Full textDiagnosing at a very early stage the decline in the traditional symbolic order, Lacan developed in the 1970s the conceptual tools that would be appropriate for grasping the modern deregulation of different forms of enjoyment and the new normative regimes that seek to keep them in check. Psychoanalysis’s contribution to the philosophical enquiry into norms hinges on how such experience lies radically beyond norms, allowing for a theorization not only of the processes of normalization by the Other, but also of subjective and subversive normalcy. This study demonstrates the specific irreducibility of psychoanalysis, where Foucauldian genealogies constantly downscale it to other discourses (medical, psychiatric, familial, legal, spiritual). We show: i. that Lacan’s structural theses of the 1950s promoting the Law of the Nameof-the-Father as a founding Norm, take aim at the normalizing drift of Ego Psychology; ii. that psychoanalysis targets, beyond the norms of life and society, a singular treatment of enjoyment through the letter; iii. that it is not, therefore, a technique that establishes categories, but rather ana-normative ethics; iv. that the Lacan of the 1970s, having offered an in-depth critique of his ownaxioms, proceeded to the nether side of his own teaching via a pluralisation of the Names-of-the-Father and a generalization of the symptom; v., that his thought culminated in a purely immanent conception of normative processes, while steering clear of historicism or Foucauldian relativism.Indeed, Lacan maintains the ex-sistence of an impossible and a real that puncture the plane of practice, whose economy alone is not sufficient for an intelligibility of norms

Full textThe purpose of this thesis is to analyze the program of rationality which structure the lacanian psychoanalysis from a dialectical perspective taking into consideration Adorno negative dialectic. The similarity between lacanian clinic and negative dialectic has to do with the importance given to the theory of negations in the processes of structuring subjectivation. According to Lacan, the analytic cure demands subjectivation of a mode of negation which is not a indication of a non-being, a rejection out of the ego from that which goes against the principle of pleasure (Verwerfung), denegation (Verneinung), self-denial of the utterance (Verleugnung), but which is a type of presence of the Real. There is cure only when there is recognition of the negation as an expression of Real. The lacanian clinic, then needs a ontological negation which appears monstly in sublimation and the traverse of the fantasy. It is the core of the negative dialectics with the project of self-critic of the concept. However, Hegel was already aware of this articulation , since dialects is based in the discrepancy between designation and meaning in the speech act. In this sense, Adorno's and Lacan's originality consists of understanding that recognition of an ontological negation only occurs apart from the processes of symbolization, remembrance and conceptualization. From there comes the lacanian project: to structure the clinic from non-conceptual processes of formalization like the mathème and the lettre. From there comes the Adornian project: to consider the aesthetic formalization as support of a content of truth. This perspective shows the limits of analytic symbolization's operators (such as the Phallus and the Nome-of-the-Father) provides an ehtical thinking beyond the transcendental determination of will and opens a new filed for the articulation between aesthetics and psychoanalysis

Full textIn the field of psychoanalysis, the concept of sublimation acts as a problem. In this thesis, we use architecture to comprehend J. Lacan’s most elaborate definition: sublimation « elevates an objet to the dignity of the Thing ». This definition raises the question of the possibility of a relationship between the real and the symbolic through the imaginary. Die Sublimierung is, for S. Freud, an enigma; J. Lacan changes this into a paradox. In our study, we examine and develop this paradox. The main hypothesis is that there are two logical times of sublimation: the “time zero”, which we link to the creation ex-nihilo of the Void, and the “time one”, which is the elevation of an objet to the dignity of the Thing, that we then link to the illusion of space. Our research strives to contribute to the field of art as applied to psychoanalysis in the following ways: the apologue of the vase, the ready-mades of Duchamp, the poetry of courtly love, the anamorphoses, the Italien Annonciation, the drawing of the « Ark » of Hugues de Saint-Victor, miraculous images, Eupalino’s architecture, the Vitruvian theory of architecture and the architects of the Renaissance and gothic architecture. This thesis is divided into four parts, of which the first two ones concentrate on the theoretical aspect of the three elements of the Lacanian formula of sublimation, and of which the last two ones concentrate on the arts applied to this formula: painting and architecture. We attempt to prove that the latter helps us to extract and analyse the logic of sublimation: ART-chitecture meets the real of the Thing and at the same time it make us have a relationship with our own Void as subjects of desire

Full textThis dissertation aims at questioning the relationship between the surrealist movement and the thinking of Jacques Lacan, as regards his conception of psychoses and the ethics of psychoanalysis. The author firstly demonstrates that surrealists may be greatly interested in insanity and psychoanalysis, yet are ultimately unintelligent of Freud's ideas. The surrealists referred to throughout Lacan's works rather appear as dissidents of the movement : Dali, as well as members of the Collège de Sociologie and the Acéphale review, mainly Bataille and Masson. Lacan lays dowm paranoia as a new paradigm for the foundations of psychoanalysis. This is also a predominant theme in Dali's work, as a result of his paranoiac-critical method which puts to the test the very notion of reality. Yet the Lacanian idea of a mirroring stage gives rise to Hegelian developments on insanity that refuse the surrealistically-speaking wonderful. Moreover, in Lacan's view, the image is considered for its signifying dimension rather than as a figure for itself, as in Lyotard's perspective driven from surrealism. Conversely, passionate love, as surrealists see it, testifies to a search for completeness as loggerheads with the Lacanian formula : “There is no such thing as a sexual relationship”. Bellmer, another lonely rider within the movement, and his companion Unica Zürn, a schizophrenic artist, have produced works that can be seen as a tentative for articulating sentential framing and body according to a pattern close to that which regards the unconscious as structured through language. However, the surrealist rebellion proves unfit to provide a support for genuine ethics of desire, such as articulated by Lacan about Antigone. Lacan and surrealism have built up a relationship based on misunderstanding, yet a fruitful one. For the surrealists, through unaware of if, have opened the path to the unveiling of the signifier, while Lacan has unravelled its logic

Full textPsychosis teaches us about an "ailment" that afflicts ail humans: they are beings made of speech, whose relationship with the animated realm has always been traumatic. This Lacanian outlook undermines the neo-humanistic and scientific-like approach of psychosis promoted by the DSM, in which psychosis is either turned into a banality or chastised, placed as it is on the continuum neurosis-psychosis and disconnected from the talking cures even by many psychoanalysts. This pre-Freudian perspective sustains the scientific psychiatry as well as the neurosciences; in their prevalent discourse, hallucination is still considered as a false perception which can disappear through medication try to show here that a perspective which is both logic and inspired by the fundamentals of modern science can maintain that, for a human being, speech and the organic factor are interconnected following the three Lacanian registers, the real, the symbolic, and the imaginary. The resulting body (corps) is neither the corpse examined in laboratories nor an element of statistics. And if the subject as an effect of language vanishes within the field of the drive and of "jouissance", this does not mean that it is non-existent, since a subject can be supposed as soon as speech encounters the living body. Based on this distinction, I propose a conceptual and clinical investigation of American psychoanalysis, especially of one of its "post modern" branches, intersubjectivity. Two case studies, one by an American psychoanalyst, the other my own, are meant to demonstrate that it is the analyst's position in transference that plays the decisive role with respect to "any possible treatment of psychosis"

Full textFor the first part of this thesis, we analyzed the series of major acts that Sade has done in his life. The reconstruction of the causality of his actions can illuminate the value of the factual final act of Sade. The major stake was therefore to find out after what acts the testamentary act emerges from Sade at the end of his life. So we try to clarify the actions that marked his life, one by one, in three different registers - love, politics and theater - to highlight the singularity of the testamentary act de Sade. For the second part of this thesis, we will attempt to locate the Sadian in relation to other acts performed by Sade antagonists. For this, we refer to the diagram known as the quadripartite four discourses, which aims at clarifying the nature of social ties in the four different ways that are connected with each other: the master's discourse of the hysteric, of the academic, and of the analyst. This analysis of different intersubjectivities around Sade leads to the elucidation of the psychoanalytic discourse. We will address in particular the discrepancy that exists between the ultimate Sadian act and the analytic act. To check the gap between the two types of discourses we proceed, at the end of this thesis, to the reading of History of Juliet. Although the Marquis touches the transferential dimension (there is a series of falls of the subject supposed to know), the adventure of this Sadian character takes place outside the analytical framework. Sade does not know how to discern the creativity in the death drive, contrary to the analyst who can see it in and by the analytic act

Full textJacques Lacan's "retour a Freud" is based on the identification of the linguistic structure - underscored by Ferdinand de Saussure - with the structure of the unconscious. His main assertion: "the unconscious is structured like a language" rests on an interpretation of the saussurian sign with considers only the notion of differential value, that is to say facts that convey meaning. This new definition of the sign brings about the questioning of a certain number of linguistic presupposition : the notion of meaning related to the sign, of significant intentionality, of communication, and the notion of cartesian subject as a basic principal of all sciences. With the Freudian unconscious, the meaning and the subject are submitted to the signifiant. In this way, Lacan lays down the suprematy of the signifiant in the establishing of the meaning and the subject. The subject is no longer the master of his speech, he is spoken : he becomes the subject of the unconscious. As in Jacobson, the elaboration of the meaning will follow the two axes of language, referred to the two figures of metaphor and metonymy. Metonymy is the path of desire, being identified with always lacks an element that would convey meaning. With the evocation of this lacking signifiant, metaphor makes up the only figure to represent the subject. Since Lacan assert that "there is no metalanguage" the question is whether it is

Full textThis research develops a critical reading of some we consider the main topics of the theory as well as of the clinic of the psychoanalysis proposed by Lacan and some of his followers. This reading is derived from the discussions of elements that emerge from the intercross between Lacan's psychoanalysis and literature. The election of this research field is based, in our opinion, in the fact that the elements which we are interested in analyzing are exposed there with particular intensity. In general terms, the question which this thesis brings up is how a relationship between psychoanalysis and literature that pretends to be and should be fruitful (as displayed in the usual discourses of psychoanalysts as well as in the fact that literature is a major creative art), ends up in being the dwelling of unproductive and paralyzing psychoanalytical clichés. We look for the answers by considering that underneath many concepts here implied lies the presence of the Subjective phantasms - we adventure unanalyzed - of Lacan, denied as such and transposed as theoretical truths. We explore in detail, for example, the phallic inflation as repressed return of Lacan's relation to castration and to femininity. This exercise allows certain explanation of theoretical-clinical factors of very conflictive repercussions. For example, the magnified exaltation of paternal function and the extremely severe conflict of analysts to Knowledge. Finally, we see the relationship between lacanian psychoanalysis and literature as a symptomatic relationship, rich in elements to analyze

It allows us to make links betweencontemporary psychoanalysis and cognitive sciences, and it enlightens theirhermeneutical exegesis particularities of the cybernetic machine’s conception at thesame time. In the light of cybernetics’ theories includind texts of Turing, Lacan readin cybernetic terms the Freudian concepts of psychic apparatus in order to includethe contributions of Saussurian and Levi-Straussian structuralism. Lacan presents apsychoanalytic reading of cybernetics based on philosophy, offering a Kanto-Bergsonian reading of the «theory of game», a Kierkegaardian feedback andAristotelian automatic. It allows him to reveal the epistemological importance of thepassage from a spatial conception of a mechanical located device to a timeconception of a logical machine without location, through the advent of Freudiantopography. Full textLacan starts his work by the clinical lecture of psychosis and his structural approach allows him to develop a theoretical way out to the Freudian dead-end using the notion of the Name-of-the-Father which foreclosure would determine the psychotic structure. Through this major concept, we notice quite late in his writings the notion of sinthome allowing the conception of an "untriggered" psychotic state. The legacy left is the notion o suppleance as an alternative to the foreclosure of the Name-of-the-Father. In order to construct it theoretically, Lacan introduced the Borromean chain in psychoanalysis since this mathematical representation shows the kind of a possible knot, and its failures, among real, symbolic and imaginary orders. Finally, this representation shows that those three orders always stand together by the action of a fourth element: the Name of-the-Father, or the signifier that replace it as a suppleance. Some use to defend that this theoretical transition represents a renunciation of the structuralist episteme. However, Lacan never abandons the concept of foreclosure and what it involves as a structure, that is specifically the clinical structure, is still current in psychoanalysis

Full textThe aim of this Ph. D. Is to show the present relevance of Freud's socio-clinical project by clarifying thecche aut malaise in contemporary society. Based upon the psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan and the political philosophy of Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben, the present work proposes a psychoanalytic anthropology of bio-political society, in other words it draws a parallel between the pathogenesis that characterises modem society (clinique du social) and the pathology of the subject as expressed nowadays through the body and its vicissitudes (clinique du cas). One of the main issues of this work has been that of a critical approach of the explanation of bodily phenomena (primarily psychosomatic ones) by means of the post-modem theory of symbolic collapse. Indeed, the interest of this research into psychosomatic-dermatological phenomena consists in the exploration of this type of phenomena in relation to the processes of desymbolization (homo sacer, to be a body, formless) and bio-symbolisation (bio-political subject, to have a body, forms-of-life) which are characteristic of the apparatus (dispositifs) of subjectivization in late modernity

Full textThis thesis amplifies the notion of the subject of law, conceiving him as an effect of the Name-of-the-Father metaphor. It analyses the Lacan´s proposition of the three quarter of a turn, from the analyst’s discourse, within the structural matrix of the four discourses’ paradigm, in order to arise a new style of significant in respect to Law. It presents as a pillar for this transdisciplinary approach the dialogue established between Perelman and Lacan in the text The metaphor of the subject, where this one illustrates the influence of the subconscious logic upon the practical reason. It analyses the inversion of the mobile terms that appears in the Master´s Discourse from the fifth lacanian formula of the Capitalist Discourse. This deviance changes the minimal paradigm of language and produces effects of metonymisation upon current discourses and socials bonds. Liberal discourses hold other reports with the new ordinary foolishness. Within this reversal, the legal system, as an instance which apportions between enjoyment in the society, seems to be more at the service of the liberalism than that of the prohibition of humanization. Psychoanalysis applied to the casuistry of Law in connection with the Homoparental Adoption shows that future generations can incure risks of unmetaphorization. Homosexuality is not an identity, indeed it cannot be erected as a legal status of the person. The principle of precaution is indicated to face the risks of changement of the symbolic system of parentality and of filiation for everyone. This system having a real kinship with the Other sex. This normative change occasioning therefor a capitus diminuto for the children’s Rights

By taking Lacan’s return to Freud by means of Levi-Strauss as a starting point (1951-1957), the thesis aims to situate lacan’s thought in the horizon of the most important debates of the 20th century in social sciences. Firstly, Lacan finds structural linguistics through Levi-Strauss’s notion of symbolic function (1951-1957). Secondly, through the autonomy of the symbolic order causing the phallus revolution in his teaching, he can no longer follow Levi-Strauss in his path (1956-1958). Finally, Lacan is able to elaborate the object a (1958-1963) from the remnant of structural analysis

Full textThe current situation of psychiatric institutions in Israel is divided between a discourse of medical orientation mixed with a rehabilitation orientation. The question which guides the research is to know if psychoanalysis, in a Freudo-Lacanian orientation, could guide the therapeutic practice in a psychiatric service, could deviate from the real of the drive, of the object a in the context of the institutional life, could provide possibilities for re-education in medical practice and in all the activity existing in the service of a psychiatric hospital in which the subject is taken into account in the psychoanalytic sense. In the framework of this thesis, we will try to shed light on certain aspects of the truth of the practice of a psychiatric service, through the Lacanian psychoanalytic orientation, through a reading of the practice and of qualitative interviews with key members of a psychiatric service in Israel, and therefore add or open up new possibilities enabling better care. This research will allow us to demonstrate, through three case presentations, the use of psychoanalytic discourse in a psychiatric service of the Shalvata hospital, which has a close link with psychoanalysis. However, there is a great confusion between the humanist approach and the psychoanalytic orientation. When humanism takes control of the therapeutic encounter and psychoanalysis or psychotherapy becomes a tool to achieve the humanist goal, they lose their power and only serve as a defense against anxiety. The humanist approach is a necessary but not sufficient condition for psychoanalysis to be a discourse used to guide the treatment in a service. It is about using the analytical discourse, making of the real a common clinical question. Our analysis indicates that psychoanalysis applied to therapy in a psychiatric service is not a matter of frame, of setting, but rather of discourse. The practical orientation in the institution means treating the subject's symptom respectfully and of trying to accompany him in the pragmatic search for a more effective solution, which would allow him to better manage with the other, to moderate his jouissance, to get along better with his body, all this based on the indications given to us by the subject

Full textThis doctorate research aims at a holistic study of the field of aesthetic surgeries from the psychoanalytical perspective of the Lacanian orientation. The hypothesis of this thesis is that an intervention in the real of the body has a subjective function, which must always be understood from a singular history. The literature review proposes a non-exhaustive presentation of psychoanalytical studies on aesthetic surgeries. These studies show that an interpretation of subjective phenomena based on a nosographic and psychopathological generalization is reductive. The theoretical framework of this work has been divided into two main parts. The first, the body in the structural clinic, articulates the concepts of the first Freudian and Lacanian elaborations : the drive, the narcissism, the ego, the mirror stage and the Name-of-the-Father. The second part, the body in the clinic oriented by jouissance, proposes a revision of the status of the body in Lacan’s last teaching and is also based on the notion of ordinary psychosis proposed by Jacques-Alain Miller. The clinic of the sinthomatic knotting, of the incidence of lalangue on the flesh and the approach of feminine jouissance, allows us to consider the specific solutions to each parlêtre in order to deal with the enigma of the proper body. Through the clinical vignettes presented and the four cases discussed, those of Marie Dallée, Orlan, the couple of Genesis and Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge and Jessica Alves, we claim to have demonstrated that aesthetic surgery can be apprehended as an attempt of solution, sometimes sinthomatic, to make a body fit together
Leikert, Sebastian. "La perversion du signifiant : éléments et constructions d'une interprétation psychanalytique de la musique." Paris 8, 1995. http://www.theses.fr/1995PA081029.
Full textThe lacanian theory is applied to the discourse of music. The voice, object cause of desire in music, is studied in it's cathartive function, which ha often been mistrustred, because it is not loyal to any moral code. The signifier of the discourse of music is different from the signifier of language, because he is not shaped by a mulitude of letters and can therefore not bind a stable signication by a fixed constellation of letters. Also, music can, by no means, express a negation, the economy of pleasure, however, depends on a psychic strudcture, which is based on negation : the name-of-the-father. So the questiopn arrises, how a subject, submitted to this discourse, can find a stable position. This question is discussed with regard to the well tempered piano of j. S. Bach, where a constellation of letters and notes replacs the name-of-the-father, with regard to the ninth sinfonie of l. V. Beethoven, where the the failiure of this essay is demonstrated and with regard to the work of james joyce, which is based on a musical relation to the signifier

Full textOur thesis examines the originality and the pertinence of Lacan's approach to verbal hallucinations. We say "originality' because Lacan's contributions break from an the previous models, principally those of psychiatry, by introducing a true epistemological break. This is what we have sought to demonstrate by focussing on the clinical and theoretical consequences. Thus, after offering some theoretical data in the first part — which is an indispensable condition for the clinical applications and the ultimate extraction in the following parts of something that constitutes a teaching — and giving an account in the second part of the essential forms of verbal hallucinition (which are deduced from Lacan's contributions), we examine in the third part the essential place that hallucination holds in psychosis, with consideration of the teaching that this can produce conceming this psychical structure. In the fourth part, we turn our attention to the articulation between verbal hallucination and different concepts or themes that concem psychoanalysis, thereby further extending the teaching that we propose to extract from verbal hallucinations (these problematics are as follows: silence, enunciation, the superego, the signifying chain and, finally, the end of analysis). Lastly, in the fifth and final part, we have sought to explore a clinical domain that is seldom studied: verbal hallucinations in children. There we try to reply to the question: is there a specificity to hallucinatory phenomena in children?
Leader, Darian. "Comment un corps agit-t-il sur un autre ? : études lacaniennes autour de la comédie." Paris 8, 1992. http://www.theses.fr/1992PA080777.
Full textHow doex one body act on another? psychoanalysis replies that to understand the effect un question, language itself must be taken as a body. Our thesis is that comedy, together with other forms of humour, involves a presentation of the ways in which language grasps the body. The historyn of comic drama is examined to show the logical stages by which language acts on the living being. There follows a study of the structure and intersubjective place of jokes. The results of this research are applied to a clinical problem, perversion, to show that its central motif consists in the dramatisation of the effecst of the body of the symbolic on the subject. The results of the study of comedy are linked to this clinical category

Full textWhat is demonic possession but the expression of an archaic belief ? Before we discuss this minimalist definition, let us be aware of the fact that our modern ways are still under scrutiny : Never before has the number of possession cases and exorcism requests been this high. Where are those phenomena coming from? The psychoanalytical theory is leading us at the frontier between neurosis ans psychosis, between the mystic’s radically Other Jouissance of the mystic and the other’s jouissance. This allow us to take hold of the psyche's structure escape points as well as considering the inversion of the demonic possession into a mystical one, inversion by means of the lacanian topology. Finally, we have to look at possession as a way of being in the world, a discursive manner answering a mutation in the paternal function, itself affecting the contemporary social bond
Gonzalez, Marc. "Nominations ethnonymiques en Louisiane francophone. Production d'identités et subjectivités poétiques." Thesis, Montpellier 3, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011MON30094.
Full textThe study relates to an essential act of re-designation, to give a new proper name to people in a minority situation. This French-speaking community of Louisiana is indicated by an ethnonymic paradigm of a score of spelling variants which can be reduced to four concurrent series: Cajun, Cadien, Acadian, Cadjin, then with the problematical ethnonymic pair Cajun/Cadien. It is this denominational fluctuation which we will examine because each ethnonymic meaning is associated with specific representations which build ethno-linguistic identities of the group which are different and even competing. This process of redenomination which is supposed to revalorize the community’s image is certainly legitimate in a context of a withering language and culture but this nominative Babel, this “disease of the proper name” called “ethnonymic dystropia” has a double cost, meta-psychological and sociological, subjective and identity. We are witnessing a “symbolical forcing” because a “re-naming of one’s self” must be subjective and not imposed, it should rather have an effect as a reference designator, an indication of a community recognition and of an identity recognition, and also an indication of a subjective meaning which belongs to what Jacques Lacan calls “lalangue” which is the subject of the subconscious and desire that is speaking. It is by an operation of subjectification that the cajun/cadjin subject will be able to identify itself as a cadien subject and this process seems to be energized today in Louisiana by the rebirth of a poetic writing which promotes the ethnonym Cadien by the means of a system of inter-subjective enunciation full of affect, which opens the reader to a possible ethnonymic identification
