Beaton, Angela Ann. "Publishing Public History: Publishing Options for Small Organizations." Thesis, North Dakota State University, 2019. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/31545.

Abstract:
Publishing books and catalogs has long been the domain of large museums and historical societies that have an equally large budget. While large organizations can commit vast amounts of time and resources to publishing, many small organizations cannot. Before recent technological advances, small museums and local history organizations were unable to participate in the publishing of books and catalogs easily. However, today, there are several viable options for these organizations to begin publishing. This research aims to highlight the ways that small organizations in the Upper Midwest have been utilizing technological advances and strategic partnerships to publish. Using these tools and partnerships, independently published books, catalogs, and other publications can be academically sound, including peer review, while also being affordable and easily created.

Alzahrani, J. A. H. "Perceived barriers to research publishing in Saudi Arabia and the potential for electronic publishing." Thesis, University of Salford, 2011. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/26548/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focuses on the academic publication processes in Saudi Arabia, the barriers that affect researchers' ability to carry out and publish research and the potential advantages and disadvantages offered by the Internet in the area of academic publishing. It addresses the readiness of researchers to adopt innovative approaches to publication including those based on electronic media. There are potential problems faced by researchers wishing to publish; these include length of time required to publish, low publication numbers, referees' demands and conditions, mailing difficulties, lack of communication between researchers and journals, delays in researchers' addressing the reviewers' amendments, the weaknesses of financial support, the cost of using and publishing articles, weaknesses in the distribution of academic journals, their limited international spread because of the use of the Arabic language more than other languages, delays in the printing of research because of the low capability of Universities' printing houses, (resulting from a lack of human and machinery resources), and finally the limited numbers of academic journals written in Arabic. In the view of the author, given that publication of papers and distribution of knowledge through the Internet is faster, more efficient and more effective than the traditional approach; many of the current procedures could be improved through the use of this medium. The data collection and analysis presented in this study addresses the extent to which such benefit could be realised in practice. This research reviews the limitations of research publishing in Saudi Arabia by focusing on the nature of academic journals, in terms of their numbers and purpose, the barriers that academic staff faced when they wished to publish their research work in local or international academic journals, and the attitudes of academics towards electronic publishing and publishing in general. The research comprises interviews, case studies, and questionnaire methods. The most prominent findings from this study are the lack of encouragement for academic staff to conduct and publish research, lack of financial support to the research publishing sector, lack of a research publishing infrastructure and a lack of private sector support for funding research and publishing. An interesting finding is that unlike many other countries, there is no culture of volunteering for work that does not provide direct financial benefit. This could be an important factor affecting the adoption of an online open publishing approach in which reviewers and editors are not paid directly for the work. This research leads to recommendations aimed at giving more focus to academic staff, the application of some regulations and incentives to encourage increased academic research and publishing, increasing the financial support to the research publishing sector, to automate the research publishing process, discarding some unnecessary elements of the process, encouraging and rewarding voluntary work in supporting research publishing, and encouraging the private sector to improve and support academic research in general and research publishing specifically. In conclusion, this study focuses on the academic publication process; the potential advantages and disadvantages offered by the Internet, and the attitudes of scholars towards electronic publishing. This research ultimately aims at proposing and implementing suitable processes and policies to solve these problems and to identifying means of overcoming the research publishing barriers in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract:
Many academic decision makers rely on quantified ranking measures to estimate the quality of journal publications. The aim of this study was to map journals in Information Systems (IS) with regard to their topic and their rank and determine whether there is a relationship between the scope of a journal and its rank. The study used content analysis, applying both qualitative and quantitative methods. The results of the analysis show the existence of relationships between the journal rank, the research area, and the type as well as significant differences in ranking on the three lists. The findings illustrate that ranking measures, as indicators for the quality of research published in a journal ought to be considered only in the context of a particular research area and scientific community.

Karnchanachari, Karnitha. "Commercial book publishing in Thailand." Thesis, Loughborough University, 1990. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7040.

Full text
Abstract:
The present study involves the gathering of data and information on book publishing in Thailand and an attempt to systematically develop a data base on the book publishing industry. The research gives emphasis to the private sector which has recently been encouraged by the government to play a leading role in national development. Critical analysis of the findings serves as a basis for recommendations to promote and develop commercial book publishing. Almost all commercial book publishers in Thailand are based in the capital city of Bangkok. Regardless of the seemingly continuing emergence and disappearance of publishing houses, the number of publishers have been steadily increasing through the years. The newly established enterprises tend to be non-family business and could successfully compete in the market, gradually catching up with the older establishments. Most publishers are faced with problems relating to manuscripts, either quantitatively or qualitatively or both. The current general business practice is informal having no written agreement between publisher and author. It is an exception rather than a rule that books are edited by professional editors. Distribution remains a major issue in the development of the publishing industry. Consequently, publishers tend to carry out their own distribution as soon as it becomes economically feasible. It is noted that Thai women are active in book publishing with the average rate of female employment among the majority of publishers under study being slightly more than half of the total employment. Statistics on book production during the past two decades show an overall increase of more than 600 percent. Commercial publishers play an important role in the book publishing industry with commercial book production accounting for half or more of the total number of titles published, gradually increasing from slightly over 50 percent in 1981 to over 70 percent in 1986. The annual trade value is over 3,000 million bahts (US$ 124 million), with no less than 20,000 titles in circulation. The survey indicates average spending on books is less than 1 percent of earning. There appears to be a significant correlation between the GNP per capita and book production. The study reveals that in 1986 there was one book for every 2 to 3 people compared to one book for every 4 to 5 in 1977. The publishing industry has been serving mainly the local market and, as such, is significantly affected by government policy and planning. The National Library of Thailand and the Book Development Centre are the two major national organizations promoting book development in addition to the relevant professional associations. In anticipation of increasing potential market for commercial book, certain major recommendations are proposed to further develop the book publishing industry. These include: 1) Strengthening of the national machinery and professional organizations. 2) Systematic collection and publication of national statistics on book production. 3) Promotion of professional editorial in book publishing.

Full text
Abstract:
This work is concerned with the increasing relationships between two distinct multidisciplinary research fields, Semantic Web technologies and scholarly publishing, that in this context converge into one precise research topic: Semantic Publishing. In the spirit of the original aim of Semantic Publishing, i.e. the improvement of scientific communication by means of semantic technologies, this thesis proposes theories, formalisms and applications for opening up semantic publishing to an effective interaction between scholarly documents (e.g., journal articles) and their related semantic and formal descriptions. In fact, the main aim of this work is to increase the users' comprehension of documents and to allow document enrichment, discovery and linkage to document-related resources and contexts, such as other articles and raw scientific data. In order to achieve these goals, this thesis investigates and proposes solutions for three of the main issues that semantic publishing promises to address, namely: the need of tools for linking document text to a formal representation of its meaning, the lack of complete metadata schemas for describing documents according to the publishing vocabulary, and absence of effective user interfaces for easily acting on semantic publishing models and theories.

Abstract:
This thesis presents the findings and conclusions of research that was undertaken with the purpose of understanding the issues and challenges of e-transformation in the publishing industry, particularly the editorial phase, and in a government controlled environment of Malaysia. The research followed an exploratory inquiry and a case study approach, was conducted in a publishing house in Kuala Lumpur. This study was based upon data collected through in depth interview with 18 editors, documentary research (manuals, house styles, General Orders of the Government of Malaysia, forms, correspondence, other in house documents, speeches and local news), physical artefacts (132 edited manuscripts involving 33 editors), archival records (project files spanning 2 years of published works) and literature research. 10 major issues were identified and grouped into 4 categories, 4 major issues from previous failed systems identified, 9 major impacts categorised into 3 different categories were identified and 7 recommendations from the editors were identified for future systems. Focusing on these issues and impacts, several measures were recommended that would improve e-transformation in the company. Guidelines were developed to streamline the transformation and a new workflow proposed towards efficiency in a new medium. Disruption is also identified in the process of transformation. The research concludes by describing the phenomena of transformation in the editorial phase, that there are issues, impacts, disruption and unsettling points before, during and after transformation that would need to be thoroughly investigated, understood and addressed, to successfully transform the editorial phase. The research contributes to both theory and practice. It also proposed a conceptual model to understand the transformation particularly in a public sector; it developed a guideline for effective transformation and developed a workflow for the editorial phase.

In recent years, we witnessed a huge growth of multimedia data on the Web. New lower-cost technologies and greater bandwidth allowed the Web to evolve into a multimedia format. However, the lack of tools that can make multimedia format easily accessible on the Web led us to a non-searchable and non-indexable data of the Web, also known as Deep Web. In line with these observations, this dissertation addresses the problem of how to publish audio and video content on the Web. We present a tool and a novel approach that facilitates the indexing and retrieval of the objects with the help of traditional search engines. The tool automatically generates static Web pages that describe the content of the objects and organize this content to facilitate locating segments of the audio or video which correspond to the descriptions. The static Web pages can be translated to others languages to reach other user populations. An annotation process is also performed to embed machine-readable data into the Web pages. The dissertation also presents an in-depth experiment, publishing learning objects based on audio and video, to assess the efficacy of the technique.

Paphawasit, Boontarika. "Cooperation and discrimination in academic publishing." Thesis, Brunel University, 2017. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/15269.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis consists of four essays in collaboration and discrimination. The first essay examines the role of collaboration as a determinant of publication productivity in the field of economics, measured by means of citations, journal rank, and journal impact factor. The analysis employs cross-sectional data of 1,512 journal publications published in 2012 in 16 economics journals. The findings show a positive effect of team size on publication productivity, whereas research teams consisting of only one gender perform better in terms of research quality than gender-mixed teams. The analysis also indicates a negative relationship between female-dominated teams and research productivity. The second essay examines the impact of physical attractiveness on productivity. As literature found a strong impact on wages and career progression, it can be either due to discrimination in favour of good-looking people or can reflect an association between attractiveness and productivity. We utilise a context of academic publishing where there is no or limited face-to-face interaction. Using data on 2,800 authors, the results suggest that physical attractiveness has significantly important benefits. The third essay also considers the effect of physical attractiveness, as assessed based on pictures of top scientists, on their probability of winning the Nobel Prize. In contrast, the results show that attractiveness is negatively correlated with the probability of being awarded the Nobel, with the magnitude of this effect being not negligible. The fourth essay analyses the subsequent publication success (i.e., the probability to publish in top journals, the publication productivity) of the contenders in a best paper prize awarded at an academic conference to see whether the winners' papers fare better than those that failed to get the prize, measured by rank and impact factor of the journal, and citations. We employ the data of nominees for the Distinguished CESifo Affiliate prize between 2008 and 2015. The findings indicate that winning has a positive effect on the quality of journals they published as well as the publication productivity, suggesting that scholars who succeed in their early stage of academia tend to success later compared to those who are not outstanding. This thesis contributes to the literature on publication productivity and discrimination in academia by extending the existing literature on these issues. In this context, we explore the determinants of research productivity in economics (e.g., gender, nationality, seniority and others) and how those characteristics impact on productivity. We also investigate the role of beauty, and the presence of appearance-based discrimination, in determining research productivity among mainstream academics. We then re-examine the role of physical attractiveness at the top of the distribution of productivity, among Nobel Prize candidates/winners. Finally, we examine inequality in scientific research outcomes and the role of the so-called Matthew Effect. The findings shed light on the issues of collaboration, discrimination and inequality in academia.

Abstract:
Driven by mutual benefits, exchange and publication of data among various parties is an inevitable trend. However, released data often contains sensitive information thus direct publication violates individual privacy. This undertaking is in the scope of privacy preserving data publishing (PPDP). Among many privacy models, K- anonymity framework is popular and well-studied, it protects data by constructing groups of anonymous records such that each record in the table released is covered by no fewer than k-1 other records. This thesis investigates different privacy models and focus on achieving k-anonymity for large scale and sparse databases, especially recommender systems. We present a general process for anonymization of large scale database. A preprocessing phase strategically extracts preference matrix from original data by Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) eliminates the high dimensionality and sparsity problem. A new clustering based k-anonymity heuristic named Bisecting K-Gather (BKG) is invented and proved to be efficient and accurate. To support customized user privacy assignments, we also proposed a new concept called customized k-anonymity along with a corresponding algorithm. Experiments on MovieLens database are assessed and also presented. The results show we can release anonymized data with low compromising privacy.

Yarovoy, Roman. "Privacy-preserving publishing of moving objects databases." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/7154.

Full text
Abstract:
Moving Objects Databases (MOD) have gained popularity as a subject for research due to the latest developments in the positioning technologies and mobile networking. Analysis of mobility data can be used to discover and deliver knowledge that can enhance public welfare. For instance, a study of traffic patterns and congestion trends can reveal some information that can be used to improve routing and scheduling of public transit vehicles. To enable analysis of mobility data, a MOD must be published. However, publication of MOD can pose a threat to location privacy of users, whose movement is recorded in the database. A user's location at one or more time points can be publicly available prior to the publication of MOD. Based on this public knowledge, an attacker can potentially find the user's entire trajectory and learn his/her positions at other time points, which constitutes privacy breach. This public knowledge is a user's quasi-identifier (QID), i.e. a set of attributes that can uniquely identify the user's trajectory in the published database. We argue that unlike in relational microdata, where all tuples have the same set of quasi-identifiers, in mobility data, the concept of quasi-identifier must be modeled subjectively on an individual basis. In this work, we study the problem of privacy preserving publication of MOD. We conjecture that each Moving Object (MOB) may have a distinct QID. We develop a possible attack model on the published MOD given public knowledge of some or all MOBs. We develop k-anonymity model (based on classical k-anonymity), which ensures that every object is indistinguishable (with respect to its QID) from at least k-1 other objects, and show that this model is impervious to the proposed attack model. We employ space generalization to achieve MOB anonymity. We propose three anonymization algorithms that generate a MOD that satisfies the k-anonymity model, while minimizing the information loss. We conduct several sets of experiments on synthetic and real-world data sets of vehicular traffic to analyze and evaluate our proposed algorithms.

Zhao, Lingyun. "The publishing of youth-literature in China." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/46288.

Full text
Abstract:
The publishing of youth-literature in China, which is defined as literature written by and for youths aged 14 to 20, emerged at the beginning of the twenty-first century and quickly became a large scale phenomenon. Over the last decade, it has continued to grow and expand. This study traces the publication of one particular book by drawing on the author???s first hand experience and, more importantly, reveals the inner mechanisms and external social and cultural elements that have shaped this trend in Chinese publishing through careful examination of the publishing histories of two leading youth writers. The author argues that several major elements worked together to make this phenonemon extraordinarily successful: state-owned and private publishers pursuing profit; rebellious or material-oriented youth writers pursuing success; and China???s first only-child generation craving for self-expression and entertainment. These elements were further enhanced by the flourishing of internet and youth popular culture in the new century. This study also reveals that the success of youth-literature publishing comes with consequences for the growth and welfare of Chinese youth. Not only does the pitfalls of commercialization work in publishing for children, but the result has much to do with the history of Chinese children???s literature and the roles that children play in it. By carefully examining controversies, scandals, and debates that have been common in the publishing phenomenon, the author also offers readers a glimpse of the Chinese publishing community and industry, as well as Chinese society during this transitional time.

Bouchard, Gregory. "The philosophical publishing life of David Hume." Thesis, McGill University, 2014. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=121271.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation undertakes a study of David Hume's philosophical publishing life with the intention of delineating his complex and inadequately understood intellectual output and asserting the cultural importance of his work after his first book, A Treatise of Human Nature. It uses a broad definition of the word "philosophical publication," taking into account Hume's books as well as his works in periodicals and newspapers and his contributions to convivial gatherings. It follows Hume's critical examination of his publishing style after the commercial and critical failure of the Treatise, showing how he developed a nuanced theory of how philosophical publications functioned in a large and open print marketplace. This hinged on striking a balance between popular and academical forms of writing, which were apt for polite and rigorous types of philosophy, respectively. Working without a university position or other traditional forms of patronage, he manipulated publishing conventions in the print marketplace in an attempt to create a medium for conveying a novel and complex system of philosophy in a language and format that appealed to a large readership. This entailed exerting a high degree of control over the printing and marketing of his books. This study treats his collection Essays and Treatises on Several Subjects as the culmination of this process, examining the ways in which Hume, in conjunction with his printers and booksellers, fashioned it as both a commodity and an intellectual work with the hope that it would sell widely and gain philosophical assent. The significance of his philosophical publishing life is assessed, revealing great success on the commercial print market, mixed success at gaining philosophical assent, and deep significance in the cultural sphere of Scottish Enlightenment literati. This study argues that even though Hume produced a work of philosophy that was widely purchased, his ambitions of effecting philosophical revolution were not achieved, and scope of his influence is more accurately observed in his critique of philosophical writing and his effect on Scottish Enlightenment literary culture. At the conclusion are included a critical bibliography of Hume's philosophical works and a list of questions debated in the Edinburgh Select Society.

This thesis introduces PubPub, a complete publishing system that is consonant with the way software and research ideas are developed. It is author-driven, continuous, collaborative, and allows for data and code to be directly integrated into the document. PubPub is optimized for collaboration and iterative document creation; taking inspiration from the software development cycle it allows for more participatory forms of review. We hypothesize that by changing the scientific review process from one of static critique to one of interactive collaboration we can increase the error-detection rate of scientific review. We present an experiment to test this hypothesis by measuring error detection rates across several interactive and non-interactive documents. This work is motivated by a growing recognition that in many fields, notably those that rely on data analysis and computing, the existing review process is not sufficiently fair, accurate, or timely.
