Abstract:

This study attempts to investigate factors associated with involvement in substance abuse in Trinidad and Tobago, through a survey of 1603 secondary school students, aged fourteen to eighteen years. Analysis of the data using the Chi-square test indicates a significant association ( p < .001) between involvement in substance abuse and the following factors: grades at school, importance of religious involvement, amount of spending money obtained, confidence placed in parents/peers, parental involvement in alcohol consumption and educational expectations. Generally, the study indicates that youth less committed to traditional values, show a greater tendency to be involved in substance abuse. Involvement also appears to be associated with low self esteem and low educational expectations.

Abstract This article considers the analytic categories scholars use to conceptualize religious difference in the Caribbean and addresses the relatively sparse theorizing of Christianity in the study of so-called syncretic or creole religions of the African diaspora. I take the Spiritual Baptists of Trinidad and Tobago as a case study to shed light on the significant divergences between vernacular definitions of Christianity and those designations scholars use to parse and make sense of Afro-Creole diversity. I am especially interested in what is at stake analytically. Spiritual Baptists challenge conventional articulations of Christian orthodoxy and Black Atlantic religiosity by reconciling a “fundamentalist” Christian identity with an especially fluid cosmopolitan eclecticism. Drawing on comprehensive ethnographic research, I show how the unique permutations of creole variation within Spiritual Baptist faith unsettle deterministic equations of race and religion and contest the often manufactured oppositions between Christianity and African religion.

Abstract:

The suicide rate in Trinidad and Tobago is much greater than that of its English‐speaking Caribbean neighbors. Many of these suicides are paraquat induced. This research reviewed the deaths due to suicide in the area with the greatest agricultural activity in Trinidad for 1996 and identified, for further demographic and etiological investigation, cases in which paraquat was ingested as the agent of suicide. Of 48 cases of suicide for the year, 39 (81.3%) were due to paraquat poisoning. The incidence of paraquat‐induced suicide was 8.0 per 100,000. Among the males, 47.8% were in the age group 25–34 (p < 0.001), and among the females 50.0% were in the 15–24 age group (p < 0.05). Family‐of‐origin disputes were the most frequently cited precipitant, followed by marital problems. Individuals of East Indian origin accounted for 89% of the suicide victims (p < 0.001). When compared with suicide by other methods in the country, these findings confirm that paraquat poisoning is a significant means of suicide in Trinidad and that young East Indian individuals are particularly vulnerable.

Abstract:

Using the UNICEF Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys, this study assessed the associations between fathers’ cognitive engagement and preschoolers’ literacy skills in African Caribbean, Indo-Caribbean, and mixed-ethnic Caribbean families in Trinidad and Tobago. The sample consisted of 476 fathers and their preschool-aged children. Multigroup structural equation modeling indicated that paternal cognitive engagement was associated with children’s literacy skills in mixed-ethnic Caribbean and Indo-Caribbean families above and beyond maternal cognitive engagement activities. Across all groups, children’s age, number of hours in preschool, and number of children’s books in the home were associated with children’s literacy skills. Fathers’ residential status was associated with children’s literacy skills differently across ethnic groups. Findings are interpreted in terms of the importance and consistency of paternal engagement in the home environment for the acquisition of early language skills in developing countries.

Abstract:

Through the forced migration of various peoples by colonial powers, the Caribbean has become a melting pot of a wide array of races, cultures, and religions. However, the existence of Hinduism in the Caribbean is often unknown to those outside of the Caribbean and its diaspora, and is sometimes overlooked within the region. Much like other social, cultural and religious artefacts in the region, Hinduism in the Caribbean has became distinct from its origins, through a unique process of ‘creolization’. This essay seeks to contextualize Hinduism in the Caribbean from the 19th century onward, considering factors that have led to the evolution of Caribbean Hinduism in Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago, while acknowledg- ing the dangers of using this evolution to define the religion as a whole.

The demands of teaching at the tertiary level are increasing all the time. YouTube is one of the new e-resources that can be used in contemporary tertiary education pedagogy. This paper is an account of YouTube usage in three psychology classes (adolescent, developmental, and educational psychology) at the University of Trinidad and Tobago. This paper reports on the usage of YouTube videos as means of summarising course content, clarifying complex concepts, concretising abstract ideas, modelling appropriate interventions, reinforcing domain-specific jargon, exploring vicarious laboratory experimentation, and capturing first-hand musings and expositions of historical and contemporary theorists in the field of psychology. A rationale for each particular use was also given as well as the real and potential benefits to modern students.

The globalisation of reggae continues to engender a wide range of highly poignant re-inscriptions and re-interpretations of reggae's sound and of Rastafarian thought. One of the most compelling of these has been the negotiation of Rastafarian and Christian ideologies within the context of Protestant reggae bands and artists. The application of Rastafarian thought, dress and language to the evangelical concerns of Protestants – at times paradoxical, at others ingenious – signals an important moment of inter-religious contact that opens a window onto the complexities and multiple meanings that attach to music and to religious systems as they travel between the local and the global. This essay considers music by Christafari (United States), Sherwin Gardner (Trinidad and Tobago), and Stitchie (Jamaica), and considers questions related to the parallel globalisation of reggae and Rastafari. It does this by interrogating the extent to which authenticity, positionality, and religious context inform the use of and interpretation of Rastafari symbols within gospel reggae. In so doing, I introduce a concept that I call the negotiation of proximity, and offer some reflections on the ways that the Rastafari elements within gospel reggae might be understood in new, global (and newly localised) contexts.

Abstract:

While there are vast disparities in size and population between Canada and Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), there are important commonalities between the two including, ethnic and religious diversity, and adherence to strong democratic principals. T&T’s Muslim community represents approximately 5% of the population and has been a strong fiber in the social fabric since 1845. The actions of a small number of citizens has however led to T&T being labelled as having the highest foreign terrorist fighters (FTFs) per capita in the western world. Trinidadians have also been the victims of international terrorism including 9/11 and the Westgate Shopping Mall attack in Kenya. These issues together with the evolving tactics of terror organizations such as ISIL, coupled with T&T being a target rich environment, places terrorism high on the national security agenda.

Abstract:

The suicide rates in Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago are among the highest in the Americas, containing significant Indo-Caribbean populations that are suggested to be most vulnerable to suicide. This systematic review analyzes the existing literature and identifies knowledge gaps in risk and protective factors against suicide in these countries. The literature search conducted followed PRISMA guidelines using the PubMed and APA PsycInfo databases. The PRISMA flow diagram illustrated that eight scholarly papers were eligible for inclusion. Included literature examined stratified data focused on the aforementioned countries, as well as their Indo-Caribbean adolescent populations. Excluded literature did not mention suicidality, adolescents, Indo-Caribbeans, or the focal countries or was focused on the Jonestown mass murder–suicide event. The studies encompassed 6581 individuals. Identified risk factors include social stigma regarding suicide, mental health resource scarcity, and difficult socioeconomic conditions. The identified protective factors for youth include religious/spiritual practices and group activities. Limitations include database quantity, risk of publication bias, and the small sample for each study. A prevailing social stigma regarding suicide was identified. Greater research is needed relating to effects of suicide legislation, bereavement experiences, sociocultural contexts, geography, migration patterns, and culturally compatible interventions to aid future suicide prevention efforts. The protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023417494).

Introduction: Once again, simultaneously with the malacological studies carried about the country of Venezuela (Agudo-Padrón 2023 a-b) and the immediate neighboring islands of Trinidad & Tobago (Agudo-Padrón 2023 c), since 2014 the “Projeto AM” (Brazil) has carried parallel out taxonomic, bioecological and conservation research of the non-marine (land/ terrestrial) molluscs present in the neighbor insular set territory artificially denomined “ABC” (Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao islands). To date, the aspects of the natural history of this geographic region, equally located in the Northern sector of South America, although in the West sector of the Dutch Southeast Caribbean facing to Venezuela mainland, have been regularly studied. Objective: Substantial updating of this knowledge through an exhaustive review of the regional malacological literature of historical and recent nature available. Methodology: Between 2014 and the present, a sequential review of the species occasionally referred to in the regional literature was carried out, examined from the perspective of the current taxonomy in force. Results and conclusions: Verification and determination of fifty-three (53) valid referred nominal taxons, including 15 subspecies & 38 species of land/ terrestrial gastropods, taxonomically grouped into seventeen (17) families and thirty (30) genera.

Introduction: Simultaneous with the malacological studies carried about the country of Venezuela (Agudo-Padrón 2023 a-b) and their immediate insular neighbor territories of Trinidad & Tobago (Agudo-Padrón 2023 c) & the Dutch ABC (Agudo-Padrón 2023 d), additionally since 2014 the “Projeto AM” (Brazil) has carried parallel out taxonomic, bioecological and conservation research of the non-marine (land & freshwater) molluscs present in the mainland territory of the three (3) “Guianas” – including the “English/ British Guiana” (territory historically disputed, actively to this day, by “Venezuela”), the “Dutch Guiana” (better known as "Surinam"), and the “French Guiana” (border with the extreme North of “Brazil”). To date, these aspects of the natural history of this geographic region, located in the Northern sector of South America, have been regularly studied. Objective: Substantial updating of this knowledge through an exhaustive review of the regional malacological literature of historical and recent nature available. Methodology: Between 2014 and the present, a sequential review of the species occasionally referred to in the regional literature was carried out, examined from the perspective of the current taxonomy in force. Results and conclusions: Verification and determination of hundred one (101) referred taxons, including 63 land/ terrestrial (2 subspecies & 61 species) and 38 aquatic (limnic/ freshwater) forms/ species (31 gastropods & 7 bivalves), taxonomically grouped into twenty-seven (27) families and forty-four (44) genera.

Abstract:

Undefined cultural factors cannot be dismissed and significantly contribute to the worldwide incidence of death by suicide. Culture is an all embracing term and defines the relationship of an individual to his environment. This study seeks to investigate the effect of culture on suicide both regionally and internationally. Culture-bound syndrome with suicidal behaviours specific to a particular culture or geographical region are discussed. Opinions are divided as to the status of religious martyrs. The law itself is silent on many aspects of suicidal behaviour and despite decriminalization of suicide as self-murder, the latter remains on the statutes of many developing countries. The Caribbean region is of concern due to its steady rise in mean suicide rate, especially in Trinidad and Tobago where socio-cultural factors are instrumental in influencing suicidal behaviour. These include transgenerational cultural conflicts, psycho-social problems, media exposure, unemployment, social distress, religion and family structure. The methods used are attributed to accessibility and lethality. Ingestion of poisonous substances is most popular followed by hanging. The gender differences seen with regard to suicidality can also be attributed to gender related psychopathology and psychosocial differences in help-seeking behaviour. These are influenced by the cultural environment to which the individual is exposed. Culture provides coping strategies to individuals; as civilization advances many of these coping mechanisms are lost unclothing the genetic predisposition of vulnerable groups. In the management of suicidal behaviour, a system of therapeutic re-culturation is needed with an emphasis on relevant culture- based therapies.

As climate change continues unabated, research is increasingly focused on capturing and quantifying the lesser-known psychological responses and mental health implications of this humanitarian and environmental crisis. There has been a particular interest in the experiences of young people, who are more vulnerable for a range of reasons, including their developmental stage, the high rates of mental health conditions among this population, and their relative lack of agency to address climate threats. The different geographic and sociocultural settings in which people are coming of age afford certain opportunities and present distinct challenges and exposures to climate hazards. Understanding the diversity of lived experiences is vitally important for informing evidence-based, locally led psychosocial support and social and climate policies. In this Project Report we describe the design and implementation of the “Changing Worlds” study, focusing on our experiences and personal reflections as a transdisciplinary collaboration representing the UK, India, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Barbados, the Philippines, and the USA. The project was conceived within the planetary health paradigm, aimed at characterizing and quantifying the impacts of human-mediated environmental systems changes on youth mental health and wellbeing. With input from local youth representatives, we designed and delivered a series of locally adapted surveys asking young people about their mental health and wellbeing, as well as their thoughts, emotions, and perceived agency in relation to the climate crisis and the global COVID-19 pandemic. This project report outlines the principles that guided the study design and describes the conceptual and practical hurdles we navigated as a distributed and interdisciplinary research collaboration working in different institutional, social, and research governance settings. Finally, we highlight lessons learned, specify our recommendations for other collaborative research projects in this space, and touch upon the next steps for our work. This project explicitly balances context sensitivity and the need for quantitative, globally comparable data on how youth are responding to and coping with environmental change, inspiring a new vision for a global community of practice on mental health in climate change.

Abstract:

This article focuses on the migration of indentured labor from India to various parts of the world like Guyana, Mauritius, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, and Fiji. It aims to analyze the role of women in Indian diaspora as preservers of culture and identity. Indian diaspora, comprised of the ethnic groups that have left Indian borders, is having a sizeable number of women in them. Women from various socio-economic groups, castes, faiths, and classes have emigrated from India. The paper tries to analyze how the concepts of culture and identity operate in a diasporic context. Women, who contribute to half of the world population, have been rarely heard or considered in the historical record of literates and intellectuals. Further it intends to explain the significant role played by the women in the nineteenth century which facilitated transformation of many colonies of British and French Empires. The paper presents a theoretical framework in which the existence of women in small numbers facilitated marriages crossing various social barriers like caste, class and religious boundaries. In this regard, the authors suggest, however, indentured labor and specifically women in Indian diaspora acted as a bridge to maintain their links with their culture, traditions, language, religion and their past which they have left behind. They also ensure the preservation of these relations with India by celebrating Indian festivals like Holi for Hindus and Muharram for Muslims, in their traditional ways. It was women in the family, who played an important role in retaining and promoting their language by insisting on using native language for communications within the family. These women who remain integrated to their language and traditions orally played a vital role as carriers of their culture. The paper also discusses the Indian government’s cultural diplomacy, particularly under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, who has travelled to many countries in recent months to spread Indian culture and identity and reinvigorate their connectedness.

Abstract Five major challenges experienced while conducting a study regarding the neurobehavioral developmental trajectories of primary school children in Trinidad and Tobago are reviewed. 1. Governing Principles. Institutional review of the scientific rationale for the work and safety of participants is required for research activities in any/all settings. 2. Design/Methodology. Cultural beliefs/values/goals shape the research endeavor from recruitment strategies, informed consent, research design, and data collection to outcome monitoring. 3. Participants. Research studies involving children are closely scrutinized. Children need additional protections because they cannot give informed consent. Who speaks for children and how? Children must be recruited via guardians - who may not be parents but societal institutions functioning as “proxy guardians”. The relationships between parents and different “proxy guardians” respond to cultural beliefs/values. 4. Behavioral Measurement-Tests. American psychology has been severely critiqued as focusing on a circumscribed sector of the population while neglecting 95% of the global community. A core concern is the use, in non-United States settings, of behavioral measures developed and normed in the U.S. No measure can be truly culture free: all brains are sculpted by interactions not only with the physical world but also with the psychological world of their own cultural heritage. 5. Behavioral Measurement-Rating Scales. In transferring research across cultures, language/dialect differences are frequently highlighted. Differences in literacy can be even more challenging. Lack of literacy cannot be used to exclude persons from potential research benefits, nor for the failure to conduct effective informed consent processes. Cultural variations in the value/use of the written word have direct impact on research design/methodology, data collection/quality, the training/conduct of research personnel, and on funding. Implications for the mounting research in international settings are discussed.

Abstract:

This article contributes to the still limited analysis of gender and sexuality in the exploration of HIV infection in the Caribbean. In Trinidad and Tobago, child sexual abuse was identified as a prevalent behavior. This motivated a gendered exploration of the sociocultural factors underlying child sexual abuse and the link with HIV. Using a qualitative action research methodology, researchers sought to understand the patterns of behavior, sociocultural and gendered meanings, and significance of child sexual abuse; to sensitize stakeholders to these issues; and to develop multidisciplinary community-based interventions and policies. This article reports on the analysis of data collected from the interventions carried out as part of the action research methodology, as well as a range of national and community-specific action research activities including ethnographic case studies, national stakeholders meetings, and a study of service providers. It provides a nuanced understanding of the meanings, underlying assumptions, perceptions, and taboos associated with child sexual abuse in Trinidad and Tobago, as well as new ways of understanding child sexual abuse in the Caribbean. Findings showed that the social and gender context for child sexual abuse involves several interconnecting factors located within a framework of gender ideologies and expressions, sexual expectations and behaviors, and social norms based on patriarchal values. These findings would be of significance for the prevention of child sexual abuse and the associated HIV risk in Trinidad and Tobago, and the management of victims and perpetrators of child sexual abuse.

Abstract:

Background: Major lower extremity amputation is defined as any amputation of the limb performed above the level of the ankle. Indications often include severe infection, ischemia, trauma and tumours. Total amputation rate in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) is not yet known. Data is only available from a single center in Trinidad and Tobago over a two year period and not from the entire country and the number of total amputation was based on simple speculation and general estimate. The aim of this study is to first time document the exact annual amputation rate in T&T with their demographic characteristics and also to find out whether the existing methods of health education are effective in reducing amputations. Methods: A retrospective review of all lower limb amputations was performed in all 5 public hospitals in Trinidad and Tobago from January 2012 to December 2018. Annual major lower limb amputations in the 10 private hospitals were also documented. Data collected on patients demographics included patient’s age, sex, race, and amputation type. Results: A total of 3586 (85.87%) major lower limb amputations were performed in the public and 590 (14.13%) in the private hospitals over our 7 year study period. The average annual major lower limb amputation rate in T&T is about 600 (596.5) with an average daily rate of 1.63. The mean age of our study group was 65.7 (23-103) years with a male to female ratio of 1.2:1. Afro Trinidadian accounted for 1962 (47%), Indo Trinidadian 1899 (42%) and other 11%. The predominant type of amputations was above knee 55.06% (n=2299) compared to below knee 44.94% (n=1877). Diabetic foot complications accounted for the majority of amputations in this study. The amputation rate has not declined over the years; rather there has been an annual increase over the study. Conclusions: The annual major lower limb amputation rate in T&T is significantly higher than previous estimates. This is very costly in the context of our limited resources and alarming on our already exhausted economy. This study shows that diabetes and peripheral vascular disease continue to be major risk factors for lower limb amputations: this negatively impacts the overall health of our society. Current methods have failed to reduce amputations. We recommend an integrated multidisciplinary approach involving doctors, diabetic nurse counselors, dieticians, podiatrists, physiotherapists, social welfare officers, politicians, religious leaders and social scientists. Continued education on diabetes, its complications and foot care as well as modifications of current methods are essential to minimize limb loss.
