Full textThis thesis analyzes the effects of a psychiatric reform on everyday practices of the technicians and nursing auxiliaries work, coming from consideration of work as a possible space of feelings production and the reform, which means a permanent construction of knowing, by practicing, at the same time it leads, inserting ,in this praxis, a dialectics. This study helps to create listening groups about the work of this category, achieving recognition and rescue of its speaking, making exchanges, facing a feeling of discomfort at work, creating possibilities of subjectivation. Referring to the nursing formation and the impasses of the profession, this thesis visualizes the necessity of changes in this theoretical-technical field, proving that the technicians and the auxiliaries do not have any space for their knowing, built in practice (and it can only be this way),and that this category is considered invisible, in most of discussions, about the reform, being fundamental when it happens.

Full textAbstract The aim of this quality improvement (QI) project was to explore whether the implementation of an enhanced telephone reminder system improved the rate of attendance at initial follow-up appointment and medication adherence. A total of 86 patients, discharged from inpatient psychiatric units with a follow-up within 7 days of discharge, were eligible to receive the enhanced telephone contact reminder and follow-up text. A preliminary retrospective chart review was conducted to collect historical data on medication and attendance adherence. A prospective interventional design was used to implement the QI project. Patients received telephone contact within 24-72 hours of discharge and text message reminder strategies. A medication adherence assessment was completed at telephone contact and at initial follow-up appointment. An analysis of the data examined the impact of the TCM strategy on patient?s rate of adherence to medication and initial follow-up appointments. Descriptive analysis assessed the frequency of medication adherence in retrospective and implementation data. Inferential statistics analyzed factors of association such as prior clinic services and rate of attendance at follow-up appointment. In the retrospective chart review (n=57), data revealed a 28% attendance rate and an 81% medication adherence at the follow-up appointment, with no statistical difference in a 145 history of prior series on attendance. Implementation data on medication adherence at telephone contact and at first follow-up appointment revealed a 61.5% medication adherence rate at telephone contact and 80% adherence rate at first follow-up appointment. The predictor value of a prior history of service on attendance at first follow-up appointment revealed no statistically significant difference. The project, however, resulted in clinically significant benefits that promoted individual patients? medication-taking behaviors and decisions to attend follow-up appointments, and improved clinical practices at the BHC.

Full textAlthough the results of many Brazilians qualitative studies on the learning process in mental health have added knowledge, others are needed using less subjective methods of study and less subject to bias implicit in the academic process. This study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the instrument \"Nursing Students\' Attitudes Toward Mental Health Nursing and Consumers\" for use among undergraduate nursing students in Brazil. This is a methodological study of a subjective construct measuring instrument, originally from Australia, which was culturally adapted to the Brazilian context for evaluating its properties through the standardized methodology of cultural adaptation of psychometric instruments, Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis, by the Statistical Package for The Social Sciences (SPSS) v.21 and AMOS / SPSS, v.22, respectively. The original instrument and Authoritarianism and Minority View fields of the instrument OMI, already validated for the Brazilian reality was applied. Data collection was performed in 5 undergraduate courses in Nursing at public higher education institutions located within and São Paulo and Parana States, from the years 2013 and 2014, totaling 365 subjects. The subjects were divided into 91.3% of females and 8.7% males and their ages ranged from 18 to 58 years, with a mean (M) 21.9 years and a standard deviation ( sd) of 3.88 years, the theoretical component of classes ranged 36-71 hours / class, M = 52 hours; SD = 13.64 and the clinical practice, ranged 76-100 hours / class, M = 91 and SD = 5.22. The initial application time interval and end of the instrument varied depending on the schedule and hours of classes of each higher education institution, ranging between 29 and 136 days, M = 77.63, SD = 39.64. Exploratory factor analysis resulted in a pre-final version of 23 items, with a Cronbach alpha coefficient of between 0.71 to 0.95. While performing the exploratory factor analysis, twelve items were removed due to low commonality and / or internal consistency. This version was not considered valid for convergent validation method and due to major changes in its structure, could not be considered a validated version of the original instrument. This pre-final version was submitted to structural equation modeling, resulting in the presentation of a theoretical model composed of 22 items distributed in five areas, with two areas remained identical to the original one has been modified and two new ones were added, having been validated by the statistical method used and with acceptable reliability (Cronbach\'s alpha 0.72 to 0.95). Although the original instrument has not been validated in Brazil, it is believed that this study contributed to the research and Mental Health Nursing teaching, to present an assessment instrument of mental health learning based on the original instrument, as well as to present an explanatory theoretical model for the process of learning and the student\'s attitude in the mental health area

Gimba, Solomon Musa. "Barriers to provision of psychiatric nursing care : a case study of a teaching hospital, Nigeria." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/13137.
Full textBarriers to the provision of psychiatric nursing care have been reported worldwide, although literature on these barriers in Nigeria is limited. The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the barriers to provision of psychiatric nursing care, using the case study methodology. A sample of 12 participants was recruited for the study, comprising four key informants and eight study participants. The data collection methods included grand tour interviews with the key informants, in-depth interviews with key informants and other study participants and participant observation of all 12 participants. Content analysis was conducted. It yielded five themes related to barriers, namely: personal barriers to provision of psychiatric nursing care, relationship related barriers to provision of psychiatric nursing care, environmental barriers to provision of psychiatric nursing care, organisational barriers to provision of psychiatric nursing care and “public” related barriers to provision of psychiatric nursing care. The sixth theme: Motivators to provision of psychiatric nursing care despite barriers was discovered serendipitously. These findings are in line with previous findings of studies carried out in other settings. The study findings raise the need for management to value the psychiatric nurses, refrain from the use of derogatory statements and passing comments and place high value on the educational and career progression of the psychiatric nurses and the design of a therapeutic environment.

Full textIn Sweden, 20- 40 percent of people live with a mental illness. The treatment of mental illness is based on a humanistic approach, focusing on health promotion by supporting and strengthening the individual through supportive conversations. Purpose; The purpose of this study was to describe nurses' experiences of supportive conversations in their work with psychiatric outpatients. Method; A qualitative study was conducted, in which data were collected using semi-structured interviews with nurses in outpatient psychiatric care. Data were analyzed by conventional content analysis. The study included a total of 12 nurses. Results; Supporting conversations was described by nurses as an important and fundamental part of the relationship between nurse and patient in psychiatric outpatients. Experience and availability were described as significant factors for supporting conversations. Conclusion; Nurses experienced that content for supporting conversations and aims were indistinct. Indistinct guidelines for supportive conversations may lead to nurses becoming stressed. Routine and structure are important factors that may result in nurses working better under pressure and feeling more confident in supporting conversations.
