Abstract:
Purpose Perceived workplace support (PWS) is an employee’s perception of perceived organisational support (POS), perceived supervisor support (PSS), perceived co-worker support (PCS) and perceived sufficient resource support (PSRS) to operate effectively. The purpose of this paper is to explore the development and validation of employee’s PWS instrument in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Design/methodology/approach A total of 15 items of employees’ PWS instrument in SMEs were developed from the measurement base of earlier published research, concepts and theory. The instrument was applied to a cross-sectional study and data were collected as factor analyses to confirm and ascertain construct validity. Reliability was tested by measuring the internal consistency. Findings The instrument showed excellent reliability at 0.894. Four factors as “POS”, “PSS”, “PCS” and “PSRS” were extracted and confirmed from the confirmatory factor analysis. Originality/value PWS studies are often used by researchers, human resource departments and organisations to investigate the level of employee support. The instrument developed from this study will enable researchers, human resource departments and organisations to explore levels of POS, PSS, PCS and PSRS.

Abstract:
Seizure after stroke or poststroke seizure (PSS) is a common and very important complication of stroke. It can be divided into early seizure and late seizure, depending on seizure onset time after the stroke. It has been reported that ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke accounts for about 11% of all adult epilepsy cases and 45% of epilepsy cases over 60 years of age. However, there are no reliable guidelines in clinical practice regarding most of the fundamental issues of PSS management. In recent years there has been an increased interest in the study of PSS which may give clinical practitioners a better picture of how to optimise PSS management. Studies have indicated two peaks in PSS occurrence—the first day and 6–12 months after a stroke. Haemorrhagic stroke, cortical involvement, severity of initial neurological deficit, younger patients (<65 years of age), family history of seizures and certain genetic factors carry a higher risk of PSS. The use of continuous electroencephalogram has demonstrated significant benefits in capturing interictal or ictal abnormalities, especially in cases of non-convulsive seizures and non-convulsive status epilepticus. Current available data indicated that there was no significant difference in antiepileptic efficacy among most of the antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) in PSS. Levetiracetam and lamotrigine are the most studied newer generation AEDs and have the best drug tolerance. The purpose of this review is to summarise the recent advances in PSS research and focus on the most important practice issues of PSS management.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a product-service systems (PSS) risk management decision-making framework for PSS operation, which can enable global manufacturing companies to offer PSS successfully. Thus, the authors aim to contribute primarily to developing the PSS literature by integrating insights from the literatures on risk management and decision making. Design/methodology/approach – This study is based on an exploratory, single case study with a Swedish manufacturing company that has long-term experience with providing PSS. In total, the authors conducted 25 semi-structured interviews with diverse respondents from different functional units. Findings – The study’s main findings include identifying and proposing an interconnection between the operational risks associated with providing PSS, possible risk management responses, and decision criteria, all of which enable decision makers to select an appropriate risk management response. Research limitations/implications – The study contributes to the literature in three ways. First, the authors classify PSS operational risks into three categories related to delivery competence risks, technical risks, and behavioural risks. Second, the authors explain conditions under which each risk can be mitigated using different risk management strategies (avoidance, reduction, sharing/transfer, and retention). Finally, the authors combine different risk categorizations, decision criteria, and risk responses into an integrated decision framework of PSS risk management. Originality/value – The novel contribution is developing a PSS risk management decision support framework, which holds theoretical and practical value.

Abstract:
Purpose – Product-service system (PSS) has been attracting attentions of global manufacturing to providing high-value added services in addition to their traditional product development and manufacturing business. For this reason, it is of great importance to research PSS. The purpose of this paper is to establish a systematic strategy and a system tool for PSS design. Design/methodology/approach – A requirement-driven product-service system (RdPPS) is developed using requirements analysis and knowledge management technologies. A framework is proposed to support RdPPS by providing tools and methods for requirement analysis and processing, formalization of PSS by ontology-based knowledge representation, reasoning method for PSS solution finding, and solution optimizing and assessing. Finally, the design support strategies for RdPPS are investigated to demonstrate the usability and functioning of the developed system. Findings – Many conventional design methods did not consider the influence of customer requirements (CRs) during the planning phase of PSS design. Moreover, a broader range of knowledge is required to PSS design, since both products and services are considered. Research limitations/implications – This research provides a solid foundation for PSS, and promotes an effective means for PSS design. Originality/value – A RdPSS is presented. CRs are considered during the design phase of PSS as well as both product and service knowledge.

Abstract:
Two of the limitations associated with cancer treatment are the low efficacy and the high dose-related side effects of anticancer drugs. The purpose of the current study was to fabricate biocompatible multifunctional drug-loaded nanoscale moieties for co-therapy (chemo-photothermal therapy) with maximum efficacy and minimum side effects. Herein, we report in vitro anticancerous effects of doxorubicin (DOX) loaded on gold nanorods coated with the polyelectrolyte poly(sodium-4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS-GNRs) with and without NIR laser (808 nm, power density = 1.5 W/cm2 for 2 min) irradiation. The drug-loading capacity of PSS-GNRs was about 76% with a drug loading content of 3.2 mg DOX/mL. The cumulative DOX release significantly increased after laser exposure compared to non-irradiated samples (p < 0.05). The zeta potential values of GNRs, PSS-GNRs and DOX-PSS-GNRs were measured as 42 ± 0.1 mV, −40 ± 0.3 mV and 39.3 ± 0.6 mV, respectively. PSS-GNRs nanocomplexes were found to be biocompatible and showed higher photothermal stability. The DOX-conjugated nanocomplexes with NIR laser irradiation appear more efficient in cell inhibition (93%) than those without laser exposure (65%) and doxorubicin alone (84%). The IC50 values of PSS-GNRs-DOX and PSS-GNRs-DOX were measured as 7.99 and 3.12 µg/mL, respectively, with laser irradiation. Thus, a combinatorial approach based on chemotherapy and photothermal strategies appears to be a promising platform in cancer management.

Abstract:
AbstractRecent economic transformations have forced companies to redefine their value propositions, increasing traditional product offerings with supplementary services—the so-called Product-Service System (PSS). Among them, the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies is very common. However, the directions that companies are undertaking to offer new value to their customers in the Industry 4.0 have not yet been investigated in detail. Based on a focus group, this paper contributes to this understanding by identifying the main trajectories that would shape a future scenario in which PSS and Industry 4.0 would merge. In addition, future research directions addressing (a) the transformation of the PSS value chain into a PSS ecosystem, (b) the transformation inside a single company towards becoming a PSS provider, and (c) the digital transformation of the traditional PSS business model are identified.

Abstract:
Portosystemic shunt (PSS) without a definable cause is a rare condition, and most of the studies on this topic are small series or based on case reports. Moreover, no firm agreement has been reached on the definition and classification of various forms of PSS, which makes it difficult to compare and analyze the management. The blood flow can be seen very similar to an electric current, governed by Ohm’s law. The simulation of PSS using an electric circuit, combined with the interpretation of reported management results, can provide intuitive insights into the underlying mechanism of PSS development. In this article, we have built a model of PSS using electric circuit symbols and explained clinical manifestations as well as the possible mechanisms underlying a PSS formation.

Abstract:
Product service systems (PSS) may usefully form part of the mix of innovations necessary to move society towards more sustainable futures. However, despite such potential, PSS implementation is highly uneven and limited. Drawing on an alternate sociotechnical perspective of innovation, this article provides fresh insights on, among other things, the role of context in PSS innovation, to address this issue. Case study research is presented focusing on a use-orientated PSS in an urban environment: the Copenhagen city bike scheme. The article shows that PSS innovation is a situated complex process, shaped by actors and knowledge from other locales. It argues that further research is needed to investigate how actors’ interests shape PSS innovation. It recommends that institutional spaces should be provided in governance landscapes associated with urban environments to enable legitimate PSS concepts to co-evolve in light of locally articulated sustainability principles and priorities.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to focus on three organizational support factors that could potentially improve organizational commitment among downsizing survivors.Design/methodology/approachUsing a sample of 2,751 employees, a secondary analysis of employee survey data examined the hypotheses that customer service orientation (CSO) and equity would moderate the strength of the two‐way interaction between perceived organizational support (POS) and perceived supervisor support (PSS) when predicting organizational commitment among downsizing survivors. In this way, the impact of CSO (H1) or equity (H2) would be stronger when POS and PSS were low. A third hypothesis (H3) examined whether survivors' organizational tenure was positively related to organizational commitment.FindingsH1 and H2 were partially confirmed, indicating that CSO compensated most when PSS was low and that equity compensated most when POS was low among downsizing survivors. H3 was not confirmed as no positive correlation was found between survivors' increased organizational tenure and organizational commitment.Research limitations/implicationsThe sample was drawn from one US organization and, because this was a secondary analysis, established scales could not be used for some constructs. Most of the variance in the exploratory factor analysis was on the first factor, POS.Practical implicationsOrganizations should make every attempt to maintain or increase survivors' CSO and equity in order to improve organizational commitment. In addition, organizations cannot necessarily rely on their longer‐tenured employees to stay committed after a downsizing.Originality/valueThe study uncovered two previously unknown findings regarding the importance of CSO and equity to the organizational commitment of survivors.

Abstract:
227 Background: US Oncology, Inc., Texas Oncology (TxO) and Aetna are engaged in a pilot program, Innovent Oncology (IOP) to evaluate clinical and financial impacts of Pathways (PW), a nursing call intervention for chemotherapy patients (pt support services-PSS), and an advance care planning (ACP) initiative. We report quality initiatives, PW compliance and ACP, from the program at 18 months, and IP and ER admits at 12 months. Methods: Eligible Aetna pts with PW diagnoses, treated by TxO were enrolled. PW compliance was tracked. PSS calls occurred at regular intervals during chemotherapy. Symptoms, quality of life, and depression were screened each call with referrals to TxO as needed for management. ACP was initiated in month 2 of IOP. To support IOP, a leadership team comprising physicians, pharmacists and nurses was established. IP,ER data on predefined subgroups were compared to diagnosis-adjusted rates from the baseline prior year. Results: The program enrolled 184 patients from June 1, 2010 – Decembe 30, 2011 with 278 regimens ordered. Pathway adherence improved from 67% to 75%. 81% enrolled in PSS; of these, 83% were introduced to ACP, with 11% (n=16) completing a full ACP discussion. PSS made 906 calls to pts and assessed pain at 80% of contacts. IP, ER utilization rates after 12 months of IOP are reported (see Table). Conclusions: This is a preliminary evaluation with small numbers. Results suggest cancer patients can be identified pre-treatment; a proactive nurse call system is feasible and well received; a symptom assessment tool can be systematically implemented, communication on ACP initiated; and a pathways program enhanced. A reduction of ER visits by 39.8%, IP admits by 16.5 %, and inpatient days/member by 35.9% are very promising trends. A bootstrap shows 97% of scenarios with IP utilization reduction, and 96% with ER utilization reduction. [Table: see text]

Abstract:
The service-centered economy has grown considerably in the last few years, shifting from product-based solutions towards service centered offerings, i.e., Product-Service System (PSS) solutions. Such an approach is also emerging in the context of building equipment, where maintenance activities play a fundamental role in facility management. In this field, Building Information Modeling (BIM) based tools are diffusely used to improve the performances of facility management. However, few studies have addressed the above issues while considering a shift from product-based approaches in favor of more advanced servitization models. The study aims at integrating BIM based approaches in a PSS context for the improvement of the management of maintenance operations of building equipment. A general framework for maintenance management has been developed, merging the implementation of the PSS components in a BIM model for the definition of maintenance management. A first application of this methodology to a real case study concerning the elevators of an existing building has shown the efficacy of the proposed approach. The study highlighted the benefits that can be achieved, especially in terms of reduced periods of equipment unavailability, reduced costs and augmented customer satisfaction, while enhancing the information exchange between the PSS actors. Hence, although further research is still needed for its validation, the proposed approach can offer practical insights for the development of promising BIM-based PSS solutions for facility management in the construction industry.

Abstract Introduction Several studies have shown the consequences of COVID-19 pandemic on perceived stress of different populations, but none of them analyzed urological patients who underwent elective surgery. Methods We enrolled prospectively patients who underwent elective surgery between March and October 2020. A survey on COVID-19 and the 4-item Perceived Stress Scale (PPS-4) questionnaire were administered at hospital admission. Demographic and medical history data were also collected. Uni- and multivariate analyses were performed to identify independent predictors of higher PSS-4 values (≥7). Results A total of 200 patients were enrolled. Mean PSS-4 value resulted 6.04. Patients with PSS-4 value ≥7 resulted 43.5% (87/200). In multivariate analysis, PSS-4 value ≥7 was independently associated (p < 0.05) with female gender (OR 6.42), oncological disease (OR 2.87), high (>5 in a range between 0 and 10) fear of intrahospital transmission of SARS-CoV-2 infection (OR 4.75), history of bladder instillation (OR 0.26), and current smokers (OR 0.27) Conclusion High PSS-4 values at hospital admission in urologic surgical patients are positively correlated with female gender, fear of intrahospital transmission of SARS-CoV-2 infection, and oncological disease. PSS-4 questionnaire could be useful to select patients for whom a preadmission counselling is necessary to improve the management of their high stress level.

Abstract:
Purpose The global textile-fashion industry is resource inefficient thus requiring higher product-service systems (PSS) intervention. Further, insight of how PSS extends corporate responsibility is rather limited; knowledge of which may contribute towards increased PSS viability. The purpose of this paper is to explore how companies operating with used-clothing PSS extend their responsibilities through servitization. Design/methodology/approach An exploratory study of seven companies operating with various used-clothing PSS is conducted through semi-structured interviews and supplementary document studies. Findings Six dominant ways through which servitization drives responsibility in used-clothing PSS are identified. These are through: value-adding services, product leverage, collaborative partnership, information transparency, awareness and platform-enabled networking. Two trade-offs exist in terms of their focus on physical process or digitalization, and developed by honing core competency or collaborative partnership. Further three differentiating attributes underlie these mechanisms for: raising awareness and/or improving transparency, collaboration in value creation and/or in promoting consumption, and product ownership and/or leverage. Research limitations/implications A wide range of used-clothing PSS exists each in its own way extending responsibility. In-depth studies are required to investigate the relationship between servitization and extended responsibility for diverse PSS-types and on type of responsibilities they address. Practical implications By identifying the key mechanisms or ways and their underlying characteristics companies can identify new servitization forms and ways to extend their responsibility, identify best practices and establish viability beyond the traditional measures, e.g. financial. Originality/value So far no studies have investigated the role of servitization in PSS and how it extends corporate responsibility, especially in industries like textile-fashion, where both resource efficiency and responsibility is low.

Abstract:
Implementation of product-service systems (PSS) requires structural changes in the way that business in manufacturing industries is traditionally conducted. Literature frequently mentions the importance of human resource management (HRM), since people are involved in the entire process of PSS development and employees are the primary link to customers. However, to this day, no study has provided empirical evidence whether and in what way HRM of firms that implement PSS differs from HRM of firms that solely run a traditional manufacturing-based business model. The aim of this study is to contribute to closing this gap by investigating the particular HR components of manufacturing firms that implement PSS and compare it with the HRM of firms that do not. The context of this study is the fashion industry, which is an ideal setting since it is a mature and highly competitive industry that is well-documented for causing significant environmental impact. PSS present a promising opportunity for fashion firms to differentiate and mitigate the industry’s ecological footprint. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to analyze data of 102 international fashion firms. Findings reveal a significant higher focus on nearly the entire spectrum of HRM components of firms that implement PSS compared with firms that do not. Empirical findings and their interpretation are utilized to propose a general framework of the role of HRM for PSS implementation. This serves as a departure point for both scholars and practitioners for further research, and fosters the understanding of the role of HRM for managing PSS implementation.

Abstract:
Introduced under the Transforming Rehabilitation reforms, the Offender Rehabilitation Act 2014 created a period of post-sentence supervision (PSS) after licence for individuals serving short custodial sentences. This empirical study features on the ground views and perspectives of practitioners and service users of PSS in one case-study area. Findings from this research suggest a number of issues and ambiguities with the enactment of the sentence. These include ambiguities regarding the correct use of enforcement procedures; the antagonistic relationship between third sector and Community Rehabilitation Company staff, primarily centred around transferring cases and concerns over the use of ‘light touch’ supervision and uncertainties over what the rehabilitative aims of this sentence mean in practice. These issues led to practitioners questioning the legitimacy of the third sector organisation involved in the management of PSS, while service users experienced PSS as a frustrating ‘pass-the-parcel’ experience, where resettlement support was constantly stalled and restarted at each juncture of the sentence. Before briefly discussing the potential future of PSS under the next iteration of probation policy, this article concludes by arguing that there is emerging evidence of a commonality of failures occurring at every juncture of the short sentence, undermining resettlement prospects for the long-neglected short sentence population.

PurposeIn the age of Industry 4.0, digital advancement is reshaping manufacturing models towards product–service systems (PSS). The drivers, readiness and challenges to move to a PSS model are not well understood, and the exploitation of the digital era presents the gap of this research.Design/methodology/approachThe research was conducted using semi-structured interviews in six manufacturers. Two forum debates were also conducted to supplement and validate the findings.FindingsSocial and economic motivations rather than environmental considerations were driving the change to PSS. Digital technologies could be an important driver if manufacturers reached a certain PSS maturity level. A high level of technical readiness was offset by a low level of social investments and the strategic development of human resources. Value co-creation was a main challenge though manufacturers had the advantage of digital connectivity, which indicated new human requirements; the greater the enabling power of digital technologies, the greater the need for advanced human skills.Practical implicationsHuman resource management has underpinned lean models; yet, the role of employees within PSS is underdeveloped despite the impact of staff in exploiting digitalisation and value co-creation. A “learning organisation” and socio-technical fit are required for the “diffusion of innovation” of PSS.Originality/valueThis research attempted to explore drivers, readiness and challenges for PSS from a socio-technical systems (STS) perspective. Three levels of PSS maturity with STS features were derived from the research, providing guidance for manufacturers.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the photobactericidal effect of four photosensitizers (PSs) with different structural and physico-photochemical properties, namely mesotetracationic porphyrin (T4MPyP), dianionic rose Bengal (RB), monocationic methylene blue (MB) and neutral red (NR). Their photokilling activity was tested in vitro on pathogenic bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) suspended in nutrient broth (NB) and in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) through following their influence on the PSs antimicrobial efficacy. Photodynamic inactivation (PDI) experiments were performed using visible light (L) and different PSs concentrations (20–70 μM). The ability of these PSs to mediate bacterial photodynamic inactivation was investigated as a function of type of PS and its concentrations, spectral and physico-chemical properties, bacterial strain, irradiation time and suspending medium. Indeed, they showed antibacterial effects against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa with significant difference in potency. Staphylococcus aureus suspended in NB showed 0.92 log units reduction in viable count in the presence of T4MPyP at 20 μM. Changing the suspending medium from NB to PBS, S. aureus was successfully photoinactivated by T4MPyP (20 μM) when suspended in PBS at least time exposure (10 and 30 min), followed by MB and RB.

Abstract:
One of the most promising business models towards economic circularity is product-service system (PSS). Despite its great potential benefits, shifting the traditional business model of a manufacturer into PSS business model commonly refers to service transition and triggers inconsistencies between strategic direction and organization arrangement at an operational level. The absence of alignment between the service transition strategy and the PSS business model is greatly emphasized as a crucial enabler, risk factor and key success factor of the service transition. However, limited academic works have concretely contributed to the strategic alignment. Through a systematic literature review, this paper proposes a PSS business alignment that enables the manufacturer to identify the strategic objective of its service transition strategy and align it with PSS business model. The theoretical version of the proposed framework is redefined and redeveloped through two cycles of action research involving 11 Japanese companies.

Abstract:
Background: Caregivers are the initial gatekeepers in the health care management of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Methods: This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the factors associated with caregivers’ satisfaction with different levels of health care services in managing children with ASD in Kelantan. The satisfaction scores of 227 main caregivers of confirmed ASD children were assessed with a modified Parent Satisfaction Scale (PSS) questionnaire. Results: The analysis showed that caregivers who waited longer for a doctor’s consultation in primary care had a reduced PSS score, whereas caregivers who were satisfied with the waiting time in primary care had higher PSS scores. At the secondary care level, caregivers who possessed at least a diploma had reduced PSS scores, whereas caregivers who were satisfied with both doctors’ consultation times and occupational therapy appointments had higher PSS scores. At the tertiary care level, caregivers with an underlying medical problem and who had children undergoing occupational therapy for two months or more had reduced PSS scores. Nevertheless, the analysis showed that caregivers who were concerned with their children’s sleeping problems, who had been informed about parental support, who were satisfied with speech and occupational therapy appointments, who were satisfied with waiting times at tertiary care clinics, and who were satisfied with their doctor’s knowledge and experience had higher PSS scores. Conclusions: This study elucidated the importance of understanding caregivers’ satisfaction in attaining care for their ASD children and highlighted the need to promote factors that would increase caregivers’ satisfaction with current ASD services.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide further insight into operations management of the product-service (P-S) transition, known as servitization, and the resulting product service system (PSS) offerings. In exploring the P-S transition, this paper adopts a service-dominant (S-D) logic view of value creation, using it as a lens through which to explore value propositions of the P-S transition and their operations design. Design/methodology/approach – This paper presents an in-depth case study of an original equipment manufacturer of durable capital equipment who, over the last five years, has expanded its offerings to include use- and result-orientated PSS. The research design uses a multi-method approach; employing 28 in-depth qualitative interviews with customers and employees and analysis of texts, documents and secondary data including five years of enterprise resource planning (ERP), call centre and contract data. Findings – The paper identifies ten generic P-S attributes that are abstracted into four nested value propositions: asset value proposition; recovery value proposition; availability value proposition; and outcome value proposition. In examining the operations design for delivery of these value propositions, it is found that the role and importance of contextual variety increases as the organisation moves through the value propositions. Interdependencies amongst the value propositions and differences in operational design for each value proposition are also found. Research limitations/implications – The paper investigates PSS through a S-D logic mindset. First, the paper considers value propositions of PSS not according to “product” or “service” but in terms of how resources (both material and human) are optimally designed to co-create customer value. Second, a value co-creation system of nested value propositions is illustrated. In so doing, the findings have a number of implications for literature on both PSS and S-D logic. In addition, the research adds to the PSS literature through the identification and consideration of the concept of contextual use variety. Practical implications – The paper demonstrates the complexity of the transition from product to service. Specifically, service cannot be seen as a bolt-on extra to their product offering; complexity caused by interactions and changes to the core offering require a systems perspective and consideration of both firm and customer skills and resources. Originality/value – This paper extends existing literature on the P-S transition and its implications for operations management. Notably, it takes an S-D logic perspective of value creation and in so doing highlights the importance and role of contextual use variety in the P-S transition. It also provides further empirical evidence that the P-S transition cannot be treated as discrete stages but is evolutionary and requires a complex systems perspective.

Abstract:
Objective: To review current approaches to investigation and management of Paget-Schroetter syndrome (PSS). Methods: Relevant clinical studies and reports were searched for using MEDLINE and Embase databases and cross-referenced articles. Articles were extracted using keywords by the two authors independently. Principal findings: There is growing evidence of functional or positional anatomical defects, which lead to subtle intimal injury and a tendency for recurrence or poor outcome. Management of PSS remains controversial. Anticoagulation as a stand-alone treatment has lost favour. Active treatment with thrombolysis followed by consideration of thoracic decompression is recommended by most in the recent literature. Thrombolytic therapy appears to be a safe and efficacious method of establishing immediate patency of the axillary/subclavian vein. The timing and indications of decompression surgery are yet to be defined clearly. There are no randomized trials of treatment or management strategies in PSS. Conclusions: Treatment of PSS remains contentious. Most authors recommend active treatment with thrombolysis followed by thoracic decompression. Multicentre randomized trials are needed.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to test a comprehensive work-related attitudinal model relevant for job performance by extending the perceived organizational support (POS), job satisfaction, and organizational commitment model with both perceived supervisor support (PSS) and psychological contract breach attitudes. Design/methodology/approach – The proposed model was tested using a sample of a company’s 104 employees and through partial least squares analysis. Findings – A total of 23 percent of the variance in job performance was explained. Interactions among attitudes were all significant. PSS and psychological contract breach accounted for 70 percent of the POS variance. Research limitations/implications – There is a risk of common-method bias. The cross-sectional design limits making causal inferences. Practical implications – Instead of measuring employee attitudes in an amorphous way, managers can rely on the included attitudes since these are significant for job performance. The construct’s content allows managers to elaborate specific practices to improve staffs’ attitudinal state. Originality/value – This model incorporates five independent attitudes that any employee can experience. This is the first study that proposes and tests an interaction among all of them that is significant for job performance.

Abstract:
PurposeOrganizations increasingly develop and offer sharing services enabled by means of product-service systems (PSS). However, organizations offering sharing-based PSS face a unique set of design challenges and operational risks. The purpose of this paper is to provide researchers and practitioners with customer-based insights into service delivery system design and risk management for sharing-based PSS operational success.Design/methodology/approachThis qualitative study combines in-depth interviews with supplementary, multidisciplinary literature and secondary firm data. In total, the authors conducted 56 semi-structured interviews with diverse customers across different business-to-customer (B2C) PSS settings.FindingsFirst, the authors develop an integrative conceptual framework that reveals what structural and infrastructural design choices customer expect organizations to make for mitigating risks and enhancing customer-perceived value in the sharing economy. These design choices may influence customers' trust and control perceptions in all actors involved in the service delivery system. Second, the results suggest that sharing value proposition, customer-perceived level of consequentiality and level of customer-supplied resources are contingency factors that need to be considered when making design decisions for risk management in the sharing economy.Originality/valueThis study extends Sampson's Unified Service Theory by proposing that, with sharing-based PSS, production flows from customers to customers. This situation creates unique challenges for operations management. This paper extends current understanding of the role, characteristics and contingencies of service delivery system design for risk management in the sharing economy. In doing so, authors challenge common wisdom and suggest understanding both the organizational and customers' individual contexts is critical for (contingency) theory and practice.

Abstract:
Paget-Schroetter syndrome (PSS) is a rare form of thoracic outlet syndrome caused by axillosubclavian vein thrombosis which typically presents in healthy young adults. Prompt therapy, traditionally by means of catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) prior to definitive surgery, can prevent the subsequent onset of postthrombotic syndrome (PTS) and considerable disability. As CDT is associated with major haemorrhage and high overall treatment cost, pharmacomechanical thrombectomy (PMT) seems to be an attractive alternative which combines pharmacological thrombolysis with mechanical clot disruption. The Trellis-8 peripheral infusion catheter is an example of such a treatment which provides topical thrombolysis in an isolated zone. We describe the use of the Trellis-8 PMT system in the successful management of three patients with PSS.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify the elements of the product-service system (PSS) business model of a Brazilian company that has been running it for almost 50 years. It describes the PSS business model and gives special attention to the financial aspects of PSS implementation and to contingent factors of this emerging country. Design/methodology/approach The research is based on a single case study. Data have been collected through interviews and document analysis. Results and implications are obtained using Canvas framework to structure information and comparison between theory and practice. Findings Results described in this paper show that the PSS design and implementation can be strongly influenced by financial and contingent factors. This case indicates that the implementation of PSS business models can follow diverse paths and configurations to fit with companies’ organizational features, local regulations and economic factors, including mixed transactional models and less demanding financial assessments. Originality/value This paper provides a roadmap of lessons learned from a multinational manufacturer that has been following the PSS business model for almost 50 years. This paper offers key insights concerning financial aspects and contingency factors that might influence servitization adoption.

Abstract:
AbstractOrganizations and researchers in Western societies are finding employees belonging to the Millennial generation are harder to retain than were employees of previous generations. Using generation theory for the foundation, this paper first looks at the literature discussing whether generational cohorts should continue to be defined as nationally bounded entities, or whether there are now ‘global generations’ in existence. Then, factors that decrease employee turnover are explored. Using social exchange theory and the norm of reciprocity as the basis, the literature suggests affective commitment leads to reduced turnover intentions. Two major constructs found to increase affective commitment are perceived supervisor support (PSS) and perceived organizational support (POS). Finally, human resource management (HRM) antecedents of PSS and POS identified as important by Millennials in Western societies are submitted as potential solutions for retaining employees of the Millennial generation.

Abstract:
Objectives The purpose of this study was to compare the long-term outcome of dogs with medial coronoid process disease (MCPD) treated with arthroscopic intervention versus conservative management. Materials and Methods Medical records of dogs with MCPD treated by arthroscopic intervention or conservative management over an 8-year period were retrospectively reviewed. Long-term outcome (>12 months) was assessed via owner questionnaire including Liverpool Osteoarthritis in Dogs (LOAD) scores and Canine Brief Pain Inventory scores. Results Data from 67 clinically affected elbow joints (67 dogs) diagnosed with MCPD on computed tomography were included. Forty-four dogs underwent arthroscopic intervention and 23 dogs were treated with conservative management. The median LOAD and Pain Severity Score (PSS) for dogs in the arthroscopic intervention group compared with the conservatively managed group were not significantly different (p = 0.066 and p = 0.10, respectively). The median Pain Interference Score (PIS) was significantly higher in the arthroscopic intervention group versus the conservative management group (p = 0.028). There was no significant difference after controlling for age. For LOAD, PSS and PIS, older age at diagnosis was all significantly associated with higher scores (p = 0.048, p = 0.026 and p = 0.046, respectively) and older age at time of questionnaire completion showed a stronger association with the scores (p ≤0.001 for all). Clinical Significance Arthroscopic intervention showed no long-term benefit over conservative management for dogs with MCPD.

AbstractTo pursue business innovation with PSS, many different PSS concepts are designed and evaluated. Various business models of a PSS design concept are devised and evaluated as well. Evaluation of the economic sustainability of PSS business models is critical. This paper presents a systematic method to evaluate the economic sustainability of PSS business models using a system dynamics modelling template. System dynamics modelling task is challenging for practitioners due to the variety of variables comprising business model strategies and their complex interrelationships. To enable the modelling task, a system dynamics modelling template composed of six modules of customer acquisition, channel acquisition, profit creation, resource acquisition, PSS provision, and partnership pattern has been devised. The PSS business model evaluation method has been illustrated using a smart study experience management service system design case to demonstrate the proposed system dynamics modelling template can reflect the case-specific business model which consists of the particular business model strategies.

PurposeThe purpose of the present study is to empirically test a model that illustrates how person–job fit (PJF), person–organization fit (POF) and perceived supervisor support (PSS) as individualistic factors affect job satisfaction and employee loyalty in the Indian context.Design/methodology/approachA survey of the Indian managerial executives was conducted with a structured questionnaire to validate the proposed model. Responses of a sample of 220 have been tested using PLS–SEM modelling approach.FindingsThe factors PJF, POF and PSS are inferred to have significant impact on job satisfaction and also improve employee loyalty. In comparison to PJF and PSS, POF has emerged as the most influential determinant of the proposed model.Practical implicationsHR managers can adopt relevant practices and promote organizational policies in order to have loyal employees. This would also help organizations in increasing overall productivity at both individual and organizational levels. Recruiters could be provided with necessary tools and measures to find better and accurate means of mapping POF and PJF.Originality/valueEstablishing PJF, POF fit and PSS as individual-specific constructs, and job satisfaction as a mediator, leading to employee loyalty, is a significant contribution to research. This study finds uniqueness in the Indian context, in which these constructs have mostly been explored in isolation or as dyadic relations. Abstract:
Product-service systems (PSS) enable product-oriented manufacturing companies to differentiate their offerings and become more competitive, while creating more value for customers along with improved economic performance and, in some cases, reduced environmental impact. However, PSS development remains difficult for manufacturing companies due to limited prior knowledge about PSS and the strategic characteristics it entails. To guide the PSS development process, this paper presents a prescriptive approach composed of a tool and a method based on the use of PSS archetypes in the initial development stages of new PSS business models (BM). The proposed tool builds upon three PSS archetypes, combined with 10 factors for assessment of the best suiting archetype. The proposed method and supporting tool guide companies in five steps, from the beginning of a servitisation process to the initial PSS development. Based on an evaluation with a Danish manufacturing company, an improved version of the method and tool was developed and applied with 60 students specialised in PSS development. Results from the evaluation indicate that the method and tool support scoping new PSS BM through the selection and modification of a PSS archetype, encouraging servitisation and PSS development in companies with different levels of PSS experience.

The theoretical model was tested using data collected from 304 respondents by using structural equation modeling technique. Mediation analysis was performed with 5,000 bootstraps samples.FindingsThe results revealed that PSS affected TI negatively through the mediation of self-efficacy. Conversely to this, PSS influenced TP positively through the mediation of self-efficacy. In addition, the results also showed the direct effect of PSS on employees’ TP.Practical implicationsThe results of this study suggest that the supervisor must provide adequate support to the academic staff, which helps them to develop their self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is helpful for the employees to reduce their TI and to improve their TP.Originality/valueThis study is the first of its nature which explained the direct and indirect effects of PSS on TI and TP by using the framework of social learning theory and social exchange theory simultaneously.

Abstract:
Purpose The Public Sector Scorecard (PSS) is an integrated performance management framework incorporating strategy mapping, service improvement, and measurement and evaluation. It adapts and extends the balanced scorecard to suit the culture and values of the public and voluntary sectors. The purpose of this paper is to assess, with the aid of two case studies across organisational boundaries, how the PSS addresses a number of critical success factors for performance management and improvement in the public and third sectors. Design/methodology/approach The research takes a case study approach assessing the use of the PSS for the UK Ethnic Minority Employment Task Force, and for Sheffield Let’s Change4Life, a £10 million programme addressing obesity in children and families. Findings This paper concludes that the PSS is an effective framework to help organisations improve outcomes for service users and stakeholders without increasing overall cost, and develop measures of performance that help them improve and assure quality without motivating staff to achieve arbitrary targets at the expense of poor service to the public. Key to this is its emphasis on developing a performance management culture based on improvement, innovation and learning rather than a top-down blame culture. Originality/value There have been many research papers describing the problems and pitfalls of public sector performance management, but few which offer a solution. A particular innovation is how the theory of planned behaviour was integrated with a performance management framework for a behaviour change programme addressing childhood obesity.

Abstract:
Product-Service Systems (PSS), if properly designed and implemented, represent a promising approach to sustainability. However, there is a number of organisational, cultural and regulatory barriers that hinder the widespread PSS implementation. In this paper, the authors investigated Distributed Manufacturing (DM) as a promising production model which can be applied to PSS to address some of its implementation barriers and improve its sustainability. To that end, existing PSS implementation barriers were collected and coupled with systematically analysed favourable DM features to describe a set of PSS+DM near-future scenarios, addressing the complete PSS lifecycle. Scenarios were then integrated into the PSS+DM Design Tool aiming to support idea generation for PSS implementation. The tool was tested with students, PSS and/or DM experts, manufacturing companies and design practitioners through two rounds of workshops in order to evaluate its completeness, effectiveness and usability and define recommendations for improvements. Based on the results, the improved final version of the PSS+DM Design Tool was developed, presenting the potential to support idea generation to improve sustainable PSS implementation through integrating DM features in each PSS lifecycle stage.

Abstract:
The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) is a popular instrument for measuring the degree to which individuals appraise situations in their lives as excessively uncontrollable and overloaded. Despite its widespread use (e.g., for evaluating intervention effects in stress management studies), there is still no agreement on its factor structure. Hence, the aim of the present study was to examine the dimensionality, measurement invariance (i.e., across gender, samples, and time), reliability, and validity of the PSS. Data from 11,939 German adults (73% women) were used to establish an exploratory bifactor model for the PSS with one general and two specific factors and to cross-validate this model in a confirmatory bifactor model. The model displayed strong measurement invariance across gender and was replicated in Study 2 in data derived from six randomized controlled trials investigating a web-based stress management training. In Study 2 (overall N = 1,862), we found strong temporal invariance. Also, our analyses of concurrent and predictive validity showed associations with depressive symptoms, anxiety, and insomnia severity for the three latent PSS factors. These results show the implications of the bifactor structure of the PSS that might be of consequence in empirical research.

Abstract:
PurposeProduct-service systems (PSSs)’s popularity has expanded significantly throughout recent years. The purpose of this paper is to integrate products and services to achieve functional results that augment the offering’s value. Nevertheless, the intangibility of services hinders the diffusion of PSSs: services are characterized by imprecisions and ambiguities that render the assessment and prioritization of customer requirements problematic. An inadequate evaluation of the latter leads to an inconsistent PSS design that results in the customer dissatisfaction.Design/methodology/approachTo address these concerns, the paper proposes an approach integrating the quality function deployment for product-service systems (QFDforPSS) method with Thurstone’s Law of Comparative Judgments. This approach was tested at a manufacturer in the medical sector seeking to improve his market stance through a PSS model.FindingsAlthough the case study is based on a limited sample, the results achieved highlight the importance of the flow of information between the PSS provider and the customers (i.e. the PSS receivers) in the healthcare sector. The proposed approach can facilitate the company in collecting information even in the case of incomplete answers to surveys and questionnaires providing a practical method to handle the uncertainty due to incomplete data.Originality/valueThe study represents one of the first applications of the PSS approach in the healthcare sector, introducing a novel integration of easy-to-use management tools to augment the understanding of customer needs and expectations.

Abstract:
The societal and environmental crises in recent decades have promoted a social awareness of existing challenges to sustainability. While product–service systems (PSS) are considered a promising way to achieve a sustainable future, PSS features also create barriers that hinder the widespread implementation of PSS in society. Recent studies have therefore increasingly focused on the challenges to PSS implementation. However, the existing literature fails to facilitate a strategic plan or practical guide for PSS design activity despite taking into account the importance of visioning in PSS design. This paper, therefore, proposes a strategic planning method for PSS development and implementation by combining technology roadmap and transition scenarios. To illustrate its applicability and validity, the proposed approach is applied to a PSS development project for solving wildlife damage in a suburban city of Tokyo. The case study was conducted as a participatory workshop, which involved relevant stakeholders to develop a roadmap toward a sustainable future PSS vision based on the proposed method. The result of this application demonstrates that the proposed approach enables the formulation of a long-term PSS design strategy, while comprehensively converging the perspectives and knowledge of each stakeholder participating in the PSS development.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Power system (PS) blackouts still persist worldwide, evidencing that the existing protective structures need to be improved. The discussed requirements and criteria to be met for joint synchronous operation of large and super-large united PSs should be based on close co-ordination of operative and technological management of all PSs involved in order to ensure secure and stable electricity supply and minimise or avoid the threat of a total PS blackout. The authors analyse the July 2012 India blackout - the largest power outage in history, which affected over 620 million people, i.e. half of India’s population and spread across its 22 states. The analysis is of a general character, being applicable also to similar blackouts that have occurred in Europe and worldwide since 2003. The authors summarise and develop the main principles and methods of operative and technological management aimed at preventing total blackouts in large and super-large PSs.

In Ontario, patients visiting cancer clinics routinely complete the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS), which screens for 9 symptoms (scale: 0-10). Using ESAS, we explored the association between baseline patient-reported outcomes and overall survival (OS). Methods: APC Patients with ESAS records prior to receiving publicly-funded drugs from November 2008 to March 2016 were identified from Cancer Care Ontario’s New Drug Funding Program and Symptom Management databases. We examined 3 baseline composite ESAS scores: Total Symptom Distress Score (TSDS: all 9 symptoms), Physical Symptom Score (PHS: 6/9 symptoms), and Psychological Symptom Score (PSS: 2/9 symptoms); Composite scores greater than a threshold (defined as number of symptoms in composite score multiplied by clinically relevant score (≥4)) were categorized as High Symptom Burden (TSDS ≥ 36, PHS ≥ 24, PSS ≥ 8). The primary endpoint, OS, was assessed using Kaplan-Meier. Multivariable Cox models were used to adjust for age, gender, income, prior therapies (surgery, adjuvant gemcitabine, radiation), and Charlson's comorbidity. Analysis was repeated in a sub-cohort with identifiable ECOG status and stage. Results: We identified 2,199 APC patients (mean age 64 years, 55% male) with ESAS records prior to receiving gemcitabine (54%), FOLFIRINOX (40%) or gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel (6%). Crude median survival was 4.5 and 7.3 months for patients with high and low TSDS burden, respectively (HR = 1.50, 95% CI: 1.36, 1.66). After adjustment with multivariable Cox model, high TSDS burden was associated with lower OS (HR = 1.47, 95% CI: 1.33, 1.63). Similar trends were observed for PHS and PSS. When adjusting for both PHS and PSS in a Cox model, only the effect of PHS remained significant. In the sub-cohort (n = 393), high TSDS burden (HR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.73) was associated with lower OS, after adjusting for ECOG and stage. Conclusions: Among APC patients, a higher burden of patient-reported symptoms, via ESAS, at baseline was associated with reduced OS. The effect was prominent for physical symptoms, even after adjusting for treatment, stage and ECOG.

Abstract:
Purpose – Configuration systems are used as a means for efficient design of customer tailored product service systems (PSS). In PSS configuration, mapping customer needs with optimal configuration of PSS components have become much more challenging, because more knowledge with personalization aspects has to be considered. However, the extant techniques are hard to be applied to acquire personalized configuration rules. The purpose of this paper is to extract the configuration rule knowledge in symbolism formulation from historical data. Design/methodology/approach – Customer characteristics (CCs) are defined and introduced into the construction of configuration rules. Personalized PSS configuration rules (PCRs) are thereby proposed to collect and represent more knowledge. An approach combining Local Cluster Neural Network and Rulex algorithm is proposed to extract rule knowledge from historical data. Findings – The personalized configuration rules with CCs are able to alleviate the burden of customers in expressing functional requirements. Furthermore, in the long-term relationship with a customer in PSS realization, PSS offerings can be reconfigured according to the changing CCs with the guide of PCRs. Originality/value – The contribution of this paper lies in introducing the attribute of CCs into the antecedents of PCRs and proposing the neural networks-based approach to extracting the rule knowledge from historical data.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the moderating role of authentic leadership (AL) on the relationship between seasonal employee’s perception of supervisor support and turnover intention (TI) in the hospitality industry. Design/methodology/approach The data on perceived supervisor support (PSS), AL and TI were gathered from 305 seasonal employees of five-star hotels in Antalya, Turkey with a time lag of one month. Hierarchical linear regression and hierarchical linear modeling were performed to test the multi-level data. Findings The findings revealed direct significant effects of both supervisor support and AL on TI. In addition, AL moderated the negative influence of PSS on TI. Research limitations/implications This multi-level research highlights the significance of AL for comprehending the link between seasonal hotel employees’ PSS and their TI. Directions for future research include a cross-cultural study examining the validity of the conceptual framework. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed to check the common method variance. Practical implications AL through strengthening PSS works as a catalyst for keeping seasonal employees in the organization for the next season. Thus, practitioners should develop supervisors’ AL skills and they should encourage supervisors to be more efficient in improving themselves as a main source of support. Originality/value The research investigates the little-researched area of AL at the group level in relation to PSS and TI.

Abstract:
PurposeThis research bridges disparate research on servitization, namely product–service systems (PSS) and integrated solutions (IS), to provide valuable insights for the progression of the field. It acts as a reconciliation of these research streams and offers a reconceptualised agenda incorporating recent research on platforms, ecosystems, modularity, risk and governance as key conceptual themes to synthesise and build theory.Design/methodology/approachThis is a conceptual, theory development article focused on advancing thinking on servitization by identifying systematic and theoretically informed research themes. It also proposes future research opportunities to advance theoretical contributions and practical implications for servitization research.FindingsBy reviewing and synthesising extant PSS and IS research, this article identified five core themes – namely modularity, platforms, ecosystems, risks and governance. The importance of these five themes and their linkages to PSS and IS are examined and a theoretical framework with a future research agenda to advance servitization is proposed.Originality/valueThis paper considers the similarities and differences between PSS and IS in order to develop a theory and to reconcile formerly disparate research efforts by establishing linkages between core themes and identifying valuable synergies for scholars. The importance of the core themes and current gaps within and across these themes are shown, and a mid-range theory for servitization is positioned to bridge the servitization-related PSS and IS communities.

Abstract:
The introduction of stents has led to significant improvement in the management of coronary artery disease. In-stent thrombosis, target lesion revascularization, and stent fracture (SF) have been identified as causes of in-stent restenosis. Peri-contrast staining (PSS) has been associated with in-stent restenosis, stent thrombosis, stent fracture, and the development of coronary aneurysm. As the frequency of patients with first generation sirolimus-eluting coronary stents becomes infrequent; PSS may go unrecognized. Herein, we present a patient with a decade of longitudinal follow-up, who developed PSS identified on coronary angiogram with recurrent stent failure.

Abstract:
Parts supplier selection (PSS) is an important part of supply chain management of manufacturing enterprise. In the PSS process, the values of evaluation indicators are often uncertain and incomplete and the importance degrees of evaluation indicators are often instable. To solve this problem, a PSS framework of manufacturing enterprise based on D-S evidence theory is proposed. The indicator system for PSS is established, and the indicators are divided into three categories: quantitative, comprehensive qualitative and direct qualitative. The initial indicator values are processed by membership grade method to obtain the tendency degree. A two-order weighted D-S evidence theory model is constructed to evaluate the screened candidate suppliers. A manufacturing enterprise application case is given finally to illustrate the correctness and feasibility of the proposed framework.

Abstract:
In order to make our production and consumption systems more sustainable, there is a need to further explore and support novel business models with higher sustainability potential. Use-oriented product-service systems (u-PSS) are considered a promising alternative to traditional ownership-based business models, as they may result in lower environmental impacts. The presence of u-PSS in consumer goods markets, however, is still small. This is due in part to the nature of the products and lack of consumer acceptance of u-PSS. Lately, however, companies in Sweden have begun offering u-PSS for consumer goods, thereby challenging earlier findings. Understanding about how companies encourage consumers to select u-PSS over ownership-based options is still lacking. We investigate this question by conducting interviews with and analysing websites and publicly available company reports of seven Swedish companies from three consumer goods sectors: clothing, eyewear and furniture. We found that, while consumer barriers to u-PSS found in previous studies—uncertainty and trust, economics and costs and desire to own—persist, tailoring elements of u-PSS business models to different markets, sectors and consumer segments can help address these barriers and ensure u-PSS resonate with consumers. The study also applies the concept of consumer perceived value to show how emphasising different dimensions of value—financial, functional, emotional and social—provided by u-PSS may help increase their acceptance and adoption.
