Abstract:
The search for the best outcomes in psychotherapy and counseling has been a long and winding trail. Traditional research methods attempting to quantify expertise have yet to map the complex path and characteristics of expert psychotherapists and counselors. This book blazes a new trail using extensive qualitative research methods to understand psychotherapy experts. Ten peer-nominated, active practitioners representing four different professions were interviewed by three interviewers for a total of over 100 hours. Based on the data from these interviews, we offer a portrait of the master therapist as well as an exploration of central characteristics, emotional wellness and resiliency of masters, how they construct the therapy relationship, ethical values of these experts, a history of the concept of expertise, and a description of our research methods. Master Therapists continues to be a valuable resource for counseling and therapy practitioners and scholars because it explicates the cognitive, emotional, and relational (CER) model of counseling expertise and provides the initial context for the more recent surge of expertise studies in counseling and psychotherapy. This research-based qualitative work provides essential signposts and markers on the road to psychotherapy expertise.

Abstract:
Interest in the psychotherapeutic capacity of Buddhist teachings and practices is widely evident in the popular imagination. News media routinely report on the neuropsychological study of Buddhist meditation and applications of mindfulness practices in settings including corporate offices, the U.S. military, and university health centers. However, as Ira Helderman shows, curious investigators have studied the psychological dimensions of Buddhist doctrine for well over a century, stretching back to William James and Carl Jung. These activities have shaped both the mental health field and Buddhist practice throughout the United States. This is the first comprehensive study of the surprisingly diverse ways that psychotherapists have related to Buddhist traditions. Through extensive fieldwork and in-depth interviews with clinicians, many of whom have been formative to the therapeutic use of Buddhist practices, Helderman gives voice to the psychotherapists themselves. He focuses on how they understand key categories such as religion and science. Some are invested in maintaining a hard border between religion and psychotherapy as a biomedical discipline. Others speak of a religious-secular binary that they mean to disrupt. Helderman finds that psychotherapists’ approaches to Buddhist traditions are molded by how they define what is and is not religious, demonstrating how central these concepts are in contemporary American culture.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on data collection as part of the evaluation of disability, with emphasis on the specific methodology for obtaining data from various sources such as written records and documents, self-report data from the claimant, psychological testing and neuropsychological testing, and information from collaterals such as interviews and treatment providers including psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychotherapists. It also describes instruments commonly used in assessing psychopathology and cognitive functioning during disability evaluation. Finally, it considers formal assessment of the claimant's response style as an integral part of the independent medical examination.
