Milton, Christopher. "A phenomenological hermeneutic investigation into the psychoanalytic psychotherapist's experience of using the psychoanalytic couch." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1007655.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to describe and critically explore the psychoanalytic, psychotherapist's lived experience of the technique of using the couch. Through examination of the literature a question was formulated that would disclose the analyst's experience of the technique of using the couch. Four experienced psychoanalytic practitioners who could be operationally defined as 'analysts' were interviewed. Using a phenomenological method the protocols were comprehensively analyzed to produce descriptions of the general structure of the experience. These were then texturally enhanced using interleaved direct citations from the interviews. The structural and textural 'findings ' so produced were then hermeneutically dialogued with contemporary psychoanalytic notions of critical discourse and intersubjectivity. The phenomenological ' findings ' of the study disclosed the meaning of the couch as context-based, paradoxical and ambiguous. The couch was found to be a symbol of the analyst as analyst and the process as authentic analysis. Furthermore, at its best, the couch was found to mediate a mode of being that is containing and intimate and in which psychological life may be evoked, tracked and interpreted. The most significant contributor to this mode of being was found to be privacy, which, in particular, helps the analyst maintain an analytic attitude. The couch was also found to be significantly implicated in the generation of an intersubjective analytic third and to support reverie. These 'findings' were hermeneutically dialogued with literature on the couch as well as contemporary psychoanalytic theoretical notions. The dialogue fell into three foci. The first focus entailed deconstructing the meaning of the couch as context-based and ambiguous and not essential. The second pursued critiques of the role that the couch plays in domination, of its function as a symbol/evocative object and of the way in which it shapes being-together, bodily attunement, privacy, the intersubjective analytic third and reverie. Finally the 'findings' were critically examined in terms of both Lacan's notion 'analytic discourse ' and its role in revealing/concealing the analysand as subject. The study concludes with an examination of its own limitations and suggestions for further research.

Abstract:
The present essay attempts a psychoanalytic interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jay Gatsby’s id, superego, ego, and core issues. The first stage of the paper offers an analysis of Gatsby’s id, superego and ego; and finds that the id largely rules his behaviour, with few instances where the ego takes control and manifests the superego. The second stage proposes that three psychoanalytic core issues are identifiable in the character of Gatsby: fear of abandonment, low self-esteem and insecure or unstable sense of self. Through the lens of Psychoanalytic Criticism, the present essay looks at fictional literature in order to gain insight into the human psyche, in hopes of discussing and spreading awareness about mental health.

Macdonald, Shawn E. (Shawn Earl). "Wordsworth's spots of time : a psychoanalytic study of revision." Thesis, McGill University, 1992. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=60663.

Full text
Abstract:
In the introductory definition of spots of time, Wordsworth claims that these important childhood episodes are virtuous and worthy of celebration. This definition is incongruous with the episodes considered independently, because they reveal themselves as essentially disturbing memories. As he revised the spots of time, Wordsworth attempted to mitigate the disturbing nature of the episodes, betraying his need to repress certain undesireable aspects of the early texts.
The following study is a Freudian reading of Wordsworth's spots of time in their various stages of revision. The Introduction to this study addresses some of the problems of interpretation. Chapter One places a Freudian reading of Wordsworth within the context of previous scholarship. Chapter Two is a close reading of the earliest spots of time as informed by Oedipal memories. Chapter Three examines Wordsworth's attempt, through revision, to repress these Oedipal memories.

Le, Page Carol Ann. "A Theoretical Investigation of the Psychoanalytic Process Working Through." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Psychology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6000.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis theoretically investigated the psychoanalytic process working through with the purpose of clarifying and refining the concept. The literature on working through and its elements, resistance and interpretation was examined. The concepts of working through of the school of ego psychology, the school of object relations and the school of self psychology were compared. Theoretical analysis involved explaining the working through process by simple analogy. My findings were that working through decreases the patient's defensive anxieties through the medium of words. This explanation applies to all three schools. In addition, a model of psychic development was derived, which integrates the theories of the ego school, the object relations school, and the school of self psychology.

Höglund, Sebastian. "A Lacanian Psychoanalytic Feminist Interpretation of Marie in Louise Erdrich’s Love Medicine." Thesis, Högskolan i Gävle, Avdelningen för humaniora, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-26141.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an analysis of Marie’s struggle for empowerment within a patriarchal system in Louise Erdrich’s Love Medicine. The main focus of this thesis is the untangling of Marie’s desire: why does she choose the path that she has taken in life and why is she seemingly unable to feel content? Marie’s life takes place within a patriarchal framework and this paper utilizes feminist theory to delineate this framework and demonstrate its oppressiveness. In order to untangle Marie’s desire, this paper also employs a Lacanian psychoanalytic perspective. The object of Marie’s desire seems to be to become empowered within patriarchal society, but she is socially castrated by its gatekeeper, Leopolda. Even though Marie attempts a different path to empowerment, she is unable to be satisfied until she confronts Leopolda once more. In typical Lacanian fashion the object of her desire keeps returning until its form becomes clear: the object of her social castration, that is, the “phallic” spoon.

Berg, Daniel F. "Pluralism, religious bias and pathologizing: The interpretation and use of D. W. Winnicott's theories in the psychoanalytic study of religion." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/4343.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a close analysis of the work of five scholars in psychology of religion, scholars who have incorporated elements of D. W. Winnicott's psychoanalytic object relations theories into their own work. In this group of five there are three who pioneered the use of Winnicott in psychology of religion and two whose work is more recent. The point of my research is to demonstrate how religious bias affects the interpretation and use of Winnicott by scholars of religion, or more positively, to assess to what degree these scholars can appreciate the experiences of those whose values and religiosity differ from their own. I demonstrate that the religious psychologists who pioneered the use of Winnicott tend to pathologize those experiences and groups that diverge from their own ideals and I argue that this tendency contaminates their interpretation of his theories. Fortunately I have not found this tendency in the work of the other two more contemporary psychologists of religion. The political use of pathologizing is not new to analytic circles. Analysts of the psychoanalytic movement show how readily proponents of a new stream of interpretation or the establishment that resists the new approaches get pathologized: reformers are pathologized by the mainstream and vice versa. What I am seeking is an approach to helping that does not pathologize because of religious differences, but rather seeks to release the healing potential within the individual and his or her own system of belief. I am not the first to diagnose religious bias in the work of psychology of religion scholars. In response to the prevalence of what he calls "religious psychologists" in psychology of religion, and the corresponding problems of religious bias, Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi has pioneered the use of the label "ethnocentric," an anthropological term arising from the evaluation of anthropologists' work with people from other cultures, as a word to describe how religious bias affects scholarly activity in psychology of religion. Beit-Hallahmi like others who have identified this type of problem recommends that biographical factors and the scholar's religious affiliation and definition of religion be used as analytical tools for better comprehending a psychologist of religion's theories. In keeping with this recommendation and perhaps new trend in psychology of religion, I, as a means to better contextualize these five scholars' use of Winnicott, pay close attention to the biographical material that can be obtained for each of them as well of course as for Winnicott himself. In my interpretation of Winnicott, I find his approach to be the antithesis of ethnocentric, religiously biased pathologizing, both in his life experiences when he himself was subject to this kind of political analytical denigration, as well as in his clinical and theoretical approaches. I find Winnicott to be a pluralist, one who believed that the cultural creations of humankind are infinitely varied and not subject to classification. Unfortunately, several psychoanalytic scholars of religion have introduced pathological distinctions into Winnicott's interpretations of the human condition, and it is the work of this thesis to carefully analyse these innovations situating them in their religious contexts. Fortunately, there are also more pluralistic and less ethnocentric uses of Winnicott's theory, and building on these and my own analysis of Winnicott I conclude with suggestions for a more humane and enriching psychoanalysis of religion. Abstract:
This work is an interpretation of Amós Ozs novel and its starting point is the identification of traumatic aspects in this narrative. This consideration, in its turn, springs from the reading experience. The theoretical discussion based on an interdisciplinary conceptualization of the traumatic and on the notion of strangeness as a necessary procedure for the interpretation has also sprung from the reading. The procedures and concepts used here work as a border for the dissonances and alterity of the novel, for what I define as traces of the traumatic. Psychoanalysis is present as a hearing place for these dissonances

Abstract:

In this paper I have strived to provide a new view on a timeless classic of children’s literature, Winnie-The-Pooh. In psychoanalytic literary criticism concepts and theories of psychoanalysis is implemented while interpreting literature; in this paper, I have interpreted the novel incorporating concepts of the psychoanalytic schools of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan while arguing that the denizens of the Hundred Acre Wood are manifestations of parts of the narrator’s unconscious. The first two sections of the paper present the theories and concepts of the two major schools of psychoanalysis as an introduction aimed at increasing the readability of the interpretation. The individual interpretations of each character are then presented separately, every section in some way involving psychoanalytic theory. Kanga, Roo, Piglet, Winnie-the-Pooh, Christopher Robin, Rabbit, Owl and Eeyore are shown to be repressed memories, feelings or thoughts. Included theoretical concepts are the Oedipus complex, the sexual development of infants, the journey of children towards consciousness, Lacanian desire and lack, Freudian dream interpretation and the conception that the unconscious is structured as language, among others.

Abstract:
The importance of insight in people with mental illnesses was first studied in psychiatry, in the first decades of the 20th century, by people as important as Lewis (1934) and Jaspers (1959). However, this field of investigation was left unexplored for many years. Only in the last decade has this phenomenon become the object of numerous scientific investigations, having been given special attention by its investigators. For this reason a significant number of instruments for evalauting insight in psychotic disorders were developed. Since then many papers have been published, which has allowed for a more in depth knowledge on the subject. Therefore, in recent years, the concept of insight has been developed in an attempt to clarify its compexity. A once dichotomic phenomenon, described in terms of presence or absence, became considered multidimensional, which made the identification of different levels of insight and different dimensions possible. Current concepts categorize insight into five dimensions: the awareness of the patient in relation to his/her mental illness, the awareness of the patient in relation to the social consequences of his/her illness, the awareness of the need for treatment, the awareness of the symptoms and the explanation of those symptoms in relation to the illness. The lack of insight in psychiatry, in general terms, and as this phenomenon has been described, the lack of awareness of having a mental illness, represents one of the most common symptoms of schizophrenia and affects a big part of the population that suffer from this illness. It is estimated that bewteen 50 and 80 per cent of patients with schizophrenia do not believe that they are ill, which, consequently has a big impact in the process of adherence to treatment. It is still not possible, however, to identify all the factors that determine the lack of insight in schizophrenics. There are psychological, social and cultural influences that almost certainly play their role in the lack of insight registered in this pathology.Since the impact of scizophrenia is felt in many aspects of the individual’s life, its effective treatment should be directed at various levels, including the improvement of insight. One of the objectives of this study is to explore the relationship between the level of insight in psychosis and the clinical and sociodemographic variables, the psychopathology and its global functioning. As well as the clinical and sociodemographic variables, there are of course important individual components that contribute to the level of insight seen in each patient, for example, their level of inteligence, personality, culture, past experiences, memory, etc. The clinical, emotional and/or intelectual nature of the term helps us understand the difficulty that lies in its interpretation as well as in its comprehension. Therefore, the definitions attributed to the term are very different and vary according to the theoretical training of the investigator. It is intended, from this identification/understanding, to promote the quality of life of these people through the development of new findings that might enable an active cooperation. It is equally fundamental to observe their unimpaired capacities in order to enable the acquisition of new behaviour(s) that have a positive impact on the complaints, signs, symptoms, incapacity and disfunctioning seen in the patient. As the actual comprehension of the term explains what we intend to evaluate, a detailed reflection is made on the instruments and definitions that have been used the most to explore insight in psychosis. In this investigation I tried to underline and promote the importance that each subject, undergoing medical intervention, plays during his/her process of recovery and prevention of relapses. Considering the above mentioned objectives, as well as a theoretical review of the phenomenon in terms of conceptualization and investigative studies developed, this study contributed to the validation of the instrument. The insight phenomenon chosen by the “Insight Scale”, records less changes experienced in relation to the mental illness and more actual awareness and articulation of these changes. Based on a psychopedagogical approach, the insight phenomenon explored here settled on a rehabilitation, current and multidimensional perspective that would go beyond the traditional clinical dimensions. For this reason an original scale entitled “Insight Evaluation Scale and Need Identification in Psychosis Patients” is presented, as well as a psychopedagogical intervention model soon to be used with admitted patients based on the presuppositions described in this study.

By exploring the logical status of the psychoanalytic object of investigation, the compromise-formation, this dissertation suggests that although Freud's defence of Psychoanalysis as a natural science has been legitimately rejected as problematic, the reconstrual of Psychoanalysis as an interpretive or hermeneutic knowledge is likewise inappropriate to the psychoanalytic object. On the basis of the work of Donald Davidson and Arthur Dante, it is argued instead that the nature and status of Psychoanalysis as a knowledge is best understood and assessed in terms of a third alternative provided by the historical epistemology germane to the psychoanalytic object. In this way, the case against Psychoanalysis as a natural science is granted, while psychoanalytic epistemology is nevertheless defended as explanatory rather than interpretive.

Abstract:
A reading of the first volume of Sigmund Freud's Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis (1916-17 [1915-17]), concentrating on the account of the technique for the interpretation of dreams. In these lectures Freud attempts to elaborate an empirical model for the investigation and explanation of the dream. Closer examination of this argument, however, quickly brings to light certain diffIculties that allow us to question whether the validity of psychoanalytic procedures could ever be sustained in these terms. It is suggested that this account requires the introduction of conditions and assumptions of another order. This argument amounts to a critique of the attempt to provide empirical foundations for certain key psychoanalytic concepts, in favour of a deduction of the validity of those concepts at the level of formal conditions of the technique of interpretation itself. It suggests that the legitimacy of that technique of interpretation depends upon a particular mode of deduction that can be considered characteristic of psychoanalytic procedure in general. The validity of the central concepts of psychoanalysis is then to be considered in terms of the procedure of argument from which their status is derived. Two models of psychoanalytic investigation are considered - an empirical model for the explanation of the dream and a more formal account of the fundamental principles of interpretation. The thesis concludes that these two models are not in fact exclusive but are rather complementary, and that a comprehensive statement of the conditions of validity of the technique of psychoanalytic interpretation can only be achieved through their interaction and articulation. At the same time it attempts to demonstrate that these issues have a fundamental influence upon our conception of the orientation and goals of that technique of interpretation.

Abstract:
This work in two parts – entitled Symbolic Function and Meaning: An Investigation of the Species-Specific Essence of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy – could be characterized as an interpretation of the above-mentioned therapy and the meaning of its particular experience. In the first part, besides a licentiate thesis, four topics are examined: the therapeutic framework, the transference – especially in neurotic form – and its interpretation, psychotherapy with borderline patients, and therapy with psychotics. This has been done by combining studies of literature with analyses of the transference meaning of a number of illuminative clinical examples or vignettes – anecdotes, i.e. narratives with a significant point – the main part of which are the outcome of the author’s own activity in the form of participant observation as a psychotherapist. The general conclusion is that promoting the symbolic function is the essential ingredient in the psychoanalytic form of therapy – its very rationality – and how it effectuates its unique therapeutic potentiality; a characterization which, despite obvious differences in the adequacy of symbolic functioning, is valid irrespective of whether the patient is diagnosed as neurotic, borderline or psychotic. In the second part – essentially of a theoretical nature in contrast to the preceding one – the study is influenced by philosophical hermeneutics, and in this process assimilates its particular conceptuality. The continued analysis of the research object shows that it is misleading, in view of its ontology, to conceptualize it in medical terms as treatment. Aimed at promoting the symbolic function by the transference being interpreted, psychoanalytic psychotherapy instead operates in an ethical dimension and is rather what Aristotle terms a praxis, on the one hand; on the other hand, it is moreover implicitly human science action research into intersubjective appropriation of meaning. In this latter respect, the investigation highlights the fact that the very special interview method in the form of free associations, with their reflexivity, gives the psychoanalytic form of psychotherapy the potential to be not only a qualitative research method but also simultaneously metaresearch. The analyses of the transference meaning of clinical anecdotes in the first part have thereby been able to be methodologically clarified retroactively as psychoanalytic metaresearch.

It also identifies and comments on shortcomings in Kristevan theory. Donaldson's fantasies are dominated by male protagonists, one of whom is a leper while the others are rapists or murderers or else engaged in some form of violence or sexual perversion. This thesis not only offers an interpretation for this representation of disease and gross physical abuse, but also looks to the implication such corporeality brings to bear on the amatory relationships that the novels attempt to establish. "The thesis is organized into three broad sections. The first considers the ways in which the concept of the mother manifests in Donaldson's text and how the male protagonists respond to the maternal dynamic established in these books. Ross, James Alistair. "'Sacred psychoanalysis' : an interpretation of the emergence and engagement of religion and spirituality in contemporary psychoanalysis." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2010. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/1372/.

Full text
Abstract:
From the 1970s the emergence of religion and spirituality in psychoanalysis is a unique development, given its traditional pathologizing stance. This research examines how and why ‘sacred psychoanalysis’ came about and whether this represents a new analytic movement with definable features or a diffuse phenomena within psychoanalysis that parallels developments elsewhere. After identifying the research context, a discussion of definitions and qualitative reflexive methodology follows. An account of religious and spiritual engagement in psychoanalysis in the UK and the USA provides a narrative of key people and texts, with a focus on the theoretical foundations established by Winnicott and Bion. This leads to a detailed examination of the literary narratives of religious and spiritual engagement understood from: Christian; Natural; Maternal; Jewish; Buddhist; Hindu; Muslim; Mystical; and Intersubjective perspectives, synthesized into an interpretative framework of sacred psychoanalysis. Qualitative interviews were then undertaken with leading experts focusing on the lived experience of contemporary psychoanalysts. From a larger sample, eleven interviews were selected for a thematic narrative analysis and from within this sample, six interviews were then the focus of a reflexive intersubjective analysis, utilizing psychoanalytic techniques. This research concludes that three forms of sacred psychoanalysis can be identified embracing a generic framework for theoretical and clinical understanding; a framework for intersubjective presence; and a framework for spiritual/sacred encounter.

The present study investigates in which way classical psychoanalytic technique positions interpretation. Some of the points of the theory, the practice and, in particular, the technique of Sigmund Freud and Donald W. Winnicott are examined herein. An attempt was deemed necessary to define interpretation - given its complexity and amplitude within the psychoanalytic theory and practice. We also provide some of the reasons which have led to the priority granted to this instrument within the classical psychoanalytic technique. We have also attempted to demonstrate in which way interpretation primarily leads to the Oedipus complex within both the theory and the practice of psychoanalysis. Some of the consequences of it on the process of subjectivation of the individual are also considered herein. We allude to the relevant ideas of Sándor Ferenczi, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, trying to pinpoint in which way their thoughts as well as innovative contributions approximate or drift away from the Freudian and the Winnicottian theories. As far as the psychoanalytic technique is concerned, some new paths also arise from those thoughts.

Abstract:
This study explores the theoretical consequences of Freud's renunciation of the seduction theory. The dissertation defends the thesis that the seduction theory was shaped as much by Freud's adherence to the nomonological model as by the empirical evidence of child sexual abuse. A renunciation of the seduction theory was inevitable, not because the accounts of the daughters were lies, but because the methodology was inappropriate. The nomonological model obscured the emotional structure of the nuclear family in which the structure itself, through which sexuality emerged, directed the girl's entrance into womanhood and caused the woman's dis-ease. Freud's methodology forced him to isolate an event as cause of an illness and to attribute the event to an agent. The universal perversity of the Victorian father thus became the central theme around which an explanation of a female disease was built. When this theme became theoretically untenable, Freud renounced the seduction theory and, still using the nomonological model, built up the construct of the Oedipus complex in which the father was vindicated. In order to exonerate the father, the transactions through which the child's libido developed were represented as originating in inherent tendencies. As a result, the hierarchical nature of the interaction between parent and child was distorted, and this led to the formulation of the distinction between real events and fantasies as a basic premise on which the difference between the pleasure principle and the reality principle rests. This formulation gave rise to the sharp duality between fantasy and reality which eventually compelled him to separate psychic reality and social reality. The theoretical structure built on this duality could not but fuse hysteria, masochism and "normal" femininity into an explanation of the female state, and obscure the essential social relations between men and women which were structured in terms of dominance and submission. The thesis traces the journey from the perverted father as cause of a female disease, hysteria, to the theoretical conjunction of masochism and hysteria. It comes to the conclusion that Freud's model is unable to explain the self-mutilation of the hysteric; nor is it capable of explaining the hysteric's refusal to participate in the circuit of symbolic exchanges which constituted Victorian society. The study further attempts to understand hysteria in terms of the complex interlacing of fact and fantasy and tries to show that fantasy was rooted in the facts of Victorian culture.

Abstract:
Through a close analysis of four plays by Shakespeare, this thesis argues that the question of subjectivity ultimately comes to be negotiated around a structural impasse or certain points of opacity in each of the text's signifying practices. Challenging assumptions about the utatively "theatrical" contexts of Richard III, Richard II, Hamlet and Antony and Cleopatra, I argue that, to varying degrees, the specular economy of each play is in fact traversed by a radical alterity that constitutively gives rise to a notion of subjectivity commonly referred to as "Shakespearean". Elaborating upon the work of both Jacques Lacan and Jacques Derrida, I argue that "subjectivity" in the plays is, rather, the articulated confrontation with a non-dialectizable remainder that haunts each text from within. Crucially in this respect I relate each of the texts to Lacan's account of the "gaze" as a species of what he calls the object a: an alien kernel of jouissance exceeding all subjective mediation yet, paradoxically, also that which confers internal consistency both to subjectivity and to the very process of symbolization as such. I am, moreover, also concerned to read the work of Jacques Derrida as providing an illuminating context for how this incursion of alterity that he terms differance (what Lacan calls the Real) may be read as the unacknowledged support of subjectivity. The thesis concludes with a consideration of how this analysis of the Shakespearean object, rather than succumbing to the heady pleasures of an unfettered textuality, opens, ineluctably, onto a rethinking of the very category of the "political" itself.

Abstract:
The thesis aims to show that, while an interpretive psychology is not compatible with theory as it occurs in the predictive- causal explanation of the natural sciences, it is both possible and necessary to develop a concept of theory valid within an interpretive methodology. These claims are advanced in the course of an examination of Ricoeur 's interpretation of Freudian psychoanalysis. After examining some traditional ways in which phenomenological psychology has responded to the psychoanalytic challenge, the thesis presents an interpretation of Freudian psychoanalysis as a hermeneutic approach which utilized theoretical constructions in a productive way, although distorted by Freud's natural-scientific self- understanding. Freud's causal-explanatory language and natural- scientific meta theory are shown to be significant inasmuch as they provide a vehicle for theory construction in psychoanalysis. However, since the theory is modeled on that of the natural sciences, it proves incompatible with the interpretive aspects of Freud's approach. We then establish a concept of theory and of causal analysis which is different to that of the natural sciences, and is compatible with, and indeed founded in, an interpretive approach to psychology. These concepts are then illustrated in the context of psychoanalysis. In the final chapter the advantages of the use of theory in interpretive psychology are discussed.

This dissertation intends to show that through the way that defines the concepts of subject and object a, Jacques Lacan summarizes what is most radical in the freudian operations of interpretation and construction, presenting an epistemology capable to formalize the operation of interpretation, to point their impasses, its limits, and to justify the need of the construction, also saying what is at stake in this. It points affinities between psychoanalysis and mathematics, and uses it resources, relying on the works of Frege, Badiou, and Russel Dedekin to define subject and object a, identifying the first with zero and identifying the second with both the excess that represent some operations in set theory, and also the irrational number. After, shows the insufficiency of the relationship of simple opposition that uses initially to link all these terms, to overcome it through a quaternary relationship – mutual implication and conjunction-disjunction – which, subverting the usual temporal and spatial references, is best suited for capture the nature of the analytical experience.

Full text
Abstract:
The central aim of this study was to interpret the psychology of C.G . Jung in the light of existential phenomenology, thereby to lay the foundations for an integrated phenomenological analytical psychology. It was recognised that although Jung introduced a poetic understanding of psychological life he tended to adhere theoretically to a Cartesian and natural scientific epistemology and ontology, in which the knower is separated from the known, and psychological life is encapsulated inside the human subject. Thus the main task, which defined generally the study's scope and limitations, was to undercut the lingering Cartesianism in Jung's thought, thereby to recover the world in which one lives as intrinsically and authentically psychological, and one's psychological life as irreducibly world-related. The ontological guidelines for this endeavour were taken primarily from Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty, but it was consistently argued that this hermeneutic movement towards an existential understanding is given within Jung's work itself. Thus: Jung's method is primarily hermeneutic-phenomenological; the psyche is not "mind" or an inner realm more or less linked to the body, but is the embodied life-world, and Jung's descriptions of it - of its autonomy, spatiality and bodiliness, for instance - achieve ontological clarity when it is articulated as Dasein; the self as the totality of the psyche is interpretated in terms of Dasein, and individuation involves differentiation, personalisation and appropriation within existence itself; the complexes, archetypally grounded, are the vital densities of incarnate life, ambiguously conscious and unconscious, known and lived; the archetypes are the fundamental necessities of psychological life, autonomous imaginal structures within which both body and world are founded. Imaginal autonomy is revealed ontically as the metaphorical reality of things, but since imaginal autonomy has no ground thought about psychological life is ultimately poetic. Where relevant, recent theoretical developments in analytical psychology were discussed, particularly the Developmental and Archetypal movements. A clinical study was presented to illustrate some of the main themes of the thesis. In conclusion, the main themes of an integrated phenomenological analytical psychology were outlined, and the central contributions of analytical psychology and existential phenomenology were highlighted.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship between human sexuality and “the mystical” in the work of Jeffrey J. Kripal. I claim that Kripal presents a nondualistic understanding of the relationship between human sexuality and “the mystical” that contests the conventional distinction between body and “soul.” In particular, Kripal’s two central concepts – “the erotic” and “the enlightenment of the body” – suggest that embodiment shapes our understanding of “the mystical.” By demonstrating the psychoanalytic, hermeneutical, and comparative significance of the relationship between human sexuality and “the mystical,” Kripal’s model calls attention to the crucial role that body, gender, and sexual orientation play in both the historical and contemporary study of mysticism. The point of my research is to show that Kripal’s approach signals a new way of studying “the mystical” in terms of “mystical humanism,” which draws on both Eastern and Western philosophies to construct a critical, non-reductive appreciation for the transformative and ultimately emancipatory potential of certain mystical states of consciousness.

Starting from interrogations derived from psychoanalytic practice with children, this thesis was built around three main axes: language, setting and intervention. We have several clinical cases to foster reflection. Acts, gestures, mimicry and postures that make up the polymorphous child\'s language engender the specificity of a setting in which bodies (the analyst\'s and the patient\'s) and toys offer support to transferences. This is a setting mounted on a área of playing. In it, the analyst\'s interventions take care of the maintenance and restoration of the symbolic flow of playing

Abstract:
In what period of the sleep occur the dreams? Introduced in a inaugural way into the Sciences of the Spirit by the scholar and the self-taught Alfred Maury ( 1817-1892 ), the question of the temporality of the dream during the sleep mobilizes for two centuries the attention of the neurologists who have an organiciste approach of the dreamlike phenomenon. So, the famous discovery of the "REM sleep" by the neurosurgeon Michel Jouvet ( 1925-2017 ) joins in this logic which consists in placing the period of the dreams during the sleep resting on a neurobiological support(medium). However, it is true that Sigmund Freud ( 1956-1939 ) seems to have discovered in Maury a precursor - as the other neurologists who study the dreams-, the Freudian position on the duration of the dreams cuts with that of the organicistes: " the dream is the guard of the sleep ", thus he(it) lasts as long as this state of torpor which he(it) maintains. The incompatibility of the neuroscientific and psychoanalytical approaches will give rise to a series of interdisciplinary works on the dreams the purpose of which is to reduce the abyssal ditch(gap) separating both fields of investigations. Mixtures and difficulties of epistemological order which emerge from these attempts to approach can be surmounted(overcome), if we take into account proposals which we make in this research work

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to promote possible connections between two indiciary disciplines, the Pêcheux\'s discourse analysis (DA) and the Lacan-oriented psychoanalysis, departing from the interpretation concept. The works of Pêcheux in DA and Lacan in psychoanalysis bring a distinct position to crucial concepts of this research. It was also used the Authier-Revuz\'s works about discursive heterogeneity, in which DA and psychoanalysis articulate, especially in questions referring to the Other and the production of discourse. Along with the theory, we adopted the analysis of oral fiction narratives with the intention to point the contribution of the interpretation in DA and in psychoanalysis for the advance of the indiciary paradigm and also to return in the analysis from data to theory, in a constant check-up of concepts. It was seen, in the analysis, a junction of central concepts of these two disciplines such as ideology, unconscious, desire and the Other. There are points where the DA advances and the psychoanalysis stops. The DA leaves aside the unconscious mind and concentrates in the social part of the subject and what he says, however it is known that the question of the unconscious mind is only left aside, but is always present in the Pêcheux\'s works (as on the two forgetting incidents). The psychoanalysis on the other hand leaves aside what is external to the discourse, not contemplating the part exerted by the ideology on the subject, for example. Such statements point to a harmony between the interpretation in DA and in psychoanalysis, having as final product the psychoanalytical-discursive analyst. This new analyst uses points of approach between DA and psychoanalysis positioning himself in front of a discourse that is marked by the slips of the subject of the unconscious and of the subject of the ideology. Therefore, there\'s no birth of a new theory, but a new theoretical position that aims to give to the data in Human Sciences and, particularly to the studies about the discourse, \"a more complete\" way of approaching the questions linked to the subject\'s desire and his position in the society where he lives. A \"more complete\" way that is without a doubt incomplete, as incomplete as the subjects and the discourses we analyze.

Abstract:
This thesis elicits theoretical / methodological foundations for the hermeneuticity of the psychoanalytical process. Substantiation of psychoanalysis as a specific form of hermeneutical practice is based on the analysis of psychoanalytical signs which form the "psychoanalytical text", are responsible for sense-formation in the sphere of the unconscious, interpretation and understanding procedures as well as on applying hermeneutical logic in psychoanalysis. A combination of the classic gnoseology with the gnoseology of humanitarian knowledge is presented as the main gnoseological feature of psychoanalysis. It is established that in its practical and technological arsenal psychoanalysis is a hermeneutics of a particular discipline and at the level of the philosophic generalization of the conscious, the unconscious, as well as of communication, interpretation and logic, psychoanalysis has characteristics of a particular philosophical hermeneutics with ontological, gnoseological, and phenomenological levels of analysis. This thesis also presents philosophical / hermeneutical reflection upon the problems of understanding and interpretation in psychoanalysis. Psychoanalytical understanding represents psychoanalysis as a hermeneutic praxis with its specific hermeneutic logic that organizes psychoanalytical knowledge, forms the mechanisms of searching for sense and the scheme of interpretation activities. Psychoanalytical hermeneutics is set out among other hermeneutics with a specification of its semiotic, linguistic and logical hermeneutic features

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis I examine the portrayal of masculinity in selected works of Damon Galgut. Masculinities are read through the lens of the double and the uncanny as conceived by Freud and other scholars. The selected novels include The Beautiful Screaming of Pigs (1991), The Quarry (1995), The Good Doctor (2004), The Impostor (2008) and In a Strange Room (2010). In the introduction theoretical issues relating to masculinities, the double and the uncanny are discussed and a broad framework for the thesis is outlined. Subsequently each chapter discusses the representation of men and masculinities in the selected novels. Issues such as masculinity in the military, friendship amongst men, relationships with women, masculinity and apartheid, masculinity and whiteness and heterosexuality and homosexuality are discussed and explored through the lens of the double and the uncanny. Questions that emerge from this study are: What perspectives does Galgut offer of masculinities before and after apartheid? How do the men experience their political and social environment? How do the male characters in the novels interact with the female characters? What obligations do men and women have towards each other?:
Die geselekteerde romans sluit in The Beautiful Screaming of Pigs (1991), The Quarry (1995), The Good Doctor (2004), The Impostor (2008) en In a Strange Room (2010).

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Jacques Lacan and Sigmund Freud‟s ideas are presented with specific emphasis on the themes presented in Freud‟s (1920a) Beyond the Pleasure Principle. Freud‟s Project for a Scientific Psychology (1950) provides important clues to describe the pleasure principle in terms of Quantity (Q), facilitations [Bahnung] and contact-barriers. Therefore, the implications of the pleasure principle relate greatly to 1) Freud‟s notion of the unconscious, 2) Lacan‟s explanation of das Ding, 3) the difference between jouissance and plaisir, and 4) the relationship between das Ding and the Law. Lacan‟s understanding of the death drive is consequently the culmination of all the topics mentioned and repeated throughout. Lacan‟s description of the death drive is twofold: firstly, the mechanical explanation of the pleasure principle, and secondly, how desire features within the pleasure principle. Lacan‟s description of the death drive encompasses libido, desire, economy, Linguistics, and the Oedipus complex, which illustrates why Freud‟s (1920) Beyond the Pleasure Principle is not only an important text in Freud‟s oeuvre, but also in Lacan‟s.

Teng, James Wei Jie. "An interpretative phenomenological analysis of the experiences of HIV-positive lay counsellors working in the voluntary counselling and testing settings." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002579.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to present and understand the experiences of HIV-positive lay counsellors working in Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) settings. Specifically exploring and understanding the utilisation of personal experiences within counselling encounters, the practice of peer counselling within VCT, and the challenges experienced by HIV-positive lay counsellors within VCT settings. This study, employing a qualitative interpretative phenomenological methodology required a small sample of practicing HIV-positive lay counsellors, who were selected and interviewed on their experiences utilising semi-structured interviewing. Data was analysed for meaning units, which were interpreted inductively and hermeneutically, and categorised into super-ordinate themes. Three superordinate themes within the participants’ experiences of providing VCT services were determined, namely: ‘diagnosis and disclosure experiences’, ‘peer counselling’, and ‘challenges’. This research found that the experiences of providing peer counselling depended upon identification with their client’s negative appraisal of their diagnosis experiences. Whether through empathic connections generated through the shared experience of discovering a seropositive status, or through countertransferential reactions induced through their client’s yearning for care and support. This required the counsellor to selfdisclose within counselling encounters in order to provide personal experiences of living with HIV/AIDS. Successful implementation of peer counselling provided recently diagnosed individuals with knowledge surrounding HIV/AIDS, coping skills to manage the daily physiological and psychological challenges, facilitation and adherence to treatment, social assistance, ongoing relationships, inspiring hope, and the creation of positive appraisals. However the informal utilisation of task-shifting within lay healthcare cadres, and the lack of governmental recognition for the emotional labour provided within VCT indicated that HIVpositive lay counsellors require ongoing training, support and remuneration to limit potential occupational stress, resignation, and burnout.

The essay investigates the concept of Winnicottian interpretation, taking as the starting point the paradigm change carried out by D. W. Winnicott in psychoanalysis. It was found that the change in the central problem of the psychoanalysis performed by Winnicott (the replacement of Oedipus problems for problems of the baby on the mother s lap) and the introduction of a new guiding theory (the theory of maturation instead of the theory of sexuality) ended up demanding changes in the internal structure of psychoanalytical theory. As a consequence, the transformation of the analytical work and interpretation occurred. According to that perspective, we studied the main aspects of Winnicottian psychoanalysis interpretation and its role in the solution of disorders, untreated by the traditional theory. Such modification is widespread to the extent of amplifying the meaning of the psychoanalytical interpretation

Dowrick, Stephanie B. "Rainer Maria Rilke : bearing witness." Thesis, View partial thesis, restricted access, 2008. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/44105.

Abstract:
This study of the poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) explores both epistemological and ontological themes, explicitly asking what readers may “bear witness to” within themselves, as well as on the page, through their reading. The primary question of the study comes from Martin Heidegger’s essay on Rilke when (quoting Hölderlin) he asks: “What are poets for (in these destitute times)?” and whether this has genuine significance beyond entertainment or diversion. The spiritual complexity of Rilke’s work has been of some interest to many scholars. In this study I centralise that interest at book-length for the first time since Frederico Olivero’s 1931 study of mysticism in Rilke’s work. Also for the first time I privilege the perspective of the contemporary general reader, looking at the spiritual variances and ambiguities within Rilke’s work and why they may have a particular resonance for twenty-first century readers. This allows for a more diffused discussion about reading as well as writing, with attention to the acquisition of knowledge and the forces of imagination and inspiration as well as subjectivity. The study looks closely at Rilke’s poetry, from the popular Book of Hours to the more challenging Duino Elegies and Sonnets to Orpheus, as well as the varied translations into English, using that variety to intensify insights about the inevitable subjectivity of readers as well as translators. I discuss Rilke’s psychologically and socially complex life, revealed in part through his legacy of more than 10,000 letters. How readers “read” the life of a writer self-evidently colours their reading of the work. I propose that this simultaneously allows for an enhanced “reading” of and greater understanding of their own spiritual or existential needs and individual subjectivity. The study calls on the work of a number of critics outside the field of literary studies. These include the psychoanalytic writers Alice Miller and James Hillman and the philosophers Hans-Georg Gadamer, Iris Murdoch, Gaston Bachelard, John Armstrong, George Steiner, Gabriel Marcel, Rudolf Otto and Martin Heidegger. The study speaks both explicitly and implicitly for John Keats’s idea of “negative capability” and the specific demands of bringing to the reading of Rilke, and the writing about him, the receptiveness and concentration of a “poet’s” mind where, as Rilke himself urged, questions can matter more than answers and the need for absolutism can be postponed.

Becker, Katrin. "Viva vox iuris, oder die juridische Stimme der Literatur : Kafkas Der Proceß und Hoffmanns Der Sandmann im Spiegel der dogmatischen Anthropologie Pierre Legendres." Thesis, Paris 4, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA040123.

Full text
Abstract:
The doctoral dissertation “Viva vox iuris” is aimed at extending the research on law and literature by developping a new perspective, based on Pierre Legendre’s “dogmatic anthropology”. Starting with an overview of the current state of research in this field, and based on a detailed presentation of Legendre’s theory, the dissertation develops the hypothesis that the deep entanglement of law and literature confers upon literature the capacity of either reinforcing the effectivity of cultural normativity, or of influencing it in the sense of a modificatory force. The plausibility of this hypothesis is then assessed by a thorough analysis of Kafka’s The Trial and Hoffmann’s The Sandman. The Trial is presented as being a novel that stages the failure of interpretation on the diegetic, hermeneutic as well as the production level, i.e. with regard to the author (– interpretation being, from Legendre’s perspective, the fundamental cultural technique assuring a non-delusional human existence). Being confronted with this failure and the consequent lack of a regime of sense, the reader gains insight, ex negativo, into the necessity of being inscribed, by way of interpretation, into an order of Reference that needs to be mediated by literature and law. With regard to The Sandman, the dissertation undertakes to show, through a combination of the concept of testimony with the dogmatic-anthropological core concepts of alterity and representation, how the fantastical blurring of the limits between reality and fiction, as staged in the novel, provides insights into the contingency of the fundamental structure of the normative order of cultural and subjective identity

Abstract:
The research presented here concerns the analysis of the poetic writing of three contemporary Italian women writers: Antonella Anedda (1955), Patrizia Cavalli (1947) and Mariangela Gualtieri (1951). We decided to approach this corpus on the basis of certain theories of Lacanian psychoanalysis. The starting hypothesis rests on the idea that poetic text, because of its particular status within language, needs to be examined on the basis of scrupulous reflection on the relation between the unconscious and language. We have developed a notion of poetic text that is based on two major approaches by Jacques Lacan, namely the unconscious as the space of the subject manque-à-être and the unconscious parlêtre. From this point on, we have defined the text as the place of coexistence of two distinct universes: that of the Symbolic, which refers to the incessant sliding of the subject on the chain of signifiers, and that of the Real, which is singular, opaque and indecipherable lalangue, which inhabits every speaking being. It has therefore proved necessary to question the issues of enunciation and interpretation in depth. The Lacanian concept of pas-tout, closely linked to the feminine question, has guided us in the formulation of an ethic of reading the text that aims not to neglect its real, corporeal and irreducible dimension. We then tested our approach through the analysis of the chosen poetic corpus. Examining the specific mode of enunciation of each of the three poets referred to has allowed us to give a voice to three major exemples of contemporary Italian poetry. The writings of Anedda, Cavalli and Gualtieri have thus established themselves not only as three completely original experiments in the panorama of Italian poetry of recent years, but above all as three complex and different answers in relation to the issues of contemporary subjectivity

The object of this work is the circulation and appropriation of psychoanalysis in psychiatry in Rio de Janeiro in the early twentieth century. The main goal will be to investigate how psychoanalytic theory was welcomed by psychiatrists in a broad context for discussion of projects for the Brazilian nation. To demarcate the group of psychiatrists-psychoanalysts in Rio de Janeiro in clipping concerned we appropriated the concept of generation proposed by the sociologist Karl Mannheim (1928). Through the proposed methodology reception theory / theory of action and discussions on relations between reception and circulation of scientific theories, we work with the idea that there are no false or correct interpretations when it comes to receiving texts, but the interpretation of each reader's about a particular work starts from the social, historical influences and personal experiences. In this sense, adopting as chronological cut the years 1926-1944, we seek to show how psychiatric medical discourses that were grounded in psychoanalytic assumptions were trying to account for detecting and educate the Brazilian primitivism (the national „id‟), in order to adjust their values and behaviors to the ideals of the modern civilized world. The function of psychoanalytic theory in this project would be to support the speeches that recommend education or evolution of the Brazilian‟s “primitive id” (on the passions, the impulses, the excesses, the deviant behavior) so that it would become a “civilized ego”, to finally meet the national identity.

The aim of this thesis was to research the contributions of Faust by Goethe to the Psychoanalysis. For that we left from the hypotesis of which the repetition is a psychoanalytic concept marking the end of analysis. To comprove that, after a brief incursion by Goethe’s biography and the location of the book in the german’s literature history, it was necessary to get deep into our comprehension on the entry of the subject in the language, on the lack from there and differentiate of the lack relative to the castration. Next we lean over on the wish perspective from Aristotle in De Anima and Nicomachean Ethics from there to understand the construction of this concept in the Psychoanalysis. Beginnig with the text Project for a scientific psychology by Freud we follow up to arriving in Lacan and his comprehension of das Ding. That said, it was possible to base the structure of the subject of langage while lacking and to understand the paradox exposed in the pact between Faust and Mephistopheles. The phantasy was the next point to be study. Therefore, we came back to the firsts Freud’s clinical reports and we follow the construction of this notion. We returned to the concept of unheimlich to understand the anguish that wraps the bascule inherent to the fantasmatic veil. We follow with Lacan in his seminar about anguish untill his seminar about the logic of phantasy. Than, we analysed two moments of Goethe’s text – the relationship of Faust with Gretchen and, in a second moment, his relationship with Helen. We realized how in the litterary text the bias through wich the phantasy can be seen leaves space to the real appears. From the advent of the real in the relationship with Helena comes up to Faust the possibility of a new know-how different from what had been done so far. This contingency opens the possibility to think the repetition as the advento f the new, as Lacan works since 1964. With that in our horizon, we follow the constrution of this concept from Freud in two moments: in 1914 and in 1920. Next, we turno to the lacanian text and divide then in two parts: before and after 1964. We realized then that the written texts or seminars given up to 1964 were directed to the freudian notion of compulsion to repetition. Even so, it is possible to observe in this period some seeds of his future position. The considerations explained here led us to consider the end of faust as the relaization of repetition as a contingency, a bon heur to wich teh subject under analysis can choose by the of his course
