Abstract:
Our study documents and analyzes the absence of genetic diversity and structure of the Mapleleaf (Quadrula quadrula (Rafinesque, 1820)) (Bivalvia: Unionidae) mussel in the Lake Winnipeg, Assiniboine River, and Red River drainages (Manitoba, Canada). Previous studies have revealed patterns of genetic diversity and structure in the Mississippi and Ohio river drainages, as well as in the Laurentian Great Lakes drainage. Genotypes from six variable microsatellite loci showed that the Q. quadrula population in Manitoba was significantly differentiated from the population in the Great Lakes drainage (Ontario, Canada), supporting the existence of two Designatable Units in Canada. Conversely, there was no evidence of genetic structure within the sampled range of Q. quadrula in Manitoba. The lack of genetic structure in Q. quadrula across its distribution in Manitoba reflected its post-glacial history and use of a vagile host and necessitates that efforts should be made to ensure connectivity and maintain gene flow across the region. Given that the evidence suggests that Manitoba Q. quadrula belong to a single genetic population, movement of hatchery-propagated juvenile Q. quadrula, adult Q. quadrula, or glochidia-carrying host catfish sourced from any location in Manitoba could be used to augment declining populations or at-risk locations in Manitoba.

Abstract:
In 2014 and 2015, 27 sites in Rondeau Bay, Ontario, Canada, were surveyed for freshwater mussels. Rondeau Bay is a large coastal wetland on the north shore of Lake Erie. Twenty-three species were identified from 120 live mussels, 15 fresh whole shells, 329 weathered whole shells, and 1121 weathered valves. Live individuals of the following species were collected: Eastern Pondmussel (Ligumia nasuta; endangered in Canada), Giant Floater (Pyganodon grandis), Round Pigtoe (Pleurobema sintoxia;endangered in Canada), and Three-ridge (Amblema plicata). Fresh whole shells of the Mapleleaf (Quadrula quadrula; threatenedin canada) were also found. Most species (78%), including 7 species at risk, were collected only as weathered shells. These results indicate a substantial decline in freshwater mussel diversity since the Zebra Mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) invasion of Lake Erie. Evidence shows that a viable population of only Giant Floater remains.

Abstract:
Freshwater mussels of the family Unionidae are among the world’s most imperilled animals. A third of Canadian species have been assessed by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada as Extirpated, Endangered, Threatened, or Special Concern, with losses attributed to natural system modifications such as damming, pollution, exploitation for buttons and pearls, urbanization, and the introduction and subsequent effects of aquatic invasive species. In the Great Lakes basin, the introduction of dreissenid mussels in the 1980s caused catastrophic declines, with remnant populations restricted to lotic riverine habitats. In southwestern Ontario, the Canard River is the largest remaining direct tributary of the Detroit River that could provide a source of mussels to aid natural recovery. In 2019, nine sites in the Canard River were sampled using a timed-search approach (4.5 person-hours/site) with a combination of tactile searching by hand and mussel scoops (7-mm mesh) or underwater viewers. The search yielded 362 individuals of eight species, including two Species at Risk, Mapleleaf (Quadrula quadrula) and Lilliput (Toxolasma parvum), which had never been previously recorded in the Canard River.

Johnson, Matthew. "A Quantitative Survey of the Freshwater Mussel Fauna in the Powell River of Virginia and Tennessee, and Life History Study of Two Endangered Species, Quadrula sparsa and Quadrula intermedia." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/31641.

Full text
Abstract:
Qualitative and quantitative sampling was conducted along a 165 km reach of the river from PRKM 269.4 near Dryden, VA to PRKM 104.8 near Harrogate, TN. Twenty-nine species were observed throughout the entire river, and the highest diversity of 23 species was collected at PRKM 152.6. Mussel abundances (mussels/person-h and mussels/m2) ranged from 0.33 to 21.98 mussels/person-h and 0.00 to 2.24 mussels/m2. Recent recruitment (individuals < 40 mm, depending on the species) was observed for 15 species, including the endangered Epioblasma brevidens, Lemiox rimosus, and Quadrula intermedia. The greatest number of species (6) with evidence of recent recruitment also was found at PRKM 152.6. Data from the quantitative survey were used to simulate several sampling protocols that could be used to develop a long-term monitoring program for the Powell River. Five sites, PRKMs 197.9, 171.4, 159.6, 152.6, and 129.4, were selected for long-term monitoring because of high mussel densities and species richness. Six sampling protocols were simulated using the statistical program MONITOR to determine which protocols, if any, could monitor statistically significant changes in mussel abundance at rates + 10%. Each of the simulated sampling protocols lasted between 15 and 30 y, and employed quantitative sampling at 3 to 5 y intervals. None of the sampling protocols simulated during this study were able to detect declines in mussel abundance < 10%. Two sampling programs were able to detect increases in mussel abundance > 6% when the level of significance was > 0.10, and four sampling programs were able to detect a density increase of > 8% when the level of significance was 0.05. Despite the inability to monitor declines in mussel abundances, a long-term monitoring program is needed for the Powell River. Because qualitative sampling has been repeatedly shown to document species presence more effectively than quantitative sampling, it should be used to monitor changes in species presence and distribution. Quantitative sampling should be employed to monitor juvenile recruitment and changes in size-class structure of populations. Quantitative sampling also should be conducted to monitor overall mussel abundance at sites. Despite the inability to statistically detect changes in mussel density in the Powell River, quantitative sampling can provide valuable information, and the data collected can be used to qualitatively monitor changes in total density at sites. Both species share a similar distribution in the Powell River. Eighteen specimens of Quadrula sparsa were collected between PRKM 230.9 and 152.6, and 68 individuals of Q. intermedia were collected between PRKM 230.9 and 129.4. The highest density of each species was collected at PRKM 152.6, and recent recruitment was observed at PRKMs 152.6 and 153.4. Fresh-dead and relic shells of both species were thin-sectioned to determine individual growth rate and life span. These species complete the majority of their growth during the first 10 y of life, and likely live for a total of 40 to 50 y. One gravid female of Q. intermedia was collected during this study, but no gravid females of Q. sparsa were observed.

Hammontree, Sarah. "Evaluating the Habitat Requirements of the Golden Orb Mussel (Quadrula Aurea) for Conservation Purposes." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2013. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc271827/.

Full text
Abstract:
Many freshwater mussels are imperiled, due to a number of interrelated factors such as habitat alteration, degradation of water quality, and impoundments. The Golden Orb mussel (Quadrula aurea, I. Lea, 1859) is endemic to the state of Texas and is currently a candidate for the endangered species list, as the number of known populations has been declining in recent years. Little is currently known about Q. aurea aside from basic distribution data. This study is focused on evaluating a combination of macro-habitat and micro-habitat variables to determine their influence on the distribution and density of this species. Macro-habitat variables, including dominant land cover, surface geology, and soil erodibility factor, did not have a significant relationship with mussel distributions. The best model of micro-habitat variables that impacts the Q. aurea distributions is comprised of relative substrate stability (RSS) at moderate flows and current velocity at low flows. For all mussel species in this study, current velocity at low flows is the primary variable that influences distribution. Q. aurea are associated with habitats where larger sediment particles (large gravel and cobble) help to stabilize the substrate in areas with higher current velocities. An understanding of the preferred habitats for Q. aurea can be used to help focus conservation efforts and practices.

Abstract:
The anthropogenic alteration of riverine ecosystems has led to declines in the abundance and diversity of freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionoida) worldwide. Central Texas is home to a diverse freshwater mussel fauna including three candidates for federal listing under the Endangered Species Act. Surveys conducted over the last few decades suggest many of the endemic freshwater mussel species in Texas exist in small isolated populations that may be vulnerable to the deleterious effects of genetic diversity loss. Microsatellite primers from two closely related species were used to identify a set of genetic markers that functioned in the Golden Orb (Quadrula aurea). Microsatellite markers were then applied to document the population genetic structure of Q. aurea within and among three connected river drainages in southeastern Texas. Gene flow within existing Q. aurea populations appears high indicating little potential for genetic issues stemming from isolation and inbreeding. Two weakly divergent admixed populations were identified occupying the San Antonio and Guadalupe/San Marcos rivers. Population genetic structure was related to river basin affiliation, but results for environmental factors were unresolved. Current effective population size estimates are large for the Guadalupe/San Marcos drainage and moderately large for the San Antonio drainage and there is no clear genetic evidence of contemporary population declines. Transport in the glochidial phase by a highly mobile host fish, the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus), may provide a mechanism for maintaining connectivity among spatially discrete mussel beds and deserves further study. Information on the occurrence and habitat associations of Q. aurea and two other threatened freshwater mussel species was documented. Quantification of the population genetic structure for Q. aurea provides important information needed for the management of this species, a baseline for understanding future changes, and insight into the factors that shape the population genetic structure of other threatened unionids in Texas.

Caplan, Paul Lomax. "JPEG : the quadruple object." Thesis, Birkbeck (University of London), 2013. http://bbktheses.da.ulcc.ac.uk/32/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis, together with its practice-research works, presents an object-oriented perspective on the JPEG standard. Using the object-oriented philosophy of Graham Harman as a theoretical and also practical starting point, the thesis looks to provide an account of the JPEG digital object and its enfolding within the governmental scopic regime. The thesis looks to move beyond accounts of digital objects and protocols within software studies that position the object in terms of issues of relationality, processuality and potentiality. From an object-oriented point of view, the digital object must be seen as exceeding its relations, as actual, present and holding nothing in reserve. The thesis presents an account of JPEG starting from that position as well as an object-oriented account of JPEG’s position within the distributed, governmental scopic regime via an analysis of Facebook’s Timeline, tagging and Haystack systems. As part of a practice-research project, the author looked to use that perspective within photographic and broader imaging practices as a spur to new work and also as a “laboratory” to explore Harman’s framework. The thesis presents the findings of those “experiments” in the form of a report alongside practice-research eBooks. These works were not designed to be illustrations of the theory, nor works to be “analysed”. Rather, following the lead of Ian Bogost and Mark Amerika, they were designed to be “philosophical works” in the sense of works that “did” philosophy.

Abstract:
Recent advances in image data compression technology made it possible to record motion pictures onto a CD-ROM This paper is to report our achievements in which motion pictures were recorded using MPEG to a CD-ROM having quadruple density to that of the conventional CD-ROM and then played back at a quadruple data transfer rate using an optical pick-up with a laser diode of wavelength 635 nm. That is, one-hour playback pictures were obtained with only a disk.
