Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract. On 18 January 2011, at 20:23 UTC, an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 occurred in southwestern Pakistan (latitude 28°44' N, longitude 63°56' E) at a depth of 68 km. We present the results of the analysis of very low frequency (VLF) radio signals, received at three stations located in India. We analyze the VLF signals around this earthquake day and look for possible precursory effects of this earthquake. For our analysis, we use four different VLF propagation paths. These propagation paths are DHO–IERC (Sitapur), VTX–Pune, VTX–ICSP (Indian Centre for Space Physics, Kolkata) and NWC–IERC. We observed significant shifts of the "sunrise terminator time" (SRT) for DHO–IERC and VTX–Pune paths. For DHO–IERC path, the SRT of the VLF signals shifted towards nighttime three days before the earthquake day, and in the case of VTX–Pune path it shifted towards nighttime just one day before the earthquake day. For VTX–Kolkata path, the shift of SRT is four days before the earthquake day, but here the shift is not so strong, somewhere between 2σ and 3σ lines. For the other two paths, namely, DHO–IERC and VTX–Pune, the terminator time shifts crossed the 3σ line. We found no significant shifts of SRT for NWC–IERC propagation path. Higher deviation in the VTX–Pune path as compared to VTX–ICSP path could be due to the proximity of the former to the epicenter. Similarly, DHO–IERC path is over the epicenter while NWC–IERC path is totally away from the epicenter. This could be the reason why the effect in DHO–IERC path is stronger than that in NWC–IERC path.

Abstract:
Pune, described as the Queen of the Deccan, [1] is located in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is a historic city associated with the Maratha Empire and seat of the Peshwa power. During the Colonial Period it was a British cantonment. Contemporary Pune city is considered as the cultural capital of Maharashtra and is also referred to as the Oxford of the East due to the presence of several well-known educational institutions. The old city of Pune is constituted by the seventeen Peths or localities. The wadas are a characteristic built-form that evolved during the Maratha Period. They were the residences not only of the Peshwas but also those connected with the administrative system of the times and are the manifestations of the culture of the period. They vary considerably in size and form. They have a characteristic spatial organization harmonizing form and space with distinct architectural features. They were once the seat of power, intrigue and grandeur. Now, they are the surviving witnesses of battle plans and palace intrigues at the height of glory of the Maratha Empire. After more than three hundred and fifty years the wadas themselves are waging a final battle for survival considering the apathy towards their woes and issues from both the civic body as well as their private owners. The objective of the paper is to explore the possibility of developing selected wadas as nodes in developing Pune city’s culture infrastructure as well as heritage showcase. It seeks site specific solutions of ‘Energizing the Future with the Memories of the Past’ in Pune city.

Abstract:
Pune has witnessed enormous industrial growth, rapid urbanization in the recent past and has put the city's travel infrastructure to stress. Being a densely populated area, Pune's traffic needs cannot be met by road-based transportation systems and additional flyovers. Considering this, the Pune Metro project a strong public transport system partly elevated, and partly underground Line 1 and the completely elevated Line 2 has been discussed and undertaken by Maha Metro Rail Corporation. With the rise in demand, the responsibility for a safe and efficient public transport system also increases hence proper planning, designing, and execution play a vital role. The underground tunnel stretch of the Pune Metro Line 1 project is carried out by TBM and by segmental lining as a support system. By geotechnical parameters and FEM, RS2 software author analyses the ground behaviour and support system and conveys a basic understanding of ground behaviour and results in guidelines for designing the underground tunnel.

Abstract:
The urban heat island (UHI) effect is one of the prominent impacts of urbanization that affects human health and energy consumption. As the data is limited and inconsistent, UHI comparative studies between UHIUCL and UHISurf on the seasonal scale are limited. The use of only daytime summer imagery reporting “Inverted UHI” undermines the holistic view of the phenomenon. Therefore, this study analyses the seasonal patterns for UHISurf and UHIUCL in three climate zones (Delhi, Pune, and Montreal). The three cities experience a high traditional night-time UHIUCL (Delhi 7°C, Pune 6°C, Montreal 1.89°C). Landsat captures a prominent daytime UHISurf (15°C) in Montreal with temperate climate and daytime inverted UHISurf (-4°C) for Delhi in summer. Seasonally, the night-time UHI is prominent in summer and monsoon for Delhi, summer and spring for Pune, and summer for Montreal. Due to UHI effect, the heatwaves can be more intense in semi-arid and tropical cities than temperate cities.

Abstract:
Background: The Alberta infant motor scale (AIMS) is a norm-reference test that assessed the spontaneous motor performance of infant 0-18 month. AIMS is development, motor assessment tools in the evaluation of motor risk in infants, but this scale was formulated by using western samples. In every country various differences are observed in the culture and ethnicity. Therefore, there is a need to establish normative value of AIMS in Pune population. Aim of the study was to establish normative value of AIMS in Pune population. Methods: A descriptive one time study of 420 healthy infants aged between 0 to 18 months was included in the study. Infants were observed in prone, supine, sitting, and standing positions. Infants were measured using the AIMS test and represent normative value in Pune population. Results: Medcalc software was used for the statistical analysis. For each month we calculated the mean AIMS score, and standard deviation, as well as percentiles. Results showed increases in raw scores across age groups from 0 to 15 months of age. The stability of raw scores was observed after 16 months of age. Pune infants demonstrated lower scores in specific ages compared to the Canadian sample. Conclusions: Although the AIMS is used in both research and clinical practice, it has certain limitations in terms of behavioral differentiation before 2 months and after 15 months. This reduced sensitivity at the extremes of the age range may be related to the number of motor items assessed at these ages’ months.

Abstract:
SUMMARYFaecal specimens collected from 2101 patients with acute gastroenteritis from three cities (Pune, Alappuzha, Belgaum) in India during 1994–1995 and 2004–2010 were tested for group B rotavirus (RVB) by amplification of theNSP2gene using RT–PCR. Seventy-five (3·6%) specimens were shown to contain RVB RNA. The positivity rate in Pune, Alappuzha and Belgaum was 4·1%, 7·3% and 4·1%, respectively, in the 2000s which was not significantly different from the detection rate in the 1990s in Pune (2·5%,P>0·05). RVB infections prevailed in adolescents and adults (62/1082, 5·7%) compared to children (13/1019, 1·3%,P<0·001) and were detected throughout the year. Phylogenetically, all strains clustered in an NSP2 lineage together with Indian-Bangladeshi RVB strains belonging to VP7 genotype G2. The study confirmed the occurrence of RVB infections in western India and reported for the first time circulation of RVB strains in southern India, suggesting that an increased awareness and monitoring for RVB infections is necessary in India.

DesignNon-randomised non-blinded school-based intervention study.SettingTwo schools in the cities of Pune and Nasik, India.ParticipantsThe intervention group comprised children attending a Pune school from 7–10 years until 12–15 years of age. Two control groups comprised children of the same age attending a similar school in Nasik, and children in the Pune intervention school but aged 12–15 years at the start of the study.InterventionA 5-year multi-intervention programme, covering three domains: physical activity, diet and general health, and including increased extracurricular and intracurricular physical activity sessions; daily yoga-based breathing exercises; making physical activity a ‘scoring’ subject; nutrition education; healthier school meals; removal of fast-food hawkers from the school environs; and health and nutrition education for teachers, pupils and families.Main outcome measuresBody mass index (BMI), waist circumference, physical fitness according to simple tests of strength, flexibility and endurance; diet; and lifestyle indicators (time watching TV, studying and actively playing).ResultsAfter 5 years the intervention children were fitter than controls in running, long jump, sit-up and push-up tests (p<0.05 for all). They reported spending less time sedentary (watching TV and studying), more time actively playing and eating fruit more often (p<0.05). The intervention did not reduce BMI or the prevalence of overweight/obesity, but waist circumference was lower than in the Pune controls (p=0.004).ConclusionsIt was possible to achieve multiple health-promoting changes in an academically competitive Indian school. These changes resulted in improved physical fitness, but had no impact on the children's BMI or on the prevalence of overweight/obesity.

Abstract:
Pashan lake is situated northwest to Pune railway station on NDA road. It is about 3 km from University of Pune Railway Station. The lake was screened for different physicochemical parameters of water and different form of algae during the year 2001-2002. Periodic collections have been made from selecting sampling points of the lake at an interval of a fortnight during January 2001-December 2002. The water samples have been collected in bottles and characterized for different physiochemical parameters the algal forms were observed preserved in 4% formalin and Lugol's solution for detail studies. The live as well as preserved forms were observed under phase contract microscope and identifies with the help of Philipose, Smith, Fritsch and Prescott. Individual algal form or colony was micro photographed in Department of Botany, University of Pune, Pune-411007. The result revealed that the water temperature varied from 16-36oC, where as pH ranged from 6.5 to 7.4 . A marked variation in total alkalinity was observed during summer season. The dissolved oxygen content was high during summer season Nitrate level varied from 1.02 2.532 mg /L. Lowest concentration of nitrate, phosphate, chloride, carbonate, sulphate, calcium and magnesium were recorded during the pre-monsoon seasons. The results on fresh water algae indicated that most of the algae forms were planktonic, free floating and epiphytic. The algae forms belong to different genera of Cyanophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Dinophyceae, Chrysophyceae and Euglenophyceae. The results on seasonal variations in algal forms revealed that the members of Cyanophyceae were abundant in monsoon while members of Chlorophyceae were increased during the post monsoon to winter season. On the other hand diatoms were found abundant throughout the year except in October-November. The result of the present investigation revealed that physicochemical parameters of lake water significantly influenced the algae vegetation.

Abstract:
Savitribai Phule Pune University is known for its biodiversity in Pune. In the present study, we have analyzed changes which have occurred on the campus and surrounding area over the last 40 years. Of the 90 bird species reported in the campus and Khadki pond in 1976, we failed to notice 34 species in 2018. A major reason for the decline in bird diversity could be changes in the campus habitat from low scrub jungle, fallow lands and grassland to buildings, roads, and exotic plantations. Increase in human settlement surrounding the campus may also be a contributing factor. Replacing exotic plants by indigenous plant species and control of land use can prevent further loss of biodiversity.

Abstract:
Background: Aflatoxin contamination in groundnuts is caused by the fungi Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. In this study, the prevalence of aflatoxin B1 in groundnuts has been assessed. Aflatoxins are highly carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic. They are known to cause hepatocellular toxicity. The aim of the study is to estimate prevalence of aflatoxin contamination in groundnuts sold in the city of Pune and to assess the awareness about aflatoxin contamination amongst shopkeepers of selected shops/vendors.Methods: Sampling of groundnuts was conducted in 17 out of 144 administrative wards of Pune city. Hundred samples weighing 250g each were purchased from the randomly selected stores and transported in black polythene bags to The State Public Health Laboratory, Pune. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) was used by the laboratory to determine levels of aflatoxin B1. A pre-structured questionnaire was used for assessment of knowledge of aflatoxin contamination amongst vendors. Results: Out of 100 samples, four samples were contaminated with aflatoxin. However the maximum contamination was 0.6 parts per billion, which is well within the permissible limit of 30 parts per billion. Awareness of aflatoxin contamination amongst vendors was six percent. Ninety four percent of vendors were unaware of the concept of aflatoxin contamination. Conclusions: It is necessary to educate vendors, suppliers and handlers about the health hazards caused by this toxic fungus for the benefit of the average consumer.

Abstract:
The process of urbanisation has dramatically increased in India in recent years. The Government of India launched Smart City Mission in 2015 which was intended to transform 100 cities into smart cities. The focus of our research is one such city in India on its path to smartification. Pune’s smart city mission focuses on techno-infrastructural development to increase mobility and digital connectivity. Social-cultural and historical indicators are not considered an integral part of this development. Given this, does the smart city mission of Pune privilege the techno-infrastructural development of a city over its social and cultural development? In this paper, we identify museums and heritage sites in Pune as signifiers of a city's culture and analyse metro development plans through GIS to understand whether the museums' current geography mentioned above and heritage sites require alignment with Pune’s planned smart city mission. The research shows that the quest to ‘upgrade’ and ‘modernise’ is not adequately aligned with the role of key historic-cultural institutions such as museums and heritage sites. The case of Pune city shows that, without careful and inclusive development plan, a full roll-out of the smart city project will exclude a large number of historical and cultural spaces such as museums and heritage sites from emerging as an integral part of smart cities across the country and render them peripheral to modern urban life.

Abstract:
Background: Globally visual impairment is a serious public health, social and economic problem, 1.1 billion people are visually disabled. India has 12 million blind people. Studies conducted so far have highlighted mainly the medical aspects of blindness. With the intention to study medico-social aspects of blindness in India the current study was undertaken in two institutes for the blind in Pune. Methods: It was a cross sectional descriptive study conducted using a study questionnaire. A modified WHO eye examination record for blindness and low vision was administered to all (290) inmates of Technical Training Institute of Pune Blind Men’s Association and The Pune School and Home for the Blind Boys from 01 Aug 2014 to 31 July 2015 at Pune. Psychosocial aspects of inmates were recorded as per hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS). Analysis of collected data was done with the help of epi info and PEPI Programs version-4.Results: Retina (61.7 percent) and cornea (31.0 percent) were the main site of lesion. Overall, 40.4 percent had potentially avoidable cause of blindness. 46.6 percent of inmates had normal psychosocial patterns as per HADS scale. Conclusions: Strengthening of preventive and curative services for the complex medico-social aspects of blindness. Involvement of retina in 61.7 percent of inmates shows that genetically determined diseases are an emerging important cause of blindness justifies the requirement of genetic counselling along with other preventive and curative intervention for prevention of blindness in India.

Abstract:
Floods are natural risk with a very high frequency, which causes to environmental, social, economic and human losses. The floods in the town happen mainly due to human made activities about the blockage of natural drainage, haphazard construction of roads, building, and high rainfall intensity. Detailed maps showing flood vulnerability areas are helpful in management of flood hazards. Therefore, present research focused on identifying flood vulnerability zones in the Pune City using multi-criteria decision-making approach in Geographical Information System (GIS) and inputs from remotely sensed imageries. Other input data considered for preparing base maps are census details, City maps, and fieldworks. The Pune City classified in to four flood vulnerability classes essential for flood risk management. About 5 per cent area shows high vulnerability for floods in localities namely Wakdewadi, some part of the Shivajinagar, Sangamwadi, Aundh, and Baner with high risk.

Abstract:
Background: In India the proportion of early initiation of breastfeeding is hovering around 50% and the proportion of cesarean deliveries is increasing substantially. Objectives: To compare the prevalence of early initiation of breastfeeding (EIBF) among cesarean and vaginally delivered women in hospitals in Pune District, Maharashtra State, India and to measure any association between EIBF and various socio-demographic, maternal and fetal factors. Methods: This was a multi-site study conducted in 13 selected hospitals in Pune District in 2017-18. Pune District by population is the fourth largest in India. All women delivered by cesarean section in these hospitals and an equal number of age and parity matched vaginally delivered women were enrolled. They were interviewed before discharge by obstetricians or nurses under the supervision of obstetricians, using a structured, validated tool. The data were analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences, version 25. Results: In each group, 1,556 women were enrolled. The prevalence of EIBF was 81.5% and 63.6% among vaginally and cesarean delivered women. There was a significant association between EIBF and the place of residence, mode of delivery, gestational period, parity, and presence of some disease. Residence in the rural area was the strongest enabling factor with an adjusted odds ratio of 29.6 (95% C.I.; 18.7-46.9) whereas cesarean section, preterm delivery and first para were impeding factors. Conclusions: Among institutional delivered women EIBF was about 70%. Health care workers need to strongly promote EIBF awareness, especially among women from urban areas, and undergoing cesarean section.

Abstract:
Background and Aim: Cattle are the main reservoir of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and other verotoxigenic E. coli (VTEC); therefore, there is an increased risk of infection to humans by either direct or indirect mode of transmissions. However, the prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 in the healthy cattle population of India is yet to be ascertained. This study aimed to screen the dairy cattle in and around Pune, Maharashtra, India, for verotoxin-producing E. coli O157:H7. Materials and Methods: A total of 257 rectal swabs were collected from 15 different organized and unorganized dairy farms of Pune during the period, January-March 2015. The screening involved enrichment in EC broth followed by differential identification on MacConkey sorbitol agar. The presumptive positive isolates were further confirmed by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using primers specific to rfbE (O157), fliC (H7), VT1 (MK1), and VT2 (MK2). Vero-toxicity and antibiotic sensitivity were examined in PCR confirmed isolates. Results: Out of the 257 samples analyzed, 1.9% (2/105) were positive for O157:H7 and 39% (41/105) were positive for VTEC. Two PCR confirmed positive O157:H7 strains and two randomly selected PCR-positive VT strains exhibited in vitro cytopathic effect on Vero cells on day-7 post-inoculation. Antibiotic sensitivity profiling of O157:H7 strains exhibited resistance against penicillin G, kanamycin, ampicillin, tetracycline, gentamycin, cefotaxime, streptomycin, and piperacillin. Conclusion: These findings reveal the presence of pathogenic E. coli O157:H7 in the healthy cattle of Pune; in a situation, wherein regular surveillance for O157:H7 is not a norm. Therefore, the findings presented herein warrant routine surveillance and public awareness to prevent the transfer of such pathogens and manage health risks to the public.

Abstract:
IntroductionThe Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) hypothesis proposes that intrauterine and early life exposures significantly influence fetal development and risk for disease in later life. Evidence from prospective birth cohorts suggests a role for maternal B12 and folate in influencing neurocognitive outcomes in the offspring. In the Indian setting, B12 deficiency is common during the pregnancy while rates of folate deficiency are lower. The long-term influences of maternal nutrition during the pregnancy on adult neurocognitive outcomes have not been examined. The Pune Maternal Nutrition Study (PMNS) is a preconceptional birth cohort into its 24th year and is considered a unique resource to study the DOHaD hypothesis. We found an association between maternal B12 status in pregnancy and child’s neurocognitive status at 9 years of age. We now plan to assess neurocognitive function and MRI measurements of brain structural–functional connectivity at young adult age to study its association with maternal nutritional exposures during the pregnancy. Methods and analysisAs part of ongoing prospective follow-up in young adults of the PMNS at the Diabetes Unit, KEM Hospital Research Center, Pune India, the following measurements will be done: neurocognitive performance (Standardised Tests of Intelligence, Verbal and Visual Memory, Attention and Executive Functions), temperament (Adult Temperament Questionnaire), psychopathology (Brief Symptom Inventory and Clinical Interview on Mini Neuropsychiatric Interview 7.0). Brain MRI for structural T1, resting-state functional connectivity and diffusion tensor imaging will be performed on a subset of the cohort (selected based on exposure to a lower or higher maternal B12 status at 18 weeks of pregnancy).Ethics and disseminationThe study is approved by Institutional ethics committee of KEM Hospital Research Center, Pune. The results will be shared at national and international scientific conferences and published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.Trial registration numberNCT03096028
