Abstract:
Aims of study. The aim of this study was to investigate the theoretical foundations of psychological support for women in childbirth during midwifery activities. Results. An important condition for increasing the efficiency of the treatment process is not only taking into account the patient’s psychological peculiarities, but also providing psychological support to patients during medical care, in particular midwifery activity. Research on different aspects of psychological support is noted in the works of domestic and foreign psychologists who reveal the humanistic ideas of personal development interaction, requiring building a subject-subject relationship in the process of communication. A number of publications are presented in the modern literature concerning the role of psychological support in professional midwifery activities. According to the authors, this area is an important professional responsibility of obstetrician service staff. A special role is played by the psychological support of patients during childbirth. The relationship of the characteristics of the birth process with the emotional state of mothers is noted in modern literature. Psychological support for women in childbirth should be given with the knowledge of the patients’ specific psychological characteristics in this period. The state of consciousness of a woman in childbirth is one of the important psychological factors that require the attention of medical personnel. The altered state of consciousness (ASC) in childbirth, which has an adaptive role, is important for both active labor and reducing pain sensitivity in childbirth. A maladaptive ASC, on the contrary, interferes with the birth process and increase pain sensitivity. Depending on the activity, the psychological component of the generic dominant will manifest itself in an adaptive or maladaptive ASC, with psychological support for women during childbirth contributing to the activation of an adaptive ASC. Conclusion. Analysis of the psychological characteristics of women during childbirth showed the importance of considering the state of consciousness of the patient and the activity of the psychological component of the generic dominant when determining the strategy of psychological support.

Abstract:
Canada is a diverse and multicultural country. More than one fifth of Canadians are foreign-born individuals from over 200 countries (Statistics Canada, 2017a). Whereas diversity and official multiculturalism makes Canada attractive for immigrants, the newcomers nonetheless face challenges in the areas of settlement, employment, and access to mental health services. These challenges are particularly acute for immigrant children. This article describes four major challenges related to the provision of psychological services to immigrant children and suggests potential solutions for each of these four challenges. The article concludes with the suggestion of a multilevel approach to address these challenges, and the collaborative inclusion of relevant stakeholders.

Abstract:
The article treats the issue of young children’s social and psychological adaptation to preschool environment. The relevance of the research is accounted for by the requirements stipulated in the Federal Law on Education in the Russian Federation of 29.12.2012 no 273-ФЗ (chapter 7, article 64) and associated with the necessity of providing favorable environments for young children’s development and social adaptation aimed at the preservation and improvement of their health. The aim of the research is to explore the content and procedure of young children’s social and psychological adaptation and their psychological and pedagogical development. The article presents the results of an empirical research aimed at the investigation of the content and procedure of young children’s psychological adaptation to preschool environment. It also presents the results of a research aimed at the investigation of the conceptual and empirical foundation of young children’s psychological and pedagogical adaptation to preschool environment through the prism of subject-activity approach and person-cantered approach as leading approaches of Russian psychology. The authors of the article hypothesize that the efficiency of programs aimed at young children’s social and psychological adaptation closely depends on the following components: emotion and motivation (the creation of an emotionally favourable atmosphere, removal of emotional strain, reduction of impulsiveness, anxiety and aggression); content and goal (the development of communication skills, the creation of favourable conditions for children’s communication, the instigation of cooperation, the development of game playing skills and arbitrary behaviour, the development of formal and informal communication skills); activity and implementation (game activities, reflexive activities, drawing ad painting activities, fairytale therapy, fingerplays, body therapy), monitoring and assessment (monitoring and evaluating adaptation at cognitive, physiological, social, behavioural and personal levels). The authors use empirical data gathered during the concluding stage of an experiment involving 33 young children (2-3-year olds attending junior kindergarten groups), 3 teachers, and 33 parents to analyze factors affecting young children’ adaptation to preschool environment. The results of the research can be used to develop a program of young children’s social and psychological adaptation. The authors summarize the main principles of the program of young children’s social and psychological adaptation which was employed in the experiment; they assess its efficiency and evaluate the potential of its further application.

Rasskazova), the method of life meaningful orientation by D.O. Leontiev, questionnaire “The idea of information and psychological safety” by T.O. Basanova. Spearman’s correlation method and U. Mann-Whitney’s test were used for statistical analysis. According to the results of the study, it was found that the level of the students’ vitality in their 1-4 years was average but a significant increase in indicators was found in those who were in their third year. Peculiarities of the students’ life awareness with different levels of vitality are revealed. Besides, the connections between the indicators of vitality and the components of life meaningful orientations of testees’ are presented. The level of information-and-psychological safety of students and its connection with vital indicators is investigated. That is, vitality as a resource stimulates the activity of students and can ensure their psychological safety in modern realities.

Abstract:
The provision of effective assistance to minors in crisis situations is a complex task for specialists of different specialties. To define the patterns of providing crisis psychological assistance to adolescents with anti-vital experiences and self-injurious behavior depending on the stage of development of crisis states, 60 adolescents (24 boys and 36 girls, the average age was 15.7±6 years ) were examined by a therapist in medical and psychological services in Moscow. Analysis of the obtained data allowed to identify three groups of adolescents differing in personal characteristics, the peculiarities of response in a traumatic situation and structure of manifestations of suicidal markers, anti-vital and auto-aggressive trends: sensitive-schizoid/narcissistic (25%), emotionally unstable/borderline (45%), depressive/obsessive-compulsive (30%). Tree stages of development of crisis states are considered: acute, sub-acute and chronic. Depending on the actual stage of the crisis state the authors described the strategies of psychological intervention. The proposed structure of providing psychological assistance to minors in crisis situations allows to organize the structural and dynamic features of various stages of rendering psychiatric assistance, but also increases the likelihood of a favorable prognosis due to the unified efforts of different specialists

Abstract:
Background. In many countries frontline emergency workers of different specialties face the need to inform people of their relatives’ death and to support them during the acute period following the message. The need for psychological training in this area is evident. However, the research in this area is not only complicated in terms of logistics, but also hindered by a number of ethical difficulties. The analysis presented in this paper has significant practical value and draws on the unique professional perspective of the EMERCOM emergency psychologists who provide psychological support to people experiencing loss in an acute period — relatives and loved ones of those who died in emergencies. Objective. To give an outline of approaches to psychological support in cases of loss, of the factors influencing adaptation to a loss, and of the opportunities for early psychological interventions. Design. The theoretical overview presents the analysis of foreign experience and main approaches to announcing the death of a relative. The following section describes and analyses the main approaches and practical experience of the EMERCOM psychologists. The conclusion outlines the possibilities of a systematic approach to providing emergency psychological aid in cases of loss. Results. The study presents a list of characteristics of support providers, recipients and situations that need to be taken into account when choosing a strategy of work with people experiencing a recent loss. Conclusion. The study allows to single out three main thematic blocks, the consideration of which is necessary when choosing a strategy for dealing with loss in an acute period. First, features of the situation; second, characteristics of the person experiencing loss; third, the characteristic of the support provider. The process of psychological support, as described in the paper, includes assessment and consideration of the objective characteristics of the situation, the recipient’s characteristics and response, and the characteristics of the specialist himself. The interpretation of relationship between these factors and their influence on the condition of the person who experiences a loss allows the psychologist to choose the most effective strategy for providing psychological support.

Abstract:
ObjectiveTo explore patients’ and nurses’ views on the feasibility and acceptability of providing psychological care within cardiac rehabilitation services.DesignIn-depth interviews analysed thematically.Participants18 patients and 7 cardiac nurses taking part in a pilot trial (CADENCE) of an enhanced psychological care intervention delivered within cardiac rehabilitation programmes by nurses to patients with symptoms of depression.SettingCardiac services based in the South West of England and the East Midlands, UK.ResultsPatients and nurses viewed psychological support as central to good cardiac rehabilitation. Patients’ accounts highlighted the significant and immediate adverse effect a cardiac event can have on an individual’s mental well-being. They also showed that patients valued nurses attending to both their mental and physical health, and felt this was essential to their overall recovery. Nurses were committed to providing psychological support, believed it benefited patients, and advocated for this support to be delivered within cardiac rehabilitation programmes rather than within a parallel healthcare service. However, nurses were time-constrained and found it challenging to provide psychological care within their existing workloads.ConclusionsBoth patients and nurses highly value psychological support being delivered within cardiac rehabilitation programmes but resource constraints raise barriers to implementation. Consideration, therefore, should be given to alternative forms of delivery which do not rely solely on nurses to enable patients to receive psychological support during cardiac rehabilitation.Trial registration numberISCTRN34701576.

Abstract:
Leadership styles in work contexts play a role in employees’ well-being, contributing to better health or, on the contrary, being a source of stress. In this study we propose that security providing leadership may be considered as a resource to prevent employees’ job burnout. First, we examine the relationship between employees’ perception of their leader’s degree of security in providing leadership and the employees’ degree of job-related burnout. Second, the underlying processes by which leaders as security providers exert their influence on burnout are analyzed with a focus on the mediating role of two variables: an organizational climate oriented to psychological safety and organizational dehumanization. A total of 655 Spanish employees (53.7% women) completed a paper-and-pencil self-report questionnaire. To recruit participants, we employed an exponential non-discriminative snowball sampling. Results, using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to test hypotheses, show that security providing leadership was related negatively to burnout. Furthermore, psychological safety climate and organizational dehumanization mediated the relationship between security providing leadership and burnout. These findings support the attachment approach to leadership and open new avenues for creating better organizational environments. Security-providing leaders, by supporting employees and treating them in a personalized way, can enhance the psychological safety climate and prevent organizational dehumanization and consequent job burnout.

Abstract:
The expected increasing demand for informal care in aging societies underscores the importance of understanding the psychological implications of caregiving. This study explores the effect of providing regular help with personal care to a partner on different aspects of psychological well-being. We use cross-sectional data from the Norwegian Life Course, Ageing and Generation study (n. ~15,000; age 40-84) and two-wave panel data from the Norwegian study on Life Course, Ageing and Generation (n. ~3000; age 40-84). To separate the effects of providing care from those of the partner’s disability, caregivers are contrasted with non-caregivers with both disabled and nondisabled partners. We separate outcomes into cognitive well-being (life satisfaction), psychological functioning (self-esteem, mastery), and affective well-being (happiness, depression, loneliness). Findings show that caregiving has important cross-sectional and longitudinal detrimental psychological effects. These effects are fairly consistent across all aspects of well-being, demonstrating that caregiving has a broad-based negative impact. Among women, however, these effects are similar to if not weaker than the effects of a partner’s disability. Caregiving effects are constant by age, education, and employment status, but stronger among caregivers with health problems. Providing personal care to a partner is associated with marked adverse psychological effects for men and women irrespective of age and socio-economic status. Hence, no socio-demographic group is immune from caregiving stress, so programs should be targeted generally. The results also suggest that the health needs of caregivers demand more attention.

Air crashesAttention is focused on providing care to the relatives (identifying the bodies of the perished, talking to investigators, filling out the requisite documentation, etc.), resolving social issues (organizing funerals, informing various services of what had happened, etc.).FiresSpecial attention is paid to the victims with burns at the inpatient facilities of hospitals.Terrorist actsProvision of care depends on the duration of the emergency and the number of people involved; in the case of a continual stress, in the phase of isolation the medical-psychological care is provided to victims’ relatives. At later stages–it is provided to the victims and their relatives.Natural disastersAre of a special nature, as they are always sudden and there exists a threat that a great number of people may become victims.Organizational measures in the acute period of an emergency:– coordinating the work of specialists of the local, regional and federal level;– interacting with non-governmental organizations;– setting up a 24-hour “hotline” service (“HL”) on the basis of a medical institution;– deploying facilities for providing care to victims, their relatives, and to “secondary victims”.Principles of medical-psychological care:– urgent care must be provided jointly with psychiatrists/psychotherapists at the places, where the victims are located;– individuals with the most severe stress reactions must be identified and observed by psychiatrists/psychotherapists;– appropriate and prompt intervention should be made to relieve acute stress disorders;– therapeutic interventions should not be a hindrance to victims’ participation in the urgent evacuation and interrogation expedients as well as completing social tasks.Disclosure of interestThe author has not supplied his declaration of competing interest.

Abstract:
Background: Patients with advanced illness often have high rates of psychological symptoms. Many multicomponent palliative care intervention studies have investigated the efficacy of overall symptom reduction; however, little research has focused explicitly on how interventions address psychological symptoms associated with serious illness. Methods: The current study reviewed 59 multicomponent palliative care intervention articles and analyzed the mental health components of palliative care interventions and their outcomes in order to better understand the current state of psychological care in palliative care. Results: The majority of articles (69.5%) did not provide any details regarding the psychological component delivered as part of the palliative care intervention. Most (54.2%) studies did not specify which provider on the team was responsible for providing the psychological intervention. Studies varied regarding the type of outcome measure utilized; multi-symptom assessment scales were used in 54.2% of studies, mental health scales were employed in 25.4%, quality of life and distress scales were used in 16.9%, and no psychological scales were reported in 28.8%. Fewer than half the studies (42.4%) documented a change in a psychological outcome. Discussion and Conclusion: The majority of analyzed studies failed to describe how psychological symptoms were identified and treated, which discipline on the team provided the treatment, and whether psychological symptoms improved as a result of the intervention. Future research evaluating the effects of palliative care interventions on psychological symptoms will benefit from using reliable and valid psychological outcome measures and providing specificity regarding the psychological components of the intervention and who provides it.

One purpose of cognitive-behaviour therapy is to provide patients with a ‘psychological model’ of their illness; this would enable them to become aware of, and thereby gain insight into the ways that the symptoms and behavioural deviances they exhibit, and the circumstances of the onset of illness are actually related to their previous experience and social learning (for overview see Hawton et al, 1989). This concept provides a basis for gaining greater insight into special therapeutic interventions, and should help patients to develop their own lifetime methods of coping with problems.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Spousal loss, common in older age, has been linked to negative mental health outcomes and well-being, yet the mechanisms linking spousal loss and mental health are still unclear. Objective To investigate whether physical activity, social support, and gender modify the psychological distress effects of marital loss among community-dwelling older persons in Ghana. Methods Data from a 2016/2017 Ageing, Health, Psychological Well-being, and Health-seeking Behavior Study (N = 1,200) were examined. OLS regression models examined associations between spousal loss and psychological distress outcomes and interaction terms. Results Spousal loss (widowhood and divorce/separation) was associated with psychological distress (measured by the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale [KPDS-10]) for the full sample (β = .798, p < .001), women (β = .831, p < .001) and for men (β = .533, p < .05). After adjusting for potential confounders, the associations between spousal loss and psychological distress persisted for the full sample (β = .727, p < .001) and females only (β = .730, p < .001). In particular, when experiencing spousal loss, those with meaningful social support (β = −.856, p < .005) and engaged in physical activity (β = −.258, p < .001) were less likely to be psychologically distressed. Conclusions Spousal loss precipitates an independent risk of psychological distress in older age particularly among women, but social support and physical activity engagements moderate the relationship. These findings support the premise that providing opportunities to improve social support and regular physical activity may buffer the effects of psychological distress among older persons experiencing spousal loss. Providing support for older adults in times of divorce and widowhood, and working towards changes in social attitudes towards divorce are important considerations.
