Nowadays, we are seeing a lot of differences in our lives due to the evolution of technology. One of them is that readers are using more and more digital devices to read their favourite books and are buying eBooks. But we continue seeing the traditional books being sold online or in bookshops. In other words, we live in a digital era. The aim of this dissertation is to know how digital marketing influences the publishing industry which is encountering so many problems, especially having a drop in the sales and profits at the present time. More specifically focusing on the marketing campaigns and the readers' habits and reading preferences. This study also analyses the perceptions of the readers regarding the way they buy books and about the rate at which people buy them, independently of whether this is low or high. The experience of buying a book in a bookshop and buying online is also analysed from the point of view of the readers, or in another words, customers. In an attempt to develop this dissertation, the methodology chosen for this study is a quantitative method, due to a deductive approach and using a survey strategy. This allows collecting a large amount of data with a low margin of error. Since the time for the dissertation is short, the study is cross-sectional. In conclusion, this study is useful for the publishers to get to know the preferences, experience and needs of the readers.

In recent years, we witnessed a huge growth of multimedia data on the Web. New lower-cost technologies and greater bandwidth allowed the Web to evolve into a multimedia format. However, the lack of tools that can make multimedia format easily accessible on the Web led us to a non-searchable and non-indexable data of the Web, also known as Deep Web. In line with these observations, this dissertation addresses the problem of how to publish audio and video content on the Web. We present a tool and a novel approach that facilitates the indexing and retrieval of the objects with the help of traditional search engines. The tool automatically generates static Web pages that describe the content of the objects and organize this content to facilitate locating segments of the audio or video which correspond to the descriptions. The static Web pages can be translated to others languages to reach other user populations. An annotation process is also performed to embed machine-readable data into the Web pages. The dissertation also presents an in-depth experiment, publishing learning objects based on audio and video, to assess the efficacy of the technique.

This thesis introduces PubPub, a complete publishing system that is consonant with the way software and research ideas are developed. It is author-driven, continuous, collaborative, and allows for data and code to be directly integrated into the document. PubPub is optimized for collaboration and iterative document creation; taking inspiration from the software development cycle it allows for more participatory forms of review. We hypothesize that by changing the scientific review process from one of static critique to one of interactive collaboration we can increase the error-detection rate of scientific review. We present an experiment to test this hypothesis by measuring error detection rates across several interactive and non-interactive documents. This work is motivated by a growing recognition that in many fields, notably those that rely on data analysis and computing, the existing review process is not sufficiently fair, accurate, or timely.
