Abstract:
When an object on a horizontal surface is pushed hard enough to overcome the friction between the object and the surface, the object moves. It was proved by interpreting Kuhn-Tucker’s optimality condition that when a pusher moves an object, the motion and the friction force of the pushed object corresponding to the pusher motion are those that maximize the power dissipated to friction under Coulomb’s friction law. This is different from the principles of maximum and minimum dissipation postulated in the past in that it involves the pusher motion too whereas the principles do not. It allows us to treat the prediction of the motion and the friction force of a pushed object as an optimization problem. Since this optimization can be performed with linear programming within any desired accuracy, it offers us a simple, robust, and fast method to predict the motion and the friction force of a pushed object. The method was verified with an experiment of pushing a wooden block. It was applied to the estimation of the necessary clamping force infixturing for machining.

Abstract:
The active control of rotordynamic vibrations and stability by magnetic bearings and electromagnetic shakers has been discussed extensively in the literature. These devices, though effective, are usually large in volume and add significant weight to the stator. The use of piezoelectric pushers may provide similar degrees of effectiveness in light, compact packages. This paper contains analyses which extend quadratic regulator and derivative feedback control methods to the “prescribed displacement” character of piezoelectric pushers. The structrual stiffness of the pusher is also included in the theory. Tests are currently being conducted at NASA Lewis Research Center with piezoelectric pusher-based active vibration control. The paper presents results performed on the NASA test rig as preliminary verification of the related theory.

Abstract:
This paper presents a novel piezoelectric actuator containing double pushers. By using finite element analysis software, this study simulated the vibration mode and amplitude of piezoelectric actuators. The Taguchi method was used to design the parameters of piezoelectric actuators including length, width, height, and electrodes setting. This paper also presents a discussion regarding the influence that the design parameters had on the actuator amplitudes. Based on optimal design parameters, a novel piezoelectric actuator containing double pushers is produced and some thrust tests are also carried out. From the experiment results, the piezoelectric actuator containing double pushers can provide a greater thrust force than that of traditional actuators containing a single pusher as the preload is greater. Comparing with the traditional actuators, the thrust force of new actuator can be increased by 48% with the double preload.

Abstract:
Research: The goal of this study is to understand the experiences of Black and Latino former high school students who dropped out, or were pushed out, of a large urban school district in Southern California. Specifically, this paper examines the barriers students faced that contributed to them leaving high school and their journey afterward. Thirty-nine former high school students who “dropped out”, or were pushed out of school, 61.5% males (n = 24) and 38.5% females (n = 15), were interviewed. Findings: The findings indicate the use of punitive truancy control for dealing with health and psychological needs of students, transportation issues, personnel–student relationships, and standardized testing. Examining the experiences of students who have been pushed out of school can help educators and policy makers address some of the inequities within schools. Results: We argue that pushout prevention can be developed by changing truancy and other discipline policies in schools. Implications from this study help us understand how we can better support students before they are pushed out.

Abstract:
This work describes a practical and theoretical investigation of aerodynamic characteristics of a 1:6,5 scale model of a light twin-engined Piper Seneca III aircraft. Basically, two configurations are considered in this evaluation: clean wing and pusher nacelle. The principal objective is to evaluate the aerodynamic characteristics of the pusher configuration in three different positions, in order to obtain practical and theoretical data with reference to static pressure distribution on the surface of the aerofoil and of the nacelle in a power-off condition. The methodology employed used low speed wind tunnel test for the acquisition of experimental data for a selection of angles of attach, as cited. The generation of numerical data, to be compared the experimental equivalent, is though the use of a low order panel method. The experimental and theoretical results show that the presence of pusher nacelle in the positions mentioned generated interference, reducing the local lift of the aerofoil.

Walker, Greg Delany. "Embracing failure: the life between polite and pushed." Thesis, University of Iowa, 2018. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6329.

Abstract:
My name is Greg Delany Walker. I’m an MFA candidate in Theatre Arts with a specialization in Acting at the University of Iowa. The following is my thesis that addresses my artistic process as an actor. My main focus in this thesis is to unpack my beliefs about what makes good acting and how I personally achieve that. I detail many schools of thought that pair well together to seek out vulnerability in actors. Vulnerability is my chief struggle as an actor given that I have a tendency to overthink things and rely more on intellect than on passionate expression in my daily life and in my work. That tendency leads me to be polite as an actor, which has gotten in the way of my being able to reach my full potential. I discovered time and time again how important it is to understand and embody acting techniques so deeply that I can let them go. All the different techniques of analysis, physical and voice work are essential, but they need to transition to being second nature. The techniques outlined in this thesis, learned in my life and through the program at the University of Iowa, have to be so ingrained that I don’t need to think of them in the moment on stage. The key to being present on stage seems so simple in a way, but it has been a great challenge for me to fully let go of control to allow for my potential public failure and humiliation. The times that I’ve embraced failure have been the strongest moments for me as an actor because of the power of risk. My hope is that by detailing my own process and experiences, with that idea of building technique and releasing into the present moment, that others could be further empowered to do the same in acting or in life.

Abstract:
Newspapers are often bundled and packet on pallets to secure transport. Packing thebundles on pallets are often done with an automatic palletizer. For reliable operation, the bundle needed to have a correct position and orientation on the infeed conveyor.Wrong orientation can happen when the bundle is pushed from conveyor to thepalletisers conveyor. The main to reasons is wrong timing that leads to rotation of thebundle and to high pushing force that leads to tumbled bundles. The goal of thisproject is to make a prototype of a system that automatically adapts the pressure andsignal when to push using two laser sensors. One sensor sends a digital signal if laserbreaks, the other measure distance, e.g. bundle hight. The software was developed onan Arduino Uno board, and two interface board was made for voltage levelconversions. The prototype system managed to change pressure for different bundlesizes and timed the pushing signal correctly.

Sarja, J. (Jari). "Developing technology pushed breakthroughs:defining and assessing success factors in ICT industry." Doctoral thesis, Oulun yliopisto, 2016. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789526214474.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The main task for most development-intensive organisations is to create, develop and commercialise new products and services. The technology push (TP) concept is considered an important competitive advantage for companies trying to create breakthrough products. Because development processes are risky and failure rates are high, especially in the case of technology pushed projects, defined success factors are valuable knowledge for the management of development-intensive firms. The prime objective of this study is to present a compact set of TP project success factors in an information and communication technology (ICT) context. Because the literature on new product development and innovation has presented many success factors for developed products, but has done so in a way that presents the factors as having a nebulous nature, the specification of TP success factors is also presented. The success factors are also empirically validated. The goal of the validation was to determine the relevance of the success factors introduced, and potentially define new ones. The validation was performed through an empirical study with semi-structured company interviews. As a result of this study we concluded that one success factor defined through the literature review should be removed due to a lack of relevance, that the other twelve success factors were validated, and three new success factors were identified during the empirical study. Eventually fifteen TP success factors are defined and presented. The practical relevance of this study is to help firm management to recognise the real actions needed to reduce product development risks. The theoretical relevance is in helping scholars to focus on key issues when studying the key factors of breakthrough development cases
Validointi toteutettiin puolistrukturoiduilla yrityshaastatteluilla. Työn tuloksena esitetään kirjallisuuskatsauksen ja empiirisen validoinnin avulla määritellyt 15 teknologiatyöntöisten projektien menestystekijää. Tutkimuksen käytännöllinen merkitys on auttaa yritysjohtoa tunnistamaan tärkeät toiminnot tuotekehitysriskien madaltamiseksi. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen merkitys on auttaa tutkijoita keskittymään avainasioihin ja tunnistamaan menestystekijät läpimurtotuotetutkimuksessa

Abstract:
Pusher-barge system with different maneuvering and propulsion devices were modeled and analyzed. Both azimuth thrusters and conventional propulsion system (which is composed by rudder and propeller) were considered in the pusher. An additional azimuth thruster installed on the bow of the barges was also analyzed, in order to increase the maneuverability of the convoy. Hydrodynamic derivatives for different pusher-barge configurations used in Tietê-Paraná river (B × L = 2 × 3, 1 × 2 and 1 × 1) were obtained from previously published works and complemented by captive model tests and CFD calculation executed in the context of the present project, presented in a complementary paper in this conference Grassi et al. (2013). Numerical models for each propulsion and maneuvering devices were obtained by standard formulations. A time-domain simulator was then implemented and the standard zig-zag and turning circle tests were simulated to compare performance of the different maneuvering and propulsion devices. It was verified that pushers equipped with azimuth thrusters can increase the maneuverability of the system for slow speed navigation. For higher speeds, the conventional rudder and propeller pusher presents similar or even better maneuvering properties, since the effectiveness of the rudder increases. The additional bow azimuth thruster can also improve maneuverability parameters, since the force applied at the bow increases the turning moment. However, its efficiency depends also on the speed and the instantaneous pivot-point of pusher-barge system. A broad discussion about the advantages and physical limitations of this additional bow azimuth thruster is presented.

Abstract:
This research is motivated by early experiments [1, 2], in which the main time consistent flow structures in the wake of a flexible oscillating circular cylinder were studied. We have now investigated the wake of a circular cylinder undergoing forced vibrations, by using Planar Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) and long exposure photographs for flow visualisation. The focus is given to the node to anti-node transition when the cylinder oscillates in its second structural mode. A flexible cylinder is supported by a structure consisting of a frame that includes a motor that drives a shaft, that actuates a pusher connected to the cylinder at two points, through a crank slider mechanism. We are able to produce forced oscillations of the cylinder, either in its first mode when the pushers are in phase, or in its second mode if the pushers are configured out-of-phase. We have used a high speed camera together with a continuous wave laser, to image seeding particles being illuminated by the laser sheet, at two different heights along the length of the cylinder: the node and the anti-node. We have also produced long exposure images of the particles leading to flow visualisation.
