Abstract:

This thesis is the result of a final project work carried out by Anna Friestedt and Kristin Sjövall during the spring semester of 2006. The purpose of this work is to investigate in what ways the Indian city Pune is working towards ecological sustainability within the fields of housing and transporting. The work contains a case study of an area in Pune called Magarpatta City.

The report is split into four parts. First, laws and regulations both in Sweden and in India that concern ecologically sustainable development are presented. Second, an explanation on existing solutions within housing and transporting in Pune follows, later specified details concerning the case study in Magarpatta City is presented and finally this is analysed.

Pune is in many ways working to improve their ways of ecologically sustainable development. In India, and Pune, there are several laws and regulations to regulate sustainable development. Unfortunately it has been a long time since these laws and regulations were updated and by doing so one might achieve sustainability.

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has many projects on the go to improve the city environmentally. PMC has brought out an Eco-housing concept which promotes a more ecological way of building. The concept makes it easier for private builders to get a bank loan if the construction is considering several eco-friendly aspects. To achieve more houses constructed in an eco-friendly way Pune and India are in the need of more pilot projects showing eco-friendly materials and construction techniques. PMC is also taking decisions in how to transform the public transportation system to a more environmentally sustainable one. Several different transportations systems are under evaluation. After our time in Pune our meaning is that the Bus Rapid Transit system is the most cost efficient one to implement in Pune.

Magarpatta City is an area in Pune that is developed considering the concept ‘walk-to-work and walk-to-school’. The area has made many efforts towards ecological sustainability and is probably the best area in Pune, as well as in all of India, to do a case study at, in the aspect of ecological sustainable housing and transporting.

Abstract:
As developing India faces rapid urbanization, the provision of sufficient infrastructure facilities to the informal settlers remains a major challenge. Pune is a second tier city in the state of Maharashtra which is transforming itself into a metropolitan city. The research is an attempt to better understand the existence of slums, explore and suggest empowerment opportunities to improve the living conditions of an informal settlement dweller. It questions the scope and limitations of the architectural profession specific to the responsibilities of architects towards the impoverished people within the society. This study argues and advocates the need to understand and respond accordingly to the needs of the people who lack access to resources. As an attempt to better understand this perspective, the study takes a closer look at the works and philosophies of Dr. Wes Janz, Dr. Nihal Perera, Prof. Hector LaSala, Lebbeus Woods, Ar. Pratima Joshi, Prof. Nabeel Hamdi, and Robert Neuwirth. Also the research explains the efforts of several non profit organizations like School on Wheels (Indianapolis), Second Helpings (Indianapolis), Hamara Footpath (Mumbai, India), and MicroPlace which work towards providing better living conditions to disadvantaged people. The study concludes with a proposal for a Non Governmental Organization in Pune, India that will provide the slum dwellers access to education, the internet, and monetary resources which will lead towards their enablement.

Abstract:
Hawkers are very well represented in the indian cities and they occupy of increasingly bulky spaces. They are classified in the + informal sector ;, sector heterogeneous gathering of the multiple activities whose study is not possible. This work thus aims at studying the operation of a single activity and the analysis of cooked food street vendors has an economic interest combined with a cultural relevance socio in india. Indeed, this vast under continent, rhythm by the cast-system treat on a hierarchical basis the population in groups. Food defines the individuals between them and the study of the cooked food street vendors cannot disregard this cultural variable socio. Lastly, the sights of the space influences of the travelling sales in complex urban contexts, the public authorities exploit a part the commercial activity. The results obtained show that the activity reproduces daily under economic conditions, social and space difficult. Indeed, the vendor has very modest incomes, the customers do not constitute an engine for the economic activity and the public authorities disturb operation

F, Larsson Pär. "Accidental foreigners: Young Iranian migrants in Pune and Kuala Lumpur." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/459077.

Abstract:
Over the last two decades a sizable community of young Iranians have made their way to Malaysia and India. Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Pune in India have become hosts to some of the biggest Iranian communities in Asia. In the 1980s, in the wake of the Islamic Revolution and during the Iran – Iraq war, waves of Iranians moved to the West. In general they presumed that their stay in the West, mainly in southern California, but also in Germany, the UK, Sweden and France, would be temporary They had their bags packed during the first few years, ready to return back home as soon as things would calm down. The situation did not reverse however, and thousands of Iranians made the US and Europe their home. 30 years later, a common topic of conversation in Iran is the ways available to leave the country. Moving abroad has become an obsession for the urban youth of Iran. However, these days it is not so easy to leave the country. In the days of the Shah it was easy for someone with an Iranian passport to visit Europe. Today, because of the political situation, it has become very difficult to get a visa for the Schengen area or North America – the traditional destinations for Iranians. The options for Iranians who want to emigrate are limited especially if they want to move to the West. The neighbouring countries are usually not options that appear attractive. However, during the last two decades other destinations have emerged and thousands of Iranians have moved to Malaysia and India, mainly to Kuala Lumpur and Pune as mentioned. While there is a wealth of literature on Iranians who emigrated to the West very little is known of the Iranians who left for countries east of Iran. In this thesis the trajectories and perceptions of young Iranians who left for India and Malaysia are explored.

Globally, more people live in urban areas than in rural areas. As cities grow and urban areas expand, rural villages are facing a unique problem of experiencing an in-between state identified as Peri-Urban. In these geographies, an increasing number of children are growing up without access to basic amenities like playgrounds. This thesis is an exploration of integrating playful landscapes into early childcare experience by analyzing the anganwadi model in India. While the importance of education in Indian society is undisputed, there is a lack of awareness about engaging children with their immediate surroundings through play. Play is essential to a country's development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children. However, there is no theoretical understanding of a construct such as child friendly playscapes in Peri-Urban areas which fall under rural governance but face urban problems. An in-depth analytic study was conducted in Khanapur village in Haveli Taluka, Pune District, India, with children in the age group of 0 to 6 years to validate the above proposition. The study used four kinds of data: interviews, first hand observations, drawings by children, and archival documents. Research showed that Peri-Urban areas have an abundance of natural resources but with increasing vehicular movement and real-estate development, safety issues and land-crunch have affected outdoor free play activities. The thesis discusses the importance of overcoming religious and social beliefs to use the existing network of temples, shopfronts, medical centres and natural habitats to enhance the play experience. This led to the development of a framework at village and district to propose playscapes using natural materials at a multi-scalar level: 1) Anganwadi design 2) Streetscapes 3) Communityscapes 4) Regionscapes. The framework provides a set of urban design guidelines, programs and recommends changes to the land-reservation and acquisition process under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme. The design guidelines provide easy low-cost solutions using community participation to empower the anganwadi workers and caregivers. The local planning agencies may use these recommendations to develop an all-inclusive development plan which ensures that every child has access to his fundamental right to play spatially and not only virtually through digital tools. This thesis offers solutions to safeguard the quality of life for children in India's Peri-Urban areas which are in a state of flux. Keywords: Place making, early-childcare, landscape, Peri-Urban development.

Abstract:
Over the centuries, cities have gained limelight and have significantly grown powerful with an increased level of importance. The rapid growth and urbanization posing a fatally critical threat to the future as the population is growing with each day. The development from the rural to urban life and the journey to an urban civilization has left the city in tatters. It has had adverse impacts on both social and environmental frontiers. Such rapid growth has led to the uncontrolled growth of population in countries that are in the process of development, and this growth is interpreted by means of concrete structuring with no apparent thought given to fundamentals such as feasibility, aesthetics, health, safety, road network or transportation. This leaves a very small window for even accommodating places for recreation in unplanned cities. Such spaces use shared spaces for recreation. Spaces like markets or public squares or streets. The cultural heritage of India lies solely in its old cities, towns and ancient settlements. Due to globalization and groundbreaking pace of urbanization in the recent times, the historic fabric has been radically altered. As cities have evolved through aspirations and ideas only, with no functional thought whatsoever, it is vital for a developing country like India to recognize that without regard for its heritage it cannot build a future, or that a development without its heritage would be only unsustainable.

Paik, Shailaja. "Daughters of the lesser god : Dalit women's education in postcolonial Pune." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2007. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/1157/.

Full text
Abstract:
'Daughters of the Lesser God: Dalit Women's Education in Postcolonial Pune' examines the nexus between caste, gender and state pedagogical practices in relationship to Dalit (exuntouchable) women ofPune (India). Based on interviews with three generations of Dalit women, it examines the ways in which they have experienced and made use of their formal education in schools and colleges. It traces their lives as they have over the generations migrated from rural areas to the cities, and from city slums to, in some cases, middle-class neighbourhoods. The women belong to two Dalit communities - the Mahars and the Matangs - who are traditionally rivals and competitors. It is argued that the education system discriminates against Dalit women in ways that mirror their socio-economic and religious disabilities. Dalits valourise institutes of formal education for escaping their historical and contemporary degeneration. They look upon education as a primary means of gaining employment, and of advancing economically and socially. Nonetheless, the process of education frequently subjects Dalit girls to humiliating experiences that smothers the hopes of many. These are described and analysed in detail, revealing how the caste system subjects Dalit in general, and Dalit women in particular, to the· 'physical and mental violence' of constant indignities and humiliations. Although the recently burgeoning writing by Dalits has a lot to say on the experience of Dalit men, Dalit women are largely neglected in this literature - something that this thesis seeks to rectify. The thesis also interrogates the ways in which culture is deployed and represented, showing how the process of subjectivation works to produce not merely forms of domination but also complicity and dissent. In recent years, increasing numbers of Dalit women have found ways of resisting the prevalent hegemony, and the research pinpoints the ways in which some have managed to use the education system to their advantage. Wider questions are raised about the ways that the Dalits, and specifically Dalit women, create spaces and sites for their own self-assertion and betterment, and how they engage with modernity in other ways. The dissertation is concerned with contributing to and furthering the dialogue on gendering education and caste. Dalit lives are built on a long history of suffering, anxiety, desire, and struggle, and the creative visions of social justice put forward by Dalits can continue to inspire and shape the consciousness of local and transnational participants in their battles against oppressive and exploitative systems.

With increasing population and per-capita capita waste generation, cities in India and other developing countries are seeking alternative strategies to manage the organic fraction of municipal solid waste in an effort to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and increase environmental performance. This thesis aims to explore the tradeoffs of various organic waste management strategies in the urban Indian context, specifically using a case study analysis of the waste system in the city of Pune. Door-to-door, primary, and secondary collection and four technologies for treating organics (landfilling, composting, anaerobic digestion, and pelletization) are analyzed with regard to cost and environmental performance. Because decentralized waste system architectures minimize transportation and allows wastepickers to maintain jobs, particular emphasis is made in this thesis to understand the cost and environmental implications treatment at a range of scales. To determine the quantity and composition of waste, we conducted waste audits of MSW that was collected from 2,650 households during two different seasons. Per-capita MSW generation in Pune was found to be 134, 309, and 401 grams/day for the lower, middle, and upper income residents, respectively. Of these totals, 80%, 66%, and 69% of the MSW was biodegradable. Given that middle and upper income residents generate 2.3 to 3 times what lower income residents generate, India can expect to see a significant increase in waste volumes as its population becomes wealthier. By comparing the spatial footprints of the technologies at a range of scales, it was found that pelletization of organic MSW (although it is not a fully developed technology) has great potential to reduce the spatial footprint of organic waste management. Cost modeling is used to identify the drivers of cost for each process and to identify the leastcost options. The cost per ton of waste managed using anaerobic digestion, composting, and pelletization decreases significantly with larger scale of treatment. Alternative organics management technologies used at small scales (less than 0.5 TPD) are more expensive than landfilling; however, if a facility of at least 0.5 TPD is used, anaerobic digestion is less expensive than landfilling. Pelletization and composting become less expensive than landfilling at the scale of 5 TPD and 200 TPD, respectively. Although the average cost of centralized organic waste systems is lower, the difference in cost between the lowest-cost decentralized systems and lowest-cost centralized systems was relatively small. A review of the relevant literature is used to identify the global warming impacts of organic waste processing. The global warming potential (GWP) of anaerobic digestion, pelletization, composting, and landfilling is estimated to be -51, -42, 38, and 510 kg CO-eq/ton, respectively. A city looking to minimize its contribution to global warming could achieve significant reductions in emissions by biodigesting food waste and peltetizing yard waste. Such systems would have a net greenhouse gas emissions savings of over 750 tons CO2-eq each year. Of the technologies assessed, anaerobic digestion (at scales of 5 TPD or larger) has the best combination of cost and GWP performance. However, because woody material cannot be digested, pelletization (at 10 TPD plants) has the best combination of cost and GWP performance specifically for handling yard waste. These findings suggest that for handling organic MSW, anaerobic digestion in combination with pelletization produces the best combination of cost and GWP performance.

As cities grow and rural fringes are urbanized, an in-between village state is emerging, that scholars are attempting to categorize as "Peri-Urban". Yet there are no existing models to quantify the population movements, infrastructure needs, and social characteristics of this rapidly emerging condition. The lack of diagnosis for the Peri-Urban State leads to uneven distribution of water resources, pollution of surface and groundwater, and unclear administrative lines. This thesis presents a dialectical field research and Census data mapping approach for visualizing peri-urban and rurban patterns at the district (Zilla Parishad) scale using Pune district in Maharashtra as a case study. We adapt Census of India demographic definitions of the rural-urban dichotomy along with distance-based definitions used in Maharashtra, and compare them with Census data on water and sanitation services. Our key findings from our research are the following: From interviews with village Gram Panchayats, we create a framework for identifying peri-urban drivers and processes. Through GIS spatial analysis, we identify extensive settlement patterns and size relationships with access to amenities. District field research and interviews identified village concerns associated with four main spatial processes of peri-urbanization in Pune district: i) megacity growth; 2) highway corridor development; 3) industrial zone development; and 4) smaller block town (taluka) expansion. The analysis returned to the construction of 2 Indices for Pune Zilla Parishad: The Water Supply and Waste Index, and a Dire Situations Index. These findings and maps were then reviewed by the Pune Zilla Parishad, Maharashtra State Government, and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation for feedback. Our frameworks are being evaluated for integration into Maharashtra's long-term water strategic planning. New, annually updated water and sanitation datasets at the national and state levels will make this combination of field and mapping research increasingly valuable for visualizing regional peri-urban and rurban conditions in the districts of India.

The emergence of Information Technology (IT) is increasingly influencing the socio-economic and physical landscape of cities. It has also resulted in development of predominantly IT based industrial cities. These cities have the opportunities and challenges with respect to the development of their socioeconomic, infrastructural and environmental conditions because of the influence of the IT based industrial activities. This article therefore pertains to the analysis of the perspective impacts of IT industry and allied activities on the development of an emerging IT industrial activity based city. For this purpose, Pune, an emerging IT city in India was considered as a case study. Survey research methodology and a system dynamics modelling approach were employed to measure the influential socio-economic, infrastructural and environmental parameters of the city by considering the city as a system. This research shows that the location of IT industry and associated functions contribute significantly towards the socio-economic development of a city in terms of IT industry export, State Gross Domestic Product (SGDP), per capita SGDP, employment generation, to name some relevant aspects. However, there would be a reduction in satisfaction level of the infrastructure and an increase in environmental stress in the system, which needs strategic attention. Further, the model results and scenarios can facilitate evolving of feasible policy and strategic guidelines for the wholesome development of such cities.

Full text
Abstract:
Café Culture is an ethnographic snapshot, taken in 2008, tracing the effects of globalisation from the perspective of young middle class urbanites in post-liberalisation Pune, India. It captures what was happening that sets this young generation apart – the first to grow up in post-liberalisation India – as a group in historical time, in relation to other life worlds in India, to 'Western' versions and as a rounded life world in itself. In 1991 India conclusively opened its economy to the global market economy. My ethnography shows that trends following economic liberalisation in unprecedented ways spurred changes that were already underway. It facilitated not only the emergence of a commodified leisure culture in the form of cafés, targeted at and appropriated by the young urban middle class, but also the creation of new fashions, more living space, national and international employment, mobility and economic independence. These tangible changes went hand in hand with transformations in practices and moral aesthetic standards. The young generation was challenging their parents' and wider society's values in order to negotiate who they wanted and felt they ought to be in their rapidly changing world. In their friendships, café culture activities, fashion choices, education and love lives they increasingly valued, encouraged and expected equality, freedom and the expression of individuality. However, the different chapters highlight that these trends were measured and limited by class- and generation-based practices and moral aesthetic standards which amended rather than negated older patriarchal arrangements predicated on the ideal of joint family life. The young café culture crowd was negotiating to follow their hearts, while preserving strong family bonds and inter-generational dependencies. They were thus modifying what it meant to be middle class Indians in our contemporary world of flow of people, capital, ideas, images, information and goods.

Abstract:
The author Mike Davis has labelled our entire globe as a planet of slums. This hesis aims to provide some insights to the research field of slum rehabilitation, and thus contribution to efforts to make our globe slum free. The United Nations states that security of tenure is one of the essential preconditions for improvements in slums. The statement comes with support from academic research, which highlights the relation between secure tenure and a slums physical quality. Out of these messages two hypotheses are formulated and tested throughout the thesis; one theoretical, the other empirical. The theoretical section holds that tenure should be studied according to property rights and tenure status, that interventions for slum rehabilitation should support the dwellers efforts of incremental development, that tenure is granted in both the informal and formal land market, and that there are several causalities between secure tenure and the quality of housing and infrastructure. The case study examines 208 informal settlements in terms of their living conditions in the city of Pune, India. The thesis draws on empirical data in the form of a citywide slum survey that has been made available by the non-governmental organisations, Maharashtra Action League and CHF International, both of which operate in Pune. The empirical section reveals that secure tenure does not influence housing quality at all, that secure tenure just slightly influences available infrastructure in a settlement, and that urban planners are able to support a sustainable and incremental rehabilitation of slums by focusing on tenure security.

Madan, Rohit. "Agri-tourism in peri-urban Mumbai and Pune : ecological citizenship and rural-urban linkages in the Global South." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2014. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/68629/.

Abstract:
Post structuralist research is increasingly influencing environmental knowledge – feminist/post-colonial authors have led the path for incorporating subjective and lived experiences of human-nature interactions into environmental discourses. In India's southern context, however, environmental literature, policy and governance are still dominated by structuralist discourses; hence wider environmental knowledge and governance remain detached from everyday life. Using a theoretical framework of "sustainable development" and "ecological citizenship", this PhD aims to rectify this literature gap through a qualitative analysis of agri-tourism in Maharashtra. Within peri-urban Mumbai and Pune, industrialization and urbanization are transforming the agrarian landscape. Although urbanization is displacing farmers from cultivation, it is also creating new opportunities through markets, education, employment and connectivity. These contribute to agriculture's transformation into serving multiple roles beyond food production – towards higher levels of multifunctionality. Agri-tourism is a form of agricultural multifunctionality. Farm owners provide urban visitors with accommodation, activities and entertainment on their privately owned farms. As a rural service, agri-tourism provides urban visitors a flavour of rural life and culture through recreation, farming activities and rural products. While revenue and jobs are created, there are also new opportunities for rural and urban interactions and environmental learning. Even though the news-media often portrays agri-tourism as "sustainable" and a low impact alternative to mainstream tourism, these claims have not been tested on the ground. Through fieldwork in three agri-tourism farms, this research unpacks how sustainability is interpreted in agri-tourism. It analyses how agri-tourism stakeholders (farm owners, urban visitors, employees and villagers) perceive notions of environmental responsibility and entitlements in the farm. Using narratives from over eighty semi-structured interviews, the analysis draws wider connections with neo-liberal policies in India. The study concludes that the most significant factor in shaping people's attitudes and values towards the environment is how they perceive "rurality" and "urbanization" in everyday life.

Abstract:
The focus of this study is the design of a public open space on the Mutha River corridor at Pune in India. Like any other river in India, the Mutha River has religious significance to the region. The river has influenced the location and development of the city and featured prominently in the history of the region. Most of the historic heritage values of the city are along the river and are located in the study area. Though the river has been abused by damming of the catchment, removal of vegetation for urbanization, polluted by human and industrial waste and channelization, it still provides opportunities to be developed as a recreational resource. Insights from a study of water bodies in Canberra, Australia, where the design of the water bodies for urban recreation encompass ideas of sustainable design, combined with an appreciation of the heritage of Indian design, are used for the river corridor development at Pune. The proposed development of the river corridor to include parkland is designed to provide a recreational open space for the community as well as improve the overall health and management of the Mutha River corridor. The proposal will also try and achieve long-term sustainability of the river. The design considers hydrological, morphological, ecological, water quality, aesthetic, vegetation, recreation and cultural issues. A more naturalistic channel as an alternative to a hard engineering solution is proposed. It provides protection from flood and erosion hazards, addresses social concerns like environment and health, and provides a more attractive landscape in the high-density section of the city

Abstract:
This master thesis is intended as a contribution to the understanding of the influence urban form has on urban life and by extension social structures in society, by focusing on gender relations and their reflections on the use of public space. In addition, the aim of the study is to do so in relation to a comparison between two different types of urban environments; one slum area that can be regarded as formally unplanned with an irregular gradually grown street network and one slum area of more deliberately planned character with a more regular street grid. With the use of quantitative methods, such as space syntax, structured observations and correlations studies, differences in co-presence between women and men, in the form of staying in public space, and between the areas are discovered. With the addition of qualitative methods, such as interviews and unstructured observations, as well as a review of the context in which the study is set and a theoretical discourse the reasons behind the differences is discussed. It is suggested that the blurred distinctions between private and public space often found in slum areas and the division of responsibilities and activities between women and men in the given context results in a certain degree of gender segregation in public space. Women are often restricted to the space in proximity of their homes, why it becomes an extension of their homes as well as a space for interaction which creates semi-public spaces. As men more often socialise further away from home in spaces of more public function, this creates a certain degree of segregation between women and men in public space. The most significant physical difference between the study areas proved to be the hierarchal properties of the street network. The clearer hierarchy in the unplanned area implicates that the spaces where women stays generally is of a lower degree of public function. The regular street grid of the planned area resulted in a more even distribution of public function, why men more often also stays in the semi-public spaces in residential alleys. In this way the built environment in the unplanned area reflects and reproduces gender relations in the use of public space. An implication is that since the correspondence between social structures in society and the use of public space is something that can assumed be effected by design, the urban designer has continuously in the context of development of slum areas in the developing world, and in general, an important role to play.

Abstract:
Dialectic of territory and economy is questioned from regional metropolitan areas located in India, where Information Technology and software activities cluster. Cities of Pune (Maharashtra), Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) represent some interesting labs to observe cumulative effects of the technopolitan process. The main research purpose is to grasp innovative spatial systems within three of its evolution stages: genesis, growth and adjustment capacities. From a perspective of climbing up the value-chain, this thesis aims to demonstrate the making of high-tech clusters is realized by simultaneous favorable actors’ play, stakeholders’ interactions and changing contexts. Economic geography of innovation and urban planning clarify this fact, by providing analyzing tools of multi-scaled and long-term system’s dynamics. Research underlines the leveraging effect of central and regional policies makers - either initiator, either facilitator - by encouraging strong economic, scientific and technological environment to develop software sector. In addition, studying places evidences overlapping of both urban and technopolitan fabric. Beyond the only IT parks, we prove that competitiveness strategies fraction the whole space getting benefits from metropolization. Finally, the examination of IT initiatives’ embeddedness within the city leads us to put forward the entrepreneur, at the same time world linked and localized. Furthermore, their deep involvement in social, scientific and professional networks implements good conditions for the innovative spatial systems evolution

Participation in Upgrading of Informal Settlements -a case study of the project “City In-situ Rehabilitation Scheme for Urban Poor Staying in Slums in City of Pune under BSUP, JNNURM”. Fyhr is a student at Human Geography Department at Stockholm University. This thesis for the course Urban and Regional Planning has been supervised by Andrew Byerley. The aim is to put the participatory approach of slum upgrading in context of rationality. What are different stakeholders approaches towards participatory planning? Are there any potential conflicts of interests with the participation approach used in the Yerwada project? Who are actually participating in real practice? How can different ways of rational thinking be explained in the questions above? This thesis is based on a 10 weeks MFS-study in India. The methodology is a case- study of a slum-upgrading project in Yerwada slum located in the city of Pune. Focus is on different rationalities which are embedded in the project. Two main rationalities are identified, the professionals’ rationality contra the beneficiaries. A clash between the two rationalities can be identified. This clash can be reduced by influence of NGOs and CBOs cooperating with authorities and building a bridge between professionals and the urban poor.              Key words: Yerwada, slum- upgrading, informal settlements, rationality, urban- poor, power, SPARC.

Abstract:
Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is a significant risk factor for peptic ulcer (PU) and gastric cancer (GC). Apart from the virulent CagA genotype of H. pylori environmental and dietary factors influence disease outcomes. There have been no studies addressing these factors in Western India. Hence, we conducted a case control study enrolling PU, GC patients and controls at Pune, India. Methods: Risk factors for PU and H. pylori infection were assessed in participant interview. H. pylori status was assessed from stool by monoclonal antigen detection. To understand treatment effect, we followed 100 H. pylori positive patients. Results: We enrolled 190 PU patients, 125 Controls and 35 GU patients. Prevalence of H. pylori was 61% among symptomatic patients and 45% among controls. H. pylori infection (OR: 1.70, 95% CI: 1.03-2.89), meat (OR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.02-1.75), fish (OR: 1.05, 95% CI: 1.02-1.89) consumption, and family history of ulcer (OR: 1.20, 95% CI: 1.08-1.60) were risk factors for PU. Consumption of snacks with alcohol (OR: 0.32, 95% CI: 0.13-0.78) and history of anti-parasite treatment (OR: 0.51, 95% CI: 0.30-0.86) were protective factors against PU. Lower socioeconomic status (SES) (OR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.02-1.39), meat consumption (OR: 2.35, 95% CI: 1.30-4.23), smoking (OR: 2.23, 95% CI: 1.24-4.02), eating restaurant food thrice per week (OR: 3.77, 95% CI: 1.39-10.23) and drinking non-filtered or non-boiled water (OR: 1.05, 95% CI: 1.01-1.23) were risk factors for H. pylori infection. Consumption of chili peppers (OR: 0.20, 95% CI: 0.10-0.37) and concurrent parasite infestation (OR: 0.44, 95% CI: 0.24-0.80) were protective against H. pylori infection. H. pylori infection was eradicated only in 53% (40/75) of treated patients. Conclusion: This study indicates that H. pylori infection is associated PU. Consumption of meat, fish and family history of PU are risk factors for PU. Lower SES, consumption of restaurant food, meat, non filtered water and smoking are risk factors for H. pylori infection. Consumption of chili peppers and concurrent parasite infestation are protective against H. pylori infectionwhile history of anti parasite treatment protects against PU. H. pylori were eradicated only in 53% of patients.

Abstract:
FLORIDA PURE is a satiric novel set in the orange juice industry of contemporary Florida that begins when the deaths of four migrant workers lead to the demise of the orange juice company, Florida Pure. The novel follows three plot lines that result from this demise. The company's fallen president has to cope with the loss of the company as well as the more recent loss of his wife, who has left him for the governor of Florida. A former Florida Pure trucker purchases an orange grove to make juice "honestly." And three brothers from Brazil seek to destroy the orange crop as a way of boosting global orange prices, which have fallen as a result of decreased juice demand. Light in tone, the narrative works to reflect the absurdity of modem life through themes of greed, social corruption, and the notion of destiny.

Abstract:
The present study aims to examine the modern Chinese Pure Land thought and movements, which are part of the general context of reforms that involved the whole Chinese Buddhist community starting from the beginning of the 20th century. In this study, I examine (1) the socio-political context of modern China when Chinese Buddhist communities began to re-think their traditions and reform monastic education, under the influence of socio-political chaos and Western culture; (2) Ven. Yinguang's (1861--1940) syncretism of Pure Land thought with Confucian ethical teachings, which promoted a more secular and lay movement in response to Western influence; (3) Ven. Yinshun's (1906--2005) critical Pure Land thought which went back to early Indian Buddhism to clarify some teachings which had been corrupted during the transmission of Buddhism to China; (4) modern movements influenced by their thought. According to Robert Bellah, there are two kinds of response of Asian traditional elites to modernization: neotraditionalism and reformism. Based upon my analysis of modern Chinese Pure Land thought and movements, I argue that this dichotomy is not mutually exclusive; the two categories can overlap. Yinguang and Yinshun were both neotraditionalist and reformist.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the everyday experiences of subcultural participants. It takes as its focus the Dutch punk scene, tracing its emergences and development and mapping it historically and spatially. It explores the meanings attached to punk by its participants past and present. If further situates punk as part of participants’ wider lives, in particular in their mobility, connectivity, political engagements and life choices. This thesis speaks to several areas of enquiry. It most prominently contributes to subcultural debates, as well as the emerging field of ‘punk studies’. However the research presented here also has implications for discussions of globalisation, particularly in terms of cultural flow and the effect on local scene ‘boundaries’. It further contributes to conceptual developments of political activity in a world with ever more emphasis on individualised choice. This is an ethnographic project. The arguments presented in this thesis are the result of fieldwork undertaken between July 2010 and April 2011. Data include semi-structured interviews with thirty-three participants of the Dutch punk scene, both past and present. Interview data is further contextualised with a fieldwork diary based on participant observation. As a result of this research, this thesis argues for an approach to social research that recognises the ‘messiness’ and the ‘connectedness’ of the social world. In order to unpick how punk operates and what meanings it has for members, we must understand the wider social, cultural and economic context in which subcultures – and their participants – are embedded. The thesis concludes that in order to productively conceptualise punk we must recognised the artificiality of a number of boundaries. By widening the lens of what punk is, by realising its global context, and by broadening our definition of politics, we will better understand the everyday meaning of punk to its participants around the world.

Full text
Abstract:
Absolutely pure modules act in ways similar to injective modules. Therefore, through-out this document we investigate many of these properties of absolutely pure modules which are modelled after those similar properties of injective modules. The results we develop can be broken into three categories: localizations, covers and derived functors. We form S1M, an S1R module, for any Rmodule M. We state and prove some known results about localizations. Using these known techniques and properties of localizations, we arrive at conditions on the ring R which make an absolutely pure S1Rmodule into an absolutely pure Rmodule. We then show that under certain conditions, if A is an absolutely pure Rmodule, then S1A will be an absolutely pure S1Rmodule. Also, we dene conditions on the ring R which guarantee that the class of absolutely pure modules will be covering. These include R being left coherent, which we show implies a number of other necessary properties. We also develop derived functors similar to Extn R (whose development uses injective modules). We call these functors Axtn R, prove they are well dened, and develop many of their properties. Then we dene natural maps between Axtn(M;N) and Extn(M;N) and discuss what conditions on M and N guarantee that these maps are isomorphisms.

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate to what extent Swedish upper secondary school learners of L2 English understand the meanings of polysemous words and whether puns can be used to teach such words. A test and two questionnaires were constructed to retrieve data from both students and teachers. The results of the study show that Swedish upper secondary school learners of L2 English generally have an acceptable knowledge of polysemous words, but depending on the type of program the students are attending, their understanding differs. Based on these results, it was also concluded that puns can be used in education to teach students about the meanings of polysemous words. The results from the questionnaires display that students in general have a positive attitude towards using puns in the classroom and that they found them entertaining and humorous. In addition, the students also saw this approach as beneficial to their retention and motivation. Lastly, the teachers expressed that using humor can strengthen the learning process, and if the students find the teaching situation enjoyable, they learn faster and it can increase their retention.

Abstract:
SCSQ (Scalable Stream Query processor) is a data stream management system (DSMS) that allows different kinds of distributed high-volume infinite streams to be queried. The current Java interface to SCSQ usesC libraries to communicate between Java and a SCSQ server. Therefore, a pure Java client-server interface to SCSQ is needed. Unlike regular databases, DSMS can process queries over infinite streams. Such continuous queries (CQs) are running until they are explicitlyterminated. The interface must be able to process infinite scans of continuous query results. This master thesis implements a pure Java client-server interface to SCSQ which can handle CQs.

Abstract:
The basic properties of distributivity and deletion of pure and o-substitution are investigated. The obtained results are applied to show preservation of recognizability in a number of surprising cases. It is proved that linear and recognizable tree series are closed under o-substitution provided that the underlying semiring is commutative, continuous, and additively idempotent. It is known that, in general, pure substitution does not preserve recognizability (not even for linear target tree series), but it is shown that recognizable linear probability distributions (represented as tree series) are closed under pure substitution.

In this thesis is summarized the progress toward completing our understanding of the Rydberg system of CaF and developing Pure Electronic Spectroscopy. The Rydberg system of CaF possesses a paradigmatic character due to its strongly polar ion-core. The first characterization of the Stark effect in a Rydberg system of this nature is presented here, and a diagnostic application of the Stark effect for making assignments of N+ and f quantum numbers has been demonstrated. In addition, a general method, which relies on polarization diagnostics and is applicable not only to studies of Rydberg states, for making unambiguous rotational assignments in the absence of rotational combination differences, has been described for the case of unresolved doublet states. New information, obtained using the Stark effect and polarization diagnostics, has furthered our knowledge of the partially core-penetrating character of nominally core-nonpenetrating states. In order to systematically obtain the same information that is contained in a Stark effect spectrum, but with less difficulty, we are developing experimental methods to record same-n* Rydberg-Rydberg transitions directly, using Time Domain THz and Chirped-Pulse Microwave Spectroscopies. In both of these methods, the spectrum is recorded in the time domain, which results in reliable relative transition intensities. We show that the relative transition intensities in a Rydberg-Rydberg spectrum provide information that permits separation of different interaction mechanisms between the Rydberg electron and the ion-core.

Miettinen, J. (Jari). "Miten puhe on taidetta?" Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2017. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201706022380.

Abstract:
Tutkielman tavoitteena oli tutkia, miten puhe on taidetta. Tutkimus tarjosi metodiksi puhetaiteelle puheen ilmaisumuotoja, jotka olivat tutkimuksen keskeinen ongelma. Tutkielma kuvasi ja kartoitti puheenmuodostuksesta peräisin olevia ilmaisumuotoja. Puheenmuodostus on kehitetty 1910-luvulla Rudolf Steinerin antroposofian pohjalta. Tutkielman kirjoittaja on 30 vuotta työskennellyt ilmaisumuodoista tietoisena. Tutkielmassa kehitettiin ilmaisumuotojen valintametodi diskurssianalyyttista ajattelua hyödyntäen. Tutkielman teoriaosuus selvensi Steinerin näyttämötaiteen impulssin luonnetta kommentoiden David Mametin kirjoituksilla. Tutkielma vastasi puheen olevan taidetta ilmaisumuotojen avulla. Tutkielmaan liittyy pedagoginen aspekti. Taiteellinen pedagogiikka voi yksinkertaisimmillaan toimia jo ihmisen puheessa. Tutkielma selvensi puheen olevan pedagoginen alue tuoda kasvatukseen ihmisen kokonaisuuden kokemus. Tutkielma opettaa ihmisiä löytämään tekstistä puheen ilmaisumuotoja ja käyttämään niitä. Ilmaisumuotojen avulla lasten parissa toimivat aikuiset voivat esimerkiksi rohkaistua tavoittelemaan vivahteikasta puheilmaisua.

Abstract:
Our investigation is about launching a business on the market, which is represented in our Plus Pure Water brand. Company focused on offering ecological profile purifying filters for people of the socioeconomic level A, B and C of Lima Metropolitana who seek to obtain pure water and reduce the environmental impact. The project extends in all phases that we had to go through to support our business proposal. Thus, it initially explains how our value proposition was developed, highlighting the main benefits of our product and how the different needs of our target audience will be met. Then, we present a series of experiments that had as their main purpose the validation of the business idea, for this we use advertising and marketing strategies on social networks to present the filters and give them exposure through all our channels of attention. At this stage of the work we developed how we had the first approach with our potential clients due to the interactions that occurred in those media. At the end of this point, we move on to the way we make the sales projections in order to sustain our profitability in the Market. Finalizing the estimation of revenue by filters and spare parts, we went on to develop the planning of strategies by administrative area, in which we present schedules of activities for each sector, in addition the budgets established by area over a horizon of three years.
