Abstract:
Abstract. Kampai Island’s past traces include the abundant varied glass beads. Was such abundant glass beads reflects certain conditions on ancient Kampai Island? Such richness in number and variety have triggered a number of researches on their quantity and morphology which provide some information of categorization and trade fluctuation in the ancient Kampai Island. The factors contributing to the rise and fall of the island are explained through the analogy of local or international historical sources. Kampai’s heyday through AD 11 to the middle of AD 14 centuries was among others due to demand on Sumatera’s natural resources by the Chinese market since the Tang Dynasty’s period; on the other hand, the Ming Dynasty’s AD 15 century inter-ocean private trade quota limitation contributed to the decline of such resources demand. The declining demand finally brought Kampai’s commerce to collapse at AD 16 century when other Sumatera’s ports began to export Aru’s commodity.

Abstract:
Mainland serow are in decline in Southeast Asia with poaching for illegal trade being a major driver. In Indonesia, where this species is found only on the island of Sumatra, the illegal wildlife trade is widespread and impacts numerous species and it is therefore not surprising to find serow in trade. Using seizure and prosecution data from 2014 to 2021, a total of 13 seizure records were obtained, involving an estimated minimum of 32 mainland serow (Capricornis sumatraensis). While legislation is in place in Indonesia to protect serow from poaching and illegal trade, meaningful penalties are seldom handed down. In an absence of effective deterrents, illegal trade will continue to be a threat to the conservation of this species.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Physical Sciences))--Peninsula Technikon, Cape Town, 1999.
Wet deposition of toxic trace metals is the dominant mode of deposition in terrestrial ecosystems and contributes very significantly to their pollution burden. Wet deposited metals are dissolved in rainwater. They reach the vegatation in a form most favourable for uptake. Reliable analysis of toxic trace metals in rainwater is important in order to determine the impact they make on the environment. In this study, trace metals in rainwater and in dry deposition (as a control measure), have been analysed over a period of a year. These metals include cadmium, copper, cobalt, lead, nickel and zinc. The rainwater was filtered, acidified to pH2 and irradiated with UV-light. Dry deposition samples, were digested by heating in nitric acid before analysis. Differential-pulse anodic stripping voltammetry was used to determine cadmium, lead and zinc. Copper was determined by adsorptive cathodic stripping at pH7 after complexation with catechol. Cobalt and nickel were measured at pH9 by adsorptive cathodic stripping after formation of their dimethylglyoximes. Sampling was done on a daily basis from April 1996 to March 1997, on the campus of the Peninsula Technikon. The samples were collected over a 24-hour period. The total average concentration for the metals was 16.11 flg/dm3 for rainwater and 427flg/dm3 for dry deposition. Meteorological factors such as wind speed, humidity and temperature affect the distribution of pollutants and thus the trace metal levels. The levels of the metallic pollutants were thus evaluated against meteorological data. Differential-pulse stripping voltammetry is shown to be applicable for heavy metal analysis of rainwater.

This thesis demonstrates novel nanoscale analytical platforms for the selective and sensitive detection of biomolecules for pharmaceutical, environmental and biomedical applications. The new platforms comprised functionalized nanomaterials, disposable sensors and portable detectors for the combined Raman and electrochemical determination of biomolecules. The new nanosensing methodology utilizes the thiol chemistry of biomolecules for their label-free detection by SERS and DPV. Therefore, it can be applied to numerous biomolecules that have disulfide bonds structure. In terms of sensitivity, sample processing, analysis time and cost, the new methodology has significant advantages over the other current techniques such as chromatography and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Abstract:
Background: We compared the accuracy and precision of estimation of the systolic blood pressure (SBP) by disappearance of the pulse oximeter trace (DOT), with noninvasive blood pressure (NIBP) measurement, across the range of body mass index (BMI), during spinal anaesthesia (SA) for caesarean section (CS). Methods: Three groups of 25 parturients were recruited, with BMI of < 30- (Group 1), 30-40- (Group 2), and > 40 kg/m2 (Group 3) respectively. SBP was measured using the DASH® 3000 monitor (GE Health Care, UK) NIBP monitor, placed on the same arm as the pulse oximeter probe. Estimations of SBP were done before- and 5 minutes after induction of SA, during cuff inflation and deflation. The times taken for the estimations and the actual NIBP measurements were noted. Bland and Altman analysis was performed and the correlation coefficient estimated. Results: Concerning the most clinically relevant estimation, namely SBP during inflation post-SA: For Groups 1, 2 and 3, r = 0.56, 0.74 and 0.91; bias = -0.4, -2.9 and 0.8 mmHg, and limits of agreement = -27.7 to 26.9, -27.7 to 21.9 and -15.9 to 17.5 mmHg respectively. The mean (SD) time required for estimation of the SBP during inflation post- SA was 7.5 (1.1) s, 11.8 (3.8) s and 16.8 (4.2) s in the Groups 1, 2 and 3 respectively. The mean (SD) time required for measurement of post-SA SBP during inflations in Groups 1, 2 and 3, was 30.3 (13.1) s, 41.3 (10.2) s and 49.8 (14.6) respectively. In the post-SA period, mean time saved by estimating SBP during inflation was approximately 28.5 seconds, compared with 9 seconds during deflation. The time saved in Groups 1, 2 and 3 was 22.8 (13.2) s, 30.0 (11.6) s and 33.0 (15.6) s respectively. In the BMI > 40 kg/m2 group, the percentage error is ±13% of the mean systolic blood pressure observed, and the absolute error is ±16 mmHg, compared to ±27 mmHg in the normal BMI group. Conclusion: Post-SA estimation of SBP during cuff inflation in morbidly obese patients is more accurate and precise than in the other BMI Groups. Time to estimation is shorter than measurement by a clinically relevant period (33 s). This should improve patient safety in morbidly obese parturients.

Abstract:
In underwater tracking and surveillance, the active towed array sonar presents a way of discovering and tracking adversarial submerged targets that try to stay hidden. The configuration consist of listening and emitting hydrophones towed behind a ship. Moreover, it has inherent limitations, and the characteristics of sound in the ocean are complex. By varying the pulse form emitted and the trajectory of the ship the measurement accuracy may be improved. This type of optimization constitutes a sensor management problem. In this thesis, a model of the tracking scenario has been constructed derived from Cramér-Rao bound analyses. A model predictive control approach together with information measures have been used to optimize a filter's estimated state of the target. For the simulations, the MATLAB environment has been used. Different combinations of decision horizons, information measures and variations of the Kalman filter have been studied. It has been found that the accuracy of the Extended Kalman filter is too low to give consistent results given the studied information measures. However, the Unscented Kalman filter is sufficient for this purpose.

A two-step preconcentration procedure is proposed to be used in conjuction with differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry for the determination of tracer metals in seawater. The two-step preconcentration involves extraction of trace metals from seawater with L,L-ethyl- enedicysteine diethylester (ECD) into chloroform followed by backextraction with a Hg(Ⅱ) solution. The extraction could concentration the trace metals by forming a chelate with ECD with a high enrichment factor obtained with the large phase volume ratio. The aqueous solution containing simply the enriched metals and some of the nonreacted Hg (Ⅱ) was taken for differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) using a glassy carbon electrode.Anodic stripping voltammetry of the metals such as Zn,Cd,Pb and Cu were done directly in the backextraction solution, i.e. , Hg(Ⅱ). It should be worthwhile to note that the Hg(Ⅱ) solution used as the backextraction agent does not cause any interference in the anodic stripping voltammetry. Be- sides, the Hg(Ⅱ) can be used in situ as the source of mer- cury film to be coated on the glassy carbon electrode,ren- dering it as effective working electrode for DPASV.

The interactive action with the digital is daily. However, few thoughts on the subject highlight the importance of the trace in this relationship which links us to the machine. Often, an interactive experience generates a trace and it is from this important element that we are thinking, in this master’s thesis, on the relationship with our interactive digital environment. The trace is then understood as a new epistemological approach to interactive digital arts. To think the digital as immaterial generates an almost non-existent of the trace within a digital work, involving a mystification. Throughout this research, our goal is to give back materiality to this trace, so that it can fit into our landscape called material. The work Pulse Room (2006) by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer will enable us to reflect on the ambivalences and convergences that exists in the approach of a computerized society in front of the digital machine, and understand how we evaluate the trace that is left behind each of our digital performances. It's only when the digital trace will incorporate a certain materiality, that we will be able to see ourselves as an object of reflection, to discern how we behave facing this environment and learn to be critical.

Digestion of animal and plant tissues by 5.0 ml, 10.0 ml or 20.0 ml of $\rm H\sb2SO\sb4$ (95.0-98%)/HNO$\sb3$ (69-71%) (v/v) (1:1) acid mixture were effectively achieved by pulse microwave treatment using domestic grade microwave oven. Samples are subjected to 10s (method A) or 6s (method B) microwave heating followed by dormant time of 3 minutes for a total microwave heating time of less than 20 minutes. Data will be presented to show how conditions were chosen. The temperature of digestion mixture was maintained $<$100$\sp\circ$C. The effect of pulse time variation and acid mixture volume variation was studied in detail.

Abstract:
The estimation of arterial oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry and arterial carbon dioxide tension by capnography are vital monitoring techniques in critical care medicine, particularly during intubation, ventilation and transport. Equivalent continuous information is not otherwise available. It is important to understand the principles of measurement and limitations, for safe use and error detection. PETCO2 and oxygen saturation should be regularly checked against PaCO2 and co-oximeter SO2 obtained from the blood gas machine. The PECO2 trace informs endotracheal tube placement, ventilation, and blood flow to the lungs. It is essential their principles of estimation, the information gained and the traps in interpretation are understood.

Abstract:
Sing, play, move, create, and experience joy with living musical traditions from Guatemala and Nicaragua. Suitable for use in families, schools, or community centers, this resource contains a playful collection of 90 songs, singing games, chants, and games the author learned from teachers, children, and families while living in several communities in both countries. While the majority of the songs are in Spanish, a few in a Mayan language, Kaqchikel, are included. Field videos, audio recordings, and select song histories are available on the companion website to witness the music in authentic contexts, guide in pronunciation, and trace musical origins. Ethnographic descriptions of locations where songs were learned and personal biographies of a few singers written in Kaqchikel or Spanish and translated to English allow the reader to develop a connection to the land and the musicians. Culturally responsive and sustaining teaching pedagogies are discussed alongside strategies to responsibly include the music in school curriculums. A brief history of Central America and an overview of music genres in the region are included to frame this song collection within historic, cultural, and musical contexts. ¡Ven a cantar y jugar! Come sing and play! The song pages are playfully and thoughtfully illustrated by Sucely Puluc from Guatemala.
