Abstract:
In a current prospective sociomedical study of families in a Stockholm surburb, their home environments were investigated through interviews with the mothers on their first visit to a maternity health centre when pregnant, and through data obtained from various records. In a sample of 498 mothers, 109 women with psychosocial difficulties were compared with 255 women of the same age but who were not psychosocially deprived. While taking into account biomedical risk factors and parity, it appeared that there was little difference between the groups with regard to frequency of complications in pregnancy, delivery or in the newborn infant. The existence of supportive medical and social factors could be one explanation as to why anticipated differences between the groups were not observed.

Abstract:
Prevalence of hypertension in women has been increasing day by day, it was reported that in India the overall prevalence of hypertension is 15.4 per cent among men and 15.9 per cent among women1, keeping in view the mounting prevalence of hypertension in women, the present investigation aimed to compare hypertensive and non-hypertensive women on stress, anger styles, type A behaviour and subjective well-being. The sample comprised of 200 women i.e. 100 were hypertensive women and 100 healthy women labeled as non hypertensive women within the age range of 45 yr - 60 yr. The study provided strong evidence for the detrimental effects of anger, stress and type a behavior. Thus, there are various programs which should be given to patients that help them to modify their behavior and promote different ways to enhance optimism, subjective well-being and effective coping among women and consequently reduce the risk of hypertension.

Abstract:
Studies of self-reported health on large cohorts in Sweden indicate that men and women in lower social classes in this country report considerably worse health than men and women in the upper classes. This is in line with many other research findings in many countries. What is interesting in Swedish data, however, is that self-reported health improved during the ten-year period after retirement. This was particularly pronounced during the years of financial crisis during the 1990s. Low decision latitude at work seems to account for part of the poor health in the lower social classes. An important task in future research will be to tie the epidemiological findings on ageing to endocrine factors strongly correlated with ageing, such as female and male sex hormones as well as their precursor, DHEA.

Abstract:
SummarySeveral reviews on social functioning measurements using structured interviews or questionnaires have been published in recent years. This report examines Weissman and Brugha’s report on these tools and the respective interest of self-rating scales or interviews. In the elderly, multidimensional tools such as MAI or CARE have proven to be very useful. Questionnaires may be the best tools for assessing social adaptation in the elderly: a short self-rating scale that aims to assess social adaptation in the elderly in the community has therefore been presented. The SII Q is derived from the Multilevel Assessment Instrument (MAI) and the Index of Social Support (ISS). A principal component analysis of this new Social Integration and Independence Questionnaire (17 items) elicited four factors accounting for 48.8% of the variance, representing four parameters of social functioning: independence, social integration, familial interaction and depression.
