Abstract:
This work describes a practical and theoretical investigation of aerodynamic characteristics of a 1:6,5 scale model of a light twin-engined Piper Seneca III aircraft. Basically, two configurations are considered in this evaluation: clean wing and pusher nacelle. The principal objective is to evaluate the aerodynamic characteristics of the pusher configuration in three different positions, in order to obtain practical and theoretical data with reference to static pressure distribution on the surface of the aerofoil and of the nacelle in a power-off condition. The methodology employed used low speed wind tunnel test for the acquisition of experimental data for a selection of angles of attach, as cited. The generation of numerical data, to be compared the experimental equivalent, is though the use of a low order panel method. The experimental and theoretical results show that the presence of pusher nacelle in the positions mentioned generated interference, reducing the local lift of the aerofoil.

Walker, Greg Delany. "Embracing failure: the life between polite and pushed." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2018. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6329.

Abstract:
My name is Greg Delany Walker. I’m an MFA candidate in Theatre Arts with a specialization in Acting at the University of Iowa. The following is my thesis that addresses my artistic process as an actor. My main focus in this thesis is to unpack my beliefs about what makes good acting and how I personally achieve that. I detail many schools of thought that pair well together to seek out vulnerability in actors. Vulnerability is my chief struggle as an actor given that I have a tendency to overthink things and rely more on intellect than on passionate expression in my daily life and in my work. That tendency leads me to be polite as an actor, which has gotten in the way of my being able to reach my full potential. I discovered time and time again how important it is to understand and embody acting techniques so deeply that I can let them go. All the different techniques of analysis, physical and voice work are essential, but they need to transition to being second nature. The techniques outlined in this thesis, learned in my life and through the program at the University of Iowa, have to be so ingrained that I don’t need to think of them in the moment on stage. The key to being present on stage seems so simple in a way, but it has been a great challenge for me to fully let go of control to allow for my potential public failure and humiliation. The times that I’ve embraced failure have been the strongest moments for me as an actor because of the power of risk. My hope is that by detailing my own process and experiences, with that idea of building technique and releasing into the present moment, that others could be further empowered to do the same in acting or in life.

Abstract:
Newspapers are often bundled and packet on pallets to secure transport. Packing thebundles on pallets are often done with an automatic palletizer. For reliable operation, the bundle needed to have a correct position and orientation on the infeed conveyor.Wrong orientation can happen when the bundle is pushed from conveyor to thepalletisers conveyor. The main to reasons is wrong timing that leads to rotation of thebundle and to high pushing force that leads to tumbled bundles. The goal of thisproject is to make a prototype of a system that automatically adapts the pressure andsignal when to push using two laser sensors. One sensor sends a digital signal if laserbreaks, the other measure distance, e.g. bundle hight. The software was developed onan Arduino Uno board, and two interface board was made for voltage levelconversions. The prototype system managed to change pressure for different bundlesizes and timed the pushing signal correctly.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The main task for most development-intensive organisations is to create, develop and commercialise new products and services. The technology push (TP) concept is considered an important competitive advantage for companies trying to create breakthrough products. Because development processes are risky and failure rates are high, especially in the case of technology pushed projects, defined success factors are valuable knowledge for the management of development-intensive firms. The prime objective of this study is to present a compact set of TP project success factors in an information and communication technology (ICT) context. Because the literature on new product development and innovation has presented many success factors for developed products, but has done so in a way that presents the factors as having a nebulous nature, the specification of TP success factors is also presented. The success factors are also empirically validated. The goal of the validation was to determine the relevance of the success factors introduced, and potentially define new ones. The validation was performed through an empirical study with semi-structured company interviews. As a result of this study we concluded that one success factor defined through the literature review should be removed due to a lack of relevance, that the other twelve success factors were validated, and three new success factors were identified during the empirical study. Eventually fifteen TP success factors are defined and presented. The practical relevance of this study is to help firm management to recognise the real actions needed to reduce product development risks. The theoretical relevance is in helping scholars to focus on key issues when studying the key factors of breakthrough development cases
Validointi toteutettiin puolistrukturoiduilla yrityshaastatteluilla. Työn tuloksena esitetään kirjallisuuskatsauksen ja empiirisen validoinnin avulla määritellyt 15 teknologiatyöntöisten projektien menestystekijää. Tutkimuksen käytännöllinen merkitys on auttaa yritysjohtoa tunnistamaan tärkeät toiminnot tuotekehitysriskien madaltamiseksi. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen merkitys on auttaa tutkijoita keskittymään avainasioihin ja tunnistamaan menestystekijät läpimurtotuotetutkimuksessa

Salas, Susan. "Pipeline dreams| Latina/o community college students pushed out of the transfer path." Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3708287.

Full text
Abstract:

Latinas/os represent the largest ethnic group in California and are under-represented in higher education. Latina/o student college completion rates are the lowest of any racial or ethnic group, including Whites. This study used a critical race theoretical lens to explore the experiences of 14 Latina/o community college students who were pushed out of the transfer path. Storytelling served as the foundation of this study to understand and give voice to Latina/o students' transfer path experiences. Interview data from all participants were analyzed to extract codes and develop themes within the stories. Demographic surveys were evaluated to identify student characteristics.

Findings revealed that Latina/o students were pushed out of the transfer path at four critical points: Students were pushed out as they found themselves on academic or progress probation, resulting in conditional financial aid suspensions. Some students became discouraged as they figured out the amount of courses necessary to become transfer ready. Other students attempted to transition to transferable coursework, but they were unable to pass developmental math courses. Students also reported being pushed out as they learned about the immense amount of transfer requirements, program options, and costs, which created transfer information paralysis.

Latina/o students reported feeling emotional relief after being pushed out of the transfer pathway. Earning an associate's degree or certificate was an achievable goal and students felt a sense of academic accomplishment. Students also believed that an associate's degree was a "stepping stone" on their journey through the educational pipeline.

Students noted race, class, and gender stereotyped experiences that adversely affected their transfer path experiences. Negative perceptions about their race impacted their academic performance. Erratic and limited resources-including suspension from financial aid-proved harmful to their ability to remain on the transfer path. Gender role expectations obstructed Latina women and propelled Latino men on the transfer pathway.

The findings suggest that Latina/o students were disadvantaged by community college policies and procedures. Yet, they remained committed to their educational goals. Further investigation of Latina/o student community college experiences is necessary to develop policies, procedures, and practices that will serve to strengthen their educational pathways.

Henneman, Tasha K. "Preschool expulsions| Parental experiences of Black boys who were pushed out or left behind." Thesis, Mills College, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3683724.

Full text
Abstract:

Preschool expulsions have gained new attention in the early child care field. The disproportionate rate of Blacks boys that are expelled or "pushed out" from their child care settings suggests particular concern for exploration. Behavioral problems in early childhood have negative outcomes later in life (Keane & Calkins, 2004); therefore, it is imperative that educational systems create equitable, non-disciplinary practices, which do not marginalize or shame Black boys. This study captured the experiences of five parents of Black boys that were expelled or pushed out of multiple child care settings, as well as the temporary and lasting effects of the expulsions or "push-outs" on the entire family. One center director of a state-funded preschool and one head teacher of a private center also participated. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews, focus groups, and on-line temperament profiles. Grounded theory was used to code the data in terms of the study's conceptual framework, including relationships between parent, child and teacher/provider, Critical Race Theory (CRT), neurobiological considerations, gaps in teacher/provider preparation, and the high-stakes accountability movement. The social construction of Black boys and learning in early child care settings was also explored. Expulsions or push-outs had several negative impacts for parents, the boys of this study and their families. However, through these hardships, parents learned strong advocacy skills and showed resiliency. Implications for providers and policy are discussed.

Bellocq, Pablo. "Multi-disciplinary preliminary design assessments of pusher counter-rotating open rotors for civil aviation." Thesis, Cranfield University, 2012. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/10280.

Full text
Abstract:
As a consequence of fuel cost escalation and increased stringent engine emission regulations, interest in counter-rotating open rotor engines (CRORs) has been renewed. R&D efforts are currently ongoing to develop the technologies required to ensure the appropriate levels of structural integrity, noise, vibrations and reliability. The assessment of the impact of the main low pressure preliminary design and control parameters of CRORs on mission fuel burn, certification noise and emissions is necessary to identify optimum design regions. These assessments aid the development process when compromises need to be performed as a consequence of design, operational or regulatory constraints. These assessments are not possible with the state-of-the-art aero-engine preliminary design simulation tools. Novel 0-D performance models for counter-rotating propellers (CRPs) and differential planetary gearboxes, as well as 1-D and 0-D performance models for counter-rotating turbines (CRTs) were developed and verified using available data. These models were used to create 0-D pusher geared (GOR) and direct drive (DDOR) open rotor engine performance simulation modules allowing the independent definition of the design and operation of each of the two counter-rotating parts of the CRP and CRT. A multi-disciplinary preliminary design simulation framework was built using the novel engine performance modules together with dedicated CROR aircraft performance, engine geometry and weight, gaseous emissions and certification noise simulation modules. Design space exploration and trade-off studies were performed and minimum fuel burn design regions were identified for both the pusher GOR and DDOR. A 160 PAX aircraft flying a business mission of 500 NM was chosen for these studies. Based on the assumptions made, the main conclusions of these studies are as follows. · Fuel burn reductions of ~1-2% are possible through optimised propeller control · The propeller diameter for minimum mission fuel burn lies between 4.26 and 4.7 m · The design nozzle pressure ratio for minimum mission fuel burn lies between 1.55 and 1.6 · CRPs with 13 or 14 blades per propeller provide minimum mission fuel burn · Increasing spacing between the propellers reduces noise significantly (~6 EPNdB for each certification point) with a relatively small fuel burn penalty (~0.3-0.5%) · Relative to unclipped designs, 20% clipped CRPs reduce flyover noise by at least 2.5 EPNdB and approach noise by at least 4.5 EPNdB. The corresponding fuel burn penalty is ~2 % for a GOR and ~3.5% for a DDOR. · Sideline and flyover noise can be reduced by increasing the diameter of the CRP and appropriately controlling CRP rotational speeds. Approach noise can be reduced by either reducing the diameters or the rotational speeds of the propellers. · The rotational speed of the forward propeller for minimum noise is higher than that for minimum mission fuel burn for all the studied CROR designs. · Regardless of clipping, reducing the rotational speed of the rear propeller relative to the forward propeller reduces noise and, to a certain limit, also mission fuel burn. (further reductions in rotational speed would have an adverse effect on fuel burn) · An increase in the number of blades results in an increase in certification noise. The main recommendations for further work are as follows. · Integrating the 1-D CRT model with the 0-D DDOR performance model in order to assess the impact of different CRT design criteria at engine and mission levels · Developing preliminary design methods to account for changes in aircraft weight and aerodynamics due to changes in engine design and required cabin noise treatment.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates the latent potential of the mining belt in Johannesburg through a regenerative theory, by placing a catalytic intervention which respects the heritage of the mining belt, with a focus on the ecology and the socio-economic value of the land has, thereby turning a liability into an asset. This intervention is seen as the first point of acupuncture in a long rehabilitation process and focuses on using this space to deal with context specific issues. The proposed intervention will investigate the potential of architecture to activate a harmed dormant space in the realm of a decentralized city node. It recognizes the potential of the currently fragmented mining belt to become a gateway to the South of Johannesburg, and embraces an opportunity to restitch the urban fabric.

Selby, Moriska V. "Adventure Girlz: A Restorative Leadership Program Model for Interrupting Black Girls’ School Pushout in New York City." Thesis, Harvard University, 2016. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:27013330.

Full text
Abstract:
Young, poor, and undereducated women of color make up the majority of women who are incarcerated in the U.S. correctional system (Covington & Bloom, 2003). Black girls, in particular, are at risk of incarceration when schools leverage policies and practices (e.g. exclusionary discipline) that focus on discipline and control rather than providing a high quality education and support services for Black girls’ development. The restorative leadership program model employs unique methods to engage students and elevate their unique talents and perspectives in a school system that does not “effectively adjust and reform to fit the needs of its entire population” (Dr. Dorian Burton, personal communication, March 26, 2016). The program prioritizes educational attainment for Black girls through physical sports and field trips, critical conversations about what it means to grow up as a Black girl, events to collaborate and build relationships with peer and adult mentors, and workshops to learn personalized goal setting and reflection techniques. A restorative leadership program is an effective tool public middle schools can use to (1) increase the social emotional support provided to Black girls in order to reduce delinquent behavior and (2) reduce the number of Black girls who are pushed out of schools into the juvenile justice system.

Abstract:

In the United States, a staggering four thousand students drop out every school day. Moreover, in 2016, the graduation rate in Oregon was only 74.8%, one of the lowest in the nation. Research shows that a disproportionate number of youth leaving school are from historically marginalized communities. Many of these youth resiliently return to education at alternative schools. This research sought to explore the educational experiences of youth in alternative schools in their own voices and perspectives. From a theoretical framework based in sociocultural theory, cultural capital, and critical theory, this study underscored the importance of youth voice in changing the education system by incorporating qualitative methods and YPAR (Youth Participatory Action Research). Working alongside seven youth co-researchers who attended an alternative school in Oregon, we interviewed eight other students at the same school about their educational experiences and perceptions of the education system. The youth co-researchers and I co-constructed four themes collectively: “I felt invisible to the teachers”; “Teaching is a sacred act”; “Regular high school is like drowning, it’s cruel”; and “Dropping out was [actually] a success.” We also compiled counternarratives in the words of the eight student participants, which highlighted how the school system pushed them out despite their desire to learn. Finally, we spoke truth to power, in solidarity with the youth in this study, by presenting our recommendations for educational change to teachers, including how they can co-create spaces with students that foster care and empathy, value youth voice, and are culturally sustaining and identity affirming.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of the pusher syndrome can affect patients' motor recovery after stroke (CVA). OBJECTIVES: To establish the prevalence of pusher syndrome in patients after stroke from clinical criteria contained in Contraversive Pushing Scale (evaluation of the symptom of pushing), and correlate them with neurological abnormalities, severity of stroke and functionality. METHODS: a cross-sectional study with convenience sample of patients of both sexes with a diagnosis of acute stroke. We included patients with clinically stable and able to assess the severity of the event from the range of NIHSS, Barthel (evaluation of the symptom of pushing). To diagnose the pusher syndrome used two scoring criteria with different cutoff points, pushing the Contraversive scale: result greater than or equal to 1 (criterion I) or greater than zero (criterion II).RESULTS: 86 patients were evaluated. Of these 30 met the inclusion criteria. 17 were men with mean age of 52. 3 years. 26 patients had ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke four. 14 had hemiplegia on the left and 16 right. Mean NIHSS and Barthel index were 8. 5 and 48. 8 points respectively. Using the criteria I and II prevalence rates were 3. 3% and 26. 6% respectively. The presence of pusher syndrome was significantly associated with lower values when the Barthel scale, we used the criterion II (22. 5 ± 8. 5 versus 58. 4 ± 27. 3, P <0. 001). CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of pusher syndrome in patients after acute stroke is significant and can vary according to the criteria used. Its presence is associated with clinical severity and functional dependence, higher incidence in ischemic stroke event, parietal lobe and middle cerebral artery, respectively.

Abstract:
This is a bachelor degree project in Industrial design engineering at Luleå University of Technology. It has been carried out at the request of Nevo Maskin AB, a company that performs service and repairs on heavy construction equipment. The project has been executed in collaboration with Sigma Industry East North in Luleå. The purpose of this project is to improve and simplify the work with a Trackpress. The work process must be made safe, mobile and ergonomic for the user. The Trackpress is a tool that is used for dismantling and replacing the master pin in the link of the caterpillar chain on excavators. The project covers the middle segment of excavators which means excavators between 12 to 45 tons and this is the most common segment of excavators repaired by Nevo Maskin AB. The Trackpress tool used by Nevo Maskin AB consists of three parts: a frame that is placed over the caterpillar chain, a hydraulic cylinder that expands by compressed air and a compressor that controls the compressed air. Supplementary parts are needed between the link and cylinder in order for it to reach the master pin, here they use whatever they have in reach. The exciting Trackpress weighs 86 kgs and cannot be lifted by one sole person, a lifting device must be used. Sometimes two people lifts it but this is not to recommend because of the great risk of injuries. To improve the Trackpress the project has been carried out through a design process with five phases of planning, feasibility study, literature study, ideation and detail development to develop a concept. in one of the phases, Ideation, we have worked with workshops where the members draw, discuss, and write down all the ideas generated. By using different methods and groups of people in the workshops we got different angles and points of view on the problem. Furthermore we have done field trips, user studies, interviews market research and creative methods to develop a concept that was drawn in NX and Inventor. The final concept consists of three parts, a frame constructed by two parallel steel plates with another plate in the rear, a jack for positioning the cylinder, which is placed on top of the jack and between the parallel plates and a additional part for centering the tool over the chain. In the bottom there are two rails that keep the jack in place. A concept for transporting the tool has been left for future development. The concept idea gives the user safer handling of the tool and a more ergonomic way of working with it. The weight and the material consumtion has been reduced. This improvement also reduces de production cost whitch gives the company an advantage against other competitors in the same segment.   Keywords: Industrial design engineering, Master pin pusher, Construction, Product development, Ergonomics, Nevo Maskin AB

Machado, Rodrigo.

Full text
Abstract:
Software systems are not static entities: they usually undergo several changes along their development and maintenance cycles. Software evolution may be required for several reasons, such as the inclusion of new functionalities, the correction of errors or even as part of the system semantics, as it is the case of aspect-oriented systems. However, it is usually not trivial to foresee how structural changes can affect the system behaviour, since system components often interact in very complex ways, and even trivial modifications may introduce new problems. Graph transformation, also known as graph rewriting, has been used throughout the years as an important paradigm for system modelling and analysis. Models based on graph transformation, such as graph grammars, allow an intuitive but formal representation of the system behaviour, allowing the usage of analysis techniques such as model checking and static analysis of rule interaction. The theory behind graph transformation is quite general, and has been studied since the 1970s. However, it still lacks a general notion of higher-order rewriting that would allow a natural definition of model transformations for graph grammars. The lack of general second-order characterization presents difficulties for employing graph grammars as targets of model transformations, and studying how model transformations affect their natural behaviour. In this thesis we address the problem of modelling and analysing systems undergoing programmed modifications in the context of graph grammars. We use the generalization of the double-pushout approach for graph rewriting as a principle for defining simultaneously the system semantics and structural modifications. To achieve this, we introduce a notion of second-order graph rewriting that acts on graph transformation rules. Based on secondorder rewriting we are able to define second-order graph grammars, models equipped with a first-order layer, representing the original system execution, and a second-order layer, representing a model transformation. Using second-order graph grammar we can encode simultaneously model transformations and system execution, allowing us to formally relate them. Moreover, we propose new techniques to investigate the effect of rule modification over their effect on graphs. As an application example, we characterize aspect-oriented constructions for graph grammars, and discuss how to relate the aspect weaving layer with the base system semantics.

Abstract:

Graduating globally conscious citizens, prepared to lead in a global society and serve competently in their communities, is a mission for institutions of higher learning. Short-term study abroad programs with service-learning components have increased in favor toward exposing more students to international engagement, however, few studies explore socially responsible leadership development from these programs and fewer reveal participant perspectives. The purpose of the qualitative case study was to explore and interpret perceptions had by undergraduates and faculty leaders on socially responsible leadership development from participation in the short-term, faculty-led international service-learning component of a capstone course. Utilizing the Social Change Model of Leadership Development to guide the research and organize the findings allowed a thorough exploration of the constructs, identification of experiential learning and transformative learning, along with short-term international service-learning. Findings revealed engagement, reflection, and communication were integral to socially responsible leadership development as well as challenging bias and assumption, change in perspective, trust, skill contribution, global consciousness, and knowledge acquisition. A short-term, faculty-led international service-learning experience embedded within a capstone could develop socially responsible leadership in undergraduates thus influencing their global citizenship. Recommendations for practice include considering the maturity level and learning styles of participants to reduce disengagement and enhance learning and development for all students. Future research could document the longitudinal effect of short-term international service-learning on former participants’ socially responsible leadership.

Abstract:
In recent years, Europe has witnessed a flow of refugees from war struck areas who seek asylum in various European countries, where Sweden is one of the recipient country. A large portion of these refugees comprise of unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs). Aim: The aim of the present study is to examine how unaccompanied refugee minors have the conditions in Malmo when it comes to individual health and lifestyle (tobacco, alcohol and drug use) and social environment (absence of family, living situation, school, social support and future prospects) as compared to the general population of the same age; and also, if these conditions could possibly put them at a risk to encounter or commit a crime. Method: The data is collected using quantitative survey questionnaires distributed to URMs (N=30). The data of the general population has been obtained through Region Skåne. Results: The findings indicate that in comparison to the general population, URMs report high level of ill-health, tobacco use, access to narcotics and low social support, which are termed as risk factors. The institute of school, however, is termed a protective factor for the URMs, where they score almost equivalent to the general population in terms of school satisfaction and better than them in terms of help and support from the teachers. The implication of the findings are discussed further in the paper.

Abstract:
This Grounded Theory study explored the longer-term psychological effects of male perpetrated domestic violence from the perspectives of ten women survivors. On average, they had been away from abuse for eleven years. The findings indicate that in the longer-term, concerns for safety and fear-related responses continued to affect women's lives. Additionally, two distinct theories are depicted. 'Revisiting intimacy' relates to altered perspectives and approaches towards subsequent partnered intimate relationships. 'Re-establishing self-identity' reflects women's changed perceptions of self-identity, and how these issues were addressed over time. The processes described are not linear or sequential. Nevertheless, they suggest an on-going journey, with setbacks alongside breakthroughs, and some possibilities for resolving issues along the way. Being able to address self-blame associated with domestic violence was important. Furthermore, access to support, information and opportunities for selfdevelopment were relevant to improvements. Impediments to progress, such as unsuccessful help-seeking experiences are highlighted and implications for clinical psychology practice are discussed.

Abstract:
In this article intercultural education is discussed, cases from the Danish upper secondary school are analyzed, and some requirements for further development are proposed. First definitions of the concepts communication, communicative action, intercultural communication and intercultural education are given. Starting from these definitions it is argued that intercultural communication as well as intercultural education is possible. Then two cases are analyzed. Finally – in the Discussion – it is underlined that the students’ metareflection on the context dependence of the knowledge construction process is a pivotal precondition for successful intercultural education.

17 were men with mean age of 52.3 years. 26 patients had ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke four. 14 had hemiplegia on the left and 16 right. Mean NIHSS and Barthel index were 8.5 and 48.8 points respectively. Using the criteria I and II prevalence rates were 3.3% and 26.6% respectively. The presence of pusher syndrome was significantly associated with lower values when the Barthel scale, we used the criterion II (22.5 ? 8.5 versus 58.4 ? 27.3, P <0.001).
Abstract:
Further Education (FE) colleges have been able to offer ‘direct entry’ to 14 to 16-year-old pupils since 2013, following the recommendations of the Wolf Report (2011). Currently, there are 17 FE colleges in the England offering this type of Alternative Provision (AP). Research focused on pupil transition into APs does exist, though most of this focuses on Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) or school-selected FE provision. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted which showed a ‘gap’ in the research concerning 14 to 16 college provision in England. The aim of this research is to attempt to address this gap to a degree, and to gain an understanding of the experiences of young people who chose to make a ‘non-traditional’ transition into a 14 to 16 college. Classic grounded theory was selected as the methodology for this research (Glaser, 1978; Holton and Walsh, 2017). The aim of this research was to develop a substantive grounded theory of the experiences of participants ‘pushed out’ of mainstream who chose to transition to a 14 to 16 college. Qualitative data was collected initially through a focus group and five semi-structured interviews with purposively recruited target participants. The constant comparison method of grounded theory guided data collection and analysis. Theoretical sampling took place once a conceptual core category had emerged, resulting in data collection from four additional participants and re-interviewing an original participant. The main theoretical concepts emerging from the grounded theory methodology were: disempowerment and disengagement, agency through self-determination and re-empowerment. These theoretical concepts were linked within a theoretical framework drawing on transition models of self-determination theory (Ryan and Deci, 2000; Pierson et al, 2008) and bioecological systems (Trainor et al, 2008). The concepts of bounded agency (Evans, 2007) and ‘critical moments’ (Thomson et al, 2002) have been applied to explain how ‘pushed out’ participants were able to choose to make a ‘non-traditional’ transition to a 14 to 16 college. Implications for Educational Psychology practice have been discussed as well as areas for future research.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to evaluate four techniques for insertion of resin cement on retention of glass fiber posts to root dentin in different root thirds, as well as these different nanoleakage in adhesive interface. The roots of the fifty-two human extracted pre-molars were endodontically treated and standardized preparation of the canals. It were divided into four groups according to the technique of insertion of the cement: GC - Centrix ® syringe with fine tip, GL - # 35 drill Lentulo, GP - cement applied directly to the post and GI - syringe for insulin delivery. The posts (White Post DC - FGM) had their surfaces treated in accordance with the manufacturer and were cemented according to each technique. After storage in water at 37° C for one week, each group of ten roots were sectioned transversely into six discs with 1 mm thick each, and coronal thirds (CT), medium (TM) and apical (TA) of root canal were identified. The push-out test was conducted at a speed of 0.5 mm / min. To evaluate the nanoleakage in the adhesive interface, three roots of each group, ie, 6 slices per root were submitted to immersion in 50% silver nitrate for subsequent obtaining of images made using scanning electron microscopy. Images were analyzed using appropriate software to obtain the mean nanoleakage values converted into percentage. The data were subjected to statistical analysis by ANOVA (one factor) and Tukey post-test (0.5%), showed that GC had the best values for bond strength (MPa) and nanoleakage (%):18,57 ± 4,19 e 37,70 ± 18,95 repectively and GP had the worst values: 13,71 ± 1,61 e 65,11 ± 13,58 respectively. The insertion technique of resin cement influenced on the bond strength values and on the nanoleakage found in the study.

Abstract:
This research presents a study of influence of bond on concrete-filled steel tubes by means of a bibliography review and an experimental investigation. The bond strength counts on three mechanisms: adhesion of the concrete to the steel surface, friction and wedging of the concrete core. In order to improve the shear resistance of the steel-concrete interface, shear connectors can be used. A series of push-out tests of rectangular concrete-filled steel tubes was conducted in the specimens without mechanical shear connectors, specimens with stud bolt shear connectors and specimens with angles. They were also tested the corresponding beam-column connections. The results are shown in curves force x slip of concrete, force x axial strain of materials and distribution of axial load to the steel and to the concrete. The results of the tests permitted identify the mechanisms of natural bond and indicated that the stud bolts and the angles are excellent alternatives as auxiliary mechanisms to transfer shear between the concrete and steel in the concrete filled composite column. However, it is necessary to guarantee the connection enough strength in order to permit these resistance be developed

Abstract:
Scholars for decades have studied the achievement gap and attempted to explain it in regards to race and class. Throughout the existing literature regarding the achievement gap between black and white students, however, there is a dearth of research exploring why the gap exists for upper-class black students; this population is largely ignored. This research seeks to explain why an achievement gap exists between white and black students who come from households of similar incomes. Ten students (five white and five black gradates) of a private, non-parochial school in Washington DC are interviewed about high school and post-high school experiences. Using cultural capital and labeling theory frameworks, this study follows the work of Billings (2011), Pattillo-McCoy (2000), Lacy (2007), and Khan (2011) in their focus on black students, cultural capital, and embodied privilege, and builds on that of Lensmire (2012), Dixon-Roman 2014, Orr (2003) Adams (2010) and Tyson et al. (2005). Results uncover the uniquely complex configuration of class and race. Latent issues as a result of race can arise, and the research illustrates how they affect the achievement ideology and attainment of both black and white students. This study’s findings suggest that two mechanisms shape the achievement gap: academic support and social interactions and interpretations, with the former rooted largely in class differences and the latter rooted in racial differences. This study aims to improve our understanding of the distinct role race and class play in influencing educational and professional outcomes from upper-class backgrounds.

Harish, J. "Computational Modelling Of Heat Transfer In Reheat Furnaces." Thesis, Indian Institute of Science, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2005/234.

Full text
Abstract:
Furnaces that heat metal parts (blooms) prior to hot-working processes such as rolling or forging are called pre-forming reheat furnaces. In these furnaces, the fundamental idea is to heat the blooms to a prescribed temperature without very large temperature gradients in them. This is to ensure correct performance of the metal parts subsequent to reheating. Due to the elevated temperature in the furnace chamber, radiation is the dominant mode of heat transfer from the furnace to the bloom. In addition, there is convection heat transfer from the hot gases to the bloom. The heat transfer within the bloom is by conduction. In order to design a new furnace or to improve the performance of existing ones, the heat transfer analysis has to be done accurately. Given the complex geometry and large number of parameters encountered in the furnace, an analytical solution is difficult, and hence numerical modeling has to be resorted to. In the present work, a numerical technique for modelling the steady-state and transient heat transfer in a reheat furnace is developed. The work mainly involves the development of a radiation heat transfer analysis code for a reheat furnace, since a major part of the heat transfer in the furnace chamber is due to radiation from the roof and combustion gases. The code is modified from an existing finite volume method (FVM) based radiation heat transfer solver, The existing solver is a general purpose radiation heat transfer solver for enclosures and incorporates the following features: surface-to-surface radiation, gray absorbing-emitting medium in the enclosure, multiple reflections off the bounding walls, shadowing effects due to obstructions in the enclosure, diffuse reflection and enclosures with irregular geometry. As a part of the present work, it has now been extended to include the following features that characterise radiation heat transfer in the furnace chamber · Combination of specular and diffuse reflection as is the case with most real surfaces · Participating non-gray media, as the combustion gases in the furnace chamber exhibit highly spectral radiative characteristics Transient 2D conduction heat transfer within the metal part is then modelled using a FVM-based code. Radiation heat flux from the radiation model and convection heat flux calculated using existing correlations act as boundary conditions for the conduction model. A global iteration involving the radiation model and the conduction model is carried out for the overall solution. For the study, two types of reheat furnaces were chosen; the pusher-type furnace and the walking beam furnace. The difference in the heating process of the two furnaces implies that they have to be modelled differently. In the pusher-type furnace, the heating of the blooms is only from the hot roof and the gas. In the walking beam furnace, the heating is also from the hearth and the blooms adjacent to any given bloom. The model can predict the bloom residence time for any particular combination of furnace conditions and load dimensions. The effects of variations of emissivities of the load, thickness of the load and the residence time of billet in the furnaces were studied.

Abstract:
The present work deal with analysis of propulsion and maneuvering systems for pusher-barge system, and results on the maneuverability of convoys. It analyzes the conventional propulsion system (rudder plus propeller), the azimuth system and combined auxiliary equipment bow with each of these propulsion systems. Presents the mathematical modeling of propulsion and maneuvering systems mentioned, which served as the basis for implementation of a computational simulator used to obtain the results of this dissertation. The hydrodynamic forces and moments are obtained by the method of hydrodynamic derivatives for simulations about service speed, while for simulations at low speed used a semi - empirical method based on the principle of cross-flow. Initially, performed the validation of the simulation results with the literature for the case of pusher-barge system with conventional propulsion. Then the model was adapted to other types of propulsion and maneuvering systems proposed. The results show that there is a greater efficiency of azimuth propulsion system and equipment in the bow to maneuver at low speeds, which makes it suitable for application in river transport, because these vessels navigate slower speeds compared to other types of vessels.

Abstract:
The verification and validation of software components for real-time systems is a major challenge for the development of automated systems. The models of such systems must be verified and the conformance of their implementation w.r.t their model must be validated. Our framework is that of real-time recursive systems modelled by timed pushdown automata with deadlines (TPAIO). The deadlines impose time progress conditions. The objective of this thesis is to propose test generation methods from TPAIO.Our contributions are as follows. Firstly, a conformance relation for TPAIO is introduced. Secondly, a polynomial method of test generation from a deterministic TPAIO with only lazy deadlines is defined. It consists of defining a polynomial algorithm that computes a partial reachability timed automaton by removing the stack constraints. This method is incomplete. The incompleteness is not a problem because software testing is an incomplete activity by nature. Thirdly, we define a method for generating test cases from a deterministic TPAIO with only outputs and delayable deadlines. It applies to the abstractions of timed recursive programs. It consists of generating test cases by computing an over-approximated tester. Finally, we propose a generalization of the test generation process from a non deterministic TPAIO with any deadlines. Its ability to detect non conform implementation is assessed by a mutation technique

Movement of convoy/pushed convoy is its ability to change place due to certainforce that drives it. This force is created by ship’s propellers for given speed v=constand it should be equal to resistance of surrounding water and air. This is the reasonwhy useful force created by ships propellers (thrust) created by propellers of pushboatwhile navigating with a convoy at v=const needs to overcome not only theresistance of barges but push-boat’s resistance as well. For planers of transportprocess it is necessary to know, besides the resistance of surroundings duringnavigation of pushed convoys, the value of reduced and specific resistance for certaintypes of barges and convoys that they form. Apart from that methods for calculationof expected speeds of navigation, value of static load of engines based onexperimental research. Besides that new exploitation parameters for determination ofpush-boat’s work are proposed, which haven’t been used in Serbia. At the enddissertation presents methods to solve practical transportation tasks for differentships with different convoys.

Abstract:
The present study consisted of a phenomenological investigation of African American males who have been expelled from traditional educational settings in New Orleans, LA in order to provide educators with information geared towards increasing academic achievement in African American males. It has been noted that one of the reasons that Black males graduation rates are so low is because in addition to other factors that lead to non-completion, black males are more likely to be expelled from school. In this study, I used a Critical Race theoretical framework to explore gain experiential knowledge of these excluded young men, what they perceive as barriers to their success, and their sentiments on the relationships they have had with educators and peers whom they have encountered. Based on the participants’ responses, seven categories emerged from the data including: (a) Race and Racism, (b) Self Perceptions, (c) Family Expectations and Support, (d) Male Role Models and Mentors, (e) The School Environment, (f) School Discipline, and (g) Alternative School. Study participants described the totality of their education experiences by opening up about what they felt were key factors at play. The stories of the participants provided a deeper context of the nuances of racism and how it impacts their day to day educational experiences overall The results of this study provides data that may enable educators to begin steps to dismantle the school to prison pipeline by ensuring at-risk students are supported and successful in school without having to be removed. This information serves as a catalyst for future inquiry into additional nuances that effect the academic achievement of African American male students in K-12 schools.
