Abstract:
AbstractSilverleaf whitefly (SLW, Bemisia tabaci MEAM1) and aphids are sap-sucking insects, which pose a serious threat to Australian cucurbit crops and the horticulture industry. Traditional chemical control for these insect pests is becoming less effective, and there is a need to search for alternative or supplementary methods. This study aimed to manipulate the habitat of pumpkin crops in a tropical setting (Queensland, Australia), by growing pumpkins (var. Japanese pumpkin) alone and between lablab (Lablab purpureus L. Sweet). It was hypothesized that the presence of lablab will increase the populations of natural enemies, and through their control of insect pests such as SLW and aphids, will affect pumpkin yield. The population of arthropods (natural enemies and pests of pumpkin), with a focus on SLW and aphids, were sampled weekly on both lablab and pumpkin crop for a total of 21 weeks. Results showed that lablab hosted more enemies of SLW per plant than pumpkin in either treatment. In addition, adult SLW numbers were significantly higher in the pumpkin-only crop compared with the pumpkin grown between lablab, while pumpkin in the mixed plantings had significantly more ladybirds and lacewing larvae (P < 0.05). While there was no significant difference in the average fruit weight between treatments, the total weight (kg) and number of marketable pumpkins per hectare was greater (P < 0.05) for the pumpkin/lablab treatment than the pumpkin-only treatment. This study shows that growing lablab alongside a pumpkin crop may enhance natural enemies of SLW and could significantly increase the yield.

Abstract:
Conversion of agricultural residues into valuable products has become an important study in the industry. Generally, they are made up of lignocellulose biomass which requires a particular method such as pretreatment to enhance the desired yield to produce the end product. However, pumpkin is commercialized in very little way in Malaysia, and their processing generates tons of seeds and peels as byproducts. Not to mention the fact that pumpkin wastes have many beneficial nutrients and dry matter that can be utilized in many ways. Pumpkin peel is particularly rich in glucose content and can be converted through several main steps in bioethanol production; pretreatment, enzymatic saccharification, and fermentation which usually uses fungi to obtain fermentable sugar and followed by distillation. Furthermore, bioactive compounds such as carbohydrate, protein, minerals, fatty acid and a significant value on antioxidant compounds like tocopherol, phenols and carotenes are also found in pumpkin seed. On top of that, pumpkin seeds and peels contain quite an amount of pectin that can be extracted through acid hydrolysis and have great potential as gelling agents and thickeners in the food industry as an alternative source from the commercial pectin. These have proven that the usage of pumpkin residuals not only it can provide good benefits to human, in fact, various valuable products can be produced in a cheaper and sustainable way.

Abstract:
Pumpkin cultivar trials were held in 2003 and 2004 at the Agricultural Experiment Station Fayetteville, AR. 18 cultivars were direct seeded the 4th week of June. Plots 8 plants each, spaced 3 ft apart, 12 ft between rows were randomly replicated 6 times. Pumpkin fruit were harvested October 1 and evaluated for number, size shape, and quality. Plots were irrigated by drip irrigation and standard production practices were followed. During 2004 the same practices were followed except plots were planted during the second week of July. In 2003 large fruited pumpkins yielded 700 to 1950 fruit per acre. Howden, the industry standard yielded 700 fruit, averaging 16 lb each, with a gross return of $700/acre. Cultivar fruit size ranged from 15 to 27 lb, and yields ranged from 10200 to 52000 lbs to the acre. Based on the 1 Oct. 2003 prices from USDA AMS, gross returns ranged from $744 to $1760 per acre. Specialty types Jack be Quick, Rouge, and Long Island Cheese yielded 15700, 1800, and 1470 fruit per acre valued at $2100, 1950, and 3400 respectively. Excessive rain in June 2004, and cooler that normal weather during July and early August significantly affected quality and yields of pumpkin fruit. Fruit number and size per plot were reduced up to 75%. Yields ranged from 10% to 20% of 2003 yields. Fruit quality was significantly affected making most of the fruit harvest unmarketable due to immaturity and size.

Agricultural industries play a key role in promoting the economic prosperity and growth of Tongan society. Agricultural exports, such as the pumpkin industry, receive foreign exchange to pay for the imports. This project aims to develop an understanding of the problems involved in exporting pumpkins from Tonga to the Japanese rice market. It also aims, as an action research project, to increase the understanding of the problem owners in order to improve the operation of the industry. The inquiry explores the perceived problems and concerns of all parties involved in the development of the industry including the exporters, farmers, government departments and the Tongan Development Bank as well as the Japanese pumpkin importers. The study used a systems approach, utilising action research methodology as an entry point to conduct a collaborative inquiry. A market analysis of the niche market of the pumpkin industry was carried out.The following have been identified as the most important factors in the development of the industry. (1) It was found that low quality standard of pumpkin exports has been the main concern as it hinders the development of the niche market. (2) Insufficient government support services have also contributed to the low quality standard. Partly as a result of the action research project a strategic plan for the industry was developed and this has already led to changes in industry practices.

Oosthuizen, Nicolas Laurens. "Optimum water distribution between pumping stations of multiple mine shafts / Nicolas Laurens Oosthuizen." Thesis, North-West University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/9189.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2011 the mining industry purchased 14.5% of the electrical energy generated by Eskom. During 2011 in South Africa, dewatering pump systems on gold mines were the fourth largest electrical energy consumer on South African mines therefor making dewatering pumps ideal candidates to generate significant financial savings. These savings can be realised by controlling time-of-use (TOU) schedules. Previous studies concentrated on the impact of improving a pumping scheme of a single mineshaft. This dissertation will focus on the operations of a complete dewatering system consisting of multiple mineshafts. The case study will consist of a gold mine complex comprising of five different shafts - each with its own reticulation system – as well as the larger interconnected water reticulation system. Various pumping options were investigated, simulated and verified. The interaction between shafts was determined when load-shifting was scheduled for all the shafts taking each shaft’s particular infrastructure into account. The underground dewatering system was automated and optimised based on the simulation results. Mine safety protocols were adhered to while optimal pump operational schedules were introduced.

Den, Boef Martinus. "Assessment of the national DSM potential in mine underground services / M. den Boef." Thesis, North-West University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/111.

Full text
Abstract:
ESKOM is moving towards a price structure for electricity which reflects, as far as possible, the real cost of generation. It is called real time pricing (RTP). ESKOM developed this cost structure to coax customers to use more electricity in off-peak periods (low cost of generation) and less electricity in peak periods (high cost of generation). However, many industries do not effectively use these price offerings from ESKOM to the detriment of themselves and ESKOM. In previous research improvements to this situation for the South African mining industry were investigated. ESKOM funded research to find the potential for load shifting on mines using RTP. The RTP investigation focused on the supply side management (SSM) in the mining context of underground services on gold and platinum mines. Elements investigated included the ventilation, cooling and pumping (VCP) systems. (Except for pumps, these plants are generally installed aboveground.) Previous research showed a national RTP and SSM potential to shift 500 MW of electrical load for a period of 5 hours. Through the previous research it became clear that the mines were previously able to react partially to the price signals. However, it was proved by the research that the full load shift potential can only be realised through the use of integrated dynamic simulation and optimisation. An even higher potential exists for load shift and electricity efficiency through demand side management (DSM) on the underground services. Therefore, if underground DSM strategies are combined with SSM strategies, a further and much bigger potential can be exploited to the benefit of ESKOM and the mines. Due to these factors this study was undertaken. Three case study mines were identified for this study. They are Kopanang and Target, both gold mines, and Amandelbult, a platinum mine. The DSM potential on each of these mines was calculated using simulation, calibration, verification and optimisation. These results were presented to mine management to negotiate the implementation of the proposed strategies on one of the mines. Kopanang's management agreed to the implementation of these strategies for a trial period of 3 months after which the success would be evaluated. The results of the implementation, together with the case study results, were used to calculate the national DSM potential in the mining sector through extrapolation. The DSM potential amounts to 650 MW of load per day as well as 5% on electricity consumption. This amounts to a potential saving of R72.1 million per year using current tariffs. This means that ESKOM can save about R5000 million on the building of a new power station to supply the equivalent load to the DSM potential. Now that the national impact has been calculated and discussed, all these findings must be used to motivate the implementation of these strategies throughout the mining sector. A similar project can be undertaken to look at possible DSM strategies in the industrial sector. This might prove to be more difficult as the electricity intensive systems are mostly all linked to the final production. In the mind of management this out-weighs the possible cost savings that can be achieved. ESKOM and the NER will have to rethink their strategy. Through DSM and load shifting actions alone the pending electricity crisis will not be averted. The current tariff structures should be amended to not only reflect the true cost of electricity but also provide incentive for DSM and load shifting. Another problem that must be addressed to achieve the DSM targets set for 2007 is the time that it takes to complete the study as well as the implementation time. Software can easily be created to help in the speeding up of the case study itself, as the process and steps followed, as well as models used, are very generic (at least in the gold and platinum mining sector).

Parbhoo, Meeshal. "A cost study comparing imported liquid pumps against locally manufactured pumps." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/10816.

Full text
Abstract:
M.Ing. (Engineering Management)
The purpose of this dissertation was to compare the local manufacturing of liquid pumps in South Africa against the importation of pumps manufactured on the international markets as well as also investigate the capacity limitations of the local pump manufacturers; the technologies available on overseas markets (in terms of electric, solar and wind-powered liquid pumps) and comparing the technologies to those available in South Africa. Five of the leading pump manufacturers were researched in this dissertation namely: KSB; Grundfos; Howden Pumps; Sulzer Pumps Africa and Warman Pumps. South African pump manufacturers are importing most of their pumps from international markets with the primary reason being to meet demands. By comparison, South African pump manufacturers are finding it difficult to produce pumps with equivalent or lower costs than the pumps which are produced on the international markets. Pump manufacturers on international markets offer greater cost savings for South African pump manufacturers which ultimately results in financial savings and a higher yield in profits. Many international pump manufacturers use advanced technology which makes the production costs of pump components as much as twenty percent (20%) less as compared to the South African pump industry. The importation of pumps is a method used to increase the local supply of pumps as the cost of the pump, including import costs, are not as costly as actually manufacturing the pumps in South Africa. While South African pump manufacturers manufacture pumps of relatively high energy consumption and monetary costs; they also produce standard conventional pumps which are required to supply the local demand. Local pump manufacturers were approached to find out exactly how they cope with these stringent requirements by the South African markets, yet still achieve the profits in the industry to remain afloat. Various pump forms were researched specifically relating to the pumps used on the South African markets with regards to their production costs, advantages and disadvantages (wind and solar pump technologies). Standard conventional pumps are preferred on local markets by as much as fifteen percent (15%) with newer technologies (solar and wind powered pumps) being preferred on the international markets. South Africa continues to demand standard conventional pumps (electric-driven pump) although demands for newer technology is on the increase. The international market’s production lines are mature and well established which results in a lower cost of production which leads to these pumps being of more demand as compared to newer pumps which are currently the preference. Local pump manufacturers can satisfy the demand and benefit from the lower importation cost of standard conventional pumps. The preliminary results suggest that the importing of pumps from international markets aid local manufacturers in keeping up with the demand and accquiring sufficient profits. Modern technologies such as solar and wind power is a growing maket in South Africa and is becoming increasingly common. The research approach used in this study involved targeting five of the local pump manufacturers in South Africa. Each manufacturer was asked a series of questions relating to the research questions in order to draw up conclusions regarding the problem statement and hypothesis. Findings from the conducted surveys were compared to the literature which is currently published. Findings show that local pump manufacturers are dependent on imports in order to satisfy the demand for standard conventional pumps rather than manufacturing their own and the use of newer technologies are increasing in the local pump industry.

Abstract:
This chapter addresses the so-called Industry 4.0 and some of its applications in industrial pumps, seeking to emphasize its characteristics and benefits. The introduction of 4.0 industry technologies in this traditional industry can cause profound changes in existing business models, providing greater customer satisfaction, either improving the effectiveness of equipment operation, contributing to better adjustment to working conditions, and also prolonging their life cycle. We are still in the early stages of these technologies and a lot is yet to evolve; however, there are already interesting examples developed by some pump manufacturers around the world, some of which will be mentioned in this chapter. It is subdivided into three main parts, namely brief historical panorama from the first industrial revolution to Industry 4.0, current applications in the industrial pump industry, and finally, future research directions and conclusion.

Abstract:
Liquidity Risk Management (LRM) in the banking industry happens at two levels: (1) the Central Bank (i.e. the regulator) and (2) the commercial banks. The term “liquidity” for the Central Bank means the monetary base consisting of the currency and the reserves in the banking system. These are the supply side of the interest rate market. The Central Bank being the only supplier of the same can target the interest rates by varying supply of monetary base and vice versa. There are several ways including auctioning and redeeming the government securities for squeezing and pumping liquidity into the system. However, before such recourse, the Central Bank needs an assessment of the liquidity requirement of the system and applies the forecasting techniques, which are mostly econometric by nature involving the time series data. This chapter explores this process.

Abstract:
Traditional irrigation systems do not take into consideration the conservation of water. Therefore, automating the plant watering systems to reduce water wastage and loss would be key to water conservation as a means of making use of water wisely and responsibly. In this chapter, a smart irrigation system that helps control the amount of water applied to crops is proposed and developed. The system controls the ON/OFF state of the water pumping motor based on the soil moisture sensor reading. Other sensors incorporated in the system are the water level sensor and light dependent resistor. The system leverages on the Arduino Uno microcontroller development board to collect input signals from the three sensors. The water pump operates depending on the value of the output signal received by the relay module. This technique of watering is feasible and very affordable and reduces human intervention in field watering.

Abstract:
This chapter illustrates how civic projects articulated national ambitions. The United States needed technologies to develop industry, transport American-made products, and protect the health and homes of urban citizens. But it was the way Americans chose to promote inventions, devices, and civic constructions that put national aspirations into public conversation. Although the Erie Canal was the most prominent public works project in the early nineteenth century, water systems undertaken in American cities between the 1810s and 1850s were the most tangible evidence of civic development. Celebrated as representations of America's place among the nations of the world, the magnitude of these projects made them tourist attractions. Lithographs, paintings, sculpture, and music depicted these achievements. Moreover, the brick-and-mortar constructions visually articulated empirical ambitions through their design and embellishment. Reservoirs, pumping stations, and fountains incorporated references to ancient empires and communicated Americans' conception of nationhood with an easily understood visual rhetoric.

Abstract:
The new ORC-VCC combined system is analyzed. It is a new system that can be operated in four modes depending on the type of energy. The novelty of the system appears essentially in the development of new ORC-VCC combination architecture, the lowering of the condensation temperature, the possibility of cold production by the ORC cycle affected by the pumping phase, preheating of fluid cycle using the VCC cycle fluid, and new configurations based on the integration of heat recovery systems to improve overall system performance. In addition, each installation mode has several configurations depending on the recovery points that will be integrated later, besides its adaptation to any energy source, where we can use biomass, solar, and heat rejects of industry at low temperatures (60–130°C). This system can produce under and above zero temperature. Although, due to its architecture, it is also characterized by many combination of selection fluid for the ORC and VCC cycles, it is not necessary to have the same working fluid as in the classic systems. In this study, three configurations are examined and studied in terms of energy efficiency mainly the performance of each configuration including net power, refrigeration capacity and overall efficiency, the thermal efficiency for ORC.

Abstract:
As discussed in Chapter 4 and illustrated in Figure 4.1, close to 50% of the solar energy intercepted by the Earth is absorbed at the surface. Approximately half of this energy, 78 W m– 2, is used to evaporate water, mainly from the ocean. What this means is that evaporation of water accounts for as much as a third of the total solar energy absorbed by the Earth (atmosphere plus surface). The atmosphere has a limited ability to retain this water. Evaporation is balanced in close to real time by precipitation. A portion of this precipitation reaches the surface in regions elevated with respect to sea level— in mountainous locations, for example. It is endowed in this case with what we refer to as potential energy (Chapter 4). This potential energy can be stored (in lakes or dams, for instance), or it can be released, converted to kinetic energy (directed motion) as the water flows downhill on its return to the ocean. And along the way, energy can be captured and channeled to perform useful work. An early application involved exploiting the power of running water to turn a flat stone, one of two that constituted the apparatus used to grind grain, the other remaining stationary during the grinding process. The Domesday Book records that by AD 1086 as many as 5,624 water mills were operational in England south of the River Trent, deployed not just to grind grain but for a multitude of other tasks, including, but not confined to, sawing wood, crushing ore, and pumping the bellows of industrial furnaces (Derry and Williams 1960). Later, running water would provide the motive force for the textile industry that marked the beginning of the industrial age in North America, specifically in New England (Steinberg 1991; McElroy 2010). The most important contemporary application of water power involves the generation of electricity, the bulk of which is obtained by tapping the potential energy stored in high- altitude dams, a lesser fraction from the kinetic energy supplied by free- flowing streams (what is referred to as run- of- the- river sources).

Abstract:
Abstract 3D printing enables the production of personalized designs that are desirable in the medical industry for applications including orthopedics, tissue engineering, and personalized nutrition. Currently, the design process relies on trial-and-error approaches, especially for biomaterial development, and there is a need for methodologies to streamline the design process to facilitate automation. Here, we investigate a design methodology for printing foods by mixing novel biomaterial combinations informed by rheological measurements that indicate printability. The process consists of first printing basic designs with chocolate, marzipan, and potato biomaterials known to print consistently. Rheological measurements are collected for these materials and compared to a novel pumpkin biomaterial. The pumpkin had a higher complex modulus and lower mechanical loss tangent than all other biomaterials, therefore motivating the addition of rheological agents to reach more favorable properties. Varied concentrations of corn starch and guar gum were added to the pumpkin to improve printability while altering the nutrient distribution. A 4% inclusion of guar gum provided the most consistent pumpkin prints. A complex 3D object was fabricated with the 4% guar gum pumpkin material, therefore demonstrating the merits in using rheological properties to inform printability for use in design automation routines. The design approach enabled comparisons of relative nutrition and printability trade-offs to demonstrate a proof-of-concept user interface for design automation to facilitate customized food production. Further research to develop a complete design methodology for linking rheological properties to printability would promote consistent prediction of print quality for novel formulations to support design automation, with potential generalizability for diverse biomaterials.
