Abstract:
In response to a survey, 285 psychoanalysts reported having analyzed 1215 homosexual patients, resulting in 23 percent changing to heterosexuality and 84 percent receiving significant therapeutic benefit. Various statistics and individual comments are reported. Virtually all of the respondents rejected the idea that a homosexual patient in analysis “can and should” change to heterosexuality, although 17 percent had changed their opinion during the last 10 years. Over a third believed that most other psychoanalysts hold this opinion even though they themselves do not. The contention of some gay activists that “traditionally trained” psychoanalysts harm and “abuse” their patients is examined and rejected.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the relationship between psychoanalysis, cultural studies and culturology. More attention is paid to the analysis of the conceptual and methodological contribution of psychoanalytic theory to cultural studies. The author emphasizes the nature of the reception of psychoanalytic theories in Western science, demonstrating that the invasion of psychoanalysis into the field of cultural studies, as well as the dynamics of their mutual influence was conditioned by the general ideological attitudes of «suspicion» towards the institutions of power. Psychoanalysis brings its methodological usefulness to cultural studies in that it can be used to reveal the conditions of creation and consumption of cultural products, the discovery of the subject’s representation strategies, and the degree of the researcher’s engagement. The conclusion is made that a productive dialogue between practicing psychoanalysts, researchers in the theory of psychoanalysis, as well as scholars involved in the theory and history of culture is necessary for the integration of modern psychoanalytic theory into domestic culturology.

Abstract:
BackgroundEarly psychodynamic writing on same-gender sexual preference contributed to its pathologisation and an interest in treatment directed at changing sexual orientation.AimsTo establish the therapeutic approaches taken by contemporary psychotherapists and psychoanalysts to gay and lesbian clients/patients.MethodA random sample of individuals listed as working with adults in the British Confederation of Psychotherapists' register were sent postal questionnaires.ResultsData are available from 274 (69%) of 395 questionnaires. Only one of 218 respondents said that he/she was homosexual. One-third said that gay and lesbian patients did have a right to a gay or lesbian therapist. A total of 179 (82% of 218) respondents described work with gay and lesbian clients/patients, and in the majority of cases sexual orientation was an important aspect of the work.ConclusionsGays and lesbians seeking psychoanalysis or psychotherapy in the National Health Service or outside it for personal and/or training purposes will be unlikely to find a gay or lesbian therapist if they want one. The British Confederation of Psychotherapists' practitioners take on gay and lesbian clients/patients, although many do not see these social identities as relevant to the therapeutic process. Evidence from this study indicates that such clients/patients may encounter overt or covert bias, including the pathologisation of homosexuality per se.

Abstract:
The history of psychoanalysis in Brazil during the civilian–military dictatorship (1964–85) has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years as an instance of institutional complicity with authoritarian rule. The case of Amílcar Lobo in Rio de Janeiro is now well known. However, there is less documentation of events in São Paulo, leading to a misrepresentation of the Brazilian Psychoanalytical Society of São Paulo as having passed relatively unscathed through the dictatorial period. This paper confronts this misrepresentation by documenting the case of a psychoanalyst from São Paulo who was involved with the torture regime. A detailed account is presented of claims made to the authors about the actions of this psychoanalyst in relation to a political prisoner of the period, and some parallels are made with material in two published works by him. It is suggested that this particular psychoanalyst's behaviour reflects attitudes prevalent in the Brazilian Psychoanalytical Society of São Paulo at the time, including its support for the view that political resistance was a sign of psychological ‘immaturity’ or pathology.

Abstract:
Abstract This article sheds light on the group consciousness and relational gender identity of the female, Jewish, Iranian-American protagonist of Farībā Ṣidīqīm’s novel, Liora. I build my argument on the work of feminist psychoanalysts, who postulate that—while the process of boys’ individuation entails a fixing of boundaries between the self and the others—girls retain their primary tie and fusion with their mothers. Characterized by what Adrienne Rich and Lynn Sukenick call “matrophobia,” i.e., the fear of becoming like one’s mother, Liora’s relationship with her mother is extremely complicated. From an early age—beginning with the death of her grandmother—Liora feels the need to mother her mother. Notwithstanding her strong fear of becoming like her, she becomes her replica, with the same obsessions, preoccupations, and attitudes toward life. Although at the beginning of the novel, she sets out to tell her own life story, her narrative soon becomes intertwined with the stories of not only her mother, but also other women from the Jewish community within which she grew up. Liora is liberated only at the end of the novel when she realizes that, instead of blaming her mother, she should reject the patriarchal structures of domination that maintain women’s oppression.

Abstract:
The article reveals the key ideas of psychoanalysts of the «independent» group of the British Psychoanalytic Association. To date, the framework of the modern anthropological system consists of psychoanalytic theories of personality development. In addition to the orthodox (classical) psychoanalysis of S. Freud, individual psychology of A. Adler and analytical psychology of Jung, an important place in the system of psychoanalytic directions is occupied by the theory of object relations - psychoanalytic current, which is based on the idea that as much the satisfaction of internal urges, as Freud argued, as the successful search and establishment of relationships with others. However, in addition to the work of M. Klein and the followers of her scientific and practical school, the creative work of other representatives of British psychoanalysis remains little studied for Ukrainian science. On the basis of the theoretical analysis of literary sources the main principles of psychoanalytic pedagogy within the theory of object relations are revealed. The main features of the theory of object relations, around which the representatives of the «independent» group gathered, have been identified. Emphasis is placed on the common and different views of British psychoanalysts on the formation of the child's personality, as well as criticism of the ideas of classical psychoanalysis. In particular, it is proved that the representatives of the «independent» group departed from the classical Freudian idea of the dominant influence of the Oedipus complex and the rigid «Super Ego» on the formation of personality. It is proved that the representatives of the «independent» group adhered to three common ideas: 1) each person from birth seeks to object relations, rather than to meet needs; 2) the interaction of the newborn with the outside world, especially in the dyad with the mother, has a decisive influence on the evolution of his inner world, which is considered through the prism of introjected inner objects; 3) a person's attitude to external objects is determined by imaginary internal object relations, which were formed in the child's psyche at an early age. It was concluded that the activities of analysts of the «independent» group focused on the problems of interpersonal communication, the child's interaction with parents at an early age, as well as the problems of identification and self-perception. Prospects for further research are planned in revealing the peculiarities of the work of Balint’s groups and the organization of scientific and practical measures for the prevention of pedagogical burnout.

Abstract:
Freud has a dual attitude to the biographical genre. When he places himself in the position of psychoanalyst/biographer of others, he enthusiastically speaks of lands to be conquered for psychoanalysis. His works, as well as his correspondence, show that he continued to devote himself to investigations which resulted in interpretations of a number of personalities, the most detailed of which regarded Leonardo da Vinci, Goethe, Dostoyevsky, President Wilson and Moses. On the other hand, even though during the first years of the discovery of psychoanalysis he allowed himself, in a more or less veiled manner, confidences of an autobiographical nature, Freud remained very secretive about himself. He limited himself to making public only the routine information found on his university curriculum vitae or the details of his life directly related to the discovery and development of psychoanalysis. Hidden behind die Sache, the Cause, the man always vigorously defended himself against those who, braving the repeated destruction to which he subjected his archives, claimed to apply to him this ‘investigative drive’ the heuristic richness of which he otherwise celebrated. It is by means of fantasies of identification to the work, which are present in every biographical effort, that we here attempt to address the contradictions of this dual attitude.

Abstract:
For the first time, this program of research has utilised an innovative methodology, combining phenomenology and psychoanalysis, to explore the lived experiences and psychological meanings of three groups of people – nuclear scientists, people with anti-nuclear views, and victims of the Fukushima disaster. Findings revealed some fundamental experiences of nuclear energy and technology including: hiddenness; spatial and temporal horizons transcending human life; annihilation terror; and the significance of human trust. The findings extend our understanding of the human dimension of nuclear energy and technology, and pave the way for further psychological and philosophical interrogation.

Abstract:
This study was designed to examine psychology graduate students' attitudes toward gay men and lesbian women. It was hypothesized that the following variables would predict participants' attitudes toward gay men and lesbian women: participant gender, amount of client contact with gay men and lesbian women, and gender role attitudes. Additionally, a measure of social desirability was included to investigate the validity of responses. Data were analyzed by conducting an independent t-test, a correlated t-test, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results indicated that gay men were viewed more negatively than were lesbian women. As expected, participants' gender role attitudes significantly predicted their attitudes toward gay men and lesbian women. Contrary to predicted outcomes, results indicated that neither participant gender nor client contact predicted attitudes toward homosexuality. Finally, results suggested that participants were not engaging in socially desirable responding. Implications of this study for research, theory, and practice are discussed.

The disobedience of traffic rules is a public health problem. There is an absence of understanding driving behavior from Zizekian psychoanalysis. The general scope of this research is based on the interdisciplinary approach in a Transformative Social Marketing. The theoretical implication presents a new view of human behavior inspired from Zizekian psychoanalysis (based on "conscious/unconscious" in a continuous process, Real-Symbolic-Imaginary Triad, Reflexivity, Interpassivity, authentic act). Three groups (Pleasing, Care, Refuge) emerge from the Real-Symbolic-Imaginary Triad that orients behaviors to obey or disobey traffic rules. The methodological implication is the "psychoanalytic map" as a new methodological tool for more understanding the complexity of driving behavior. The practical implication is an authentic act, emerged from the driver, to choose a personalized message which changes after a period using VANet technology

Vasilj, Igor. "EVALUATING THE ATTITUDES AND PRACTICES OF EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION AMONG PSYCHOTHERAPISTS." UKnowledge, 2018. https://uknowledge.uky.edu/edp_etds/66.

Abstract:
Exercise has been shown to improve mood, anxiety, stress, and promote neuroplasticity (Conn, 2010; Donaghy, 2007; Josefsson, Lindwall, & Archer, 2014; Silveria et al., 2013; Stathopoulou et al., 2006). However, limited research on the topic suggests that many psychologists and mental health providers are not incorporating exercise into psychological treatment, and many lack the confidence to do so (Burton, Pakenham, & Brown, 2010; Weir, 2011). The purpose of this study was to evaluate current exercise prescription trends among practicing psychologists and trainees, including identifying their current beliefs, attitudes, training, and the perceived barriers hindering psychotherapists from recommending and prescribing exercise. Psychologists and trainees (N = 146), completed the Exercise in Mental Illness Questionnaire – Health Practitioner Version (EMIQ-HP). Results revealed: a) 40.4% (n = 59) of psychotherapists prescribed exercise only occasionally and recommended clients exercise “most days of the week,” at moderate intensity; b) older psychotherapists’ (t[163] = -2.15, p = .038) and trainees further along in training (t[163] = 2.26, p = .029)were both more likely to prescribe exercise (F[9, 36] = 9.27, p = .011, R2= .42); c) exercise habits of respondents were not significant predictors of exercise prescription; d) a small number of respondents (22.6%; n = 33) reported previous formal training in exercise prescription; and formal training (β = .39, p < .001) was positively correlated with exercise prescription [F(1, 144) = 26.99, p < .001, R2= .16]; and e) therapist barriers (β = -.39, p < .001; e.g., “Prescribing exercise to people with a mental illness is not part of my job…I do not know how to prescribe exercise to people with a mental illness…I don’t believe exercise will help people with a mental illness,” etc.) were inversely related with exercise prescription, F[2, 145] = 27.03, p < .001; R2= .27. In conclusion, psychotherapists’ age, year in graduate school (for trainees; n = 55), and formal training in exercise prescription were significant predictors of exercise prescription, while higher perceived therapist barriers to exercise prescription hinder prescription practices. Study findings, limitations, and future research directions are discussed.

Abstract:
The research and the investigative clinic, in the context of early psychosis, raise questions concerning the interfaces of Medicine and Psychology. The change in a nosography worried with classification and diagnosis, as traditionally shown by specialized compendiums, becomes essential, in order to include a temporal dimension of psychopathological processes, bringing an unavoidable redefinition of the functions of both the physician and the psychologist. This dissertation presents the work of Nielle Puig-Vergès and her method of comparative clinic epistemology in the therapeutic and diagnostic activities concerning autistic and psychotic children, together with their families. The author has as main theoretical references the philosophical tradition of Husserl \'s phenomenology and the psychoanalytical path defined by Freud, Ferenczi and Bion. In this dissertation, it will be discussed the deep theoretical and methodological changes needed_to put into effect the change from a model of attendance based on the preoccupation with classifying diseases to a model in which the professionals engaged should be able of, in the limit, creating a specific therapeutic language with each one of their patients. The work of Puig-Vergès gives the framework for the constitution and organization of multidisciplinary teams in the context of this new focus on the health, and not on the disease.

Abstract:
This production, based on the psychoanalytical work, studies the HIV/AIDS phenomenon, from the speech of four AIDS patients, who have been interviewed for three years. The psychoanalytical reference functioned as a methodological and theoretical tool in order to run the interviews, as well as for the reading of the material produced along the meetings with the subjects of the research. The conceptions of the Multiple Fields Theory and the extense clinic by the Brazilian Psychoanalyst Fabio Herrmann have been of great importance, which support the usage of the psychoanalytical method, outside the classical setting, including academic research. This piece of work gets from the assumption of which the pathologies, mainly the chronicle and incurable ones, induce a narcissistic injury over their victims. When it comes to AIDS, this situation would become aggravated by the vulnerability that the disease provokes, by the adverse effects of the medicines and by the social stigmas which are linked to them. The aim of the research was verifying what psychic strategies the patients use in order to face such situation and to try to fix this wound. It was proved that the AIDS patients feel themselves thrown into a field of “angst” [das Ängstlichen] when they realize they are submerged by this disease. The ego reaction to deal the distressing field would provoke an ego splitting (Spaultung), occurring that the frightening reality is able to psychically coexist with the desire of repairing the narcissistic wound and with the indelible mourning by itself. In that case, AIDS is shared in the psychic dynamic of the patient in terms of what that Freud named as das Unheimliche. The ego, thanks to its synthesis power, even though it is grown weak by an outside and merciless force, may be able to face it and keep integrated, although the irreparable losses.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Winnicott’s preface to Renata Gaddini’s Italian translation of his book The Family and Individual Development, in which he recognises that translation from English culture to Italian culture presents difficulties. Winnicott admits that it cannot be used as a textbook for doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists or any other profession, because it contains the ideas of psychoanalysis, a discipline which involves a new area of understanding and which crosses between several professions. He elaborates on this and on the inevitable hostility towards psychoanalysis, and he challenges the mainstream professions in their attitudes towards it.

Abstract:
Over the past 30 years, there has been a revolution in psychotherapy under the influence of evidence-based methodology. The methods of evidence-based psychotherapy have gained preference all over the world. The rapidity of implementation of research results into practice is predetermined by the phenomenon of scientific influence. To determine this phenomenon, the author proposes to use the RSCI (Russian Science Citation Index) core percentile. The rating of the scientific influence of St. Petersburg psychotherapists was compiled for the first time ever. In total, the rating includes 31 specialists (with the 133 RSCI core percentile from 4 to 51) representing 12 organizations, ranked in accordance with the average RSCI core percentile as follows: 1) Scientific Medical Research Center for Psychiatry and Neurology named after V. M. Bekhterev — 16.1; 2) St. Petersburg School of Psychotherapy and Psychology of attitudes — 17.7; 3) St. Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University — 31.0; 4) North-Western State Medical University named after I. I. Mechnikov — 39.5. It is important to note that the rating includes non-governmental organizations, which, unlike state-run ones, do not have access to direct state funding for scientific research. Methods of psychotherapy are presented in the rating as follows: psychoanalysis — 8.7; positive dynamic psychotherapy — 17.7; cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy — 31.3, and personality-oriented (person-centered) psychotherapy — 31.6. The results obtained can be taken into account by the heads of commercial structures, health care and educational institutions when drawing up long-term plans, as well as by doctors and psychologists when choosing educational programs for professional retraining in the field of psychotherapy.
