Abstract:
This chapter explains that helping people with mental health problems requires a professional worker to have a clear understanding of the person and their problems in their own context and history. The author uses his own experience of psychological problems and history of professional care. He was helped initially with his history and social circumstances and overcame a major depression and returned to his paid job. But problems remained until it was discovered that on the biological level they had to address a handicap—the handicap of Asperger syndrome. This meant that they could not ignore a biological factor. Conversely, when we look only at biological factors and do not understand them against the framework of their meaning in an individual’s life history and social context we can make serious mistakes and even traumatize people. This is the author’s second narrative.
