The family is essential in supporting the patient during the disease process. However, the psychological consequences that entails the impact of the disease and ongoing care, often affect their own health and quality of life. Objective: This study analyzes the main needs of primary caregiver, and the reasons for the acquisition and maintenance of the role of care. The study has identified the main coping strategies used by caregivers throughout the disease process to face the impact of stress and the attachment between the caregiver and the patient. Methodology: Through a cross-sectional qualitative study was conducted 35 individual interviews and 10 reflective groups. It was attended by 26 women and 9 men with an average of 34 years, all primary caregivers of children housed in a cancer care center that provides assistance to children of cancer patients in western Mexico. Results: The primary caregiver profile corresponds mainly to women, with an average educational level and a low socioeconomic status who carry out their role as caregivers and homemakers. The motivation of care is associated with feelings love, obligation and altruism. Most caregivers used coping strategies focused on emotion and had a positive and safe attachment with the patient.

Full textIn this study we pretend to know and analyse the lifestyles of the Balearic Islands University students. So, we have designed and validated an instrument to assess the lifestyle and health status of university students (questionnaire ESVISAUN). Among the obtained results we emphasize that ESVISAUN questionnaire can be considered a valid and reliable instrument to identify healthy lifestyles and health problems in order to design interventions in the context of health promotion in the university. The results confirm the idea that health behaviours should not be considered in isolation from each other, since there is a tendency to clustering of risk factors like smoking, poor adherence to the Mediterranean diet and physical inactivity among university students. Finally, with these data we have raised a number of implications for intervention and research ambits.

Full textThe purpose of this research was to study the possible relationships between health behaviours and health in a group of university students from a private university in Lima Metropolitana. The participants were 190 students of both sexes between 18 and 30 years old and of various faculties and semesters of study. A secondary objective of the investigation was to describe the study variables in the group of participants, and to analyze them according to different socio-demographic variables. The SF-36 Health Survey (Ware & Sherbourne, 1992) was used to measure the participants’ health. The CHS (Cassaretto, Vilela, Saravia & Chau, in press), a selection of items from the first part of the CEVJU, instrument developed by Arrivillaga, Salazar & Gómez (2002) in Colombia, was used to measure health behaviors. Regarding the purpose of the study, it was found that every health behavior, except for substance consumption control, correlates significantly with at least 1 dimension of health. Sleep organization presents the most amount of correlations with health (several medium sized), followed by recreation. The largest correlation found was between sleep organization and vitality. Physical activity also correlates with vitality on a medium size and very significantly. Possible explanations of the results found are discussed, as well as their relevance, limitations of the investigation are reported and recommendations for future studies are given.

Full textLike many industrialized countries in Europe and the Americas, Chile has undergone a demographic and epidemiological transition characterized by a considerable increase in chronic and non-transmissible diseases linked to diet (heart disease, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, stroke and cancer) (Aedo M., et al., 2010; Caro S., 2015; Marin & Wallace, 2002). The objective of this study is to understand the effectiveness over time of a communication strategy applied during the implementation of a health education intervention based on the evaluation of Health Promoting Lifestyle (HPL), in general and for each of the sub-scales or healthy living factors according to the Pender model, namely self-actualization, responsibility for health, exercise, nutrition, interpersonal support and stress management, in the community of Villarica, Chile. This is a longitudinal comparative study based on indicators from the results of the study carried out in 2002 and indicators obtained in 2010. This quantitative analysis is complemented by a qualitative component consisting of in-depth interviews carried out with women from the community and submitted to argument analysis, in order to detect health-promoting behaviors acquired by the participants and determine the effectiveness of the communication strategy applied during the intervention. The present study is based on the re-test and in-depth interviews which took place in May 2010, eight years after the end of the Health Promoting Lifestyle Program (HPLP). The objective is to determine the long-term impact of the program on general HPL behaviors as well as each of the six dimensions, that is, Self-Actualization, Responsibility for Health, Exercise, Nutrition, Interpersonal Support and Stress Management. To this effect, Pender’s model for measurement of HPL was applied, as in the pre-test and post-test, and in-depth interviews were then carried out and an argument analysis matrix performed in order to form the conceptual maps that provided the information necessary to compare and contrast quantitative and qualitative results. The communication strategy employed during the intervention was important in order to achieve behavioral changes in 2002, allowing for the adoption of health-promoting behavior in some of the measured dimensions as well as for overall HPL. The results demonstrate the importance of ongoing reinforcement of positive behaviors in the post-intervention period. Healthy behaviors were maintained over time through social support networks, especially the family, as women from the area studied maintained these behaviors probably due to the degree of self-actualization and the social network that they possess, with a higher frequency of social and family relationships.

Full textThe main aim of the research was to identify which variables predict physical health and mental health component in a group of 100 patients receiving hemodialysis treatment, whose ages ranged between 21 and 70 years (M = 53.07; DE = 11.56). The perceived stress scale EEP-14, created by Cohen, Kamarck and Mermelstein (1983), the multidimensional inventory of coping estimation COPE-60 designed by Carver, Scheier and Weintraub (1989) and health questionnaire SF-36, version 1 made by Ware and Sherbourne (1982) were used for the measurement. Results, revealed that physical HRQoL is more impaired, specifically in the dimensions of physical role and general health. Significant relationships between perceived stress and all dimensions of HRQoL relationships were observed. The mental health showed negative correlations with restraint coping strategies, suppression of activities, focus on and venting of emotions, seeking social support for emotional reasons, behavioral disengagement and consumption of substances. The physical health component correlated negatively with global perceived stress and the strategy of focus on and venting of emotions. Regression analyzes were performed for each component of the HRQoL. Results showed that vascular access, diabetes, and global stress account the 28 % of the variability of the physical health component. Meanwhile, hepatitis C, diabetes, global perceived stress and the strategy of focus on and venting of emotions, accounted the 43 % of the variability of the mental health component.

Full textBreast cancer might be considered a life-threatening event as it demands changes that could exceed the patient’s abilities to cope with their illness, therefore, affect HRQoL in a negative way. This study analyzes the contribution that traumatic stress, perceived stress, coping, migration and type of treatment have on the variability of physical and metal components of the HRQoL of 53 mastectomized women with breast cancer. The instruments used include the Spanish adaptation of the SF-36 health survey (Alonso, Prieto & Antó, 1995), the COPE Inventory (Carver, Scheier & Weintraub, 1989), the Perceived Stress Scale PSS (Cohen, Kamarck & Mermelstein, 1983) and the Peruvian adaptation of the traumatic stress scale (Gargurevich, 2006). The analysis found medium and high levels of the HRQoL. Physical component was more affected than mental component, especially in migrant patients. The model of the physical component was comprised by migration, treatment type and traumatic stress, which explained 30% of its variability. On the other hand, two models were obtained from the mental component; the first was comprised by traumatic stress and perceived stress, which explained 39% of its variability, while the second model, comprised by traumatic stress, perceived stress an emotion-oriented stress, explained 42% of its variability

Full textThis research sets out to know the relationship between Health Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) and coping styles and strategies in a group of patients with gastrointestinal cancer. The sample was compounded by 38 patients, between 31 and 70 years old (M=56.16, DS=10.60) from three hospitals in Lima. To achieve this, The Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36) version by Alonso, Prieto y Antó (1995) and the COPE inventory (Carver, Scheier & Weintraub, 1989) were used. Significant and inverse relationships between mental health dimension with avoidant style and behavioral disengagement strategy was found. Regarding the dimensions of quality of life, mental health and general health were associated with planning and turn to religion strategies. Most participants show medium and high levels of HRQOL dimensions, which indicates that the quality of life is preserved, except for physical role and physical component. Additionally, regarding to coping, it was observed that the sample makes greater use of emotion-focused style and turn to religion strategy. Finally, there was significant differences in HRQOL according to a history of disease and coping with variables of sex, marital status and education level.

Full textThe objective of this research is to analyze the relationship between Humour Styles, Occupational Stress and Burnout in a group of health professionals working in hospital centers in Lima. For this purpose, 100 workers between the ages of 21 and 63 years (M = 35.75, D.E. = 10.60) were assessed. The following tests: the Humour Styles Questionnaire (HSQ) of Martin, Puhlik-Doris, Larsen, Gray and Weir (2003), the Occupational Stress Scales (ILO - WHO), elaborated by Ivancevich and Matteson (1989), and the scale of Burnout (MBI) developed by Maslach and Jackson (1981) were used. It was found that humour styles correlated in a mild and inverse way with occupational stress. Similarly, a greater presence of positive than negative humour and low levels of stress and burnout were found in the sample. Furthermore, the aggressive humour style could be functioning as a protective factor of stress for this sample contrary to the theory found.

Introduction: Lifestyles are the set of guidelines and habits of a person that maintained over time can behave as risk or protection factors depending on their nature. Some studies show that certain changes in lifestyle are effective in improving health and decreasing the burden of disease. The rise of the new technologies opens a new way in the lifestyles treatment such as tobacco and obesity. Applications for mobile devices provide solutions to different user needs. However, many of these are not very sophisticated and provide a limited or dubious benefit, needing to regulate this growing market through studies that provide real scientific evidence on the impact on primary care. Goals: - Analyze the effectiveness of interventions based on the implementation of an application developed for mobile devices to reduce weight and increase physical activity. - Design a study protocol to evaluate the effectiveness of a weight loss intervention based on standard diet recommendations plus a smartphone application (app) and portable device, compared to the standardized evidence-based dietary intervention alone, in primary care patients aged 18 years or older who are overweight or obese. - Know the coping strategies and online social support provided by users of an app for mobile devices to stop smoking during the process of smoking cessation. Methodology: To achieve the first objective, a systematic review and meta-analysis of relevant studies identified through a PubMed search, CINAHL (the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) and Scopus from its inception to August 2015 were performed. Two team members analyzed the studies independently to verify the inclusion criteria and extract the data. We included all controlled studies that evaluated an intervention with a mobile phone application health measures related to weight (ie, body weight, body mass index and/or waist circumference) and/or physical activity results. The estimattions of the net change that compared the intervention group with the control group were combined in the studies that used random effects models. To achieve the second objective, a randomized, multicenter controlled clinical trial was designed in two primary care centers in the city of Tarragona. Subjects: 70 primary care patients, 18 years of age or older, with a body ma

Full textIt was studied the relationship between sexual education and quality of life related to the health of young students from private universities in Lima, Peru. Data were taken from sample of 300 young people, which come from five private universities and were between 17 and 29 years of both sexes (M = 22, DE = 2.352), from these 40.7%(n=122) males and 59.3% (n=178) females through a non-probabilistic intentional sampling. The quality of life related to health was evaluated with SF-36v2-Peru test, validated by Alonso, Pietro and Antó (1995). To get information on "sexual education" variable was used a questionnaire on sexual education by Rodriguez Sanabria, Contreras and Perdomo (2013). This questionnaire was modified and validated by means of factor analysis with principal components method and Varimax rotation. To evidence of reliability was used the internal consistency method by using Cronbach's alpha coefficient, that resulted on .70. The research partially complies with the hypothesis, since there is a significant positive and negative relationship between both variables. In addition, there is a significant relationship between the majority of factors in the sex education variable, which influence each other. By having more information about different aspects of sexuality, it will make the person to take greater awareness, precautions and better and responsible decisions that will improve their quality of life.
