Abstract:

This research study attempted to gather, present and analyse information regarding the current role of the Parent-Teacher-Student-Associations in the democratic governance of secondary schools for purposes of contributing towards the education governance policy discourse as South Africa moves away from apartheid to democracy. Central to this largely fact-finding exercise was an attempt to make a contribution to an understanding of how the Parent-Teacher-Student-Associations, in the execution of their duties, practice both democracy and accountability; operate; resolve tensions and/or differences among parents, teachers and students; impact upon the schools in general; and relate to both the Department of Education and Training and other organs of civil society. Further, this survey attempted to ascertain m which crucial areas the Parent-Teacher-Student-Associations are most lacking, and how these could be strengthened. And finally, an attempt was made in this study to contribute to the possible future role of the Parent-Teacher-Student Associations in the new democratic education dispensation, and how, in the execution of this new role the Parent-Teacher-Student-Associations should relate to the new, future democratic government. The study concluded with a number of recommendations for policy in the area of democratic school governance. The study used largely a survey method. The Parent-Teacher-Student-Associations of three secondary schools under the auspices of the Department of Education and Training in the Western Cape region were surveyed. The single most important data-gathering instrument used was the interview. Numerous conclusions were arrived at. First, the Parent-Teacher-Student-Associations studied were found to be very powerful and effective in their areas of operation in school governance despite their inability to have access to resources of power, wealth and expertise. These Parent-Teacher-Student-Associations are important education policy actors who are not only influencing policy, but are in total control of very crucial policy areas in their schools. Second, the study concluded that whereas the Parent-Teacher-Student-Associations studied represent an important step towards the full democratisation of education in general, and in their schools in particular, their role in school governance could not be described as an unqualified success. However, despite the problems associated with the PTSAs involvement in school governance, their role does have the potential to make for better schools. And finally, because of the limited nature of the study in terms of the methodology, scope and time, the conclusions arrived at here cannot and should not be generalised beyond the confines of the study as no attempt was made to embark upon regional or national research exercise.

Navea, Opazo Samanta Camila.

Abstract:

Abstract:
South America, in recent history, has had several regional integration actions related to trade, influencing the countries positions in terms of international trade policies as well as forming a tangle of relationships that often overlaps with contrary views. In this context, this thesis addresses the history of the main regional blocs involving South America as a basis to show the current fragmentation of this subcontinent in three main views of international trade policy, with an intermediate vision characterized by Brazil and followed also by members of the MERCOSUR in a regional-multilateralist position. At one extreme, the countries Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia, ALBA representatives, present their extreme-nationalist position. And in an antagonistic position, Chile, Peru and Colombia constitute the liberal-bilateralist axis. In order to prove that there is a trend towards the strengthening of the liberal-bilateralist vision in the region, a research based on analysis of Preferential Trade Agreements will be held, focusing bilateral FTAs concluded with different countries regions with special attention to the period immediately after the outbreak of the 2008 crisis, from 2009 to 2014. Finally, if the hypothesis is confirmed, demonstrating the resumption of the bilateralist position after a period in which the multilateralist vision was predominant in South America, it is important to point the challenges of this scenario for Brazil.

Mahmood, Abdullah-Al. "Approximation Algorithms for Rectangle Piercing Problems." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/1025.

Full text
Abstract:
Piercing problems arise often in facility location, which is a well-studied area of computational geometry. The general form of the piercing problem discussed in this dissertation asks for the minimum number of facilities for a set of given rectangular demand regions such that each region has at least one facility located within it. It has been shown that even if all regions are uniform sized squares, the problem is NP-hard. Therefore we concentrate on approximation algorithms for the problem. As the known approximation ratio for arbitrarily sized rectangles is poor, we restrict our effort to designing approximation algorithms for unit-height rectangles. Our e-approximation scheme requires nO(1/ε²) time. We also consider the problem with restrictions like bounding the depth of a point and the width of the rectangles. The approximation schemes for these two cases take nO(1/ε) time. We also show how to maintain a factor 2 approximation of the piercing set in O(log n) amortized time in an insertion-only scenario.

Abstract:

Phosphorescent metal complexes can be incorporated into amyloid-like fibrils, and these fibrils can be decorated with conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs). In this study, fac-tris[2-phenylpyridinato-C2,N]irdium(III) complexes [Ir(piq)3] were used as the phosphorescence emitter and Sodium-poly(3-thiophene acetic acid) (PTAA-Na) compounds were used as CPEs. Herein we study the energy transfer processes between the iridium complexes and the CPEs. To investigate these mechanisms, the analysis of the emission quenching and time-resolved measurements were done. Our measurements show that energy can be transfered from singlet state of PTAA to the singlet state of Ir(piq)3. Moreover, incorporation of iridium into amyloid fibrils decreases the importance of energy transfer by the Dexter mechanism. Finally we propose a geometry of interaction to explain the obtained results.

Abstract:
This thesis aimed to develop an efficient and low cost method to adjust the electrical properties of p- and n-channel OFETs to allow us to build an organic CMOS and the optimization of printed p-channel OFETs to work at low voltages. We proposed a method to fabricate the organic CMOS, based on the careful selection of dielectric solvent, which was adjusted to obtain the best performance of p- and n-channel OFETs. The dielectric solvents as MEK, nBA and DMSO were selected to dissolve the PMMA dielectric polymer due their different physical properties as dipole moment and boiling point and because they showed slightly different degrees of orthogonality to the P3HT and P(NDI2OD-T2) semiconductor layers of the OFETs. The results showed that the careful selection of the dielectric solvent not only allows to tune the electrical characteristics of the p- and n-channel OFETs, but also to improve the performance of these devices. The best performances were achieved when DMSO and MEK were used as dielectric solvents of the p and n-channel OFETs, respectively, as result of the perfectly orthogonality of these solvents to the semiconductor layers. P-channel OFETs using DMSO and n-channel OFETs using nBA showed similar electrical characteristics and thus, they were used to construct the organic CMOS. The organic complementary inverters showed high gain and noise margin values in the range of 6,8 to 7,8 and 28,3 V to 34,5 V, respectively. Printed p-channel OFETs were also fabricated, in which the blend PTAA:diF TES ADT was used as semiconductor channel, PEDOT:PSS as the drain/source electrodes and P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) as the dielectric layer. The blade-coating technique was used to deposit the source/drain electrodes and the semiconductor layer, while the spray-coating technique was used to deposit the dielectric layer. It was observed that using high-k dielectric as P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) enable to reduce the operating voltage of the OFETs (≤8 V), however, this high-k dielectric also reduced the field effect mobility due the dipolar disorder at the semiconductor/dielectric interface. To minimize the dipolar issue at the interface, we inserted a thin fluoropolymer dielectric layer by blade-coating between the semiconductor and the high-k dielectric layers, thus constituting a dielectric bilayer on the OFETs. From the electrical measurements of the OFETs with the dielectric bilayer, it was observed that the devices were still working at 8 V and they also showed better performance in comparison to results already published. Finally, organic unipolar inverters with load transistors were fabricated using the p-channel OFETs with the dielectric bilayer and they showed reasonable performance, with gain and noise margin in the range of 1,2 to 1,6 and 56% e 68,5% of ½ VDD, respectively.

This research aimed at investigating, through the education professionals point of view, how parents/guardian are participating at school, what professionals expect from this participation and which factors could damage or help its promotion. Two auxiliary canals at Public State Schools: Parent and Teacher Associations (PTAs) and School Councils were approached as they are in force and guaranteed by law. Fourteen subjects (directors, teachers and employees), from seven Elementary Schools - Cicle I, in Franca-SP, took part in the research. A questionnaire and an interview were used to collect data. Results showed that school professionals recognize the importance of parents/guardian at school, but they also recognize the difficulty to promote it. The study revealed that Parent and Teacher Associations (PTAs) and School Councils could not be firmed yet as effective auxiliary canals for the Education Institutions. On the contrary, the participants consider these canals as formal, bureaucratic spaces: the first, giving priority to the finance dimension, without any connection with the pedagogic dimension; the latter, it is showed through reports, have little performance in the everyday school life. About both Parent and Teacher Association (PTAs) and School Councils it was detected a lack of clearness on the part of the school professionals as for the aims, rights and owes that these canals point, discrediting, thus, the power of decision and participation on them, in the sight of improving education. On the other hand, it was observed a change, at least in the discourse, going towards the recognition that the school is not self-sufficient to take decisions and it needs the parents/guardian to achieve the goal of a school with better quality

Abstract:
In this work we formalize a new natural objective (or cost) function for bi-clustering - Monochromatic bi-clustering. Our objective function is suitable for detecting meaningful homogenous clusters based on categorical valued input matrices. Such problems have arisen recently in systems biology where researchers have inferred functional classifications of biological agents based on their pairwise interactions. We analyze the computational complexity of the resulting optimization problems. We show that finding optimal solutions is NP-hard and complement this result by introducing a polynomial time approximation algorithm for this bi-clustering task. This is the first positive approximation guarantee for bi-clustering algorithms. We also show that bi-clustering with our objective function can be viewed as a generalization of correlation clustering.

Abstract:
Geometric covering is a well-studied topic in computational geometry. We study three covering problems: Disjoint Unit-Disk Cover, Depth-(≤ K) Packing and Red-Blue Unit-Square Cover. In the Disjoint Unit-Disk Cover problem, we are given a point set and want to cover the maximum number of points using disjoint unit disks. We prove that the problem is NP-complete and give a polynomial-time approximation scheme (PTAS) for it. In Depth-(≤ K) Packing for Arbitrary-Size Disks/Squares, we are given a set of arbitrary-size disks/squares, and want to find a subset with depth at most K and maximizing the total area. We prove a depth reduction theorem and present a PTAS. In Red-Blue Unit-Square Cover, we are given a red point set, a blue point set and a set of unit squares, and want to find a subset of unit squares to cover all the blue points and the minimum number of red points. We prove that the problem is NP-hard, and give a PTAS for it. A "mod-one" trick we introduce can be applied to several other covering problems on unit squares.

Abstract:
This thesis has two parts. In the first part, we study some graph covering problems with a non-local covering rule that allows a "remote" node to be covered by repeatedly applying the covering rule. In the second part, we provide some results on the packing of Steiner trees. In the Propagation problem we are given a graph $G$ and the goal is to find a minimum-sized set of nodes $S$ that covers all of the nodes, where a node $v$ is covered if (1) $v$ is in $S$, or (2) $v$ has a neighbor $u$ such that $u$ and all of its neighbors except $v$ are covered. Rule (2) is called the propagation rule, and it is applied iteratively. Throughout, we use $n$ to denote the number of nodes in the input graph. We prove that the path-width parameter is a lower bound for the optimal value. We show that the Propagation problem is NP-hard in planar weighted graphs. We prove that it is NP-hard to approximate the optimal value to within a factor of $2^{\log^{1-\epsilon}{n}}$ in weighted (general) graphs. The second problem that we study is the Power Dominating Set problem. This problem has two covering rules. The first rule is the same as the domination rule as in the Dominating Set problem, and the second rule is the same propagation rule as in the Propagation problem. We show that it is hard to approximate the optimal value to within a factor of $2^{\log^{1-\epsilon}{n}}$ in general graphs. We design and analyze an approximation algorithm with a performance guarantee of $O(\sqrt{n})$ on planar graphs. We formulate a common generalization of the above two problems called the General Propagation problem. We reformulate this general problem as an orientation problem, and based on this reformulation we design a dynamic programming algorithm. The algorithm runs in linear time when the graph has tree-width $O(1)$. Motivated by applications, we introduce a restricted version of the problem that we call the $\ell$-round General Propagation problem. We give a PTAS for the $\ell$-round General Propagation problem on planar graphs, for small values of $\ell$. Our dynamic programming algorithms and the PTAS can be extended to other problems in networks with similar propagation rules. As an example we discuss the extension of our results to the Target Set Selection problem in the threshold model of the diffusion processes. In the second part of the thesis, we focus on the Steiner Tree Packing problem. In this problem, we are given a graph $G$ and a subset of terminal nodes $R\subseteq V(G)$. The goal in this problem is to find a maximum cardinality set of disjoint trees that each spans $R$, that is, each of the trees should contain all terminal nodes. In the edge-disjoint version of this problem, the trees have to be edge disjoint. In the element-disjoint version, the trees have to be node disjoint on non-terminal nodes and edge-disjoint on edges adjacent to terminals. We show that both problems are NP-hard when there are only $3$ terminals. Our main focus is on planar instances of these problems. We show that the edge-disjoint version of the problem is NP-hard even in planar graphs with $3$ terminals on the same face of the embedding. Next, we design an algorithm that achieves an approximation guarantee of $\frac{1}{2}-\frac{1}{k}$, given a planar graph that is $k$ element-connected on the terminals; in fact, given such a graph the algorithm returns $k/2-1$ element-disjoint Steiner trees. Using this algorithm we get an approximation algorithm with guarantee of (almost) $4$ for the edge-disjoint version of the problem in planar graphs. We also show that the natural LP relaxation of the edge-disjoint Steiner Tree Packing problem has an integrality ratio of $2-\epsilon$ in planar graphs.

Aim of this work was to demonstrate that Schottky-Diodes can be fabricated by means of Roll-to-Roll-Methods and to characterize these diodes. The diodes consists of a sputtered cathode (Aluminum or Copper), a gravure printed semiconducting layer of Polytriphenylamine (PTPA3) and a flexo printed anode (PEDOT:PSS, Pani, Carbon Black). Best electrical characteristics were obtained with diodes consisting Copper and Carbon Black as electrodes. With a thickness of the semiconducting layer of ~200 nm diodes with a cut-off frequency above 1 MHz could be demonstrated. These diodes showed also a good stability when exposed to UV-light, moisture and temperature.:Inhaltsverzeichnis 1 Einleitung 2 Metall-Halbleiter-Kontakt 2.1 Idealer Metall-Halbleiter-Kontakt 2.2 Metall-Halbleiter-Kontakt unter Spannung 2.3 Realer Metall-Halbleiter-Kontakt 2.3.1 Metall-Halbleiter-Kontakte ohne Grenzflächenzustände innerhalb der Bandlücke 2.3.2 Metall-Halbleiter-Kontakt mit Grenzflächenzuständen 2.4 Grenzflächen zwischen Metallen und organischen Materialien 2.5 Transportmechanismen / -modelle 2.5.1 Ladungstransport in organischen Halbleitern 2.5.2 Thermionische Emission 2.5.3 Fowler-Nordheim-Tunneln 2.5.4 Raumladungsbegrenzte Ströme 2.6 Poole-Frenkel Effekt 3 Stabilität organischer Materialien 3.1 Einfluss von Sauerstoff 3.2 Einfluss von Wasser 3.3 Einfluss von chemischen Reaktionen 3.4 Einfluss von elektrischem Stress 3.5 Einfluss von Licht 3.6 Einfluss von Struktur- und Morphologieänderungen 3.7 Einfluss von kombinierten Effekten 3.8 Einfluss von Barriereschichten 4 Schottky-Dioden 4.1 Allgemeiner Aufbau 4.2 Stand der Technik 4.3 Anforderungen an Materialien für Schottky-Dioden 4.3.1 Kathode 4.3.2 Halbleiter 4.3.3 Anode 4.4 Gleichrichter 4.5 Logische Schaltungen mit Dioden 5 Rolle-zu-Rolle-Verfahren / Druckverfahren 5.1 Übersicht Druckverfahren / Beschichtungsverfahren 5.2 Bewertung der Verfahren für die Herstellung von Schottky-Dioden 6 Versuchsdurchführung 6.1 Druckversuche 6.1.1 Genutzte Druckmaschinen 6.1.2 Verwendete Materialien 6.2 Messverfahren 6.2.1 Morphologische Charakterisierung 6.2.2 Elektrische Charakterisierung 6.2.3 Strom-Spannungs-Charakterisitik 6.2.4 Kapazitätscharakteristik 6.2.5 Elektrische Eigenschaften der Anodenmaterialien 7 Ergebnisse der Druckversuche 7.1 Einfluss der Lösungsmittel 7.2 Einfluss der Druckgeschwindigkeit 7.3 Druck der Anode 8 Elektrische Charakterisierung der Dioden 8.1 Vergleich der Elektrodenmaterialien 8.2 Strom-Spannungs-Kennlinie in Sperrrichtung 8.3 Gleichmäßigkeit der Strom-Spannungs-Charakteristik 8.4 Einfluss des Lösungsmittelgemischs 8.5 Einfluss der Trocknungstemperatur 8.6 Kapazitätscharakteristika 9 Stabilität 9.1 Langzeitstabilität 9.2 Hysterese 9.3 Einfluss der Temperatur 9.4 Einfluss von Feuchtigkeit 9.5 Einfluss von Licht 9.6 Einfluss von elektrischem Stress 10 Anwendungen 10.1 Gleichrichter 10.2 Logische Schaltungen mit Dioden 11 Zusammenfassung Literaturverzeichnis Abbildungsverzeichnis Tabellenverzeichnis Formel- und Symbolverzeichnis Abkürzungsverzeichnis Danksagung Lebenslauf Veröffentlichungen Eigenständigkeitserklärung

Abstract:
The implementation of neoliberal globalizing policies, centered on the governance of markets, has led to the relocation of employment sources to specific production centers, forcing the workforce to move to them. Such is the case of the farm workers from Mexico and Guatemala that are mobilized year after year into Québec’s fields and greenhouses through the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (SAWP) and / or the Agricultural Stream of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (AS-TFWP). Individuals who are part of a vulnerable and flexible labour force, and whose hiring conditions violate their fundamental and labour rights by tying them to a single employer, forcing them to reside in the employer's premises and exposing them to premature repatriation. This research project infers that affectivity and emotionality are increasingly explored topics in the social sciences, particularly in geography. By incorporating the emotional dimension, it exposes the need to examine the emotional narratives of Mexican and Guatemalan transmigrant farm workers, based on the possible ideological use of the emotions that are socialized in a multiscalar and spatial way by the actors who govern the programs that hire them. It therefore raises the question that understanding the emotions of these workers, associated with their participation under specific work conditions framed by the SAWP and the AS-TFWP can significantly contribute to studies that address the relationship between emotionality and male labour migration. This is demonstrated by analyzing Canadian, Mexican and Guatemalan state-driven policies and practices, using emotions such as fear, despair, acquiescence and resignation as mechanisms of social control within the SAWP and the AS-TFWP, along with satisfaction pride in fulfilling the breadwinner role as the unique form of masculinity proposed by these programs. In particular, the relationship between emotions, masculinity and the experience of powerlessness is elucidated. Likewise, through the interweaving of workers' narratives, the interaction of different discriminatory categories is clarified, based on the masculine gender, rarely used in existing migratory studies. Finally, we analyze the speeches of those who have been left behind, the wives of the workers and a few key people, in order to account for the emotional costs caused by the absence of their partners and fathers of their children.
