategies (Borkan, 1999; Crabtree & Miller, 1999, Stake, 2005; Yin, 2008). Results indicated that adolescents perceived that change was occurring on some level during the shift from off-treatment to post-treatment and school reintegration but did not necessarily define this time as a "transition." They defined these times in personalized terms that reflected more subtle changes in their lives. The focus was placed on returning to a sense of "normalcy" and capitalizing on opportunities to regain some control over one's life. The improvement and/or absence of treatment residuals along with re-engagement in activities and roles served as signs, or indicators, that life was returning back to "normal" and provided feedback to the adolescent on their transition progress. Conversely, the presence of these signs continued to impact their lives as they restricted participation in desired activities and served as reminders that the effects of cancer and treatment extended beyond treatment completion. In addition to the presence of treatment residuals, fear of relapse also was a concern associated with the transition from off to post-treatment. However, adolescents tended not to let this be the focus of their lives. School reintegration challenges included disruption of school life and routines as well as academic and social concerns. Academic challenges included falling behind/catching up with work, maintaining motivation to do work, and readjusting to school demands and routines. Social challenges included answering peer questions, adjusting to peer awkwardness/discomfort, and managing peer reactions to their physical side effects. These challenges were not perceived by adolescents as sources of significant distress and, often times, they adapted and employed coping strategies to address these concerns in the school setting. Adolescents also varied in their perceived need for transitional care and support during these transitions. Support received during the shift from off-treatment to post-treatment included advice from health care team members as well as relationships with peer cancer survivors across school, community, hospital, and camp settings. They received a variety of academic and social support during school reintegration. Teachers, family members, and peers provided academic support across home, hospital, and school settings. Teachers were a particularly important source of academic assistance. Accommodations and modifications also were provided to these adolescents at school. Peers, teachers, and other school staff provided social support. Based on the findings of the study, suggestions for future research and practical implications are offered.

Background and aim: The consumption of illicit drugs remains stable among youths in Sweden, yet an increase in consumption has been observed in affluent areas. This study aims to explore the reasons for illicit drug use in these areas and if this could be further understood using Social Identity Theory. Methods: Twenty participants from four high schools in an affluent municipality participated in semi-structured in-depth interviews regarding substance use. The interviews were coded using thematic analysis and six themes emerged.  Results: Social influence was the prominent influence for illicit drug use. Furthermore, this use was normalized and availability was high. The influence of family norms and outspoken negative effects of drugs caused a decrease in consumption. Conclusion: These results are in accordance with previous research claiming social influence on illicit drug use, and further confirms this in an affluent area. Social Identity Theory (i.e. how informants categorize, identify and compare themselves with their social group) had an impact on consumption.

The purpose of this thesis was to examine what people who had been interviewed and quoted in a local newspaper feel about being interviewed and what they think of the published article. Our aim was also to make a comparison of “known” sources and “unknown” sources.

The main issues were: How do the sources of a local newspaper perceive that they are being treated in the actual interview? What do the sources think of the published article in which they are quoted? Do they trust media and journalists in general? Do the opinions differ between those who are used to being interviewed and those who are unfamiliar with the situation?

This study was carried out through qualitative interviews with respondents who have been quoted in a local newspaper in Jönköping, Jönköpings-Posten. Articles were selected from three days in November. The articles should be based on one or more interviews and had to be large. At least one person should be quoted more than once in the selected article. In total 30 interviews were made.

The study showed that the sources overall were pleased with the article and the way they were being presented. Nor was there anything to complain about when it came to the journalist’s behaviour. But almost everyone expressed certain scepticism when it came to confidence in media in general. However, most of the persons interviewed had an understanding of the ways that journalists work. We were surprised that the result was so positive and also that the people that were not used to being interviewed were more positive than those who often appear in the local press.

Research in life-course criminology has been studying turning points away from criminality. There is although a limited amount of research that has been focusing on parenthood and especially on fatherhood as a potential turning point. The available studies show mixed results in this topic and the findings suggest that there are factors that can both form and restrict fatherhood as a potential turning point towards desistance. The aim for the present thesis is therefore to get a better understanding of fatherhood as a potential turning point from persistent offending and to examine the role and meaning of fatherhood in the criminal careers of Swedish former criminals. Qualitative method in the form of retrospective semi- structured interviews has been used to collect data and five former offenders that became fathers during their criminal career participated in the study. The data have been analysed with systematic text condensation and the results indicate that the men did not desist after becoming fathers. They did however have both intended and unintended breaks from criminality when their child was born, but the criminal lifestyle was their first choice and their children were put on the second place. Relationships to friends and in some cases to the mother of the child was a restricting factor for fatherhood to become a turning point. Another factor that restricted fatherhood from being a potential turning point was human agency. The men concluded that an offending father can not receive help from society if there is no will for the father to desist.

Research shows that there is an increasing number of international students studying in universities and colleges in Canada, with China a top source country of international students. However, Chinese students’ experience studying in Canada has been rarely researched. Taking University of Ottawa as a case, this study explores the experience of Chinese students in terms of their relationships with instructors through a relational communication lens. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with Chinese first year students studying at the University of Ottawa to explore their experience of student-instructor relationships, to understand their overall experience of the student-instructor relationship, to identify the contributors and hindrances to the development of positive student-instructor relationships, and to explore the impact of such relationship on the students. Findings indicate that Chinese students experience different education and acculturation which influences their overall experience of student-instructor relationships. Teacher immediacy, rapport and classroom justice are factors that affect the development of such relationships, whose impact include both academic and social outcomes.

Child sexual abuse is a burning issue raising concern because of the statistics which indicate that one in five children are victims of some kind of abuse. The protective program, the “Underwear Rule” was launched by the European Council in order to inform and equip parents, caregivers and children towards this sensitive issue. The program is addressed to all European countries in the exact same form and content, with only differentiation the language. This study tries to examine theoretically and empirically the applicability of the “Underwear Rule” to Greek parents, in the sense that each country has its own cultural background and cast of mind, which differentiate the acceptance and the applicability of the Rule. This relates mainly to prior research of Kirana exploring Greek parents’ perspective towards sexual education, as well to Babatsiko’s research about developing national protective programs corresponding to local and cultural demands. An interview study has been carried out, focusing on parents’ point of view about the Underwear Rule. The analysis is based on the subjective experiences and thoughts of seven parents whose children are in the age-target group covered by the Underwear Rule. The parents’ interviews have been analyzed thematically. Overall this study argues that The Underwear Rule is a good protective program, but parents would like improvements and enrichment in order the burning topic of child sexual abuse to be covered more effectively

Our theoretical base includes to explain what source criticism is, about media literacy, the power media has in the Swedish society, the effects that media can create, and the effects of internet. This study consists of eleven interviews where knowledge and awareness regarding source criticism are in focus. Our interviewees have contributed with diverse reasoning and thoughts, which will be presented closer in this study. A central part of this study also contains questions about the reasoning of the eleven media students regarding source criticism in relation to their career choice and position in society.Our result shows that the knowledge and awareness regarding source criticism amongst the eleven students are high, however they also express that this might not be the case amongst the population in general. All interviewees testify that source criticism is a subject that affects and that it is a high possibility it does not get the attention it deserves.

Six women participated in a qualitative study to understand women's experiences with abortion. The women ranged in age from 52 to 26, and were at least five years post-abortion. A questionnaire was developed using a stress and coping model as a guide to answer the following: relevant primary and reappraisal processes; problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies; resources; and personal and environmental constraints. The results give the women's individual experiences as well as the themes that were consistent for the participants. The women all appraised the situation of an unplanned pregnancy as stressful. All of the participants viewed having the child as a threat to their education, career, or relationship with family. Although all of the women thought some part of the procedure was more stressful than they had anticipated, all found ways to cope with differing levels of stress. The women saw their friends, family, ob-gyn physicians, priest, and clinic staff as resources during the experience. The women most often reported that religious beliefs constrained their abilities to cope. They also reported a lack of information about the abortion procedure and possible physical and emotional effects as environmental constraints. Overall, all but one participant would make the same decision, and all viewed themselves as coping well with a stressful life event.

State legislatures have variable levels of professionalism. Measures of state legislative professionalism typically include metrics such as the number of legislative staff, legislative session length, and legislator compensation. This research considers the influence of variability in levels of legislative professionalism on the state’s oversight process. Few prior studies engage the legislative oversight process in states. To fill this gap, this research takes a grounded theory approach that uses thirty-three interviews with legislators, legislative staff, committee staff, and legislative research organizations in five states to test existing concepts and to develop new directions for research. The current scholarship on oversight and legislative institutions emphasizes the importance of broad factors like elections and committees, as well as more specific concepts like inter-branch conflict, partisanship, and legislative term-limits. This research confirms and extends those ideas, reaching the conclusion that oversight in states is a deeply political action. A central contribution of this work is a consideration of how the oversight process in states operates on the ground. The interviews uncover that many measures of professionalism often perform in unforeseen ways than what might expected. For instance, a lengthy legislative session can prohibit oversight actors from performing oversight functions. Conversely, long legislative interim periods provide actors with the space to conduct meaningful reviews of administrative action. This research also advances understandings of state legislative research organizations – like the Virginia Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission and Texas Sunset Commission – which play a vital role in performing meaningful legislative oversight. To catalyze these ideas a new concept, the oversight entrepreneur, is used to describe how stakeholders use the oversight process to achieve their preferences and enhance their reputations. The interviews contained here also expose the importance of each state’s individual context – including Constitutional, institutional, normed and historical factors. The dissimilarities that play out across states (and their secondary effects) demonstrate that future scholars would be well served to adopt caution in the application of concepts across contexts.

The thesis aims to highlight successful stories of female ex-offender reentry into the community. Success, rather than failure, seems to be a current research gap in reentry literature. To gain an insight on the matter, semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with seven female ex-offenders. These women had previously taken part of the program, Exodus Ministries in Dallas, Texas. Systematic Text Condensation (STC) was utilized to analyze the qualitative data from the interviews. The results were then discussed in a theoretical framework in regard to previous research. Two theories were utilized; namely, the theory of “making good” by Maruna (2001) and the theory of cognitive transformation by Giordano, Cernkovich and Rudolph (2002). In conclusion, the results of the thesis point to reentry programs, such as Exodus Ministries; motherhood; religion; fundamental life changes; identity transformation and utilizing resources as essential factors needed for successful reentry into the community upon release from institutionalization.

As the needs of society changed, states faced increasing pressure from the federal government to raise educational standards. States adopted rigorous standards, however many students failed to meet defined proficiency levels, necessitating summer school attendance or grade retention. Factors associated with academic failure have been extensively documented in the academic literature. The factors identified in the research can be organized into six categories, including motivation, age and ability, withdrawal from school, parents and guardians, school practices, and teacher practices. The purpose of the current study was to explore middle school students’ perceptions of factors which contributed to the academic outcomes necessitating enrollment in academic courses in summer school, and what factors they believe could have made a positive impact. This study focused on the following research questions: How did middle school students, enrolled in one or more academic courses in summer school, perceive (1) academic outcomes and to what these were attributed, (2) the relationship among ability, effort, and outcome, (3) sources and levels of motivation, (4) sources and levels of school bonds, (5) interactions and relationships with school personnel, and (6) the role and level of involvement of adults in their academic lives? A qualitative, ethnographic design, with detailed descriptions of the methodological considerations and rich, thick narrative, was used to explore the research questions. Seventeen middle school students, repeating academic courses in summer school, were interviewed. Emergent themes were identified from inductively coded interviews. The analysis revealed that participants primarily accepted responsibility for academic outcomes but also identified distractions as a contributing factor. Teachers were seen as playing a role in both creating and removing distractions. Participants perceived work ethic as positively correlated with intelligence, and perceptions of ability tended to be related to duration of exerted effort. Negative social bonds were perceived as adversely affecting participants’ academic performance, and participants reported few positive interactions or relationships with school personnel. Negative consequences were the primary means used by adults to motivate participants, and too little, too late characterized active adults engagement in participants’ academics. Perceived levels of effort exerted and concern exhibited by an adult paralleled academic outcomes.

The purpose of this research was to describe how eight selected women administrators employed in student affairs at Ball State University utilized five leadership practices of challenging the process, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, modeling the way, and encouraging the heart. There is an abundance of research on leadership, however very few studies have identified the leadership actions of women in student affairs administration in higher education.A case study methodology was used for this current research. Eight informants were purposively selected from a population of 26 women administrators employed in student affairs at Ball State University. Three interviews were conducted with each of the eight informants. Retrospective, structured, and semi-structured interviews, as described by Fraenkel and Wallen (1996) were utilized. There was not an available interview guide for use in this study, therefore one was constructed.Four conclusions were drawn from the results of this study. These included the following:1. There were a number of themes found that indicated these eight informants are relational leaders.2. The evidence collected suggested that leadership is situational, contextual, and influenced by the people involved.3. Experience was identified most often as a way these eight informants tested their own leadership skills, the skills of others, and helped others learn leadership skills.4. Learning from mentors was an important way these informants developed their leadership skills.Results of this study were not generalized beyond these eight informants. However, this study contributed new information to the field of leadership studies by describing the leadership practices of eight women administrators employed in student affairs. This study provided insights on the actions and behaviors that these informants used when exercising leadership.

There is now good evidence to show that family therapy is effective in helping families with a wide range of presenting problems (Carr, 2014a; Shadish & Baldwin, 2003; Stratton, 2011). Although family therapy has a strong evidence base, much of the focus in the research literature has been on outcomes; far fewer studies have attempted to investigate the process of change in family therapy, and there has been a call for greater research in this area (Heatherington et al., 2005; Sexton & Datchi, 2014; Vilaça, Margarida, & Ana Paula, 2014). The inability to evidence how the process of family therapy works leaves it open to criticisms concerning credibility. Since family therapy is one of the few alternatives to one-to-one talking therapies (such as cognitive behavioural therapy) (Stratton & Lask, 2013), its devaluing would limit client choice. In order to justify its position as an alternative to one-to-one ways of working, family therapy needs to be able to evidence the link between theories of change, the process of change and outcomes. The present study attempts to address some of the above concerns by exploring how family therapists in the U.K understand the change process in family therapy both in theory, and in their practice. In addition, it explores how the rationale that therapists’ provide for their interventions in specific therapy sessions relates to how families conceptualise and experience change in the same sessions. A multi-modal triangulation methodology was used, whereby eight family therapists were interviewed in prospective qualitative interviews, and then two families and two family therapy teams were interviewed while they reviewed therapy sessions using the process methodology of Inter-personal process recall (IPR). The two methodologies revealed several themes. Three super-ordinate themes emerged from the prospective interviews: ‘safe-space’, ‘perspective taking’ and ‘privileging the change’. The IPR interviews yielded four super-ordinate themes: two from family therapy teams; ‘expressing a clear rationale’ and ‘linking theory and process is difficult’ and two from families ‘things we found helpful’ and ‘things that we didn’t like’. Convergence and divergence between the data sets are discussed as well as implication for further research and limitations of the current study.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate whether there is a trust between social media influencers and their followers, and if so, to what extent. The methodological approach consists of an analysis of interview material, expert interviews and selected comment boxes on social media. By conducting qualitative analysis, this thesis examines audience reception to promotional content produced by social media influencers in collaboration with the Swedish interior design brand Royal Design. Based on the theories of parasocial interaction, two-step flow and opinion leadership, and modes of reception, concepts such as audience advertising response, relationship to influencers and the level of trust are investigated and concluded in order to find common patterns around audience reception to influencer marketing. The analysis shows that there is indeed a certain amount of trust towards social media influencers among the sample group especially if they recognise the influencer, however, the trust is not full and unconditional. The audience reception of influencer marketing content both in the interviews and comment boxes was mostly positive, and some respondents seemed to have developed sympathy towards social media personas featured in the advertisements, praising them for being personal and authentic. The results of the study imply that while the credibility and motives of influencer content are questioned by some, it is generally perceived as a more enjoyable alternative to traditional advertising formats.

Much research related to incarceration and re-entry has been focused on male models, and thus ignoring the unique circumstances of women offenders. Previous research argues that evident differences are found between the two sexes and these should not be neglected. Furthermore, both previous research and the theory of cognitive transformation has been utilized to analyse the results in a theoretical framework. The aim with this thesis is to explore the difficulties women face when re-entering into society after a criminal lifestyle. Hence, understand how women encounter and tackle these problems. Qualitative semistructured interviews with six former female addicts and offenders and one operations manager were tape-recorded. Transcription data was analysed using thematic analysis. The results showed that it was difficult to re-establish a healthy relationship with children. All the women came from dysfunctional families and no support from family members was a challenging aspect in the re-entry process. Substance abuse was also found among all the women, which showed that it competed with both parental and employment responsibilities and finding a job was easier than holding down one. Furthermore, ending contact with antisocial peers was important, however, meeting new people was difficult. Lastly, the results showed that all the women had subjective motivation keeping them on the path of lasting change. This study concludes three ways to improve female re-entry processes, (1) greater aid to women with substance abuse, (2) continued therapeutic assistance post treatment and, (3) positive role-modelled guidance for young women.

Kalmar Municipality has in 2008-2010 made an effort to educate managers on gender, with the goal of mainstreaming gender into public activities so that all citizens should feel safe in that treatment and services are designed and resources are distributed equally to both sexes living conditions and needs. The overall aim of this study was to examine whether the training effort has paid off, and how gender mainstreaming has been implemented in the different activities. We have used a qualitative approach, which we examined through interviews managers' approach to gender equality.

Gender was generally described as an important issue of all respondents, and all were working to mainstream gender into their activities and workplaces. The results show that the operational and management needed clearer directives and strategies in their efforts to promote gender equality. Education was necessary because personal definition of gender may differ from the control contents of the documents. We found that many respondents saw the barrier of time, but also difficulties in changing attitudes and preferences of employees. As a result, we realized that the problem was bigger than that, when society is ruled by norms and values. After analysis of empirical data, we concluded that gender mainstreaming is a difficult subject, and it demands hard work, efforts and resources.

Background: The only treatment for celiac disease consists of excluding gluten. Gluten is a protein complex found in wheat, rye, and barley, which are cereals commonly used in bread, pasta, pizza, etc. The overall aims of this thesis were to study; what happens with food choices and nutrient intakes when individuals are prescribed a gluten-free diet and what consequences this has on the everyday lives of young women and young men dealing with this disease. Methods: A food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to study nutrient intake and how food choices were affected after a change to a gluten-free diet. The FFQ was sent to 12-13 years-old adolescents who took part in a large Swedish celiac screening study. The following three groups were studied: previously diagnosed with celiac disease, screening-diagnosed and non-celiac controls. The first FFQ was sent out before the screening-diagnosed adolescents had been told they had celiac disease, and the second was sent 12-18 months after they had been prescribed the gluten-free treatment. Semi-structured interviews were performed five years later in order to study how everyday life was affected by celiac disease in seven young women and seven young men. The interviews were analyzed by content analysis. Results: The previously diagnosed celiac disease group reported a nutrient intake in line with the non-celiac control group. Most of the participants reported nutrient intakes above the estimated average requirements. A diagnosis of celiac disease altered the intake of some foods, and this was shown by comparing the results from the baseline FFQ before the diagnosis and the follow-up FFQ after. The young women and young men reported similar experiences of the gluten-free food, but the perceived consequences of living with celiac disease differed between genders. Conclusion: This thesis shows that after a diagnosis of celiac disease food changes are necessary in order to be compliant with the gluten-free diet. One common effect is that food options will be reduced. However, as long the food intake is gluten-free, varied, and in sufficient quantity there is no reason to worry more about the nutritional intake of adolescents diagnosed with celiac disease than there is for their non-celiac peers. The findings in this thesis also show that society’s gender order has a great impact on how young women and young men experience their everyday lives, with celiac disease, and with the gluten-free diet.

Sustainable development is a broad and difficult concept. The concept has been clarified and given more space in the steering document - the curriculum for preschool 2018 - with its own heading together with health and well-being. Sustainable development can be divided into three different dimensions, the ecological, social and economic dimension. In this study, sustainable development is discussed overall, but, however, delves into the ecological dimension. The ecological dimension is referred to as sustainable development (climate and natural environment) with the support of a qualitative study and individual interviews in preschools as a method. A total of five preschool teachers at two different preschools are interviewed. The purpose of the study is to elucidate some different perceptions that preschool teachers have about sustainable development in preschool. What emerges from the analysis is that all interviewed preschool teacher’s value sustainable development (climate and natural environment) highly within preschool, and that this is a relevant area to work with. The result shows that all preschool teachers consider that they have an important role in supporting children's learning in sustainable development and that it is the preschool teachers who have the main responsibility and should be teaching. What emerges most clearly from the interviews with preschool teachers is to awaken children's interest in digital tools and to talk with children about sustainable development. Prerequisites to work on sustainable development in preschool always exist, according to the interviewed preschool teachers, but some of them emphasize that it is up to each individual to address it if one wants to work with it in preschool. It is more spontaneous teaching than planned teaching in sustainable development, say the interviewed preschool teachers. They further believe that one works with sustainable development on a daily basis without consciously knowing about and thinking about it

In an increasingly globalized world and with rapid advancement in technology, there is a need to grapple more intently with social implications of engineering and technology. In the engineering community, these trends direct us to more critically consider how engineering and technology affect humanity and to interact effectively in diverse populations. Empathy, an ability that is central to the process of understanding and considering others, has been recognized as a valuable competency in the education of engineers. In engineering education specifically, several studies have pursued definition of empathy in the engineering context and its importance in engineering curriculum. Studies suggest that service learning is a useful pedagogical approach for supporting students in the development of social competencies, including empathy. However, it is not clear how this development happens. In this dissertation, I sought to understand engineering students' experiences in a service-learning context to learn the ways in which empathy emerged in their descriptions and the elements of participants' experiences that shaped their empathy development. My participants were fourteen engineering students from two institutions, a small private university and a large public university, with both groups involved in at least one-semester of a service-learning course. I describe my phenomenological approach to this investigation and share my findings. Notably, I found eight main themes in my investigation of the role of empathy within the service-learning experiences described namely: changing perspective about others, having a sense of responsibility to others, keeping an open mind, inquiring of stakeholders, seeing others' points of view, understanding others' situations, being able to adjust goals and compromise and recognizing and/or welcoming difference. Additionally, I found both elements of participants' experiences designed into the course and those that were unprecedented relevant in shaping their empathy development. I also discuss the implications of these findings for engineering education and practice.
