Friestedt, Anna, and Kristin Sjövall. "Ecologically sustainable housing and transporting in Pune, India : Ekologiskt hållbar hus- och transportplanering i Pune, Indien." Thesis, Jönköping University, JTH, Civil Engineering, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-544.
Full textThis thesis is the result of a final project work carried out by Anna Friestedt and Kristin Sjövall during the spring semester of 2006. The purpose of this work is to investigate in what ways the Indian city Pune is working towards ecological sustainability within the fields of housing and transporting. The work contains a case study of an area in Pune called Magarpatta City.
The report is split into four parts. First, laws and regulations both in Sweden and in India that concern ecologically sustainable development are presented. Second, an explanation on existing solutions within housing and transporting in Pune follows, later specified details concerning the case study in Magarpatta City is presented and finally this is analysed.
Pune is in many ways working to improve their ways of ecologically sustainable development. In India, and Pune, there are several laws and regulations to regulate sustainable development. Unfortunately it has been a long time since these laws and regulations were updated and by doing so one might achieve sustainability.
Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has many projects on the go to improve the city environmentally. PMC has brought out an Eco-housing concept which promotes a more ecological way of building. The concept makes it easier for private builders to get a bank loan if the construction is considering several eco-friendly aspects. To achieve more houses constructed in an eco-friendly way Pune and India are in the need of more pilot projects showing eco-friendly materials and construction techniques. PMC is also taking decisions in how to transform the public transportation system to a more environmentally sustainable one. Several different transportations systems are under evaluation. After our time in Pune our meaning is that the Bus Rapid Transit system is the most cost efficient one to implement in Pune.
Magarpatta City is an area in Pune that is developed considering the concept ‘walk-to-work and walk-to-school’. The area has made many efforts towards ecological sustainability and is probably the best area in Pune, as well as in all of India, to do a case study at, in the aspect of ecological sustainable housing and transporting.

"Accidental foreigners: Young Iranian migrants in Pune and Kuala Lumpur." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/459077.
Full textOver the last two decades a sizable community of young Iranians have made their way to Malaysia and India. Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and Pune in India have become hosts to some of the biggest Iranian communities in Asia. In the 1980s, in the wake of the Islamic Revolution and during the Iran – Iraq war, waves of Iranians moved to the West. In general they presumed that their stay in the West, mainly in southern California, but also in Germany, the UK, Sweden and France, would be temporary They had their bags packed during the first few years, ready to return back home as soon as things would calm down. The situation did not reverse however, and thousands of Iranians made the US and Europe their home. 30 years later, a common topic of conversation in Iran is the ways available to leave the country. Moving abroad has become an obsession for the urban youth of Iran. However, these days it is not so easy to leave the country. In the days of the Shah it was easy for someone with an Iranian passport to visit Europe. Today, because of the political situation, it has become very difficult to get a visa for the Schengen area or North America – the traditional destinations for Iranians. The options for Iranians who want to emigrate are limited especially if they want to move to the West. The neighbouring countries are usually not options that appear attractive. However, during the last two decades other destinations have emerged and thousands of Iranians have moved to Malaysia and India, mainly to Kuala Lumpur and Pune as mentioned. While there is a wealth of literature on Iranians who emigrated to the West very little is known of the Iranians who left for countries east of Iran. In this thesis the trajectories and perceptions of young Iranians who left for India and Malaysia are explored.

Globally, more people live in urban areas than in rural areas. As cities grow and urban areas expand, rural villages are facing a unique problem of experiencing an in-between state identified as Peri-Urban. In these geographies, an increasing number of children are growing up without access to basic amenities like playgrounds. This thesis is an exploration of integrating playful landscapes into early childcare experience by analyzing the anganwadi model in India. While the importance of education in Indian society is undisputed, there is a lack of awareness about engaging children with their immediate surroundings through play. Play is essential to a country's development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children. However, there is no theoretical understanding of a construct such as child friendly playscapes in Peri-Urban areas which fall under rural governance but face urban problems. An in-depth analytic study was conducted in Khanapur village in Haveli Taluka, Pune District, India, with children in the age group of 0 to 6 years to validate the above proposition. The study used four kinds of data: interviews, first hand observations, drawings by children, and archival documents. Research showed that Peri-Urban areas have an abundance of natural resources but with increasing vehicular movement and real-estate development, safety issues and land-crunch have affected outdoor free play activities. The thesis discusses the importance of overcoming religious and social beliefs to use the existing network of temples, shopfronts, medical centres and natural habitats to enhance the play experience. This led to the development of a framework at village and district to propose playscapes using natural materials at a multi-scalar level: 1) Anganwadi design 2) Streetscapes 3) Communityscapes 4) Regionscapes. The framework provides a set of urban design guidelines, programs and recommends changes to the land-reservation and acquisition process under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme. The design guidelines provide easy low-cost solutions using community participation to empower the anganwadi workers and caregivers. The local planning agencies may use these recommendations to develop an all-inclusive development plan which ensures that every child has access to his fundamental right to play spatially and not only virtually through digital tools. This thesis offers solutions to safeguard the quality of life for children in India's Peri-Urban areas which are in a state of flux. Keywords: Place making, early-childcare, landscape, Peri-Urban development.

With increasing population and per-capita capita waste generation, cities in India and other developing countries are seeking alternative strategies to manage the organic fraction of municipal solid waste in an effort to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and increase environmental performance. This thesis aims to explore the tradeoffs of various organic waste management strategies in the urban Indian context, specifically using a case study analysis of the waste system in the city of Pune. Door-to-door, primary, and secondary collection and four technologies for treating organics (landfilling, composting, anaerobic digestion, and pelletization) are analyzed with regard to cost and environmental performance. Because decentralized waste system architectures minimize transportation and allows wastepickers to maintain jobs, particular emphasis is made in this thesis to understand the cost and environmental implications treatment at a range of scales. To determine the quantity and composition of waste, we conducted waste audits of MSW that was collected from 2,650 households during two different seasons. Per-capita MSW generation in Pune was found to be 134, 309, and 401 grams/day for the lower, middle, and upper income residents, respectively. Of these totals, 80%, 66%, and 69% of the MSW was biodegradable. Given that middle and upper income residents generate 2.3 to 3 times what lower income residents generate, India can expect to see a significant increase in waste volumes as its population becomes wealthier. By comparing the spatial footprints of the technologies at a range of scales, it was found that pelletization of organic MSW (although it is not a fully developed technology) has great potential to reduce the spatial footprint of organic waste management. Cost modeling is used to identify the drivers of cost for each process and to identify the leastcost options. The cost per ton of waste managed using anaerobic digestion, composting, and pelletization decreases significantly with larger scale of treatment. Alternative organics management technologies used at small scales (less than 0.5 TPD) are more expensive than landfilling; however, if a facility of at least 0.5 TPD is used, anaerobic digestion is less expensive than landfilling. Pelletization and composting become less expensive than landfilling at the scale of 5 TPD and 200 TPD, respectively. Although the average cost of centralized organic waste systems is lower, the difference in cost between the lowest-cost decentralized systems and lowest-cost centralized systems was relatively small. A review of the relevant literature is used to identify the global warming impacts of organic waste processing. The global warming potential (GWP) of anaerobic digestion, pelletization, composting, and landfilling is estimated to be -51, -42, 38, and 510 kg CO-eq/ton, respectively. A city looking to minimize its contribution to global warming could achieve significant reductions in emissions by biodigesting food waste and peltetizing yard waste. Such systems would have a net greenhouse gas emissions savings of over 750 tons CO2-eq each year. Of the technologies assessed, anaerobic digestion (at scales of 5 TPD or larger) has the best combination of cost and GWP performance. However, because woody material cannot be digested, pelletization (at 10 TPD plants) has the best combination of cost and GWP performance specifically for handling yard waste. These findings suggest that for handling organic MSW, anaerobic digestion in combination with pelletization produces the best combination of cost and GWP performance.

As cities grow and rural fringes are urbanized, an in-between village state is emerging, that scholars are attempting to categorize as "Peri-Urban". Yet there are no existing models to quantify the population movements, infrastructure needs, and social characteristics of this rapidly emerging condition. The lack of diagnosis for the Peri-Urban State leads to uneven distribution of water resources, pollution of surface and groundwater, and unclear administrative lines. This thesis presents a dialectical field research and Census data mapping approach for visualizing peri-urban and rurban patterns at the district (Zilla Parishad) scale using Pune district in Maharashtra as a case study. We adapt Census of India demographic definitions of the rural-urban dichotomy along with distance-based definitions used in Maharashtra, and compare them with Census data on water and sanitation services. Our key findings from our research are the following: From interviews with village Gram Panchayats, we create a framework for identifying peri-urban drivers and processes. Through GIS spatial analysis, we identify extensive settlement patterns and size relationships with access to amenities. District field research and interviews identified village concerns associated with four main spatial processes of peri-urbanization in Pune district: i) megacity growth; 2) highway corridor development; 3) industrial zone development; and 4) smaller block town (taluka) expansion. The analysis returned to the construction of 2 Indices for Pune Zilla Parishad: The Water Supply and Waste Index, and a Dire Situations Index. These findings and maps were then reviewed by the Pune Zilla Parishad, Maharashtra State Government, and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation for feedback. Our frameworks are being evaluated for integration into Maharashtra's long-term water strategic planning. New, annually updated water and sanitation datasets at the national and state levels will make this combination of field and mapping research increasingly valuable for visualizing regional peri-urban and rurban conditions in the districts of India.

Full textThe emergence of Information Technology (IT) is increasingly influencing the socio-economic and physical landscape of cities. It has also resulted in development of predominantly IT based industrial cities. These cities have the opportunities and challenges with respect to the development of their socioeconomic, infrastructural and environmental conditions because of the influence of the IT based industrial activities. This article therefore pertains to the analysis of the perspective impacts of IT industry and allied activities on the development of an emerging IT industrial activity based city. For this purpose, Pune, an emerging IT city in India was considered as a case study. Survey research methodology and a system dynamics modelling approach were employed to measure the influential socio-economic, infrastructural and environmental parameters of the city by considering the city as a system. This research shows that the location of IT industry and associated functions contribute significantly towards the socio-economic development of a city in terms of IT industry export, State Gross Domestic Product (SGDP), per capita SGDP, employment generation, to name some relevant aspects. However, there would be a reduction in satisfaction level of the infrastructure and an increase in environmental stress in the system, which needs strategic attention. Further, the model results and scenarios can facilitate evolving of feasible policy and strategic guidelines for the wholesome development of such cities.

Full textDialectic of territory and economy is questioned from regional metropolitan areas located in India, where Information Technology and software activities cluster. Cities of Pune (Maharashtra), Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) represent some interesting labs to observe cumulative effects of the technopolitan process. The main research purpose is to grasp innovative spatial systems within three of its evolution stages: genesis, growth and adjustment capacities. From a perspective of climbing up the value-chain, this thesis aims to demonstrate the making of high-tech clusters is realized by simultaneous favorable actors’ play, stakeholders’ interactions and changing contexts. Economic geography of innovation and urban planning clarify this fact, by providing analyzing tools of multi-scaled and long-term system’s dynamics. Research underlines the leveraging effect of central and regional policies makers - either initiator, either facilitator - by encouraging strong economic, scientific and technological environment to develop software sector. In addition, studying places evidences overlapping of both urban and technopolitan fabric. Beyond the only IT parks, we prove that competitiveness strategies fraction the whole space getting benefits from metropolization. Finally, the examination of IT initiatives’ embeddedness within the city leads us to put forward the entrepreneur, at the same time world linked and localized. Furthermore, their deep involvement in social, scientific and professional networks implements good conditions for the innovative spatial systems evolution

In this thesis is summarized the progress toward completing our understanding of the Rydberg system of CaF and developing Pure Electronic Spectroscopy. The Rydberg system of CaF possesses a paradigmatic character due to its strongly polar ion-core. The first characterization of the Stark effect in a Rydberg system of this nature is presented here, and a diagnostic application of the Stark effect for making assignments of N+ and f quantum numbers has been demonstrated. In addition, a general method, which relies on polarization diagnostics and is applicable not only to studies of Rydberg states, for making unambiguous rotational assignments in the absence of rotational combination differences, has been described for the case of unresolved doublet states. New information, obtained using the Stark effect and polarization diagnostics, has furthered our knowledge of the partially core-penetrating character of nominally core-nonpenetrating states. In order to systematically obtain the same information that is contained in a Stark effect spectrum, but with less difficulty, we are developing experimental methods to record same-n* Rydberg-Rydberg transitions directly, using Time Domain THz and Chirped-Pulse Microwave Spectroscopies. In both of these methods, the spectrum is recorded in the time domain, which results in reliable relative transition intensities. We show that the relative transition intensities in a Rydberg-Rydberg spectrum provide information that permits separation of different interaction mechanisms between the Rydberg electron and the ion-core.

Full textOur investigation is about launching a business on the market, which is represented in our Plus Pure Water brand. Company focused on offering ecological profile purifying filters for people of the socioeconomic level A, B and C of Lima Metropolitana who seek to obtain pure water and reduce the environmental impact. The project extends in all phases that we had to go through to support our business proposal. Thus, it initially explains how our value proposition was developed, highlighting the main benefits of our product and how the different needs of our target audience will be met. Then, we present a series of experiments that had as their main purpose the validation of the business idea, for this we use advertising and marketing strategies on social networks to present the filters and give them exposure through all our channels of attention. At this stage of the work we developed how we had the first approach with our potential clients due to the interactions that occurred in those media. At the end of this point, we move on to the way we make the sales projections in order to sustain our profitability in the Market. Finalizing the estimation of revenue by filters and spare parts, we went on to develop the planning of strategies by administrative area, in which we present schedules of activities for each sector, in addition the budgets established by area over a horizon of three years.
