Abstract:
A systematic description of psychological types is given based on the generally accepted classifications of K. G. Jung, N. McWilliams, K. Leongard, A. E. Lichko, and P. B. gannushkin. It is shown that the known types of neurotic and accentuated personalities are varieties of seven basic psychological types. This typology finds its correspondence in well-known systematizations of needs, emotions, mental States, and defenses. The book is addressed to psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, teachers and students of psychological and medical universities, as well as those interested in personality psychology.

Abstract:
Psychological disturbances occur throughout Type1 diabetes, from diagnosis to the experience of late tissue complications. Serious life events may precipitate diabetes onset. All parents of newly diagnosed children report stress. Poor glycaemic control is associated with suboptimal school performance, but children do not consider their own quality of life to be poor. Depression during adolescence is no more common than in the background population. Single parenthood and minority ethnicity are associated with worse glycaemic outcomes. Poor glycaemia associated with poor family functioning can be helped by family-based interventions. Eating disorders are not more frequent in diabetes, but disordered eating and insulin omission are prevalent, the last associated with increased mortality. Depression is common, often severe, undiagnosed, and associated with maternal depression. Non-pharmacological treatment is more effective than antidepressants. Diabetic complications increase the risk of depression 2- to 3-fold, and all depressive disorders may increase mortality in people with foot ulceration.

Abstract:
This introduction to psychological treatments reviews the range and applications of talking therapies with older people. Reminiscence therapy is described and reference is made to the therapies addressed in later chapters. The potential benefits of psychological therapy are discussed with guidance on applying findings from clinical trials to individual patients. The wider benefits of an understanding of psychological approaches are outlined; these include use of psychological formulations and augmenting the effects of psychotropic medication. The status of psychological treatment services for older people is reviewed and barriers to access are considered.

Abstract:
Disorders of the psyche (particularly depression and anxiety) are relatively common amongst children with life-limiting conditions. Most of the tools available for evaluating or assessing them in palliative medicine were developed for adults, as were strategies for treating them. The ideal practice is to collaborate with local child and adolescent mental health services in the management of all such children. This chapter covers management of psychological conditions, including depression, anxiety, insomnia, and terminal delirium. For each symptom, causes or general points are detailed, with recommendations on pharmacological approaches covered in detail.

Abstract:
This chapter examines John Locke's notion of psychological connectedness. It suggests that Locke is interested in the (nontransitive) relation of psychological connectedness, and not interested in the (transitive) relation of memory-link-based psychological continuity that has drawn the attention of many of the “neo-Lockeans.” It also suggests the psychological connectedness that matters to Locke is narrower—more fine-grained—than psychological connectedness as ordinarily understood; and this is not simply because consciousness is not the same as memory. The chapter concludes by considering Locke's theory of personal identity as a theory of moral responsibility—given the assumption that the notion of moral responsibility is a coherent one at all.

Abstract:
Chapter 8 asks what properties a market economy must have if it is to be psychologically stable—that is, if it is to reproduce a general belief that its governing principles are fair. I argue that, because of the division of knowledge and because the opportunities open to each person depend on how other people choose to use their opportunities, full equality of opportunity is not compatible with a market economy. Psychological stability has to rest on continuing expectations of mutual benefit, defined relative to a baseline that evolves over time and that cannot be justified in terms of abstract principles of fairness. However, if the market is to be recommended to each individual separately, each individual must be able to expect to share in the benefits that markets create. Maintaining such expectations typically requires redistributive mechanisms.
