Abstract:
En el presente artículo quisiéramos proponer la filiación originariamente puquina del nombre <inca>, cuya “biografía” fue retocada sucesivamente por el aimara, el quechua y el castellano, con una serie de ajustes y reajustes formales y semánticos, como resultado de reacomodos idiomáticos sufridos tanto espontánea como deliberadamente. En función de ello, y luego de ofrecer algunos antecedentes sobre el tema, nuestra discusión está organizada en dos grandes secciones: en la primera ofreceremos la etimología del término en forma y significado, postulando su filiación prístina puquina; en la segunda, someteremos a examen y discusión minuciosa la tesis recientemente postulada por César Itier (2019), consistente en atribuirle al término un origen quechua. Demostraremos que la propuesta ofrecida por el colega carece de sustento lingüístico y filológico, constituyendo una prueba de cómo la adhesión a la tesis del “quechuismo primitivo” (Cerrón-Palomino 2019) puede conducir a conclusiones realmente insostenibles no solo desde el punto de vista puramente lingüístico, sino, también, y de modo más dramático, en sus proyecciones interpretativas respecto de las instituciones sociopolíticas y organizativas del incario.

Abstract:
In this paper an attempt will be made to offer a partial history of the three major languages of ancient Peru: Puquina, Aimara and Quechua, postulating their initial settlement from which they started spreading, until their encounter in the Central-Southern Andes during the Late Intermediate Period. It is proposed that the Incas passed through two stages of language substitution: the first from Puquina to Aimara and then from Aimara to Quechua. Linguistic, historical and archaeological evidence will be advanced to support the hypothesis.
En la presente contribución intentaremos bosquejar una parte de la historia de las tres lenguas mayores del antiguo Perú: el puquina, el aimara y el quechua, proponiendo los emplazamientos iniciales a partir de los cuales se expandieron hasta confluir en los Andes centro-sureños durante el Periodo Intermedio Tardío. Proponemos que los incas, a lo largo de su dominación, pasaron por dos etapas de mudanza idiomática: primeramente del puquina al aimara y, luego, del aimara al quechua. En apoyo de las hipótesis planteadas echamos mano de las evidencias de carácter lingüístico, histórico y arqueológico disponibles.

Abstract:
Sixteenth- and seventeenth-century chroniclers call attention to the Incas having had a ‘particular language’, used exclusively by members of the court. The sparse linguistic material attributed to it consists of barely a dozen proper names which ‘El Inca’ Garcilaso de la Vega, unable to explain through his Quechua mother tongue, assumed must belong to the purported secret language. On closer inspection most of these words do turn out to be explicable in terms of either a Quechua or an Aymara origin. Nevertheless, a small amount of extant onomastic material — mostly Inca institutional names — cannot be traced back to either, and points to a third language instead. This chapter makes the case that this could have been Puquina, once a major language of the Titicaca Basin, whence the mythical Incas set out on their journey to Cuzco. Linguistic, mythohistorical, and archaeological evidence are offered support of this hypothesis.

Abstract:
This chapter explores broad social changes that may account for how Quechua and Aymara entered the Lake Titicaca and Cuzco regions so that they eventually replaced all other native languages. It starts with a brief overview of the topography and ecology of the area that provides the landscape upon which people developed their subsistence base and over which they moved. It then reviews what is known about the distribution of Aymara, Quechua, and Puquina in the region at the start of the colonial period. Based on this, the chapter presents a broad overview of the archaeological evidence for social development and change from the Formative to the early colonial period, in order to consider the social processes that led to the pattern of language use encountered by the Spanish. It is argued that the scale of social change wrought by the Wari Empire in the Vilcanota Valley is commensurate with the introduction and uptake of a new language, which is most likely to have been Quechua. But documentary evidence suggests the llama herders of the Lupaca, Canas, and Collagua were well-established Aymara speakers by the time of the earliest Spanish records. The social processes surrounding llama herding must be considered to account for the spread of Aymara into the Titicaca Basin.
