Abstract:

Abstract:
The Yuruma Formation in the Yuruma hill area its type locality can be differentiated into two stratigraphic intervals. The lower and upper intervals of the Yuruma Formation can also be subdivided into two segments. The lithological, sedimentological and fossiliferous characteristics support this differentiation, which allows to interpret the accumulation energy influences over the sea floor. The lower interval is characterized by intercalations of very fossiliferous marlstones and biomicrites with benthonic and nektonic fossils from the lower Barremian. The upper interval is represented by marlstones and biomicrites with poor benthonic and nektonic fossils from the upper Barremian and probably from the lower Aptian. In the Punta Espada area, whit scarce lithological controls over the lower and upper parts of the Yuruma Formation, were found biomicrites with benthonic and nektonic fossils of the lower Barremian to the lower part, and to the top were recognized biomicrites that underlie beds with lower Aptian ammonites.

Macphail, C. "Compositional characterisation of skarn garnet in the Pernatty Lagoon region, and comparisons with Punt Hill and Hillside." Thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2440/128258.

Full text
Abstract:
This item is only available electronically.
The Pernatty Lagoon Region is located on the eastern margin of the Gawler Craton, within the Stuart Shelf of South Australia. The Gawler Craton is host to a range of sub-economic garnet skarn systems: within Pernatty Lagoon is the PLR21/SAR8 drill hole which is characterised by heavy skarn-style alteration with a uniform mineralisation halo (Cu–Pb–Zn). Punt Hill and Hillside both reside within the Wallaroo Group lithological package of the Gawler Craton and are approximately 6km east and 380km south of Pernatty Lagoon, respectively, allowing for a proximal/distal comparison to be drawn. Laser–ablation inductively–coupled plasma mass spectrometry spot analyses and grain scale element distribution mapping determines the concentrations of rare earth elements/incompatibles and their distribution at grain scale. Garnets from SAR8 fall into the grandite range from And99–85Gr0–13Sp1–2 to And74–56Gr23–41Sp1–2. Laser–ablation inductively–coupled plasma mass spectrometry spot analyses and grain scale element distribution mapping show that Gawler Craton garnet skarns are unique for skarn garnet deposits as they are high in ΣREE+Y and U, have similar garnet compositions, a unique REE+Y distribution (cores enriched in light rare earth elements (LREE), flat heavy rare earth elements (HREE) and rims with similar LREE to HREE (only severely depleted in lanthanum and cerium), and an enrichment in W, Sn, As and Cr. YAG–style REE+Y fractionation only partly accounts for the distribution of REE+Y patterns. Xsite ionic radii substitution accounts for the unusual LILE fractionation, with Cl– and F–complexes being a major suppository of La3+ within hydrothermal fluids. The suggested potential for W, Sn, As and Cr enrichment as a vector for mineralisation and fluid flow is rendered inconclusive: instead the enrichment is due to host rock compositions associated with the fluid pathways.

Abstract:
The U.S. Supreme Court: A Very Short Introduction draws on the Court’s history and its written and unwritten rules to show how it operates in the early twenty-first century. Today’s Supreme Court, housed in a majestic building on Capitol Hill, bears little resemblance to the institution launched by the Framers of the Constitution and was originally seen as the weakest of the three branches of government. Over the next 200 years, the Court put the independence the Framers gave it to use and now largely defines itself. How do cases reach the Supreme Court? What features have other courts around the world taken from the Supreme Court, and what have they left?

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractLandslide disasters in Bangladesh’s Chittagong hill districts (CHD) put lives, livelihood, and the ecosystem at risk. Therefore, understanding the causes of landslide events in CHD is crucial to preparing and implementing disaster risk reduction (DRR) strategies. The causes of landslides are generally seen through the lenses of physical science. However, to better understand the landslide disaster mechanism, it is essential to explore the human activities that trigger and aggravate the events. This article uses qualitative social science tools and techniques to investigate CHD’s anthropogenic-induced landslide disasters. Forty key informants from diverse professions, ethnicities, communities, and backgrounds were interviewed between 9 June and 3 November 2020. The recorded interviews were translated, transcribed, and thematically analysed in NVivo software. The results show that human-induced landslides in CHD evolve around three broader areas: demography, climate change, and lack of coordination and regulation. First, increased population, hill cutting, deforestation, manipulated agricultural practices, and sand and stone extraction is the leading anthropogenic activities of landslides in CHD. Second, the influx of Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh significantly increased landslide vulnerability. Third, climate change-induced erratic rainfall is leading to more rainfall-induced landslides. Finally, a lack of coordination and regulations among various institutions hinders the DRR process. The short, medium- and long-term recommendations include stopping illegal hill cutting and deforestation, regulating heavy vehicles, increasing coordination, institutionalising early warning systems, conducting massive awareness campaigns, conducting further research, addressing challenges such as lightning, climate migration and conflict, and creating a master plan exclusive for the entire region and coming up with a political consensus for better implementation of the plan.

The goal of this article is to compare two inter-state commercial charters as the title suggests, a chrysobull by the Byzantine emperor John VIII and a document signed by Mehmed the Conqueror. The Ottoman Empire at that time was expanding at the expense of the Venetian thalassocracy, and particularly Byzantium. Venice, in its turn, was deriving more trade privileges from the dying Byzantine Empire. The emphasis in the article will be put on the similarities between the documents proving the continuity in the various spheres of international politics in the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period.

Abstract:
“A crowd of solemn-faced African villagers sat on the stone benches around the whitewashed walls of the court, squatted on the concrete floor and stood four deep outside.” In early May, the magistrate holds a preliminary inquiry (PI) in Maswa. After a three-day hearing, the magistrate orders Bill to be held for trial in the High Court in Mwanza because the prosecution has presented a prima facie case. Several eyewitnesses are called to testify about the events on Impala Hill on March 27, 1966. Although the prosecution presents its entire case, the defense offers none of its evidence because under Tanzanian law it can be reserved for later. A strategic decision is made based on the assumption that the prosecution has adequate evidence to lead the magistrate to order Bill to trial; in this way, the prosecution will be unprepared and surprised by evidence put forward at the trial.

The chapter examines the various facets of the Wonder Port project and its consequence for local residents. It studies more specifically the key role played by art in the production of conflicting and sometimes contradictory spatial imaginaries. The chapter shows the tensions between Rio Art Museum’s architecture and exhibits and community-based social and cultural projects such as Morrinho (Little Hill) and the Inside Out Morro da Providência project. It illustrates how top-down market-oriented social policies of displacement of long-time residents are put into question by favela-based cultural producers.

Full text
Abstract:
The Francis Hydro Turbine Performance is normally presented in the form of Hill Curves with Unit Head, Unit Flow and Unit Power etc. The Hill Curves give hydraulic performance at variety of flow, head and speed. The cavitation performance of the turbine is marked by curves additionally put on the Hill Curves. Though the turbine could be operated over the entire range specified on the Hill Curves, the site reports have indicated that the operation of turbine is restricted to what is called safe operating zone on Hill Curves. Beyond this region the machine is expected to operate under cavitation, the cavitation occurring at different location on blade, depending on which zone of Hill Curve Diagram the machine is operating. A model test data was available in the form of Hill Curves indicating safe zone of operation. Efforts were made to capture the safe operating zone for this Francis Turbine using numerical approach. A well validated commercial software was used to capture cavitation occurring. The paper describes the approach used and presents results in the form of cavitation, occurring or not occurring, by choosing two operating zones on either side of the safe operating area. The results were highly encouraging. The safe operating zone was clearly identified. The paper also presents results in the form of overall performance and volume fraction distribution etc in both the zones. The paper describes the approach used in numerical experiments and the results thereof.

Abstract:
Preliminary study of the Hill of the Castle of Montefrío (Granada)The castle of Montefrío (Granada) was one of the fortresses that formed the last line of defense of the Nasrid kingdom. After its surrender, in 1486, the castle served as a Castilian border stronghold until the fall of the Nasrid capital, Granada, six years later, which put an end to the Christian conquest of al-Andalus. This work tries to analyze the evolution of the hill were the castle is, from the implantation of the Nasrid fortress to the present day, through the continuous transformations from a citadel, a military fortress, a church and, today, a centre of interpretation. This place is a territorial and landscape landmark that has shaped the environment of Montefrío and has been a key piece in its history and in its urban development. The study focuses on the analysis of the evolution of the constructive techniques developed by the Nasrid and the Castilian for the defense of this stronghold, through the archaeological remains preserved in the site. The preliminary study of this castle is a starting point for a deeper investigation that will be extended to other fortresses in the mountainous region between Córdoba and Granada. The study of the castle of Montefrío is therefore a methodological approach that will serve as the basis for a more extensive territorial research.

Abstract:
In forestry and agriculture industry, robust and power-dense hydraulics have long played an important role for a rational and cost-effective logistics. In these fields there is a trend towards longer, larger and heavier vehicles and machines. Within the forestry business there is a need to develop transport vehicles with lower energy consumption. This can be done by improving the vehicles' aerodynamics. The air resistance of unloaded timber trucks and timber trains will be significantly reduced if stakes and banks are put together. Furthermore, there is a need to place banks and stakes at individual distances individually to accomplish different load combinations. In agriculture when sowing, it is an advantage to be able to flexibly position row units on a seed drill in optimal distances from each other to secure productive and sustainable farming. However, most present seed drills have fixed row distances and thus have a low adaptability for different crops or soil conditions. There is also a need for a faster transport of the seed drill between different fields. Future actuation systems for forestry and agricultural vehicles and machines can be improved by utilizing a new sort of hydraulic linear actuator technology, the Hydraulic Infinite Linear Actuator (HILA). HILA technology also has an impact on heavy and dangerous manual steps when changing banks and stakes on timber vehicles. The adjustment can be controlled from the cabin, thus eliminating manual steps. Heavy bank elements on a timber vehicle can be positioned individually with high locking force. In the agricultural context, it is possible to quickly change between different inter-row spacing on a seed drill when using HILA technology, enabling a multi-purpose seed drill and inter-row cultivator. HILA long stroke capability also facilitates a smooth folding into a compact transport position. With the bills are gathered, a low center of gravity will be accomplished. This enables a more stable vehicle dynamics and enables a higher speed. HILA is based on a well-known hydraulic clamping element technology, where the piston and the piston rod can be coupled and uncoupled by means of the clamping element. The HILA invention, in its simplest usage, provides new features to hydraulic cylinders, such as providing very long strokes and small chamber volumes, which means high stiffness and low capacitance. However, the invention also enables lower weight and volume of the actuator when compared to conventional hydraulic cylinders. This is a new way to generate and distribute mechanical linear movement and force by using hydraulic actuators in a cost effective way. The technology also represents a new sort of digital hydraulics. The technology is best suited for relatively slow dynamics and where the movement pattern is well-known.

Bairén Castle (Gandía, Spain). Graphic documentation projectBairén Castle was built in the Almoravid period, carring out the function of border hisn of the Taifa of Dénia. It was the administrative, political and legal-religious center of more than 20 farmhouses or qurà and castles. At present is possible visit the castle, although only part of its walls and remains of ruins scattered throughout the hill remain. The abandonment that has been suffering during these last years, together with the uncontrolled growth of the vegetation, make necessary to carry out urgent actions to conserve and put it in value. Within the framework of the study carried out in the initial phase of the Project for the authorization of the archaeological park of the castle of Bairén1, we have been developing an important work of graphic documentation, which will serve both to demonstrate the current state of the castle, as well as for the archaeological and restoration works. The main objective of this communication is to set the methodology for the graphic survey according to this type of monuments, establish the workflow, and finally, show the graphic documentation obtained.

Abstract:
A Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation based method for designing and testing of fluid power driven machines has recently been studied in [1], [2] and [3]. In those papers the method has successfully been tested for driving physical prototypes with simulation models of various hydraulic circuits. Although the results of the tested method have appeared to be reasonable the critical boundary conditions of the system has not yet been studied. In this paper a simple hydraulic system is modeled and used for driving the simulator. The simulated system is then built from real components and measured. The measured and simulated results are compared. One of the main goals of this paper is to find answer to the following question: What is the maximum bandwidth that can be put out from the simulator with sufficient accuracy. The answer demonstrates the applicability of the developed HIL-simulator. Also different sizes of time steps are studied.

Abstract:
A three-dimensional finite element model is presented to simulate the welding process of the side-hill control-rod-drive-mechanism (CRDM) nozzle to the vessel head. Emphasis is given to how the weld is laid out in the analysis so that accurate residual stress results can be obtained while the required computing time is viable. In the order of complexity, three approaches are examined in this study: a) the simultaneous approach, i.e., the weld bead (therefore the heat associated with it) is put in the model in a uniform fashion; b) the piece-by-piece approach, i.e., the weld is laid out segment by segment; c) the moving-source approach where the analysis is done by simulating the moving heat source. It is found that there is a significant difference between the stress results by the uniform approach and the piece-by-piece approach. While the moving source method gives the closet representation of the welding process, the computing time for such a multi-pass, three-dimensional model is still prohibitive. The natural choice is therefore the piece-by-piece approach, with the number of segments for the weld dependent on the weld parameters and the geometries of the nozzle and vessel head.

Abstract:
The drilling industry is characterized by a rapid and up front technology development to conquer larger water and drilling depths. The level of automation has been steadily increasing over several decades, growing from manually operated sledge-hammer technology to space-age computer-based integrated systems. Most of the automation systems on today’s vessels are put into operation without independent testing. This is a paradox considering that a single control system may be more complex than all the mechanical systems onboard. It is also a paradox that the automation systems often contain safety-critical failure handling functionality that may be difficult or dangerous to test onboard the real vessel, and therefore is not properly tested until it is activated during an emergency situation. These automation systems are essential for the safety, reliability, and performance of the vessels. Examples are the Dynamic Positioning (DP) systems, Power Management systems, Drilling Control Systems, BOP control systems, Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) systems, and crane control systems. Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) testing is a well proven test methodology from automotive, avionics, and space industries, and is now also gaining recognition in the marine and offshore industries. The aim of this paper is to clarify what HIL testing is, how third party HIL testing can be applied to safety critical control system software on drilling ships and rigs, and why this is an important contribution to technical safety, reliability and profitability of offshore operations.

"Completion Design and Hydraulic Fracturing Evolution in a Tight Reservoir Having Low Poisson's Ratio and Low Young's Modulus: A Case Study in Aishwariya Barmer Hill (ABH) Oil Field, Rajasthan, India." Abstract:
Abstract Aishwariya Barmer Hill (ABH) field is a moderate permeability (0.5 – 4 mD) oil bearing porcellanite with alternating sequences of tight shale. After successful appraisal campaign a full field development with multi-stage fracturing using cemented frac sleeves, field was brought online with Hydraulic Sucker Rod Pump (HSRP) as artificial lift and has been on production since 2019. However, a need was felt to review the frac and completion design on account of challenges faced during fraccing and unplanned downtime during production operations. Critical observations that prompted a change in completion and frac technology are: Formation rock pebbles and proppant were observed in the wellbore during workovers.Reservoir's low Young's Modulus (YM) allows the generating high strains at low pressures, while low Poisons Ratio (PR) makes the rock brittle and shatter under high deformation. Consequently, shattered rock was not able to hold the proppant in place after fracture closure resulting into flowback of proppant and pebbles.Debris fill in wellbore resulted in production impairment and malfunctioning of HSRP. To mitigate the identified risks, the design change incorporates measures to address post fracturing production problems related to high treating pressures as well as optimize number of frac stages and stage spacing. Uniform proppant distribution with lesser number of stages is targeted by utilizing limited entry technique to help in distributing treatment pressures and proppant in multiple clusters as well as limit net pressure build up in each frac. It will help prevent rock shattering and better retention of proppant after frac closure. Completion design workflow includes log based zonal isolation between each stage and frac design for two to three cluster per stage. The revised design will predict the number of stages in each well for optimal utilization of wellbore for best economical production. Revised frac design has been implemented in 5 infill wells wherein 66 stages have been pumped without TSO signature or premature screen out in any of the stages. Wells have been put on production and are performing better than rest of the wells in the field. There has been no evidence of debris accumulation in wellbore or proppant flowback in production fluid. Further drilling campaign for 15 wells has been planned with cluster frac strategy with revised frac design.
