Se o resultado for emocional e fisicamente satisfatório aumentará a intimidade emocional do casal.
Accurate estimates of prevalence/ incidence of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) are important in understanding the true burden on quality of life, and in identifying risk factors for prevention. PURPOSE: To study the historical evolution of female sexual response, the state-of-the-art knowledge in women’s sexual response, and the revised definitions and classifications of FSD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The Master & Johnson and Kaplan models (desire, arousal, orgasm and resolution) was a great scientific advance, facilitated clinical research, however the concept one linear sequence genitally focused events has not proven helpful in managing women’s sexual dysfunctions. A new view of women’s sexual response published by Basson (2002) moves the focus from spontaneous sexual drive to an inherently responsive cycles, that reflects intimacy-based sexual motivation, processing of sexual stimuli to arousal. Sexual desire to continue the physical experience is emotionally and physically satisfying, emotional intimacy with the partner is increased. Diagnostic classifications have varies among different diagnostic systems: ICD-10 (WHO), and DSM-IV (American Psychiatric Association) and Paris classification (2nd International Consultation on Sexual Dysfunction). An essential element of the new diagnostic system is the inclusion of personal distress criterion for most of the diagnostic categories. CONCLUSION: Further research is urgently need on female sexual response physiology, to identify their markers and to better understanding the feedback loops.

Abstract:

This investigation addresses how photosynthetic efficiency is affected when pea (Pisum sativum) plants are restricted to a sole nitrogen source (i.e. ammonium or nitrate). The pea plants were watered with different nutrient solutions without NO3- or NH4+ for different time-periods in order to assay for nitrogen content. The soluble ammonium and nitrate content was measured throughout the entire growth period. No major differences were observed in nitrogen content during the starvation period up to 25 days. For technical reasons, cultivation of plants could not be extended beyond this time. The chloroplasts and thylakoids were isolated after 25 days and assayed for chlorophyll contents and photosynthetic activity.

The outcome of these tests indicates a small but unambiguous decrease in the photosynthesis activity for all treatments, relative the control.

Abstract:
This thesis presents an automated tool for manipulation and analysis of mobile concurrent systems described in the Psi-calculi framework. Psi-calculi is a family of process calculi, parameterised on data, conditions and a logic. We provide a general framework for implementing instantiations of these parameters, yielding a Psi-calculus. The tool implements simulation of Psi-calculus processes based on symbolic operational semantics, process constants for providing an environment for processes, and a symbolic bisimulation algorithm for checking bisimilarity. The tool has a command interpreter frontend for interactive use.

Abstract:
This dissertation is about studies of anomalous experiences (AEs), which can be defined as uncommon and irregular, but reported by a large segment of the population. Among the variety of AEs, this work concentrates on psi-related experiences, which includes two categories. The first are reports of extrasensory perception (ESP), which suggest the capacity of obtaining information without the use of the sensory channels or logical inference. The second is called of psychokinesis (PK), which refers to reports of the action or effect of the mind on matter, or when people\'s thoughts seem to affect the physical environment, without the mediation of the muscular system, a physical force, or a recognized physical mechanism. The study explores if: a) it is possible to train people to be more capable to perceive and use psi phenomena in the experimental context and, b) if the manipulation of some factors can increase psi scores significantly in the laboratory. A review of the research on the effectiveness of psi trainings (PT) and of studies that manipulate psi-conductive variables (PCV) is presented. The studies are grouped in these two categories (PT and PCV), considering specific and common variables for both groups. Studies are evaluated in subgroups, according to specific variables, with emphasis on statistics and methods. The literature review was conducted from March 2007 to February 2008, and it includes books and scientific papers on the topic. 128 studies are reviewed; 87 of them about the manipulation of VCP and 41 of TP, for a total of 9.153 participants in 845.815 trials. 37% of the TP studies are criticized, mostly on methodological grounds, while the same was the case for 16% of the VCP studies. Although most of the studies obtained significant results in the expected direction, it is concluded that they are not effective to train psi or to manipulate psiconductive variables. In general they fail in terms of the elaboration of methods capable to exclude alternative hypotheses, and the main flaws are: 1. lack of control groups; 2. inappropriate control of the variable of belief, for both the subjects and researchers; 3. lack of evaluation of learning; most of the studies were of brief duration and without the evaluation and/or correlation of the factors to which learning is attributed, and in relation to psi scores. With the exception of one study, the rest do not present subsequent analyses to verify the possible maintenance of the psi levels obtained; 4. the experimenter effect (psi and psychological) is ignored completely in most of the studies; 5. lack of standard parameters to evaluate certain characteristics or states (for example hypnosis, meditation, ganzfeld); 6. lack of a systemic and integrated approach in relation to psi phenomena, to the methods used to test them, and to multiple variables that may influence them. In addition to discussing these problems, suggestions are presented to improve the situation, together with an exploratory initial proposal for psi training

Abstract:
Psi-calculi are mobile process calculi, parametrised with arbitrary nominal datatypes representing data, communication channels, assertions and conditions, as well as morphisms over those datatypes. The framework for psi-calculi has been formalised in the interactive theorem prover Isabelle, along with both strong and weak bisimulation. This master's thesis project presents a tool for formally verifying that psi-calculus candidates are well-defined within the Isabelle/HOL-Nominal framework. It employs custom-made, heuristic proof tactics that discharge as many proof obligations as possible automatically, and passes any remaining proof obligations back to the user, who must supply manual proofs. The implementation of the tool as well as the proof strategies employed are described. The tool is applied to verify encodings of both the monadic and polyadic variants of the pi-calculus, as well as the pi-F calculus.

Abstract:
In this thesis project we focus on the implementation of a type system in a tool called Psi-calculi Workbench. Psi-calculi is an attempt to generalize a family of process calculi based on a parametric approach. Instantiating parameters of the psi-calculi framework (namely: data, conditions and assertions) results in a psi-calculus. The implementation of the type system is based on an existing specification with some extensions which we add to it. The original idea behind the psi-calculi type system is to keep it as generic as possible, with minimum dependency to the specific psi instances. Due to this requirement imposed by the theory, we try to keep the implementation of the type system as generic as possible. This can be achieved in a rather straight forward way by virtue of Standard ML module system. In order to evaluate the result of our type system implementation, we present the instantiation of two typed psi-calculus examples using the typed version of the Psi-calculi Workbench.

It is well known that Takahashi's Theorem [7] characterizes the submanifolds in the Euclidean space whose coordinate functions are eigenfunctions of the Laplacian associated to the same nonzero eigenvalue: they are minimal submanifolds in a hypersphere. Later on, many authors have obtained different extensions of Takahashi's Theorem. One of these extensions is given by Dillen-Pas-Verstraelen in [2]. In that work, the authors study surfaces in the 3-dimensional space whose immersion ψ satisfy Δψ=Aψ+b, where Δ denotes the Laplacian operator, A is a 3x3 real matrix and b is a constant vector. They obtain that the only surfaces satisfying that equation are minimal ones, spheres and circular cylinders. After that different authors have studied this condition in the case of hypersurfaces Mn immersed in pseudo-Euclidean spaces Rn+1 for any index t≥0, and showed that Mn must be an open part of a minimal Rn+1 surfaces, a totally umbilical hypersurface or a standard pseudo-Riemannian product. Recently, that equation has been extended to operators different to the Laplacian one. In fact, Alías and Gürbüz study in [2] hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 whose position vector ψ satisfies Lkψ=Aψ+b, where Lk is the linealized differential operator associated to the mean curvature of order k+1, for k=0, 1,..., n-1 (note that for k=0 we obtain the Laplacian operator). Those authors show that the only hypersurfaces satisfying the above condition are k-minimal hypersurfaces, hyperspheres and generalized cylinders (for appropriate radii and dimensions). In view of that result for operators Lk, we study the same condition but for hypersurfaces immersed in pseudo-Euclidean spaces Rn+1 for any index t≥0, and show (in papers [5] and [6]) that the only hypersurfaces in the pseudo-Euclidean spaces satisfying that condition are k-minimal hypersurfaces, hyperspheres and generalized cylinders (for appropriate radii and dimensions). After solving the problem for hypersurfaces in pseudo-Euclidean spaces, we study the condition Lkψ=Aψ+b for hypersurfaces immersed in pseudo-Riemannian space forms, for arbitrary index t≥0 and nonzero constant curvature. We show (in papers [3] and [4]), that the only hypersurfaces satisfying that condition are k-minimal hypersurfaces, totally umbilical hypersurfaces, standard pseudo-Riemannian products and some quadratic hypersurfaces. In conclusion, the results obtained in this Thesis extend completely to pseudo- Euclidean spaces and pseudo-Riemannian space forms of nonzero constant curvature the results previously obtained in [2]. Abstract:
Social media enable celebrity to interact with their followers and enable followers to build the relationship through the interaction. Former research has found that openness and perceived interactivity are antecedents for parasocial interaction. In order to investigate the way to increase user’s engagement in celebrity’s social media page, this research examines the relationship between celebrity’s posts employ openness and perceived interactivity, other user’s posts employ openness and perceived interactivity, parasocial interaction, parasocial relationship, and social media engagement. Survey data were collected from 595 followers of one Chinese celebrity through an online survey. The results indicate that neither celebrity’s nor other user’s posts employ openness and perceived interactivity direct lead to user’s social media engagement. However, PSI and PSR, which increased by celebrity’s and other user’s posts employ openness and perceived interactivity, have a positive relationship with user’s social media engagement. It provides support for the mediating role of PSI and PSR to social media engagement.

An RFI plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system and a large-scale RF plasma source immersion ion implantation (PSII) system were designed and built to study two forms of 3-D surface processing, PECVD and PSII. Using the RFI PECVD system, Ti-6Al-4V substrates were coated with diamond-like carbon films with excellent tribological and optical properties. as an innovation, variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry (VASE) was successfully applied for non-destructive, 3-D, large-area tribological coatings quality investigation.;Based on the experience with the RFI PECVD system, a large-scale RFICP source was designed and built for the PSIL Langmuir probe and optical emission spectroscopy studies indicated that the RFI source produced stable, uniform, and clean plasma. MAGIC code was for the first time used to model PSII process, addressing different target geometries and boundaries, materials, plasma parameters, illustrated sheath formation and evolution, field distribution, ion and electron trajectories, ion incident angles, and dose distributions, which are critical for PSII design and understanding.;The RF PSII system was developed into a versatile large-area, uniform, 3-D surface processing apparatus, capable of PSII, PVD, PECVD, and in situ surface cleaning and interface properties modification, for multilayer, multi-step, and high performance surface engineering. Using the RFI PSII system, for the first time, PSII was studied as a mask-based surface layer conversion technique, for pattern writing by implantation as an alternative to current deposition-based and ink-based direct write technologies. It operates at low substrate temperature, keeps the original surface finish and dimensions, and avoids adhesion problem. A different operating mode of the RF source was discovered to perform biased sputtering of high purity quartz, which turned the RFI PSII system into a novel integrated RF PSII/PVD system for large-area, uniform, nitrogen-doped, and hydrogen-free SiO2 films deposition at low substrate temperatures. Nitrogen-doped SiO2 films with excellent optical properties were deposited on semiconductor, metal, and polymer substrates with excellent adhesion. Ellipsometry was used again for non-destructive SiO2 coatings investigation. FEL test electrodes processed by PSII/PVD showed suppressed field emission. A group of transition metals and an FEL test electrode were also implanted by nitrogen using the PSII mode and analyzed.

Abstract:
We present an updated analysis of pulse profiles and their arrival-times from PSR B1534+12, a 37.9-ms pulsar that is orbiting a neutron star. Such “double-neutron-star” systems are expected to undergo various relativistic effects, such as orbital decay and precession, due to the strong-field nature of the local gravitational field (Damour & Taylor, 1992). A high-precision timing model is derived that accounts for all astrophysical processes that systematically affect pulse arrival-times. In the process of generating this model, we constrain parameters that characterize the interstellar environment, relative motion of the pulsar, its spin properties, and binary parameters. We measure five “post-Keplerian” parameters that represent relativistic corrections to the standard Keplerian quantities that describe a binary orbit. These relativistic parameters are then used to test general relativity by comparing the measured values with those predicted by Einstein’s grav- itational theory. We conclude that general relativity is confirmed to within ∼ 0.35% of its predictions. The measurement of orbital decay contains a bias due to relative acceleration in the Galactic potential, and cannot be corrected for at this time due to an unreliable measure of distance; however, we can use this bias as a means to constrain the distance the pulsar should be from Earth in order for general relativity to be the correct theory of gravity. We find this distance to be d_GR = 1.037 ± 0.012 kpc. We also present evidence for pulse “jitter” in PSR B1534+12, which indicates short-term magnetospheric activity and has significant implications for the long-term improvement of timing precision. In a separate study, we present an analysis on pulse-profile evolution that has been previously linked to relativistic spin precession (Stairs et al., 2004). The current results of our precession analysis cannot confirm general relativity using this relativistic effect, but future studies and observations are needed to constrain the precession rate of PSR B1534+12.

Full text
Abstract:
This research derives from an interest in studying some of the categories, technologies and knowledge organised around the psychologies of the "psy". We tried to scan from a critical perspective the model of subjectivity which has been deployed from these ideas as a truth, questioning the conditions of production and stabilisation.
Thus, we took as a starting point the "assemblage epistemology" (Rose, 1996) which considers the hybrid character of objects and is interested in studying how objects (ourselves included) are produced in networks of very complex semiotic-material processes, always taking into account the analysis of the force relations in its configuration. We employ conceptual Foucault's tools as they are developed in the recent governmentality studies which take a non-essentialist pose on the government and on the world objects, in clear relation with the mentioned epistemological perspective.
In order to indicate the "historical ontology" of these objects and the problematic, we follow a genealogic approach that tries to ask about the object composition of the "psy" therapies, and in particular, about one modality of subjectivity which is produced in relation with the connection of the subjects of freedom, responsibility and transformation by the liberal programs of the governments. We are studying the creation of these "psy objects" in the space in which the practices and problems in which the themes of looking after oneself, after the others and the moral of population were being articulated, from the early modernity until the beginning of the 20th Century in France and England. Thus we explore the production conditions of these connections in diverse technologies and projects, kinds of subjectivities capable of self government.
From there we undertake the analysis of two lines of "psy" projects. On the one hand, we analyse the objectivist projects for the productions of certain categories from which individuals could be object of recognition, taking as an example the psychopathological categories and of the production of the psychology of individual differences, in reference to which a therapeutic of the "psy" was made possible.
On other hand, we were interested in taking into account the "subjectivising" modalities of a "psy" therapy. In order to discuss this, we take psychoanalysis as an example, produced in a context, in the inflection point between a "scientific" proposal of a therapy as a "cure"(in its double meaning of treatment of illnesses and care) and as a hermeneutic of the itself (in relation with the ethical technologies of production and of the exploration of oneself).
Therefore, we point towards some of the presuppositions of psychoanalysis and its effects, when establishing a model of subjectivity, conceived of as similar elections and desires that are determined and "translated" in personal/family-like keys. This provided us with arguments to introduce - at the same time - a reflection on the undeniable materiality of this model of subjectivity and the need of a government that makes possible.
We conclude with a reflection on how in our present days the proposition of these "subjectivising" therapies, hybridised with other institutional objectives, are composing other "new" objectives, in different government practices on a different level. This points towards the interest of this research to display a genealogy of the combination between the government practices, knowledge and the technologies of "psy". Through them it was made thinkable and practicable that the subjects were recognised as subjects of "free election", and enrolled in a project of freedom in order to realise oneself.

Abstract:
LHCb is an experiment dedicated to precise measurements of CP violating and rare decays of $b$-hadrons. It will exploit the proton-proton collisions at an energy of 14 TeV in the centre-of-mass system, produced by the LHC collider (CERN-Geneva), and will operate at a luminosity of $2\times 10^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. The expected number of pairs $b\overline{b}$ produced by the LHC collisions is N$_{b\overline{b}}\approx10^{12}$/year. LHCb is designed with a robust and efficient trigger whose purpose is to reduce the event rate in input ($\approx10$ MHz) to a manageable event rate, enriched in content of heavy flavour quarks, to be written to storage ($\approx2$ kHz). The rate reduction is achieved in two trigger levels, L0 (Level 0) and HLT (High Level Trigger), that will be widely discussed in this thesis. A good particle identification as well as efficient tracks and vertexes reconstruction, are fundamental requirements for the reconstruction of the $b$-hadron decays and proper time measurement.\\ LHCb aims to improve the current precision on the CKM parameters and to search for any possible inconsistency with the Standard Model predictions in order to find out eventual ``New Physics'' effects. The LHCb detector is fully installed, commissioned and ready for data taking: the LHC start-up is expected by the end of 2009.\\ In the first periods of data taking, the understanding of the apparatus, as well as the preparatory measures, are necessary steps for the future analyses on the $b$-hadrons. In particular the charmonium states will be largely produced either as prompt or from $b$$\rightarrow$$c$ transitions. Their well known properties make these resonances ideal for alignment and calibration studies. On the other hand the observation of charmonium states and the measurement, per example, of the prompt cross section ratio between $\psi(2S)$ and $J/\psi$ can give some interesting informations about the production mechanisms.\\ The hadroproduction of $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ is not yet completely understood. Early models could not describe the cross section of directly produced $J/\psi$ mesons. Such models underestimated the measurements by a factor of approximately 50 and did not adequately describe the cross section shape as a function of $p_T$. With the advent of Non-Relativistic QCD (NRQCD) it has been possible to give a better theoretical description of charmonium production through the introduction of the Color Octet model. Nevertheless there are still a lot of issues and open problems: the spin alignment of $\psi$ mesons predicted by NRQCD theories is totally in disagreement with the CDF findings (polarization puzzle); moreover recent NL0 and NNL0 calculations in the Color Singlet model have shown that the amount of the Color Octet needed so far to explain data could be overestimated. Further measurements with $J/\psi$ and other charmonia states are needed to discriminate between the models and clarify the situation.\\ In this thesis the measurement of the prompt cross section ratio between $\psi(2S)$ and J/$\psi$, with the first data of LHCb, is described. Simulation studies have been performed to assess the acceptances, the efficiencies and the systematic errors introduced by the apparatus. Particular emphasis is given to the polarization of the $\psi$'s and to the systematic induced. This measure is a starting point for the subsequent absolute cross section measurements.\\ In chapters I-II-III of this thesis essentially we give a detailed description of the LHCb experiment including the trigger and the online monitoring system. In chapter IV we discuss the theory of charmonium production and the expectations at LHCb. In the chapters V-VI, we present a study on Monte Carlo data in which the measurement of the prompt cross section ratio between $\psi(2S)$ and $J/\psi$, in the dimuon channel, is described. Finally, in the chapter VII we will discuss some further prospects on charmonium measurements.

Abstract:
In the first part of this thesis work, they have been investigated the solubilizing properties of -DM and -DM on the isolation of photosynthetic complexes from pea thylakoids membranes maintaining their native architecture of stacked grana and stroma lamellae. Exposure of these stacked thylakoids to a single step treatment with increasing concentrations (5–100 mM) of -DM or -DM resulted in a quick partial or complete solubilization of the membranes. Regardless of the isomeric form used: 1) at the lowest DM concentrations only a partial solubilization of thylakoids was achieved, giving rise to the release of mainly small protein complexes mixed with membrane fragments enriched in PSI from stroma lamellae; 2) at concentrations above 30 mM a complete solubilization occurred with the further release of high molecular weight protein complexes identified as dimeric PSII, PSI-LHCI and PSII–LHCII supercomplexes. It has been identified in 50 mM of both detrgents the minimal concentration that fully solubilized PSII-LHCII supercomplexes. In the second part of this work they have been characterized, in terms of polypeptide composition, purity and functionality by using biochemical techniques, two forms of PSII-LHCII supercomplexes isolated via sucrose gradient centrifugation from solubilized Pisum sativum thylakoid with 50 mM- and -n-dodecil maltoside. In according to the previous results, to isolate the supercomplexes they have been solubilized directly thylakoids instead of PSII membranes (BBYs), in order to minimize the possibility of detergent-induced artefacts and they have been used stacked membranes in order to avoid destabilization of the interaction of LHCII with the PSII core. The isolated supercomplexes haven‟t shown any ATP-ase and PSI contaminations. Both supercomplexes have shown an identical set of LMM subunits. The supercomplex isolated with -DM was larger and more intact, in terms of OEC and Lhcb subunits, than the supercomplex isolated with -DM. The supercomplex isolated with -DM has shown an higher activity than of those isolated with -DM. In the last part of the work they have been structurally characterized both isolated supercomplexes by using EM single particle analysis. The EM data have shown that the supercomplexes isolated with -DM was a C2S2M2 while those isolated with -DM was a C2S2 supercomplex. They have been obtained the 2D projection maps and the 3D reconstructions maps and angular reconstitution at 30 Å (for the C2S2M2) and at 28 Å (for the C2S2).

Abstract:
Psi-calculi is a parametric framework for extensions of the pi-calculus, with arbitrary data structures and logical assertions for facts about data. This thesis presents broadcast psi-calculi and higher-order psi-calculi, two extensions of the psi-calculi framework, allowing respectively one-to-many communications and the use of higher-order process descriptions through conditions in the parameterised logic. Both extensions preserve the purity of the psi-calculi semantics; the standard congruence and structural properties of bisimilarity are proved formally in Isabelle. The work going into the extensions show that depending on the specific extension, working out the formal proofs can be a work-intensive process. We find that some of this work could be automated, and implementing such automation may facilitate the development of future extensions to the psi-calculi framework.

Abstract:
This programme of research is concerned with a direct comparison between the ways in which we respond to, and become aware of, subliminal and psi stimuli. I define subliminal percepts as those produced by sensory stimulation below the awareness threshold; psi "percepts", i.e. telepathy, clairvoyance and precognition, are those occurring in the absence of any physical stimulus. Initially a preliminary investigation was run to choose suitable target stimuli and to ascertain the correct subliminal volume. Then an exploratory study was run in which 10 participants undertook six Ganzfeld sessions each. The Ganzfeld technique induces the hypnagogic state and is a successful and well-researched design in parapsychology. Besides measuring levels of awareness to the stimuli, affective, physiological and personality factors were assessed. In the follow-up study, the basic design and targets were refined, and more extensive psychological tests were included; a semantic differential test, a state of consciousness report, and cognitive flexibility tests. The final study was run in order to assess whether the basic findings would generalise to a wider segment of the population. Results from the exploratory and follow-up studies indicate that, at the cognitive level of response, the psychological process of achieving awareness of the target is very similar for both phenomena. The final study indicated that awareness of subliminal stimuli is possibly relatively greater under certain circumstances. All three studies indicated that both phenomena are affected by factors such as attitude and personality in a similar manner.

This study addresses Conflict Mediation as an institutionalising field, in close relation with judicial practices. Mediation is known as an alternative dispute resolution method, systematised in the US in the 1970 s. Along with Conciliation and Arbitration, it s becoming more widespread in Brazil, specially in the juridical field, being adopted as a political strategy in the reform of Judicial System. Mediation tends to be presented by mediators as a practice where one can find psychological and juridical knowledge and doings, but distinguished from both psychology and law fields. Considering this context, our research intended to identify and analyse Brazilian Mediation territory institutionalisation from two emphases: the relationship established between Mediation and Judiciary and the subjectivation process on judicial practices. That s what we have called psy-juridical borders. We have approached these themes through institutional analysis from a French perspective (René Lourau) and with some Michel Foucault theoretical supports. In chapter 1 we have scanned the field, showing the territory under construction and emphasising where Mediation and Judiciary reach each other. In chapter 2 we have focused articles written by psychologists and lawyers and their formulations about Mediation, showing its senses and effects on subject and society. In chapter 3 we have explored the experience of subjectivity produced in judicial Mediations − normalisation and ethical constitution of the subject were found. With Foucault perspective we were able to problematise the ethical-political choice which institutionalise such practices in Judiciary

Abstract:
We present an analysis of the formation of charmonium resonances of heavy quark pairs immersed in a deconfined environment for a finite time interval. This is intended to model the J/ψ suppression due to the possible formation of a color screening quark gluon plasma in heavy ion collisions. In particular, we examine how the the χ(c) and J/ψ states are affected in a quantum mechanical suppression model. We then investigate how the momentum dependence of the fraction of J/ψ's that come from radiative χ(c) decays or that are directly created can affect the momentum dependence of the resulting J/ψ suppression. We examine under what circumstances could this suppression momentum dependence be enhanced. This is of interest since previous quantum mechanical analyses have failed to model the strong momentum dependence observed in heavy ion collisions.

Luke, David P. "The psychology and parapsychology of the belief in luck and its relation to the belief in PSI and PSI performance." Thesis, University of Northampton, 2007. http://nectar.northampton.ac.uk/2844/.

Abstract:
Self-reports have described luck as an important factor in people’s lives, and there is a sizable body of psychological research conducted around the belief in luck, primarily as an intangible external element and a companion of gamblers. This thesis reviews the major part of this research, offering a critical analysis and identifying a region of research into luck that warrants further investigation. That is, if psychic events, collectively termed ‘psi’ are possible then such events may just appear to be lucky. Several parapsychological studies have investigated this relationship between luck and psi but have failed to discern if this relationship is real, perhaps because of the lack of explicit definition of luck or the measurement of what it is that the participants believe it to be. To address this issue existing luck belief measures were reviewed but it was clearly necessary to construct a new comprehensive measure based on thorough bottom-up test construction principles. A series of semi-structured interviews about luck were reanalysed qualitatively, the themes of which were used in the generation of items for a questionnaire. Through a series of factor-analyses a final 40-item, 4-factor Questionnaire of Beliefs about Luck (QBL) was produced, with factors labelled Luck, Chance, Providence and Fortune, to which was added a 1-item measure of Perceived Personal Luckiness (PPL). The new measure was found to be robust and internally reliable and correlated with paranormal belief supporting several predictions and thereby demonstrating sound construct validity. The literature on psi and luck indicated that luck might best be understood by Stanford’s (1974a) model of ‘psi-mediated instrumental response’ (PMIR) and a PMIR-type study was planned which incorporated the new QBL. A non-intentional precognition experiment with 100 participants utilised erotic-images as psi incentives and found good evidence of psi with this design. Furthermore, the QBL Luck subscale was found to be a significant predictor variable of psi score, indicating that the measure has good predictive validity, and PPL, belief in psi, and erotic reactivity also correlated with psi scores. There was also a near gender-effect. The findings were discussed in light of previous results and were interpreted in relation to the psychological theories outlined in the literature review, finding support for the notion of self-serving biases, and offering fresh insights into the illusion of control. A model was put forward for the relationship of luck and psi. It was concluded that the QBL was a comprehensive, reliable, valid and useful tool in the investigation of luck

Abstract:
Psi, the unknown factor(s) in instances of apparently anomalous interaction between an organism and its environment, has long defied attempts to be usefully incorporated in a theoretical framework. By considering the different levels - physical, physiological and psychological - at which psi phenomena may be viewed as having an effect, a system theoretic approach is taken to model the way in which two systems may interact. The physical level is first considered, making the assumption that there exists an energetic psi signal. Inferring the required properties of such a signal from the types of system successfully used in psi experiments, it is proposed that the signal may be seen as acting to modify fluctuations in the electromagnetic zero-point field, its precise characteristics being determined by the activity of the electrodynamic system which generated it. A typical target system is simulated, and the presence of a perturbation - the psi signal - is shown to parallel the type of effect seen in empirical data. An experiment looking for possible distance attenuation effects using a system predicted to be sensitive to the proposed signal type is detailed. Expanding on this basic concept, a more detailed study is made of different systems and the possible types of emissive activity they may undergo. The same systems are then considered for their receptive properties. It appears that the systems most capable of detecting a psi signal are biological cells, with the site of primary interaction being the cell membranes, the semi-conductor properties of which are compared to non-biological systems. Two experiments are reported, one looking at human and the other at non-biological sensitivity to electromagnetic fields, these being considered to be detected in an analogous manner to a psi signal. Similarities in the electromagnetically modified activity of the different systems were found. Next the psychophysiological factors which would better enable a human to make use of psi signals are considered.

Paper spray ionization (PSI) is an environmental ionization technique in mass spectrometry (MS), where the sample is deposited on triangular paper moistened with solvent and the ionization process occurs by the application of high voltage on the paper. An important factor that can affect its performance is ion suppression. Aiming to reduce this effect and the exclusion of macromolecules in complex samples, the RAM-PSI-MS method for the analysis of dopamine and epinephrine in plasma was developed and validated. A methodology for analyzing creatinine in the urine was also developed using graphene oxide (GO) modified paper. The methods developed were efficient and promising in improving the role for PSI-MS analysis. The graphene oxide coating was able to improve the time and stability of the spray, in addition to reducing the effect of ion suppression. Already coating the paper with ISRP-RAM phase made it possible to analyze a complex sample, such as plasma, without any sample preparation, obtaining very satisfactory results. Showing that it is possible, practically, to eliminate the inherent problems of PSI-MS, only with the paper coating.

Abstract:
This work, situated in the line of search of Psychology and Education, is a literature review, whose initial purpose was the systematization of knowledge produced about what is termed, primarily under the psychoanalytical view, obsessional neurosis, subsequently, from the scientific point of view, obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD). In a second moment, aimed to analyze the speeches produced about the subject, in view of, the different areas of knowledge that gets occupied by it, as well as the divergent theoretical conceptions. However, more than the knowledge that have been produced, interested to us, examining the practices that are involved in the production and operation of such knowledge, that is, what effects the speeches of the radical psy areas - understood here by psychiatry, psychology and psychoanalysis in the production of a determined type of subject and the role of education in that context. For both, in support in some studies of foucaultian approach, which allowed us understand the truth as invention - and not as discovery, as suggest many scientists hence the need for denaturalize them; and the discourse as a set of statements, entailed with power games, which are moving certain truth regimes, through which, reality and subject are produced. Then, if the invention is in/on the language, we can affirm that, the invention of obsessional neurosis - or OCD - and its clinical, get status of truth and reality in so far as it begins to be produced in narratives, when it begins to circulate in various speeches, when it begins to gain strength in studies that aim to understand and explain it, finally, when it begins to produce new knowledge-generating practices and, in a circular way, practices that summon new knowledge. From the study, it was also possible to conclude that the psy speeches are important power devices, which work in order to erase any distinction, to the suitability of the subject to normative standards. Therefore, the school, understood as disciplinary institution par excellence, where psy and educational speeches merge, and sometimes, are confused, is the privileged place for the exercise of power, and consequently, of the rules practices of every and of itself at the same time.

Abstract:
The Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) is designed to individualize instruction based on traditional learning theories. Students are required to demonstrate mastery before advancing to new material. A self-pacing feature allows students to dictate their rate of progress. Compared to lecture-discussion instruction, PSI courses have demonstrated superior examination performance as well as increased ratings of course quality. However, studies have been criticized for testing only basic skills while ignoring more complex processes. In this research project, the PSI study guides were designed to emphasize complex processes and mastery test and review examination questions reflected increased item-level complexity. Results showed that students were able to master these complex items at the required 90% criterion. Performance on the comprehensive review examinations was slightly lower for complex items. Expected differences relating to the three group sequence requirements were not obtained. Nevertheless, mastery performance on the complex items was achieved by all students regardless of experimental group.

Abstract:
Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (DInSAR) has been established as a significant and powerful remote sensing tool for mapping and monitoring ground motion. Due to the limitations of DInSAR, a multi-temporal approach namely Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) was developed. However, both methodologies, and especially PSI, have still constraints, one being the relatively low spatial coverage of the deformation field in natural terrains. To address the aforementioned problem, the main scope of the present research is the development of a hybrid methodology based on the two already existing and well-established methodologies, DInSAR and PSI. Firstly, the proposed hybrid methodology is tested over a natural terrain in Jordan (Middle East). Compared with the PSI method, the hybrid methodology shows a strong, significant improvement. Results show an improved spatial sampling of persistent scatterers. In the major part of the study area, the point density improved by 25-1000 pixels/ km² and in some parts >1000 pixels/km². Time series comparison between pixel locations from both PSI and hybrid results revealed that both approaches show relatively high consistency. To investigate its potential the hybrid method was additionally performed on a challenging natural terrain in Venice lagoon (NE Italy), where salt marshes exist. Specifically, the awareness of lack of information about the deformation of salt marshes, has driven this research on this area and exploring how fast the deformation rate over such vulnerable terrains is. Results show good potential as methodology for this case as the hybrid method was successfully applied and permitted to retrieve information about the deformation rates over such a complex terrain, whose subsidence cannot be detected easily with other techniques. This achievement is significant as any awareness about vulnerable terrains can help experts and policy makers to prevent their potential loss.

Abstract:
PSR B1259-63 is a binary system where a 48 ms pulsar orbits a massive Be star. The system exhibits variable, non-thermal radiation around periastron visible from radio to very high energies (VHE; E>100 GeV). This thesis presents VHE data from PSR B1259-63 as taken during the years 2005, 2006 and before as well as shortly after the 2007 periastron passage. These data extend the knowledge of the lightcurve of this object to all phases of the binary orbit. Observations of VHE gamma-rays with the H.E.S.S. telescope array were performed. Gamma-ray events in an energy range of 0.5-70 TeV were recorded. VHE gamma-ray emission from PSR B1259-63 was detected with an overall significance of 9.5 standard deviations using 55 h of exposure, obtained in 2007. The monthly flux of gamma-rays during the observation period was measured, yielding VHE lightcurve data for the early pre-periastron phase of the system for the first time. PSR B1259-63 was also monitored in 2005 and 2006, far from periastron passage, comprising 8.9 h and 7.5 h of exposure, respectively. No significant excess of gamma-rays is seen in those observations. The firm detection of VHE photons emitted at a true anomaly of -0.35 of the pulsar orbit, i.e. already ~50 days prior to the periastron passage, disfavors the stellar disc target scenario as a primary emission mechanism, based on current knowledge about the companion star''s disc inclination, extension, and density profile. In a phenomenological study indirect evidence that PSR B1259-63 could in fact be a periodical VHE emitter is presented using the TeV data discussed in this work. Moreover, model calculations based on inverse compton (IC) scattering of shock accelerated pulsar wind electrons were performed. The model presented accounts for non-radiative losses possibly at work in the region where the pulsar wind is shocked by stellar outflows. The presented results show a peculiar non-radiative cooling profile around periastron dominating the VHE emission.

Full text
Abstract:
Pulsars are neutron stars (NS) that produce beamed radio-frequency emission. Due to their rapid, steady rotation rate, this signal is detected as a series of pulses whose integrated profile is unusually stable over time. Pulsars in double neutron star (DNS) binary systems are a rare, but extremely useful, astronomical tool and have been used in tests of gravity theories in the strong-gravitational field limit. Rarer still are DNS systems in which both objects have been detected as pulsars; only one such system has been found thus far -- PSR J0737-3039A/B. Discovered over a decade ago, this system consists of one recycled pulsar, PSR J0737-3039A, and its companion, PSR J0737-3039B, which has since become undetectable. In any pulsar-related research, precise timing is necessary to produce meaningful results. The pulse time of arrivals (TOAs) are greatly affected by the medium through which the electromagnetic (EM) signal travels in both frequency-dependent and -independent ways. Even after accounting for such effects, many pulse profiles still exhibit frequency-dependent shape changes, which can greatly affect the precision of the timing results. Traditionally, corrections are applied to the TOAs after calculation in an ad hoc manner. In contrast to this, we explored the wideband timing algorithm developed by Timothy T. Pennucci and collaborators which accounts for frequency-dependent profile changes through a two-dimensional Gaussian pulse portrait model implemented in the TOA calculations. It was found that the portrait model is well-representative of the pulse profile shape over a wide frequency range. This method is also able to produce a robust set of wideband TOAs. The subsequent timing model, determined with TEMPO timing software, was found to be comparable to those produced from subbanded TOAs derived though more traditional methods. Some inconsistencies between the timing model astrometric and spin parameters of the wideband and subbanded data of this well-studied pulsar imply potential difficulties in achieving precise timing results not only for this pulsar, but for others, such as those used in pulsar timing arrays aiming to detect gravitational waves.

Abstract:
Psi-calculi is a parametric framework for process calculi similar to popular pi-calculus extensions such as the explicit fusion calculus, the applied pi-calculus and the spi calculus. Remarkably, machine-checked proofs of standard algebraic and congruence properties of bisimilarity apply to every instance of the framework. The contribution of this licentiate thesis is to significantly extend the applicability and expressiveness of psi-calculi by incorporating several advanced language features into the framework: broadcasts, higher-order communication, generalised pattern matching, sorts and priorities. The extensions present several interesting technical challenges, such as negative premises. The machine-checked proofs for standard results about bisimilarity are generalised to each of these new settings, and the proof scripts are freely available online.

In the present thesis, the DNA psi-condensation is studied both experimental and theoretically in several different contexts. Experiments using circular dichroism spectroscopy were performed in order to elucidate the influence of the flexible polymer's molecular weight on the DNA condensation and reentrant decondensation. The whole phase diagram was determined and compared with theoretical predictions. A full quantitative agreement is found for the condensation transitions; as far the reentrant decondensation transition is concerned, the model does not predict the entire phase diagram due to its assumptions. This theoretical problem is revisited in this thesis and a less restrictive model is developed along the lines of the original Asakura-Oosawa model for depletion interactions. The DNA reentrant decondensation is found within a wide range of salt concentration and the critical PEG (poly ethyleneglicol) concentrations (PEGcrit) dependence on the PEG’s degree of polymerization is in qualitative agreement with the experimental data. We also discuss in this thesis, the synergism found between molecular crowding and the “histone-like” protein binding to DNA molecules in condensing DNA. An agarose gel electrophoresis assay and dynamic light scattering experiments were performed in order to elucidate this synergism and to propose a microscopic model for the formation and stability of the prokaryotic nucleoid. At last, we investigate both theoretical and experimentally the influence of the DNA topology on the DNA psi-condensation, namely we investigate the role of super-coiling on the polymer induced DNA condensation and compare the PEGcrit critical concentrations for the super-coiled DNA as well as for the linearized form. Both experiments and analytical estimatives show that supercoiling has a limited role on the phase separation which accounts for the DNA condensation... Abstract:
This thesis reports on the recent results of a continuing, high-precision pulsar timing project, currently focused on the nearby, binary millisecond pulsar, PSR J0437_4715. Pulse arrival time analysis has yielded a remarkable series of constraints on the physical parameters of this system and evidence for the distortion of space-time as predicted by the General Theory of Relativity. Owing to the proximity of the PSR J0437_4715 system, relative changes in the positions of the Earth and pulsar result in both annual and secular evolution of the line of sight to the pulsar. Although the changes are miniscule, the effects on the projected orbital parameters are detectable in our data at a high level of significance, necessitating the implementation of an improved timing model. In addition to producing estimates of astrometric parameters with unparalleled precision, the study has also yielded the first three-dimensional orbital geometry of a binary pulsar. This achievement includes the first classical determination of the orbital inclination, thereby providing the unique opportunity to verify the shape of the Shapiro delay and independently confirm a general relativistic prediction. With a current post-fit arrival time residual RMS of 130 ns over four years, the unrivaled quality of the timing data presented herein may eventually contribute to the most stringent limit on the energy density of the proposed stochastic gravitational wave background. Continuing the quest for even greater timing precision, a detailed study of the polarimetry of PSR J0437_4715 was undertaken. This effort culminated in the development of a new, phase-coherent technique for calibrating the instrumental response of the observing system. Observations were conducted at the Parkes 64-m radio telescope in New South Wales, Australia, using baseband recorder technologies developed at York University, Toronto, and at the California Institute of Technology. Data were processed off-line at Swinburne University using a beowulf-style cluster of high-performance workstations and custom software developed by the candidate as part of this thesis.
