Coopoo, Perishka. "Constructions of perpetrators of rape in psychology journal articles: A discursive analysis." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/72114.

Abstract:
Considerable amounts of research, including research in psychology, has been produced to better understand the social phenomenon of sexual violence. The reality of sexual violence is not new but the construction of this phenomenon as a social problem is relatively recent consequence of activist effort and ideological shifts. Research specifically related to social constructions of rape and/or sexual violence have been conducted across various social domains. What seems to be lacking in the literature is an investigation into the way in which academic articles have constructed the phenomenon. The aim of this research was to explore the ways in which perpetrators of rape were discursively constructed in psychology journal articles. The theoretical background that informed this research is that of social constructionism and poststructuralism. The methodological approach deemed suitable and used for this research was Foucauldian discourse analysis. Prevailing constructions in journal articles relating to perpetrators of sexual violence were examined and their implications for subjectivity and practice explored. The findings of this research described six dominant discourses, namely a victim/villain discourse, a psychological discourse, a pathology discourse, a treatment discourse, a career discourse and a gender discourse, some of which had sub-discourses embedded within. The discourses and sub-discourses worked together to produced certain effects and functions. Also, contradictions and variations emerged within and between them. The findings of this research further allowed for a look at how psychology journal articles fit into larger societal discourses.

Abstract:
Ethics is a topic of great importance for professional school psychologists. The National Association of School Psychologists’ (NASP) Principles for Professional Ethics is a document that originated in 1974 and was most recently revised in 2010. The function of this document is to guide school psychologists’ conduct in their professional careers. This study examines the content of school psychology journals, the NASP school psychology newspaper, and NASP convention abstracts from the last 16 years to evaluate the ethical topics being discussed within the school psychology community. A search of the publications related to ethics provides answers to several questions while highlighting the contemporary concerns and interests of school psychologists. The findings of this study include the representation of ethical issues in four domains to varying degrees. The greatest topics of interest and concern for school psychologists were found to be related to assessments and interventions while issues related to professional behaviors seem underrepresented in the literature.

Lybrand, Blythe, Ginette Blackhart, Amanda Parish, and Hannah Lowe. "Investigating the Misrepresentation of Statistical Significance in Empirical Articles." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2021. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/646.

Full text
Abstract:
In an attempt to preserve research integrity, the aim of this study is to examine how often statistical results are being misrepresented in empirical studies by using terms such as “marginally significant,” “approached significance,” or “trend toward significance” when interpreting findings. The use of these terms gives ambiguous significance to results that are in fact nonsignificant, which threatens future research by contributing to issues such as the replication crisis. For this study, data were coded from 437 empirical articles published online in The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (JPSP) over a 4-year period between 2017 and 2020. According to our findings, although misrepresentation of statistical results are prevalent within JPSP articles, rates decreased significantly over the four-year time period examined. Additionally, as the number of studies published in JPSP increased each year during the four-year period examined, there may be a potential rise in representatively sound studies and decrease of misrepresentation within this discipline.

Abstract:
Diagnostic practices utilized in studies of participants with Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge-Eating Disorder were investigated. A reliable coding system was used by two reviewers to analyze the diagnostic documentation practices in articles from the top-thirty most cited articles for each diagnostic category. Interrater agreements were all above .95. Results showed that many important diagnostic practices and criteria are either not being employed or not being documented. Uniform reporting procedures are necessary to help readers know how each articles sampling procedure and subject pool differs from other samples used in the literature. Researchers reported the most details about sample characteristics with the recently proposed Binge-Eating Disorder category. Discussion focuses on identifying the specific diagnostic and sampling procedures deserving better documentation in the eating disorder literatures.

Level, Marie. Paris 5, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011PA05L001.

Abstract:
This research aims to shed light on the relationship between the constituent objects of a particular activity and the subjects who do it; in this case, sport. To carry out this project, three sporting activities chosen for their different internal logic are being considered through a transdisciplinary approach combining the methods and concepts of ethnology, sociology and the science of motor action (motor praxeology): rhythmic gymnastics, basket-ball, and sprint kayak. This ethnographic study set in a practical situation aims to describe and analyze the importance of the relations to objects in the process of subjectification of the sportsman/woman. A look at the material culture specific to each discipline reveals not only that it is the major substratum of motor behaviors, but also that the sensory, motor and emotional relations that the subject establishes with the objects - sometimes with a remarkable intensity - affect him/her to the utmost in his/her subjectivity

Madrazo, Vanessa Lynn. "Identity, Purpose, and Well-Being Among Emerging Adult Hispanic Women." FIU Digital Commons, 2014. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/context/etd/article/2615/type/native/viewcontent.

Full text
Abstract:
Few studies apply the Eriksonian model of identity formation to cross-cultural samples (3), even though issues of ethnicity and culture may inform a Hispanic woman’s self-concept (Phinney, 1996). Hispanic women may also be influenced by traditional gender role behaviors such as passivity or dependence that are outlined by marianismo (Stevens, 1973). A recent study of a multiethnic sample of emerging adult women and men found that purpose commitment mediated the effects of identity commitment on hope and life satisfaction (Burrow & Hill, 2011). The current research consists of two studies that replicate and expand upon the work of Burrow and Hill (2011). Study I replicated the work of Burrow and Hill (2011) among a sample of emerging adult Hispanic women, in order to assess the extent to which the original findings would replicate in a culturally distinct sample. Study II examined the role of marianismo, ethnic identity, and acculturation on identity commitment among emerging adult Hispanic women. Both studies utilized a sample of 532 female undergraduate psychology students, age 18 to 25, who self-identified as Hispanic and submitted data via online surveys. Both studies used self-report, quantitative data which was analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results from Study I indicated good model fit and replicated the findings from Burrow and Hill (2011). Specifically, the direct effect of identity commitment on hope was fully contingent upon an individual’s level of purpose commitment, while the effect of identity commitment on life satisfaction was not contingent upon an individual’s level of purpose commitment. Results from Study II indicated that marianismo, Spanish proficiency, familiarity with Latino culture, and familiarity with American culture demonstrated statistically significant direct effects on identity commitment among emerging adult Hispanic women. Results indicated cultural convergence regarding the association of an individual’s identity with well-being through a sense of purpose. Findings also revealed the role of cultural factors in the extent to which Hispanic women commit to a personal identity. Future studies should employ mixed method research designs as a means to better ascertain implications of findings.

Thesis, Paris, CNAM, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012CNAM0784/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This research is in the field of reliability of complex socio-technical systems and aims to develop a new approach to allow trade-offs between performance and safety: engineering resilience. The ability of systems to cope with disturbances ultimately depends on the operators of these systems. They must make trade-offs between criteria that may conflict: immediate economic criteria (i.e. to ensure business performance), safety criteria (i.e. give up to meet the immediate production objective). The thesis focuses on the activity of an airline’s operators, in charge of assistance via telephone for aircrew who report a technical complaint. It can be treated immediately; is it benign, or conversely should it lead to the cancellation of the flight? The thesis assumes that in an ultra-safe and ultra rule-based system, conflicts between safety and performance occur when the "rule-based safety" conflicts with "adaptative safety". To defend this thesis, three empirical studies have been implemented. Thus, several methods were used in combination: observation and activity analysis, simulation of activities, questionnaires and auto-confrontation.The results obtained allowed at first to objectify the trade-offs between performance and safety, then in a second instance to identify the criteria governing such trade-offs and explain the processes that underlie them. These results permit, on one hand, to propose acceptable solutions such as the feedback by comparing the practices and assimilate the “adaptative safety” as a subset of “rule-based safety”, and on the other hand to overcome our negative view of violations by treating them as a form of operators’ intelligence in action

Abstract:

Abstract:
The phenomena of "sportivization" of contemporary societies and the development of information and communication technologies have enabled sports brands to rise rapidly and profitably on a global scale. Similarly, the over-mediatization of sport and sports celebrities only increases this trend. More and more people tend to consume emotionally, which underlies individual and collective behaviours. The objective of this thesis is to understand better the behaviours and attitudes of sports consumers (Djiboutians and French) of sports brands. To do this, it uses "social representations" (Moscovici, 1961) as an analytical "grid" that will make it possible to highlight, on the one hand, the shared cognitions of consumers and, on the other hand, the marketing strategies put in place by companies. This work will make it possible to compare the sports relations of the two groups of different subjects from a socio-cultural point of view, in this case French and Djibouti sportsmen and women. Two exploratory studies, one qualitative (semi-directive interview) and the other quantitative (free association of words), made it possible to collect the first data sets from Djiboutians and French athletes (footballers and athletes). The first exploratory study revealed the categories of discourse. The second study defined the scope and structure of social representations. Finally, a confirmatory study, using a structural equation model, made it possible to test all the hypotheses according to brands, sports practised and the national affiliation of groups. In the end, the results did not reveal any significant differences between Adidas and Nike. Similarly, a dichotomy has not been established between the social representations of athletes and the social representations of footballers. On the other hand, there are contrasts between athletes' representations according to their national affiliation

Lazarova, Guergana. Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012AIXM1020.

Full text
Abstract:
The principle of impartiality is essentially treate by the French jurists under the angle of the impressive jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights. Nevertheless, the international origin of this principle remained unexplored. This study shows that the impartiality is a recurring requirement in the speeches on the justice, and it since the Antiquit. In spite of its philosophic obvious fact, the juridicisation of the principle of impartiality showed itself sinuous and uneven through the history and the legal cultures (Civilian /Common law). The peculiarities of the political system of the United Kingdom so explain the direct applicability of the principle in the motocross from the origins of Common law. On the other hand, in French law, its explicit consecration was late and provoked by the article 6 EHCR

Meschino, Lisa. "Studying Journal Articles under Time Pressure." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/6141.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to understand how students distribute their attention while reading academic journal articles under time pressure. Given that most of the reading done in university is commonly time-sensitive and task-dependent, this dissertation explores how students actually shift their attention across the discrete sections of a journal article in the available time to identify and extract task-relevant information. Addressing gaps in the literature, the experiments in this dissertation observe the impact of the following three factors on strategic shifts in attention during study: (1) varied time conditions; (2) the presence/absence of summary information; and (3) the experience of the reader in terms of education level. The experimental methods used in this series of studies are consistent across all three chapters. Participants are given two 5-page academic journal articles to read on cognitive psychology for an impending test. Participants’ eye movement data are analyzed for the total adjusted viewing time the eyes spend in each section of the article, i.e., viewing time in each section was divided by the number of words in each section. The experiments in Chapter 2 examine overt attention when studying with and without a time constraint. Participants were given either 2 minutes of study time or unlimited study time. Analyses of the eye movement data reveal a reduced reading effect both when study time is restricted and unlimited. Specifically, the results showed that as time progresses, participants tend to read less and skim more, with the largest amount of adjusted time being spent on the Abstract. Chapter 3 examines further the apparent importance of the Abstract when reading under time constraint. It investigates whether people allocate more attention to the Abstract relative to other sections of the journal article based on its position or its summary content. Also, Chapter 3 explores whether the presence of an Abstract impacts what people read next in the article. Participants are given a limited time in which to read one of two versions of the articles to read, one version with an Abstract, the other without. The findings show that position, rather than summary content, seems to explain the amount of adjusted viewing time on the Abstract. Additionally, the summary information contained in an Abstract impacts what people read next in the article. Chapter 4 examines the extent to which participants’ education level impacts their use of a skimming strategy for studying. Here, participants form three different groups based on their year of study: graduates, senior undergraduates (3rd and 4th year), and junior undergraduates (1st and 2nd year). Overall, the results suggest that, when studying journal articles under time pressure, skimming behaviour changes from a primarily linear-skimming strategy (reading from beginning to end) to a more targeted-skimming strategy with increased education level. Finally, in the General Discussion in Chapter 5, a summary of the findings of this dissertation is considered in light of the literature on complex factors that impact attention and information-gain. The chapter also outlines hypotheses for future testing of overt attention while reading journal articles under time pressure.

Although death is an inevitable process, thinking or talking about death and dying can be uncomfortable, daunting and confronting for people. There are very few studies that have investigated the circumstances of how the newspaper media portrays when and how death is discussed. The newspaper media both reflect and influence what and how topics are talked about between individuals. A qualitative content analysis was conducted to determine how the Australian newspaper media portray conversations about death and dying. Newspaper articles regarding conversations about death, dying, and the end of life, from the years 2015 to 2020 were analysed in three largely circulated Australian newspapers (The Age, The Australian and the Herald Sun). These dates were chosen as 2017 was the year that the Assisted Dying Act first passed through Victorian parliament. This allowed for talk of death to be analysed before, during, and after that event. The theoretical lens of “Terror Management Theory” and Endler and Parker’s theory of coping (1994) informed the analysis to better understand the ways in which people discuss death and the prospect of their own and others’ mortality. Seventeen categories were found from the data which were generated from sixty-nine subcodes. This research contributes to our understanding about who, where and how death and dying are portrayed, and what psychological mechanisms might be advertently and inadvertently encouraged and discouraged, through death’s portrayal in the media.

Abstract:

This ethnographic project delves into the spheres of life of three autistic adults and their families. This thesis analyzes their experiences, current routines, and personal and family narratives about what it means to be an autistic adult across different identities and geographies. This thesis also identifies forms of knowledge that arise in these life experiences and shape strategies, decisions, or attitudes taken to navigate through life or overcome possible difficulties in their present and futures. This research takes place in Colombia, a diverse country and engages with anthropology of the everyday, sensory anthropology and disability studies.
